Book Description
Iris Vegan, a young, impoverished graduate student from the Midwest, finds herself entangled with four powerful but threatening characters as she tries to adjust to life in New York City. Mr. Morning, an inscrutable urban recluse, employs Iris to tape-record verbal descriptions of objects that belonged to a murder victim. George, a photographer, takes an eerie portrait of Iris, which then acquires a strange life of its own, appearing and disappearing without warning around the city. After a series of blinding migraines, Iris ends up in a hospital room with Mrs. O., a woman who has lost her mind and memory to a stroke, but who nevertheless retains both the strength and energy to torment her fellow patient. And finally, there is Professor Rose, Iris's teacher and eventually her lover. While working with him on the translation of a German novella called The Brutal Boy, she discovers in its protagonist, Klaus, a vehicle for her own transformation and ventures out into the city again-this time dressed as a man.

A delightful first experience of Siri.......2007-03-31
This was my first book of Siri's and it was a delightful book. I could relate to Iris and her struggles as some related to my life. What touched me was her drive to keep going even in the hardest times and yet lost herself to survive too. How many of us would just love to be some body else for a while. I cried and laughed with and at Iris. When she shared her story to Paris of her police incident I laughed so hard because I could imagine the thoughts going through his head. "What are friends for but to have a good laugh." I do hope that Siri will continue another book about Iris. I would like to find out if she ever finds love and if she is alright in other areas of her life. This is the first book that I hated to see end.
A sexy and smart slow burn of a book.......2005-09-21
Siri Hustvedt's novels, to me, are like the literary equivalent of Edward Hopper's paintings: portraying that haunting sense of abandonment and alienation in an anonymous American city landscape. Coincidentally, both The Blindfold and The Enchantment of Lily Dahl has a a voyeur protagonist watching people through the windows of their apartments at night, a recurring subject of Hopper's work.
Told in four interconnecting short stories, narrator Iris Vegan instantly draws the reader into her offbeat world populated by quirky characters and bizarre situations. Fresh out of Columbia University in New York, the graduate student's exploration and experimentation with the darker side of life is reminiscent of Bret Easton Ellis territory in Less That Zero and a little disturbing to say the least.
Hustvedt's writing is beautiful, though; a deceptively simple spare prose that is polished and powerful. An intelligent and ingenious sexy slow burn of a book that grips you from the onset and makes you think as you savour each lingering sentence.
This is the kind of cult word-of-mouth book college girls will hug and hold dearly with an honest and real female character at the heart of its story who feels like an old friend.
Of Identity.......2005-04-20
It is funny indeed how coincidences play with your mind. Just before I receievd this book to write a review for a news site that I'm working on in my country, I was listening to David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust. While song was playing, I started reading. And somehow, something snapped in my mind, some fray thoughts connected, and everything sat in its place.
This is the story about the young and talented student (how many times have you heard this), who is, or is going trough an identity crisis, failing to find herself in a compelling and misterious but mostly unfair world.
Four short stories connected into a romanesque form speak of an impossibility to describe anyting with words or voice (story one), speak of a love lost and love found, of a way in which artists put themseles outside of the world (story two), speak of a hospital existance (story three) and finally, the longest and most upsetting one that speaks of identity lost, and identity found.
So what's so special about it. Maybe the possible answer is the thing what I felt about it, it was almost like you can feel the pulse, you can feel the life itself imprisoned into a cage of paper, that is struggling to break free, to live and breath again without the boundaries of literature. It is almost that you can hear the scream coming from those pages: "Let me out! We live, and we want to be alive.!"
Maybe you would find more compelling material in a work of Marguerite Duras or Toni Morrison, but Siri Hustvedt isn't the author you should ignore...
appealing.......2003-12-05
This is an enjoyable read. But to really get the most of the first chapter read Auster's Moon Palace first; it is a delightful hommage, as Hustvedt reworks themes in Auster's novel.
