Book Description
Egyptian Nobel laureate Naguib Mahfouz draws on his homeland’s rich engagement with the afterlife–and his own near-death experience at the hands of a would-be assassin–in these newly translated, brilliantly mysterious stories of the supernatural.
Among those who haunt these tales are the ghosts of Akhenaten, Woodrow Wilson, and Gamal Abd al-Nasser, who endure a strange system of earthly probation in the hope of gaining entry to the fabled Seventh Heaven; a teenager drawn into the secret, enchanted life he finds within his neighborhood’s forbidden wood; an honest perfume seller accosted on a night out by angry skeletons; and Satan himself, who confesses that there is still, despite the flood of evil in our times, an honorable man in the land. As ingenious at capturing the surreal as he is at documenting the very real social landscape of modern Cairo, Mahfouz guides these restless spirits as they migrate from the shadowy realms of other worlds to the haunted precincts of our own.
Product Description
Naguib Mahfouz, famed for his uncanny power to depict the real world, is equally ingenious at capturing the surreal, the otherworldly, and the supernatural. The ghostly side of Mahfouzs fiction, though less well known than his other works, nonetheless remains a haunting presence. This collection of stories sifted from his later writings brings these restless spirits out of the Mahfouzian shadows together for the first time in English: A murdered man finds himself in the first level of what he mistakes for Paradise - where he faces, along with historical figures such as Akhenaten, Woodrow Wilson, and Gamal Abd al-Nasser, a strange system of earthly probation that may (or may not) get him to the fabled Seventh Heaven. A teenager is warned not to go near the allegedly haunted wood in his neighborhood, only to be drawn into the secret, enchanted life he finds within it. An honest perfume seller is accosted on a night out by angry skeletons, who threaten to march upon his alley as an avenging army if the sinners there do not change their ways. Satan speaks to us directly - to confess that there is still, despite the flood of evil in our times, an honorable man in the land. These and the other startling stories in The Seventh Heaven make a vivid contribution to the translated works of Egypts - and the Arab worlds - greatest modern author.

Presenting very different focuses than your usual ghost story gathering.......2006-07-25
Naguib Mahfouz's supernatural fiction is outstanding, and it's too bad it's lesser known than his other works. The story collection culls his later writings to gather a supernatural presentation under one cover for the first time, presenting very different focuses than your usual ghost story gathering. From a teen facing down a haunted wood in his neighborhood to discover a rare secret to an honest perfume seller accosted by angry skeletons, good and evil are present in the supernatural world, seep into the world of the living, and seep into the satisfying reads here.

