Shauna Singh Baldwin's What the Body Remembers begins and ends with rebirth--an apt metaphor, perhaps, for the tragedy of Indian partition that forms the backdrop for her story. Though politics overshadows the lives of all the characters, the heart of this first novel is in the home where Sardarji, a middle-aged Sikh engineer, has brought his new wife, 16-year-old Roop. The only problem is, his current wife, Satya, is less than thrilled about sharing hearth and husband. Satya's inability to bear a child has led to Sardarji's recent marriage, and this fact, combined with jealousy has turned her heart "black and dense as a stone within her." Her rival is not only 25 years younger, but of considerably lower social rank, and her husband's obvious infatuation with Roop rankles considerably:
Can a young woman ever know his friends and laugh with them in that rueful way? How will a young woman know that he breathes deeply when he thinks too much, that he wipes his forehead in the cold heart of winter when the British settlement officer approaches to collect his yearly taxes? How can a young woman know how to manage his flour mill while he is hunting kakar with his English "superiors"? How will she know how to give orders that sound as if she is a mere mouth for his words? How will she know that his voice is angry with the servants only when he is tired or hungry? How can she understand that all his talk of logic and discipline in the English people's corridors and his writing in brown paper files about the great boons of irrigation engineering brought by the conquerors are belied by his donations to the freedom-fighting Akali party?
The rift between the two wives widens when Roop gives birth, first to a daughter and then to a son, and both children are sent to Satya for rearing. Eventually the younger wife demands the ouster of the elder from the household, and Satya is sent away. But her spirit is not exiled entirely, and years later, when Roop and Sardarji find themselves swept up in the bloody partition of India and Pakistan, it is memories of the elder woman's strength and wisdom that Roop draws on to survive. Baldwin develops her characters' personalities and interactions against the backdrop of changing Anglo-Indian relations; sometimes the political bleeds into the personal, as the novel juxtaposes India's struggle for independence with the smaller outrages and betrayals Satya and Roop suffer at their husband's hands--and each other's. What the Body Remembers is a powerful combination of historical and domestic drama, marking a promising debut for Shauna Singh Baldwin. --Sheila Bright

Book Description

"This is a story about estrangement and division... This narrative about fathers estranged from daughters, mothers from sons, husbands from wives, becomes a metaphor for the turmoil and flux we call history, without always speaking of that history directly... This is a novel whose many themes and characters have been orchestrated, for the most part, with great confidence and without sacrificing complexity. It is an impressive debut."
—Amit Chaudhuri, National Post (Canada)

"This is a captivating jewel of a novel by a seasoned and sophisticated writer... Beyond being a compelling tale of individuals, What the Body Remembers offers a gimlet-eyed view of a pluralistic society's disintegration into factionalism and anarchy. Though the events of 1947 India are a half-world and half-century away, in light of the religious and ethnic turmoil raging on earth, they still have much to teach us."
—Washington Post

Out of the brutal drama of Partition comes a rich, eloquent, and stunningly accomplished literary debut...

It is 1937 in a small village in Punjab, India, the beginning of the tense and tumultuous decade that will culminate in the violent and still controversial Partition between India and Pakistan. Roop is a young girl whose mother has died in childbirth and whose father is deep in debt. And so she is elated when she learns that she is to become the second wife of a wealthy Sikh landowner, Sardarji, whose first wife, Satya, has failed to bear him any children. Roop initially believes that Satya, still very much in residence, will treat her as a friend or even a sister, but it quickly becomes apparent that their relationship will be far more complicated than that.

Roop's story pulls the reader immediately into her world, making it seem startlingly intimate. As the novel builds, What the Body Remembers becomes Satya's story too, as she is forced to adopt ever more desperate measures to maintain her place in society and in her husband's heart. And it is also Sardarji's story, as the India he knows and understands begins to change beneath his feet. The escalating tensions in his own family reflect those of the religious and political dynamics that will lead to the cleaving of India—and trap the Sikhs in the middle of a horror wrought by the wresting of land. In a dramatic, terrifying conclusion the tragedy and strength of Roop, Satya, and Sardarji's lives reflect the greater world in which they must survive.

Deeply imbued with the languages, customs, and layered history of colonial India, What the Body Remembers tells the story of the Partition for the first time from the Sikh women's point of view, reclaiming a strikingly intimate and vivid sense of the large and colorful canvas of India and Pakistan. Beautifully written and profoundly shocking, Shauna Singh Baldwin's debut novel is at once poetic, political, feminist, and sensual—a true triumph of language and storytelling.