3 and a half. intriguing, yet not all there.......2002-10-20
The Blindfold is a novel, yet it reads more like series of interconnected short stories - all concerning the same character: Iris Vegan - skipping back and forth through time. The premise of each chapter/story lures you in: she works for a collector of a dead girls objects and is asked to examine each one and whisper about it in detail on a tape recorder; she has a strange affair with a man named Stephen, never knowing where things stand... he has a friend who takes her photograph, and the picture circulates like some kind of urban legend - everyone knows who she is, although her face is never shown; she ends up in a hospital due to severe migraines and has a strange encounter with the old woman next to her; she translates a disturbing german novella and then takes the main character's identity -roaming the streets of NYC at night dressed as a man; in the final section she has an affair with a married man that ultimately ends badly - then there's a strange ending that I won't give away, but it left me with a feeling of "that's it? this is the place you were leading us to?"
The book, rich with oddity and intensity, ends on a bland, the author got bored, note.

ANOTHER HIT.......2007-03-09
Bertrice Small is by far the BEST historical romance author EVER!! It all started for me with Skye O'Mally and she has never dissapointed me. Her discriptions of the gowns and homes paint a picture in your mind and when she describes the food you can almost taste it. Another book I couldn't put down.
A by a person who loves to read historical novels.......2006-08-23
I have not completed the book, because I am reading another one for a book club. But, what I have read, I am enjoying. I really like all Beatrice Small's book. I love the historical part of her writing. She does bring her charactors into some pretty interesting places. Ms. Small seems to know about the history of all her interesting places. I don't know if she knows about as much as she writes about, but she has me convinced that she does some homework on the sites. I am 65 and feel very comfortable reading her books. She brings a lot of life to a book. And, I love history.
Only if I were in solitary confinement in prison and this was the book.......2006-01-26
the only book available to read....I guess I would slog through this romantic sludge of idiocy. People who like this kind of garbarge aren't worth comment. Park this book in the outhouse for emergency use of toilet paper. Obviously, women who read this are trying to live through these female characters---and reveal themselves to be the schizoid nutcases that they really are. Get real, get a life, get a job!
Just beyond the bedroom (yawn!).......2005-09-18
This is not the worst Small novel (no...that would be The Innocent) nor is it the most boring (That would be The Duchess, another largely forgettable read) but it is bad and and it is boring...End it already. Flanna is an uninteresting heroine. Usually Small's charcters are larger than life, the most intelligent, most beautiful, most adventurous, they can ride, hunt, read and speak 7 languages, they are fabulously wealthy and independent, wilful, seductive...etc. Flanna is a flop. And Patrick Leslie is a fop. Nothing heroic about this mama's boy. There's no romantic plot--just tons of history. Its not even woven into the story but instead reads like a text book. I love historicals and this period of history, but after reading the prologue even I was rolling my eyes. Drier than toast. Small thinks pepperingt her story (every 30 pages or so) with sex between Flanna and Patrick makes up for the lack of plot or raomance...it does not. Worse yet, it is not even sexy or erotic. The scenes are mechanical and dull. It seemed for a while like she was going to copy a subplot form Love Wild and Fair but changed her mind. In fact the whole book reads likes a panopoly of vignettes from prior books whitout ever following through. Get some new material already! Moreover the book is contemporaneously tied to another novel, Intrigued (which is not intriguing at all). And the end of JBT leaves the reader hanging. Why? You guessed it, The story continues in Vixens (another lackluster attempt from Small). If you want to read some of Small's best, read The kadin and its sequel Love Wild and fair (which also tie into JBT); Betrayed is anoter great Scottish romance; Skye O'malley and All the Sweet Tomorrows are the best of the Skye series; Adora and beloved are two of her best early novels; and last but by no means least, if you crave something erotic, Helion is the hottest novel by Small so far. (And best of all, no harems!)
