4 out of 5 stars Informative and Interesting.......2007-01-13

I have not yet finished this book, as it does take awhile to read. It is very informative and has a lot of intersting facts about this Avalon and Glastonbury; however, it can be difficult to read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent historical and mythological reference!.......2003-09-29

Nicholas Mann captures the spirit of Avalon through the combined lenses of history, archeology, mythology and comparative spirituality rarely found in comparable texts. A must-own for anyone interested in Glastonbury, the Arthurian Mythos, spiritual history in sacred Britain, sacred geomety and geomancy. Mann brings a critical yet intuitively insightful perspective to all of the above. Well worth reading more than once!!

5 out of 5 stars Virtual Glastonbury!.......2000-07-07

I've just come back from Glastonbury, and having read this book first helped a great deal. I'm reading it again, and am feeling so enlightened. If you love Avalon, you must have this book.

    Sensuality rating: 7

Hip, hip, hooray! Susan Carroll's Midnight Bride, the third in the St. Leger series, will delight readers with its piquant humor, fiery sensuality, and white-knuckled suspense. Dr. Valentine St. Leger, younger son of Anatole and Madeline St. Leger, is a gifted healer. But his gift, the ability to eradicate his patients' suffering by absorbing it himself, has left Val partially crippled after healing his brother Lance's battle wounds. That matters nothing to Kate Fitzleger, adopted daughter of the St. Leger's bride finder; Kate has loved Val all her life and will do anything--even turn to the dark arts--to make Val return her love and choose her for his bride.

But the St. Leger legend conspires against Val and Kate, promising an untimely death for any woman foolhardy enough to marry into the family. When fate intervenes in the form of a malignant stranger, Val finds himself transformed, ready to risk all--even Kate's life--to slake the passion burning for the mischievous sprite who loves him. Kate, initially thrilled by Val's passionate overtures, begins to question the changes in the man she loves. Could it be just the magic talking? Susan Carroll's suspenseful tale of the supernatural and sexy star-crossed lovers is a page-turner and sure to be another hit. Carroll's fans eagerly await each new offering; expect great things from this gifted storyteller. --Alison Trinkle

    Book Description

In her award-winning historical novel The Bride Finder, bestselling author Susan Carroll bewitched readers with the legend of the St. Leger men--the descendants of a medieval sorcerer haunted by an unnatural past. Now Carroll once again conjures the unforgettable castle by the sea--a place where love is as mysterious and invincible as the family legacy. . . .

Valentine St. Leger is a healer with a wounded heart. Born with the amazing gift to eliminate the suffering of others by taking their pain into his own body, Val's gentle hands cannot change a tormenting truth: he will never marry. According to history, should he defy his destiny and wed, his unfortunate bride would be doomed to an early death. Though he aches for the one woman who knows all his secrets, he cannot return her passion. Until a night of magic transforms Val into a different man, a man with desires he can no longer resist.

Kate Fitzleger has loved Val almost her entire life and is not about to let a foolish superstition ruin her chance for happiness. Venturing into a forbidden room of the St. Leger castle to steal an ancient book of sorcery, she desperately hopes to find a powerful love potion. On All Hallow's Eve, when the spirits of good and evil mingle upon the earth, Kate tempts fate with an unholy spell that goes awry.

When Val awakens, he has no memory of the bizarre events that have changed him--the visit from an old enemy or the return of a lost heirloom that has altered his soul. All he knows is that life is for the living . . . and his fair Kate is ripe for seduction. He will tempt heaven and hell to have her--even if it means he could lose her forever.

Brimming with enchanting characters and stunning atmosphere, Valentine's Bride is a romantic masterpiece that will hold your imagination captive and provide a glimpse of a timeless world found only in dreams or the most treasured love stories.

5 out of 5 stars Best bride finder book yet!.......2007-04-28

A terrific story with a rousing series of final events. This time the author creates more than a love story. It's got it all here, magic, mystery, the awesome Prospero. The love scenes were rocking. Everything about this book was different and interesting. A wonderful side storyline of redemption too that proved as moving as the main story itself. Characterizations of Val & Kate were especially compelling, as was even Victor, and of course Rafe.

