Book Description
At the crossroads of his life, Lipsha Morrissey is summoned by his grandmother to return to the reservation. There, he falls in love for the very first time—with the beautiful Shawnee Ray, who's already considering a marriage proposal from Lipsha's wealthy entrepreneurial boss, Lyman Lamartine. But when all efforts to win Shawnee's affections go hopelessly awry, Lipsha seeks out his great-grandmother for a magical solution to his romantic dilemma—on sacred ground where a federally sanctioned bingo palace is slated for construction.
Louise Erdrich's luminous novel The Bingo Palace is a tale of spiritual death and reawakening; of money, desperate love, and wild hope; and of the enduring power of cherished dreams.

Literary Masterpiece.......2007-05-07
This being one of Louise Erdrich's earlier works, it forms the basis and framework for the wonderful works that follow. This purchase was a gift, as it is one of my very favorite books by any writer, nevermind by Louise Erdrich, and I have an older edition permanently placed in my front bookcase (for ease or re-reads). Please, read this great book and then what follows along with the connected works by another great writer, Winona Laduke, and you have weeks, months and years of wonderful literary experiences...which will stay with you forever...I don't really want to spoil the fun, except to say that both Erdrich and Laduke write beyond the Native American genre and world: they touch the human condition and offer the experience to the reader....
Very enjoyable but read the other books first.......2005-09-07
I just love Louise Erdrich's books. I didn't read her fiction until after I read her book "Books and Islands in Ojibwe Country", which is nonfiction. Anyway, I really enjoyed this book, and while it is somewhat impossible to describe the complete plot (and saying "Lipsha is in love with Shawnee" doesn't do it justice), Lipsha is developed into a sympathetic figure, and Lyman is also rounded out more. It's amazing how LE can spin an interesting narrative out of (mostly) ordinary events. I would love to read more about Lipsha and the other, younger members of the families. They seem so real now, after reading the other books such as "Tracks", "Love Medicine", etc.
Richly told, but too mythic.......2004-09-10
Erdrich's latest novel of modern native American life centers on a bright, but aimless young man. Lipsha Morrisey is adrift, one foot in America, one on the North Dakota reservation. Son of a crazy woman and a convict, the tribe has given up on the young man who once showed promise - a product of families recalled from Erdrich's previous books "(Love Medicine," "The Beet Queen," "Tracks").
Summoned back to the reservation by his grandmother for reasons that never come clear - a last chance to make something of himself as an Indian? Lipsha falls in love with the beautiful Shawnee Ray, who's slated to marry the tribal entrepreneur, her son's father, Lyman Lamartine. Lyman is handsome, muscled, skilled in tribal traditions, worldly wealthy and ambitious for tribal power and American success. He is all that Lipsha is not.
But Lipsha believes the strength of his love is a match for all of Lyman's assets. Endowed with his mother's luck, granted him in a vision devoid of love, Lipsha begins to win at Bingo. For Shawnee Ray he amasses unearned wealth, squanders his spiritual power, dreams of greatness in his future, and wastes his present in floundering and backsliding.
Although Lipsha's present is the primary focus, the novel dips into the past with chapters centered around other tribal members including both his grandmothers, his mother, Lyman, Shawnee Ray, and Zelda Kashpaw,Lipsha's aunt and Shawnee's self-appointed guardian. There's also a Greek Chorus sort of voice that speaks with the whole tribe's sorrowful wisdom.
This organization keeps a certain distance between the novel and the reader. Lipsha's obsession widens the gulf. His hunger for Shawnee Ray so overwhelms that it bores. Shawnee becomes the focus of Lipsha's every act but there's so little contact between them that passion never develops into love. Lipsha never develops at all.
Erdrich's prose is vivid and spare, always flowing, moving. Every sentence seems infused with the long history, hardship and spiritual mystery of Indian life. Her characters are enigmatic and firmly anchored in the Dakota setting. But for all this richness, the story never connects, remaining more mysterious than moving. Readers of her earlier novels, who can place this one in a wider context, should enjoy the book more than new readers who may be left cold by too-brief glimpses into too many hearts.
Not at the same level.......2004-06-09
I fell in love with Louise Erdrich after reading her short story "Fleur". There was something gritty and seductive about her characters.
Love Medicine, The Beet Queen, Tracks and this book are all part of a saga. The Bingo Palace is the last one in the series (i believe). There is a big sense of despair in the multiple narrators. It is almost like they know their lives cannot possibly get any better. I found the book depressing and a bit lackluster compared to the previous ones.
Bits are wonderful, but still my least favorite of Erdrich's.......1998-03-13
Erdrich's novels are all about the same characters and setting, and people and stories overlap and intertwine. But this is the only novel that doesn't feel complete in and of itself. Parts of the book are simply wonderful--particularly, Lipsha's account of how he came to get a tatoo. Worth the price of admission for that story alone--but still, for an Erdrich fan, a bit of a disappointment.

