Book Description

A poignant account of her mother's death from cancer.

Think: dealing with Death and Dying of loved one

"For indeed, comparatively speaking, her death was an easy one. "Don't leave me in the power of the brutes.""

It all boils down to have an operation and perhaps live a bit longer or euthanatize and be done with it. The subject is death and dying is a main theme of Existentialism, as it deals with the individual and reality. Simone de Beauvoir's mother is 78 and lives alone -- by choice. She has broken the main femur (A bone of the leg situated between the pelvis and knee in human beings. It is the largest and strongest bone in the body. Also called thighbone.). While in the hospital, it is discovered that this is the least of her problems, as she has peritonitis, a blockage in her intestine, a tumor, cancer. She will surely die (almost immediately) without an operation. Simone must decide. Very well written, A Very Easy Death takes place over a 4 week period -- that is how long de Beauvoir's mother lived, after the operation -- cramming as much life and reality between the book covers as possible, without being sappy or tedious.

"I thought of all those who have no one to make that appeal: what agony it must be to feel oneself a defenceless thing, utterly at the mercy of indifferent doctors and over-worked nurses. No hand on the forehead when terror seizes them; no sedative as soon as pain begins to tear them; no lying prattle to fill the silence of the void."

This book is about as real as it gets! --Katharena Eiermann, 2006,, the Realm of Existentialism -- Presidential Hopeful

Simone,Simone,Simone.
Whenever someone asked me "did you read Sartre?" ,I usually intend to say "yes, lots of books of him ".but actually other than 1-2 books,I heard Sartre a lot from Simone.Anyway,I read this book 10 years ago probably, and as for the other books of her I enjoyed much.It is about the death of her mother.I remembered that in one part of the book ,her mother wanted to hear that Simone becomes religous, but Simone still defended her believes about being a nonreligous woman, eventhough her mother was dying.I really like that ,because no matter what ,she was always behind her ideas, believes, feelings. She was a strong woman. She was smart.I do not admire people, but if I would, I would admire to her.I remember a saying of her which I want to be :"Being a woman, who thinks like a man,and who feels like a woman".In short,in this book you can see her strength as an independent woman again.Enjoy her ,and start to think independtly. Thanks to my dad for putting Simone's books in his library so that I could discover it.

4 out of 5 stars Forget Sartre; De Beauvoir by way of Camus.......2002-08-13

While enjoyable, this isn't a particularly great memoir. I find it to be a bit choppy, and most of the characters (including De Beauvoir herself) come off as exceedingly unlikable. Still, the subject of death is an interesting one, and the novel is short enough that anyone who is interested enough to consider reading it really has nothing to lose.

What I do find most interesting, however, is how De Beauvoir (who consults her over-rated companion Sartre in the memoir) seems to be preaching Albert Camus' concept of the quantitative life, and living life with full consciousness. Ultimately, the memoir is rather tragic because De Beauvoirs' dying, once inauthentic mother realizes this on her death bed, when it's too late. It's an excellent message, and although it's better from Camus' pen, it is interesting hearing it from De Beauvoir as well.

5 out of 5 stars Death Comes Not So Easily.......2002-03-13

This is a book I would put on a must read list. Death has been spirited away behind closed doors, and banished from our thoughts until it forces its way through, as it always will. This is a must read for anyone working in "Health Care" or with the elderly, also anyone counseling families and the dying. I would hope to find it on a required reading list for medical schools as well. de Beauvoir gives an honest, raw account of her thoughts and fears as her Mother dies; it is a bit reassuring to see that not all of those thoughts are pure and idyllic. She gives any ethics committee a firm reference point in the consideration of assisted death vs. assisted living. Read this book, it will enhance your life.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE MY MOMMY!.......2001-03-14

