Terry McMillan's novels feature chatty, catty narrators who have a story they're just busting to tell you. The dominant voice in A Day Late and a Dollar Short is Viola Price, whose asthma just sent her to the ICU. And who came to visit? The Jheri Curl-wearing Cecil, "a bad habit I've had for thirty-eight years, which would make him my husband." Viola doesn't think Cecil's such a catch: "His midlife crisis done lasted about 20 years now," and "to set the record straight, Cecil look like he about four months pregnant." But somebody did catch Cecil--he recently left Viola for "some welfare huzzy" with three kids. And, as we soon find out in Cecil's first-person chapter, Viola has abundant flaws of her own. McMillan deftly sketches the exasperated intimacy of the long and unsuccessfully married.

She also has great dish about family dynamics. Have Cecil and Viola's kids got problems! When lovable, luck-free Lewis turns up to visit his mom, he's drunk, broke, and still whining about his ex, Donnetta, who "didn't have as much sense as a Christmas turkey" (though she did have the sense to dump Lewis). Now Lewis consoles himself with his Bobbing Betty doll. "How could somebody with an IQ of 146 be so stupid?" marvels Viola. And that Charlotte! Viola's daughter is "a bossy wench from the word go." (Gee, where could she have gotten that trait?) Charlotte feels like she never got her fair share of attention, having been born 10 months after the eldest daughter, Paris (now the driven mom of a brilliant athlete whose white girlfriend claims she's pregnant). Charlotte took it out on younger Lewis and Janelle, who's been in college 15 years with no degree in sight.

At first, you'll make ample use of the family charts in the endpapers to figure out who's who, but pretty soon you'll feel right at home with the squabbling, multiply dysfunctional, ultimately loving Price clan. This book demonstrates why Terry McMillan is hands down my favorite author.I've read this book numerous times and have yet to grow tired of it. TM's writing style is unique, funny, and unparalled by any other writer alive. This novel will make you laugh and cry because the characters and their stories are just so real and touching.I find it impossible that anyone who reads this book will find it anything less than amazing.

This is one of my favorite books and I've recommended it to many of my friends. All of them have loved it. If you like horses, Montana, the west, or just plain good writing this book is well worth the investment. If you have never been out west read this book before you come because Spike will give you a good idea of what it's like to live out here.

Required Reading for English Graduate Students.......2001-02-22

The collection of thirteen essays edited by Peter C. Herman in Day Late, Dollar Short:The Next Generation and the New Academy is bound to become required reading for graduate students in English studies. The closely woven together essays embark on devising a better understanding of what Jeffrey Williams coins the "Posttheory Generation," which he defines as "the generation of intellectual workers who have entered the literary field and attained professional positions in the late 1980s and through the 1990s" (25). The members of this generation did not receive their theory first-hand, but rather "received the various approaches and epistemologies signified by the shorthand term Theory, second-, if not thirdhand. Theory is something we . . . are taught in graduate school, not something that we discovered for ourselves as its originary moment" (Herman 1). The scholars in this book find "most of the next generation has uncritically and unproblematically accepted these theoretical paradigms" and base the reasoning for accepting such theories without question on the uncertain job market that lies ahead for these Posttheory academics (2). Herman finds there is an "increasing, if subtle, pressure to write not what we feel, but what we thing we ought to say," so we may land a decent (e.g. tenure-track) job and an acceptable (e.g. research-based) institution with a livable e.g. (less than 4/4)teaching load in an ever-increasingly difficult job market where the corporatization of the academy is pushing the envelope on its members' academic freedom (4). Much of what the book states is not good news. The Next Generation has a bumpy road ahead of itself for those who seek employment in the New Academy.

In short, Herman's Day Late, Dollar Short: The Next Generation and the New Academy is an important, readable book. It is sure to spark much debate between the complacent past, frustrated current, and uncertain future professorate who follow the climate of life in the academy. Graduate students and faculty in English studies should carefully examine this book to gain insight into the theory wars of the past and the looming storms on the horizon, especially in light of the turbulent job markets and the possibility of corporatization of the academy. While the book does not sugar-coat the current or future academic conditions, it offers constructive ways of examining the fate of literary criticism's place in the academy so we may become active agents in shaping its future.

A really great story........2004-11-15

This is my first Peggy Moreland book and I thought she did a wonderful job. I now want to read the others in this "Tanners" series. Whit is such a stong, tender cowboy who lost the woman he loved (Melissa) to his best friend, Matt. Now seven years later, Whit has a ranch of his own and Matt has died in some accident. Leaving Melissa alone with a son (Grady). Word around is that Melissia is having money trouble and she asks Whit to train Matt's horse for her so she can sell it. He agrees and also helps out with other jobs too. He establishes a relationship with Grady and finds himself falling in love with her again. You find she has always loved him. Because of an accident a secret will be exposed that she has kept all these years. Will the secret tear apart their new found love or will love prevail? Read the book. It's a short easy read. I really loved Whit. He would be an easy one to love.