Parables on life, death and rebirth.......2006-03-06
I must confess that I have not read even a portion of the bulk off Naguib Mahfouz's work. He has written over forty novels, hundredths of articles and screenplays and is still in his old age actively writing, despite being severely wounded and subsequently crippled by a "religious" maniac. Nonetheless, it clear that his writing has a certain clearness, a way of looking into the heart of man and despite the honesty of it, leaving us with ambiguity and uncertainty. He makes it clear to us that people are not always what they seem to be and what seems to be moral to one person is trespassing and ultimate sin to another. Moreover, people in his works seem to hover without difficulty between righteousness and a world of shadows. This view of reality and all that is compromises, seems to be the bulwark and foundation of his work and especially these supernatural short stories.
In the first and longest story, The Seventh Heaven, a young student is killed by his best friend out of envy for a woman. The young man, Raouf, encounters Heaven and it is absolutely not what he expects it to be. He is judged by an ancient Egyptian priest, called Abu, who decides whether to let him rise to the second heaven immediately, punish him by reincarnation into a lower life, or send him as a spiritual guide to a lost soul. Raouf learns that the brutal man controlling his alley, the father of his murderous friend Anous, is actually Adolph Hitler and Raoufs own mother an infamous Egyptian serial killer, who unknowingly chose the righteous pass with the help of her spiritual guide. He meets figures world history such as Woodrow Wilson and Akhenaton, the later trying to redeem himself by guiding sinners for over a thousandth years, but failing every time. Raouf is judged as not yet worthy of the second heaven and send as a spiritual guide to unscrupulous Anous. It suffices to say that the whole story and its premise are in striking contrast to Islamic orthodoxy. In "The Disturbing Occurrences" a man appears both sophisticated and benevolent to some and satanic and sadistic to others, all the while the police man investigating him is rendered incapable of deciding which one of the two is his true persona. In "Room No.12" an unwary hotel manager is occupied by the demands of a strange aristocratic lady and her more then unusual guests, when all hell breaks loose. Death, sin, virtue and tradition play a very important part in the allegory of Mahfouz's stories. In "The Rose Garden" a clash between the traditional view of the deceased in Egypt and modern innovation lead to a murder, while in "A Warning from Afar" the spirits of the deceased threaten to march onto a sinful neighborhood as vengeful skeletons.
The stories and parables contained in this collection, with some stories having a time difference of over thirty years, are beautifully thought out reflection on death, virtue, truth and simple human confusion in the bustle and hectic of life. They are rich in allegory and metaphors, very often hovering between pessimism and hope, even reflecting on the unexpected hope and spiritual rebirth (take that literal) that death can bring. No matter what our opinion on his ability to depict the mysterious and otherworldly, Mahfouz's literary and intellectual statue remains unscathed and these stories are worth reading, if only to send a delightful shiver down our spine, or to make us pause for a moment and rethink important matters and convictions which we hold certain.
Book Description
Clara Wilson has come all the way to London to clear her name (after her wilfulness has left her quite unweddable across the ocean). But before she even has a chance to practise her curtsey, she stumbles into the arms of Seger Wolfe, Marquess of Rawdon. Clara has never felt love before, but she has no doubt when she meets the Marquess that this is what it feels like. Too bad love is the last thing on her mind – she's here to find a husband, not a rake.
Every good gossip knows that the notoriously wealthy Marquess loved and lost years ago, and few have missed the way his broken heart drove him from society ballrooms into society ladies' bedrooms. But when he meets the misplaced Clara Wilson at one of the town's ever–so–scandalous secret balls, the desire he feels for her is too strong, and it pulls him back into the swirl of aristocratic London. Now he finds himself competing for the heart of the inappropriate beauty, and risking his own heart in the game.

Disappointing.......2006-09-05
I was really looking forward to Clara's story. I enjoyed to Marry a Duke very much. but not so with this book.
Clara doesn't trust her husband as far as she can throw him, but demands he trust her blindly. She acts very childish and makes no real attempt to see what is really going on with her husband. Seger had some bad turns but he is honest with Clara and the same cannot be said for her. I thought when they started writing letters that perhaps we were going to get some character development. All it ended up to be was a race to the bedding.
Seger ends up being the bad guy and he really does nothing wrong. Shock plays a big part in his reaction but does Clara stay and find out what is happening? No - she runs away like a spoiled child because she assumes she has been betrayed. Sometimes you wonder if she actually likes her husband with how she treats him.
I was really hoping for better. Sophia's story was wonderful and it did not carry over to this book.
An Affair Most Predictable!.......2005-10-23
The theme of this story is how fast can we get to bed? There was absolutely no comments about the wedding and the arrival of her parents from America , except for one small description of her mother. The wedding was a total non-event.
No mention of the running of the household. I would assume several clashes between the step-mom and the new mistress, but we don't read anything about any of that other than their determined efforts to undermine Clara
This was probably one of poorest reditions of the romance genre during the 1800's that I have picked up thankfully from the library. I don't waste money buying books. Why would I when the libraries are full of them and you can return all the disappointing ones.
I won't be searching for the other 2 in this triolgy.
Engaging tale set in the late Victorian era.......2005-09-08
It is the year 1883, and American heiresses are being sent by their doting mamas to England to land the ultimate social trophy: a titled husband. The eldest of the Wilson sisters, Sophia, married a duke. Now, it is middle sister Clara's turn in the London Marriage Mart.
Two years ago, Clara Wilson was almost ruined when a fortune hunter lured her into an elopement. Saved by her father in the nick of time, Clara has done her best since to quell her longing for romance and adventure. All her best intentions go out the window, however, when she inadvertently attends an illicit ball and meets a seductive masked man.
Burned by love years ago, Seger Wolfe, the Marquess of Rawdon, has long forsaken the ballrooms of polite society. That changes, however, when he encounters a bewitching American at a Cakras Ball. Realizing she is an innocent in the wrong place, Seger rescues her from certain social ruin but not before stealing a kiss. Thinking he will never see her again, Seger is surprised when she shows up again -- this time in disguise -- and admits her attraction. Soon the rakish marquess and the daring debutante are indulging in naughty correspondence and a heated flirtation. Will this audacious miss find true love before scandal catches up with her?
Returning to the ballrooms and salons of the Gilded Age, Julianne MacLean's sophomore effort is a worthy follow up to last year's TO MARRY THE DUKE. Seger and Clara are well matched and their heated encounters, and delicious repartee bring this tale to life. But it should be pointed out that given the era in which this story takes place, when wealthy heiresses were better protected than Fort Knox, Clara's behavior at times was more foolish and rash than charmingly intrepid. However, this departure from reality detracts little from the story as a whole.
With its intriguing characters and surprise-laden plot, AN AFFAIR MOST WICKED should garner Ms. MacLean many new fans.

