"What is it about we Australians, eh?" demands a schoolteacher near the end of Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang. "Do we not have a Jefferson? A Disraeli? Might not we find someone better to admire than a horse-thief and a murderer?" It's the author's sole nod to the contradictory feelings Ned Kelly continues to evoke today, more than a century after his death. A psychopathic killer to some, a crusading folk hero to others, Kelly was a sharpshooting outlaw who eluded a brutal police manhunt for nearly two years. For better or worse, he's now a part of the Australian national myth. Indeed, the opening ceremonies for the Sydney Olympics featured an army of Ned Kellys dancing about to Irish music, which puts him in the symbolic company of both kangaroos and Olivia Newton-John.
What's to be gained from telling this illiterate bushranger's story yet again? Quite a lot, as it turns out. For starters, there is the remarkable vernacular poetry of Carey's narrative voice. Fierce, funny, ungrammatical, steeped in Irish legends and the frontier's moral code, this voice is the novel's great achievement--and perhaps the greatest in Carey's distinguished career. It paints a vivid picture of an Australia where English landowners skim off the country's best territory while government land grants allow the settlers just enough acreage to starve. Cheated, lied to, and persecuted by the authorities at every opportunity, young Kelly retains no faith in his colonial masters. What he does trust, oddly, is the power of words:
And here is the thing about them men they was Australians they knew full well the terror of the unyielding law the historic memory of UNFAIRNESS were in their blood and a man might be a bank clerk or an overseer he might never have been lagged for nothing but still he knew in his heart what it were to be forced to wear the white hood in prison he knew what it were to be lashed for looking a warder in the eye ... so the knowledge of unfairness were deep in his bone and in his marrow.
Ned Kelly as literary hero? Strangely enough, that's what he becomes, at least in Carey's rendering. Pouring his heart out in a series of letters to the country at large, Kelly wants nothing more than to be heard--and for the dirt-poor son of an Irish convict, that's an audacious ambition indeed. It's not so surprising, then, that his story continues to speak to Australians. Like all colonial countries, Australia was built at a steep human price, and the memory of all those silenced voices lives on. True History of the Kelly Gang takes its epigraph from Faulkner: "The past is not dead. It is not even past." And like Faulkner's own vast chronicle of dispossession, it's haunted by tragedies as large as history itself. --Mary Park
Book Description
“I lost my own father at 12 yr. of age and know what it is to be raised on lies and silences my dear daughter you are presently too young to understand a word I write but this history is for you and will contain no single lie may I burn in Hell if I speak false.”
In
True History of the Kelly Gang, the legendary Ned Kelly speaks for himself, scribbling his narrative on errant scraps of paper in semiliterate but magically descriptive prose as he flees from the police. To his pursuers, Kelly is nothing but a monstrous criminal, a thief and a murderer. To his own people, the lowly class of ordinary Australians, the bushranger is a hero, defying the authority of the English to direct their lives. Indentured by his bootlegger mother to a famous horse thief (who was also her lover), Ned saw his first prison cell at 15 and by the age of 26 had become the most wanted man in the wild colony of Victoria, taking over whole towns and defying the law until he was finally captured and hanged. Here is a classic outlaw tale, made alive by the skill of a great novelist.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant narrative voice and atmosphere outweighs inevitable plot.......2007-08-27
I tried this book for no other reason than I liked the title and premise. For a story where every reader knows the inevitable outcome, it manages to be both absorbing and fresh, with a unique voice in the form of Ned Kelly's narration. There's just enough taken from history, and enough extrapolated from bits and pieces of known correspondence and journalism, to make it feel like you are reading a historically-accurate (though clearly subjective) document - which, while not quite true, comes a lot closer than most "fictionalized history" novels. It isn't thrilling, because nothing recounted in the form of letters is ever thrilling, but it exerts its own kind of hold that keeps you constantly wondering what choice Ned will make next, and either cheering for him or wanting him to hold back. That's the sign of great characterization, and will keep me on the lookout for more novels by this author.
