"Barely four years after winning an Oscar, Charlie has sunk into the ranks of Hollywood bottom-feeders -- reduced to living in his nephew's pool house, kiting checks and taking the bus to his weekly Debtors Anonymous meeting, where he meets a mysterious ex-CIA agent who proposes to resuscitate Charlie's foundering career -- in the beyond surreal world of reality TV. Charlie puts his tap shoes on to sell a show about a ruthless Uzbek warlord and his family (""think The Osbournes meets The Sopranos"") to a rogue division of ABC, known as ABCD, which operates out of a skunkworks in Manhattan Beach, California, and whose mandate is to develop, under top secret cover like that for the Manhattan Project, extreme reality TV shows to bolster the network's ratings. Warlord becomes a breakout hit and results not only in causing one of America's largest entertainment conglomerates to go into full damage-control mode but also in shifting the balance of power in Central Asia and in proving that in show business it's not over till the mouse sings. Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully sharp and funny read.......2007-06-26
I ordered this book before going on a trip to Central Asia, not very sanguine about its possibilities as a good read. Wrong. It's fabulously funny and biting, as much a send-up of American culture and "reality TV" shows as it insightful into Central Asia. I thought that Lefcourt might be exaggerating about the political situation in Turkmenistan--the president who renames days of the week after his own relatives--but having been there, I realize it's true. Paul Theroux's article in the New Yorker about Turkmenistan (June 2007) is a good companion. The others on my trip similarly enjoyed this novel; it was laugh out loud funny.
From a Manhattan Beach Native.......2006-06-05
A friend bought me this since I live in Manhattan Beach and I found it very entertaining. It's silly and wild and a good observance of The Industry, where nobody thinks about a hit, they're just worried they will be associated with a failure. I'd never read anything by Peter Lefcourt before, but this read has encouraged me to try another of his books.
Get ready to laugh out loud.......2005-09-14
Yesterday, I read and reveled in Peter Lefcourt's The Manhattan Beach Project. Set in Los Angeles and Central Asia, it's a deeply funny and satiric take on U.S. TV programming, Hollywood producers, the CIA and others. Much out-loud laughter during reading. Finest kind. Do yourself a favor and read it soon.
A great premise, but oddly disappointing.......2005-09-06
Perhaps I was expecting a hybrid of Stephen Fry and Gary Shteyngart, but the book seemed off balance. While entertaining, the parodying of Hollywood stereotypes at every possible opportunity somehow made the entire book seem as dispensable as the various airheads that wander in and out of the story. Most of the characters are cartoon vignettes, making it a bit difficult (for me, at least) to stay interested in what happens to them.
I'm not suggesting that this should have been anything more than a one-day beach read, but it was disappointing after all the great reviews I'd seen of this.
Loved it!.......2005-07-10
Very funny sequel to "The Deal". Lefcourt is one of my favorite fun authors. If you want another great read, get "The Dreyfus Affair".

A Scandalous Elopement
The Marquis of Templeton has faced every sort of danger in his work for the King, but chasing after a wayward spinster who's had the effrontery to run off with the wrong man hardly seems worth his considerable talents. But when the heiress in question is none other than Lady Diana Fordham, Temple is about to meet his match. Tempestuous and passionate, headstrong and opinionated, the lady is everything a man should avoid...
A Dangerous Plan
Diana has no intention of making Temple's assignment easy. In fact she has every reason to turn his life upside down -- just as he did to hers when he broke her heart years ago. Now it's Diana's turn to give Temple a lesson in love, from a teasing glance to a scandalous embrace. However, as she leads him on a merry chase from London to Gretna Green, they soon realize that a kiss once given is hard to forget, and a rekindled passion is impossible to deny.