Loved the sizzle between this couple!!.......2005-04-18
I love sizzle in my romantic reads and this one had a lot of passion and lust. Seger was a true rake and London women practically would be willing to line up for how he could satisfy them in the bedroom - now you have to admit that sounds yummy! Clara meets Seger at a Carakas Ball where everyone wears masks so couples can disappear into nooks, and bedrooms with no questions asked. Seger, who had lost his one true love 8 years before has given up on love and romance and only wants fleeting inturludes - then by mistake he meets a truly lovely young American, Clara at this scandalous place. Immediately there is an intense connection between the two - in the weeks following it only gets hotter and soon they are meeting in his carriage at 2 a.m. and he finds himself actually purposing marriage. This is one hot book in many parts - it does seem to bog down a little after they marry as to Seger and Clara truly relating to each other in more than passion. I think this area needed better development.I did not understand exactly why Seger who was the true rake seemed to question being able to trust Clara. It would appear that she certainly had so many more reasons not to trust him! The villains were of the manipulative type and fortunately neither Clara nor Seger were totally able to be swayed - from their resolve to try to have a true marriage. I think the twist of the plot at the end was important for Seger to really discover how much he did love Clara and put his past behind him. All in all this was a good romantic read and I would recommend it to those that enjoyed this series. It was most comforting too, to see how well Sarah and James were getting along for they certainly had their challenges in their own book!!
Disappointed. ** A low 4 stars. **.......2004-10-09
In my romance world, a 10 rating means perfection - the author and I are in complete accord. 9 is a splendid read. 8 is a page turner but problems are surfacing. 7 is a page turner - but I'm disappointed. AN AFFAIR MOST WICKED is a 7. Seger Wolfe (Wolfe - how appropriate), the Marquess of Rawdon, is a sleaze. The Marquess is the equivalent of a high school senior who has everything: good looks, money, a car, and a varsity letter in every sport including the backseat rhythm. Clara Wilson is the inexperienced sophomore whom everyone has warned. This charismatic guy only wants to use her -- but Clara just knows she is the gal who can reform this sleaze artist.
American heiress, Clara Wilson, has journeyed to England to find a titled husband and to escape the scandal of a social faux pas. It seems Clara almost eloped with an embezzler. Seger Wolfe is living the good life, in and around every available "lady's" bed in England. Seger's scandalous behavior is the direct result of a lost love. Through social blunder, Clara and Seger meet . . . arousal has them both curious. In other words, Clara Wilson and Seger Wolfe are hot for each other. They marry quickly because they can't stay apart. Clara fancies herself in love; Seger knows it is a state of desire. The reader has now reached the halfway mark and marital problems become the story's focus. Woe is me.
At first, the relationship is romantic and wicked. Julianne MacLean has filled the pages with scandalous words and abundant love scenes. But after awhile, too much of a good thing is . . . is just that . . . too much. Some of the love scenes are superficial and pointless.
MacLean has chosen to draw her heroine, Clara, from the innocent, sympathetic and understanding mold -- a nice touch. Seger Wolfe, on the other hand, becomes a bore after the wedding vows. He is not fun anymore. However, the biggest problem with the book is the contemporary feel both in the dialogue and the attitude.
No doubt, Julianne MacLean is on her way. This lady will probably become a big star for the Avon publishing house. Her writing style is smooth and easy. However, in AN AFFAIR MOST WICKED, the author just hasn't found the historical niche. Grade: B-

