Brian Morton's Starting Out in the Evening is a study in the danger of expectations. Heather Wolfe, a pretty, brash graduate student, is confident that her thesis on the novelist Leonard Schiller will put her on the literary fast track. Yet her first meeting with her idol produces something of a shock: "He came toward her smiling. Old, fat, bald, leaning awkwardly on a cane. The man of her dreams." Can this elderly author and "man of routines" really be the looming figure whose early fictions changed her life? The more she comes to know Schiller, the more he confounds her: his willingness to toil in obscurity falls far short of Heather's romanticized ideal. She can't even quite decide "if he was a hero or if he had wasted his life."
Schiller, however, views his own life quite differently. At first he's seduced by Heather's flattering attentions, and succumbs to at least a frisson of desire for love and fame. Yet ultimately this thoughtful, dignified man wants only to finish what he has begun. He has "no illusions about the scale of his achievement, but he had tried, through art, to bring a little more beauty, a little more tolerance, a little more coherence into the world." With wise and compassionate prose, Morton examines the intersection of these two lives, intertwining their story with a third one--that of Ariel, Schiller's unhappy 40-year-old daughter. Along the way, the author quietly raises a number of questions about the utility of art, its power to inflect our dreams, and, finally, what makes a life well lived. It is to Morton's credit that he doesn't presume to answer such questions. Yet the skill with which he asks them makes Starting Out in the Evening an elegiac and deeply affecting novel. --Marianne Painter
Book Description
"Such a pleasure to read...nothing less than a triumph." -New York Times Book Review
In this "captivating" (Time Out New York) novel, an aging author-now out of print and barely remembered by the literary world that once fleetingly embraced him-is courted by a brash young graduate student who wants to write her thesis on him. What ensues is a story that is at once comical, sensitive and sharply insightful-a work that has already earned astonishing reviews, and that "in every way fulfills the promise of Morton's lovely first novel, The Dylanist. "
"Wonderful...this is what a novel is supposed to be." -Newsday*
"Subtle, tender, and moving." -Publishers Weekly (starred review)
"Stirring." -San Francisco Chronicle
"Elegant...rich with language and ideas."-Forward

Window across the river is better.......2006-09-28
This book is very easy to get drawn into- I ended up reading the whole thing in two sittings. Brian Morton does not really tie up anything with his endings. Key things happen, but he still leaves you guessing the outcome of many other subplots. THis is a little frustrating for me sometimes - but his writing is so insightful and moving it makes up for it.
good, but not as good as other reviewers suggest..........2005-08-03
I like this book, but I am surprised by the lack of much critical voice among the reviews. I think the book succeeds in a couple ways. It flows well and is engaging - I normally only read books before bedtime, but had to finish this one off once I got home from work. I like the development of characters that are so different yet so interlinked, where shared moments define each one's life in a different way.
Yet the book is imperfect. To me, the aspects of how art is defined and how that definition might differ across individuals seem forced and over-emphasized. Some subtlety would be nice when engaging these themes. The ending is disappointing and incomplete. In trying to create nuanced characters, some of the individuals in the book seem put together in a piecemeal way. Casey seems an amalgamation of stereotypes that never really combine in a way that would really define his motives or desires.
Recommended reading? sure. Great book? no.
Graceful writing, important questions.......2004-10-19
Brian Morton has crafted a fine novel that asks subtle questions about art and life, youth and age, father and daughter, love and loss. To his credit, he allows his characters to insinuate a few answers in their choices.
Without giving another summary (others have done well in this regard), I would rather mention the tender complexity of the characters: Heather, the dreamy graduate student, confronts the reality of Leonard Schiller, the author of two novels that left such a lasting imprint on the mind of an impressionable young girl; Leonard, the aging novelist who has committed his life to art, writing four novels and grinding away to complete his fifth and last, enjoys one last lascivious taste of desire; and Ariel, the author's daughter, meanders along seeking meaning in life, in her work and, hopefully, in one romantic, loving relationship.
Not much happens. Heather writes her master's thesis; Leonard's health deteriorates; and Ariel finds increasing comfort in a resuscitated relationship. Their lives intersect and the dynamics leave all wondering (and wandering) about what's important, and about the essence of themselves.
Morton's portrayal of these characters, and of the internal complexity of their choices, is compassionate and forgiving. The novel is delightfully and slyly complex, though its rendering is spare and elequent. I recommend this book to all readers of fine fiction.
Stirrings of Desire.......2004-09-29
An obsure old writer confronts the infirmities of age and the stirrings of desire rekindled by an ambitious and pretty young graduate student. A daughter still struggling for his affections and in serach of a perfect husband. Her boyfriend, torn between actualization and the possibilities of domestic bliss. More than anything, reading this book reminds me of Marquez's General in His Labyrinth. How do we go gently into the night ...?
Captivating.......2004-04-11
Started out sappy, but soon grew into a beautiful journey into the lives of an aging writer and the two younger women who influenced him. Full of ruminations about values and the people and ideas that sustain one. Easy to read within a day or two and to lose oneselves into a captivating story.

