Book Description
Jorge Luis Borges declared The Invention of Morel a masterpiece of plotting, comparable to The Turn of The Screw and Journey to the Center of the Earth. Set on a mysterious island, Bioy's novella is a story of suspense and exploration, as well as a wonderfully unlikely romance, in which every detail is at once crystal clear and deeply mysterious.
Inspired by Bioy Casares's fascination with the movie star Louise Brooks, The Invention of Morel has gone on to live a secret life of its own. Greatly admired by Julio Cortázar, Gabriel García Márquez, and Octavio Paz, the novella helped to usher in Latin American fiction's now famous postwar boom. As the model for Alain Resnais and Alain Robbe-Grillet's Last Year in Marienbad, it also changed the history of film.

Excellent read!.......2006-04-25
If you want something to think about, how do you really feel about immortality?
A great recommendation........2006-03-28
I am a big fan of the short stories by Jorge Luis Borges. As such, Amazon kept suggesting I would enjoy this book by Casares. From time to time Amazon's system can really make annoying recommendations (I like Hamlet, so for a month, I had 300 plays by Shakespeare on my recommended page).
At first glance I thought this was a simple, he-likes-Spanish-language-authors-so-lets-recommend-another recommendation. But the similarity goes deeper. If you like Borges, I believe you will find that this books shares a similar ethos. There is a haunting quality to the protagonist's lonliness and longing.
So if you like Borges, I think you will be pleasantly surprised by Adolfo Bioy Casares and THE INVENTION OF MOREL.
Amazing Amazon information.......2005-11-01
Concordances, funny phrases, surprise pages but:
The illustrator is not Levine.
The illustrator is Borges de Torre.
Levine is the author of the Introduction.
One would expect that booksellers and book reviewers can read and write... However, some reviews found in the web claim, incorrectly, that Levine is either the translator or that she revised Simms's translation. Others list the author as Casares rather than as Bioy Casares. Sure ABC is laughing while rolling in his tomb: notice his parents humour in naming him Adolf so his initials would be ABC, as known to his friends. What better for a writer?
Scifi novel of ideas.......2005-01-01
Praised by many writers, this is a novel akin to films like "The Outsiders" or "The Sixth Sense" in that it centers around a fantastic explanation for the odd happenings over the course of the story. The explanation is so verbose and unnecessarily detailed for the function of plot alone that it purposefully strays into philosophy and how we perceive the world and interact with others. Insightful aphorisms dot the narration. The major fault I find with novels of this sort (and I believe many of the European writers are kin, like Kundera and Calvino) is that they fail to tie their mechanical plot symmetries to lifelike characters. Instead their characters talk in robotlike voices, vaguely imitating real people without the unique inflections of lifelike individuals. These authors have the imagination but not the mimetic skill to make fiction come to life. So reading them is like watching a puppet play, interesting for the plot convolutions but ultimately emotionally detached.
Some Great Ideas Poorly Executed.......2004-07-30
As in H.G. Well's The Island of Dr. Moreau, a man finds himself on an island not as abandoned as it looks - a scientist has been at work on this island as well. A thought provoking work falling somewhere between science fiction and magic realism, The Invention of Morel tackles our image based culture and our obsessions with figures who we repeatedly see, but never know. Can something of the soul be captured on film? Can we lose our souls through devotion to an image? Does the eternal now of a captured moment bestow immortality? And how real is that captured moment anyway? All good stuff this; however, this book at times also greatly disappoints. Despite its brevity, it is prone to dragging and on occasion is too obvious to master the suspense which Bioy Casares has attempted to create. Bioy Casares' technique (original in 1940 and highly praised by Borges in the volume's prologue) has been made disappointingly obvious to a new generation of readers raised on such programs as the Twilight Zone and who are more than familiar with meta-worlds and technologically created simulacrum. The novel greatly improves when these devices are dispensed. The criminal madness and paranoia of the novel's narrator also creates the unfortunate effect of either discounting his observations and insights or, if accepted, implicating the reader as a fellow paranoid fugitive trapped in a world of empty images. Yes, we may be trapped in such a world, but we are hardly as histrionic about it.