"In What the Body Remembers, with her sharp focus on women in such turmoil, Baldwin offers us a moveing and engaging look at 20th-century India's most troubled years."
—New York Times Book Review

3 out of 5 stars Woman's Fate.......2007-06-09

This was a very interesting story linebut the book could have benefitted greatly from the addition of a glossary. The use of Indian terms was somewhat confusing and a glossary would have made it a much smoother read.

3 out of 5 stars What the body remebers.......2007-03-22

A little too verbose. Difficult to get through the first 1/4 of book. However, well written, historically interesting.

5 out of 5 stars A People Squeezed on the Hinges of History.......2007-02-21

I knew about the partition of India into Muslim and Hindu states after Independence, but half a world and half a century away from the events, I had no clue about what that actually meant to the people who were living in that part of the world. It's less a novel of plot than of experience, told from the perspective of those who suffer the most when a people is squeezed on the hinges of history. I could not put it down, and I have not had that experience for a long time. I urge anyone serious about stepping beyond the predicability of a novel of plot or relationships to read this book. I cannot understand why it has taken so long for it to catch on in the U.S.

5 out of 5 stars Like opening a door on a whole new world.......2006-05-17

I loved this novel because it drew me into a world I knew very little about. It took a while for me to get passed the unexplained terms and aspects specific to this culture, especially since the author doesn't provide a glossary or any type of explanation. It is a testament to Baldwin's literary skill that those aren't necessary. The reader is forced to stretch to understand the cultures. But the reader's experience is much the richer for it. I find that I understand the cultures much better having experienced it without explanation. I came away with a real understanding of the different factions within the partition question. The horrible scenes of the trains mobilizing thousands of people back and forth across the country are devastating. The relationship between the two wives takes us behind the veil of secrecy that is so often drawn over the lives of women in polygamous relationships. The false sense of security and denial that pervaded the Indian middle class was heartbreaking as one after another myth is exploded on the road to 'freedom'. I know I will reread this novel because the richness of the story and the characterization will call me back to it again and again. I read it last year and it's sitting on my shelf waiting to be reread once again.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining story but..........2005-08-10

Overall, the book was an enjoyable read but it was not one of those novels where the characters and story draw you in to such an extent that you can't help stop thinking about them even after you are done. I found a few stylistic techniques annoying. For example, Baldwin would use a Hindi word or explanation and then right after the exact word would be translated in English. This repetition was distracting and too contrived. Also, the characters could have been developed more and lacked depth.

Book Description

From the author's website: The last thing Douglas Dubh MacKinnon needed was a wife, particularly a headstrong, pampered "princess" whose father is one of the most powerful dukes in England. After all, Douglas is already promised to wed another... a union that was to have put an end to a bitter centuries-old clan feud.

Lady Elizabeth Drayton doesn't wish to be married to Douglas any more than he wishes to be wed to her. Still, she agrees to her father's stipulation that they live as husband and wife—in all ways but one—for a period of two months. She has the duke's word that when this "temporary" marriage is annulled, she will be given her freedom, allowed to live the rest of her life by her own terms...

In the wake of the Jacobite's final attempt to restore the Stuarts to the royal throne, a prince is running for his life in the isles...and two strangers who should have been enemies, are thrown together by chance. They soon discover, however, that appearances aren't always what they seem, leaving them both to wonder... just who is the deceived—and who is the deceiver?

4 out of 5 stars Humorous & Fun to Read.......2007-07-11

This is my first Jaclyn Reding book and not my last. The story was enjoyable and fun to read, (the exception of course, being constant wars and terrible suffering between the English and the Scots - it's amazing what humans do to one another). I liked both Douglas and Elizabeth and her very large family, although Douglas in the beginning seemed a little on the passive side, but he came into his own further in the story. The humor and tone of the story reminded me of Arnette Lamb's "Highland Rogue". I'm delighted to find another author who writes about Scotland. I just ordered the sequel,"The Adventurer".

4 out of 5 stars GOOD Book.......2005-08-07

This is a good book to read, however, the ending is something I would have changed. It seemed to short for my taste.

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this book -- you'll kick yourself.......2003-01-10

I loved this book. Elizabeth is a free-thinking heroine with spunk and spirit and Douglas is her perfect match. The setting of mid 1700's Scotland is splashed across every page in a way that makes you feel as if you're really, truly there, particularly the descriptions of the Isle of Skye. I read this book shortly before traveling to the U.K. last year and was delighted to see the ruins of the very castle used in the story still standing above the same harbor I had read about. It was like having a travelogue and a terrific story in one book. When I returned home, I reread the book just to revisit the places I'd seen.

