Book Description
A dazzling collection of stories, The Prophet of Zongo Street takes readers to a world that seamlessly blends African folklore and myths with modernity. Set primarily on Zongo Street, a fictitious community in West Africa, the stories -- which are reminiscent of the works of Ben Okri and Amos Tutuola -- introduce us to wonderfully quirky characters and the most uproarious, poignant, and rawest moments of life. There's Kumi, the enigmatic title character who teaches a young boy to finally ask questions of his traditions. And as Ali moves his characters to America we meet Felix, who struggles with America's love of the exotic in "Rachmaninov."
The Prophet of Zongo Street heralds a new voice and showcases Mohammed Naseehu Ali's extraordinary ability to craft stories that are both allegorical and unforgettable.

Fine Tales Set In Ghana and Brooklyn/Bronx/Long Island !!.......2005-10-02
Needless to say, my favorites were the ones set in or near Zongo Street, in the West African nation of Ghana (formerly Gold Coast). Here we meet a bizarre assortment of thieves, prophets, bullies, tea store owners and their overweight wives, taxi drivers, ghost masquesaders, and many others, including many not much different than you and me. All these tales are beautifully done and just about perfect, and there is some of the zaniest humor you will ever encounter. So, for some really different world literature, why not press the button, and order this collection right now?!
Capivating in words as he is in spirit.......2005-08-16
Mohammed Naseehu Ali's gift is to be captivating. I have walked Zongo Street. Mo, thank you for guiding me there. I knew you as a wizard of the drum, I have found you to be a magician of the pen. Your pen dishes out phenomenal images with which I have never before been infused. Your talents continue to astound and impress me. Your real gift is the gift of yourself that you share so candidly. The Prophet of Zongo Street is delicious. Thank you.
Now, where can I hear you play again? Will you be drumming at your book signings?
Book Description
He saw "the most beautiful woman in the entire world, nay, the most beautiful creature in all existence" standing behind the desk of his local public library, and he nearly fainted. It wasn't that he thought librarians were supposed to be frumpy. It was the fact that in his town you never saw a new face, much less the face of "the most beautiful woman in the whole universe." "How I Fell in Love with a Librarian and Lived to Tell About it" starts with a bang and gathers speed as the story progresses. Filled with romance, mystery, and adventure, every chapter brings unexpected twists to keep the reader guessing to the end.
Customer Reviews:
There's an high-speed chase in this book............2007-09-10
Well, sorta....it's a charming romance which draws an interesting line between those who read and .....those who won't. There's a great deal of humor and good nature and just plain fun.
Lotsa fun.......2006-05-20
I read this book in one sitting - it was that much fun. And it's more than a romance because of the subplots.
Libraries will live on...There will be many cases when a physical book is needed. Local history cannot be done on line - believe me, I've tried. And besides, a lot of people don't have computers. THEY USE THE COMPUTERS AT THE LIBRARY!
I love the pro-library aspects of this book.
Excellent. Important........2006-03-11
This is an excellent book, a very fun, enjoyable story about a small town man's crush on the new librarian, who just happens to be the "the most beautiful creature in all existence." The way he describes her is awesome. There's one line that goes something like "She could whip Helen of Troy in a beauty pageant any day of the week." He finally gets to know her and learns that despite her great beauty and intelligence, she is human just like anyone else with her own weaknesses and problems. "Human"-- that's a good word to described the entire story.
Not only did I enjoy it as a wonderful love story, I thought it was important for libraries. One of the sub-plots was about a local politician's attempt to have the library closed. The good people of the town rallied around it though, led by the man who loved his librarian-- her knight in shining armor, even if he was a bit goofy. We must remind ourselves that libraries are important. This book really should be placed on the front shelf of every library.