Book Description
The Wild Boys is a futuristic tale of global warfare in which a guerrilla gang of boys dedicated to freedom battles the organized armies of repressive police states. Making full use of his inimitable humor, wild imagination, and style, Burroughs creates a world that is as terrifying as it is fascinating.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty standard for a post-Naked Lunch Burroughs novel.......2004-12-29
Burroughs is basically a love-him-or-leave-him writer. Using a slightly more lucid version of his "cut-up" style, The Wild Boys is a book about a group of, well, wild boys rising up in the face of a very oppressive society. Yes, there is lots of sex, most of it homosexual, but once past that Burroughs shows some interesting sociological insight. Burroughs is a satirist at heart, and in this case he is clearly on the Boys' side as he tries to "expose" the bedroom lives of the Moral Majority. However, Wild Boys brings more with a clear message to rebel against these oppressive forces and enjoy life.
We begin the book with glimpses of the corruption of the oppressing classes in a fantastical estate resembling a strange Neverland ranch. Rich people are invited to a long stay by the host where they eat, hangglide, and have sex. The starving masses are locked outside and taunted by the estate staff.
Then, we move on to the Boys' who also have their own bizzare society, but Burroughs tries hard to write it in a much more positive light. Ritualistic and spiritual, the Boys band together and fight back for their freedom.
Burroughs adds some interesting styles to the mix. Color plays a huge role and are often used to describe characters and places. Many times whole pages are nothing more than the same passage in slightly different variations written repeatedly. Sometimes these experimentations are interesting, other times they are tiresome. The plot, such as it is, starts and stops throughout the book. Some of the chapters are quite lucid and describe the war between the millitary and the Wild Boy tribes; other chapters, and the basic theme in these repeats, deal only with a few characters as they throw caution to the wind and succumb to their homosexual desires.
While this may not be the best Burroughs novel I've read, it's certainly memorable. There is a lot to discover here, but some may not be willing to wade through the uneven style or sex to find it.
Armed and dangerous.......2004-03-05
This novel reminds me of Kevin Esser's Dance of the Warriors and of the Venezuelan movie Sicario. They all deal with worlds in which gangs of teenagers are engaged in violence and sex. This is the best of the three. It is disturbing and is not for the conventional, and certainly not for the bleeding-heart types who want the United Nations to abolish the use of boys in war. Only Burroughs could have written it. The style is as unconventional as the theme. This is a world in which morality does not exist.
"Time to move into first place...".......2004-01-27
A square - a story inside other stories - the interaction of ghosts with the living - and the living with being reborn.
This was the first Burroughs I'd read. It read like a series of short stories connected like a poem. Burroughs language flows then stutters and then squares back on itself. The way he experiments with the sound and repetition of words - was exciting and something I find I do in my own writing.
I found myself keeping track of themes - St. Louis, and green (Greenbaum, Green Inn, Green Nun, Greenfield, Green Hat), and a constant reference to 1920. I haven't read much biography on Burroughs; that should come next.
Burroughs exploration of a future that becomes more primitive even as it advances, his unabashed and open erotic descriptions as a consequence of his future rather than as an expected sidetrip, and his clean and no holds barred language require that I read more of his work.
You All Are Beatnik Sheep.......2003-01-06
Quite simply this was the most tastless and ignorant piece of literature I have ever read. It seemed as if the book felt like convoluting any actual storyline with scenes of gratuitous and repetive sex. Is it just me or does everyone in this damned book seem to carry a tin of vaseline? I thought there were some interesting parts but, call me a prude or an ignorant little ... but I think this book was riding on the current of the Naked Lunch which has been the wave on which Burroughs had carried his wrinkly disgusting body upon. This book is pretty much like a David Lynch film. No one gets it, they just talk about it and pretend that they do so they look intelligent but quite simply they are just beatnik sheep ready for slaughter by the corporate identity you have tried so hard to avoid with your lies and propaganda of free intellectual thought, which is disguising your true ignorance and gullibility
A new world, of danger.......2002-03-13
This futuristic tale of a band of guerrilla boys fighting against the repressive police and government agents is told through Burroughs's imaginative style, which is more about creating atmosphere and using the language itself as part of the narrative web than about creating a sharply linear story. It's like an abstract painting through images and words, so it's difficult to elaborate on plot. Interspersed are pornographic scenes of gay sex between characters, which give the story a hallucinatory sensuality. The language rhythms become more accessible as the reader travels deeper into the story and enters the world Burroughs is creating, which isn't such a bad place to visit after all.
Book Description
Daily prayers based on the spiritual riches of the ancient Celtic tradition.
This lavishly illustrated daily prayer book draws on the great spiritual insights and wisdom of the Celtic church, offering prayers and Scripture readings for every morning and evening of the week.
Each day Celtic Benediction invites readers to meditate on a different aspect of the creation story from Genesis. On Sunday the theme is light. In the morning, the prayers and readings lead us to seek the light of the life of God in all his creatures. At night, we meditate on the light that no darkness can overcome as we bring the world and its needs to God. And so on through each day of the week: water, the fruitful earth, the animal world, humanity, playful rest, and all that God has made draw us into intimate prayer. Related Scripture readings are also given for each day of the year, making this a book to use constantly.
Illustrated throughout with colored panels from the Lindisfarne Gospels, Celtic Benediction offers contemporary Christians a unique devotional experience to treasure for a lifetime.