The story itself is a great adventure with an English duke's daughter and a Highlander. Lots of tension and spark between these two as they are thrown together, literally, and come to terms with it. The love story that comes from it is filled with fire and tenderness, too, in the vulnerability of the heroine, which she tried to hide -- and the hero's sensitivity.

I also recommend the second book in this series, THE ADVENTURER, which I just read and LOVED! Don't miss either of them.

4 out of 5 stars Really good!.......2002-04-28

I am an Amanda Quick and Catherine Coulter fan-- mainly because of the character development (ie. feisty women, scrumptious men) and lively conversations between characters. FINALLY- an author who has that same magic! I'd give this a five, but there were a couple parts of the book that seemed disjointed. The hero seemed a bit of a wimp to me at first, but he had such integrity and was so kind, that I was willing to overlook that. ;-) The dialogues were great, there wasn't a lot of description of peoples feelings, because it was evident from the dialogues what was going on in their hearts and minds. The book also did a great job of introducing Elizabeth's sisters. I plan to have the entire series and read them again and again.

4 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable book !.......2002-03-25

This was a lovely book to read ! I had so enjoyed Jaclyn Reding's "White Heather" series, that I eagerly ordered this book. It was a great story, full of dynamic characters.

My only complaint about the book (and why I didn't give it five stars) was that it ended VERY abruptly. It seemed as if the story "turned out" in the last few pages and things seemed to fall together much too easily, after so much conflict. It isn't that I had wanted the conflict to continue, of course, I just wish more time had been taken wrapping up the story neatly.

All in all, however, it's a fun book and I do look forward to the other books in this series as they come out.

3 out of 5 stars It's OK.......2007-08-01

This here's an OK SciFi adventure. It could have been better if it had been shorter and had a few more plot twists. I mostly agree with the other reviews posted here, both the negative and the positive.

3 out of 5 stars Worth reading but a little dissapointing .......2007-03-19

My fisrt introduction to this author was "Ship of Fools" which I must say I was more than a little astonished by. I have read it through twice and the second time was just as good as the first. This book was quite a good read but it simply didn't have the sort of magic that "Ship of Fools" did.

Don't get me wrong, it was well worth reading but I would definitely rate this one more of a B to B+ rather than an A.

4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this novel, especially the author's point of view.......2006-06-08

The main character has a lot of veracity, and his thinking develops as he learns from his experiences. I felt I would have reacted similarly in the same situations, and could envision the varied environments in which the character finds himself. The end happens a bit quickly, and if the author hadn't needed to resolve the question of "what happens next?" he probably would have been better off devoting a whole book to the final sequences. As it is, he has set himself up for a sequel, and I'd really like to see this world continue. Now I'm interested in reading his other work.

3 out of 5 stars Russo's Codex.......2006-04-05

Personally, I loved the first half of this book. The concepts, characters, world-building, and ideas were a treat to read. I loved Conrad's World.

But, unfortunately, the latter half of the book fell apart. It got too big for it's britches, so-to-speak. Should have stayed in the divided planet of Conrad's World. I liked the landscape and dangerous exiles there. They made the adventure of this book shine.

I would have easily given this book a full 5 stars if Richard paul Russo would've made this go in a different direction. Just became too far out...literally.

      Book Description

The Koran has constituted a remarkably strong core of identity and continuity for a religious tradition that is now in its fifteenth century. This Very Short Introduction explores the significance of the Koran both in the modern world and in traditional Muslim culture. Michael Cook provides a lucid and direct account of the Koran as codex, as scripture, as liturgy, and as the embodiment of truth, and examines its means of formation and dissemination. He also discusses issues of interpretation for certain key verses, demonstrating that fecundity of the text for readers throughout the world.

5 out of 5 stars very good introduction to quran/koran.......2007-09-16

This is a good history and a high level overview of the Quran. Author brings academic and historical context to the Quran. Readers looking to prove or disprove the authenticity of the holy book will be disappointed. Those looking for a scholarly perpective will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Overview in Small Size.......2007-07-18

Magnificent overview of the Quranic text, some thoughts on how it is interpreted, and also on the different styles of Quranic recitation. The book's scope is impressive for its small size.

