Book Description

Yochanan Rivlin, a professor at Haifa University, is a man of boundless and often naïve curiosity. His wife, Hagit, a district judge, is tolerant of almost everything but her husband's faults and prevarications. Frequent arguments aside, they are a well-adjusted couple with two grown sons.
When one of Rivlin's students-a young Arab bride from a village in the Galilee-is assigned to help with his research in recent Algerian history, a two-pronged mystery develops. As they probe the causes of the bloody Algerian civil war, Rivlin also becomes obsessed with his son's failed marriage.
Rivlin's search leads to a number of improbable escapades. In this comedy of manners, at once deeply serious and highly entertaining, Yehoshua brilliantly portrays characters from disparate sectors of Israeli life, united above all by a very human desire for, and fear of, the truth in politics and life.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Journey.......2007-05-03

To read Yehoshua is to go on an unknown, but fullfilling trip. This book wanders to many places and has many themes, but it ultimately gives the reader the sense that this was a journey worth taking. The characters are so well defined that there is no mystery in what they want. They do not always succeed in their endevours, but the reader is filled in to the mystery that the characters do not always solve. This was a terrific read. Next to The Lover, my favorite of his books

5 out of 5 stars Rich, layered, wonderful!.......2006-12-02

This was my first experience with Yehoshua and I am permanently hooked. This complex, intensely human and beautifully translated story provides the reader with insights into the complicated and overlapping relationships that Palestinians and Israelis share and live out daily in Israel and the West Bank. The wide range of characters in the book is both typical and radically atypical in that Yeshoshua's people are dealing with normal family and day-to-day issues, but most of them are far from average in their professions, interests and awareness of the dangerous context that they live in. There's no way to adequately address the story line of this novel, other than to say that it just grabs you and pulls you in from the get-go. The characters are beautifully sketched, unfathomable at times, neurotic, loving and always interesting. The reader winds up caring deeply about them all. The only thing disappointing about the book was that it eventually ended.
One final comment. I read this book for the Middle East Book Club that I have belonged to for some years. We rarely read fiction for this group, but this novel provided fodder for the best discussion we've had about the region for a long time. We are still arguing about the meaning of the title.

5 out of 5 stars I hate thinking of titles.......2004-10-09

It's rather hard to describe this enormous book in one short review. It's not a book really, but rather a chunk of life that sits quivering on your bookshelf. Other readers have summarized the plot well enough - it's a book about relationships, both political and personal - husband and wife, father and son, Israeli and Arab. I won't repeat.

What sets this book apart from other books is it's slow pace and masterful attention to detail. It draws you in, without your realizing it. By revealing so many aspects of the characters' lives and relationships, it gradually builds a complete and entire picture of the characters' world, until you feel as though it's your world too. Nothing is particularly suspenseful - you just feel as though you're living the main character's life, day by day, and discovering the world from a new perspective. At age seventeen, I am proud to state that I have served as a judge, studied Algeria's war-torn history, been through a broken marriage, and visited the West Bank with my personal driver. I cried and laughed with Ofer, felt Rivlin's anxiety and curiousity and excitement. A book that causes a female high school student to identify with a meddlesome old orientalist has to be something special.

I visited Jerusalem a few weeks after I read the book, and I was completely excited when we ate at a Humus place in Abu Gush, and when we passed through the Talpiyyot Neighborhood and saw the signs pointing to Shai Agnon's house, as if I was revisiting places that I knew well.

In that sense, this is a good read for anyone who wants to get a feel of Israel. However, the book was written before the recent intifada, and Israeli/Arab-Palestinian relationships in the book are FAR more easygoing and friendly than they are now. I cried when I read the beautiful chapters describing Rivlin's visits to Ramallah, because there was once a time when Palestinians and Israelis could listen together to poetry about love. Not anymore! I can't even tell you whether the characterization of Arabs in the book is accurate or not, because I met more Arabs while reading than I ever have in real life!