Product Description
From Booklist: Clara thought there was something improper going on at the ball, but it took a sinful kiss from a stranger to convince her that something was wrong. A mix-up in invitations on the part of Clara's companion sent the two Americans to a notorious Cakras ball instead of the polite society event they meant to attend, but fortunately for Clara, the seductive stranger only steals a dance and a kiss before convincing her to leave quietly before anyone recognizes her. Once Clara discovers her mystery man is none other than Seger Wolfe, the marquess of Rawdon, she realizes he is exactly the kind of sexy rogue she came to London to avoid. Even worse, Clara isn't sure if Seger is asking her to indulge in a wicked affair or a proper courtship! MacLean continues her captivating historical series featuring American heiresses who marry into British nobility with this deliciously sexy tale of two people who marry for desire only to discover how important trust is to true romance. Book Description
Charles Bamforth, who has been described as "one of the two or three brewing scientists of his generation," here gives us a revised and updated version of his definitive guide to brewing. Bamforth traces the history of beer from ancient Babylon some 8,000 years ago to today's brewing science, recounting important brewing milestones along the way. This new edition contains expansive coverage of global beer styles throughout the world, the sensory character of beer flavor, and the development of the global brewing industry. Each of the staples of brewing (barley, hops, water, and yeast), the fundamental processes of brewing (mashing, boiling, fermentation, maturation, and packaging), and the quality determinants (flavor, foam, color, and clarity) is covered in comprehensive detail. Never losing sight of the central role of science in beer's design and manufacture, Bamforth closes with some predictions about the future of the industry. Ideal for the beer lover, amateur brewer, hobbyist, and undergraduate alike, The Art and Science of Brewing Beer is the ideal one-volume handbook on brewing beer.
Customer Reviews:
Just another basic brewing book.......2007-08-10
It covers the basics ok and that is it, very low brow. If you are a beginner brewer than use this book!
Fairly Small Audience intended........2006-02-22
I read this book, cover to cover in a couple afternoons. Even then it took me that long only because I had to do some other things. I thought this was a very well-written book, and fairly informative. It was nice to have all of this information in one handy little volume, although this is by no means a reference work.
My Likes: This book reads like a museum exhibit at a brewery. I like museums and I like brewerys. The author lets you see some of the more in-depth processes that are not done directly at the brewery, tells you about how the brewery does things and gives you a general feel for how the industry works.
My dislikes: The Author glosses over a lot of stuff. Some things are dealt with in great detail (like the malting process) while some other things are generally passed over (like brewing and sparging). Granted, this may have been because the author did not want the reader to become bored and inundated with things that you can find in just about any home brewing book on the market.
Buy this book IF:
- You are very interested in the business of brewing.
- You are a beer expert and need to own every book about beer.
- You are a homebrewer intellectual who likes to know everything about what you are doing.
Do not buy this book if:
- You are looking for a detailed description of the chemical reactions and biological workings of beer.
- You already own a brewery (or microbrewery)
- You are looking for a book that will help you make better beer.
interesting and fun.......2001-03-06
What can I say I like good beer and I like good books about beer and this is one of them.
From chit chat over anecdotes to some indepth info about beer, its history, the ingredients and the way it is made. You will never look at a pint of beer, whether bought in a bar or brewed it yourself, in the same way.
Very good coverage of many aspect of brewing.......1999-04-21
The author first introduces the history and evolution of brewing, explaining some of the hows and whys of beer-making. The scientific content of the book is very accurate and complete and is presented in a non-intimidating fashion. Finally, the sections on how the finished product is prepared, packaged and marketed gives a good understanding of what goes into it all before it arrives at the bar.
Brewing Science/Industry Overviews for Brewing Enthusiasts.......1998-10-19
This Brewing Science/History work is full-bodied, of wonderful color, of high clarity, and More Filling. A charming and insightful mix of lay and technical terms describing the entire breadth of Beer processing and historical lore. The book has a distinctive English flavor to it which results in an added benefit of perspective for any American Brewers library. A very affordable reference work. Thank You Dr. Bamforth!