I hope Val & Kate build their home at Lostland! I'll be watching for anymore in the series. I have begun to like the St. Leger's that I didn't care for in the first book BRIDE FINDER.

4 out of 5 stars I think this was the best of the three books.......2007-04-05

What a wonderful little tale and a great finish to Carroll's St. Legar series. Kate was a wonderful heroine, and a great foil against Prospero the ghost. I loved their scenes together, they were quite "magical". And I especially loved the scenes after Kate cast her "love spell" and it appeared she may have mistakenly cast it in the wrong direction. LOL.

An extremely pleasant, easy breezy read. Great beach book or for a rainy afternoon.

    3 out of 5 stars Midnight Bride.......2007-04-01

I really like this book. A little mystery, a lot of love, and much suspence. It was a very good book!!

5 out of 5 stars *Sigh* What a sweet love story.......2007-02-04

I love all 3 of Susan Carroll's Leger family novels. After finishing the first one, The Bride Finder, I was hooked. Each subsequent novel was as endearing as the first. Another thoroughly entertaining read, it has been a great treat to myself to read Midnight Bride over several nights, while I soaked in my hot tub - especially after long tiring days. Ms. Carroll, can you please give us more on the Legers?

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2004-06-22

I read romance novels like they are going out of style. At times I feel as if I have read it all. It seems at times as if all romance novels are just one great repeating book with different characters. However, Midnight Bride was a breath of fresh air. I found the plot to be new and exciting. I even began to feel compassion for the villian. I thought it was well written and delightful. Kate was unlike any heroine I have ever read. This was actually the first Susan Carroll book I have ever read but I plan on reading the first two books in the St. Leger saga. The third book didn't really give too much away on the other stories, I am sure I will enjoy the first two books just as much as I enjoyed the thrid.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory approach to theology.......2000-07-13

This book is a one volume compendium of Catholic Theology organized around the Nicene-Constantinople Creed. In addition to a detailed explantion of basic theological principles, the book also traces the history of the creed especially during the first centuries and details the many heresies that contributed to each word being carefully chosen for the final product. The author offers the reader many keen insights into the inner workings of the magisterium as each ecumenical council wrestled with the many agendas presented by the disparate factions who were represented.

4 out of 5 stars Made the Creed relevant for me today.......1999-08-31

Marthaler's book was extremely helpful to me in putting the Creed into a context that is relevant for me today. Gender and the Nicene Creed by Elizabeth Geitz, an Episcopal priest, is an excellent companion to it, offering a completely different perspective. Worship is much more meaningful to me now that I have a clearer idea of what the Creed means. Mindless recitation is over for me!

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent resource.......1998-07-22

This book is an excellent resource for anyone who is interested in obtaining a clear and concise understanding of the Nicene Creed. Father Berard gives a thorough explanation of each article of the Nicene Creed from a biblical, historical and ecumenical perspective.

4 out of 5 stars An American disabuses himself of some culinary prejudice.......2003-08-28

I was sitting in a bar one night reading a copy of Jane Garmey's Great British Cooking (another very good book) when a woman of obvious British extraction came up to me and asked, "Is there really any Great British Cooking?" An interesting question, I thought... Ms. Garmey actually did a pretty good job of making it clear that there was. This book goes much further, though, and should I think be required reading for anyone who wants to know what British food is really all about. (Note: I've not been to the UK, though I'd like to. But I figure the BBC's poll results are about as close as I can get for the time being.)

First off, it's an excellent deal -- the US price of $$$$ is only a dollar or so more than the UKP12.99 cover price. It's a fairly typical British television cookbook, impeccably laid out with near-pornographic food shots and a mouthwatering cover picture of the iconic British quickie dinner, fish and chips, newspaper and all. It's a slim book, with just over a hundred recipes divided into ten categories, including Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Convenience, Outdoor, Party, Comfort, Tea, Festive, and even Food of Love (chocolate gets heavy play here). The book revels in its demographic data, showing differences between male and female tastes as well as regional flavors.

