Book Description

It's a steamy June afternoon in Louisiana, circa 1956, and Sissy LeBlanc is sitting on her front porch, wondering -- half seriously -- if she could kill herself with aspirins and Coca-Cola. She's been living in stifling old Gentry since the day she was born and trapped in a sham of a marriage to PeeWee LeBlanc since she was only seventeen. In short, she's fed up, restless, and ready for an adventure.

Sissy just never imagined temptation would come into her life that breathless summer day as she sat smoking on her porch swing. For although she may have been fixated on the taut muscles of the lineman shimmying down the telephone pole across the street, she hadn't allowed herself to imagine that he'd be none other than her high school sweetheart, Parker Davidson, who left town fourteen years before without so much as a wave good-bye. But suddenly, here he is, leaning in for a kiss that will stir up more excitement than Sissy could ever have imagined...

5 out of 5 stars A Good Summer Read!.......2007-08-07

This book is a fabulous vacation read! It's sassy and fun, but it also makes you appreciate the good life you have. Sissy should have been the model for her generation! Too bad more women back then didn't follow their hearts.....a great book all around, I would reccomend it to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Not a usual 5 star reviewer but this one deserved it!.......2007-06-07

I happened to be just looking for a light, summer read and was scanning the shelves in the library and came across this book. It sounded entertaining from the breif summary in the inside of the book so I thought "Why Not?'.
It starts out in the summer of '56 following the story of Sissy, a confident and fearless mother/woman/ wife who doesn't let anyone intimidate her. This attitude helps her realize from the start that perhaps she should start using this attitude towards her love life once she spots her old high school fling from way back. Immediatley, I expected the usual trite plot of woman having some sultry affair with her old ex-highschool lover but realized I was proven wrong. This whole book is unpredicatable and the best part was the fact it didn't just focus on Sissy but also interwove other lovable characters who remind you of people you know and their own subplots which somehow all tangle with each other. What the author does a magnificent job of is creating a story in a setting of a small town and not letting the reader in on which end of the web is going to come loose first.
The book and even the ending prove that this author is unconventional and a true master of literature. Her ability to constantly deliver different twists and angles throughout the book without resorting to conventional tactics while still managing to keep the story interesting and sensible is amazing. Most books I have read that have tried to not stick to the "usual" overused endings and devices end up losing the reader in the process by creating outcomes so unique that they seem out of character or don't go along with the rest of the plot.
Overall, I REALLY reccomend this book and feel that if you are looking for something with a little romance as well as humor, this is the book for you. It doesn't just focus on the romance at hand but shows the contextual setting as well as the reactions is creates and plots it effects as well. The whole effect of the story will leave you turning each page and showing your emotion in the end!!!! I LOVED IT!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A Roller Coaster of Twists and Turns.......2007-06-01

When I bought this book, I thought the entire book would be based on this torrid affair that an unhappily married woman was going to embark upon, but it really wasn't quite like that at all. There are so many surprises in this book, that I found myself reading it every chance I got....
This book is about dysfunctional families and relationships, and lost dreams, but it is enjoyable along the way. This is a great read. Oh if there really were men out there like Parker Davidson......

5 out of 5 stars Great Quick Read!.......2007-05-08

This book was a hit for me because I was looking for a quick pick-me-up and this was it!! Fast, funny, dysfunctional - it shows us that we can make mistakes and still land on top. Also, a key theme in this book is to keep trying. Sissy never gives up, although she has every right to. I found this book very entertaining, loved the "Southern Belle's Handbook" and I will DEFINATELY check out the author's other books, if only for the humerous escape and a light read.

3 out of 5 stars Summer all heated up.......2006-10-27

Sissy LeBlanc is a good hometown girl, mother of three, and faithful but terribly bored wife. She was raised to be a proper southern lady, but has always found that she was better suited to a lifestyle with a little bit of wild thrown in. And when her high school sweetheart returns to town after being away for 14 years Sissy finds a whole lot more wild that she bargained for. Her scandalous summer finds her searching for a balance between honoring her obligations, successfully raising her children, and still doing a little bit to satisfy herself. But no action in a small town goes unnoticed and before long her sinful secrets are known to all but her jealous husband. Sissy must decide whether she should follow society's expectations or her heart.

This book would definately fall into the "chick lit" category, but is light and fun. It does grapple with some weightier issues such as race and class, but for the most part is an entertaining romantic read. The end is a bit predictable and trite. It is the perfect book for a hot summer day and a glass of lemonade - particularly if Sissy has added a little bit of wild to the lemonade!