Excellent Heroic Myth-Making.......2007-04-26
Americans and Australians share many personality traits: both countries are vast expanses of wilderness, explored and settled by stubborn, independent people who often defied the British leaders. Their people also have a weakness for turning villains into heroes. In America, citizens cheered the exploits of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Bonnie and Clyde. In Australia, the lower class hero was a man named Ned Kelly, the son of dirt-poor Irish immigrants who led a gang of outlaws who made fools of the authorities for almost two years. This unusual historical novel purports to be the autobiography of Ned Kelly, written in painstaking script on stolen paper, envelopes and foolscap by an almost illiterate hero. By turns, touching and profane, the story details Ned's inevitable journey into thievery and lawlessness because of his fierce love for his mother. Ellen Kelly was a fiery beauty whose marriage to a weak-willed Irishman forced to flee Ireland after betraying his friends set the stage for tragedy. Unable to support his growing clan, Ned's father deserts them. When Ellen spurns the attention of the local policeman, she inspires a vendetta that curses her family for a lifetime. Desperate to provide for Ned, she apprentices him to a powerful highwayman. Soon Ned is learning the ways of thieves and robbers. The book chronicles his adventures with Harry, his eventual rebellion against the cruel criminal and his futile attempts to return to a normal law-abiding life working the farm for his mother. Carey has written a brilliant novel that captures the spirit and heart of a man who inspired the devotion of his neighbors and friends. Ned is clever, courageous, stubborn, profane, but at the heart of his character is his fierce loyalty to his mother, to his wife and to the daughter that he will never see. Carey captures the pride and honor that makes Ned so sympathetic and inspiring to his countrymen.
Mirrors the Jerilderie Letter.......2007-04-13
An excellent account of the Ned Kelly gang in the form of a series of letters.
The story is a fantastic read, though the style does take a little getting used to. Carey has mirrored Ned Kelly's famous The Jerilderie Letter in his prose, hence the roughness and lack of punctuation. The likeness is so clever, and the story so wonderful, that this book won him the ManBooker prize in 2001.
I highly recommended this book.
Simply put.......2007-01-05
It's one of the best adjectival books I've ever read.
Rugged and regal account of historical criminals.......2006-11-10
This is one of those books which needs a little introduction: in Australia, the Kelly Gang is famous the way that Dillinger or Bonnie and Clyde are in the US. This book shows Peter Carey trying (with much success) to recreate the rugged conditions of Australian life, and it is very well-written in a kind of rough-backcountry slang. It shows how incredibly talented Peter Carey is, and how his talents can be adapted over a wide range of subject matter.

Good, solid story from a fine author........2002-12-08
Back Cover description: Second Thoughts. It was love at first sight for Britannia Smith when she met Professor Jake Luitingh van Thien and she shamelessly followed him to Holland, hoping to see more of him. She succeeded--and to her joy, he proposed! But just when all seemed perfect, she met Madeleine de Venz. In every way Madeleine was right for Jake, and Britannia became more convinced that to go ahead with the wedding might ruin Jake's life.
I almost didn't read this one. The back cover description makes it seem as if she is a stalker. She winds up in Holland, but she goes with a friend. The story is filled with descriptions of the area, clothes and food. It is the same story as always--a bit of Cinderella--but always enjoyable. Britianna is strong and likable. Jake is a prince--what more do we need.