The connection we have with our mothers is sacred. They are what brought us into this world, but the only thing that could separate us tighter is death. Our spirits and memories are ours to keep, but there is no longer any physical connection. In "A Very Easy Death", a relationship with a mother and daughter had gotten closer because of a death. In this death is what bonds the daughter to give full dedication and devotion to be with her mother. Unfortunately, the death that is connecting both daughter and mother is the death of her mother that is about to occur. Cancer is what is taking her mother away from her. While her mother is suffering and fighting against the cancer, the daughter is there by her side. She notices, "a full-blooded, spirited woman lived on inside her, but a stranger to herself, deformed and mutilated (Beauvoir 43)." Simone, the daughter, sees her full-hearted, spirited mother inside, but the cancer is the stranger of her body that is deforming and mutilating her. Although, Simone shows no suffering when she's around her mother, but she is indeed disturb when she's alone. Her mother is leaving her. Simone state "everyday had an irreplaceable value for her. And she was going to die. She did not know it: but I did. In her name, I revolted against it (Beauvoir 83)." Simone is spending precious time with her mother - spending valuable time, but the cancer is what is stopping her mother to notice it. The cancer has taken over her mother's life. This still does not stop Simone from being with her though. There is nowhere in doubt I'll leave my mother while she's miserable and suffering all at once. I cannot bare to think my mother actually leaving me, but it has to happen eventually. In "A Very Easy Death", Simone's mother demonstrates a role model on her own daughter and me. She displays a true role model that is fighting against her death. I enjoyed this novel dearly. It showed me that I should always keep that connection I have with my mother until the day "I" die.

        Book Description

When her mother was in the hospital with terminal cancer, Simone reminisced about her mother's life while Simone and her sister, Poupette, prepared to face the decision of whether to prolong a life when it is full of suffering. Like most people, they believed that it would be better to die than to continue to suffer, but their mother had a very different view of the matter. She truly believed she could find happiness in her own suffering.

Through her mother's beauty, her smile, and her pride in her life and in herself, Simone saw that to be human and to have individual choice are the most important aspects of existence.

From the bestselling historical romance writer Fern Michaels, author of TEXAS RICH and TEXAS HEAT, comes this exciting saga of Callie James, a brave immigrant girl from squalid Dublin, who battles her way through the hard world of late nineteenth century New York on a passion-filled, bittersweet journey to make her dreams of passion and success come true.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2005-12-19

This was my very first romance novel to read when I was 20 years old and I have reread it a dozen times since then. Fern Micheals is an excellent historical romance writing and hooked my for life.

3 out of 5 stars Not specially a Romance Novel.......2005-04-21

I wouldn't read this book if I really wanted to read a romance novel. The story is nice but full of tragedy and too much description of everything. It's not a light reading kind. It left me with a heavy head. To get to the real romance part you got to reach till the 3rd part of the book.

2 out of 5 stars Skip the first 300 hundred pages...if you want romance.......2000-12-04

Background: Starts in late 1840's Dublin and follows the life of Callie James for the next five or so years as she emigrates to New York. Selected by Romantic Times as one of the top 200 romances written since 1980.

Basically, this is a book with a split personality. The first 300 or so pages are the saga of a poverty stricken Irish girl going through one crisis after another. Our "hero", Bryce, appears three times - all briefly. The final third of the book is their "romance".

This book disappointed me. It may be just my taste, but when I set out to read a romance, I expect the male and female to be interacting with each other. Also, the characters aren't very interesting or deep. Callie is so busy surviving that there isn't much else to her. Bryce is a one dimensional guy that we never learn much about. Indeed, the only character with any charm for me was the butler, Edward - a chess playing, closet romantic black gentleman.

If you like rags to riches sagas, there are better efforts out there (think Barbara Taylor Bradford) and if you want romance....

5 out of 5 stars Wow! A long book worth spending the time reading!.......2000-09-17

This was an incredible book! Fern Michaels certainly can write. Callie is a great character to get to know. The story is both tragic and romantic...simply irresistable! You experience a child's fear, the struggle of an adolescent, the joy and pain of a young mother. A truly beautiful novel that gives Fern Michaels a good name!