3 out of 5 stars Not up to par.......2007-09-20

I didn't think much of Kirsten in "The Husband She Can't Remember", because of the way she acted with Ben, her best friend's husband. The secret looks, whispered conversations and the incident at the DoJo. Unfortunately, my opinion of her didn't change in this book.

Questions: If Kirsten and Adam were together since they were 17, and their aborted wedding was 2 years ago, that would have made them 32 at the time. Why wait 15 years to get married?

She literally left Adam at the altar; in front of ½ the town. Did she leave him a note or anything?

Why didn't she just go to Adam instead of marrying Cowan and tell him what happened? She knew the Brands would make sure her father was protected no matter how they felt about her. Instead she humiliated Adam, lost the respect of his family and stuck her dad in a nursing home for two years. She threw her marriage and her wealth in Adam's face every chance she got.

When the Texas Rangers told her not to take a shower as she was covered in her husband's blood, and evidence, she was so arrogant that she did it anyway.

It made no sense for Adam to forgive her so easily, and end up apologizing to her because she was a liar. It wasn't what she did when she was practically a kid, although that was really awful, that was the worst but all the lies that came after. He apologized for not going after her two years ago when she married another man. Why would he?

Kirsten was not a likeable or honorable person. Only read this one if you're reading the series.

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic........2005-04-24

Book 6 in the "Texan Brands" series. Kirsten stood Adam Brand up at the altar 2 years ago. At long last we find out what really happened. The story is fantastic, a welcome addition to the series.

Next is "The outlaw bride", Elliot & Esmerelda's story. It is different from the norm as it is a time travel.

      5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2000-11-08

5 out of 5 stars Lovers are reunited in a murder mystery........1999-09-13

Contemporary romantic suspense General Setting: Modern Day Texas-- Two years before, Kirsten Cowan left Adam Brand standing at the altar while she married the richest and most hated man in town. Adam escaped to New York to forget Kirsten, and to make his fortune. Back in town, he is helping out his brother, Sheriff Garrett, when Kirsten calls. Adam doesn't want to stop hating Kirsten, but when she tells him she's standing in a room with her dead husband at her feet, the old protective feelings surface. Kirsten claims she is innocent, but when Sheriff Garrett and his brother, Adam, arrive, they find Kirsten bent over her dead husband's body with a gun in her hand. She tells them she shot at the killer. While Sheriff Garrett and Adam believe her, all the evidence points to Kirsten. Adam has to find a way to save Kirsten from going to jail but that means going against his big brother, the man who raised him and his siblings after their parents were killed.

The author has created a story filled with danger and adventure as well as romance. The author's skill is evident as the characters take on a life of their own and involve the reader in the suspense. The story flows smoothly with startling twists and turns. Both Kirsten's and Adam's points of view are used and the reader feels compassion for both of them as they are caught up in a web of suspicion. As the situation worsens, and all seems lost, Kirsten and Adam find solace in each other's arms. This is one romantic hero readers will fall in love with. I've never been to Texas, but the author brought the ruggard landscape to life. Maggy Shayne is a talented writer with a knack of pulling the reader into the story whether she's writing a time-travel, or a contemporary romance. I look forward to reading the other four books in this series.

      3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.......1999-08-31

Bad title aside, THE BADDEST BRIDE could do a lot worse. Unfortunately, it does "do worse" at some parts, but all together this is a good romantic mystery with original twists. Five stars for a novel that strives to be different than some formula romance novels. Three stars for an unbelievably unrealistic resolution that rains on this book's parade. Kirsten's past (her huge secret) is indeed too huge to be forgiven so easily by Adam, the man Kirsten has always loved. And it takes away from the seriousness of what has plagued Adam for much of his life.

        4 out of 5 stars A satisfying addition to Heinliein's works .......2007-05-10

I've always enjoyed Heinlein's works - his libertarian ideals and positive, if not conflict free, future visions have always made for appealing literature. Also, I really like the fact that much of his work is based in a consistent universe where one work leads into or foreshadows others.

Sometimes the writing can be a little pedantic, especially where he's trying to draw distinctions between the sexes, but this is just a `nit to pick in an overall enjoyable science-fiction tale.

5 out of 5 stars Strong Heinlein novel still packs a punch.......2006-07-15

Please note that this review is just about Methuselah's Children in this volume.

Someone gave me this book recently and so I reread it again for the first time in probably 25 years. I was pleased to see how well the book held up. Published in 1948, Methuselah's Children shows Heinlein's ideas about politics in the future were becoming darker and more cynical and in some ways the book presages the concepts in Starship Troopers. In Methuselah's Children, governments are not trustworthy, and even your neighbor probably isn't, which our Founding Fathers would have agreed with, which is why our system has so many checks and balances (especially the cantankerous but brilliant, cynical John Adams).