This was just bad.......2004-05-06
I have only read this book once, because i just can not bring myself to pick it up again and suffer. i got so tired of the female lead going on about how she didn't want to be known as the " do naught duchess". It got really irritating. And Patrick was nothing like any of Ms. Small's former male leads. i kept hoping for a brick to hit him and knock him silly. This will be the only book of Ms. Small's i'll never purchase new. there was no adventure, no spark, nothing but my own determination to finish this book.

Scott Adams, creator of the popular comic strip "Dilbert," has written a modern-day parable about a young man and an unlikely mentor. God's Debris starts with a young deliveryman trying to hand over a package to a man with a San Francisco address. But delivering the package to this old man proves to be as difficult as trying to understand the meaning of God.
"It's for you," the old man tells the narrator, gesturing to the package.
"What's in the package?" the narrator asks.
"It's the answer to your question."
"I wasn't expecting any answers,"
the deliveryman admits. About this time, the narrator begins to realize that he's not dealing with a feeble-minded old man; he's dealing with a situation that could alter his life. The sincerity and metaphysical complexity of this fable will surprise those who expect comedy, but Adams is following a tradition set by such writers as Dan Millman (Way of the Peaceful Warrior) and Richard Bach (Illusions). As in many parables that have come before, the deliveryman learns the meaning of life from an illusive mentor who seems to arise from a wrinkle in time. The cleverness of the God's Debris concept is original and bound to leave readers pondering some altered definitions of God, the universe, and just about everything else. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
In God's Debris, best-selling author and creator of Dilbert Scott Adams fashioned a thought-provoking exploration of life's great mysteries (everything from quantum physics and God to psychic phenomena and dating) that quickly captured the attention and imaginations of readers everywhere. The intriguing story of a deliveryman who meets the world's smartest person and learns the secret of reality is threaded with a variety of hypnosis techniques that Adams, a certified hypnotist, used to induce a feeling of euphoric enlightenment in readers to mirror the main character's feelings as he discovers the true nature of the universe.Launched to coincide with the hardcover publication of its sequel, The Religion War (see opposite page), this first paperback edition of God's Debris will soon make the leap to a broader audience. As Adams designed it, the book will "make your brain spin around inside your skull" and drive readers toward The Religion War as they seek to confirm or deny the dizzying impressions and chaotic memories of reading God's Debris. The book provides one of the most compelling visions of reality ever experienced on the printed page. Along the way, readers will enjoy the Thought Experiment: Trying to discover what's wrong with the sage's explanation of reality. This is a book, as Adams says, to be shared and savored with smart friends.
Download Description
God's Debris is a set of provocative questions (thought experiments) about God and science, wrapped in a fictional story. It is designed to inspire readers to question their views of reality.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting -- And mostly in a good way.......2007-08-10
God's Debris is interesting. And I think that this was the author's intent really. The book asks a lot of questions, makes the reader ask more and answers none of them. In fact, by the end I am not any more convinced or sure of anything before I read the book except that all those questions I had about whether God existed -- and if so in what form and for what purpose -- are the same ones we all ask. We all have to ask. Whether we believe or not, no matter what our definition of God, the questioning is an important part of faith. It is what you believe after the question that matters.
That said I would recommend the book. But don't think that because it is tiny that you can wiz through it. God's Debris requires and deserves your careful attention--and an open mind.

Confessions of an Introvert: The Shy Girl's Guide to Career, Networking and Getting the Most Out of Life
Interesting provocation; good starting point for group discussions.......2007-06-15
Scott Adams rambles all over the philosophical world in God's Debris, his first non-Dilbert book, which attempts to slaughter most of the world's sacred cows. This book of philosophy surprised his fans when published in 2001; after all, most times a celebrity in one field takes on another, we end up with something like Eddie Murphy's music video.
His sections on religion and science are best, perhaps because those are more objective subjects. The sections on relationships and the practical applications of the stated philosophy are weaker, and come off as a cheesy self-help book.
