Book Description
On the last day of May 1916, one hundred and fifty British ships, manned by sixty thousand sailors, confronted the German High Sea Fleet of one hundred ships and forty five thousand men in the icy North Sea at the epic battle of Jutland. Young Nicholas Everard distinguishes himself and wins a DSC. This is naval warfare, as close as one can get without actually having been there.
Customer Reviews:
my review.......2005-08-22
Good action story. The personal lives story was a bit contrived, and boring. Fortunately very little of the book concerns this. Once the battle begins hold on. The battle sequences are very accurate. I gave this book to a retired naval destroyer commander, and he loved it.
The First of a Great Series.......2005-08-09
At first blush, the Everard family doesn't look like much on which to base a series of heroic sailors. Hugh, drummed out of the service before the war in some unnamed scandal but pulled back in because of the emergency, is in love with his brother John's wife. John, a general in the army in France, does not make an appearance, but his sons Nick and David do. Nick is feckless and irresponsible, just one step ahead of being drummed out of the Royal Navy himself, while David is more professional if somewhat dull. That in the course of the book, one's opinion of everyone changes 180 degrees is a tribute to the author's skill at both showing character development and also at revealing a character's past layer by layer, like peeling an onion.
The criticism commonly made about this book merely shows the inability of some critics to appreciate the intent of the book they are reviewing. Yes, the book is choppy and yes, it is hard to follow the course of the action. One's initial impulse is to wish for maps and an appendix, but then you realize that this is the whole point. Fullerton's goal is to present to the reader exactly how fighting the Battle of Jutland felt to those who were there. Jutland was a confusing battle and it was many days before those who were there had the foggiest notion of the sequence of events. Fullerton has studied the battle carefully and everything that happened in real life happens here at exactly the same time. But you can't construct a coherent whole out of the narrative, just as even Lord Jellicoe wasn't able to do so. For that, you need to consult another book (I would recommend Rules of the Game by Andrew Gordon, which is not only the finest description of the battle, but one of the finest works of military history), but do it after you read this book, so that you get the full flavor of the writer's intent.
Very few writers capture the fog of war as well as Fullerton does.
Slow starting, a lot of characters, ends in great action!.......2003-10-30
The Blooding of The Guns is a historical/fiction story about the biggest sea battle of World War I, The Battle of Jutland. The main character is Nick Everard who is a sub-lieutenant in the Royal Navy (not a submarine LT; about the same rank as an American LTjg (junior grade) aboard the DD Lanyard. Nick has several family members who are also in the service. Nick's brother David, is the Navigating Officer on the CA Bantry. Nick's uncle, Hugh, is the Captain of the BB Nile. Also, Nick's Dad is a Brigadier General in the army.
75% of the story was boring to me. It starts out slow, and slowly starts to build up to the Battle. The last 3-4 chapters is full of excitement. While in the middle of this book, I was under the personal belief that I would not purchase the next book in this nine book series. However, with the last 3-4 chapters, it made me think twice about my overall view. This book is full of great details of describing the different stations aboard the ships that the main characters are on. The descriptions of the battle and of battle damage is really good. The main draw back to the story is the number of people in this story. There are three main ships in this story; Nile, Lanyard, and Bantry. Trying to keep up with the story and trying to remember who is on what ship was so difficult that I had to start a list of personal for the three ships to help me keep track. The author does not tip you off when the action goes from one ship to the next. So that is where my personal list came in handy. Just one example of the number of names aboard just one ship is as follows. Aboard the DD Lanyard, the ship that Nick is on, there are several LT's mentioned including 2 sub-LT's, with one being the Navigator. There is a Captain, Surgeon, several Petty Officers, a few Chiefs including a Chief Engineer, a Leading Seaman, a gunner, a Leading Signalman, and a steward. Not to mention a few that I left out. The BB Nile and CA Bantry has even more personal. That's a lot of names to keep track of!
So now to conclude: Yes, this book had a very strong ending. However, I'm not planning on following up with this series. In my view, having 50 different people to remember is too much!!!