The novel also contains some of Heinlein's most interesting ideas for alien races, and the "God" race was a fascinating concept, with their technology so advanced that even Libby couldn't figure it out. Some of his earliest speculation on telepathy is also present, which he puts to good use both for the Howard families and in their contacts with at least two of the alien races. The story features Lazurus Long in one of his most dynamic and prominent roles, so fans of Long won't be disappointed there, and also Andrew Jackson Libby has an important role.

The background story of a race of Methuselahs and how that might be accomplished through genetic breeding was not too far-fetched given the science of the time, since genetic engineering was far in the future. Finally, many of the ideas about electronic banking, email, and networking that Heinlein uses in the novel have come to pass. At only about 270 pages, I think it's one of Heinlein's best stories and still holds up very well considering it's now almost 60 years old.

        5 out of 5 stars Some of Heinlein's best.......2006-05-02

This is a collection of four of Heinlein's epic 'future history' work.

The first selection "If This Goes On -" concerns Hugh, a young American soldier serving as a palace guard to the Prophet. America has become a totalitarian theocracy that Hugh discovers to be corrupt. This story is very good on it's own merit but is particularly chilling in our 21st century America confronted with totalitarian theocratic enemies and our own politically active religious right.

"Coventry" focuses on the ideas of freedom and societal responsibilities. Years after the events of "If This Goes On -" have passed society has established total freedom for all. The only restrictions are that one citizen is not allowed to harm another and even then there is no punishment only treatment and re-education. Still there are those who find even these restrictions too confining and for them there is Coventry. One such individual comes to realize that some rules exist for a reason.

"Misfit" - introduces Andrew Jackson Libby, a young member of the CCC (Cosmic Construction Corps) assigned to work in the asteroid belt while learning skills that will help him become a productive citizen. It seems that Andy, like the rest of the CCC are considered to be bad boys, troubled youth, or juvenile delinquents. It quickly becomes apparent that Andy does not conform to society for some other very interesting reasons. This character will return in many of RAH's later future history works.

"Methuselah's Children" marks the debut of Lazarus Long, perhaps RAH's best know character. Lazarus is the result of a genetic experiment on human longevity. The resulting test subjects of this experiment now number 100,000, have life expectencies two to three times that of the rest of the population. For years they have hidden their existence from the rest of humanity but now many of their group have decided that it is safe to let their presence be known. They felt that the rest of humanity is ready to accept them....they were wrong.

Lazarus Long and the Howard family figure largely in the rest of Heinlein work, and is the cental figure of the last few of RAH's novels. "Methuselah's Children" lays the ground work for these stories and is an exciting story in its own right.

This collection is a treasure trove for those unfamiliar with RAH's work and would be an excellent starting point. If it contains any that a fan has somehow missed to this point it is a must read.

        4 out of 5 stars 2100 or 2001?.......2005-03-21

I just had to buy a copy of "Revolt in 2100" when I read the back cover blurb:

"In the year A.D. 2100 an evil Dictator rules the United States. He maintains power through the clever use of advanced science and psychology. And he is backed by a dedicated military clique..."

Except for a little numerical dyslexia that's a perfect description.

4 out of 5 stars 4 stories for the price of one..........2003-04-25

These were some of Heinlein's earlier works, and as such, don't have the length and depth of some of his later, Hugo-Award winning works. Here's a short synopsis and review of each of the four stories. The first and the last are longer, multi-chaptered "short books", while the two in the middle can more appropriately be termed short-stories.

Revolt in 2100 - America is now a theocratic dictatorship ruled by the "Prophet" who is really a corrupt leader dependent upon brutal suppression of dissidents to maintain power. John Lyle, the main character, is a graduate of West Point and a young officer who, through the love of a priestess, joins the Revolution and overthrows this dictatorship. The story is somewhat shallow for those who are familiar with Heinlein's later works, but it is still entertaining. One thing Heinlein never did well was write romance. The interactions between his male and female characters are awkward - had he developed the talent for it, he could really flesh out the motives of many of his characters.

Coventry - Dave McKinnon, banished to "Coventry" for striking a man and refusing psycological adjustment, finds out just how brutal and uncivilized man can be when he enters the wall-less prison. A nice short story, but with an unresolved (and somewhat predictable) ending

Misfit - Here we are introduced to A.J. Libby, who will play a part in the next story. He is a young man working in a space construction crew, but discovers that he has a remarkable talent for mathematics. Extremely short, its more like a preview for the last story included in the collection.

