    Book Description

The years 1942 to 1954 saw Faulkner's greatest success--and greatest inner anguish. Plagued by depression and alcohol, he knew he had more to achieve and a finite amount of time and energy to achieve it. This volume gathers four groundbreaking works from this fascinating period. "Go Down, Moses" is a haunting novel that explores the intertwined lives of black, white, and Indian inhabitants of Yoknapatawpha County. It includes "The Bear," one of the most famous works in American fiction. "Intruder in the Dust," a detective novel, is a compassionate story of a black man on trial and the growing moral awareness of a southern white boy. "Requiem for a Nun" tells the fate of a passionate, haunted Temple Drake and her tortured redemption. "A Fable," Faulkner's recasting of the Christ story set in World War I, earned him the Pulitzer Prize.

i love this book i started reading it the moment i got it. the story is so good you would not be able to but the book down it trully worth every penny

4 out of 5 stars The Best Series I've Ever Read..........2005-02-03

I really enjoyed this book. After being widowed for 2 years Kitty (Luke & Honey's daughter) decides she needs to leave the Triple M in order to move on with her life & decides to go to New York. She makes a stop at Beth & Jake's for a night & it just happened to be a night they were having a dinner party. At the party she meets Jonathan Fraser who asks her to be a nanny to his grandkids until he can find a new one. She accepts & when she arrives at the house she officially meets Jared Fraser. Kitty & the twins make this book awesome. The twins in this book will give you many laughs with the pranks that they pull. Jared wasn't the most likable character & I didn't like the way he went about trying to convince Kitty that she wanted him. They had only had 1 or 2 intimate moments until about page 300 so if you are looking for the hot & steamy romance book then I wouldn't recommend this one but for anybody else that is following this series then this is a really good book. This is the best series I've ever read & there is still a couple more to come so be sure you don't miss the MacKenzies. In order to date:

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! Delightful! I smiled a lot.........2003-09-15

The storyline is great and the characters are rich, likeable and
enjoyable. But this book separates itself from other "westerns"
with the humor. The twins Becky and Jenny(and their dolls bibbie and bonnie) are a riot. The stuff they do to their governesses is histerical yet believable. You want to reach out and hug them. Maybe being a grandma makes it more real for me but I just loved them. They fit well into the story. In fact the storyline works around them. Jared's growth from the sour, self centered soldier to the tender doting daddy and the evolution of his romance with kitty warms the heart. And Kitty is the spunkiest heroine you'll see. A real MacKenzie gal......This book was much more enjoyable than I expected.

5 out of 5 stars THE MACKENZIES: JARED-JARED AND KITTY-SPOILERS.......2002-12-28

      favorite scene with kitty-
      her day in court.

      favorite scene with jared-
fighting with kitty after his ex's arrival and her final goodbye.

      favorite scene together-
fighting the outlaws in the barn.

4 out of 5 stars Kitty finds an Army man.......2002-11-23

This is the first one of the MacKenzie books I have read and it won't be the last.

This is the romance of Kitty MaKenzie and Jared Fraser. They don't' start out to well as she is mistakenly in his seat on the train and a rude encounter ensues. Kitty is going to visit relatives in the Dallas area, as she needs a change. Her husband has been dead for a while now but she seems to be in the same rut. At the same time Jared it returning home after being wounded in the Army. He is returning home to twin daughters that can't seem to keep a Governess for more than a week or so. One thing leads to another and Jared's father employs Kitty, and the fun begins. First off the girls don't think they need a Governess and want to be rid of Kitty by being pranksters.

I liked the development of the characters and their strong family values and the struggles that this presents.

              Book Description

Designed as a spiritual manual, this book outlines for lay people the principles of pastoral care ministry to the sick. Writing from years of experience, the author covers what to say during hospital visits, what to do, how to evangelize, how to pray with patients, how to see Christ in each patient, even difficult ones, and more. The methods here help care for the whole patient--body, spirit, and mind--while meeting the pastoral care worker's own needs, too.