A journey in the possibilities of a modern-day man's psyche........1999-10-12
Attached to this story since I first read it in high school, I consider this book the most romantic story ever written, of a man who falls in love with the past, a fantasy and its ever-after legacy! It is easy and quick to read for younger minds. It will beat any other fiction "short" story for its philosophical pondering about our temporal existence and the legacy of an invention. Definitely, "La Invension de Morel" is another jewel of Hispanic American writing yet to be discovered by the masses!
this stories combine the reality and the fantastic world.......1999-03-15
with an unsuperable style. By the way, I'd like you to correct:Jorge Luis Borges is not a designer;he is one of the most important writers of the history of Argentina, and maybe of the world.
the book with gimmick of such novelty.......1998-11-09
This is my first time to read a book by an Argentinean novelist. The story is very interesting and it is almost incredible that the book with gimmick of such novelty was written more than a half century ago. You would not find it old-fashioned even today. Recommendable not only for sci-fi fans but also for readers who want to seek the meaning of "living real." The story is so short that you can read it within 4 hours or so.
Great Fiction........1998-06-22
The story and the language have a very special beauty resulting from its simplicity and imagination. Note: the original title is The Invention of "Morel", not Moral (La invención de Morel). I think it is in allusion to "The Island of Dr. Moreau" by H.G. Wells.

Book Description
Beloved on both sides of the Atlantic, bestselling Irish writer Maeve Binchy has been acclaimed by critics and readers alike for her heartwarming, beautifully crafted takes celebrating Ireland, its people, and the journey of life itself. Now three of her finest, most memorable works have been brought together for the first time in an outstanding collection that shines with the luminescent storytelling that has earned the author international renown.
THE LILAC BUS
Featuring two novellas, The Lilac Bus and Dublin 4, this national bestseller showcases Binchy's talents at their finest. In The Lilac Bus, Binchy masterfully and poignantly interweaves the lives and fates of eight very different individuals who travel from Dublin to the Irish country town of Rathdoon every Friday night in a lilac-colored minibus. In Dublin 4, a quartet of stories vividly portrays the quiet desperation and everyday heroism of ordinary people living ordinary lives in contemporary Ireland.
FIREFLY SUMMER
When American millionaire Patrick O'Neill comes to Mountfern in the fateful summer of 1962 to convert a dilapidated manor house into a luxury hotel, his intrusion turns life in the small Irish village upside down. The ensuing conflict between new money and old traditions, which strains families and friendships to the breaking point, is brilliantly explored in this truly unforgettable family drama that will live in your heart long after the last page is turned.
SILVER WEDDING
Guilty secrets from the past and plaguing fears in the present surface when sons and daughters, sisters and brothers, and friends and lovers reunite to celebrate Desmond and Deirdre Doyle's twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Among the difficulties the Doyles must come to terms with: the daughter struggling to become a nun, the son who prefers the dreary farm in Ireland to life in London, and the enviable successes of their best man and bridesmaid.

Stories of Ireland.......2007-04-05
Binchy clearly loves her homeland of Ireland, and readers will too. This collection of three novels gets an A+!
Three Complete Books ~ Maeve Binchy.......2007-01-04
Maeve Binchy is one of the best authors I have read. I love the fact that she is Irish and writes stories of Ireland. The slow pace makes reading a pleasure. I liked all three books in this, but particularly liked FIREFLY SUMMER. Hopefully, she will have another book on the market soonest.
The lilac bus, firefly summer, silver wedding.......2006-08-17
I was very disappointed with this book. I have read a few of Maeve Binchy's books and loved them. I couldn't put them down. However all the stories in this book just leave you unfulfilled for an ending. I expected 3 complete stories and was very disappointed.
Good Gift.......2005-10-21
The publishers get an A+ for putting these books together. I have always read her books as soon as they come out. Now I will buying this as an excellent give for others, so handy for the holidays!
A great collection of stories.......2002-10-08
I liked Maeve Binchy before, but I am even more of a fan after buying this set. Unfortunately because I am such a busy person this book took me just over a year to finish! But I loved every page and would definitely give it a re-read.
The three novels in this book are all distinctly different and, in my view, each deserve their own little mini-review:
THE LILAC BUS - Since I read this a year ago, the finer details are lost on me. But I did like how this novel focuses on so many characters and yet you get to feel like you know each one. And I loved how each character viewed each scene differently. You read one chapter and you see one person's point of view, and then you read the next and you get completely different thoughts on the situation. Only Ms. Binchy could keep tabs on so many characters so skillfully. And all I can say about DUBLIN FOUR is that I had to flip through it a little to remember what it was even about, so obviously it's not as stellar as its counterpart. 4 stars total.
FIREFLY SUMMER - A great book all around. It's easily the longest story of the three (it's almost 500 pages, compared to 200 for The Lilac Bus and 150 for Silver Wedding) but once you get going, you don't even notice the book's length. The characters are so genuine, and you are upset to see them go at the end. The main plot is very thick, and yet you enjoy reading all the little sub-plots that go along with it. I actually cried reading some parts of this book! The book ends as you hope it will but not in the manner that you expect! So will Patrick's hotel succeed? You'll just have to read it and find out! 5 stars.
SILVER WEDDING - is the freshest in my mind because I just finished it. It is similar to The Lilac Bus in that it devotes each chapter to a character. But while The Lilac Bus follows the characters through the same moments of time, each chapter in Silver Wedding is a distinct moment. For instance, when you read about Anna (chapter 1) it is months before the anniversary, but when you read about Deirdre (chapter 8), it's a few weeks before. The more you read, the more you find out about the wedding itself and the people involved. However, I found that although there were plenty of sub-plots to keep the story going, the main plot was not very well developed or interesting (ok, so they're having a party, and Deirdre's the only one who's truly excited... you almost get that from page one, why keep going?). And the characters themselves aren't as "3-dimensional" as they are in Ms. Binchy's other stories. I really expected more, but it still wasn't a waste of time. 3 stars.