To all the readers who are wondering about the awkward prose - it must be the result of translation. I read the book in it's original language, and the writing flows completely naturally. Nothing sounds contrived. However it is impossible to translate the author's toying with titles and tenses into English, because of differences in Hebrew and English grammatical structure which I am sure no one wants to hear about!

Anyway, I highly recommend this book to everyone. Read it in Hebrew if you can, but if not, the story is worth struggling through the most mediocre of translations. It will give you a personal insight into lives that could easily have been real, as well as teaching you more than you ever wanted to know about some aspects of Israeli society.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting story but problems in execution.......2004-06-12

I found there was much to like and much to dislike about this book. The story of Rivlin, a Middle East scholar whom we follow as he embarks on several related quests - first, to understand the breakup of his son's marriage, second, to understand how the history of Algeria is related to the current violence in that country, and third, to explore the relationship of Jews and Arabs in Israel - is interesting and thoughtful, and all the players in all the relationships are treated with respect and empathy. Having lived in Israel for several years in the mid-80's, I enjoyed the descriptions of daily living, the sights, sound, and style of the place. I also liked the fact that the title of the book could apply to almost all of the women in the novel - Galya, the ex-daughter in law, Samaher, Rivlin's long-time Arab student pursuing her M.A., Hannah Tedeschi, the wife of Rivlin's former teacher, as well as many others.

That being said, I found the writing itself stylistically intolerable in many places to the point where I almost couldn't finish the book - though I'm glad I did, since I liked the story. .

The writer goes through all kinds of contortions in order to refer to his characters as something other than their names, and uses these same designations over and over again to the point of absurdity. Examples are - Rivlin is referred to constantly as "the Orientalist", and sometimes, for a change, as "the middle-aged Orientalist", "the elderly Orientalist", or "the Jewish Orientalist". Rivlin's wife Hagit is "the judge", his former teacher Tedeschi is "the Jerusalem polymath", and Tedeschi's wife is, awkwardly, "the translatoress".

There are a handful of unexplained shifts into the second person, and one first person passage, sprinkled through the novel. The passages in the second person don't have any kind of unifying theme to them, and so appear random and jarring - more as though the writer wanted to try something interesting as a change of pace for a few pages than anything else.

Other examples - in the first part of the book, Rivlin embarks on an Alice-in-Wonderland like journey to the Arab side of the region following his student's cousin, Rashid, who is referred to as a "sable-skinned young man", "[Samaher's] jet-colored intercessor", "the sable-skinned impresario", "the jet-colored messenger", "the displaced and irreplaceable messenger with the coal-black eyes", "the coal-eyed messenger"... you get the idea. The "coal eyes" metaphor is used so many times in this passage that I actually started to keep count (I think I reached 6) - an obvious distraction to the novel. And one last sentence that I simply have to cite for its awkwardness - "Indeed, had Rivlin surmised that the empty-handed Arab had come not to deliver but to fetch - ... he would never have risen in the end to throw out the love baby of sleep with the golden bathwater rippling in the early-morning light by running to the front door, dripping wet and blind, and petitioning abjectly from his side of it:"

This being the first A.B. Yehoshua book I've read, I wasn't sure if this was the fault of the writing or of the translation, and am interested to hear insights about this from any other readers.

3 out of 5 stars Contrived and lengthy.......2004-05-13

While Yehoshua has proven himself to be an excellent writer in the past, his latest does not measure up to his standards. Not that it's a bad book: it's definitely readable and somewhat enjoyable. However, its basic premise - which is the engine that drives most of the story - feels very contrived, and the story itself is at times slow, not to say boring. The political aspect, as always a major facet of Yehoshua's work, feels tacked on to the story instead of being an essential part of it. And all in all, there is just too little story here to support such a long book.

In summary - not bad, but I wouldn't make this my first Yehoshua.

