Set against a backdrop of prodemocracy unrest in contemporary Katmandu, The Guru of Love tells the story of a lowly tutor who ends up in a most irregular domestic ménage. Ramchandra lives in a shabby apartment house with his well-born wife and their children. He doesn't plan on becoming a cad, but when a beautiful young single mother named Malati becomes his student, he's drawn into a relationship with her. A powerful ambivalence marks his romance with the girl: "He had an urge to walk toward Tangal, knock on Malati's door, and tell her not to come to his house anymore, that he could no longer tutor her. Or perhaps crawl into bed next to her." When Ramchandra's wife Goma finds out about the affair, she has a unique solution--she asks Malati and her baby daughter to move into their apartment. Goma sleeps with the children and instructs the adulterous couple to share the master bedroom. She insists,: "Why don't you two go inside the bedroom, and I'll bring you some food." This license sits uneasily upon Ramchandra, much as democratic liberation sits uneasily upon the old city of Katmandu. The Guru of Love is ultimately a sweet, sad look at an indestructible family. It also gives us, in Ramchandra's wife Goma, a surprising, cunning, and altogether charming heroine. --Claire Dederer

Book Description

From the acclaimed author of Arresting God in Kathmandu, The Guru of Love is the engrossing story of a fevered love triangle set in contemporary Nepal. Ramchandra, a quiet math teacher, reluctantly enters into an adulterous relationship, and soon his double lives disastrously converge. When Goma, his wife by arranged marriage, learns of his affair, she demands that his mistress move into their small quarters. Unable to dissuade her, Ramchandra finds his desires and fears living side by side. Goma proves to be far shrewder than she seems, entering into a surprising alliance with his mistress. And Ramchandra finds himself trapped -- both in his house and in his city, Kathmandu, a crowded place where secrets are impossible to keep and family matters dictate. Ultimately, his only escape is to let go of someone he loves. Absorbing, sexy, and psychologically acute, The Guru of Love radiates compassion and rare insight.

3 out of 5 stars lots of local Nepali details.......2007-07-26

I think the real "guru" of love is Goma (wife of the main actor), not Ramchandra (the main actor) as suggested by his daughter in the story. Really, how would a married woman invite her husband's mistress back to their matrimonial home and let them have the master bedrm, so that they can do whatever they like in the rm, while she sleeps next door with the 2 children? But anyway, this is not the focus of the story. The story is really about a forty-ish Nepali man getting lost of himself and then back to normal, and the author tries to throw in local Nepali details, eg poverty, the importance people place on money & "face"-preservation, their belief in gods (and there're many in Hindu). The book is written in simple English & easy to read, I finished it in 3 days.

5 out of 5 stars Age old story told with refreshing style.......2007-05-20

I love this book. The author gives us a very intimate look at an old story. Set in Nepal, we realize that all people are the same no matter where they live or what their religious practice or profession.
The main character is a man, his family and his mistress, nothing new huh? However, the wife is very clever in her handling this news. His wife doesn't react in typical fashion, after her initial abandonment "running home to mom" to sulk, she takes a very unique approach to the matter. She gives her husband what he wants. She invites his mistress to move in with the family and sleep in her bed! The consequences for each person is a surprise to each but the wife, who is steadfast endures the gossip, embarassment and humiliation with graciousness.
Truly our main character realizes his mistake, is he to far gone for redemption?
This author, a native of Nepal, has amazing talent. Now a professor at a University in N. America, I would love to sit at his feet and learn from him. His skill is to be studied and embraced.
I can't wait for his next book.

4 out of 5 stars Good and Fast Read.......2005-12-23

Reading this book after Kite Runner was sure easy. There are no tragic deaths or complicated plots.
This book focuses on the life of a math teacher in Kathmandu. He gets bored with his life and how his in-laws constantly put him down, so he finds a woman to keep him entertained and I assume take his mind off of feeling like a loser.
What he doesn't realize (and he should) is how much he does have.
This book can be a roller coaster ride and never gives anything away until it has to.