Excellent tale!.......2007-09-12
This is one of the best Sil. Special Editions I've read--in fact, one of the best *books* I've read. Nina Baxter has to struggle to support her two children, one of whom has allergy troubles, so health insurance is a must. When Nina is laid off from her job as secretary she must reluctantly accept the offer from David Hansen to be his private assistant. This story is amazing--Nina's growing relationship with David is realistic, touching, funny, and sad. Comic relief is provided by Bubby, a grandmother everyone should have. Have a box of tissues ready for the last chapter. This book is excellent and worth the effort of tracking down.
Great read!.......2006-12-23
Wendy Warren has surpassed herself with this book! The second in the Family Business series, she delights and engages readers with likeable Nina Baxter, two adorable kids and Bubby - an aging Jewish grandma. Nina Baxter is having a bad day ... her rent just went up and then she gets fired from her long-time job. With two kids and an aging grandma to feed, what's a girl to do? When she find a new job and can't pay the rent, she gets desperate. so when former boss David Hanson offers her a solution - work for him at his home, she can't tell him where to put his offer. The catch is, she and her family has to move in with him. Not your typical romance, so be prepared to laugh and cry with Nina, David, Bubby, Izzy and Zach.

Jimmy Zangwow is bound and determined to get his hands on his favorite snack: Moon Pies and milk. After his mother refuses his pre-dinner request, Jimmy stomps off to sulk aboard his secret project, a flying junk jumbilee jalopy. "Holy macaroni!" The next thing he knows he's hurtling off to space, toward the moon... and "Mmm! Moon Pies." A hilariously digressive dialogue with sleepy, hard-of-hearing Mr. Moon results in Jimmy scoring a thousand Moon Pies. But our hungry hero's troubles are not over yet. Run-ins with Mars Men and the dreaded Grimble Grinder are yet in store. And then there's the issue of how to get back to Earth and his brussels-sprout-noodle-bean casserole dinner.
Tony DiTerlizzi paints like a very, very twisted Norman Rockwell. His freckle-faced Jimmy Zangwow, clad in denim shorts, airplane goggles, and red cowboy boots, appeals to every adventurer, big or small, humanoid or alien. This zany escapade proves that with powerful motivation (and what could be a stronger incentive than the promise of Moon Pies?), a generous heart, and a resourceful mind, anything is possible. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description

Young readers' imaginations will soar along with Jimmy in this high-spirited adventure.