Methuselah's Children - The Howard Families - 100,000 members strong, are having their civil liberties trod upon because their unnatural lifespans lead other humans to believe they possess the "fountain of youth" Lazarus Long, a rogueish character, leads the Families to steal an interstellar spaceship and pilots it to two alien planets before finally returning to earth. This was by far the best of the four, very entertaining, but in some parts, Heinlein delves a little too far into esoteric subjects that are of interest only to physicists and theoretical mathematicians - there are passages I skipped because they proved too difficult to understand for someone just looking for a fun fiction experience.

Altogether, this is a worthwhile purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Mostly for collectors of Disney Vinyl.......2005-08-19

This book is for hard core collectors of Walt Disney records on vinyl and in that respect it is indespensible. There is plenty of material for the Disney amateur historians too. The real treat for all the rest of us is 250 plus color photos of album covers and recordings. It's enough to give anyone the collecting bug. A very complete guide hat lists all of the Walt Disney record even on other labels. Lists picture discs, Little Golden Books, soundtracks to movies and TV shows, storybooks, and material from Disneyland. Includes EP's, 33 1/3 LPs, 45's, and 78's including alll records from 1933 to 1988. Functional table of contents and index help to locate items in the book. Very useful material on accurate grading the condition of records. A short history on the history of Disney records is in the book, an animated film filmography, and the music composers for all of Disney on film is very useful. Softbound covers, no dust jacket, 256 pages in length.

If you are also interested in the process, the how and why of the music of Disney, you also need to read the wonderful book, "The Musical World of Walt Disney" by David Tietyen.

5 out of 5 stars Disney Record Price Guide.......2004-12-03

I enjoy this book alot - it's complete and chock-full of useful information concerning the collection of Disney Records. Of course the prices are something to behold too (I figure I have about $50,000 (hyperbole) in my collection). The guide is very well organized and the individual entries usually consist of a picture, record number, brief description (at least enough to identify a particular cover version) and price. The guide even goes so far as to identify non-Disney labels issuing Disney material.

I wish the guide went into deeper discussions of the various Disney labels and the inner sleeves. I have several examples of, say, a Buena Vista label, and between the two BV labels, they are different! Which one to collect? Sometimes the guide falls a little short, but not often enough to prevent me from recommending this book for the serious collector or even the curious weekender.

Overall, to me, it's a valuable reference and fun to ponder. Now it's always a thrill to find a Disney record and read about some of the history behind it.

          Happy hunting...

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Walt Disney Recordings Reference !.......2000-06-26

This softbound 256 page book is a handy 6 x 9" making it convenient to take with you as you antique. It contains more than 250 full color, sharp photos of album covers and recordings. This is the first comprehensive price guide and discography covering the complete output of Disney recorded music on both Disney and other labels. It covers the years 1933 to 1988 and is very complete. There is a useful table of contents and index making it easy to locate items. A history and condition guide is provided. Topics range from LPs, 45's, 78's to Little Golden Records. You can't collect items of this topic without this guide. Add it to your library.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Disney Record Collectors.......1998-07-16

This is an invaluable resource for Disney record collectors. Beautiful pictures and detailed discriptions of every record the Disney company ever released. The prices listed might seem high, unless you remember that they are only for records in near perfect condition. I have already bought 2 copies.

          5 out of 5 stars Great reference!.......1998-06-27

The book is a really good reference on Disney records. The color pictures are a really nice addition.

It's easy to see why this nifty little book is already a bestseller in the crowded home-decorating field. If you're put off by--or just need a break from--all those plush design books filled with gorgeous but intimidating photos of rooms you can't afford, Elegant and Easy Rooms can help you meet your decorating needs as it gently but firmly shatters common decorating myths and offers countless specific alternatives. For example, white walls aren't the best neutral or the ideal way to maximize space, but there are plenty of other "safe" choices; a tiny wallpaper pattern won't make a small room seem airy but a bolder motif actually will. Those color coffee-table volumes are great for inspiration but often require effort to extrapolate specific, usable ideas. Here you can open any page at random to find concise, terrific advice drawn from the author's own considerable knowledge and from noted designers and design publications. You'll also find strategies for working with a professional designer even if you're on a tight budget. There's so much excellent and readily accessible information that even seasoned do-it-yourselfers will find themselves spurred to spruce up their decor after perusing this book. --Amy Handy

              Book Description

Elegant and Easy Rooms will tell you their opinions on everything from how to arrange furniture in comfortable and imaginative ways to how to choose a color to create a certain mood or period (in the 1940's a particular shade of yellow was the most popular). The chapters include: Paint and Color, Walls, Windows, Problem Rooms--Great Solutions, Home Furnishings, The Art of Display, and Telling Details. There will also be an incredibly useful and valuable appendix listing all the best mail order resources for everyone's decorating needs. It will be illustrated with charming, elegant black and white drawings that will further entice you to upgrade your decor.

