Henry Miller's collaboration with the Obelisk press in the 1930s produced three phenomenal works still much-loved to this day. The groundbreaking Tropic of Cancer published by Jack Kahane in 1934 after Anais Nin helped cover costs, its followup Tropic of Capricorn, finally printed in 1939, and Black Spring, a collection of vignettes and tales from 1936. These three works, later republished by the Olympia Press in Paris announced the arrival of a bold, pugilistic, voice on the literary scene, one whose artistic roar echos to this day.

Get The Revised Edition.......2005-04-19
Took a chance on the ebook, as the title is ridiculously cheap.
Message at the front says "Revised, March 2005"--so if you're getting it from a marketplace seller or something, be sure they have the right version.
I can remember first picking up a paperbound trilogy by Mr. Miller some 20 years, an old Grove PB from the '60s. Loved it, and it keeps speaking to me to this very day.
Four stars because the text is marked up in the French manner, and it can be a little hard to deal with all the angle quotes and such.
Did buy the paperback as well, and love carrying all three around with me.
Wonderful Read--Publisher needs a copyeditor.......2005-02-12
The collection of three of Miller's greatest works in volume looked too good to be true. It was. Miller's great, brusque voice is here, but the production quality of the volume is very low. The text contains far too many errors, as if it were transcribed with no proofread prior to press. Buy another edition from a more reputable company.

More than just the basics.......2007-09-30
Reading the other reviews I felt it was important to offer another perspective. While I haven't given public speeches, when it comes to my own body I'm an expert. I've spent more time with it than anyone else and over the years have learned quite a few things that I'm sorry to say I don't have techical terms for. Just what I know.
This book and "The ESO Ecstasy Program" (the first book I read when it first came out), might give certain impressions to a casual reader. But the working beauty of this program is when it is put into practice.
And I don't mean towel exercises. To limit these books that way is like saying diet pills work or don't work. Only a comprehensive diet and exercise program with monitoring by a health professional (like your Doctor) can do that. This is the same thing to me. The book (a professional on paper) is nothing without practicing the art itself.
I found the book focused more on communication techniques (lacking in most relationships - talking about our inner thoughts and understanding them doesn't come naturally for everyone) than exercises but putting those into practice with communication and time produces results.
Not fanciful results either. The descriptions of what is possible in the books comes from years of practice between the two authors. While it's possible to follow the program and see outstanding results in 30 days (the new editions timeframe, the original book it was 90) as well.
I always recommend this book along with "The Lover Within" by Julie Henderson, for anyone in a long term relationship that wants everything possible from it - not just what you see and hear about on TV.
As a tool for taking that next step in intimacy I've not found a better resource. It's not for the casual reader, nor have I found much success sharing with short term partners.
Good stuff. Just because it sounds amazing doesn't mean it's not. :)
A must read for all men!.......2007-01-09
This is one of the best technical manuals that detail the intricacies of sexual pleasure. It effectively addresses the methods of pleasing women, who are complicated by nature. It also focuses on the entire environment that impacts a couple's receptiveness to experiencing sexual intimacy by providing tools to increase and facilitate communication. Each time I loan this book to friends, it is NEVER returned! That is the most significant statement I can make about what others think about its content!
Useful and informative, review by personal growth coach.......2006-10-21
I have a good background in biology, psychology and biochemistry. I do public speaking on a variety of topics and personal growth coaching in several areas including human sexuality. I have read a lot of books in my areas of expertise and many of these have been in the areas of evolutionary psychology, sexuality and relationship. Some of these have been academic and others have been of a lighter nature.
This book fits into the category of a light read on a topic that is important to everyone i.e. sexual satisfaction and achieving satisfying orgasms. While I found that this book had some exaggerated claims, it also had a lot of good information that was well presented.
This book is particularly useful for women who have difficulty achieving orgasm, but it is interesting for me as well. It really does include a lot of good tips for making your orgasms more powerful. However, it doesn't focus much on the intimacy aspects of relationship.
I personally believe that the biggest aphrodisiac is genuine love, compassion and high regard for our partner. As long as this book does not become an end in itself or a substitute for intimacy, I think you will find it useful and informative.
Lubricants.......2005-10-11
The one thing that I came away with in this book, that was very useful, was "Albolene". It is absolutely the finest lubricant in the world. Get the unscented kind as suggested in the book. The rest of the book, is indeed, really only good for women. But Albolene is great for everyone! Get it from your local store.
Male Readers Beware: ESO is for Women Only.......2004-02-20
As the other reviewers implicitly note, with comments such as:
"I have used it on past girlfriends and taken them to places they didn't know their own bodies could take them. Complete loss of time and place while wave after wave of deep slow contractions went on for 1-2 or more hours. I've given it as a gift to some of my male friends and they had the same results with their wives/girlfriends."
This book, which devotes EQUAL attention to female and male extended orgasm is playing a cruel joke on men because, unless a man has the control of a zen master (read between the lines of this book), he WILL NEVER experience extended sexual orgasm. The book ups the ante for men -- once again, we have to work harder and harder to please women as they scale their orgasmic Olympuses, experiencing mind-blowing delights that men cannot experience. I have NEVER met a man who actually experienced true ESO.
After reading this book, a male reader is left with the depressing feeling that sexually speaking it sucks being a man: NO true multiple orgasms, always "holding back," no extended orgasms, orgasms that grow weaker with age, etc.
Please Drs. Brauers, tell the truth: What is the ratio of women versus men achieving ESO, 1,000:1?