Surprises abound. The convenience food chapter is utterly dominated by Indian and Chinese dishes, as might be expected, but Fish and Chips is the #1. American favorites like doughnuts (said to be a teatime favorite in Wales), brownies, and chili (percieved as a Mexican dish) appear all over the book as well. Scones and clotted cream are tops in the tea category, but some old standbys like steak and kidney pie don't even rate in the top ten of the dinner category. The surprise favorite dinner: Spaghetti Bolognese, an oddity that perhaps reflects the more cosmopolitan tastes of a wired voter base.

The recipes are by and large hip updates to tradition; the scones have a twist of lemon zest, while the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding includes a red wine gravy (a favorite in my house for a few years) and mustard-and-thyme Yorkies. A hamburger recipe transforms the humble burger into lavash-wrapped kofta patties. Bangers and mash gets a hard cider and leek gravy. (A special word must be set aside for the rather uncategorizable (and probably indigestible) "Sausage, Bean, and Egg Bake with Oven-Baked Chips", a peculiar perversion of the classic English breakfast presented primarily as a hangover cure. Your guess is as good as mine as to exactly what that word is.)

This is a book that reveals a culture that may have perhaps gone a bit over the edge with food, but has definitely come to terms with and thoroughly overcome its reputation as a culinary wasteland. To read this book is to see a Great Britain that has learned how to eat, and how to appreciate the blessings of a multicultural heritage at the table (if, perhaps, not in other ways just yet). It's not perfect -- food writer Nigel Slater, author of the foreword, expresses skepticism at some of the outcomes of the poll, which I believe can be explained by the Internet-centered nature of the poll. However, though it's a tough book to find in the US, but it's not an expensive one, and very much worth the trouble to order.

                      3 out of 5 stars Heisey Glass.......2002-05-13

I referred to this volume when I was trying to identify some signed pieces of Heisey glass. The authors have done a beautiful job of describing the history of the company, and the developments of patterns and processes. Most of the photographs are in black and white, but this does not detract from the value of the book because the Gallery section contains beautiful color photos which clearly identify the exquisite colors of this magnificant glassware.
My main concern lies in the fact that the listings of individual pieces in the pattern sections seem to be rather sparse. I was recently trying to identify three signed pieces of Heisey glass, and although I could clearly identify the patterns of two pieces, The listing did not contain the two pieces I was attempting to identify. I found it nessecary to track them down in other glassware books.
The person that specifically collects Heisey will find this book invaluable. However, if you want a ready referrence to carry with you to auntique shops and auctions, you may be dissappointed.

Experienced decorative painters looking to expand their repertoire can travel around the country taking classes from the masters--or they can learn all the secrets of the medium's "Big Brushes" in Decorative Painting: A Classic Collection. In this extensively illustrated guide, 10 of the field's outstanding teachers each share a previously unpublished project. Detailed instructions, complete line-drawn patterns, lengthy materials lists, sample color palettes, and lots of helpful tip boxes provide everything the intermediate to advanced painter needs to re-create these skillfully rendered designs. Featured artists include Sherry C. Nelson, who presents a trompe l'oeil wooden tray featuring a sparrow perched on a doorknob above a hollyhock stalk; Jackie Shaw, who offers a lazy Susan adorned with fruit surrounded by a filete design (a delightful Argentinean folk-art technique); and Priscilla Hauser, whose signature roses bedeck a wooden clock. Some of the artists work in acrylics, others in oils, and one in watercolor. Despite the comprehensive nature of the instructional coverage and the excellent how-to photos, the complexity of most of the designs and the lack of basic introductory coverage make this volume unsuitable for beginners, but dedicated decorative painters will certainly find help refining and perfecting their techniques here. --Amy Handy

The ten very different projects described in this excellent reference book will give you detailed information often not found in other books of this genre. Included in the text are very detailed illustrations not only of the projects themselves, but also of paint values and brush strokes. Each contributing artist seems to almost hold your hand (and your brush!) as they take you from the beginning pattern through to the completed work of art. This is an excellent resource book for the beginning decorative painting student and certainly challenging enough for even the most advanced decorative artist. And the artist's biographies at the end of each project are fun in that they prove to the reader that they, too, started out a beginner just like everyone else.

