A Wonderful Forensic Thriller.......2007-05-14
In the style of Patricia Cornwell (a real life former Medical Examiner), Keith Ablow (a forensic psychologist), and Kathy Reichs (a forensic anthropologist), new author Elizabeth Becka draws on her life as a forensic specialist to pen a wonderful thriller/forensic procedural!
Evelyn James is a forensic scientist in Cleveland 's Medical Examiner's office. On a cold November day, she's called to the scene of a chilling crime--a young woman has been pulled from the river, arms and body encased in chains, her feet ensconced in a bucket of cement. Literally drowned to death, the mystery woman preys on Eveyln's mind--especially when another young woman is found dead a few days later. What's even worse is that the second dead girl is Destiny Pierson, daughter of Cleveland 's Mayor. Added to the complications is the fact that Evelyn and Darryl, the Mayor, were once college sweethearts over a decade ago, and Darryl hopes to use that connection to get inside information on the case.
As Evelyn works with grizzled Homicide Detective Riley and newcomer Detective David, they find more missing persons cases that seem similar to the two latest deaths--and find a suspect who seems to fit the profile of their killer. Unfortunately, the suspect has knowledge of Evelyn and her daughter, Angel, leading them to the fact that sixteen-year-old Angel might be another intended victim.
Forensic science mixes with police procedure in Elizabeth Becka's debut novel, and the result is a great read that will keep you turning pages late into the night. As you gain details of Evelyn's personal life, insights into the new Homicide Detective, and background on the serial killer preying on Cleveland 's young women, you'll be enthralled with the perfect mix of truth and fiction.
I can only hope that Ms. Becka plans to return to Cleveland and Eveyln James, a forensic scientist that could well become another Kay Scarpetta, Frank Clevenger, or Temperance Brennan.
Good Start to a New Series.......2006-07-21
Trace Evidence by Elizabeth Becka is the first mystery in what I presume will be a series featuring Evelyn James. Capitalizing on the CSI trend, Evelyn is a forensic scientist, although Becka finds various ways to get her out of the lab and in on the action with the homicide detectives who are investigating a series of gruesome murders of young women.
I like Evelyn as a character, most of the time. Becka allows her to be intelligent and also allows her to handle the people around her with grace, even though she has an idiot for a boss.
The sulky, hostile teen-aged daughter was a trifle annoying, and there's a rather improbable romance between Evelyn and one of the detectives that will probably serve as a means to get her involved in future investigations in the next books to come.
Overall, however, I enjoyed the book. It was interesting to see a different side of forensic science-- instead of examining bones and bodies, Evelyn examines the trace evidence of the crimes. She for the most part retains her professionalism throughout the book, and it's also nice to see a writer tackling the fact that sometimes children are an inconvenience to working parents. I look forward to reading more of this series!
The Evidence Is There, Just Needs More Support.......2006-07-21
Trace Evidence, by Elizabeth Becka is a reasonably good read. Becka gets kudos for some originality in having her heroine, Evelyn James, be a forensic scientist instead of a pathologist or medical examiner forensic anthropologist or other type of Kay Scarpetta wannabe. She also gets kudos for having Evelyn put up a pretty darned good fight when she gets captured by the villain, as we know she will be. And she gets kudos for having Evelyn be halfway intelligent in dealing with matters-.
I have to take away points, however, because first Evelyn's cell phone battery is dead, then she leaves it in her car at a crucial point. Writers really need to come up with a more imaginative way to handle cell phones! I also have to take away points because the author has to stretch to put Evelyn into the action-- she's a laboratory scientist, yet the detectives continuously find excuses to take her along with them when they go to interview witnesses or suspects or the families of victims.
There are some loose ends and some rather convenient coincidences as well that don't get wrapped up to my satisfaction. Overall, I liked the book, but felt that there were several areas in which it needed to be stronger.
"Killing is a very intimate thing.".......2006-06-18
In Elizabeth's Rucka's debut thriller, Evelyn James is a trace evidence expert for the Cleveland Police Department. She has an irritating ex-husband, a resentful adolescent daughter named Angel, and an obnoxious and demanding boss. Her latest case involves the murder of a woman whose mouth was covered in duct tape, whose feet were encased in cement-filled buckets, and whose body was trussed in chains before she was tossed into a river. During her career, Evelyn has seen some pretty gruesome crimes, but this has to be one of the most sadistic. She wonders, "Who could have been so unspeakably cruel as to kill someone this way, to permit her to feel the frenzied pumping of her own lungs as they filled with water...?"
When the murderer claims his next victim, the pressure is on for a quick arrest. Although there are a few possible suspects, nothing concrete ties them to the murders. "Trace Evidence" features a spunky yet vulnerable heroine who is trying her best to succeed in a high-pressure job. Evelyn's personal life is in disarray. She resents her ex-husband and his perky new wife, and although she adores her daughter, she acknowledges that Angel can be exasperating. Since her divorce, Evelyn has had little time or inclination to pursue a social life, but she is attracted to David Milaski, a new and ambitious homicide detective with a hidden past.
Rucka does a number of things right. She balances humor and horror nicely, explains the forensic details with clarity and flair, and sets up her mystery intriguingly. Unfortunately, the serial killer is straight from central casting, the twists and turns make little sense and rely on far-fetched coincidences, and the conclusion is pat and formulaic. In her inevitable sequel, Rucka would do well to break away from convention and aim for a bit more originality.
A Scary Villain.......2006-06-07
The ending will haunt you. Lock your doors and windows when you read it -- especially if you are home alone.