Book Description
Hopi katsinam and the dolls that represent them have fascinated Indian arts trader and author Kent McManis since he was a little boy. In A Guide to Hopi Katsina Dolls, McManis shows how the eternal spirit of the katsinam manifests itself in the works of some of the most skilled and inspired Hopi carvers working today.
For the Hopi-a communal farming people who reside in stone and adobe villages on and near three Mesas in northeastern Arizona-everything in life is imbued with the sacred. The Hopi attribute their very survival as a people to the katsinam, inhabitants of the spiritual realm who convey prayers to the gods and respond with blessings in the form of rain, bountiful harvests, and plentiful game.
In A Guide to Hopi Katsina Dolls, more than seventy of the most prominent and intriguing katsinam who appear during the Hopi ceremonial year are described and depicted in full color photographs of both contemporary and historic katsina dolls.

A Valuable Resource.......2000-09-16
If you have an interest in Hopi katsina dolls, this is the right book at a price everyone can afford. Having been in contact with the author several months prior to the book's publication, it was eagerly anticipated. The finished product does not disappoint. As a collector, judge at several major juried shows and owner of a Native American Trading Company, Kent McManis knows his stuff! I have only one complaint ... I wish the book were at least twice it's size. At 56 pages, I hope the author will consider another book on the subject as he had with Zuni fetishes. This is the first book I have discovered which traces the katsina cycle and includes the corresponding doll on the page where it is discussed. This aspect alone makes the book a "keeper". Robin Stancliff is to be commended for 70 beautiful photographs of both contemporary / action pieces and historic / traditional katsinam as well. If you have never seen the work of modern masters like Brian and Ronald Honyouti, Cecil Calnimptewa, Ros George, Loren Phillips and Dennis Tewa ... add this book to your library. Thank you, Mr McManis, for sharing such a valuable resource with your readers.

You Get What You Pay For.......2005-01-01
As the saying goes, this small and inexpensive book gives you exactly what you paid for ... very little! The introduction to the book consists of three pages and the katsinam which are shown, though accurate, are certainly not some of the best examples. The primary katsinam for various seasonal dances are included, but very few others. One would be wise to chose other books on the subject.

Mary is a Color Genius!.......2003-08-07
I really love this book. I keep going back to it again and again, just to enjoy the colorful quilts! There is much to inspire here, and don't think that it is geared only towards the 30's reproduction fabrics. You can use the quilts featured in this book as inspiration for using any fabrics you may have in your stash. And Mary's no-fuss approach to machine quilting will help you finish all those un-quilted tops you may have. A must-have for any passionate quilter!
Cotton Candy Quilts.......2001-08-24
I have really enjoyed reading this book. I found it very informative and enjoyable and plan to use several of the patterns. I have purchased an additional copy to be part of a table decoration that I am making for the annual fall meeting of the Utah Quilt Guild. I've purchased about 15 books in the last 6 months and have enjoyed this one the most. I think it will sell very well. Our Guild has over 1000 members, and hopefully the book will get exposure at the meeting from vendors that are there. One problem I had was that I would have liked to have the Indian hatchet pattern printed in the book and it was not. If anyone knows where I could get a copy of it I would appreciate them letting me know.
For any involved in the fine art of quilting.......2001-07-06

Buy an original instead..........2007-10-08
This book is very pretty, and the ideas are cute too. However, when I saw it on the bookshelf, I thought it was from Susan Branch. Branch has been publishing books since the 1980's, and since the style is almost identical (watercolor illustrations, hand-drawn lettering, even the little hearts and smilie faces scattered around), it appears that Placzek has copied the style.
Branch has many, many books, also beautifully written and illustrated. I would prefer to give my money to the original.
Pretty Book.......2004-12-27
Each page is a work of art from the hand lettered text to the border designs. This would make a lovely gift for a harried sister or girlfriend. It's chock full of spa recipes (cinnamon mist to spray your rooms or aromatherapy neck roll) and decorating tips to turn your rooms into sanctuaries. Maybe make up a batch of maple sugar hair treatment to give you sister along with the book.
Some of the ideas or recipes may sound a little silly, such as combining 3 boxes of strawberry jello with 3 cups of champagne for a slippery foot bath.
Check the "See Inside the Book" pages to see the pretty artwork.
