Book Description

Like many gay sixteen-year-olds, Erick Taylor dreams of being a star. The problem is that he’s unpopular and stuck in Catholic school, and his parents, in their own desperate search for sainthood, fail to see that their son is on a path toward self-destruction. Unable to face his tormentors at school, unsure of whether he wants to live or die, Erick meets Chloe, “a twenty-six-year-old self-proclaimed ‘grandiloquent’ drag queen.” With a glam-rock makeover and a pair of platform shoes, Erick finally finds the courage to out himself, erasing his former identity and leaping blindly into Minneapolis’s gay nightlife. What begins as an innocent journey of self-discovery soon turns tragic when Erick’s life as an aspiring drag queen is halted by the unthinkable, and he finds himself alone, lost in the insanity of a world exploding. With exhilarating style and dark wit, Joe Babcock—winner of the Best Self-Published Novel awards from both Writer’s Digest and the Lambda Literary Foundation—paints a provocative, devastating portrait of what it’s like to grow up gay.

4 out of 5 stars A Phoenix Rising.......2007-05-09

This is an auspicious debut! If my math is correct, Babcok started writing this when he was around twenty years old, which makes it all the more impressive. To further augment this praise, The Tragedy of Miss Geneva Flowers won Writer's Digest best self-published book (before being picked up by its current publisher) in 2002.

Babcock's characters are starkly drawn and very believable. Erick Taylor, our sixteen-year-old narrator, feels different, separate from his family, and especially from his mother who became born again when their youngest son died. He meets the "fierce" and "fabulous" Chloe (a guy who dresses fierce in fabulous women's clothes, and my favorite character) while at the mall one day, and a magnificent adventure begins. Erick looks up to Chloe - indeed, is in love with Chloe - and sees himself becoming what Chloe once was, a (relatively) famous drag queen. His relationship with Chloe further alienates him from his family, as Chloe gives him what the book calls a "glam rock makeover", with spiked platinum blonde hair, 6-inch platform heels, and a whole new wardrobe.

As so often happens to youth in the gay community (especially today, as opposed to the mid 90s which I suspect this is told in), Erick finds his way to crystal meth. It seems that doing one drug led the way to doing more, because prior to and during his experience with meth he was, even if I'm being polite, a major "pothead". Erick's experiences with meth appear to be very realistic, but from friends I know that have experience with the drug, Erick's life didn't suffer the ruination that so often accompanies meth. Regardless, Babcock writes about Erick with a sure, strong hand, guiding him through what will likely be the most difficult period in young Erick's life. He finds love, loses it, wants it, yearns - and has "angst". Erick once posed a question, wondering why people didn't get his "angst".

There are times when Babcock, through Erick, intrudes on the story. If this had not been a self-published book, those passages would have been edited out. Still, they're not so intrusive that they detract from the story, and Babcock does a fine job of moving the story forward at all times.
[...]
I'm looking forward to more from Babcock. There was a disappointing dearth of information about him and his writing on the internet. I hope he keeps it up, he has great potential.

4 out of 5 stars Shedding light..........2006-09-24

I was trying to find a new book on gay life that wasn't just some erotic story. This book allowed me to see into a side of gay life that is very true without having to experience it myself. I found myself laughing yet scared at the vivid explanation of someone tripping on acid. I would recommend this book for someone needing to comprehend the realities of substance abuse, coping with being gay, struggling with fitting in, and if you're just interested in escaping your own realities.

1 out of 5 stars ZZZZzzzzzz.......2006-08-23

I really hate books where it feels like I am reading someone else's diary..this isn't an exciting diary but a BORING SLEEP-INDUCING diary...the book doesn't go anywhere..its basically a daily account of this spoiled selfish self absorbed brat kid named Erich Taylor. The dialog is really pretty corny as well.

Read at your own risk I guess.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time.......2006-06-08

If you love stories about twinks who drop out of school, do their nails, and take drugs----for 342 pages, this is for you. Otherwise STAY CLEAR!

5 out of 5 stars Something suspicious here . . . ........2006-04-11

When I look at a series of reviews of a book I'm considering buying and know nothing about, and see two reviews with one star and twelve with five stars, I immediately get suspicious. Were these 12 freinds of the author or two guys who have a grudge against him. What it does do is make all the reviews useless. Too Bad. I gave it a five star just because Amazon won't let me get away with zero stars, or just publishing a comment rather than a review.