                    4 out of 5 stars Unforgettable.......2000-08-29

I remember reading this book a long time ago, back in high school when I first started reading romance novels.... While browsing through Amazon.com, reading reviews and looking for a good book to buy, Cinders to Satin came to mind and so I had to look it up, curious to see if there were any reviews written about this wonderful novel. After reading some of the reviews, I had to write one of my own...

Cinders to Satin was and still is one of my all time favorite FM novels. After all these years, I can still vividly remember what the novel was about, proving that C2S has left a lasting impression. I loved the way the story began, how the heroine met the hero. The young hero saves a brash but brave little girl from being caught, and possibly hanged, for stealing food to feed her family (Ireland was going through a depression due to the potato plight). By pure chance, he sees her years later, and saves her a second time--this time from a fate far worse, a fate of exploitation and deceit. And he comes to her rescue again at the end, this time he saves her from herself. Don't get me wrong though, the heroine is anything but weak and fragile. She is bright and strong willed, but there is an innocence and naiveté about her that leaves her vulnerable. Callie grows up and goes through many hardship and tribulations.... But in the end, she discovers a love that has always been there, a true love that was lasting...

Cinders to Satin is a beautiful story of love lost and love found, hardship faced and happiness gained, of mistakes made and lessons learned. It is not the typical love story, but all the best elements of a true romance novel are there. Cinders to Satin is a truely unforgettable novel.

                                  Book Description

In science fiction's early days, stories often looked past 1984 to the year 2000 as the far unknowable future. Here now, on the brink of the twenty-first century, the future remains as distant and as unknowable as ever . . . and science fiction stories continue to explore it with delightful results:Collected in this anthology are such imaginative gems as:"The Wedding Album" by David Marusek. In a high-tech future, the line between reality and simulation has grown thin . . . and it's often hard to tell who's on what side."Everywhere" by Geoff Ryman. Do the people who live in utopian conditions ever recognize them as such?"Hatching the Phoenix" by Frederik Pohl. One of science fiction's Grand Masters returns with a star-crossing tale of the Heechee---the enigmatic, vanished aliens whose discarded technology guides mankind through the future."A Hero of the Empire" by Robert Silverberg. Showing that the past is as much a province of the imagination as the future, this novelette returns to an alternate history when the Roman Empire never fell to show us just how the course of history can be altered. The twenty-seven stories in this collection imaginatively take us to nearby planets and distant futures, into the past and into universes no larger than a grain of sand. Included here are the works of masters of the form and of bright new talents.Supplementing the stories are the editor's insightful summation of the year's events and a lengthy list of honorable mentions, making this book a valuable resource in addition to serving as the single best place in the universe to find stories that stir the imagination and the heart.

                                    Book Description

This anthology explores Rastafari religion, culture, and politics in Jamaica and other parts of the African diaspora. An Afro-Caribbean religious and cultural movement that sprang from the streets of Kingston, Jamaica, in the 1930s, today Rastafari has close to one million adherents. The basic message of Rastafari—the dismantling of all oppressive institutions and the liberation of humankind—even has strong appeal to non-believers who are captivated by reggae music, the lyrics, and the "immortal spirit" of its enormously popular practitioner, Bob Marley.