Customer Reviews:
But, did you have to make Diana wait soooo long?.......2004-08-24
I enjoyed the story and really liked Diana and Temple, both- but EB was wrong in making the time line soooo long - why not 3 or 5 years instead of 9 to 10?
This was the first EB for me to read and I definitely enjoyed her talent. I am sorry that I didn't know to read One Night of Passion first, though - but didn't find it a stumbling block for me. I was able to follow the story and get into the characters well enough. Lady Diana Fordham lost her heart to Marquis of Templeton (Temple for short) a long time ago. She had hope he would notice but he never seemed to come around. At one time she decided to move on and marry his cousin only to withdraw her agreement for engagment. Her heart wasn't in it. Now ten years later Diana sets up her own elopement with a scandrel of the Ton and everyone is shocked. Her father offers her hand in marriage to the first man that is able to bring her back. Temple has no design to go get her until his secret employer orders him to go get her and see that she is married as soon as possible. He leaves with no plans on being the one that she marries. Boy, is he fooled! Things get to hopping! Temple discovers that the French are after Diana with plans of their own, Diana's fiance is murdered, and Temple is accused of doing it. Oh... the story gets even better. In the middle of all that is going on, Diana forces Temple to admit his love for her. I think my favorite part is when Diana shows up at a Masquarade Ball dressed as a greek goddess only wearing the sheer curtains from Temple's rented room drapped over her naked body and a face mask. Boy, that caused a stir! ha, ha!!! A good read with romance and excitment to keep the story going.
Kept me from getting any work done for two days!.......2003-11-07
I just finished Stealing the Bride and loved it!! What a fun book! I absolutely loved Temple and Diana and thought they were the best characters I've read in a long time. The plot line was humorous and kept the reader guessing page after page. This book gave me a really enjoyable few days, when I didn't get any work done, because I wanted to keep reading! :-)
Another romantically wonderful romp from Elizabeth Boyle!.......2003-08-21
I adored the charming, scene-stealing Marquis of Templeton (Temple) from Elizabeth Boyle's previous book, ONE NIGHT OF PASSION, and couldn't wait to see who would be the lady to win his heart. Little did I know that lady would be Diana Fordham, a 29-year old hellion who had once been engaged to Temple's cousin, Colin.
In STEALING THE BRIDE, we find out that Temple and Diana are star-crossed lovers who might have had their own happy-ever-after years ago if not for the manipulations of Temple's rigid grandfather. Now Temple is a man with a secret--no mere society fop whose greatest skill is tying an elegant cravat, the outwardly affable Temple is actually a skilled spy for the Crown. When Lady Diana is reported kidnapped and suspected to be on her way to Gretna Green to wed, Temple is assigned to see her brought home . . . and married at once to the first available man he can find. Temple is certain that man will not be him, but Diana has other plans.
A delightful battle of wills and desires ensues, made all the more enjoyable by an ongoing chase by Napoleon's cronies that sends the pair into hiding and on the run across England. A wonderful romance with many surprising twists and turns, STEALING THE BRIDE is a 5-star keeper!
Very Enjoyable Regency.......2003-07-24
England 1809 - At twenty-nine years old Lady Diana Fordham is known by the ton as an eccentric spinster with no chance of marrying - a bit long in the tooth in spite of a very ample dowry. Beautiful, intelligent, and patient, Diana knows what she wants and has waited long enough! The man who broke her heart ten years ago had just run out of time and now Diana was ready to launch an elaborate plan to storm his defenses and bring him to task! She devises a plan to make it appear that she has been kidnapped by the worst sort of rake she could find - knowing in her heart that Temple would come to rescue her. Her father, Lord Fordham, raises the alarm that she has been abducted and announces that whoever rescues her will be the man Diana will marry her - and so the race was on!
The Marquis of Templeton, known as the "Temple", appears as an `idiot fop' to most observers. He has used this ruse to disguise his true identity as a very courageous and effective spy. The Foreign Office assigns him the task of rescuing the chit and see her married to one of two suitors that have asked for her hand in marriage. Temple would rather not have to do this as the less time spent in Diana's company the better. He has always secretly been in love with Diana but through some very convoluted logic (it's a guy thing), born of stubbornness and rebellion, has distanced himself from her - convinced that he would place her in danger. Unfortunately, danger has caught up with Diana, in the form of, and from a source that no one would have suspected as Temple and the `heiress bride stealers' race on to Gretna Green.
STEALING THE BRIDE should steal the hearts of most Regency romance readers. The last ditch effort of the strong and resourceful lead heroine, Lady Diana, to bring Temple up to snuff was for me a lovely plot that I truly enjoyed. The supporting characters were delightful and charmingly amusing and the re-introduction of characters from her previous novels has me now scurrying around looking for the earlier related publications. I have not been disappointed by this author as she brings originality, sparkling dialog and feeling to her characters that make you a part of the `family' and looking for more. This was a truly enjoyable read that I can heartily recommend.
Save Your Money.......2003-07-23
I concur with the July 9th reviewer as she wrote when she was 3/4 done with the book; it has the craziest, not-to-be-believed plot- and she's sorry she's kept on reading. I am also 3/4 done and I can't believe I am still reading. The first few pages were interesting and then it is all downhill.
Save Your Money and buy something else. Wish I would've checked here first for a review!