5 out of 5 stars Sensual, sexy and relaxing........2006-04-21

The story starts with the heroes' wedding (don't tell me that this not an original beginning). Then, the story develops between actual scenes and flashbacks from the heroes. Winnie is about to marry Morgan, the love of her life, but in the spot of the wedding she realizes that she deserves more than a marriage without deep and passionate love from her husband to be. Now, Morgan has to prove he is good enough for Winnie. Watching Morgan trying is priceless. Winnie and Morgan made a wonderful pair. Winnie really knows how to stand for herself and fight for her values until the end. She will not fight for a bargain; she wants EVERYTHING!.

4 out of 5 stars A Breath of fresh air, because the characters aren't always fighting with each other!.......2006-03-15

This is one of those titles that you start reading, then keep trying to find a place in the house where you won't be bothered by anyone else, so you can devour the book. It amazes me how many people & pets suddenly require my attention when I am reading a great book.

The basic plot-line has already been given by another reviewer, and I really hate to give too much of the storyline away, because I wouldn't want to ruin the enjoyment for you. So, I'll try to use generalities to convey why I think this book is worth buying:

First of all, the main characters aren't always fighting--wow, imagine that! I really loved that, and it is much more realistic to how life actually is when we fall in love with someone. I loved the female heroine, she was amusing and endearing, and wonderfully flawed as we all are. The hero was drop-dead gorgeous, but intrigued by Winnie and was kind to her, even when he had reasons not to be. Nice!

They each had issues to work through before they could learn to trust their feelings for each other, which is also true to life. I respected Winnie because she stayed true to herself and didn't compromise on certain issues important to her, so the hero Morgan had to get with the program. Yeah, baby!

I really loved this book, and it is on my "Keeper Shelf" to read again one day.

Tip: try buying a used book, especially via zShops, where the S&H is cheaper than on Amazon Marketplace and you can often combine shipping on multiple orders. I'm saving a bundle this way. I compare my book choice prices between ebay, zShops & regular Amazon Markeplace, to find the best prices. Watch those S&H charges, they can bite you where it hurts if you aren't careful! You can often find better prices on eHarlequin.com, but only on the more current titles.

Happy Reading!

5 out of 5 stars Romance Junkies, this one is an absolute must read!!!!!.......2006-02-21

The Secretary's Seduction is about a smart, sweet, insecure executive assistant named Winnie who is in love with her gorgeous and successful boss, Morgan. Like Winnie, Morgan has his own demons to contend with. The problem is, he barely knows she exists. That's all I'm telling you about the story. YOU HAVE TO READ THIS ONE FOR YOURSELVES! I've read my fair share of romance novels over the years and thought that I'd found my top 3 favorites, but this one takes the cake! Jane Porter does an excellent job bringing these two characters to life and, eventually, together. I could not stop reading it after I'd finished! I read it almost 2 more times after that! Could not get enough of this one! Looooooved Winnie because I could relate to her on so many levels. Morgan is my kind of boss, and I would take dictation for him anytime!!!! Buy this one right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book.......2005-10-19

THE SECRETARY'S SEDUCTION is one of my personal favorites by Ms Porter. From the beginning it sucks you in and won't let go until the final page.

Morgan is rich, successful and he decides that Winnie would make the perfect wife. Winnie isn't exactly sure why Morgan would want to marry her, but he does his best to convince her.

1 out of 5 stars Mistaken purchase.......2003-06-16

I bought this on the strength of an Amazon.com review and I must say I'm sorry I did. Lucky I bought a ... copy. Neither story caught/held my interest; none of the characters seemed fresh or interesting & the storylines were tired out, too. Same old, same old in my opinion. Cathy Williams' story was more boring than Kim Lawrence's.

3 out of 5 stars A great book for a good quick read.......2001-11-17

This book has two different stories from two good authors. Both stories deal with secretaries and their boss's. The first story is titled "Baby and the Boss" by Kim Lawrence. Nia has a strictly professional relationship with her boss Jake Prentice. Their professional start's to become personal when Jake finds himself left with a baby to care for, so he turns to Nia. He then starts to realize that Nia could be so much more then just his secretary.
The second story is titled "Assignment: Seduction" by Cathy Williams. Robert has respected his secretary Mellisa's need to have a strict "only professional relationship" but that soon starts to change when they on an assignment at the Caribbean. Both of these stories are good but my personal favorite is the "Assignment: Seduction"

5 out of 5 stars The Stunning Conclusion to the MATADOR series!!.......2004-04-11

This is the Third book of the Trilogy and the build-up is absolutly worth it! The action is both brutal and climactic as The Man Who Never Missed and his small band of Matadors challenge the despotically corrupt and failing Confed Empire and it's twisted and dangerous backer, the "kingmaker" Marcus Jefferson Wall, the most powerful man in Human Space. A man who will stop at nothing to see Khadajii and his Matadors dead and their dream of freedom for the peoples of the Confed utterly destroyed!!