4 out of 5 stars A prose on Dr. Atkin's diet, lean, trim, light and fit.......2004-09-11

If Truman Capote's classic novel Breakfast at Tiffany's is a glittering crystal palace furnished with ornate, regal, gilded Victorian furniture and bright oriental carpets, Samrat Upadhyay's The Guru of Love is a thatched, two room mountain cabin furnished with wooden Shaker furniture. Each structure has a charm of its own, of course. In a prose so relentlessly spare and light that it reads like it is on a no sugar, very low fat and low calorie diet, Samrat Upadhyay tells the story of Ramachandra, a poor mathematics teacher at Kantipur school in Kathmandu, Nepal. The government school is "housed in a crumbling building in a alley where stray dogs quarreled and garbage accumulated". He falls in love with a teen aged student named Malati, and has an affair with her. Malati is an unwed mother, with a daughter named Rachana. When Ramachandra's wife, Goma, learns about his affair with the student, she leaves him and moves to her parent's house, "Pandey Palace". It is a palace that belonged to the Rana family long ago, a residence which Mr. Pandey inherited from his grandfather. Ramachandra and Goma reconcile, however, and Goma returns to her house on one condition that Ramachandra invite Malati and her daughter to live with them. From this point on the novel reads like an ideal but predictable story written for a Hindi film produced at Bollywood. Malati's lover Amrit, who had deserted her when he found out that she was pregnant, returns to Kathmandu. He drives a taxi to earn a living. The lovers unite and eventually marry even. The book holds the reader's attention, however, from the beginning. The story, though predictable, is realistic and at times quite charming, too. The author's prose is plain, simple and uncluttered. A good debut novel.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Setting.......2004-04-01

Despite an uncreative plot, Upadhyay's "The Guru of Love" is an enjoyable book. The story centers around a married character named Ramchandra who finds himself attracted to one of his young math students named Malati. Ramchandra's wife Goma senses the attraction and she tries to teach her husband a lesson by letting Malati move in with their family and sleep in Ramchandra's bed. Unsurprisingly, Ramchandra struggles with his physical desire for Malati and his emotional desire for his wife. Unless the reader has never seen a soap opera or is too young to recall Bill and Hillary Clinton's marital saga, he or she or she will conclude early on that Goma stands by her man.

This novel is notable not for the boring love triangle but for its descriptions of Kathmandu and the many Hindu holidays and festivals that the family celebrates. The reader is transported to a city where an extramarital seduction in a temple means having monkeys wander in on the scene to watch Ramchandra and Malati consumate their desire for one another. There are also a number of descriptions of Hindu religious practices which include animal sacrifices, prayers to goddesses, and funeral services. Most interesting are the descriptions of modern Kathmandu as Ramchandra tries to adjust to his life in an overcrowded city that is on the brink of a political revolution.

You won't walk away from this novel having learned ancient Nepali love techniques like the title implies, but you will have been transported to another culture and it may leave you feeling so intrigued you find yourself planning a vacation to this region of the world. Overall, this is a very quick read and I believe that many people will enjoy this novel if they look deeper than the basic plotline.

2 out of 5 stars Will give you frown lines...........2007-04-04

OK, this is a OLD story by Linda Howards ( nothing at all like her more recent books), nevertheless, its STILL one of the MOST annoying love stories out there. If you can take 250pgs worth of seeing a weak, spineless goodie-goodie heroine getting walked all over for the sake of " showing what love is all about to the man who abuses me in every way" , then DO read this.

Hero walks into town to get revenge from his family after years of being away. Heroine sees hero, she falls for him, he abuses her constantly, but she cant help falling in love, the MORE abusive/spiteful he gets the MORE she loves him... Hero back stabs her and her family, she falls into bed because she LOVES him, and MUST show him she loves him... riiiight...... *rolls eyes*

Ahem, so this is what this book is like.....truthfully, is THIS is a romance novel?