Review - The Blooding Of The Guns.......2003-06-21
Action aplenty. Alexander Fullarton writes with authority, knows his subject and has an eye for history. It is without a doubt the best narrative of The Battle Of Jutland by any author or historian in the business.
Magnificent High- Seas Action.......2002-12-31
I just finished Alexander Fullerton's "The Blooding of the Guns" and my heart is still beating faster than it should. This is an outstanding work of naval fiction. Fullerton follows three men, the Everards(each on separate ships), during the Battle of Jutland. Swiftly shifting from one vessel to the next, the author manages to convey some of the confusion and "fog of battle" that plagued both the British and the Germans during this, the greatest naval battle of WWI. Fullerton's knowledge of nautical terms and early 20th century Royal Navy practices and customs creates a staggeringly realistic action novel. For readers tired of the stodgy, plodding works of Patrick O'Brian, or the gee-whiz gimmicks of Ludlum and Dale Brown, or who simply prefer dreadnoughts over wood and sails, Fullerton is a rare and welcome addition to the short list of truly authentic war novelists.

Book Description
An affecting classic romance from Christy Award-winning author Angela Hunt
Her mother's tragic death led Jacquelyn Wilkes to her career as a nurse, in hopes of saving others from similar sorrow. But her carefully built world was shaken when a new doctor, Jonah Martin, arrived at the clinic. Warm with his patients, yet coolly distant toward the nurses, his behavior fueled her mistrust, until she discovered a lump in her breast -- one that was malignant.
In Jonah, Jacquelyn found an unexpected ally in the fight of her life, though she could sense the secret turmoil behind his thoughtful gaze. When past accusations came back to haunt the handsome Jonah, Jacquelyn must find within herself the strength to heal her doctor's wounds.

Angela Hunt..........2007-03-31
knows how to write a story!! Breast cancer, lost romance, broken hearts and the Lord to bring the healing that is needed. It can't get much better. Two people who need a healing find themselves intertwined in each others lives to a point where if one leaves what will happen to the other?
Difficult but important subject.......2006-12-21
A Time to Mend brings the topic of breast cancer to a place that will hopefully reach a lot of women. It's not what I would have chosen to read about in a romance, but I couldn't stop reading once I'd started the novel. I finished it in two days. Neither does Hunt pull any punches--the heroine of 28 doesn't just get a lumpectomy, she has to undergo a radical mastectomy; her mother died of breast cancer, and now her tumor is of a rapidly growing kind. So, where does a self-sufficient, top oncology nurse go when her own world is falling apart? It takes a lot before she is willing to surrender all to the only One who has the power over life and death.
Along the way, Jackie, the heroine, fights her attraction for her handsome doctor and boss. Their relationship progresses only gradually as both are struggling to maintain a professional distance.
Very emotional, meaningful story. I would like to read more of Hunt's books.
AWESOME!!.......2006-05-23
I am not a big reader, but I could not but this book down! It restores your faith, and gives you a HUGE inspirational push, I definently recommend this book to everyone I know.

the crimes of all Muslims remembered.......2006-03-02
What is the history of non-Muslims under Muslim rulers? Where most Muslim historians stress the cases of tolerance and protection for non-Muslims, Bat Ye'or presents a different story. With patient scholarship she compiles a massive record of abuse, extortion, plunder and segregation of non-Muslim, or "dhimmi" communities. This, she seems to prove, is the real face of Islam toward other faiths -- in the past and in the present.