The authors, both avid fishermen from their youth, share their life stories, successes and failures along with the lessons they have learned through their many years of fishing.
Their spiritual insight illuminated by their fishing adventures makes a person stop and contemplate their own situation in life.
A great book for those who love to fish and even those who don't but struggle with the ups and downs and meaning of life.

Great Primer for Beginning Macrobiotics.......2006-12-08
I just started this healthy way of feeding my mind, body and soul and this book has helped define how to cook just about everything in the macrobiotic diet. From Sea Veggies, Legumes, Whole Grains, Soups, Pickles, Condiments and Desserts, this book has it all. I highly recommend it!
A flexible macrobiotic cookbook covering a range of dishes.......1999-02-23
Macrobiotics is the logical extension of the current movement towards sustainable development - from the community and down to the level of the individual. In a word it represents a practical way to achieve individual sustainability in an increasingly dangerous world governed by degenerative diseases such as cancer, heart disease and the like many of which are induced by negative aspects of the degraded environment in which many of us currently live.
The philosophy behind macrobiotics is clearly presented and the argument for following the approach, already adopted by traditional populations to ensure freedom from such diseases, is presented in a compelling manner. Macrobiotics owes its core foundation to the diatary practices of traditional Japan but macro (great) biotic (life) diets can be linked to many traditional, grain-rich cuisines. The basic elements of the Japanese-based components of the diet are well described and illustrated in color. The resulting account is sufficient to enable a novice to start the diet and an old-hand will find endless enjoyment in the suggested dishes.
More to the point, the recipes are sophisticated and mouth-watering while at the same time complying with the essence of the macrobiotic philosopy which advises eating only whole foods (no refined products) and maintaining around 40%-50% intake of whole (or FRESHLY broken-down ie. flaked, kibbled etc.) grains.
The book represents an excellent introduction to the practicalities of a macrobiotic diet and only immediate tuition by a macrobiotic chef could improve on the presentation.
I recommend this book most highly to all those seeking to find their way towards living health on the macrobiotic path-way.

Book Description
• Acclaimed stage and screen actor Keith Michell delivers a cookbook filled with the fabulous recipes that keep him healthy, active, and in the spotlight.
• Includes over 200 recipes, many appearing for the first time, as well as seasonal menu suggestions.
• Answers the questions that too often obscure macrobiotic practices.
• Revised, expanded, and newly illustrated edition of Practically Macrobiotic.
In the latest edition of this unique cookbook, internationally acclaimed actor Keith Michell draws aside the curtain of mystery that too often obscures macrobiotics. With an inimitable and entertaining style, Michell shows that being practically macrobiotic doesn't have to mean a life of food denial and strict diets, but instead can provide a way to enjoy eating heathily from the vast variety of foods that nature supplies.
With the understanding of someone who has taken to heart a new way of life, Keith Michell explains just what macrobiotics is all about. He has painstakingly sought answers to the many questions commonly asked about the macrobiotic diet. Practically macrobiotic in both senses of the expression, Michell is able to offer us refreshing and appealing explanations of the principles behind this lifestyle and way of eating. With over 200 delicious recipes--many of them appearing here for the first time--and original color illustrations by the author himself, Keith Michell's Practically Macrobiotic Cookbook gives full creative expression to a man who is always a star, whether on stage or in the kitchen.
Customer Reviews:
I use this book constantly!.......2002-08-13
I have been off and on macrobiotic for years but sometimes just want more variety in my eating. This cookbook offers a bit more in the way of spices and jazzing up food than the traditional macro cookbooks I own. I appreciate the fact that he has a small section with a suggested list of seasonal daily menus so that I don't have to constantly come up with a balanced yin-yang meal on my own. The recipes are wonderful. There are recipes that I can barely read anymore, as I have made them so often and they are totally disfigured with blobs of tamari and other ingredients. If you like to eat simply and healthy with lots of variety, but still want to stick with the macrobiotic principles, this book is well worth getting.
Gigigirl2.......2000-10-11
Anything Keith Michell writes or does is fine with me. After all, who can argue with Henry VIII? Handsome, youthful and still going strong, he must be doing something right. Maybe his role as the progressively aging, fat and unattractive Henry put him on the course for staying trim and vigorous into his 70s. I can't wait to read it!