Beautiful Introduction.......2007-08-24
this beautiful little book is a "daily office" with a very simple order for morning, mid-day, and evening prayer. The prayers composed by J. Phillip Newell are beautiful and inspiring, as well as a good introduction to Celtic Christian Spirituality. The art work is also wonderful.
Helpful Prayers.......2006-08-31
Sometimes just reading a beautifully worded prayer helps to jump start your own prayer life. Consider this short collection to be the mother of all Celtic Prayer jump starters.
Lyrical and lovely!
beautiful prayer language.......2006-08-21
Provides a beautiful structure, with very open language, for quiet time with self and the Divine. Poetic prayer language that launches one into silence, reflection and mystery.
beautiful, short, simple, and profound.......2006-02-24
An absolutely lovely book. I use it daily. When connected with Centering prayer, Christian Meditation (John Main's), or some other prayer practice, it can complete your daily prayer. If one were to actually follow the outline in the book, and spend the time to "be still and aware of God's presence within and all around", what else would you need? ;^)
my favorite.......2006-01-30
This has been my favorite prayer book over the past few years. I use it often when I don't have words for my own prayers or on behalf of another person. I find that Newell's wording expresses my faith and my hopes for how God works in our world.

Book Description
"Is there anyone who doesn't inwardly melt at the sight of a golden glazed pie crust with its little cottage chimney of steam wafting the scent of buried juices, the auguries of delight of what lies beneath? A classic steak and kidney, a soothing chicken pie, the crisp crumbliness of a raised hot water pie crust, the sugar-topped exuberance of a fruit pie, its crackling of sweetness concealing the acid fruit below, the buttery spiced whiff of an apple pie..."
Tarts with Tops On is a celebration of the pie, this most traditional, comforting, and delicious of foods, as enjoyable in the making as in the eating.
Tamasin Day-Lewis draws upon classic combinations to create her own versions of many savory pies, such as Bacon and Egg Pie; the Cornish Pasty; Tourte de Pacques, a traditional Easter pie with eggs, artichokes, and spinach; Hunter's Pie; and a delicious Feta, Rice and Yogurt Pie.
There is a selection of Other People's Pies, Sweet Pies, and a chapter on American Pies that includes Shaker Lemon; Key Lime; Mississippi Mud and Jefferson Davis Pies.
Tamasin shows how to make pastry for every type of pie, easy infallible recipes that produce pastry invariably superior to anything you can buy.
Savory or sweet, simple or sophisticated, traditional or innovative, Tarts with Tops On has a pie to impress for every occasion.
Customer Reviews:
Some Really Unusual Tarts Here. Very Attractive Book!.......2005-03-27
`The Art of the Tart' and `Tarts With Tops On' by noted English culinary writer, Tamasin Day-Lewis both have the outward appearance of books on the express line to the discount table. And, while many good books have suffered that fate, that appearance should not be held against these two volumes. It is important to distinguish this book from the excellent volumes on general pastry making such as Rose Levy Beranbaum's `The Pie and Pastry Bible' or Nick Malgieri's `Perfect Pastry' or Flo Brakker's `The Simple Art of Perfect Baking, or Gayle Ortiz' `The Village Baker's Wife'. It is also playing in a different league than the excellent `Mes Tartes' by Christine Ferber. All of these spend many pages on the ins and outs of pastry technique. Ms. Ferber's volume is especially interesting if you are devoted to the French approach to pastry, which is just a bit different than what you will get from the American experts.
