5 out of 5 stars The Port William Membership.......2007-08-14

As surely as the Kentucky River runs through the fictional community of Port William, so the theme of "Membership" runs through these wonderful Port William stories by Wendell Berry. He writes of membership in family, in community, in human industry, in each others' lives, in the past, in the present.

This collection of short stories centers on those now-oldest residents of an up-to-mid-20th century Kentucky farming community who still are of an age to remember and of a bent to cherish ancestral roots, traditions, and habits, and by so doing have brought the past along with them to familiarize and to endear the present. These slices-of-life accounts lovingly highlight a community's stories that have, in their joyful retelling, become part of its lore. They laughingly reminisce over both the serious and silly everyday dilemmas of past-unintended folly. They record the ingrained farm-work ethic of a time now likely gone forever. They revel in relationships of ordinary people doing ordinary things with family and neighbors. And, yes, these stories even include occasions of deaths of and among loved ones of the "membership." It is not the events, themselves, however, that are exceptional; it is Berry's telling of them.

Having read Jayber Crow, Hannah Coulter, The Memory of Old Jack and now That Distant Land, I feel as if I have been poring through family albums that have been unearthed from Port William, KY. And from these I have come to know several generations of strong, gentle, principled people whose lives, by choice, have been pretty remote and mostly detached from the rest of a changing world. These are people of good heart who are intimately linked to each others' care and well-being. This carefully constructed fictional genealogy of the Port William membership comes from an author who, to say the very least, certainly has a way with words! Even if you have not read any of Wendell Berry's work, you will nevertheless be enchanted, I believe, and drawn into the sweetness and the cadence of these beautifully told tales of family, heritage, community, and, of course, membership.

5 out of 5 stars Berry's work consistently satisfying.......2005-08-09

I have deeply loved all of Berry's fiction. That Distant Land is particularly satisfying for showing the unfolding of many of his characters in a linear historical progression. The wealth of inter-relations and the handy genealogical tree of the characters brings all the characters into a full richness.

5 out of 5 stars That Distant Way of Life.......2005-08-06

As usual, Wendell Berry continues to prove his place in the American literary tradition; if only his place were more widely recognized. His prose flows onto the page as natural as flowers spring from the soil or rain falls from the sky. I think that is an apt comparison since many of his stories consider the relationship between man and nature. "That Distant Land" is a collection of twenty-three stories, many of which have been published previously. They are brought together marvelously, arranged in chronological order from the 1880s to the 1980s, flowing in and out of time with the neighboring stories.

Berry's fiction focuses on the invented town of Port William, a small farming community in Kentucky. For those who have read his novels, the characters and the town are familiar; for those who haven't, Berry's world is so infused with natural grace that one automatically feels at home in Port William and among its inhabitants. "That Distant Land" gathers together assorted stories about Port William's characters, some that are familiar and told from a different perspective, and some that might be unknown, but no less familiar.

I especially enjoyed the stories that told of Ptolemy Proudfoot and his wife, Miss Minnie Quinch. "A Consent", the story of their odd courtship, is a story that leaves your soul beaming at the simplicity and overwhelming power of love. The Proudfoot-Miss Minnie stories add a dimension of humor to this collection that is absent in other stories. Berry does not rush any of these stories along; some are short, light-hearted anecdotes - others are long, meandering wanders through time and memory. Perhaps the two most poignant stories in the collection are "Fidelity" and the title piece. Centering around Burley Coulter and Mat Feltner respectively, both are about the end of life, of the memories and people who shape our lives and the memories we will leave behind.

While telling his stories, working his way through the history of Port William, Berry affirms time and again a world alive with possibilities, to be what it is and also what it once was. A farmer in the oldest tradition, he is in love with the land and saddened by the 'advances' technology and urban growth have created. "That Distant Land" brings this home as it covers nearly a century of change in the world, and the decay that inevitably hits smalltown America, whose inhabitants feel that perhaps they have nothing left to offer their children that would entice them to stay and carry on their way of life. Berry, time and again, offers this hope, perhaps as a way of challenge.