Amazon.com
For most people, the mere thought of hiring a contractor is enough to induce nightmares of epic proportions--crazed contractors showing up late, leaving early, and offering shoddy workmanship at best, all to the tune of some figure that's 10 times what was originally promised. If this sounds all too familiar, and you're looking at diving into a home-improvement or remodeling project, pick up Duncan C. Stephen's The Unofficial Guide to Hiring Contractors. Stephens, who lived through the complete remodel of his 750-square-foot ranch-style home--now a 1,600-square-foot Cape Cod--knows whereof he speaks. From finding a contractor and surviving the remodeling ordeal to controlling the work and wrapping up the job--as well as additional in-depth discussions of specific remodeling projects, a resource guide, and helpful charts and checklists--Stephens's expert advice will get you on the road to the home of your dreams.
Book Description
Millions of dollars are spent on home renovations each year. . . and millions more on lawsuits over poor workmanship, scheduling, or contract terms. So when the roof needs re-shingling or the kitchen has to be painted, how does a homeowner get the work done without being taken to the cleaners?
The Unofficial Guide to Hiring Contractors teaches readers to assess their needs, research their options, and make decisions that can save them a bundle. It addresses the homeowner's concerns by giving them the low-down on finding a contractor, interviewing him or her, understanding fees, and confronting issues of quality, timeliness, and organization. It also reveals what contractors won't tell you -- and shows how to avoid getting burned.

The Book You Must Have.......2003-05-22
This book is a gem. If you are thinking about remodeling, buy the book and read it before you do anything! I used this book as my guide to remodeling my 1000-sq-foot ranch, improving the kitchen, baths and windows. This book was at its best when it came to tips about dealing with contractors and builders (and what the differences are!!) I believe that my wife and I would be much more out of pocket and out of temper if we hadn't followed Mr. Stephens' sound advice.
Help for the helpless.......1999-02-27
If I ever do any remodeling again, I'm handing a copy of this book to the contractor! It's so clear on what you should expect from your contractor, and what you can do to make the job move smoothly -- and what to do when the inevitable problems creep in. Speaking of creeps, the contractors I used when I renovated my NYC co-op were the worst -- the work looked great, but they were from Long Island and had failed to do the work to NYC code! The problems wound up costing me hundreds of dollars and hours of time, and the contractors had disappeared by the time the bills came due, even after they swore they'd make the changes themselves at no cost to me. Did I ever have the kind of binding contract this book talks about? Contract -- what's a contract? I was foolish, yes, but I won't be caught in this bind again, thanks to the Unofficial Guide.

German expressionist painter Max Beckmann, whose paintings were influenced by horrific scenes he witnessed as a medical orderly in World War I, was eventually labeled a "degenerate artist" by the Nazis and forced to flee his homeland. In this collection of essays, speeches, and letters, Beckmann emerges as a deeply intelligent and sensitive observer of the world. Of particular note are writings from the battlefields of 1915, and some of his instructional comments to students from his time spent teaching in the United States in the late 1940s.
Book Description
One of the most important German artists of the twentieth century, Max Beckmann is known for the depth and sensuous force of his works, but little is known about his personal life. Self-Portrait in Words reveals Beckmann's experience of life from the first years of his career in Berlin and Paris through his final years in the United States. This collection of Beckmann's writings serves as a companion to his art and a testament to the complexities of his life.
"Barbara Copeland Buenger . . . has done an excellent job of editing and annotating Beckmann's voluminous private and public writings."—Andrea Barnet, New York Times Book Review