Back cover reads:
A battle of wills
Wealthy, powerful, proud and arrogant, the Mississippi Blackstone put family above all else. But those bonds are tested when black sheep Cord Blackstone returns for a long-overdue showdown against the family who robbed him of his birthright.
A blaze of passion
Susan Blackstone married into the powerful family, a woman who had loved and then lost the Blackstones' favorite son. But Susan held her own, running a business empire and winning the affection and support of her dead husband's family. Now she must choose between loyalty...and emotions that cut her to the heart, between her husband's memory...and Cord, a reckless interloper wreaking havoc with the town, the family and her very soul.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-07-28

I really love all of Howard's most recent works, and many of her earlier works as well ("White Lies," "Diamond Bay," "Midnight Rainbow," even "Against the Rules"). This, however is not one of the ones I like.

Howard has always written about very Alpha Male heroes. In some of her earlier work, including this one, she takes that portrayal to an extreme. The "hero" in this work seems lacking in emotion and even leaning towards the emotionally abusive.

The "heroine," on the other hand, is written as an emotional wimp. It's written that she's "strong," but she lets the "hero" walk all over her, making herself totally emotionally available to a man who, quite frankly, seems unworthy of it.

I love most of Howard's work, but this is not a book I'm going to keep in my personal collection.

3 out of 5 stars A little lacking but okay.......2001-05-21

You have to remember that this book is one of Linda Howards earlier works and she was just staring out. The story does lack drama. But the main characters hold your attention. The plot is predictable. It's a good book to read on lazy afternoon. I think you will like it. P.S. Linda Howard other books are fantastic, she really grew into her work. Read all her books old and new ones if you want really great books.

1 out of 5 stars NOT SO GOOD, BUT AN EARLY BEGINNER EFFORT.......2001-04-04

I have read many of Linda Howard's books. This one was a major disappointment. I almost did not finish it. It was awkwardly written. But then I realized that Ms. Howard was still in early stages of novel writing. This book was written in 1985 and boy, what a difference 12 years has made. I say 12 because I refer to "Son of the Morning" which was written by Ms. Howard in 1997 and was one of best books I have ever read. So don't judge Linda Howard by this book. You have lots of treats ahead if you stick with the later-written books.

          3 out of 5 stars A step down.......2005-12-15

I'm afraid that I was not as enthusiastic about this book as the other reviewers. I liked For Love of Mother-Not. There was lots of action and some mystery that wasn't fully resolved at the end. For the most part, this book is not a continuation of the issues in Mother-Not. Mother Mastiff plays a small role at the beginning of the book and is then left behind. I don't know if this means that she's bowing out of the series because I'm reading it in order. I thought she was a good character, however, so I hope she makes her way back in. There was also very little new information on the backgrounds of Pip or Flinx. Maybe it won't be possible to do more with Pip's background, but it seems like there could be more there. The culmination of this book gave a hint of a possible future book on Flinx's background, but not much more. I like action, and there was surprisingly little of it here. It was almost like a transition building up to a later book, but the transition itself was kind of disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Still reading it after all these years........2005-11-07

The Tar-Aiym Krang was, I believe, the first proper speculative fiction book that I ever read. I bought it used at a sale held by the local library. It set me on the path of a life-long love affair with the character of Flinx and the Commonwealth-- books that I still enjoy to this very day.

Although chronologically The Tar-Aiym Krang is the second in the series, it was actually the first novel that Foster ever had published. It is the real introduction to the character of Flinx and his pet snake Pip. The book does an excellent job of introducing us to both, as well as setting up the Commonwealth and its respective species for further exploration.

Unlike the Spellsinger series, which I enjoyed at the time but now experience as a kind of guilty pleasure, the Commonwealth novels have aged very well. The races and their roles are well-constructed and the character very well-rounded inhabitants in them.

Potential new readers to the series can either start here or For the Love of Mother-Not-- either will do as an introduction.