The first-person prose is not great, coming off as a mix between a film noir detective thriller and the narration of The Wonder Years. It performs its function, however, of distancing the ideas from statements of truth. Adams writes in the forward: "I call it a 132-page thought experiment wrapped in a fictional story...You won't discover my opinions by reading my fiction."
Another drawback of the prose, however, is the way it forces him to explain each step of the reasoning. He has to build his arguments like houses of cards, where any one flaw seems to take down the entire structure. The way he does so shows a lot of ego from the Avatar's perspective. The overall concepts once he finishes explaining them are strong, but the hubris makes me skeptical of the execution.
The real value of reading God's Debris is in the discussions that inevitably come out of it. The book is an excellent provocateur, and I agree with him that it's best to "share God's Debris with a smart friend and then discuss it while enjoying a tasty beverage." It's best to not take these ideas for absolute truth, but reading it with friends will certainly help you find out what you really believe yourself.
Touching the tip of this finger with the tip of this finger.......2007-03-15
There is something unique about this book but what it is I cannot say. It reminds me of of Zen Koan. And it also reminds me of the philosophy espoused by Osho and Alan Watts to a lesser extent. Really just questioning existence, conciousness and belief. This is the kind of book that really makes your head spin with ideas. I could not stop reading once I started. And I certainly recommend this highly to people who have read widely on religion and science. There is something metaphysical about this and I applaud Scott Adams. This is the work of a genius and that's always been clear to me when looking deeper into the Dilbert cartoons. And now looking deeper into the soul, the origin, the meaning of life. Scott Adams ranks up there with Douglas Adams in original thinking and wit.
To the point.......2007-01-11
After reading this book I am able to appreciate what Richard Mitchell means by 'since time and place mean nothing to an alien trying to understand humanity' in his book 'The Gift of Fire'.
It was interesting to read about the observed motion seen in a timescale of many years contrasted with human life's dot appearance. Now I understand what a professed utilitarian that I know was trying to say with why should humans think themselves superior compared to other animals.
I really liked the statement where Scott says imagine the cosmos is gone sort of things.. while in fantasy you see the existence of new worlds.. I think he is creative when he says forget about things we know itself for a while..
It was even more interesting to read his explanation of Gods Debris
not a Dilbert book .......2007-01-07
I wasn't expecting a Dilbert book, but maybe a bit like a Dilbert book. But it is something completely different. Enjoyable to read, something to think about, but like the Dilbert book, not to be taken to seriously. If you want to discuss the existence of God in a Monty Python kind of setting, buy this book.

My favorite low carb cookbook!.......2005-02-17
I have nearly every low carb cookbook known to man, but this one is definitly my favorite. It's not for those just starting out with low carb (meaning, those on Induction levels) since Fiona is more liberal with fruits and certain vegetables that are not permitted in the beginning. But once you've moved on to Ongoing Weight Loss phases and beyond (or if you're just low carb in general) this will quickly become a favorite. Since I am nearly at goal weight I've had to lower calories significantly and that is why this cookbook caters so perfectly to me. Although she does have some more "luxurious" dishes with rich ingredients, most of the recipes utilize lean meats and good fats (like olive oil) over things like lard or butter. (I've found most other low carb cookbooks use excessive fat, meaning a dish could have 700 calories or more at times). Some exceptionaly good recipes include the roasted red bell pepper and feta cheese fritatta, the roasted chicken quarters with pear (not the exact title), the mashed cauliflower, the turnip and rutabaga chips, the lamb chops with tomato sauce (not exact title) and her breakfast shakes. I'm still working my way through this book, but I have yet to be disappointed...

SIMPLY THE BEST COMIC PRICE GUIDE!.......2006-07-31
Comics Values Annual 2006 is Krause Publications, publishers of the long-running Comic Buyer's Guide. I've been a big fan of KP's comic price guides as a great alternative to the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide. My main problem with Overstreet is the endless pages of ads you get in each new edition that grows longer each year. I don't need 150 pages of dealer ads and with eBay, who really needs these dealers anyway? I just want prices and information which is what Comics Values Annual 2006 delivers in a no-frills package.