Probing into Rastafari's still evolving belief system, political goals, and cultural expression, the contributors to this volume emphasize the importance of Africana history and the Caribbean context. "Long before the term 'Afrocentricity' came into popular use in the United States, Jamaican Rastafarians had embraced the concept as the most important recipe for naming their reality and reclaiming their black heritage in the African diaspora." (From the Introduction: The Rastafarian Phenomenon)

This is the best book I've read on the subject. It is complete and gives the views of various scholars both Rasta and non-Rasta. I keep it as a resource and have read it 3 times.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of Rastafari theology and ideology........1998-10-13

Chanting Down Babylon is a welcomed addition to the growing literature on Rastafari. This reader sucessfully brings together most of the scholars studying Rastafari, as well as Rastafarians themselves, providing an important insight into Rastafari. The inclusion of articles addressing biblical hermeneutics as well as Rastafari theology begins to fill an important gap in Rastafari scholarship. A real treasure for those interested in learning about Rastafari for the first time, and for those who wish to expand their knowledge of this important religious movement.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A terrific All-Round General Cookbook!.......2005-09-27

For those who only have a basic collection of cookbooks, consider adding this up there right next the the Joy of Cooking. All these recipes are tried and true, not elaborate, and tested for good results, "Tested Til Perfect", in their test kitchen. Many are basic fare recipes but each recipe delivers an incredibly good dish. Yes, some are more tropical or ethnic in flavour. Canadian Living, with its magazine and television shows, produces & tests over 500 recipes each year. What you have here is a selection of the 350 best. However, this is not just your boring old basic Cooking 101 cookbook. There's a real focus on both regional specialties and ingredients and dishes that celebrate Canada's modern multicultural mosaic.

Re: Comments Below, If you were looking for "Canadian" recipes and didn't like the ethnic ones, then you've missed the point. Canada is as multicultural as it gets, the folks very openminded about ethnic food, so why wouldn't this cookbook have "tiramisu" or curried dishes or fusion dishes? Besides the "truly Canadian" dishes such as saskatoon berry pie would be impossible to reproduce if sasks don't grow in your area.

                                      4 out of 5 stars good cookbook.......2004-11-10

i've used quite a few recipes from the book and while a lot of them turned out really great, there have been a few that have turned out pretty bad (like the butter tarts - runny and tasted like corn syrup). some of the recipes in there though are SO good (like the black bean soup, old fashioned chicken pot pie, slow and easy real barbecued ribs, etc).

1 out of 5 stars Never knew Canadians made Tiramisu...LOL.......2004-11-01

Don't waste your money. If you want to make Thai food, Sushi, or Fetuccini Alfredo then buy a Betty Crocker book. Doesn't have Canadian recipes like I was looking for.

This is the cookbook that I go to the most (and I collect cookbooks, so I've got a million of them). Every time the recipes are perfect. It's quite like Mark Bittman's How to cook everything, but I seem to go to this one quite a bit more then the Bittmans.
I use it so much that it's filthy with spilled sauce stains!
No pictures, but the best basic 'how to cook anything' book.

                                      Book Description

Eileen Dubrow has exhaustively combined all original catalog material from major American furniture manufacturers of the 1880s and 90s. This period was American's hey day of growth, and its furniture is the fastest growing field of collecting today. This book will enable the reader to identify makers and give ideas of other pieces available. This book presents a fascinating study showing hundreds of examples covering furniture for the dining room, parlour, library, bedroom (brass beds), and office (a tremendous number of variations of roll top desks), including rattan and children's furniture. These pieces are still available in the market place at reasonable prices and are superbly crafted. This book contains a price reference guide.

Many of these pictorial descriptions are copies of the original advertisements, making them very authentic. It is a must for every collector of furniture from this period!

I am a custom framer myself, and even I got ideas for frame designs! The book is an extremely comprehensive guide for standard framing techniques, but what I really love are the more creative, non-standard techniques Tonia shows as well. A must for the crafter who wants to display her artwork, but who wants to "do-it-herself".

I am scared of power tools and anything that involves measuring, but Tonia shows easy and professional ways to frame art without having to take a wood shop class! Love this book and I am proud to have my art in it!

Tonia invites readers to enjoy framing with her, and I am so grateful! Framing can be intimidating, but she glides and guides us right past that with clear basic guidelines, classy projects, and her own very creative artwork. I had to do an art project to accompany an article for a major art magazine. Frame It! was my reference and inspired an idea - I am really happy with the results. This is a book I will USE in the studio.