Out of this world book!!.......2007-02-11
I first discovered this book at my sisters house. My son loves it. Amazing illustrations, fun story with a little nod to the 50's lifestyle. Encourages imaginative play with a little mystery that every kid will love. I can't give this book enough praise. makes a great gift.
Out of this world!.......2005-10-09
This incredibly charming book has fabulous illustrations that will remind some of a 1950s kids book BUT kids won't find it old-fashioned at all! It is a fabulous journey w/ Jimmy Zangwow. I've given it for birthday presents... complete w/ a box of Moon pies from Cracker Barrel. My three year old little girl adores it... as does her 8 year boy cousin! Don't miss it!
Zip Pip Kaboodle for Jimmy Zangwow's Moon Pie Adventure!.......2005-08-14
It is an absolutely fabulous book! My son has been asking to read this book every night for the past month. We have flown to the moon, Mars and the Milky Way. We have become good friend with the Grimble Grinder, an of course gotten more than our share of moon pie. Yes, it is always shared with the Mars men. This book is on our all time favorites list!
Moon Pies are the Greatest Invention Ever!.......2005-07-19
A clever, imaginative book. I bought it for my husband, who loves moon pies, and he read it to our daughters, ages 5 & 9. This book has everything: action, adventure, great illustrations, and moon pies for dessert! Eight thumbs up from my family!
Marvelous adventure for little boys!.......2004-11-24
My 6-year-old son and I both enjoy this book tremendously. The first time I read it to him, I thought, "Wow! What an awesome adventure story for little boys!" (Or little girls, for that matter!) I purchased this book for my son when he was going through a Moonpie phase. Even though Moonpies aren't at the top of his favorites list anymore, he still loves the adventures of Jimmy Zangwow. So does Mom! Bedtime stories sure are more fun when Mom and Dad love the story as much as the child. I can very, very highly recommend this fun read for anyone in the 4-8 range.

Celebration of the gift of Life.......2007-08-14
This book brought a little tear to my eye as I began reading the first 5 pages. It really makes you feel good about the gift of life and how each and every one of us is a special human being. The easy to read format and drawings makes this book a delight to read to my children and is a positive view on life and delves into spiritual awareness e.g. dreams, healing, auras etc.
With all the negativity in media these days, it is refreshing to read something positive. I loved it that much I have bought another as a gift for my close friend.
Choc full of new age cliche's, but Good for Discussions.......2005-07-07
Divided into four parts: The Spiritual Basics of the Universal Truths, Spiritual Lessons from Animals, Spiritual Messages from Verse, and Mother Nature's Babies. Line drawings and very short stories explain different types of beings and varieties of experiences.
It's useful in that it addresses topics and provides vocabulary difficult to find in children's books. However no one will agree with everything presented within. Whether it's because of major spiritual themes like monotheism and fate, or the validity of historical "myths" such as Atlantis, or more mundane things like that "God made each and every person all the same." I'd rather see a book celebrating diversity.
I dislike the emphasis on telling children the "Truth", rather than encouraging them to think for themselves. It's a little too pedantic and lecture-style. For example, one page details What Colors Mean: "Pink shows that you are shy" etc. Obviously way too simplified. Color, for me, has as many meanings as an individual cares to assign to it. In sum, this book must be read together with parents (who may choose the vignettes they would like to highlight, changing vocabulary as they like), so it's great material for discussions.
kids info guide.......2005-02-05
This is a great book for kids. I bought the book and read it first before I gave it to my daughter. It had the same beliefs I have and although we discussed my beliefs before this brought up more questions for her and gave her deeper insight into the spiritual world. She loves the book. It explains about being born and differant types of psychicness and it is easy for children to understand. With stories at the end that will teach them like children sitting by a grandmothers feet.Great for opening up young minds.
Mother of 5.......2005-01-03
This is an excellent book for teaching the spiritual basics of the universal truths. I have 5 children ages 18, 13,11,9,8. All of them have benefited from this book. This book has helped me explain truths that I could not put in the right words. Mary Summer Rain speaks so well to young minds as well as to adult minds. The pictures are on a childrens level so that where they dont at first understand the words, they can look at the pictures and get an idea of what is being said. By the second time around in the book my children were all understanding. I make this book a nightly bedtime reading. She has broken down the truths in small digestable pieces just enough for understanding. What a wonderful gift we give our children to help them understand and to heal our land. They are the age of peace and harmony.
Somewhat disappointed.......2004-12-24
I had read such glowing reviews for this book, and was disappointed when I ordered my own copy. The simple line art illustration wasn't to my liking and while the book had interesting chapters on dreams, visualization, and wish craft, I found it's basic theology to be inappropriate for my Pagan belief system. I believe in the multiplicity of deity, and was surprised that this book was very monotheist, stressing "one God" who "has a plan for our lives." I would recommend this book for those following a New Age, or Mystical Christian path, but not those raising their children on a Pagan path.