I have been a Scientologist for many years now. I have had parts of this book read to me by "concerned" relatives. Even if the thing this book brings up are true, which I have yet to be able to confirm any, I don't see the searing hatred justified. For example, the news about the GO's office having problems within it and Hubbard's ex-wife being in that office. So what? My life is far better off from Hubbard's works. What about the claim that people experienced in Scientology have gone through confessionals and are warning people that the point of the confessionals is to bribe people. Honestly, how could someone go through rigorous confessionals and publically issue crazy warnings like that? It doesn't make sense if you think about it. I could walk away from any or all of it any time I wish. True statement. I would not trade the wins I have had from Scientology for anything. True statement.

EXPOSING SCIENTOLOGY.......2007-08-11

While I haven't read this particular book, I have read the reviews and one, at least, mentioned how the Scientologists have tried to "erradicate" this book. I'm wondering if that is what is happening with the book I have ordered, "Escaping Scientology". It was to have been published this past April but now the publication date has been delayed until December, 2007.

I live in Clearwater, Florida, and for those who don't know, Clearwater is the headquarter for Scientology. They are all over downtown and have bought up several properties in order to expand. If I had my way, they would all be run out of not only Clearwater but all of Florida-better, yet, the entire country.

Atacking Scientology.......2007-05-19

Like the other reviewers who are *not* Scientologists (everyone giving this valuable book the 4 or 5 stars it deserves), I think the intellectual calibre of Scientologists themselves is showcased in their (one-star) reviews here. My sister recently married a Scientologist--with no clue and no research into the cult, and without heeding my many warnings to at least see what she was getting involved with. The only book that does a better job of explicating the cult is the now lamentably out-of-print Cults of Unreason. I'm working on (at least) an article on L. Ron Hubbard's creations (Dianetics, which developed into Scientology), and I *have* read several of Hubbard's own works. I highly recommend Scientology: A History of Man (buy it used and cheap) as one of the most unintentionally hilarious works of bad fiction ever written.

Ultimately, Scientology is just a spin-off from psychoanalysis--which has its own problems. Anyone who really would like some mental health should also check out Adolf Grunbaum's The Foundations of Psychoanalysis and Frederick Crews's Follies of the Wise.

Eye Opening.......2007-04-13

This was a very interesting book. Someone in my life was (maybe still is) involved in [...] and that's what piqued my interest in the subject. I love the Scientologists reviewing this book here. Are there grammar and spelling lessons in Dianetics? Just wondering.
Self-help? Fine. Charging money for the service? By all means! I love capitalism. But don't call it a religion. The book was a bit slow in spots, but very eye-opening.

I don't have that many cookbooks, but this one is by far my favorite. Great selection of recipies, suggestions for putting together an entire meal.

Most things in the book are much easier to make than they appear served - meaning that it'll make you look good without too much effort.

I'm here looking for a book to replace this one that I spent too much money on for what looks like a family picture album. Basically the author is showing off her own collection on her friends and family with no real information on what to look for when collecting jewelry. Save your money and find a better book! Unimpressive.......2004-02-14

This book is simply a list of ideas, most of them extremely basic, like paint the ceiling a light color to make the walls seem taller, or extremely cheesy and cheap, like covering furniture or a lampshade in wallpaper borders. Innovative ideas like using green plants to make a room feel airy or repeating a color throughout a room to pull it together are plentiful. Many of the ideas are repepeated in different chapters, only phrased differently. I read a few chapters and plan on returning it to exchange for something more unique.

What can I say - I work in a library that owns this book, so I have easy access to it and many other decorating books. But after reading this book excitedly, in one sitting, I feel compelled to buy my own copy. There are so many cute, quick, easy and inexpensive ideas here. Most of the ideas are so simple they really can be described in just a paragraph or two. Thankfully that's what the author does, rather than stretching out instructions to fill up space!

I happened to see Donna Babylon on HGTV one day -- and I loved her easy-going style of presenting information. She didn't talk down to the audience, or act like she had all the answers. And reading her book is just like having a conversation with her. It was exactly the lift I needed to inspire me to redecorate my dull white-walls-leftover-shag-carpet house....right now, I'm sitting in my newly remodeled den (which used to be a small bedroom) -- and after I took up the horrible smelly carpeting -- I PAINTED THE PLYWOOD floor -- and everybody just raves about it!! Donna Babylon ROCKS!!!

New Hope for the Decorating-Challenged.......2000-10-23

Every time someone mentions home decorating, my blood runs cold. I can barely get my outfits to match, much less coordinate a room. That's why my initial reaction when I received "More Splash than Cash" as a housewarming gift was slightly less than enthusiastic.

All that changed, however, the moment I opened the book. Written in a clear, conversational style, I was drawn in right away and not the least bit intimidated. So many straight-forward, creative projects...all within the grasp of this walking Home Ec disaster!

My biggest problem with this book? Prying it out of the hands of my husband!

Bravo! Hope there's a "More Splash than Cash" sequel.

Doesn't deliver as much as it promises.......2000-10-20

Although the concept and title are not new (my decorating magazines have touted "more splash than cash" stories for years), the book looked intriguing,so I got it. It's OK. Yes, there are some ideas here, but there is great potential for creating clutter, too. I looked for some tips along the way to help me understand how to put it all together but I didn't find anything like that. I need more basics! Without that, what you have in this book is a smattering of OK ideas that may or may not add up to a well-designed room in the end. So, pick and choose projects from this book carefully, and then look for another decorating book that explains the basics so you can actually put a whole room together.