After explaining that she views framing as "journaling for your walls," the author shows you unusual, unexpected, artsy ways to journal your life . . . on your walls! The book gives excellent ideas for framing anything from modern art to journal pages to antique flatware, with textures and colors as intriguing as the art they house. This will definitely inspire those with visual journals to Frame It!

Tonia Davenport's suggestions and ideas for framing are unique and easy to create by following her not-at- all-intimidating guidelines. The step-by-step projects are easy to follow along with, even when you've got a drill in one hand and a bottle of glue in the other. Not only are her frames mini works of art, but the art and images IN the framed examples will delight and intrigue you.

                                          Book Description

Planning a baby's room involves not only providing a pretty nursery but also tailoring your living space to the new arrival's needs. "Babies' Rooms" by Judith Wilson shows how to tread a fine line between tasteful decoration and the requirements of a small child, and address issues of practicality and safety, plus planning for future development. The book begins by looking at sleeping places for babies in the parents' bedroom. Next are inspirational chapters on decoration, lighting and furniture for unisex nurseries, plus fun and funky ideas for girls' and boys' rooms, and advice on the needs of planning a shared bedroom for a baby and a toddler or for twins. There are also chapters on adapting a bathroom for little ones, creating stimulating and safe eating and play spaces, and devising brilliant storage. The book concludes with useful checklists, a question and answer section, and an extensive resources list.

If you have a modest budget, strong affinity for white paint and your tastes lean exclusively to a modern aesthetic, you might enjoy this book. There is precious little interior design, or even decoration, happening in these rooms. They are hard, cold, bleak and sterile. It is beautifully-shot, but unless you're curious about how to elegantly frame shots of artfully simple rooms, look for inspiration elsewhere. There are a great number of shots featuring adorable baby dresses on hangers, hung from wall pegs...the good design happening here is of the apparel variety, not interior. For the most part, the rooms have all the charm of an underfunded orphanage. Not the imaginative, innovative thinking I had hoped for. Save your money and time, for this book wastes both.

This book offers up a lot of great suggestions when it comes to decorating a baby's room. Definately worth the purchase.

One of the many things that change in your life when the baby comes is that he or she needs a room. (This is besides the fact that your whole life gets turned upside down.) All of a sudden there's a new person in the house. A person with different requirements. Furniture needs to be different: a crib at first, then smaller chairs, storage (huge amounts of storage for diapers, for toys), and probably different decorations.

This book, by a former editor of Homes and Gardens talks about some of the ways you'll need to change your homes. Some of the things she talks about are things you'll notice that you've already done. Some of the things are good ideas that you'll want to implement. Some of the things she does just don't go far enough -- for instance I've always thought that having an eating area for the child that you can hose out once in a while seemed like a good idea.

Great idea book for the new mommy or even for daddy. Maybe he can build some of these things.

                                            Book Description

While there is considerable diversity in the forms and styles of cranial manipulation, all would agree that a thorough understanding of the sutures of the cranium and face is essential. Yet until now, no one has given these important structures the attention they deserve.

In this ground-breaking work, the author describes the structure and motion of the sutures in much greater detail than ever before, showing with extensive photographic evidence how the bones of the cranium actually move, and how the practitioner can optimally affect that movement. Based on many years of experience in both the clinic and anatomy lab, Dr. Pick's analysis is supported by over 300 photographs and illustrations.

Systematically examining each of the sutures, including those of the face, vault, and base, Dr. Pick brings clarity and precision to these descriptions. Everyone who touches the head with a therapeutic intent will learn many valuable lessons from this book.

This is likely to become the standard reference on the cranial sutures for many years to come, and is an essential book for all practitioners of cranial manipulation.