5 out of 5 stars An insightful, inspired continuation of the series.......1998-12-31

For once, a "book three" as inspired as its predecessors. The Machiavelli Interface (TMI) continues the story from The Man Who Never Missed (TMWNM) and Matadora. Unlike a normal series, which introduces few new themes or devices, TMI gives us plenty of both. TMI is, like all of the books in the Matador series, inspiring and an enormously fun read. If you can find a copy, buy it, whatever the cost.

5 out of 5 stars The Confed is falling down, falling down........1998-07-22

Khadaji and the Matadors are now in direct conflict with the Galactic Confederation. Marcus Wall, the power behind the President of the Confed, is a master of plans within plans and will do whatever it takes to stay in, or at least near the center of power. But Khadaji is also a master, and his goal is to bring down the Wall, and the Confed along with him.

This is just what I was looking for: a cookbook for my grandchildren and myself to learn and enjoy making cupcakes together. They discuss the basic skills children learn while baking also the fun they have baking and eating them. This book gives you the opportunity to include kids in the baking process so that they feel helpful and good about the endeavor and we, the parents aren't frazzled by the experience. This book gives lots of tips about baking cupcakes with kids. This little cookbook also gives you recipes for frostings go with the yummy cupcakes you bake. These are a few of the chapters in the book: Cupcakes for Kids, Dinner Party Cupcakes, Fruit and Nut Cupcakes and Healthy Cupcakes. There are such recipes as Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes, Rainy Day Cupcakes, Pink Princess Cupcakes, Peanut Butter-Filled Chocolate Cupcakes, Kit-Kat Cupcakes, Perfect Picnic Cupcakes, Baseball Butterscotch Cupcakes, Root Beer Float Cupcakes, Henry's Race Car Cupcakes, Easy Carrot Cupcakes and a section for Dinner Party Cupcakes that appeal to adults. I recommend this cookbook to anyone who likes cupcakes and cooks or has children. In my opinion this book is a difinite plus for all Moms, Grandma's, Aunts, babbysitters and etc.

5 out of 5 stars Simple but Stunning Quilts.......2006-02-12

The directions in this book make it easy for even the beginning quilter to follow. I liked the fact that there was not a lot of wasted space in the book dedicated to quilting techniques that I so often find in books...If you buy one good book about quilting, you should not have to buy the same thing over and over again with every book you buy.
Lots of colorful pictures in a variety of color palettes.
I checked this book out at my local library three times before I thought to look online for a copy for myself!
The value for the price is very good...15 projects, all beautiful!

        3 out of 5 stars good...but.......2001-09-29

I was eager to get this book, based on the customers reviews. The design principal (a 4 patch block consisting of half-square triangles) is very well presented, with good instructions to create 15 different quilts. The idea that this one block could be - if desired - arranged into 256 possibilities was startling. However, I found most the pictured quilts to be primarily dark, rather garish, and quite busy - thereby "loosing" the basic design. If you use just the quilt diagrams as inspiration, I think you might make some lovely quilts.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for All Quilters.......2001-06-15

Spectacular Scraps is a superb book for quilters of all ages and levels. The examples are beautiful and the directions clear, concise, and easy to follow. The technique described doesn't rely on fancy cutting or templates but on the careful use of color.

Many quilters, like myself, avoid triangles because the measuring of the 7/8th of an inch is such a nuisance. In Spectacular Scraps the only shape that is used is the half square triangle and since it is the only shape, you can cut strips, cut squares, and cut the squares in half without worrying about the dreaded 7/8th.

And the results are spectacular particularly with the advice from the authors on how to use color and fabric print to complete dazzling, bright, jewel like quilts. Beginners will like the ease with which they can create a quilt that appears complex. Advanced quilters will be fascinated by the possibilities in the use of color and by how quickly a top can be pieced. The biggest problem is deciding which of the many possibilities to choose for your design.