5 out of 5 stars Counter-culture at its best!.......2005-08-04

Saying that Berry is something like Faulkner feels like damning with faint praise, and that is not my intent. The comparison is inevitable, given that both men write stories about Southern characters, and that both authors ponder philosophy along with plot. But Berry is better than Faulkner, and better at all kinds of levels. He's a skillful writer; these stories are pleasurable to read. Plus, Berry has an idea of how the world has been, could be, and ought to be - but the doctrine is delivered painlessly and persuasively in these irresistable tales from Port William. A book that should be taught in college a century from now, if America survives.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Collection of Stories.......2005-03-09

Wendell Berry has written twenty-three stories that he has considered worth publishing. They are all collected here. All but perhaps five have been published before in his collections Fidelity, The Wild Birds, and Watch With Me. This collection puts the stories in chronological order of occurrence, and its table of contents further puts Berry's seven novels into the chronology.

Every one of the stories is well-crafted, and, taken as a group, both their quality and their scope are little short of astonishing. From the tenderness of the stories about Wheeler Catlett and his law practice first collected in The Wild Birds to the boisterous, almost slapstick humor of the Ptolemy Proudfoot stories first collected in Watch With Me, Berry covers an impressive range of material.

He also confronts the reader with some difficult questions regarding the value of a way of life that had already, for the most part, vanished when he published the first of these stories. One need not agree with the answers that he suggests to admire and enjoy these stories.

this book was a page turner, you will not be able to put it down, it has everything from down and dirty sex to finding yourself. If you need something to keep you interested this is the book for you.

2 out of 5 stars Get it from the library, if at all.......2007-06-07

After reading mixed reviews about this book I decided to buy it anyway. It wasn't the worst book I've ever read but it wasn't all that great either. The main character, Renee, was immature and irritating, which it made hard to get into the book since the story mostly revolved around her. And the other 3 charcters weren't very well developed either.

The author dragged what was supposed to be a 7 day trip into like 300 pages. And then the book ended so abruptly like she was tired of writing. The women didn't change or mature at all, so I'm not sure what the lesson was supposed to be, if there even was one. I definitely wouldn't reccommend spending money on this book. If you feel the need to read it, borrow it from the library or a friend.

2 out of 5 stars Are you serious?.......2007-03-02

I picked this book up thinking I was getting a good sister story, just you know a quick enjoyable read.

Well that couldn't be further from the truth! I am not sure what people look for in a story but the repetitiveness in this book drove me up a wall! 448 pages of the same story chapter after chapter, only to end and nothing changed! There was no growth in any of these woman, none of their stories it didn't have to be a fairy tale ending but for it to be a year later and they were all still crying over the same things the whole book to end the same way come on! I am not being mean I am just being honest. It started off interesting enough you wanted to know what would be their defining moment's pugh!!!!!!!!!!!! There never was one. Please don't take this wrong I am not saying Ms. Daniels doesn't have talent, I am saying this could have been broken down in 200 pages maybe and maybe a little more something in between instead of the same thoughts each character had over and over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2007-02-13

I found the book hard to put down. It was fun. It was a great read from being to end!!!

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised.......2007-02-11

I was desperate to read a good book, and I read this book and was really pleasantly surprised by how good it was. I liked all the characters in this book. This book was easy to follow and hard to put down once you start reading. I initially thought this would be in similarity to How Stella Got her Groove Back, but I think it was better. This book is about 4 women who share special bonds. One woman is dying of cancer and suggests a trip, so that she can break it to her 2 friends and sister that she is fighting a losing battle. Her sister is in a loveless marraige, and is very promiscuous with others. One woman's marriage has fallen apart and she is now fighting to find out who she is and has discovered she is a Lesbian. The other woman is overweight, and a single mother, and as many insecurities, she rely's very much on her religion. She has accepted a relationship with the Reverend at her church, and is convinced he will eventually leave his wife for her. This book is good, its about the love and bonds, that these women share, and acceptance of one another. They gain closure from eachother. You wil grow to love and hate the women in this novel, but overall it was really good. I think whoever purchases this book will really enjoy it, I did!!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent read!.......2005-02-09

This book is one of the best I have ever read of its kind. If you like the Heinlein style of sci-fi, this is a must - truly an homage to his works, and a fascinating story in its own right. I wish he would write the sequel soon!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Frankowski's best; I hope he writes more.......2004-06-22

Frankowski's New Kashubia series has been a lot of fun since the first book, but this latest work, which focuses more on the upcoming villain than on the hero-to-date, is by far the best in the series, and is in my opinion the author's best work so far.

The Mitchegai are truly nasty, sadistic critters on the scale of Moorcock's Melnibonéans, though in a definite sci-fi world rather than the fantasy land of the Elric saga. They torture and eat their own offspring alive, among other things, and Kren is no exception. Nonetheless, I really found myself rooting for Kren to succeed, and actually liked his character in many ways more than I like the human main character.