4 out of 5 stars CRANIAL OSTEOPATHS MUST HAVE THIS BOOK.......2005-07-16

Anyone serious about cranial osteopathy and the nuts and bolts of the head would be foolish to not have this book.It simply brings the anatomy alive and makes for more clarity in the mind of the practitioner. A worthy investment equal to owning the bones.

Mervyn Peake's gothic masterpiece, the Gormenghast trilogy, begins with the superlative Titus Groan, a darkly humorous, stunningly complex tale of the first two years in the life of the heir to an ancient, rambling castle. The Gormenghast royal family, the castle's decidedly eccentric staff, and the peasant artisans living around the dreary, crumbling structure make up the cast of characters in this engrossing story. Peake's command of language and unique style set the tone and shape of an intricate, slow-moving world of ritual and stasis:
The walls of the vast room which were streaming with calid moisture, were built with gray slabs of stone and were the personal concern of a company of eighteen men known as the 'Grey Scrubbers'.... On every day of the year from three hours before daybreak until about eleven o'clock, when the scaffolding and ladders became a hindrance to the cooks, the Grey Scrubbers fulfilled their hereditary calling.
Peake has been compared to Dickens, Tolkien, and Peacock, but Titus Groan is truly unique. Unforgettable characters with names like Steerpike and Prunesquallor make their way through an architecturally stifling world, with lots of dark corners around to dampen any whimsy that might arise. This true classic is a feast of words unlike anything else in the world of fantasy. Those who explore Gormenghast castle will be richly rewarded. --Therese Littleton

                                                              Book Description

An undisputed classic of epic fantasy, Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast novels represent one of the most brilliantly sustained flights of Gothic imagination. For the first time in years, Titus Groan, the first book in this timeless series, is available in an individual paperback volume, complete with striking new packaging.

As the novel opens, Titus, heir to Lord Sepulchrave, has just been born. He stands to inherit the miles of rambling stone and mortar that form Gormenghast Castle. Inside, all events are predetermined by a complex ritual whose origins are lost in history and the castle is peopled by dark characters in half-lit corridors. Dreamlike and macabre, Peake's extraordinary novel is one of the most astonishing and fantastic works in modern English fiction.

Among the fascinating aspects of this book, is the repeated experience of finding yourself in the middle of the scenes. The descriptions and writing style are absolutely unique, and you find yourself remembering with great clarity some of the scenery and events. If you want action and quick moving events, stay away. But if you truly enjoy great literature and want a reading experience unlike anything else, then grab this book. It is truly a unique experience.

Plot: The Groan Family has ruled the land of Gormenghast for over seventy generations. Gormenghast consists of an enormous castle, home to the Groan Family; the Mud Dwellers who live around the outside of the castle; wilderness. The story starts with the birth of a new Groan heir, Titus, and ends shortly after his first birthday is described. The royal family of Gormenghast, and all the inhabitants of the royal castle, adhere to rituals as if they were the food and oxygen upon which they are sustained, and almost everyone strives for a following of traditional that has become crystallized and has spawned a horror and abhorrence of change. But, an element of change has crept into their world of almost-rock-solid sameness, and that element is not named "Titus," as Titus is all set to be groomed as the Prime Maintainor of Tradition. The element of change is named Steerpike.

Steerpike is a very strange character, as he is both villain and hero. He is clever, ambitious, ruthless, and charming. He starts as a kitchen boy, and is destined to always be a kitchen servant. But, Steerpike is the Enemy of Destiny, as he refuses to accept the narrow path upon which he has been told to walk. While everyone else in Gormenghast strives to fulfill his or her rigid role to perfection, Steerpike steps off that path, takes cuts, trips people, charms people, manipulates everyone, and accomplishes two amazing things: he rises above his Station in Life; he breathes life into everyone, challenges them to try to out-think him, and creates that true horror called "Something New."