Customer Reviews:
Just buy it already........2007-04-17
If you've read the first 4 books of The New Sun series and enjoyed them, just buy this book right now. There's no point in reading a review, or spoilers or anything else, positive or negative. Just buy it and read it.
After you finish, you'll probably be intrigued enough at some of the hidden meanings to re-read the first 4 books in the series. In fact, the last 4 times I've re-read the series, I started with this book first as it lends itself well to being both the first and last book, because Severian's adventure is somewhat cyclical, like Finnegans Wake or what Giambattista Vico would deem a 'storia ideale eterna'.
Questions Answered, but New Ones Arise.......2007-02-09
The Urth of the New Sun: The sequel to 'The Book of the New Sun' (New Sun) isn't so much a book as a lengthy pontification on the nature of man. As compared to other beings, Severian, tells the reader his philosophies as if they are to become volumes in his gospel (which is what we are supposed to believe.)
This is told via travelogue, where we find out where Severian has gone, what he's done, but not why. He spends much of his time trying to work through the largest of all Why questions, without resolving that satisfactorily.
But, at the end of the book, Gene Wolfe stops writing. We never find out the answers to Severian's questions because it seems that the author tired of the internal socratic dialogue, realizing that others tried before and also didn't come up with definitive conclusions.
All that said, Wolfe is still a talented writer, and even with flaws the volume is worth a read. I didn't throw it in frustration, but instead I savored the words and only became perplexed after days pondering the plot and realizing that those errors came through retrospectively.
Enjoy it, and the whole series.
- CV Rick
Answers more than it entertains.......2006-11-11
The Urth of the New Sun is a coda to the Book of the New Sun, so going into it one has to expect a few things:
1) A story that builds heavily on what has gone before- this book is not for newcomers to this world! Read New Sun first.
2) Uncomplicated plots- this book is about half a story. Don't set your expectations too high.
However, if you can look at Urth of the New Sun getting past these first two hurdles, this book is the key that unlocks the secrets of the Book of the New Sun. Insight is provided on many questions left unanswered in the original tetralogy, and especially we learn a lot about Severian's character.
This isn't quite the Severian of New Sun, but it's still someone who has grown from there; still questionably insane, still the product of his society. Some more information is provided on the world.
All in all, the book is enjoyable, especially if you feel like you missed some major element of the Book of the New Sun. Urth of the New Sun isn't an incredible read, but it definitely filled me with some flashes of insight that made it well worth reading.
the essential ending of the story- a must........2006-07-15
This book clarifies most of the mysteries surrounding the New Sun series, while tantalizing us with a classic open-ended and somewhat cryptic Wolfean ending, very much in the spirit of the work. A colossal masterpiece.
Wolfe gets himself far out on a limb for this sequel yet he is able to deal beautifully with the deepest philosophical and spiritual questions,
This is a work so far beyond the genre of 'fantasy fiction' that it is really ludicrous to speak of it as anything but great literature. In a tale of weighty concerns, the leavening humor of Wolfe deals with those sci-fi tropes by turning them completely inside out. Certainly the Nerw Sun series is the Book Of Gold, and explicates the Christian Ethos in the same way that Tolkien's great work Lord Of the Rings explicated the English Civilization.
Worth reading........2005-05-20
If you enjoyed the four volumes of "The Book of the New Sun," I would suggest picking this up. Severian picks up where he left off at the end of "Citadel of the Autarch," and much of what made those books good is in here. The problem, and the reason I don't give this 5 stars, is that I found a lot of the story predictable. I hope I am not being to vague here, because I don't want to post spoilers, but if you paid close attention when reading "The Book of the New Sun," it shouldn't be too hard to see where this one is going before you're halfway done with it. Still, overall I must say that it was an enjoyable read, Wolfe still uses the language beautifully, and you get to meet even more strange characters. Just don't set your expectations quite as high as the first four books in the "New Sun" series.