Filled with anecdotes from the author experience, this book is clear, simple, and immediately useful. It covers everything from nonverbal communication to summoning up motivation when the worker doesn't feel like visiting. It provides answers for patients' difficult questions on both physical and spiritual matters and also gives workers tips for visiting psychiatric, intensive care, maternity, and pediatric units. The author includes original prayers, as well as quotes from scripture, John Paul II, and classic spiritual writers.

Though it has a wealth of information for the individual visitor, the book can easily be adapted for training use for workshops, retreats, and team meetings. Eucharistic ministers, pastors, pastoral staffs, visitation teams, evangelization teams, hospital chaplains, and student nurses in Catholic hospitals will each want a copy.

              Book Description

The Sicilian Gentleman's Cookbook is a son's tribute to his the father, "The Old Man" -- an Old World gent renowned as much for his cooking as for his delightful stories and outrageous claims. By the time you've finished reading his book you may not be convinced that Sicilians are responsible for chicken soup, rice, and pasta (as the Old Man claims) but you may well believe they invented laughter.

The writing style is relaxed and conversational. The recipes -- more than 160 -- combine Sicilian and American influences and include antipasto and salads; vegetables; soups and stews; pasta and sauces; seafood; poultry and meat; and sweets.

The dishes are all simple, authentic, and delicious:

Readers not familiar with Sicilian cooking are in for a treat. The food of the Mediterranean's largest island was influenced by the people who conquered it. From the Arabs and Moors come stuffed vegetables and the use of dried fruits and pine nuts. From the Greeks come olive oil and lemon. It is a simpler cuisine than that of the north, emphasizing leaner ingredients. For Sicilians, seafood is more important than meat, and lamb is more likely to be seen on the table than is pork.

The Sicilian Gentleman's Cookbook is filled with all the warmth, love, and happiness of the home that the Old Man created. The recipes are generously garnished with anecdotes and old-world philosophy.

              5 out of 5 stars A Favorite; .......2004-10-02

Tonight, 1st Octber 2004, I served yet anoher delightful dinner, this one centered around "the Old Man's" stuffed Manicotti; yes, I also did a few jumbo shells (they're easier!). Marvelous! In general, the "Gentleman's" is a nicely written cokbook that I have used frequently over the past ten or so years. Indeed, the recipes are straightforward and certainly "unexceptionable", but the results--if one pays attention--are more than acceptable. I do, of course, add my own "micro-spins" to the instructions because I have been doing this (cooking) for a while. And, yes, the comments that Baratta on occasion inserts into the recipe insructions are absolutely wonderful.

So I respectfully submit this opinion not only as an accomplished home cook, and sometimes writer, but also as an aging (fully half!) Sicilian.

4 out of 5 stars The Sicilian Gentleman.......2002-08-18

For anyone out there who is Sicilian/American, this is a great cook book. The author's stories are great. Brings back memories about what your grandpa might have said. I'm going to make the "Ricotta Pie" (recipe in book) for the holidays this year to keep up the tradition of our wonderful heritage. I enjoyed reading through this cookbook as much as I enjoyed the recipes in it.

5 out of 5 stars With insights into Sicilian culture and culinary styles.......2002-05-10

The recipes comprising Sicilian Gentleman's Cookbook were gleaned from the author's Sicilian background and provide over 150 dishes from pasta dishes combining meats and vegetables with stews, sauces, and soups. All come embellished not with color photos, but with the author's insights into Sicilian culture and culinary styles.