In the course of this work Ye'or seems bent on detailing every crime ever committed by a Muslim king or Bedouin raider against any Christian or Jew. Of course all crimes should be remembered. But in Ye'or's trial we find no evidence presented for the defense, such as this letter from Rabbi Isaac Sarfatti, writing from Adrianople in Turkey to his fellow rabbis of Germany in about 1454:
"I have heard of the afflictions, more bitter than death, that have befallen our brethren in Germany; of the tyrannical laws, the compulsory baptisms and the banishments, which are of daily occurrence. I am told that when they flee from one place yet a harder fate befalls them in another ... On all sides I learn of of anguish of soul and torment of body; of daily exactions levied by merciless oppressors. The clergy and monks, false priests that they are, rise up against the unhappy people of God. ... Brothers and teachers, friends and acquaintances! I, Isaac Sarfatti ... I proclaim to you that Turkey is a land wherein nothing is lacking, and where, if you will, all will be well with you. ... Is it not better for you to live under Muslims than under Christians? Here every man may dwell at peace under his own vine and fig tree. Here you are allowed to wear the most precious garments. ... And now seeing all these things, O Israel, wherefore sleepest thou? Arise and leave this cursed land forever!" (cited by Stephen Schwartz, The Two Faces of Islam)
Great book, clumsy translation.......2006-01-29
The author's learning, decency, and humanity are obvious, and the story she tells is fascinating (and horrible). (One also should mention her courage.)
Sadly, the translation appears to be the work of someone whose grasp of English idiom is flawed in the extreme. The reader is constantly having to translate the text into English from "English." It's like trying to bicycle on a mountain road covered with big cobbles and the occasional pile of boulders.
an utterly stupid and worthless book.......2005-08-24
[...]
The writer does not understand the plight of Christians in muslim countries or what in practice Dhimmitude involves today as opposed to centuries ago under the turks. She depends on interpretations of texts rather than the life experiences of real people. The experiences of each country under Islam has been very different. Christianity was not destroyed in by Islamic rule in places like Greece or Bulgaria, even though they suffered terribly in all places. Islam cannot destroy christians who stand true.
The purpose of this book and its author is to whip up anti-islamic feelings in the west to a point where a conflict of civiliations becomes a reality. After all, for those who accept her (false) case, the only viable alternative to "save" the west is going to be to eliminate freedom of religion for Muslims. And what an anti-islamic crusade will mean for eastern christians is their total destruction.
Christians in the middle east learned in Iraq that they have no friends in America. The only thing the americans brought were missionaries to convert Christians to american churches. Churches where Christ is ignored, there are no crosses and where their god seems to be the Israeli government.
If you want to read true stories of eastern christianity in english, I would recommend William Dalrymple's From the Holy Mountain.
This Book is a Worthy Investment.......2005-08-09
This book is an eye-opening read into history that I was never exposed to in grade school or even at university, which is shameful, if you ask me. I appreciate the author's use of an extensive bibliography to document everything she reveals. This was not an easy, quick read, but I could not put it down once I started. It is definitely worth investing in to become better informed about European and Islamic accounts of history. It saddens me that what is revealed in this book is being so blatantly ignored on such a large scale in academia and in the media. Any student of history or religion, or anyone who is just curious about the roots and causes of the divide between the West and the Middle East should definitely read this book. You will be better informed and have a balanced view of history. You owe it to yourself to know the truth about what went on (and has been tacitly hidden from you). It will open your eyes to the vast differences between East and West. All of the other positive reviews of this book are true....get it, read it!
Yet another great book by Bat Ye'or.......2005-06-01
The Decline of Eastern Christianity Under Islam: From Jihad to Dhimmitude : Seventh-Twentieth Century is brilliant!!!!

Came at the Right Time.......2006-07-24
When I had decided to become vegetarian some 33 years ago, I had no idea what I was doing and got very sick within a few days. I did not realize how difficult it was to go from meat and potatoes to having veggies be more than a side dish and garnish. A friend who was an Episcopal Priest, Charles Pedersen, recommended the book. After eating a few of the recipes, especially the quiches, I was healthy again and have been able to be consistently and happily vegetarian since then. Although after 8 years of being lacto ovo vegetarian I shifted to becoming vegan, I still remember the book with fondness and am thankful for the healthy and nutritious recipes. I have passed on more than a few copies to others who are starting their vegetarian journey and found others have enjoyed it as well.