5 out of 5 stars Simply brilliant, brilliantly simple.......2001-01-15

To make a half-square triangle is within the reach of even the beginning quilter. To choose two colours will not detain you long. And then, with lots of fabrics in those two colours - and maybe a fabulous fabric for the border, though that's not essential - this book shows you just what fun you can have. I've watched new quilters pick up this book, and browse, and then pay attention. They're not trying to work out IF they want to make a quilt like this, but which pattern to try first. The instructions are clear, with both Margaret and Judy giving their individual preferences for various techniques. Experienced quilters will have just as much fun making their fabric stashes into simply brilliant quilts. Great Australian imaginative quiltmaking - a brilliantly simple approach to making quilts that sing, and come together quickly. My first quilt was in purples and yellows, but spectacularscrapitis has got hold of me; green and red are next....

5 out of 5 stars great scrap book for half-square triangles.......2000-07-14

This book is based on 2 principles: half-square triangles and 2-color quilts. There are 256 ways to arrange 4 triangle blocks (4x4x4x4=256). The book diagrams all 256. My only complaint with the book is that I wish this diagram was larger. The authors cover fabric selection, half-square triangle techniques, and basic quilt instructions in the beginning. Since these are scrap quilts, exact yardage requirements are not given; an estimate is. There are 15 gorgeous quilts complete with instructions and color photos. The quilts vary in size from a 36" square to queen-size. Instructions are only given for one size of each quilt. To finish off the book, a gallery of quilts is included without instructions. Just looking at the gorgeous photos in this book will certainly inspire and motivate you

4 out of 5 stars Great Variety of Rooms!.......2005-07-31

I really like this book, I browsed through it (the UK version) when I was visiting over there, and bought it over here when I came back to save on my luggage weight. I like the fact that it is small in size (to bring with you to the stores), but it is also why I gave it 4 stars. The thing that I enjoy most about books of this type, is the ability to look at large pictures of the rooms and then have a breakdown of them so that you can figure out how to create the look for yourself. Most of the rooms are not what I imaginge for myself, but it is a great variety that will appeal to a broad audience.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas for real living rooms........2003-10-08

This is a great little book. It's small ... only measures 6" x 5.5" and only half an inch thick, but it has a wonderful selection of pictures of rooms in all styles. All of the rooms are sized like you would find in a regular home -> too often design books feature fabulous large rooms that most of us don't have. I don't think anyone could flick through this book and not find rooms that they like. It's great for showing different styles, but also shows great colour combinations.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK!!!!.......2006-08-12

Amazing book!!! Best 3d Instructional book I have ever bought for ANY 3d program. I would even venture to say that it's the best graphic Design book if it weren't for the WOW! series of books and "Real world Illustrator."

KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS BOOK ONLY FOCUSES ON MODELING! But it does a great job explaining the complex in a simple way.

        Bottom Line: GET THIS BOOK!!!!

5 out of 5 stars fun modeling book.......2006-01-17

I had both of the authors books for an online class.

This book was a lot of fun, even though Maya itself is a bit much to take on with 4 other classes. The tutorials allow you to be creative, but still follow directions.

I really liked the information from Loomis - and got introduced to a whole new topic. I found several of his books on line, and they have helped me with composition. The authors introduce you to a couple cool new resources like that.

I wrote the authors for some advise, and they actually wrote me back :)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for teachers.......2005-09-20

I teach in a tech program at a community college. Recently, due to the loss of an adjunct, I had to take over the 3D course. I have experience with 3D Studio Max, but very little with Maya. This book has been wonderful. It is structured in a way that is very simple to build a class around. The skills are sequential, but get students creating interesting objects very quickly, so that they remain engaged. The teaching tools, available separately, include a course schedule, and Powerpoint slides to introduce the basic skills of each chapter. This has allowed me to walk in and teach a program that would have been very difficult otherwise.

4 out of 5 stars Tutorials are great, but the book itself fell apart........2005-09-18

The tutorials are really good, complex and thorough and the book does its' job of teaching you a lot about the tools in the program and how to make them do what you want them to. However, I had the book for a few days and pages began falling out of it. Not one or two but a lot. I never had a book do this before. The second complaint is that there seems to be a step left out of the tutorials here and there. I went crazy trying to figure out the brief introductory part about projecting a curve onto a surface to 'cut out' a shape; turns out it was because the instructions were incomplete.