Libraries are essential to all people, especially those in lower income brackets!.......2005-12-04
OK, this is a rebut to some of the more inept reviewers here. Seriously people, can we TRY to be a little bit less classist? Former reviewers have said that its time to do away with libraries because most of the information is available on the internet or in electronic form. Even if that were the case, which it is NOT, what about the millions of people who don't have an internet connection or even a computer? Many thousands of people use my local library for internet access alone, not to mention those that use it for access to books they can't afford to buy. Not everyone can afford to buy every book they need or would like to read. Even if you happen to have a good internet connection the only books that are available for free are not new. What if I want to read the new Nick Bantock book? I have to buy it or go to a library. Or what if my kid needs to do a report on whales? Sure he can get a few of his sources from the net, but he has to have at least two print sources. If I'm in the low income bracket, it's not likely that I'm going to spend grocery money buying him those books. Apart from the physical NEED for libraries, there is also the societal need to support free learning. Libraries are hubs for adult and child literacy programs, political party meeting places, adult career learning programs and so much more. In a society where so little is free and education is often highly undervalued and available to the privileged classes, shouldn't there be a place where people can go to better themselves? So no people, why don't you grow up and realize that not everyone has the money to buy all the books the want or need and access to the "vast web of information" you have such faith in.
Having gotten this out of my system I'm free to actually -review- the book. I found it delightful and very romantic. Its well written and a quick read. I would highly recommend it for some nice weekend light reading.
Awesome Book! Libraries VITAL!.......2005-07-25
Libraries are VITAL at this time! Don't listen to the nay-sayers. I read one or two books a week, and I depend on the regional library system for that. This book, while it is probably one of the most pro-library books on the market, does not read like propaganda. It's just an exciting love story by an author who apparently loves libraries as much as he loves a good tale. I love this book. It's a feel good read. The plot held my attention firmly. Don't listen to those who oppose our treasured libraries. Oh, and it is NOT a short story. It's over a hundred pages long. Like one reviewer said, this book should be on the front display shelf of every library, so if you get a copy (this paperback edition is a bargain) be sure to donate it to your local library.

Book Description
A classic guide for the study, practice and realization of Buddhist teachings.
Customer Reviews:
Compelling.......2006-03-26
A great supplement for meditators on the Buddhist Path; goes into depth and detail of all the essential topics. Many of the stories and examples given are from within the Tibetan culture during an earlier age and may be hard for westerners to believe, but the essential meaning of the teachings are as relevent today as they were then; the stories and examples from Tibetan life are nevertheless still interesting and reveal a society of immense faith and devotion.
Tibet's Heidegger.......2005-10-03
Pabongka's influence is still being felt today. His philosophical genius is unquestioned. (The loving reviews of his work below should be taken at face value.) As remains the case with Heidegger, there remains some controversy over Pabongka's politics relative to his teaching.
Chagdud Tulku gives some insight into Pabongka's legacy in his book Lord of the Dance (see especially page 107).
Incredible Treasure Trove of Teachings.......2004-07-26
This book intimidated me at first -- it's so large! And such a long teaching just on Lam Rim? However, the instant I started reading it, I was hooked in, and I've been at it non-stop ever since. I can safely say that no other book has provided me with as many eye-opening realizations as this one. Every few pages strikes a chord in me and helps me to understand on a deeper level the many aspects and facets of Lam Rim.
What is Lam Rim? It is "Stages of the Path" -- one of the central kinds of teachings in Tibetan Buddhism. In Buddhism, the goal is enlightenment -- to free oneself from suffering, and to help others free themselves as well. Yet the teachings of the Buddha are so voluminous and complex, that it is difficult for a beginning student to know where to start, what to study, what to practice, in what order, etc. For this reason, the great Indian master Atisha (10th-11th c.AD) composed the first Lam Rim text, which presented the entire path to Buddhahood, leaving nothing out, in a clear way, and in the correct order for practice. Since then, Lam Rim teachings have been central for most Tibetan schools of Buddhism. This systematic and clear approach is not found in most other schools of Buddhism.