                      Book Description

Based on his extensive experience as coach and mentor to many thousands of Christian leaders across a broad spectrum of ministry settings, Reggie McNeal helps spiritual leaders understand that they will self-select into or out of greatness. In this important book, McNeal shows how great spiritual leaders are committed consciously and intentionally to seven spiritual disciplines, habits of heart and mind that shape both their character and competence:

The discipline of self-awareness—the single most important body of information a leader possesses

The discipline of self-management—handling difficult emotions, expectations, temptations, mental vibrancy, and physical well-being

The discipline of self-development—a life-long commitment to learning and growing and building on one's strengths

The discipline of mission—enjoying the permissions of maintaining the sense of God's purpose for your life and leadership

The discipline of decision-making—knowing the elements of good decisions and learning from failure

The discipline of belonging—the determination to nurture relationships and to live in community with others, including family, followers, mentors, and friends

The discipline of aloneness—the intentional practice of soul-making solitude and contemplation

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book! .......2007-07-05

This has become one of my all-time favorite books on the subject of leadership (and I've read books by some of the most well-know leadership experts).

Usually I run into two problems with other leadership books. First, some of them are just boring to me. Sometimes I have felt like I'm reading through some dry, academic work. This is not too fun--it seems counterintuitive to try to sharpen your skills with a dull book. Secondly, some leadership books are too repetitive and vague. The information kind of runs together, with one chapter looking suspiciously like the previous chapter.

McNeal's book is different. It was a joy to read, and each of the 7 disciplines made a lot of sense to me. Practicing Greatness is more about being a leader than "doing" leadership roles. This book further confirmed my decision to stay in my current ministry and continue to do something that I'm gifted for and passionate about.

I hope you'll take time to read it.

                      4 out of 5 stars A good ministry tool.......2007-02-06

Better than your average Christian leadership book. It's neither so business-minded as to make you wonder where God is in all this, nor is it so spiritual that it neglects practical application. It challenges you to examine yourself through the Word of God and develop healthy relationships - which are often lacking most in church circles.

                      4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-12

This is a great book, and a must read for those looking to better themselves in the areas of leadership and life.

                      3 out of 5 stars A quick read..........2006-11-27

Practicing Greatness is a quick read that will challenge the ministry-weary practitioner. While there are some sound principles, it's better as an introductory read for emerging spiritual leaders. It would have been nice to have more in-depth, scripturally inspired examples. Nonetheless it is a worthwhile read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Leadership Book.......2006-11-10

One of the best leadership books I have read. Deals more with the person than with the tasks of leadership. Would be a great book for a group of leaders to read together and discuss.

                      Book Description

This book describes the impact of U.S. government civilization and education policies on a Native American family and its tribe from 1763 to 1995. While engaged in a personal quest for his family's roots in Choctaw tribal history, the author discovered a direct relationship between educational policies and their impact on his family and tribe. Combining personal narrative with traditional historical methodology, the author details how federal education policies concentrated power in a tribal elite that controlled its own school system in which students were segregated by social class and race.

The book begins with the cultural differences that existed between Native Americans and European colonists. The civilization policies discussed begin in the 1790s when both Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson searched for a means of gaining the lands occupied by the southern tribes, including the Choctaws. The story involves a complicated interaction between government policies, the agenda of white educators, and the desires of Native Americans. In a broader context, it is a study of the evolution of an American family from the extended support of the community and clan of the past, to the present world of single parents adrift without community or family safety nets.

                        Book Description

Proverbs 25:11 perfectly describes this collection of 100 daily teachings, questions, and prayer from the Word: "Timely advice is as lovely as gold apples in a silver basket" (Proverbs 25:11, TLB).

Within this book are timely words to cause you to rethink Scriptures and principles you may now take for granted.

One Golden Apple reads in part:

I read a story about a Christian who had a dream. In the dream, an angel came and took the Christian to a gathering where a familiar-looking person was encouraging many, offering wonderful words of godly counsel, love, hope, and comfort. It was clear that this person was both respected and loved.

Everyone in the room was blessed by the life of Christ that seemed to continuously emanate from this Christian. The dreamer asked the angel, "Why does that person look so familiar?"

The angel replied, "This person is who God had wanted you to be today."