When I first browsed through Ms. Day-Lewis' books, the absence of the heavy concentration on technique and the many familiar names of classic tart and pie recipes had me discounting the books as not worth my attention. The opening tart with a top on was nothing more than a classic chicken potpie that I have made following better instructions from James Beard.
The first thing that began redeeming the books in my eyes was the quality of the writing. Ms. Day-Lewis has a way with phrases that seems to owe more than a little from the writing style of M.F.K. Fisher, although the writer to which she seems to pay the greatest homage is Jane Grigson. In spite of a few misstatements such as the notion that pastry making was a science, `but not an exact science', her general observations are quite a pleasure to read and make me want to read more of her books.
Both books include chapters on `other people's recipes', and some of the most interesting material is in these chapters. Some of the borrowing is from Nigel Slater who is a writer like Day-Lewis and unlike Nigella Lawson and Jamie Oliver, whose works have not made a very big impression on this side of the pond. Others are attributed to Claudia Roden, who has made a big splash over here. Many others are attributed to friends and relatives. Regardless of the source, all these recipes are pretty far removed from your garden-variety tomato tart. Some recipes such as Michel Roux's Tourte au Jambon et Tomme de Pyrenees require ingredients such as black truffles and hard Pyrenees sheep's milk cheese which are just a bit to dear or too much trouble to acquire. Others in this chapter are both very simple and very fetching. Two that caught my eye were Nigel Slater's Stilton, Onion, and Potato "Frying Pan" pie and Deborah's Luxury Meat Loaf Pie. Both recipes are small variations on very common dishes, but the small improvements are worth a bundle of raves at the dinner table.
The next chapter of recipes for pies covers eight variations on apple pie. Aside from the plain vanilla apple pie, all were pretty unusual, but certainly not difficult. I did miss a recipe for Tart Tatin, but I suspect I probably already have five or six recipes for this classic on my shelves already. Another reason the Tart Tatin does not appear with these apple pies is because the first book already includes nine recipes for lidless apple tarts, including the famous Tatin dessert. The first book also includes a perfect recipe for entertaining with an English theme, a treacle tart.
The next recipe chapter of pie recipes covers classic American pies. Among these eleven recipes are peach pie, pecan pie, blueberry pie, pumpkin pie, and key lime pie, but no Pennsylvania Dutch molasses cake, which of course is much more of a pie than a cake.
Among the recipes for sweet pies, there are a few with unusual ingredients such as gooseberries and a few which simply did not appeal to me such as the raspberry ice cream pie, which I considered a misnomer, as the filling was not a true churned ice cream but more like a simple frozen custard.
If your cookbook collecting leans toward those that look good and read well, then these books are for you. They are also very interesting if you have a special attraction to baking tarts and pies, and already have the basic techniques securely under your belt. If you are a novice with pastry, then I suggest you take a by on these and check out the four titles I cited at the beginning of the review.
I will note that for the very nice binding, photography, and the build-in page marking ribbon, these books are very reasonably priced, which make them even more attractive if you are fond of attractive culinary books.
If you are always on the lookout for unusual pie and tart recipes, don't give it another thought and put in your order for these lovelies.
Gorgeous book, a great gift.......2004-05-10
Far more variety of recipes that the title might suggest. Not just desserts but entrees, too. A really beautiful book; would make a lovely gift for someone who likes to cook & is looking for something new.