Thomas' Characters Shine!.......2006-08-15
Sam Gatlin was a famous bounty hunter and he knew bounty hunters never got married! Still, Sarah Andrews was beautiful and with the sheriff raffling her off to the highest bidder; Sam Gatlin had no choice. He bought her! Then he paid her fine, took her out of jail, and married her. In a few days, he would let her know how their marriage was going to be. But, for now, Sam would deliver her to safety. He would settle her and then ride away. Sarah Andrews, angel extraordinaire, deserved that much. Yet, feisty Sarah Andrews continued to take chunks out of his heart; she twisted feelings he thought were long dead; and suddenly the word FOREVER began to haunt him!
Quietly, Sarah reflected on her life. She had nothing, except one ugly dress, and a drunk for a husband. What kind of man chose a wife from a jail cell? She didn't know Sam Gatlin but Sarah Andrews was positive he was the devil himself. Trouble followed him everywhere! A man, so mean, someone stabbed him in the back! Yet, something about him drew her. He promised to take care of her and she believed him! However, if the need arose, she would defend herself. Once before, a man had tried to force her! So when Sarah Andrews was ready, her husband would know! All she wanted was some respect.
*** Reviewer's Comments:
They call author Jodi Thomas the "The Queen of the Texan Romance" and whenever I finish one of her books, I sincerely applaud the sentiment. Ok . . . not every book she writes is phenomenal, but usually every book she writes is entertaining! Generally, her romances are sweet, touching, and her characters lonely and tormented. In other words, Jodi Thomas writes poignancy!
WHEN A TEXAN GAMBLES is book two in Jodi Thomas' "Wife Lottery series" and as a road romance, it does journey a tad long. However, WHEN A TEXAN GAMBLES is light, enjoyable, and it achieves page-turner status easily. Thomas fills this story with gentle humor and delightful characters. The heroine's jubilant spirit and the hero's gruff, lenient style flow smoothly. All right, I am a devoted Jodi Thomas fan. Generally, her novels are heartwarming and poignant. Sadly, in an era, when poignancy is so out fashion, Jodi Thomas still draws me in!