In Lam Rim, one develops realizations along 3 major stages: Small Scope, Medium Scope, and Great Scope. In the first two, one develops a strong wish to free oneself from present and future sufferings, to achieve a state of total liberation and peace. In the third, one expands this through compassion to wish that all sentient beings may be in this liberated state.
Each stage involves contemplating and thinking about a number of different aspects of life and human experience. As one does so, one is almost guaranteed to start to see things more clearly. This will lead to a stronger wish for liberation, a more powerful compassion, and greater wisdom into the nature of reality. Thus, Lam Rim is really essential, especially for those who intend to practice Tantra, since it is like the base and foundation.
While there are many texts of Lam Rim, Pabongka Rinpoche's teaching is so direct, so clear, and filled with so many brilliant examples and stories, that it can be ranked among the best. In the Gelukpa school especially, it has become a classic that every student should read at least once. I hope it will benefit you greatly!
Most Auspicious.......2004-01-17
This is an excellent book, an excellent set of instructions for a serious practicioner of the dharma. While a meditation retreat is preferrable, this book is second best as a great teaching of Je Tsongkapa's Lam Rim.
If you are an honest Buddhist practicioner, this book will not disappoint you. It will provide you with most beneficial instructions for your practice and study of the Lam Rim, including an excellent and extensive section on the Preparatory Rites. I recommend this dharma text, in fact, I would call it essential.
Your hearnest study of this book should benefit all sentient beings.
Om mani padme hum.
Be well.
Essential.......2002-01-07
A stong understanding of Lam Rim is very important, it is the foundation of Tibetan buddhism. This book on Lam-Rim is essential, it is the published notes from a teaching of Pabongka Rinpoche out lining the steps to/on the Lam Rim path. Anyone interested studing buddhism will benefit from the teachings of Rinpoche.

Customer Reviews:
Simple but informative.......2005-09-30
This coloring book packs a double wallop. It is both informative and entertaining. I would recommend it to children and adults of all ages who are interested a in short, simple, understandable, and fun lesson about Navajo traditions and blankets.
Well Done!.......2002-06-28
"Navajo Rugs and Blankets: A Coloring Book" is an excellent supplement to children's books about Navajo weaving. The first section in this book introduces the Navajo world and historical information about the significance of their woven rugs. All of these introductory pages have a few sentences of text with related pictures to color. The rest of the book is coloring pages of individual rug patterns, which were often named for the region of their origin. The pattern names are given with color suggestions. The pictures of the rugs are informative for anyone (adults included) who want to see rug patterns in their most basic forms.
What I like most about this book is that the pictures are not overly simplified as a preschooler's basic coloring book, but are also not overly detailed. This book is just right for elementary children of all ages and any middle schooler who may still like a good coloring book. I have owned several copies of this book and have shared pages with elementary students and it has always been a hit for those quiet moments in the day!

Madagascar Wildlife, 2nd: A Visitor's Guide
ASIN: 0930741951 |
Book Description
Unwrapping the Textile Traditions of Madagascar presents the first extensive treatment of Madagascar's textile traditions region by region, giving a systematic overview of the woven products of each part of the country. It includes types of cloth that have previously been overlooked and explores contrasting uses and meanings among the highly varied cultures of the island. It also publishes for the first time many of the remarkable cloths from the collection assembled by Ralph Linton in 1926 and 1927 for the Field Museum.which represents perhaps as much as 50 percent of the textile heritage of Madagascar.
Beautiful color illustrations and scholarly commentary make this book useful for scholars, connoisseurs, and heritage-preservation experts, as well as weavers interested in reviving traditional techniques and designs.