Nearly Useless.......2006-05-05
I've owned this cookbook for years. A well-meaning relative gave it to me when I first became a vegetarian 16 years ago, and it's a good thing that I didn't start to try recipes from this book early on, because I would have given up on vegetarianism. There are some decent bread recipes here, but the remainder are almost uniformly terrible. Nutritious, perhaps, but also tasteless without a seeming thought to presentation or texture. This book represents the worst of early vegetarian cooking in America, and I have yet to prepare a single recipe from this book that I found to be truly appetizing, or that I would (heaven forbid) serve to guests. I didn't sell my copy because I wouldn't inflict this sort of thing on an unsuspecting victim - I recycled my copy.
Nutritious and delicious.......2006-03-14
Though one reviewer felt the format of this book was a poor choice, I found it to be perfect. I can leave a spare copy with one of my grocery bags so that I can pick out a new recipe or two while at the grocery store. I find that this lets me find the freshest foods available.
What I like most about this book is that with a little preperation and fore thought, you can do much of your cooking for meals in advance, and just combine ingredients and heat when meal time comes. This can be done because many of the recipes call for "cooked rice" or "cooked peas". I find that this also allows you to use leftovers up quickly, in new recipes.
One note, though, is that this book is not Vegan by any means. Many of the recipes call for dairy products and eggs.
Overall, it is a lovely lovely book and a must for those trying to live lightly on the earth.
My first vegetarian cookbook.......2002-08-18
A friend gave me this book (the spiral edition) in 1973, and it truly changed my life -- I became a vegetarian immediately. This is where I learned how to cook and eat all kinds of food that I'd never seen before, especially beans. I am not crazy about the "breakfast" recipes, but the breads in this cookbook are great. I have over a hundred cookbooks, and I still make the lasagne with adzuki beans (complicated) and the potato soup (easy). Almost every page in my book is either stained or annotated or both.
The only disadvantage to this cookbook is that many recipes call for dairy products and eggs -- things that I still enjoy after 29 years, but that I am not allowed to eat as often these days!
This is a classic, educational cookbook for vegetarians.
Great recipes ... inconvenient packaging.......2001-03-25
This is a great cookbook! The reason I only gave it 4 stars is becaus the cookbook is bound in a regular book format so it is very difficult to place on the counter top or in a recipe hook holder when you cook. The original version was spiral bound which was great! All cookbooks should come spiral bound!!! My two primary cookbooks in the kitchen are this one and More With Less (which incidently is actually spiral bound)!

Book Description

The terrible fact about Francis Ford Coppola's career is that it will always be divided evenly in half, down a line called Apocalypse Now. Before that film is prodigious promise--an Academy Award for writing Patton, two uncannily fine Godfather movies, and the Antonioni-esque smallness of The Conversation. After, there is telescoping debt, talk of reinventing the studios, and multiple, hollow exercises in style. If that's a tough assessment, it's one borne out by this thick, fair biography. The author, Michael Schumacher, who has previously published books on Allen Ginsberg and Eric Clapton, makes much of Coppola's boyhood spell of polio, from which he emerged miraculously healthy and movie-mad. He orchestrated his life thereafter with a consequent mania, as though making up for lost time. While still in film school, he sold screenplays and made Z-budget drive-in movies for Roger Corman. In two years, he wrote 12 scripts for 7 Arts, and in the mid-1960s started a family, made You're a Big Boy Now and Finian's Rainbow, pushed George Lucas to write THX1138, founded American Zoetrope, and took a job, purely for the money, directing The Godfather. The chapters on Apocalypse Now are the book's highlights, and without saying as much they explain the spent quality at the core of Coppola's films in the next two decades. After hurricanes in Manila, Marlon Brando, and the ungodly beauty of those helicopters at dawn, whose career wouldn't wing straight to twilight? --Lyall Bush

Francis Ford Coppola: A Filmmaker’s Life is the first complete picture of the internationally renowned and controversial cinematic genius who directed such films as the Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now, The Conversation, and dozens more -- some wildly successful, some utterly disastrous. He is Hollywood’s perennial outsider, admired and respected for his courage and individualism, but still criticized for being a gambler in a business where success is measured by box-office receipts.