A Valentine For Daisy: Dictatorial, overbearing and downright rude! Dr. Valentine Seymour might be an excellent pediatrician, but however good he was with his small patients, he needed to develop more of a bedside manner with adults. Daisy disliked him the first time they met and he certainly didn't improve on further acquaintance. But somehow fate-not to mention his twin nephew and niece, Josh and Katie-meant that she had to keep meeting the man. Of course, she had a lot to thank him for-her new job with the twins among other things. Had she misjudged him after all?The Convenient Wife: Faced with no home and no family, Venetia was only too aware that Duert ter Laan-Luitinga's solution to her problems was certainly practical-albeit rather unorthodox. Yet, he seemed set on the idea of a marriage of convenience and Venetia really had no choice but to agree. So, having found a sensible solution to her difficulties, surely she wouldn't be so foolish as to fall in love with him-would she?A Girl In A Million: Caroline Frisby was right for the job-after all, she'd established an excellent rapport with the little boy while he was in the hospital in England. It only made sense that she be the one to supervise Marc's recovery back home in Hlland. But was she the right girl for the man? Marius Houben, the boy's uncle, was rich, attractive and successful-and very single. He could have any girl he wanted. What were the chances that he would want her? Caroline knew that they were one in a million.

Book Description
It's the weirdest alien invasion ever!
"I cannot tell a lie," says Rod Allbright. And it's the truth. Ask him a question, and he's bound to give you an honest answer. Which is why when his teacher asks what happened to last night's math assignment, Rod has to give the only answer he can: "Aliens ate my homework, Miss Maloney!"
Of course, no one believes Rod this time, so they don't bother to ask him why the aliens are here -- which is just as well, since he is sworn to silence about their secret mission; and the fact that he has been drafted to help them.
Customer Reviews:
A clever mix of humor, fantasy, and a little intergalactic fun that can't be missed!.......2007-05-31
Sixth-grader Rod Allbright hasn't had it easy ever since his father left. His mother has been forced to pick up the pieces of his disappearance, and work to support the family. With Rod's mother working so much, Rod has had to talk on more responsibility than the normal twelve-year-old usually needs to shoulder, such as looking after his three-year-old twin siblings, Linda (Thing One) and Eric (Thing Two). Acting like the man of the house, however, isn't Rod's biggest problem. His biggest problem is Billy Becker, the class bully. Billy is the shortest kid in the class. Oddly enough, he's also the toughest - working to make up for his size by beating up everyone in his sight. It doesn't hurt much that he has enlisted Arnie Markle - the tallest kid in the class - to act as his henchman. Rod would love to simply ignore the both of them, but the fact that he's a world-class klutz doesn't help when he's working to escape the clutches of the two bullies. Rod's only solace is being at home, tending to his pup Bonehead, and working on his school science project. Rod is thrilled to be working on this particular piece of homework, because it's actually a fun assignment. Putting all of his efforts into using papier mache to piece together a winning project, Rod even enlists the help of Thing One and Thing Two to help him with the messy parts. Everything is going fine, until a strange spaceship floats through Rod's bedroom window, instantly sending everything into an uproar. As bizarre as it sounds, aliens truly do exist, and are standing a mere two-inches tall right in front of Rod. Before he can even work up the nerve to ask what these intergalactic creatures are looking for, Rod has been titled a diplomat by Grakker, and is forced to obey all of his rules, otherwise he risks being shot by a red laser beam. Rod isn't interested in losing his life, or being burned, so he does as Grakker says. Of course, communicating with Grakker can be slightly confusing, as he's more interested in using brawn than brains to get his way. Communicating with Madame Pong proves much less difficult. According to Madame Pong, the aliens have come to planet Earth in an attempt to locate someone known as BKR. Unfortunately, their spacecraft has ended up in the papier mache, leading its powers to enlarge to its normal - extremely gigantic - size, to fizzle out. The aliens need Rod's help to fix the craft, locate an area where they can enlarge their shuttle to its normal size, and capture BKR. After much work, however, the craft is still not working, and Rod, along with Madame Pong and Grakker, as well as three other aliens - Snout, Tar Gibbons, and Phil - must work together to locate the missing piece, and find BKR. When the aliens accompany Rod to school one day, hitching a ride in his backpack, and his homework is destroyed - eaten by Grakker himself - Rod - who happens to be incapable of telling lies - reveals that aliens have digested his math assignment for lunch, and promptly finds himself the target of everyone's joke. His newfound embarrassment only leaves him more hungry to help the aliens and solve the mystery of BKR, but as he moves closer to the elusive mystery man - or, rather, alien - Rod finds that BKR has been closer than he ever thought possible.