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-10-19
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a beginning sock knitter, finally a book with multiple sock patterns, including one that you knit flat without those darn dpns, that is till you get to the heel and toe. I'm tired of sticking myself inthe eye or nose with dpn's! Written clearly and concisely, a joy to your book collection
The Twisted Sisters Sock Workbook.......2007-08-09
The directions for mixing dyes and using them to dye and paint roving and yarn are excellent. They are clearly written and illustrated. The directions for socks are equally well written and easy to follow. The photographs are wonderful and make me want to make almost all of the projects!
Great Photography, Spinning Section Could be Stronger.......2007-04-10
This book lived up to my expectations in some areas, but not others. I don't really blame it for coming a bit short because it tries to do so much. It aims to be a guide through the process of dyeing, spinning, designing, and knitting socks. I found the dyeing section highly useful. The differences between hot pour and cold pour dyeing are clearly discussed with large, clear step by step photos. In general, the photography in this book is one of its best attributes. I also learned a lot in the section discussing how to manipulate a painted roving to obtain a wide variety of effects in the finished yarn. I was a bit disappointed in the scant coverage of the technical aspects of spinning. Vogel prefers singles or 2-ply yarns, while I was looking for advice on how to spin a sturdy 3-ply for durable socks. The sock knitting section contains pretty standard info, but may be more complete than other books. Short-row, heel flap, and several types of afterthought heel are discussed, with information on mending and reknitting each type.
Another frontier.......2007-03-09
This book is like playing a video game where you reach higher and higher levels. It is an adventure in new experiences, and takes sock knitting up a notch. All I need to do now is raise and sheer my own sheep to spin the yarn and I've come full circle! This is a must-have for the adventurer.
A Great Reference Book.......2007-01-14
As a spinner, dyer and knitter of socks, I find this book an excellent addition to my library. It is easy to follow and well illustrated, with good information about the wool to choose for spinning. Lots of great ideas for dyeing and keeping colours alive and easy instructions for newcomers to sock knitting. It has my recommendation anytime.

Book Description
Adapting basic sweater patterns for personal preferences and measurements is the focus of this step-by-step guidebook that helps knitters refashion knitting schematics. The designs, illustrations, and photos demonstrate how to adjust patterns to different styles so that any knitter can customize sweater patterns into unique creations. Challenging projects—ranging from sweaters and vests to pullovers and jackets—and easy-to-follow instructions illustrate the basic elements of sweater design to inspire knitters at all levels. Learning how to fit the bodice; change yarns, proportions, neckline styles, sleeve length, and color and stitch patterns; and add collars and edgings will give knitters the confidence to alter any pattern to meet their needs.

Twisted Sisters Works for Guys.......2007-10-03
As a guy I hesitated to buy this book at first because most of the styles are simple shapes designed for women, but as I read further I found so much information I needed to knit sweaters that fit my proportions. As I'm fairly muscular with a slim waist, I have a hard time finding patterns that do me justice. But I wanted to know how to design form fitting knits too. Then someone turned me on to Vogel's Fit Central blog where she goes the extra mile to explain how to design fitted torsos and sleeves. Now all I need is yarn and needles. Thanks Twisted Sisters.
Wonderful Book!.......2007-09-27
Lynne Vogel is an outstanding teacher. Several years ago I came across Lynne's first book, :The Twisted Sisters Sock Workbook: Dyeing, Painting, Spinning, Designing, Knitting. I was delighted with the Sock Workbook and it gave me the courage to try my first dying attempt (Kool Aid) and my first knitted socks. Then this summer, I took her workshop in Harrisville, NH. It was five days of new experiences, new skills, and learning new ways to use color in my spinning and my knitting. It was also five days of pure fun, with a delightful group of women. I bought the new sweater book from Lynne, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves to knit. She is an inspiration. Thanks, Lynne. Keep up the good work!
Knitting for big sizes.......2007-09-17
I found nothing that I could knit for slim people who want to show their figure. Nothing ranglan, nothing fitted, all large lumpy knitted clothes for those who want to hide inside. However, good cable instructions for knitting beginners.
Just what I wanted.......2007-09-09
AS a new spinner I am accumulating lots of homespun wool and wanted to know how to adjust patterns to be able to kit it all up. The twisted sisters do just this in this book. There are a number of patterns but the bulk of the book instructs you in how to make a variety of sweaters to perfectly fit anyone you want to kit for with whatever wool you happen to have or have spun.
Boxy fitted knits?.......2007-08-21
I was interested in this book because it talks about working sweaters to your own size. But the sweaters in this book, although beautifully coloured and so on, are all shapeless and boxy. Definitely not my style.