This book tells the story of Kren in parallel with the story of the humans' preparations for his invasion. The human side of the equation is a bit too reminiscent of a future Conrad Stargard, but the Mitchegai story is really original, and a real winner.

The story ends just before the big battle is about to commence. It reminds me a lot of Ringo's "Gust Front" in that (and other) ways; spending lots of time developing the villain, ending just before the action heats up, etc. I think this is a far better book, though.

According to Frankowski's web site, his publisher thinks this book should be the last in the series, which would be a terrible pity. Perhaps if the hardcover sales go well enough, they'll reconsider.

5 out of 5 stars Most original adventure in years.......2004-06-18

This is REAL science fiction. No ghosts, goblins, witches or goddesses. Mr. Frankowski has come up with a totally original, absolutely believable, fascinating alien race and a great monster. The Kren side of the book reads so fast that just you can't put it down.

Warning: While it stands alone very well, it IS a prequel and you will spend restless nights waiting for the rest of the story. This is the probably best thing that this author has ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A character it is scary to identify with.......2004-03-04

Leo Frankowski's latest edition of the "A Boy and His Tank" series let's us see the enemy that destroyed humanity. Kren is a reptillian Duke, who has been granted rights to conquer a world populated by humanity. The story covers the preparation of the protagonist Mikolai and the history of Duke Kren. A very enjoyable read.

    4 out of 5 stars High-jinx and shenanigans ahead.......2004-03-01

Leo Frankowski (and Dave Grossman) have done it again in the newest of the New Kashubia series which started with A Boy and His Tank then The War with Earth, very good books I might add, and now finally covers a war with some other species than humans. Namely the Mitchegai a very well done, nasty, villain species who due to their biology are seen as evil- they practice faginism (infanticide cannibal style)! However, the reason I knocked this wonderful book from 5 to 4 stars is because, and this is a bit of a spoiler, the whole book is basically a hook or rather a extended introduction to the next book, It even ends with TO BE CONTINUED!!!! But for fans of the New Kashubia series such as my self it is a invaluable must buy and I recommend this book along with the rest of the New Kashubia series to anyone who injoys good Science-Fiction.

    Book Description

In We Jews, Rabbi Steinsaltz explores the most important issues that concern  Jews today as Jews.  He provides wise and uplifting answers to Jews everywhere, whether they are secular and assimilated or orthodox–Are we a nation or a religion? Are the stereotypes of Jews really true? Why are Jews so controversial? How can we navigate the opposing forces of diversity, culture, and politics? Can we survive intermarriage and the loss of tradition? Do we still worship the Golden Calf? In this book, Rabbi Steinsaltz sees causes and consequences, achievements and failures, looks at the contemporary world, and observes the dreams and longings of modern Jewish people.  Written as an intimate and inspiring internal memo to the whole Jewish family, We Jews answers these questions and many more in a way that is at once insightful and inspiring.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Good Start!.......2007-05-12

Many readers have mentioned that "We Jews" did not cover as much as they had hoped for. I believe that Rabbi Steinsaltz did not write the book to offer solutions to all the problems, or answer all the questions that the Jewish people struggle with. I believe he asked the most important questions, and without writing a comprehensive thesis, he wrote a reader-friendly summarization of the big picture, and of what most Jews are concerned about. He wants us to begin a serious exploration and discussion concerning our future as Jews. I do believe that Rabbi Steinsaltz may want to write a follow-up book sometime in the near future, with more of a complete outline for the most important issues that continue to cause the Jewish soul to struggle, struggle with G-d, and struggle within a changing world. Preserving the Jewish Identity, and writing books about it, will take far more than one book from one great scholar to accomplish this task.

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2007-03-30

If I was disappointed by this book, it was only because the bar was set so high. Rabbi Steinsaltz is a legend and this book was far from legendary. The rabbi argues that Judaism is not a religion, nor a nation nor an ethnic group, nor a race. Well then what are we? According to the rabbi, we are a family. This immediately raises the question, are we a dysfunctional family? The rabbi declines to provide an answer, saying only "I'm not sure." In a previous chapter he hints that we are, but this question deserved deeper treatment, particularly in view of the rabbbi's gloomy conclusion that Judaism is in deep trouble, both in Israel and in the diaspora. I prefer to see the glass as half-full.