I have been a fan of Bruce Coville's writing since elementary school. Which is why I found it essential to pick up the reprint of ALIENS ATE MY HOMEWORK. I remember reading this story back when I was in [...], and I absolutely adored it. Now, over ten years later, I find that I love it just as much as I did then - if not more. Coville's simplistic writing works in his favor to make Rod a lovable character from page one. Rod's penchant for being bullied instantly makes the reader sympathize with him, but also plants a great opportunity for readers to identify with his character - as so many children are bullied nowadays. The fact that Rod must contend with acting as the "man of the house" due to his father's disappearance, makes him seem more mature, and much more understanding than the average sixth-grader. And, that paired with his kind, lovable nature and personality makes him a delightful protagonist. Rod's interactions with the aliens are humorous, and Coville's descriptions of their looks - from their shape, to their color, and even describing their size, and unique characteristics - give each alien their own diversity. However, it is Coville's ability to give each alien their own personality, and special quirks that makes it simple for readers to choose favorites, and to remember each one as their own person. I found myself instantly drawn to Snout, as he is such an intelligent, likeable alien, with the ability to work magic using nothing but mental brainwaves. I also find that I have quite a soft spot for Linda (Thing One) and Eric (Thing Two). The twins are utterly adorable, and never take on that obnoxious, annoying side that often coincides with the presence of younger siblings. Instead, they provide a nice contrast to the oft-times heavy scenes, brightening the mood with their laughter and off-beat observations. It's also nice to see how protective Rod is of both Linda and Eric, as it shows a very sweet, soft side to his personality. Coville's wonderful writing, paired with Katherine Coville's gorgeous black and white sketches work together to create a delightful story that brings fantasy to life. A clever mix of humor, fantasy, and a little intergalactic fun that can't be missed!

Great Book.......2006-12-12
For quirky oddballs who like thought-provoking entertainment, this book (as well as its three sequels, "I Left My Sneakers in Dimension X", "The Search for Snout", and "Aliens Stole My Body") is absolutely perfect. Of course it is written with children in mind as the primary audience, but I am certain that adults will derive just as much pleasure from reading it as their diminutive counterparts.
Great.......2006-07-08
This was a very good book. I read it in one 2 hour space one afternoon. I just couldnt put it down, but somebody said that the others in the I Was a Sixth Grade Alien series are better, so I want to try them out too. I would highly recommend this book, and hope that you will enjoy it!
BORING BOOK.......2006-03-03
The book was good but not as good as the other Bruce Coville has written. "Aliens ate my homework" is entertaining but I think it would have been better if it was a lot more about the aliens not Rod's problems. The climax was almost like another little conflict in the book. This book wasn't a very good book. I suggest you read another book besides this one.
The author doesn't put a lot of stuff that can interest you. He'll jump from Rod getting hurt to the school project and just entertains you and doesn't make it as interesting as he could. If I could I would change the aliens needing a tube to enlarge their ship. I didn't like what the author did when they landed in Rods room. Why would aliens eat paper mashie.
A thrilling book .......2005-12-20
Aliens Ate My Homework is an adventurous book about a young boy named Rod who meets six aliens after they crash into his house. After Rod introduces himself to the aliens, they ask for his help in capturing an intergalactic criminal called BKR. At the same time he has to keep them a secret from "earthlings" and BKR. At the end of the story, the aliens capture BKR and take him to stand trail on Alpha Centari!

Some of the Old + Something New, Too.......2006-05-24
The concepts of this book run so deep and wide that if you just read it off in 2-4 hours in one sitting, you will miss the whole point of the book. This book takes the self-help genre to a new level. Not only from my experience with this book and from meeting the author behind the book, but also from the experience of all of the people I know who have read it, I can say that essentially, to anyone with an open mind, this stuff can be LIFE-CHANGING.