Customer Reviews:
A cool book, but..........2006-12-09
I have Mitch Frumkin's first two books, and I must admit this one is better, picture wise. His first two contained just b&w photos and not much text. This book is wall to wall color, which really brings the ads to life; some ads are even reproduced in their original size. Very cool - A+ on that account. However, this book contains much more text, which should have been a nice compliment to the ads, but unfortunately, there are a number of errors. Yes, I realize that one person cannot possibly know every little detail, and we are constantly finding out new facts about muscle cars, but if you have the ads in front of you, and hopefully the magazines they came out of, you should know the correct years of the cars and the dates the ads ran. In other words, model year 1971 cars were not advertised in late 1969.
Also, I feel a number of historic ads were left out in this publication that should have been included. For example, there were several ads that were pulled by the manufacturers almost immediately after they ran, because they were considered too contraversial. None of these are here. Maybe Mitch wanted to offer the public some fresh material. The problem here is, his first two books are out of print. Quality used copies are going for good money and are becoming hard to find.
Aside from those two nick-picky points, overall, it is a cool book. Would make a great gift. Buy a really nice used copy, you won't be disappointed.
Nostalgia Trip.......2005-03-05
I was impressed by Muscle Car Mania and Son of Muscle Car Mania but Mitch came up trumps this time as we benefit from colour print - the best way to see the psycadelic Plymouth ads of the 60's. If you like muscle cars buy this book.

This book has a lot of step-by-step instr. that was very helpful to a novice. It goes into how to trace, the use of the colors, clipping(snipping), tools and paper.
I would consider it along with Carla Larter's: Parchment Craft to be a COMPLETE and THOROUGH help and class in this field.
I am glad reading the reviews before me - save me from bying the same book with just different covers. I bought them both used, and they were new! Sincerely Linda

I totally agree that we can feel conned this way. I bought another book also with a different cover and ISBN but the contents are the SAME! This is unacceptable. We who buy from the web will never have the chance to look at the contents before buying and we rely heavily on the cover and descriptions!
Same book, same author - different cover.......2002-03-24
Are you aware that this book entitled 'Pergamano Parchment Craft' - Step by Step Crafts by Martha Ospina - ISBN 1 85974 877 5 has exactly the same contents as a similarly entitled book which has a different cover and a different ISBN number - 1 58923 020 5.
I have ended up with two books with different covers, different ISBN numbers but with exactly the same contents by the same author.
Both books issued in 2001.
This cannot be right.
I feel conned.

after checking out this book from our local library, I simply had to have it. I have started to make my own window treatments amd this book gave good discriptive terms that were easy to understand. The pictures made the projects less intimating. This book is easy to understand with basic but important information
Book Description
Corporate identity, the design and marketing buzzphrase of the 80s and 90s, has undergone a revolution in the last five years. Now the talk is of branding. With the growth of globalisation and the increasing realization among corporations large and small that this is their only way of distinguishing themselves, large sections of the design industry have adapted to offer new services and meet the new branding challenges.
Arranged in thematic chapters with an introduction,
Beyond Logos identifies and deconstructs the kind of corporate move that turns a footwear store into a `cathedral' and a cigarette brand into a smoker's retreat. It tracks the rise of the brand and pinpoints the role played by design companies in creating the experience economy -- a world in which corporations do not have identities but brands, visions, big ideas.
Beyond Logos shows how, as we enter the 21st century, we are being taken beyond logos.

Book Description
Penny Marshall has proven to be more than the tart half of Laverne and Shirley. The director of such commercial hits as Big, Awakenings, and A League of their Own, Marshall is the only female director with an established track record whose involvement will get a film "greenlighted".
Penny Marshall: An Unauthorized Biography is the first book to take an in-depth look at how Marshall went from acting on sitcoms to becoming a studio-connected, formidable force behind the camera.
Customer Reviews:
Don't waste your time..........2004-09-09
I just finished this book, and I have to say that I thought it was completely thoughtless and off-track. Crown's portrayal of Marshall leaves something to be desired. The book comes off to me as a quick money-making scheme that's purpose is not to discover the "real" Penny Marshall, but to deliver some juicy gossip that will hopefully intrigue the reader. I found the book to be informative on behind-the-scenes Hollywood, as well as on television and film production, but overall it was a complete waste of my time. If you're looking for a personal account of Penny's life/experiences, this is not the book for you.

Penny Marshall-is cool! I love her on Laverne & Shirley, which is my fave show & on Nick-@-Nite on Saturdays. I'm getting the book for Christmas. I like the other cast members of L&S: Cindy Williams, Michael McKean, David L. Lander, Betty Garrett, Phil Foster, & Eddie Mekka-along w/most of the guest stars.
A Penny for your thoughts.......2000-03-29
Sure she has a famous brother who provided her a way in to showbiz, but who's to say that she wouldn't have made it herself? "We'll do it our way, and make all our dreams come true." She's certainly talented enough. The cool thing about this book is that it's more than a biography. It's about television in the sixties and seventies, too, because Penny had some kind of connection with all the big shows through her brother Garry, her husband Rob Reiner, or any of her many famous friends.