After beginning the book, I read until it was finished!.......2006-03-24
I believe the one who has written that Sarah was weak did not fully understand that she had lost trust for men as well as never had real love or basic trust from anyone after her mother's death.
She was striving to earn the Captain's respect for her as well as learning to trust him as well as his feelings for her.
This was an exciting book to read with quite a bit of action.
I like the way Jodi incorporates children into her books. The two I have read of hers have children for a brief period in the storyline. I recommend that this book be read in order that the series is written. Now, I have started Lacey's story.
Good story but I didn't like Sarah..........2004-12-10
Very rarely do I come across a main character that I don't like but unfortunately I didn't like Sarah. At the beginning she was a very weak "fragile" woman & you quickly became known to the fact that she thought everything in a relationship had rules. She thought it was o.k. for a husband not to love his wife but that it was a rule that she had to love him. She had rules such as a couple can't touch certain body parts in bed & stuff like that. I got so sick of her rules & then in led into her asking Same if he could do stuff again sometime. After the first kiss she would say, "Is it o.k. if I ask you to do that again sometime". This because the question she asked after everything. "Would you mind if I asked you to touch me again sometime". It just got on my nerves. Overall this was a good book if you can look past a very annoying Sarah. There wasn't as much adventure in this book as the first in the series but the story was still very well written.
By the way I noticed another reviewer was saying they hoped there would be a story about the ranger & I've read off of Jodi's website that she is writing a story about Two Bits (Nell) & the Ranger. It's going to be called The Texan's Reward. She states that she's finishing it up so hopefully we will see it soon.
When A Texan Gambles.......2004-06-23
Great book. I can't wait for the next one in the triliogy
I'd give it 5 Stars PLUS!.......2004-03-13
I've read the first two books in this series and, since I am not a reviewer and you can read the eitors' reviews, I can only give you my humble opinions: This is a wonderful story. Great characters. I loved this book so much, that I wish Jodi would make it at least 4 in the series as I would love to read more about that wild Texas Ranger, JACOB. I can't wait for Lacy's story. She's hillarious.

A Wonderful Romance.......2007-01-20
From the back of the book:
It all started when she got thrown off the wagon train. Now, a crook is dead and Sarah Andrews has been raffeled off in a "Wife Lottery." Thta seems bad enough- until she discovers her new groom with a knife in his back.
He just barely survives-and now if Sarah dosen't get him out of town fast, someone is going to make sure Sam Gatlin dosen't live long enough to enjoy the honeymoon. No matter what he may have done, or how many enemies he has, Sarah feels she owes him. After all, he saved her from a life in prison. But never in her wildest dreams did she imagine that this dangerously attractive Texan would steal her heart and make her want to take the biggest gamble of all....When A Texan Gambles!
In my opinion:
Recently I have discovered Jodi Thomas and every book I read of hers is a gem. Two trips to the library and many sleepless nights later, I found another favorite author to add to my list. Never have been fond of American Civil War romance novels but Jodi's characters bring post Civil War Texas alive in a way I've never read anywhere else. If you like books by Sandra Hill, Catherine Anderson, Lynsay Sands or MaryJanice Davidson then this book and author you MUST give a try!

Great "How to" Book.......1999-01-25
Like many people whose daytime activities do not depend on creativity I gravitate to a hobby that requires creativity. But how do you unleash latent creativity? Most of us don't have a clue, and we suppose that whatever creative talent we have will just naturally come out. Dr. Gamez's little book is the best "How to" book I've seen on this subject. I highly recommend it!

Great book for new doll collector.......2003-10-30
I think Jan Foulke is the leading authority on doll collecting. This is a great book for beginners. It gives great advice on what to look for in a quality doll. The dolls condition can be just as important as its rarity etc... This book is not thick, but has great tips and advice. I would recommended any book by Jan Foulke. She also sells dolls on Ebay.

Great beginner book!.......2000-10-22
Jan Foulke knows her dolls and provides interesting information about chinas. A great variety of chinas are presented, broken down by decades, from 1840's through 1930's. Photos provide side-views of fancy china heads for comparison of hairstyles. Basic information about manufacture, characteristics to look for when collecting and things to watch out for. A section is devoted to frozen charlottes. She also mentions Clear dolls and Ruth Gibbs dolls. Most photos are close-ups of the face/head, not full-view with clothing for those who are looking for costuming ideas. The only complaint is that the book is just too short!! Nice basic beginner book for the new china doll enthusiast.
A Must for Every China Doll Lover.......2000-03-26
What a wonderful book! Jan Foulke has outdone herself in this guide to china dolls. As a collector who is just tip-toeing into the world of these beautiful dolls, I was delighted to come across this helpful book. Ms. Foulke's book is filled with loads of details on identifying and dating your chinas, as well the most incredible photographs. The close-ups and comparisons of hairstyles of the various periods are invaluable to the new as well as the experienced collector. Having collected antique dolls for over 20 years, I was very familiar with the basics of china doll collecting. This book however, educates the collector in the fine art of collecting the china doll. If you don't absolutely love these dolls when you open the book, you will definitely want at least one for your collection by the time you finish!