As someone who is always looking for new ideas in cardmaking, I found this book to be useful. The cards are easier to make than they appear to be. Some designs are more intricate and may take a bit more time to master. But there is a nice range of projects for cardmakers of all levels.

Another entry in the Web Site Graphics series, Typography: The Best Work from the Web features Web sites that outshine others in their use of type. "Each site draws some advantage from or is designed for the Web, and takes into account the special requirements needed to render or display type in a small, scrollable, and live window."
It's not surprising that many of the typographically outstanding sites shown here are from design firms. For example, Cow.Interactive Communications (www.cow.com) is an interactive design firm whose Web site shows a creative yet spare use of a single typeface with small, interactive lines of text, simple images, and blocks of color. Studiomotiv (www.studiomotiv.com) shows off the beauty of classic letterforms even while it informs viewers of the history and anatomy of type design.
Typography also celebrates sites that run counter to accepted notions of "good typography." Typographic.com (www.typographic.com) pushes the envelope of readability with its postmodern deconstructed text and navigational scheme, almost daring the viewer to persevere through the site. Bianca (www.bianca.com), an online community, takes another "anti-typography" route by using naive handwriting for headings and a site map that looks like a child's drawing.
Typography is not a how-to book. As with the others in this series, it shows, using ample color illustrations, a few of the best in Web design, chosen by the knowledgeable and discriminating authors. It's the quickest way to find out what's on the cutting edge. --Angelynn Grant
Topics covered: screen captures of many Web sites showing innovative uses of typography in Web design, with captions explaining why each site was chosen and listing artistic credits; an index with the names and addresses of all design firms involved.
Book Description
The Web Site Graphics series is a rich collection of successful web site design work selected by designers for designers. Customer Reviews:
Shows signs of dating, but still some interesting stuff inside........2007-03-14
There are a few standout exhibits in the book. Many are dated and look like the early 90's web design failures though. Its worth 3 bux if you can find it used though. It will give you an occasional inspiration and at that cheap of a price, its not a total waste of money. Not great though.
Lacks something.......2000-10-20
Very nice book, but it lacks content on its original proposal - typography. There's plenty of nice web layouts inside, but it just talks a bit about everything. It's like watching a presentation with 2 slides per second; you see lots of nice stuff but just can't really "get" it. There's WAY MUCH MORE involved in typography (be in on the web, be it on printing) than what this book (or this series) covers.
First Class book for Web Typography.......2000-04-02
OVERVIEW: "Typogrpahy: The Best Work from the Web" showcases 100 Web sites where typography is the dominant design element. The entire book is color on glossy paper with crisp, clean graphics. The authors added information next to each Web site--title, URL, design firm, and, where appropriate, names of designers, editors, illustrators, programmers, and so on. The authors also included a paragraph analyzing the typography for each Web site. OPINION: The two main components of Web page design are artwork and typography. This book excels at showing a rich diversity of Web pages specializing in typography as a design element. This book is not a primer listing the basics of typography, rather, it is a beautiful collection of interesting uses of typography from a rich variety of Web sites. I think this book should be in every Web designer's library as a great source for generating ideas.