In this lushly illustrated idea book, Bonnie Trust Dahan offers a wealth of innovative ideas, designs, and delights: aromatic herbs near the bath, an indoor hammock, a stunning birch log with branches as a coat rack, an outdoor swing on an indoor porch, a rustic potting bench as a kitchen enhancement. Room by room, she takes the reader through a multitude of inventive fantasies that can be realized and created by a person living in a hilltop mansion in the country or a walk-up studio apartment in the heart of a bustling, crowded urban center. Using the many examples shown and described, the reader can customize his or her own dream garden house, and will be inspired to do so by this lovely book. --Mark A. Hetts

I first saw this book in Restoration Hardware, where I was working at the time. It was an *immediate* hit with the style conscious staff. One woman got a dreamy look on her face as she read it "I could live in any of these" and I know exactly what she meant. It is of particular interest to those in Northern California as many of the resources listed in the back are local to us. A charming and keepable book.

                        2.400 miniature masterpieces.

A matchbox label collector is called a phillumenist. But you don't have to be one to love these tiny works of art. The popularity of collecting matchboxes is growing because they are affordable and a joy to look at.

Matchbox Labels features 2.400 of the best specimens, chosen for their charm and beauty. The matchbook labels are organized geographically, sorted within each group by theme, and captioned with insightful text.

                        The book covers selections from:

The labels range from minute works of socialist realism from the former USSR to marvelous naïve animal and bird pictures from southern India and sophisticated graphics and illustrations from Japan.

A brief introduction offers a concise history of matchbook art and provides helpful advice on how to start, gather and organize a collection of your own.

Matchbox Labels is an eye-catching and fascinating reference for art lovers, designers and collectors.

4 out of 5 stars Small time pleasures........2007-03-25

I bought this as I'm interested in popular graphics and the two thousand samples included certainly capture the flavor of this tiny corner of the printed ephemera market.

The book is very well designed and printed but ultimately I was rather disappointed with the contents. There is a sameness about so many of these labels. The huge number from the old Soviet Union and the Eastern Block certainly look similar, only to be expected I guess but other nations output also seem bland and unimaginative. Perhaps the reason is that most of the labels included are brands rather than advertising labels that are so common today. Strangely none of the labels are dated but I would guess that most of them were produced several decades ago and the cheapness of liquid lighters now has reduced match output.

As another reviewer has commented the absence of North American product maybe also explains the lack of pizzazz and color. The matchbook was the flame of choice for Americans and there are no examples of these included.

This will probably be the standard book about matchbox labels because it is so comprehensive. The American matchbook is another story; their colorful design and huge output over the years will still produce occasional new titles. The one I like best is:Close Cover Before Striking: The Golden Age of Matchcover Art (Recollectibles) with several hundred matchbook covers in an attractively designed book.

                        3 out of 5 stars Excellent production, So-so selection.......2006-10-19

Well designed and printed on quality paper, this well-stocked archive is a decent production for collectors, fans, and graphic designers. It's organization is clear and the color labels easily identified.

However, the most obvious shortcoming, and one that I found frustrating, was the amazing lack of North American selections. Nearly the entire 2,000 examples showcased are from former Soviet Union satellites and Asia. This isn't necessarily a bad thing - as you get a very good sense of Soviet-era constructivism and wonderful Asian simplicity & beauty. But the lack of labels from the United States, Canada and Mexico is sorely missed.

Although unbalanced - I would recommend this to devotees of the genre - if only to expose them to labels that aren't often seen. However, for graphic designers and fans of Americana, I would recommend focusing on selections by Chronicle Books.

                          Book Description

As the career of Worsley Senior languished amid studio politics, young Wally began his own odyssey through the Hollywood legacy of the twentieth century, spending almost two decades at MGM with such actors as Greta Garbo, Jeanette MacDonald and Gene Kelly, on pictures like The Wizard of Oz and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. Captures a fascinating picture of Hollywood at work.