The tutorials themselves are otherwise great and I still recommend this book despite these annoying flaws.

5 out of 5 stars had this text for class.......2005-01-21

took a CC class on Maya and used this book. i got a lot out of it. usually i work with 3d max. now i feel confident in maya. really good chapter on shading networks.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best character animation book for Maya........2006-07-18

This is the best training book by far for Maya character animators. Even though the program is now dated, the theories and exercises are excellent and Phil Young's illustrations are very clear and concise. Young is a traditionally trained artist/animator so he knows what he is talking about, and he translates 2D physics to Maya very well.
The book is concise and well written and the illustrations are plentiful and simple to understand. The best feature of this book is that the enclosed CD contains the generic animation figure "Generii" created by Andrew Silke. Generii is used for the exercises instead of the usual 'realistic' (and often extremely poorly designed)character. The well-planned exercises and explanations work for any CGI program, so it is too bad that the title is going to date the book badly--look past the title and get this book if you are interested in learning character animation in CGI.

5 out of 5 stars great for animation.......2006-01-17

This is the one book out there with animation in the title that actually does animation.

I appreciate the study of movement presented in this book. It isn't rehashed from other books - it is fresh and makes a lot of sense. The wave theory is great - and is easy to do in 3d.

This book talks about the graph editor in huge detail. I got a lot out of it - especially since no other book does this.

        5 out of 5 stars great book.......2005-11-12

This book is terrific for learning to animate. I was happy with the traditional technique that was explained alongside the Maya. I did not run into the problems the other reviewers wrote - my book was fine and the tutorials were easy.

It was cool to work with this book because it focused just on animation. I bought a $50 book called animation, and it was all about modeling and rigging. I appreciate that this book was written by Disney guys, and kept me focused on movement.

1 out of 5 stars Headache & Heartache for Beginners.......2005-10-31

This book is good if you already know how things work in Maya.

If you are a beginner you will feel like someone dumped an 18-wheeler truck on you. The descriptions of tools and how things work are barely explained and then you are given exercises to do using those tools. The exercises say to start with a shape as shown in the picture and then "tweak" the shape until it looks like the other picture shown. I don't see how that can be called instructional. Unfortunately, how to get from one to the other is a complete mystery. I unsuccessfully spent several hours just trying to get anything accomplished with this book. I don't feel like I learned anything. The book seems to be written for those who know Maya's basics and want to get on with building. If you are new to Maya, AVOID this book. I am good at learning new programs generally speaking, but this book makes it hard and not fun.

3 out of 5 stars Not so good.......2005-10-10

Almost all the chapter files on the cd would open with errors, so they were practically useless. And for Ch.7 it says there are reference pictures on the cd for the throwing exercise, but there are no pictures. Also, there's a bunch of little typo's, but that's forgivable. This book is really easy and fast to read, I consider myself a beginner, but I guess I was a little more advanced than what this book had to offer. Overall, this is a decent book, but it isn't as great as everyone has been saying....

              Book Description

Biography/Music/Military about three extraordinary lives connected by a long-distance friendship for two decades. The soldier is Captain Jennie Calhoon Burling, U.S. Army Nurse Corps who met the sailor, Commander Donald O. Burling, USNR, on a troopship bound for Bombay during World War II. The singer is Dodie Frost, whose lyrical voice and ability to creat the right tunes for Burling's words captivated him. In 1982, the Burlings asked Frost to record a country gospel album for them in Nashville. It was the beginning of their formal collaboration. As she received detailed handwritten letters from these senior friends she never met, Frost realized what astonishing lives they had lived and continued to live in retirement. She discovered that the Burlings were educators, prolific writers and had each been published. Both were interested in theology and the Bible - Jennie Burling read it eleven times before her death. (The book is dedicated to Captain Burling) She was often called upon to give talks about her assignment with the Army Nurse Corps in 1943 in Iran. Her account is included in the book as is Commander Burling's five year tour of duty in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. Burling and Frost discovered in their correspondence that both shared an uncanny coincidence of events in their lives. In their revelations through correspondence Burling navigated troopships through the Pacific during WWII and Frost, the daughter of Master Sergeant Frederic Frost, veteran of WWII and the Korean War, traveled on troopships during the Korean War to and from Japan. The book reveals true accounts of real life events of love of country and dedication.