This book is extremely hard to classify into a genre. There are strong elements of fantasy, as Gormenghast was created in the mind of Mervyn Peake, but there is nothing magical, other-worldly (as in alien), or supernatural here. There are small, quiet, slothlike elements of creeping terror and suspense, but it is not a true horror novel. It is a high, slow, semi-farcical drama, playing out in an unreal land populated by unreal characters, who show elements of all-too-real flaws that we all know in small amounts.

Why do I mention Melville in my review title? Mervyn Peake's writing style actually stands alone, but I think it has some kinship with that of Herman Melville. "Titus Groan" is an incredibly detailed book, that can take pages to describe a scene that could be described in one-quarter of the words used. The pace can be arduously slow. And, tangents and side-stories abound. These factors could be the ingredients for a truly awful book, and Mr. Peake tip-toed along the edge of that, but he never stepped over the edge. While this book is an incredible chore to read, one other thing is equally true: Once you start, you feel compelled to keep going, no matter how challenging, and how daunting, that might be.

Actually, I think that the closest author to Mervyn Peake, in style and topic, is Gene Wolfe. "Titus Groan" and Mr. Wolfe's long, interconnected series ("The Book of the New Sun," "The Book of the Long Sun," "The Book of the Short Sun") share a love of detail, a penchant for tangents, complex characters, and nearly-poetic prose.

I have finished "Titus Groan" and will proceed to the next "Gormenghast" book, with a mixture of trepidation and eagerness. I expect to survive the ordeal, happy but not unscathed.

P.S.: Let yourself admire Steerpike, but trust him not!

5 out of 5 stars Gormenghast trilogy - could it be read better by anyone else?.......2005-11-12

I began to fall for the wonders of the world of Titus and Gormenghast after reading Titus Groan. The complexity and intensity of the language at times feels more like poetry than prose. For more info on the trilogy itself read the editorial review at http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0879516283/103-7360864-2418208?v=glance&n=283155&v=glance. If you can imagine Dickens writing gothic fantasy with the linguistic range of a poet then you are close. After buying the Audiobook trilogy by Michael Williams I can't recommend it highly enough. His voice is as rich as the characters that he is required to give life to. By turns crackling, humorous, bitter, angry, pathetic, depressed, ludicrous: Michael Williams voice catches the many moods and characters of these world's inhabitants and manages to convey the spidery, rasping, cloistered, dark and gothic atmosphere. If Amazon don't have it ask them to stock it! Also don't be put off by what some people say about the third book the third book is a classic if only for the character of Muzzlehatch.

5 out of 5 stars 'There should be no rich, no poor, no strong, no weak,' ..........2005-03-01

.... said Steerpike, methodically pulling the legs off the stag beetle, one by one as he spoke. 'Equality is the great thing, equality is everything.'

Extravagant? Yes it is! But what a wonderful type of extravagance. This is a fantasy novel like no other. I first read this novel many, many years ago and shared it with some of my special friends. And then, when I got married, I so loved reading it to my wife. Since then I have seen the television series ('Gormenghast' - based on this novel and its sequel). Now I picked the book up again and it's as enthralling, fascinating, captivating as ever.

Many novels introduce us to one or two memorable characters and detail their interaction - the tensions and the bonding. But in 'Titus Groan' Mervyn Peake creates a whole galaxy of characters - all extravagant and extreme - and then constrains them in such a tight environment. You could compare Gormenghast to another isolated society; that described in W H Hudson's 'A Crystal Age', but these worlds are very different. The interactions are thus intensified. For all their extremeness I wondered if Gormenghast and the people living there were no more than an analogy of a family - a group of people that allows itself controlled intimacies that it does not offer to the wider world.

'Titus Groan' separates itself from that other great fantasy world of 'Lord of the Rings' by its constrained boundaries. This is not a travel story ranging across wide horizons. It is a travel story of the human mind. It has horror, it has madness, it has dedication, and above all it has the most extraordinary vision and humour. There are four great scenes not to be missed - the burning of the library, Titus's first Birthday, the battle between Flay and Swelter, and the earling.