Another gem from this wonderful author!.......2005-09-19
Wonderful rhymes and storyline! My 4 year old loves this book! It is rather lengthy, which is wonderful, because we read some the first night, more the next night and finish up the third night! She can't wait for storytime each night so we can pick up where we left off and find out what happens next with the three sistahs! Beautifully illustrated and wonderful storylines. Magnificent!
Love this book!.......2005-07-12
This book absolutely tickles my fancy. The humor makes me laugh out loud and the illustrations are fabulous. A Halloween tradition from now on.
Too long for a 4 year old.......2004-11-23
We got this from his grandma and I was excited because it was the same illustrator as Miss Fiona's Stupendous Pumpkin Pies - the pictures are fun in this book too, but the story is just too long. I've tried to sit down and read it to him several times, but it's just too advanced (and long) for him - and I consider him very advanced in the types of books he likes to read, but this one absolutely bores him. Hopefully someday we'll be able to finish it, because I'd like to know what happens too! (it is a bit long and drawn out with big words and even I get a little tired of all the verbage).

Twisted Sisters.......1999-12-04
Sadly, this amazing, mind-expanding collection of work is out of print--it shouldn't be. I first came across this book in college, and never in my life had I seen such a funny, audacious, shocking, honest and passionate collection of work--especially by female cartoonists. For those of you who think female-oriented cartoons means "Cathy", this is a must-read. True-blue underground work that could put R. Crumb to shame--the "bad-girl art" in the title isn't an exaggeration. Some of the greatest cartoonists today come together in this volume--Mary Fleener, Carol Lay, Carol Tyler, Julie Doucet, Krystynne Kryttyre and more. I also recommend this for people who think comic books mean men in tights. Try to find this book! It'll knock you flat.

In the mid-1970s, disillusioned by the politics of the Wimmin's Comix Collective, Diane Noomin and Aline Kominsky-Crumb formed Twisted Sisters Comics, which featured women cartoonists. Now Noomin is back at it with her second Twisted Sisters book, Drawing the Line. This collection features new work by Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Dame Darcy, Mary Fleener, Carol Lay, Penny Moran Van Horn, Krystine Kryttre, Carol Tyler, Carol Swain, and Noomin herself. The artists cover subjects ranging from sex, personality problems, rape, and miscarriages to cannibalism and the virgin birth.