5 out of 5 stars Tar-Aiym Krang was his first novel I think.......2003-12-29

Tar-Aiym Krang was his first novel I think; I know he wrote Love of Mother Not later. Fine ideas, my favorite theme for science fiction (main character confused with unknown and possibly unlimited power).

They are definately ordered, otherwise it's a little confusing if you care about the details.

5 out of 5 stars A marvelous long running series !.......2003-09-18

"The Tar-Aiym Krang" is the second book in the enchanting Flinx and Pip series. Readers should start with "For Love of Mother-not" which prompted me to purchase the rest of the Pip and Flinx books printed to-date. Not all are in print and I was glad to have secured those out-of-print through Amazon Market place. I have read the first 4 and have enjoyed each of them. Flinx and his pet,Pip, are definitely my top favorite sci-fi/fantasy characters. The adventures of this young man with his flying mini-dragon keeps me enthralled. Their encounters with myriad alien characters in highly imaginative worlds is wonderfully conceived. I am just glad that Foster is still keeping the series alive.

          2 out of 5 stars why I won't be reading the sequels.......2002-08-11

Judging by the other reviews here I'm clearly missing something.

I came to this book expecting an easy to read Sci-Fi pulp story, hopefully entertaining, at best uplifting. I almost got what I was expecting, but not quite.

To it's credit, it held my interest enough to actually finish it, and the internal logic and scientific concept was consistant and well-thought out enough to be believable. That's about the most positive thing I can find to say about it.

As I began to read I was so stricken with the clumsiness of the dialogue and the two dimensional gimmickry of the characterisation that I assumed this must be a very brave (and lucky to be published) first novel. Not sure if that's the case, but my hopes that there might be a powerful or clever twist that had contributed to it's acceptance by the Publishing House were sadly not to be realised.

There is a sense throughout that it might all be worth it, but the ending is so weak as to leave me resenting the time spent ploughing through the final chapters, misprints and all. I was amazed to find on completion that the author has gone on to pen a whole series based on the characters found in this book, each of which can be reduced to one 'interesting' personality trait.

It is littered with the sort of literary rule-breaking that requires an artist of much greater stature than this for justification. For instance, I accept that his use of dialogue so clumsy as to be (literally) sometimes in fictional alien tongues was an attempt to give his conceptual hybrid human/alien language an exotic feel... unfortunately it succeeded, in my case, only to irritate.

Probably the most interesting character is introduced in detail early in the story, only to play no further role. The Sci-Fi cliches come thick and fast.

A strong ending could, perhaps, have excused the weakness of the prose, but this, unfortunately, was simply not forthcoming.

I don't normally find it useful to contribute such negative reviews, but amidst the shining praise found here, I really felt there needed to be at least one dissenting voice to warn to potential first time reader.

5 out of 5 stars Do you hear what I hear?.......2004-09-04

This book is part of a four-volume series of homiletical (preaching) resources designed to aid those who preach understand more about the way their sermons are heard and understood. A team of noted scholars in the field of homiletics from several divinity schools and seminaries (including my own) worked together on this volume, and through sponsorship of the Lilly Endowment, brought together a diverse group of people from 28 area congregations to be part of the study. The purpose of this study, this volume and the others forthcoming, could be formed out of the statement in the preface to this volume, which the scholar team said to the congregation members -- 'Teach us how you listen to sermons so that we can help ministers become more effective preachers.'

This volume looks in detail at six particular interviews in that process, adopting a case study approach, five individuals and one small group of another five persons. These were selected as part of the overall group representative of many levels of diversity, along gender, racial, and geographic location lines. After describing briefly some procedural matters in the first chapter, the writers for this volume each took one chapter with an individual, or in Ron Allen's case in the final of these chapters, with the small group. The pattern for each chapter is the same -- a brief introduction of the person or group, some basic demographics about the church and community, and then a transcript of the interview itself. The interview transcript is set in double-column format with interview observations and links to the overall questions and themes throughout. Finally, each interview ends with a brief analysis of the Listening for Preaching, Listening for Theology, and the particular challenges brought out by the experiences of that individual's response.