smazing.......2007-04-27
Truesight is an amazing si-fi fictional book. The story begins with Jacob a 13 year old boy who is blind. He lives in harmony a town full of blind people. They fear the seers(people who can see)because they are different. They use a machine called a truesight. They give off a pitch that people use to find where they're going and where people are. Jacob starts to get major headachs that affect his eyes. when he figures out that he is getting sight he freaks out. Trying to act natural he has to figure out a plan on what to do.
truesight.......2007-04-27
truesight is an outstanding book about a 12 year old boy named jacob who is blind. He lives in a town called harmony. The town is full of of blind people who fear the seers (people who can see and arn't blind). They use a device called a sounder to find there way and to hear other peoples sounders to move around. Jacob has a hard time when he starts to get headachs. as the story progresses jacob learns that his headachs are giving him sight. so nobody finds out he just acts natural.
Tumbs up!.......2006-08-11
Truesight is one of the better sci-fi books, not that I've read many! Even if you're just interested in the history of blindness, I'd recommend reading this. Jacob is a realistic 12 year old boy, which with many can relate to. He's not particulary brave, which is a challenge to him when he's faced with his biggest burden of all- starting with minor headaches and turning into something extraordinary. Two thumbs up, all the way, and if you're 11 years or older, but this and enjoy reading!
Truesight.......2006-06-28
Fantasy and science fiction often get so caught up in trying to explain the world in which the story takes place -- characters and setting are so key to the expository information within the novel -- that the plot suffers in the first half of the book.
TRUESIGHT is a sci-fi young adult novel that does some of that suffering (or rather the readers do). The entire first section of the book has a problem with trying to make the reader see this world (no pun intended) in which everyone is blind, but...
...as our protagonist (a 13-year-old boy named Jacob) starts to develop sight, we start to develop more interest in what happens. Eventually, the plot takes over from the exposition and things start to move along wonderfully.
As an 8th-grade Language Arts teacher, I also notice that the second half (clearly labeled "Part Two") has a better vocabulary, moving the material up a couple of reading levels as it goes. I also appreciated the metaphor I detected about conformity (whether religious, political or societal). I am teaching a unit on "Conformity" this year and will incorporate discussion of TRUESIGHT into this with (hopefully) strong results.
Though it is the first in a trilogy, each book should stand on its own. Younger readers will hate the ending as it doesn't answer all the questions it has set up for the reader.
What prevents the book from receiving three stars (instead of four) is the way that it transforms itself in the second half into an enjoyable example of the genre. What prevents itself from getting a full five is its growing pains in the first eighty pages.
Best Sci - Fi Novel Ever!!!!.......2006-06-01
This was an amazing book! It's about a boy named Jacob who lives in a colony of people who genetically engineered themselves to be blind. They believe that blindness brings purity and innoscence. They live by the philosophy of Truesight. It states that sight brings shallow and materialistic lives.Something strange starts happening to Jacob a normal 13-year-old boy.He starts having headaches and feeling sick. Read the book to find out what this all means.
Book Description
Young Jacob Manford grew up in Harmony, a blind boy raised in a colony of citizens dedicated to blindness as a way of life. Stricken with sight at thirteen, he escapes to the futuristic city of Melville, only to discover he has traded one hostile community for another.
Jacob's sight introduces him to a thrilling new world—vast landscapes, glittering skyscrapers, and flying machines—but he is unsure if he has finally found a place to belong. Will Jacob ever find what he is looking for?