5 out of 5 stars Sicilian Cooking and Salty Opinions.......2002-04-09

Back in print--at last--is "The Sicilian Gentleman's Cookbook," which Don Baratta originally self-published back in the 1980s. It's a very personal effort, an hommage to his late father, who was born in the little town of Mussomeli in central Sicily and who came to the U.S. in 1905. The elder Baratta was a man of strong opinions; for example, he didn't consider many mainland Italians to be Italians at all or, as he put it, "anything north of Palermo is Swiss." The younger Baratta minces no words either, and often in this book he and his father combine delightfully: "Cauliflower is a much-hated vegetable in this country [the U.S.], yet it need not be so. It is usually boiled and accompanied by small groans. A non-Italian guest once watched with interest the respect my father paid this detested food. Her curiosity broke down her ancient reservations, and she tried a piece. The result was near-disbelief in the lively flavor. The Old Man flatly pointed out (indifferent to the insult he offered the poor girl's family), 'If it had been prepared correctly, you would have always liked it!' So much for polite chatter. He remained unrepentant all his life."

There's much more of the same in these pages, and plenty of recipes--many of them unusual and delightful (Sicilian cooking is ine of the richest and most varied cuisines in the Mediterranean basin). The pages are large, the type is clear, and there's only one recipe to a page. So whether you try the cauliflower recipes--or the cardoons or the meat and seafood dishes--you're in for a treat. Still, the best part of this book is the salty talk of two Sicilian gentlemen--the one who wrote it and the one who inspired it.

              5 out of 5 stars Delicious laughter.......2002-03-20

This is a great cookbook - the stories made me smile, even laugh; and the recipes I've tried have all been winners. We had a Sicilian dinner party last week - and every course was a hit. Take it from this cookbook maven, the recipes are easy to follow. Lovely illustrations, too. While I'm singing the book's praises: the price is really reasonable; I can't imagine a more-appreciated gift.

Over 500 beautiful color photos and a value guide to reflect the latest trends. Loaded with information, this book is recommended for all collectors of this whimsical Victorian pottery. 2004 values. AUTHORBIO: Mariann Katz-Marks lives with her husband and their three children in rural Pennsylvania . For years she pursued a career selling English and American Majolica through an at-home mail order business and numerous antique shows. Her fascination with this colorful Victorian ware began when she purchased a box lot of three Majolica plates at a country auction. She holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology and completed graduate work in Sociology, Anthropology, and Clothing and Textiles. REVIEW: This book is a tribute to the innovative and creative potters who produced Majolica pottery during the nineteenth century. It's a book devoted to the wonderful world where cauliflowers turn into teapots, fans become ice cream dishes, pickles are served from begonia leaves, and sugar is spooned from a pineapple. This bright and whimsical Victorian pottery is showcased in beautiful color photographs.

3 out of 5 stars The Collector's Encyclopedia of Majolica.......2000-04-26

I am new to the wonderful world of Majolica. I was looking for some reference books to help me purchase quality pieces of Majolica on ebay without paying more than I should. I found The Collector's Encyclopedia of Majolica a good reference because of the approx. 180 pages of colorful pictures illustrating the various types of Majolica pottery available. This book includes a value guide for the pieces pictured in it with a few pages of general information. I gave it 3 stars because it is helpful in pricing certain items but does not give you alot of details about the history of the many companies that produced Majolica.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-01-31

I checked this out from a public library years ago and then had a hard time locating it to purchase for myself. I love the book, pictures and full-size templates. The quilt color schemes are bright and yet traditional. Wonderful quilt ideas to give as gifts---as most are not full bed size.

              5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......1999-01-28

I have reeally enjoyed using this book. It has several patterns that I have made. Some of the patterns are hearts, trees, flowers, Christmas patterns, friendship wreath, and Irish Christmas. The small quilts can be used for all types of thing. A great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Very good presentation of the subject.......2006-04-15

As the other reviewer has said this book has very good illustrations and in many steps. It answered many of the questions I had on mitered corners and other things and so I will be able to use the other book I bought sewing edges and corners. One of the best books I've seen on this topic and sewing. I will certainly buy other books by creative publishing hoping that they will be good as this one. So this book is recommended for beginners with some experience.

Great ideas in this book! The illustrations and instructions are clear and easy to understand.