Customer Reviews:
Quite Possibly The Ultimate!.......2007-09-09
Lora S. Irish is a talented designed and author. She has the ability to make the complicated simple and accessible for we less talented masses. This book may actually be THE ultimate design source for celtic knots, as least for the novice/beginner.
Well-laid out, Irish offers background, history and origins of the Celtic Knot and a nice gallery of various media illustrating use of the Knot. She shows us simply how to understand the patterns and how they flow, including a great beginners lesson on plotting and graphing Knots, as well as layouts. I like her use of colored pencils to illustrate shadow and depth, and in so doing she gave us a little primer of their use, too.
You will not be disappointed in adding this book as a design source to your library, whether you are a gourd artist, woodburner, painter or just like to doodle.

great ideas - wonderful book to dream with.......2001-05-23
Loved all the idea's and variety this book provided. For anyone planning an adventure in log home construction and living, this book is a true inspiration. Thanks for access to so many creative expressions by homeowners and builders, and for another wonderful log home experience.
Disappointing.......2001-03-09
The interiors are not the quality I had hoped for.And an entire book of log home interiors became too much for my eye in the end. I have bought several second home books recently, and my favorite remains a new book called Second Home, which shows not only log and timberframe homes but airy beach cottages, cabins in the woods, lake homes, and every other style one can imagine.
Inside Log Homes--The art and spirit of home decor.......2001-01-11
There seem to be two types of log home owners. First, there are the owners with an unlimited budget who hire archetects, interior designers, and lighting specialists who build and furnish the home immediately ready for "Archetectual Digest." Then, there is the rest of us.
This book offers superb ideas, hints, and warnings for both groups. In my case, the log home we are renovating was roughly built and poorly maintained. However, the price was right and the home had, as they say, potential.
The potential and decoration was also going to have to match our lifelong possessions. After three decades of marrage, dozens of moves, and time in Europe and Asia, our furniture was certainly eclectic. We were not about to have a giant yard sale and start over. Cindy Thiede's book on decorating help us in many ways.
Most importantly, she gives specific ideas and pictures that can help log home owners regardless of their problems or budget. In our case, there was the perfect answer to an problem we were having with an addition. Additionally, we found a picture of the exect rock fireplace we were seeking. In each case, we marked the book and told the subcontractor that this was what we wanted.
Finally, the author offers highlighted tips, facts, and web sites to help you through your decorating and renovation problems. The book concludes with a resource directory that cross-references pictures and ideas with the specific archetect, designer, or retailer.
In summary, if you building, renovating or decorating a log home, this book will help you in many countless ways.

Creative Ideas.......2006-10-08
People Shots That Sell is an inspirational overview of stock photography. The book's authors have been editors and agents in the industry and their perspective is clearly from that standpoint which can be a good thing for photographers. However, that also accounts for why the book glosses over many details and how-to information that photographers getting started in the stock business will want to know. There are no technical details on how the images in the book were produced, and none of the images have accompanying sales figures on how profitable they have been. Neither are any of them credited, not even in the back of the book, and that's an oversight that any photographer would cringe at. I suspect that nearly all of them were licensed from royalty-free libraries. I still recommend Photos That Sell by Lee Frost as the best book that I've found on this topic. People Shots That Sell is a beautiful book with wonderful photographs that can be very inspirational and idea generative for staging lifestyle people shoots to generate stock images. Most experienced stock shooters will not learn anything new from this book, but it can be a great resource for those wanting to start licensing their work as stock.