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-08-08
Jacob grew up in Harmony, a city populated entirely by blind people. In the previous story (Truesight) Jacob was forced to leave Harmony. Because Jacob can see. After being ostracized by the only family and community he had ever known, and observing firsthand the treachery of the man in charge, Jacob fled to the unknown. Which is where THE SEER picks up.
Jacob wasn't completely prepared for his journey. He is traveling on foot through foreign areas, it's been days since he's eaten or drank anything, and he's heading towards a place he was raised to dislike. Jacob is beginning to doubt the wisdom of leaving Harmony, even if he is a fugitive.
He is "rescued" by Xander. Xander lives alone outside of the city and the painful memories that live there. In a way they are both attempting to escape their pasts. Perhaps that is why Xander is willing to help Jacob, in his own gruff way.
Jacob has a mission. His friend, Delaney, was banished from Harmony by her own father. She traveled the same roads as Jacob, without the benefits of sight. Jacob feels driven to find his friend.
Finding her turns out to be easy. Getting to her? Well, that's another story entirely. Jacob and Xander are going to have to rely on and trust each other, and that's just the beginning.
In addition to being a great, intelligent, futuristic adventure, there are real characters with good stories. And it's just a really interesting concept. To start with, there's a city where being blind is the only way. Even though Jacob didn't fit in there, it's still comforting because it was a place he knew. Add in a girl who should have fit in there, but didn't. A man who can't seem to find any place where he fits. And some people who will try to make everybody fit into what they want them to be.
Sometimes what you think you want isn't really what you want at all.

Keeping Spirituality Simple.......2000-06-26
This book has done for spiritual guidance what few others have done -- keep the pathway simple. Having read many books dealing with the inherent but too often untapped power that dwells within every human being, I credit author Ferrini with the ability to bring that power into understanding. Usually I'm hesitant to use the word "surrender" as readily as he does, but in the context presented it makes complete sense and I find it accceptable. Persons familiar with the complext "Course in Miracles" -- that mainstay of many New Thought religious studies -- will find Grace Unfolding an easier approach to some of the Miracles concepts. Although the book is short and can be a quick read, its chapters should be absorbed slowly and thoughtfully -- there's much more savor and understanding than first meets the eye and mind!