Michael Schumacher tells the entire history of this masterful filmmaker. Coppola reveals for the first time:
* The whole story of his early years, including his “skin flick,” his slasher movie, and his years with Roger Corman.
* The reason behind the most controversial casting decision of his career: putting his daughter, Sofia, in The
Godfather, Part III.
* The impact of the loss of his son, Gio, on his work and his life.
With unprecedented access to Coppola’s friends, critics, peers, casts, and crews, Schumacher creates an irresistible read, showing all the aspects of one of the most complex, conflicted filmmakers of our time.

Francis Ford Coppola: Hollywood Godfather of Creative Genius.......2006-05-31
Francis Ford Coppola was born in a great year for the movies!
In 1939 the director was born to Carmen Coppola and his wife
Italia. His parents were creative-Carmen was a musician in the
Detroit Symphony and later in the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Arturo Toscanini. Carmen would later win a musical
Oscar for the Godfather films.
Francis was a younger son to his older brother who was everything Francis wasn't: handsome and well liked at school.
His sister Talia Shire would later be a movie star in his own
films most notably the Godfather classics.
Coppola graduated from Hofstra and received a master's degree
in film from the UCLA film school. His early apprenticship in
film was under the tutelage of famed B director Roger Corman.
Coppolla emerged from nudie films and small pictures to direct
"Finigan's Rainbow" and began to emerge as a talented maverick
whose creative/artistic wings were flying in the early 1970s.
Despite arduous business and creative troubles he won fame and fortune and several Oscars for the Godfather films. His most
controversial film was "Apocalypse Now" his take on the Vietnam
conflict based on Joseph Conrad's novella "The Heart of Darkness."
Coppola's career has more ups and downs than a roller coaster
as he founded Zoetrope Films in San Francisco and went to the
mat in countless donybrook battles with studio executives.
Coppola reminds me of Orson Welles in that he achieved fame early and then had a difficult career in tinsel town. He is a
man of massive ego; intelligence; daring and creative attention
to the details/minutia of film. He was unfaithful to his wife
Ellie; grieved over a son yet emerges from this biography as a
flawed but good man. He is gregarious and honest and a good
friend. His friendship assisted George Lucas in launching his
storied career! I like Coppola's rich textured films. His screenwriting from Patton to his latest project is outstanding.
This meticulous account of Coppola's career in the Hollywood jungle will not appeal to everyone. Countless pages are devoted to business deals, legal disputes and the difficulties encountered by Coppola in making his films.
For me who loves the Godfather and FFC this is a fine book.
Anyone who seeks to explore this brilliant man's career would do
well to begin with Schumacher's fine biograpy.
Apocalypse When.......2000-04-08
I thought this biography was detailed mostly around this film. On page 262, first paragraph, I think Mr. Coppola would agree to mention the fact that "The Chief Phillips" made a life last attempt to end Willard after getting speared on the boat by Kurtz's mongrules. Overall, the book was a manificant biography of a Itailian-American film maker of our time.
A TOTAL mystery..........2000-02-05
...and I hope he stays that way. Francis Ford Coppola is one of the inspirations of my life. His energy and enthusiasm for what he does outshines even the projects many might deride. One thing you have to say is at LEAST he puts his all into what he does, and I'd imagine no one would doubt this. PS: WHEN is the UNCUT version of "One From the Heart" going to be issued on DVD?
Schumacher got it right.......1999-12-16
I work for Francis Coppola today and know him pretty well. Michael Schumacher's book really captures the spirit and energy of this facinating and complex man. I have read most of the other Coppola books and none combines an understanding for both the human and artistic side of Francis.
This book, like no other I have read, reflects the passion, energy and chaos of the Coppola world. I can tell you from the inside there is no more exciting experience than being part of the Coppola energy. Francis loves to tackle the "impossible" and never gives up. I particularly like this book because it is clear that the author, like myself, has great respect for this whirlwind of a man.