After the interview sections, there are two chapters and an epilogue that discuss important issues -- chapter 8 looks at particular insights arising out of these experiences, which range from realisations of the importance of the community context to understanding that the several-thousand-year-old rhetoric ideas of Aristotle still ring true in many ways. Particularly with the small group session, but also in the individual interviews, the idea of the importance of community rises over and over.

The authors present a chapter on approaches to interviewing congregations -- perhaps this is a warning label type of chapter, 'kids, don't try this at home'. It is no simple matter to take a list of questions and begin asking people in a congregation, and the minister who would do this on her or his own is likely to end up creating unexpected problems. However, there are things that ministers can and should do to get in touch with their congregations, recognising that there is no normative or standard congregation against which their would be measured; the epilogue continues this idea with 'a confirmation, a caution and a call'. The caution is in the application of this study to any particular case. The confirmation is that preaching is central of community; the call is for ministers to work in humility with their communities.

There are several appendices in the book -- one of unannotated transcripts from two interviews, one of sample questions interviews can be with in this kind of process, and a final appendix that includes a more formal description of the Listening project.

It is obvious from the transcripts that the interviews were conducted with care and sensitivity to the individuals as well as the issues involved; sometimes events over-ride other plans, as Ron Allen described in his chapter, an interview with a small group conducted just a month after the 9-11 terrorist attacks. The scholars also draw on their experience and study (for example, Dan Moseley comments that his interviewee, Jane, fits well into the model of Tex Sample's idea of ministry in an oral culture).

There is much here, and together with the forthcoming volumes, this promises to be a significant study of congregational life and listening, making the attentive preacher all the more qualified and capable at delivering what both God and the community hope.

I have a niece who was turning 8 and I really had no ideas for a birthday gift for her. I purchased this book for her and it was her favorite present. She can make many of the recipes by herself and the rest she is learning to do with the help of her mother...or me! What a great gift idea!

This book covers the production of fine jewelry in the Newark, NJ area. A good variety of pieces are beautifully photographed. More importantly, the various US makers are indentified and discussed. A work of this type is essential before all record is lost of the unique contribution of these very fine and, until now, overlooked jewelers. The book is a revelation. Highly recommended. There is alot more to American jewelry than Tiffany's. Explore this unique heritage most of us didn't even know we had.

Mrs. Jennings does a fine job of helping the reader confront their fear of color/change. She's obviously got years under her belt of hearing the same explanation for 'WHITE' walls over & over that this book screams at you to..."Break Free" from white walls. About a yr prior to reading this...I had started to do so myself...what a breath of fresh air...to slowly be ridding my home..room by room from the sterile, clinical, boring background of white.

Mrs. Jenning spends most of the book dealing with the color issue...& weaved in between are many decorating basics that can certainly get readers going in the right direction.
My only annoyance with the book..sprinkled here & there...were odd comments like "the answers are within you" type jargon. This may sell books...but the fact of the matter is....fluff like this helps no one...if the answers were already 'within'...we wouldn't need the help of any books ...including Mrs. Jennings'.

For the most part...I really enjoyed it...especially liked the process she went through of dispelling the 9 'myths'.

She's got great taste too...as is demonstrated in her Canadian home...her US home was not quite my style...(Yikes)...but to each his own. She's a real family/friendly designer too...& that really comes across...which is so often lacking in many 'I only exist for photographs' design books that are always in circulation.

                                  Good book...good information...pictures are inspirational!

Still don't know your colors? Get this book. Lynette Jennings does THE best job of helping the reader choose a color scheme. She walks you through an easy, step-by-step process that is so painless, you'll wonder why everyone doesn't know it. Her coverage of related topics in this book are also well done.

This book is worth buying and keeping.