Great Book for the Beginner and Expert Alike!.......2004-07-28
This book has many, many recipes that can inspire even the most seasoned winemaker, yet it is simple enough for the beginner. A must-have, in my opinion.
Too brief to give the beginner any confidence.......2003-02-11
The book is essentially divided into two sections. The first covers the basic principles of wine making: the science behind it, the key ingredients, and the necessary tools and techniques. The second half is a pretty substantial list of recipes, concentrating heavily on country wines.
Sadly, the coverage of the principles and techniques was too brief, particularly with regard to timing. I am still at a bit of a loss as to how long one should allow the aerobic ferment to take place, how long for the anaerobic format and so on. I think I'll be getting another book that focuses more on technique before I make my first attempt.
This classic guided three generations from crop to wine........1998-06-18
C.J.J. Berry is a legend to winemaking hobbiests worldwide as the man who had a winemaking recipe for just about any ingredient. For literally tens of thousands of home winemakers, this is the only reference book they ever had or needed.
When it first appeared, the layout of "First Steps in Winemaking" was quite unique. After an admirable discussion of the basic principles of home winemaking, Berry then presented his recipes on the basis of the month in which the principal ingredients are readily available at market or are typically harvested in the British home garden. There are three things wrong with this format.
Firstly, citing harvest months for various ingredients geographically limits the accuracy of the format. Harvest times for any crop will vary greatly around the world, but they can differ from Britain's calendar by six months for gardeners in, say, Australia. Berry's treatment works fine in the British Isles and many other places, but certainly this is not universally so. In his later books, Berry abandoned the calendar-month format of "First Steps...."
Secondly, at least in developed countries, there is no longer a need to be tied to calendar-month availability of ingredients. Advances in cargo transport and refrigeration over the past 50 years have made dependency on local crops a thing of the past. Almost any ingredient can be found in the modern supermarket or produce center at any time.
Thirdly, Berry's presentation of recipes by month results in dependence on the index in order to find recipes for a particular ingredient. This is perhaps the greatest shortcoming of the book's layout. An alphabetical listing of recipes, as he used in subsequent books, would have been more convenient.
In defense of the author, however, I must point out that Berry never anticipated his book would have worldwide appeal. Nor, it would seem, that it would remain popular for so long. Certainly he would not have quoted prices for ingredients and supplies had he suspected as much.
Are these shortcomings fatal? Not in the least! This is still the classic reference to the subject and ought to be in every winemaker's library. Indeed, if you could only buy one book on the subject, only Terry Garey's "The Joy of Home Winemaking" could challenge "First Steps...." to a coin toss.
Buy it. Read it. Make wine. You'll love yourself for it.

REVIEW: This book was inspired by a visit to the Homer Laughlin Factory in Newell, West Virginia, by the author. For the casual collector of Homer Laughlin China, this book will show the evolution of the Homer Laughlin designs throughout the years. For the serious collector and dealer, this book is a great reference manual which can assist in the identification of different shapes and decorative patterns. It especially assists in differentiating between shapes which closely resemble one another.

An Illustrated Value Guide to Cookie Jars by E. Westfall.......2001-03-01
This book is a nice size and weight to carry around. However, I am bothered by the way the cookie jars are valued. The author states that she lists "what I have paid for jars or seen on them" but never mentions the dates or places spotted or purchased! There are more accurate ways to measure the selling prices of such collectibles. Of course, an object is only really worth what one is willing to pay. It's a handy book and cheap, but I would just say beware that it is very inexpertly written. In my humble opinion!

Most Americans are pack rats, and Mary Emmerling seems to be no exception, but she knows how to make it look chic. Emmerling's specialty is a quintessential American country look: light fabrics, Western knickknacks, Navajo rugs, sunflowers, seashells, and gingham. The great thing about Emmerling's style is that it's flexible--when summer comes, you change the damask drapes to canvas tab curtains, put out some new pillows with mattress-ticking stripes, and--voilà!--you've got the beach cottage look. Every possession becomes decorating fodder: you can use nice, old chairs as end tables, house your videos and CDs in wicker baskets, or keep your spices in a test-tube rack. The division of the book into decorating periods of 5, 15, and 30 minutes (as well as "1 Hour to an Afternoon") is a bit odd and arbitrary, but the ideas are interesting and the look is great, especially for people with a lot of stuff.