Book Description
From USA Today bestselling author Patricia Potter comes a riveting novel about a man who thought he'd escaped his criminal past, a woman who didn't know she had one, and the FBI agent who threatens to blow both their worlds apart.
Customer Reviews:
Solid action-suspense-romance.......2005-10-26
After 34 years, Samantha Carroll's life is put in a tailspin, when she is approached by a couple of shady characters and told that her father - her real father - wants to see her before he dies. This comes as news to her since the only father she ever knew died two years earlier. Turns out she has a twin brother and her mother fled from her mobster father in a "Sophie's Choice" scenario whereby she sacrifices one child for the other. At least that is what the reader is led to believe early on.
Nick Merritt has done everything he can to distance himself from his mobster father Paul Merritta, including changing his surname. But he cannot escape his father's reach or that of a very determined FBI agent, Nathan McLean. He is shocked to learn about Sam and their mother.
After reluctantly flying to Boston to meet the family, she and Nick form a bond, and he is in full protection big brother mode. She also captures the attention of a very smitten Nathan. When Paul dies, an attempt is made on her life, and Nick acts as a human shield to protect her, and is forced to thank his nemesis, Nathan when Nathan pulls him and Sam from a burning car. As the two battle to protect her, she flees back to the relative safety of her Colorado gallery, wanting nothing to do with her birth father or his estate, where her world is no longer the same, and safety as she knows it is in the past.
Now her mother is missing, attempts have been made on her life, and she soon learns that there is a contract on her and her mother. Nathan pledges to protect her, as they try to solve the mystery of where her mother is and what kept her fleeing for 34 years.
Plenty of action and romance to keep the fast paced story moving along, though a potential romance for Nick is not fully realized (thus a missed opportunity).
I couldn't put it down.......2003-11-07
It's a rare day that I read a book that I can't put down and can't skip any words. I read every word on every page. Great story.
Dumb decision making in order to stay clear of bad guys.......2003-05-11
I didn't like this book very much. I tried. I like much of the old Patricia Potter books, but this era isn't makeing the grade. There were so many repetive thoughts of whether the phone being bugged, people diving in front of others to "save" them, oh my goodness a horse being shot ( I have four horses so it was just how the event was overwritten), making dumb mistakes when there are bad guys out trying, maybe, kinda trying to kill people. If the author took out the references to the above the book would have been much shorter.
There was too much telling and convincing words instead of a real story. Save your hard earned money for a better book.
People Aren't Always Who They Seem.......2003-02-19
Samantha Carroll receives a very unexpected visit from two very menacing men. They insist her real father wasn't the man she thought him to be, but instead is crime boss Nicholas Meritta who is dying and after 34 years wants to see her. Not only that, but she has a twin brother that she didn't know existed. After confronting her mother she learns all of this is true. Samantha decides to meet her brother and her biological father against her mother's better judgement. Enter Agent Nathan McLean, and let the fun begin.
This novel is fast paced, and will have no trouble keeping your attention. There is of course a whirl-wind romance as is Ms. Potter's trade mark. I am usually a big fan of her historical romances, but wasxn't dissapointed on reading this novel. Twisted Shadows shows all of the talent Ms. Potter has.
delightful romantic suspense.......2003-01-18
In Steamboat Springs, Colorado, two unsavory individuals visit Samantha Carroll at her Western Wonders Art Gallery. They insist her real father crime boss Nicholas Merlitta is dying and wants to see her for the first time since her mother fled Boston with her over three decades ago. Samantha believes her father David died two years ago though they insist otherwise and also inform her that she has a twin brother. Samantha confronts her mother Tracy who admits that she is the daughter of Nicholas.
Samantha decides to meet her brother and her biological father. Meanwhile, FBI Special Agent Nate McLean is stunned to learn that Merlitta's wife and daughter lives. He decides to use Samantha to get at Nick, Jr. who he thinks is laundering money. Nate seeks revenge for the shooting death of his mother by the Merlitta mob. However, he never thought he would fall in love with someone who shares the blood of his enemy yet now risks his life to keep her safe from an unknown assailant perhaps her twin.
Fans of romantic suspense will enjoy the fast-paced TWISTED SHADOWS. The story line starts at quite a clip as Tracy holding two eight month old infants flees the mob though there seems a disconnect since she ended with one child and her spouse the other (explained somewhat much later). Nate is an obsessed agent whose dreams are on the verge of coming true when love twists his equilibrium for living. Samantha is a brave and wonderful individual while the support cast provides depth leading to TWISTED SHADOW captivating the audience.

entertaining but strange combo police procedural psychological thriller.......2007-10-19
In Santa Barbara, California, the first victim was Jake Higgins whose penis was cut off. At the Santa Barbara Community Hospital, Nurse Alisha Telford looks at the corpse and recognizes him as the man who raped her when she was sixteen. Her present boyfriend, Police Detective Joe Morsen and his partner Quinn Anderson lead the official investigation. However, when Joe observes Alisha looking strangely at the body of Higgins, he wonders what is going on until suddenly he suffers a heart attack in front of her; she takes her time before calling for help and Joe dies.
The second victim is a wife abuser whose spouse is friends of Alisha and her best buddy Kelsey, whose boyfriend is Quinn. As he sees the obvious connection between the two victims beyond the physical slicing off of their precious jewel, he wonders if either Alisha, Kelsey or an associate of both from the Women Against Violence group has a literal ax to grind with men.
TWISTED SISTER is an entertaining but strange combo police procedural psychological thriller. The fast-paced story line grips the reader from the opening moment when the fatale assaults Higgins and never slows down until the final slice is served. Although readers know the identity of the killer early on (and so should Quinn), fans (males may feel squeamish with a killer providing "penectomy" services) will appreciate this exciting suspense filled tale as a serial killing avenger castrates male predators.