This is one of my favorite decorating books for two reasons. First, Ms. Jennings is forthright on the importance of arranging your house to suit your lifestyle and provides entertaining examples with nice, big photos. Second, her discussion of color schemes is truly outstanding in its simplicity and thoroughness (and nowhere does she ask the reader to understand tertiary colors). The only flaw, to my mind, is that she mentions regional color schemes based on the local earth, then never provides the full palettes.

5 out of 5 stars Why can't other designers teach the way she can?.......2003-05-05

I am an almost pathologically non-visual person who simply can't think outside the box when it comes to shapes, colors, or design or decorating of any kind. It didn't take me long to find that among all the home decorating and craft shows on TV, Lynette Jennings produced by far the most helpful and instructive show for brain-dead people like me.

What DID take me awhile to realize, however, is WHY she is so much better than the others. She approaches each topic just as if she were an instructor in a real-life classroom, albeit with the benefit of being physically placed in beautiful homes and rooms that she can display to the viewer. As a teacher myself, I looked at her with a sort of professional eye, and realized that she was in fact a superbly talented teacher and communicator.

Her book is more of the same outstanding material you get on her show, but this time organized according to various themes, such as how to use color, how to decorate in small spaces, etc. The book is gorgeously illustrated, and includes concrete ideas that can be understood by those of us who lack her instinctive talent for the subjects of decorating and design. Highly recommended!

Our special today is a tasty treat called May I Take Your Order? Brimming with classic restaurant menus from the roaring '20s through the fabulous '50s, May I Take Your Order? is the first book to feature this hot new collectible and design resource with hundreds of color reproductions. Author Jim Heimann showcases 250 original menus from all kinds of restaurants, including roadside diners à la Route 66, theme restaurants (travel, Western-style, celebrity eateries), five-star restaurants, nightclubs, bars, and cafés. With menus and vintage photographs from some of the greatest dining establishments of the era, this survey of a popular artform offers an uncommon perspective on design in the early half of the century -- as well as a glimpse of prices and culinary preferences of yesteryear. From the elegance of Art Nouveau to playful Art Deco designs to the ultra-modernism of the late Ô50s, this is an exciting new y'nd for artists, designers, and restaurateurs looking for ideas and inspiration.

As a designer, I consider this a must-have as a visual reference, though incomplete because of it's general lack of interior art. I suspect the cover art is prevalent because of it's appeal to collectors. Well-designed presentation by Jim Heimann. Glad to have it, but I want to see more.

As the author of "Restaurant China, Identification & Value Guide for Restaurant, Airline, Ship & Railroad Dinnerware, Volume 1 and Volume 2," I was delighted when I received this excellent historical resource. The 1000+ priceless photographs, along with difficult to document dates and locations are most appreciated. In addition, it is a pleasure to simply page through Jim Heimann's books and imagine life as it was in days gone by.

I thought the book was great, but I was hoping it would show more of menu interiors rather than the covers/exteriors. While folks can show you excerpts from text...it's a bit harder when you are buying a book for the images.

                                      Book Description

The memoirs of the great Greek shadow puppeteer and his history of the art of Karagiosis. His father was blinded by a stone falling on him while he was working as a laborer on the Acropolis. His mother took in washing. After the accident he led his father out begging during the days. At night he sneaked off to the shadow theater which was thought unrespectable. Karagiosis became his great passion. He worked first as a puppeteer's assistant and was able to start on his own when a neighbor gave him a sheet. This he made into a screen which he slept beside outdoors at night so that it would not be stolen. He made his own puppets, scenery, signs, wrote his own plays and performed them with the help of a singer. Memoirs describes his beginnings, the 1914-18 war, the coffee houses all over Greece where he performed and became famous, World War II and the German Occupation. History and Art of Karagiosis tells the main schools of shadow puppetry, the best known puppeteers! -- 'Antonis Poriotis. A good player but he died of too much wine in 1938. It gives the main karagiosis characters and lists the best-known plays. The book is illustrated with Spatharis' own shadow figures.