4 out of 5 stars interesting but uneven.......2006-05-20

This book is a collection of a dozen essays, each of which can easily be read without reference to the others. The essays fall into three categories:

    1. Some essays were, I think, very well thought out. I was especially impressed by his essay on Jews as a family, in which he points out that Jews are far too racially diverse to be a "race" in the conventional sense of the term, are too geographically scattered to be a conventional nation, and too ideologically diverse to be a conventional religion. Jewish ties are blood ties: one cannot easily leave the Jewish "family", and Jews say awful things to each other but can unite in response to threats. His essay on money explains why Jews were perceived to have money in Christian Europe; because Jews were often not allowed to be farmers, they were pushed into finance and thus handled money more than a farmer would.

    2. Some essays were just preaching to the converted: reassertions of religious dogma that believers will agree with and skeptics will ignore (such as his essay asserting that Jews must be "priests to the world.")

    3. Others didn't fit into either category but just weren't that persuasive: for example, he complains that Jews should somehow be more unified- but today, the most unified religion (Catholicism) appears to be stagnating in much of the world, while a bitterly divided Islam has the flexibility to mutate and to adapt to local conditions. If Judaism had a pope, would there really be more Jews? I doubt it. His essay on Jewish character traits is flatly self-contradictory: he asserts that Jews survive due to "flexibility" yet two pages later writes that Jews are "a stiff-necked people."

His pessimism in the last essay seems to contradict traditional Jewish theology: the tradition holds that a Messiah will set the world aright at the end of days, yet Steinsaltz despairs of Jewish survival.

    5 out of 5 stars We Jews.......2005-08-03

We Jews is an excellent read . Rabbi S. has distilled Jewish thought and life both religious and secular.

4 out of 5 stars The Jewish situation incompletely addressed .......2005-06-19

Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz is one of the great Jewish scholars and teachers of our generation. His monumental translation of the Gemara into Hebrew and then English and French has been a fundamental tool in spreading the learning of Torah. His teaching of Torah, and outreach work have made a major contribution to the Jewish world of learning in our time.
In this book Rabbi Steinsaltz makes the admirable effort of attempting to assay the Jewish situation and reality. He tries to define who the Jewish people are through essays in collective psychology and sociology. He writes about specific characteristics of the Jews , about the ability to assimilate, about the infighting which has prevented Jewish unity, about the notorious difficulty of defining a group which is neither a nation or a religion or a an ethnic group solely. He also writes about stereotypical views of the Jews in regard to Money, about the Jewish Messianic complex, about Jews being excessively Warm or Cold emotionally, about the tendency of the Jews to Idolatry, about our role in the world, about the idea of unification and how it has effected great Jewish thinkers, and finally ` about what will become of the Jewish people'.
The work also contains questions at the end of each chapter asked by Steinsaltz's faithful student and long- time editor Arthur Kurzweil. These questions aim to refine and sharpen some of the major points made in the text.
With all my great respect for Rabbi Steinsaltz, and with all my understanding that his aim is only to help the Jewish people better serve God, I found myself deeply disappointed with this work. For one thing Rabbi Steinsaltz writes of the Jewish condition almost as if the State of Israel had not existed for the past fifty- seven years, and is not a growing and central part of Jewish history and the Jewish people. Secondly, I was dismayed at the lack of factual matter involving the actual transformations in the Jewish situation which have taken place in the past twenty or thirty years. For example Rabbi Steinsaltz writes at great length about the importance of understanding the Jewish people as a family. There are great insights in his writing on this subject. However the Jewish family today in America is often a family with non- Jewish members inside it. It is not the traditional, historical Jewish family. The degree of intermarriage and assimilation occurring among the Jewish people are a central element in any assessment of our situation now. I would have expected Rabbi Steinsaltz to address this, and provide suggested ways for the Jewish people to act now. After all, the book says it is going to address the Jewish situation and tell us what we are to do.
I was deeply dismayed that the worldwide Anti- Semitic attack on the state of Israel is not considered in the book. The survival of Israel is , in my judgment anyway, the most important item on the Jewish agenda. To write so much about Jewish history and character without writing even one word about the longing for Zion, the longing for Redemption, the miraculous ingathering of Exiles is to deprive Jewish history of its heart. It is all well and good to talk about Jewish Messianism way up in the air but for the people of Israel the Messiah has always been connected with the return to Jewish sovereignty in the land of Israel. How could Rabbi Steinsaltz not consider this, not take into account in doing so , the thought of Rabbi Abraham Yitzhak Ha- Kohen Kook Z"ts"l. Rabbi Kook's idea of return to the land as connecting with worldwide redemption is a central strand of Jewish thinking and action today in Israel.
It seems to me that anyone who wishes to write a true and realistic work about the situation of the Jews today has to confront the very difficult realities the Jewish people are facing. These are in one sense demographic realities, relating to an aging, assimilating Diaspora. They are existensial problems relating to the efforts to destroy the Jewish character of the state of Israel. Rabbi Steinsaltz in this work does not even mention the divisions within Israeli political life, the fact that so many Jews have in some way turned against their own people. In this regard I would think that any `psycho-social analysis' of Jewish collective character would certainly make much more of the theme of ` betrayal' than Rabbi Steinsaltz has done.
Nonetheless for me the greatest omissions come from the other side. Nothing is said about those Jews who miraculously came and transformed a land of desert into a modern society. Nothing is said about the revival of Hebrew as a spoken language. Nothing is said about the heroic struggles of generations of Jewish soldiers who fought and fight to ensure Jewish survival in a very hostile environment. Rabbi Steinsaltz's total ignoring of these kinds of Jews makes his overall assessment of the Jewish people and their character seriously flawed.
We need today a Jewish thinker or thinkers who can really look at our situation, and strive to understand the directions we must take both for survival and for increased sanctity in serving God.
We need to face the hard realities of our situation so that we can hopefully struggle for a better Jewish future.
We need more books on this theme, and more relevant ones.