U want something LIFE-CHANGING? Read this book, and better yet, read Klemmer's other book about intentions running smack into reality. That book is even more amazing.
The merit of this book lies not in fancy language nor impressive theories and facts. What makes this book different is the RESULTS it produces. Nothing speaks louder than RESULTS.

Thirty charming, intermediate-level projects give knitters a wonderful opportunity to delight their children with familiar and beloved nursery rhymes on handmade mittens, scarves, hats, vests, or blankets. Each item, shown in color photos and charts, is worked in one piece and presents a shortened version of the rhyme along with an image that illustrates the playful words.
Customer Reviews:
Good design isn't just for grown-ups!.......2005-06-24
Let me just say right off the bat, I love this book!
A basic pattern for a blanket, hat, scarf or mittens is presented, followed by detailed graphs of 16 multi-colored designs, each based on a different nursery rhyme. The words are knit right into the accesory, and fleshed out with corresponding design details like flowers, fish, trains, or other animals.
General make-up directions are presented as well, including two different ways to finish the hat - either as a stocking cap, or as a four-pointed hat with tassels. The blanket, scarf, and mittens are all meant to be lined, and the lining instructions are clearly presented as well.
All of these projects are made up in fingering or sport weight yarn, working on 0,1 or 2 needles. The hat and mittens are knitted in the round, scarves and blankets on straight needles. Because of the lightweight yarn and small sized needles, these are not projects you are going to bang out in a weekend, but planning ahead to make a special item that is sure to become a family heirloom is a fine idea.
The designs themselves are what makes this book worth the cost. The patterns are extremely clever - picking up on the theme of each rhyme without being obvious or cloying. And I loved the color choices - many of these patterns would suit a boy or a girl equally well - no washed out pastel pink and blue baby blankets here!
For intermediate knitters, a little too much to tackle for a beginner I think. But if you have experience with, or want to learn fair isle technique, I can't think or a better way to start. Despite the small needle sizes, these kid sized projects will not require a huge time commitment, and I can only imagine the look of gratitude on the face of a lucky recipient, pint-sized or adult, of an item from this book.

A Delicious Nursery Rhyme Knitting Book.......2004-11-04
This book is a must have for knitters that want to add unique knitting designs for their adorable ones. The author provides designs on making garments using the nursery rhymes on mittens, hats, and scarves. The designs are cute and adorable. The instructions are colorful and clear. Your darling angels will love their hats, mittens and scarves!!!
Charming and beautiful knitting book!.......2004-02-27
I am very excited about this lovely book! The watercolor illustrations and beautiful photos show the clever designs off very well. A special chapter on color work is particularly helpful. The graphs are large and clear. The color palate is sophisticated and charming. My only problem is how to decide which to knit first!

Customer Reviews:
This is what it seems--and that's good!.......2005-01-13
To all the people on here who are complaining this book is "not what it seems," did you not read the product description? This is an encylcopedia, it says so itself. And it is a good one at that. It's got all the terms, many illustrations, and is a great tool to refer to for quick answers. It's very helpful when learning about the basics. No, it's not going to show you how to decorate your living room--it gives you information for you to do that yourself.
There are many many decorating books that have full page glossy pictures of other people's designs. This is not one, nor does it claim to be. This is something to help individuals make educated choices about their OWN styles.
It's an extremely good book and shouldn't be judged against things that are not in the same category.
A Pocket Dictionary for Those Who Know Nothing.......2004-10-01
This book is nothing more than definitions of basic items. I mean basic. The part of the book on ceilings gives short ( a couple sentences) definitions for 4 different types of ceilings - cathedral, tin, tray, and wood-beam. The rest of the book is equally basic. A better title for the book would be "A Pocket Dictionary for Those Who Know Nothing about Decorating". And don't let the "illustrated" part mislead you. Only half the items in the book are illustrated. The chapter on fabric has not a single illustration!! Don't let the other positive reviews fool you like they did me.