place of textile garments in multicultural African society.......2005-03-29
As major Madagascar art forms, shawls, dresses, loose-fitting shirts, and also burial shrouds are "fundamental to an individual's ethnic, ideological, spiritual, social, political, and economic identities." These and similar garments have such a place because of the "ease with which cloth can be manipulated." Among some groups in Madagascar, textiles woven by hand and simple, age-old, tools are central in relations between the living and deceased ancestors with the changing of decayed burial shrouds for new ones. Eleven essays by authors with a surprisingly eclectic background--including college teachers in archaeology and ethnology, museum curators, a biologist, and a poet--focus on particular topics of this African island nation's textiles attracting wide notice because of their quality of production, colorfulness, and social significance. An island that has for centuries been a crossroads of trade and migrations from southern Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, Madagascar textiles are particularly complex and diverse; and because of this historical background, they have special meaning for the different groups of the society, as well as for interaction among groups. Textile traditions in different geographical areas, reviews of collections of textiles, the wear of textiles at social events, and the island's silk moths are among the topics. Numerous color photographs, some close-ups in which the weave of a garment can be seen, make for appreciation of the varied textiles; while other photographs exhibit inhabitants of Madagascar wearing the textiles in social activities or ceremonies.

Me and a Guy Named Elvis: My Lifelong Friendship with Elvis Presley
ASIN: 0525249028 |
Customer Reviews:
Please don't consider wasting your time.......2005-09-19
Earl Greenwood was no relation to Elvis nor was he an employee or press agent - his account of himself is a fabrication from start to finish. I'm not sure what is more appalling - that Greenwood/Tracy invented this book, or that the Library Journal (and David M. Turkalo) would publicly laud such a blatantly false work.
The Worst Book I have even Read.......2004-01-23
If you are not a big Elvis fan this is not the book to read because there is so many untruths in it, you will get the wrong impression of the man Elvis was. I have read a great number of books on Elvis and this one has to be the worst one. No one that knew Elvis even knows who this guys is??? He made numerous errors in telling his story. Such as he said Gladys, Elvis's mom went to Germany with him and then died in 1960!! Untrue - she died in 1958 before he left for Germany. He dated Dixie Locke before he made it big but was still dating her when he was signed to Sun Records. She did not break up with him because he asked her to marry him. They had talked of marriage but unforuntaely it did not last long because he was gone so much. He dated Anita before going to the army and for a while after he was discharged. He did not play in Vegas while he was making movies in the 1960s!!! And so on and so on. There are to many to mention here but I can say that this was a BIG DISSAPPOINTMENT and a waste of my money. DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON THE PIECE OF TRASH BELIEVE ME YOU WILL BE SORRY.
Not what I had hoped for.......2002-11-19
I've read many books on Elvis as I'm always trying to gain new information to help me understand his complex personality. I had high expectations for this offering because of its focus on Elvis' early life and relationship with his mother. However, I found the general tone of the book to be sensational. The sex "revelations" don't seem to be anything more than lurid details the like of which can be found in any tabloid. Everyone knows Elvis was a wonton womanizer. It's hardly news at this point. I found there to be many mistakes and inconsistancies throughout the book. One is so careless as to describe Elvis' first girlfriend, Dixie Locke, as a blond then two pages later she is in picture showing a girl with black hair. The whole thing just read like a trashy novel to me.
Zig-Zag Elvis.......2000-09-19
I read Mr. Greenwood's book and found it very informative and personal. The book takes the reader through Elvis' personal life and marriage and numberous love affairs. It depicts the Colonel's control over Elvis and possible black mail. It depicts how the people he was associated with over the years were mainly there for the gravy. An excellent book.
a wonderful and sympathetic portrayl of the Rock 'n' roll.......2000-01-21
EARL GREENWOOD PRIMARILY FOCUSES ON ELVIS' HUMBLE BEGINNINGS AND HIS TRAGIC CHILDHOOD FROM THE PERSPSCTIVE OF SOMEONE WHO KNEW THE FAMILY INTIMATLEY. GREENWOOD TELLS OF AN ELVIS WHO NOBDY REAALY KNEW, A BOY WHO WAS BULLIED AND RIDICULED AND WHO EVENTUALLY BECAME ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS ARTISTS IN HISTORY.