This edition gives a brief overview of the industry, a grading guide, and features an interview with Ghost Rider artist Mark Texeira, before getting right to the guide and prices. The CV Annual is very different from the Overstreet in its layout, Rather than simply list each title alphabetically, this guide lists titles alphabetically by MAJOR publisher beginning with DC and then continuing with Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, Classics Illustrated, and then tossing in miscellaneous Golden Age titles, Misc. B & W, titles, and misc. color titles from modern publishers like Valiant, Gold Key, Gladstone, Malibu, etc...Now this may not be to every collector's liking as we've been conditioned to one type of delivery, but I personally like it. I mean it's still a Marvel and DC world to most collectors, especially in regards to Silver and Golden Age books so why have to thumb through all the junk no one's interested in when Marvel and DC have their own sections.
The editors have obviously ordered the book by importance with the DC and Marvel sections first, followed by the miscellaneous Golden Age titles, followed by the Dark Horse and Image sections before the final misc. section with Classics Illustrated bringing up the rear. The other major difference is that the Comic Values Annual lists each issue (almost) separately, rather than just a span of issues. This allows the book to list important information for each issue such as the initials of a noted artist or writer, the story title, special character appearances, etc...
If I had to say the one huge advantage that the Comics Values Annual 2006 has over the Overstreet guide its that it is more user-friendly. The Guide lists only a NM value for each book but the grading guide in the back of the book easily allows you to figure out prices for any grade of comic. In all there are over 94,000 comics listed. Krause keeps putting out great comic book price guides and they have become my book of choice and I've been a collector for over thirty years!

Re: How do you spell Freddie?.......2003-11-18
Freddie Mercury's name is spelled correctly in this title. Just because some people may prefer to spell it with a 'y' does not make it the correct spelling. That is how the man spelled it.
How do you spell Freddie.......2001-06-27
I didn't buy this book. I wouldn't buy a book about someone where the author couldn't make the effort to spell the subject's name correctly. Makes me wonder how accurate the rest of the book is...
very weak, dry, and disorganized book.......1999-11-14
This book is not worth paper it was printed on, pretty muchlike the rest of the books about Freddie Mercury. I guess, it isespecially difficult to write about him, because when he died, he did not leave an autobiography or, at least, some decent interviews. It seems like he rarely answered questions seriously and did not really like talking to the press. Nevertheless, everyone familar with Queen, must know that he was, indeed, "living on the edge" in all respects. So, this book does not say anything new or anything coherent. It lacks purpose, strength, and accuracy that should be present, when writing about such enormous genius like Freddie Mercury. Listening to his music, his own statements (however rare), and his jokes still beats reading lame bios about him.
We all Live on the Edge.......1999-10-30
Looking around me I see people living on the edge. But Freddie was to intelligent to understand where his limits were. When he found out that he had HIV he changed, but it was too late, He then realized life was going over the edge and there was nothing he could do to stop it. The Man was always ahead of his time in his thinking and his music. Although Freddie is gone to those who loved him he will always live on. I have bought every book I can find on him, and one of the most personal one about was written by his Lover Jim Hutton, it isnt easy to get your hands on either, i know it upset many people becasue it was more like a kiss and tell, but if you want to know what Freddie's last few years was like even up to the moment he died then find the book and read it.
dry but some new information.......1999-09-10
I found the book hard to read. Too much about Queen in general rather than Freddie. I would like to know about Him- his daily routine, what set him off, what turned Him on,what happened with Mary, any funny stories from fans/groupies that may have had the pleasure of His company-if even for an hour! Things like that! Not concert info and how the band got started-trhings that I already know from books that were meant for that! This is Freddie Mercury Living on the edge!! I was hoping for more excitement!