Decorating made simple!.......2004-08-27
What extraordinary and superhuman amount of work was put into the Pocket Decorator to make very complicated matters appear very simple! This fine nifty book is informative and indispensable for all students, professionals and any homemaker who do not want their home to look like an Ikea catalogue.
Sharpened my decorating skills.... .......2004-07-23
This little book has been a really great asset. The Pocket Decorator is a clear reference book of interior design terms, especially helpful for a decorating hack like myself. It shows things like the difference between styles of windows, which if you're renovating or building OR want to impress your home depot guy, is very useful information to have! There are smart design tips here too. For example, wall mounted lamps should be mounted 42 inches off the floor (Who knew?) and it also tells you how much clearance to allow for ceiling light fixtures over a table. (Like I ever would have even thought to think of this?) Because of this book I now have pink light bulbs in my boudoir. What more could a girl ask for? This book rocks.
Great Design Tool!!.......2004-07-14
I already have a few books that show different ideas, glossy photos of dream houses. But I needed a tool to help me put together MY dream house-- and this is it. It helped me locate the exact finish for the floor, and find the title for the chairs that I saw in one of the other books. Its to help you make your own house exactly how you want it.
Book Description
One of the most popular topics of the long-running Gallery Girls series of pin-up books is that of the wild "jungle girl." This powerful protectress of the animal kingdom is dressed in next-to-nothing, swinging from tree to tree, flexing her mighty thighs and sinewy biceps; her hard body glistens with pearls of sweat. A primitive with primal urges, she fights, she hunts, and in her more tender moments, satisfies herself with total abandon. Not exactly the girl-next-door, but that's the point! In this fourth excursion to deepest, darkest parts unknown, we display more exotic erotica, with artwork by Tomas Giorello, Mitch Byrd, Pelaez, Ruben Meriggi, and a mighty band of fellow explorers! Cover painting by Pelaez.

A BEVY OF JUNGLE QUEENS.......2005-11-11
Jungle Tails is the 4th volume in this series from SQ Productions showing off a bevy of beautiful jungle queens in various stages of dress...or undress as the case may be. Jungle Tails recalls those great spicy adventure pulps of the 30's and 40's although the women in Jungle Tails are not the helpless females of decades waiting to be rescued by the male hero. These women may be gorgeous but they can kick butt as well.
The book starts with a gorgeous pin-up quality painted cover of "Sheena" by the great Pelaez before presenting 64 pages of vine-swinging, leopard-skin wearing beauties. The usual array of talented Gallery Girls artists are on hand including Mitch Byrd, Glas Gallego, Lucio Parillo, Anibal Maraschi and Tomas Giorello. Diego Candia has a drawing straight out of an Edgar Rice Burroughs story with a topless jungle maiden battling a great bear. A fierce, raven-haired cutie finds herself battling a pair of dark skinned natives in a piece by Pedro Cuevas. A nude woman is bound tightly to the branch of a great tree as she recoils in terror as a great ape approaches her through the brush...kind of a Fay Wray on a smaller scale, also done by Cuevas.
Isaac Delrivero shows off his skill with a hot nude blonde lying serenely atop a large crocodile in the middle of a river. Keeping up with this theme is J.L. Marin with his own blonde jungle queen resting peacefully in a tree while her pet leopard lies on another branch just above. Diego Candia presents perhaps the most ferocious subject in the collection with is nude jungle babe looking quite intimidating armed with a spear with the skulls of several of her victims dangling from the end. Del Rivero may have my most favorite piece in the book in an ode to Robert E. Howard and Conan as his ferocious female combatant stands in a pit of deadly snakes as a great python wraps itself around her torso. She's holding the snakes head and deadly fangs at bay with one hand as she's poised to deliver the killing blow with her knife. A fantastic piece!
Jungle Tails 4 will sure to be a hit with anyone who loves classic pin-up art with a 21st century edge.