Brilliant depiction of group dynamics.......2006-04-09
Another of my favorites. Has been out of print for awhile and am glad to see it back. Carmen Berry depicts a brilliant example of group dynamics and personality styles. Gives you permission to set your own boundaries.
A very useful book.......2004-09-08
Goes over the problem in detail, but without excessive hand-wringing. A diversity of well selected examples, with helpful discussions and observations. If codependence and "rescuing" people are issues you struggle with, definitely get this book!

Gifts in a Jar.. One Dish Meals.......2007-07-21
Bought this for my daughter. She works long hours, six days a week, so coming homr to fix a meal that's mostly prepared (and SHE knows what the ingredients are) is very time saving for her. They have allergies and has to choose her ingredients carefully.
Good gift book, few recipes.......2003-01-28
I have most of the books in this series. My parents are aging and I have been looking for items that I can make for them which will have a long shelf life and would require them to do minimal food preparation, yet still have a 'home cooked meal'. The recipes fit the bill for the most part. In each book I found that there were a few recipes that are great and some I wouldn't try at all. This is what I usually find in any cookbook. I would comment that each book only has about 25 or so recipes in it. The rest of the pages consist of 6 copies each of pre-made instruction cards to enclose with each food package. I did feel disappointed in the number of recipes for the cost of the book

Not much pertinent information for a new collector........2000-05-23
The pictures are exquisite, but as a new collector, I was somewhat lost. I guess the idea is to buy all 5 books. I really don't like the question and answer format. So much of the information there and elsewhere is irrelevant.
Excellent book on collectiong Nippon Porcelain.......1999-08-15
This is a wonderfully informative book on the popular collecting field of Nippon Porcelain. More than half the book is brilliant color photos of a wide variety of pieces with dimensions & estimated retail prices.
What sets this book apart though is the wealth of information for collectors. There is a history of Nippon Porcelain & an insightful section of frequently asked questions. Themes including baseball, dogs & dolls are highlighted.
I especially enjoyed the original documents reproduced here including early ads with items selling for pennies, design patents, beautiful hand painted salesman sample pages and complete selection of back-stamp marks.
There is a well illustrated section on the dangerous reproductions now entering the market and many more tips to aid the new or experienced collector. This is a truly indispensable reference on Nippon.
1 of 5 essential nippon porcelain reference books.......1998-12-31
The 5th series highlights moriage swans and enameling. Reproduction section is more extensive and updated. There is also a section depicting the style evolution of nippon to further help identify and date items. A MUST for all nippon collectors and dealers.

the ONLY book on fengshui worth reading!.......2001-10-21
I have read most of the western books available on this subject, and this one is the best, most useful and down to earth book I ever read. thoroughly recommended!
Eye opening overview of a complex subject.......2001-03-23
This book is visually designed to open the mind. A great choice as a introduction to the complex study of feng shui. I have yet to find another book which handles the conflicting schools of modern and classical feng shui with more diplomacy. I loan this book to friends and family who ask me about feng shui and refer to it often myself. The layout is unconventional yet easy to read. A beautiful book I would highly recommend.
great beginner book.......2000-09-20
I have read many fengshui books. I have always been searching for good beginner book to refer to people come to my web site fengshuihelp.com. Compare to other beginner's book, this one is a little more expensive. However, if you are looking for a full picture of fengshui, this is the best on the market. It is well illustrated in language and graphics. The visual illustration is magnificent. No previouse knowledge of Chinese or fengshui needed. I would specifically recommend it as the first book for people who grown up in the west and interested in the eastern culture. It can also searve as a living room book.
A Beautiful and Informative Book.......2000-08-14
This book is as beautiful as it is informative. The author explains Feng Shui concepts and principles succinctly and eloquently. I found it incredibly easy to follow and understand because the subject matter is well organized and presented in a readable and artistic format. The book itself is a work of art.
Excellent.......2000-04-15
Probably the best book ever written on Feng shui, since the very design of it follows the principles of Feng Shui design - why hasn't anyone else ever thought of it? The author succeeded in putting across the principles , giving very practical tips and with creative flair.
I loved it
Book Description
Fascinating study of geisha, courtesans, kabuki performers as portrayed by masters of Japanese art from 1600 to 1868.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful prints, fascinating essays.......2000-08-09
It is difficult to find an art book that perfectly balances information and art; but Swinton has compiled a book which achieves this balance beautifully. Not only does the reader enjoy large, beautiful color prints of the floating world, but she also is presented with several entertaining and thoughtful essays that begin to demystify the world of the Japanese pleasure quarters. The essays deal with such subjects as the history of Kabuki theater, the life of geisha, and the function of the pleasure quarters in Japanese society. However, the art is not dealt with as mere illustration; the works are analyzed in terms of technique and art history, and the prints are catalogued with extreme care for the art scholar. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in art, Japanese culture, history, or women's studies.