5 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2007-05-15

I most likely agree with readers who have a positive opinion on the book.
I think this book is full of all kind ideas and how to create them. And it' is addresses to both - expensive and affordable option, you just have to use your imagination. Having elegant pictures drawn instead of photos taken reduced the price of the book and makes it affordable for everyone. I will recommended this book(and her others) for open minded and imaginative who does not mined of some home/leg work done and have fun with it and decorating...Can't believe that someone complained that they actually "have to go to the store to see how paint looks like" I think with attitude like that it is better to hire a decorator instead of critisizing the book

4 out of 5 stars Helps concretise ideas.......2003-06-17

A wonderful book that gives helpful details, "chair rails" for example, "are at 36 inches high, one shade of paint above the chair rail, one below." The book is filled with usable information on how to achieve a desired look.

5 out of 5 stars This is a different little decorating book.......2002-12-31

I've bought many magazines and books filled with pictures and information about decorating, so I thought I'd give the one with no pictures a try - and am I glad I did! This book (and the others in the series) give hints and advice I haven't seen elsewhere. If you enjoy decorating and want to stimulate your creativity, or are looking for hints to separate your home from the rest, this is a great book. It's a quick read, the ideas are clearly and succintly stated, and many suggestions are at minimal cost. If you're willing to try something a little different, you won't be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars From the Simple to the Silly.......2002-08-27

This book is a list of bullet points with specific decorating ideas from the simple (weave artificial ivy through the security bars on your windows) to the impractical (have your lampshades custom lined with gold or pink silk for a flattering light). If some of the ideas appeal to you, you may find the book worthwhile. If not, you won't find any general decorating theories to help you design own space. (And by the way -- if you can afford custom-lined lampshades, skip the book and hire a decorator.)

3 out of 5 stars paint colors dated.......2002-03-09

I was really excited to read the section on paint colors. However, Benjamin Moore and fuller O'brien have changed their color palates and do not have these colors any more. If anyone knows how I can get or mix Fuller O'brien's Beauty C-23, please let me know.

              Book Description

A portfolio is the designer's attempt to summarize his or her best work. But it is more than just a compilation of samples; it is a window into one's personality, goals, and know-how. The types of projects included, and the manner in which they are presented, tell volumes of information not only about an individual's capabilities, but also about his or her likes, dislikes, and aspirations. "The Right Portfolio for the Right Job" recognizes these factors in creating a portfolio. It offers practical advice, based on years of experience from twenty of the world's premiere design firms. Real-life strategies for preparing an effective portfolio and insights into marketing one's business are featured here. Each firm responds to a hypothetical client inquiry by compiling its own portfolio. Corporate identity, packaging, posters, brochures and collateral, and general portfolio projects are represented, forming the five chapters of this book. An in-depth introduction by Supon Design Group examines the importance of a strong portfolio and gives detailed, step-by-step guidelines on preparing an effective one.

2 out of 5 stars Not the right book.......2003-05-20

Although the presentation of the book was well done, if you are looking for inspiration on building an actual portfolio this is not the book. It is a series of case studies that don't actually show you want the end result of each design firms portfolio looked like. It only presents what went into the portfolio.

If you want to see a bunch a firms' work or if you are looking for best in practices you can pick up a magazine like HOW for about 2 bucks.

If you are trying to get inspiration on actually building your portfolio and want to learn more about how the end result should look, try another book.

                Book Description

This is the behind-the-scenes story of how an unknown actor/author (Laurie James) in mid-life made a dream come true and staged an original solo drama of a forgotten woman (Margaret Fuller) at Harvard and throughout the world.

This covers how Laurie James "discovered" Margaret Fuller, made her her mentor, how she learned to research, write a one-woman show, fledgling attempts at staging it, how she "got to Harvard", won grants and toured throughout the world to critical acclaim. It covers adventures in getting streets and plaques named after Fuller, plus many other events, and how James was driven to write and publish her books to become one of the foremost scholars on Fuller, devoting a major part of her life to her work. Photo section including never-before-seen pictures of Buckminster Fuller, grand nephew of Margaret Fuller. General interest. Adult level. High interest for actors seeking to launch their own one-person shows.