Recipes that can be thrown together in 20 minutes or less with no more than five ingredients--that's the quick and the easy of Jane Butel's Quick and Easy Southwestern Cookbook. "The two pillars of the cuisine," she writes, "are chiles, which provide the personality, and corn, which provides a great deal of the structure." Jane Butel provides the know-how. That includes how to reduce fat, plan a week's worth of cooking for a family, find ways to speed the process, and stock your pantry so you have on hand what you need to get that Southwestern flavor you are looking for.

Among the 14 chapters, you will find recipes for main dish salads, wraps, Southwest seafood, sauces and salsas, desserts, fast-cooking meat dishes, quick-action poultry, and vegetarian dishes. Try the Beef Enchilada Bake. It's a casserole combination of browned ground beef, red chile sauce, tortillas, chopped onion, grated cheese, and lettuce and chopped tomato for garnish. It cooks in 17 to 20 minutes. The Scallop Tostado Salad looks tempting. So does the Swiss Chard-Wrapped Salmon, a dish that includes chipotle chiles and slices of lime.

Jane Butel has taught Southwestern cooking for years in Albuquerque, New Mexico, so these recipes are tried and true. Home cooks looking for something new for weeknight dinners will enjoy a little chile-and-corn infusion from Jane Butel. --Schuyler Ingle

3 out of 5 stars Not One of Their Best.......2004-07-23

I love the first four of these books and have them all, given them for gifts, etc. But, this one for some reason just looks like it was thrown together at the last minute without any thought whatsoever to the designs, crafts, or the recipes. Some of the recipes are repeats from older Christmas cookbooks which I already have and the crafts, well, they're just boring and very basic. The recipes are not that good and normally, they're just incredible. I have to say that I'm extremely disappointed in this book and wish that I had bought the paperback for this one. Even the design layout of the book in general is just boring. There isn't much in the way of color in this one and it is just lacking all the way around. I know that really isn't that important, but when you're trying to do crafts and recipes, I think photos are pretty important. Better try again Gooseberry!

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite Up to Par.......2004-07-10

I'm a big fan of Gooseberry patch series, and received my copy in the mail with baited breath. Christmas Book 5 was not as good as others in the series. Why? Mostly because I found some of the crafts rather boring and drab, and nothing anyone might actually want to make... Also, there weren't quite as many recipes, and the ones which were included were mostly desserts. While I like desserts, I think there should be a fair mix of entrees and other snacks included to round out a compilation. Overall, an average book. Not quite up to par, and nothing I see myself using using for anything other than shelf weight to round out my collection.

1 out of 5 stars Should be titled "Inspirational info for those who are already professional architects or designers".......2007-09-12

This book contains nothing that I expected based on the description. I should have read the other reviews before purchasing. I can't even use it as a coffee table book. To be fair, I don't know how good this book is because it had very little to do with what the description provided. Perhaps a seasoned professional might find it of interest.

I love this book! It's been helpful in understanding what level of thought goes into each step of the design process, including how to approach different design scenarios! As a student, I totally recommend it to other students and those who are just curious!