Timeless cottage decorating.......2007-08-23
This will be one the books you constantly reach for when you need inspiration. It is one of my favorites - it will probably become one of yours too. And it's all so do-able - even with thrift store, garage/estate sales and antique store finds.
Old-fashioned country looks for your home.......2007-06-04
I bought this book in the late 1990's.
I still browse through it today, and this book does hold up,even now.
The chapters are easily categorized by styles & ideas. The photos are wonderful!
If you're familiar with COUNTRY HOME MAGAZINE or Mary Emmerling's style, then you'll like the format & ideas in this book.
Somebody else described the style of this book as "rustic", and I agree.
NOTE: If you're expecting "shabby chic" or "minimalist" country style, then this book is not for you.
But , if you love the "naturally" rustic look of the older country styles, then you'll love this book
For the love of rustic.......2006-11-09
This book is a real winner for those who love rustic, casual but sophisticated rooms. There is a lot of Southwestern decor here but you can apply a lot of what Mary Emmerling is showing without going that far. I think of it as introducing some Native American culture into my spaces and that is so earthy, colorful and rich. Her textiles and textures are very inspiring. This is my favorite decorating book! Just about every page is a hit with me.
Inspiration generation.......2004-02-09
I have a shelf full of "country" decorating books, but this is the one I pick up most often when I worry that things around here have been the same for too long. It's full of little ideas that can make it look as if you have spent longer re-vamping than you have done. Some of the suggestions are more long term and perhaps Mary shouldn't try to catagorise them as "quick" projects, but she has loads of quick ideas to perk up rooms around the house.
Buy it for the inspiration it generates - for the beautiful photography and the concept that you don't have to do much to make a difference to the look of your home.
Fantastic Book - full of inspiration!.......1998-10-14
I loved this book! The many different styles covered by Mary (everything from Southwestern to Shabby Chic) was my initial reason for purchasing Quick Decorating. Also, this book is filled with many examples for placing and arranging ordinary items for an extraordinary look! I refer to this book often for inspiration and loan it to friends when they are in need of some too!

The shape of things to come.......2001-06-12
"Next" is a prime example of what should be considered the design that will take us into the coming millenium. Inspirational, and informative it shows us the work and tells about the process behind the scene. As an illustrator I love the fact that Mr. Reyes includes comments by, and work by Illustrators. From lables to posters, "Next " is an insightful look at current design.
A great book.......2001-06-02
I found Next to be a great book on contemporary graphic design, essential in representing an aesthetic that is generally under-represented in most other design annuals and survey books. The author, who's won numerous awards in his professional career, has done his research: he presents designers who are NOT the dozen or so "usual suspects" or "name" designers over-represented in most other books. The book is also less New-York-centric, though not exclusionary, than a lot of other books of its kind.
An intriguing and essential look at a new generation of designers.
Cool and inspiring.......2001-05-31
As a magazine art director, I found this book filled with cool and inspiring examples of graphic art and design. There is a broad range of styles and approaches and great work from people I was not previously familiar with. ... I found the author's own work to be strong and provocative. My only complaint is with the title, Next. Graphic design is a rapidly evolving field stylistically, and this book is less a look at the future and more of a contemporary snapshot of a vibrant group of artists. But that does not diminish from the power and impact of this collection.
it's called "personal style".......2001-05-30
I bought this book recently because I used to follow Mr. Reyes' design, back when he was the designer of The Rocket, the Seattle music-related newspaper.
"Next" is a treat for me -- not only because I saw current work by people whose art I have long appreciated, but because Mr. Reyes offered a well-considered picture of how contemporary designers have evolved since the "D.I.Y" aesthetic of The Rocket.
A Waste of Money.......2001-05-19
Ever feel like you've been cheated? Anyone that knows anything about graphic design and thumbs through this book will instantly realize they have been duped by the title. "The New Generation in Graphic Design" would have been an appropriate title if this book had been published in 1985. With it's emphasis on "Grunge Design" and lop-sided with designers from Seattle (and the authors own mediocre work) this book hardly represents anything new but, rather, outdated and boring design. Wake up Mr. Reyes, it's 2001.