3 out of 5 stars More Literal than Spiritual..........2007-07-16

This is a great book for anyone looking for a very scholarly look at the Koran and the world of Islam. It must be said that this is a brief overview of a very complex subject. The book it jam-packed with information 'about' the Koran, but does not spend much time on 'explaining' the beliefs behind the Koran. This is in no way a substitute for study of the Koran, if that is what the reader is looking for. As a very educated text, this book stands far above many others. It was not what I was personally seeking, but that does not take away from the quality of this text.

3 out of 5 stars Scholarly Work But Not Much Help In Understanding The Ideas Of The Koran.......2007-05-13

Awhile back I attempted to read the Koran, translated into English, and found it be one the most difficult and incomprehensible texts I have ever encountered. I was hoping this book might improve my ability to understand it. But actually it is more concerned with other aspects. For example, the book includes sections with titles like "The dissemination of the Koran," "The Koran as codex," and "The collection of the Koran." In addition, Michael Cook is a professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton and writes in the sort of academic language that many readers will find difficult.

One important point the book does make is that attempts to interpret the Koran are highly subjective and both moderate and extremist Muslims can find passages to justify their beliefs. For example, one sura emphasizes that there is "no compulsion in religion" while another, often known as the "sword verse," says that Muslims are allowed to commit acts of violence against those who are unwilling to convert to Islam.

Of course, the Bible also contains many contradictory statements and is very much open to subjective interpretation as well. In fact, while Christian Europe languished in the Dark Ages, Muslim civilization flourished from Spain to India and made signicant advances in philosophy, science and math. Even when Christian Europe started to once again advance invasions and atrocities, such as the Crusades and the Inquisition, still did occur.

The Islamic world remained militarily strong, including the advance of the Turkish Ottoman Empire all the way to the gates of Vienna. But it also became highly insular, rejecting important Western technological innovations such as the printing press. Meanwhile, the Europeans were exploring and colonizing the Western Hemisphere, not only building wealth but also exposing themselves to new ideas and new food resources, such as the potato and corn. In addition, the Europeans had, starting with the Renassaince, begun to reaquaint themselves with their Greco-Roman heritage. By the 1700's the Enlightenment had also began to spread, including its emphasis on rational thought and personal freedom that would lead to Western based modernism and secularism.

The Muslim world, in contrast, remained highly religious and focused on past glories. Of course, by the 20th century many Muslim leaders, such as Ataturk in Turkey, had become interested in bringing the advantages of modernization to their countries and by the 1960's you could even find some modern Muslim women who wore short skirts and high heels in public. But the Iranian Revolution of 1979 marked a return to fundamentalist Islam and during the subsequent decades extremist Muslims began to assert their influence both politically and culturally. Eventually this all helped to lead to the rise of terrorists such as Bin Ladin and the tragedy of 9/11.

Basically, this book will be of most use to scholarly types who wish to increase their knowledge of how of the Koran was formed and how it has been perceived and used by Muslims in both the past and the present. Those seeking a thorough interpretation of the Koran or even a basic introduction to the beliefs and practices of Islam will need to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars a very densely packed book.......2007-03-26

Published in 2000, this is a very interesting and useful book. I expected a brief introduction to the tenets of Islam. But this is actually a history of the Koran as a book. A great deal of noteworthy and even rare information is packed into this mini-encylopedia.

The tenets of Islam are discussed, but only as they relate to the sacredness of the Koran as a scripture. Chapter titles are: The message of the Koran, The dissemination of the Koran, The interpretation of the Koran, The very idea of scripture, The Koran as codex, text, worship, truth, and dogma. (The latter comprising five chapters under the various headings.)

The final section of the book discusses The collection of the Koran, The Koran in the lifetime of the Prophet, and Doubts and Puzzles. The illustrations are plentiful and excellent throughout. There are many examples of various Arabic script. Also included are photographs, a diagram of the physical motions of the believer in prayer, and a very good map showing places mentioned in the text.

Michael Cook is a scholar of Islamic history, educated at Cambridge and the University of London. He has been Professor in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton since 1986. Since "The Koran: A Very Short Introduction" he has published four major studies of Islamic dogma, culture and tradition.

Professor Cook's attitude toward the Koran will not be appreciated by Islamists. His approach is from the standpoint of logic, reason and history. He occasionally writes with tongue in cheek as he pokes some gentle fun at the casuistry that Muslims resort to in order to reconcile the incongruities contained in the Koran. Of course to Muslims, Allah is above logic and reason. Allah is omnipotent and does as he pleases. (There is an amusing section on how the Koran is recited in a rhythmical singsong - including the musical notation for the recitation. This, in spite of the fact the Koran forbids any form of music.)