Just a story, I know, but it caused me to think. Who would I be today if I had surrendered my life to Jesus right after I was born again? Is it too late for us to still become the men and women we were supposed to be today?

Do not worry about any right or proper approach to studying these pages—just open them up and begin to enjoy the taste of the fruit they contain.

                                        4 out of 5 stars Knives 2004.......2004-06-03

As a new knife maker I found this book to be very helpful in visualizing knife design and the different styles. You wont believe the craftsmanship displayed in this book. I would highly recommend this book not only for knife makers but buyers as well.
Criticisms; I would have left out the ads in the back of the book and had fewer "factor trends", personally I would have paid a few dollars more to leave them out and see more custom knives. More color pictures would be nice as well. But still overall it has definitely set the bar for me in quality knife making. Great job Joe and staff I look forward to the 2005 addition.

                                          Book Description

This intriguing challenge to traditional views of history, provides explanations for many of the myths and legends that continue to haunt humankind. In particular, it argues that, in the last five millennia, the Earth has undergone several catastrophic encounters with comets and their debris--and that mythology has preserved these events better than so-called "factual" records.

                                            Book Description

Traditionally the center of the home, the kitchen is key to successful living. Decorator Annie Sloan, one of the world's leading experts on color and interior painting, has produced a range of stunning professional schemes to give the most popular room of the home an entirely new look with a minimum of effort and little expense. Using her unique expertise, she shows how to decorate every kitchen area - walls, cupboards, and surfaces - providing clear instructions and step-by-step color photography. Projects range from an exuberant Mexican-style blue-and-yellow color-washed kitchen to revamping a battered family table and chairs as Swedish-style lime-washed dining furniture. Annie Sloan's Painted Kitchen also reveals simple afternoon makeovers and ingenious finishing touches, such as painting cupboard knobs or the inside of kitchen drawers in a contrast color to the outside for a fun, fashionable finish. All the projects are suitable for beginners and many feature style variations for the more adventurous.

If I had been able to peruse this book in a store I never would have bought it. While the pictures are very nice, I know I'll never actually do any of the things in it, so it was pretty much a total waste for me.

                                            Book Description

Written and Designed by Tomato Bareback is brilliant. A stunning collection of personal work created and compiled by the members of the world-renowned, London based art collective, Tomato.

It was 1991 when Steve Baker, Michael Horsham, Karl Hyde, Jason Kedgley, Rick Smith, Simon Taylor, Dirk Van Dooran, John Warwicker and Graham Wood pooled their creative talent and started a journey that would become one of the major success stories of the 1990s. Their commercial work includes short films and television commercials and they have provided 'strategic thinking' for a number of leading corporations in Europe, the U.S.A. and Japan.

Bareback is a distillation of the group's personal work which has been exhibited at 15 venues around the world in the past 18 months including Tokyo, Munich and Brno. In style and tenor it is pure cutting edge. Bold, tantalizing images in color and black and white leap off the pages and challenge the eye, while the accompanying text provokes, prods, and draws the reader in.

For anyone that is a fan of Tomato's work this should get you very excited. This book is similar to Process in that it takes the private work of the guys at Tomato and combines it with company work to create some brilliant poetic imagery. the text is typical of Karl Hyde (see mmm. Skyscraper, I Love You; Underworld, Process) but not for the literal poetry enthusiast. It gets very abstract at points. Don't expect the beautiful grunge of Process and mmm. Skyscraper, I Love You. This book takes the new clean approach that Tomato is currently exploring. A nice break from what people have begun to expect tomato to produce.

                                            3 out of 5 stars something missing.......2000-05-28

Bareback doesn't quite start from where Process finished. It's a different, more clean end product. Out go the textured pages and wonderful dirty typography, and in come experiments with light and bare text. There's a lot more to read, and a lot more to discover in this collection of artwork, but it lacks some of the roughness and originality that made Process what it was. There's something missing, some drive missing behind parts of Bareback. Having said that, it's still a worthy purchase if you liked Process and (or) Skyscraper, but don't expect it to have the same affect you got from it's predecessors.