Thankfully Michael Cook is rational and lives in the West. He has the freedom to think logically; therefore we can understand Professor Cook. Through the words of the Koran, Allah will continue his semi-coherent rantings and half-thoughts. These diatribes will live on through his followers, as they have since Muhammad started hearing the voice of the Angel Gabriel in a cave early in the 7th Century. Allah doesn't require understanding, just submission; submission to The Koran.

I have all six volumes of this series and they are the cookbooks I always seem to turn to. It has a wonderful format and ingredients you most likely have on hand. Directions are simple yet everything tastes like you spent a lot of time preparing. Everyone will always ask for the recipe!

                          Book Description

It was perhaps the most important firearm of its era. Tested and proved in the fiery crucible of the Civil War, the Henry Rifle became the forerunner of the famous line of Winchester Repeating Rifles that "Won the West." To the amazed muzzleloader-armed Confederates who had to face this deadly "sixteen shooter," it was "that damned Yankee rifle that was loaded on Sunday and fired all week." Here is the fascinating story of this rifle and its battle history, all illustrated with wonderful photographs, including a large color section.

4 out of 5 stars The Historic Henry Rifle.......2007-03-09

This book is for those who want to know the origin of the Henry rifle. It contains a lot of specific detail regarding specific Henry rifles. It is, however, also interesting to read about the difficulty selling the Henry to the military, considering the design's advantages were outstanding. The Henry continues to be produced today as an exceedingly popular rimfire and large bore rifle.

Civil War buffs will also enjoy reading of the Henry's part in that war and speculating as to the effect more widespread use of the Henry repeater would have had.

                              3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2000-11-08

This book is an interesting compilation of 'logo families', sets of logos that are clearly visually related to each other. The examples are diverse and useful as inspiration on your own logo projects.

However, there is no text in this book, and no developmental sketches, only the finished logo systems. Without even an attempt at explaining the various aspects of these logos, the constraints under which they were designed, and what makes them 'related', I don't see how the book justifies the 'Creating' part of it's title. 'Logo Families' would have been a better title, in my opinion.

Nevertheless, I do find it to be a useful addition to my library.

3 out of 5 stars So, So, but................2005-08-07

Being a huge Bonnie Raitt fan, I was of course disappointed. Yes, it is informative if you don't know anything about Ms. Raitt. I applaud her in being able to keep her private life so private. We may want all the "dirt" or what ever but it's really none of our business. She deserves that. Bego copied from alot of already printed material, but if you're not familure with or you're new to Bonnie's material then I guess this is an ok read. I'm not a fan of unauthorized autobiographys for this simple reason. But, being a huge fan of Raitt, well, you get what you get. If your not, save your money.

3 out of 5 stars Review of reviews.......2002-11-19

Instead of spending money on this book, just go back and read every review written on Bonnie Raitt's work, and you will get the same information. Mr. Bego offers nothing new and no inside information, no childhood background, no authorization or cooperation from the artist herself. Disappointing.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad as people here think!.......2000-08-19

Half way through reading this book I checked what amazon.com reviewers thought about it and I was very surprised with black-and-white opinions expressed here:seems that people find this book either the best biography ever written (which is not) or the worst biography ever written (which is not).I think that Mr.Bego did loving job, writting about the artist he obviously care for (no dirty sensationalism here) and if he used every available information he could (LP cover lines and so on) I understand that was the only information to be found,in his place I would probably do the same!As the book intrigued me to look for more of Bonnie Raitt's music,it did good job and even if its not the most exciting book ever written,it did provide me with some information about Bonnie which I didnt know before and it make me curious to listen ALL of her albums. Is that "the worst biography ever written" as the previous reviewers think?

                                1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2000-07-16

Being a hugh Bonnie Raitt fan one may imagine how excited I was to get this book. It actually is the liner notes from Ms Raitt's albums and various interviews she has given over the years strung together. Some of the text is taken verbatium off of liner notes.

                                4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed the book....but.......1999-08-06

Without going into alot about this book, it was first, unauthorized so it just isn't going to have the impact as if Bonnie was sitting there by the fire on a cold night, playing some acoustic slide and starting from the beginning, but there are alot of people out their who are new to Bonnie's music and don't know much about her and it was informative without getting into a whole personal detail. I enjoyed this for what it was, some day Bonnie will sit down and tell all but until then I just get off on her music and the great human being she is. That is all you need to know, just listen to what her song say to the heart and mind.
