In A Window Across the River, author Brian Morton raises a question most writers ask themselves at some point: is it OK to follow your muse when the artistic result may hurt your loved ones?

Nora struggles constantly with this issue--it seems her best characters are always based on the less than attractive qualities of close friends and family. With first-hand knowledge of the havoc this can wreak, she finds herself stuck in a writer's block (and a stagnant relationship) and decides to contact an old love. When Nora reaches out to him, Isaac is having his own creative difficulties, worrying that his artistic integrity has plummeted since he can't seem to find anything he wants to photograph any more. The artists' reconnection is inspiring for their work, but threatens to ruin their relationship.

There isn't much action here--most pages are filled with the internal thoughts of Nora and Isaac. We meet a lot of walk-on characters, whose sole purpose seems to be getting us out of the main characters' heads for a moment. But in the end, the story is an engaging one, filled with funny insights about relationships ("when our lovers try to leave us, we suddenly become lawyers"), and driven by two compelling characters we come to know inside and out. --Brangien Davis

Book Description

Isaac and Nora haven't seen each other in five years, yet when Nora phones Isaac late one night, he knows who it is before she's spoken a word. Isaac, a photographer, is relinquishing his artistic career, while Nora, a writer, is seeking to rededicate herself to hers.

Fueled by their rediscovered love, Nora is soon on fire with the best work she's ever done, until she realizes that the story she's writing has turned into a fictionalized portrait of Isaac, exposing his frailties and compromises and sure to be viewed by him as a betrayal. How do we remain faithful to our calling if it estranges us from the people we love? How do we remain in love after we have seen the very worst of our loved ones? These are some of the questions explored in a novel that critics are calling "an absolute pleasure" (The Seattle Times).

1 out of 5 stars Negativity abounds..........2007-05-22

The characters of Nora and Isaac are two of the most selfish, self-absorbed whiners I've ever read in any book. I became so uninterested in them and their so-called problems that I almost gave up on reading this book (something I hate to do). I just found them to over-whelmingly annoying. What's so bad about their lives? The author focuses on every negative aspect of these characters' lives, nothing positive. Because of this, I found I cared nothing about them. I found myself wanting to tell them to shut up, grow up and get on with life. Don't waste your time on this one.

2 out of 5 stars Two, MAYBE three, stars...but that would be a stretch..........2007-05-17

This book was really disappointing. I didn't go in with high expectations, but I guess I did expect to see an interesting character study if nothing else. Even on that level it didn't pan out. The characters weren't particularly engaging, nor were they very believable. I felt that the author didn't really understand them himself. There were moments of greatness -- some of which were really funny -- but unfortunately, these events were strung together with dull, inconsistent, and trite events that added nothing, and moreover distracted, from the story. I did like the ending, which others probably won't, because I hate neat and tidy conclusions. So, that's a positive. Can't say I'm sold on this author. Like the characters in his book, I think he is at a crossroads, needing to decide what he wants to do with his life. I wouldn't say he needs to give up writing -- I wouldn't say that -- but, I do think he needs to reflect on what he does well, and what he doesn't. Definitely can use some work...

I purchased this book at a 1/2 Price bookstore. While it held my interest enough to finish, I probably should not have started it!

5 out of 5 stars A rare treat and an excellent book.......2006-12-07

I read this book on a long airplane trip and was so disappointed that I finished the book before I reached my destination. I read through the book again to find (and write down) some of my favorite passages and zingers. Any negative reviews may reflect a lack of attention to the words and characters, and a preoccupation with the plot. The writing style is very engaging and worthy of reading a second time just to dig for the pearls of wisdom and insight within the pages.
This was a new author for me but I intend to read all of his books, and with high expectations.

4 out of 5 stars Window to the Heart.......2006-06-05

There are no grand epiphanies is Brian Morton's work, and that is the beauty of reading his writing. He focuses on the nuances of characters, their inner lives, thoughts, feelings. We get to know them so well, that when they connect with other characters, we know how and why. Nora and Isaac are no exception. I find all of Brian Morton's work subtle, tender and old fashioned and look forward to reading his next novel.

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful Luchetti Brothers story by Lori Handeland.......2005-08-30

Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques

Aaron Luchetti is lost. Fourteen years ago he was a young man full of purpose, longing to help others by wanting to become a priest. Then for some reason unknown to all but him, he returns home to his family as a new man - unhappy, quiet, no longer wanting to be in the Church. No one understood why until a young girl appeared on their doorstep.

Nicole Houston has lived a life no child should ever experience. Dumped at a Church as a baby, unwanted and unloved, her life never improved. She ended up in Vegas working as a stripper at the tender age of sixteen. Then one night of love with a man bound for the Priesthood set her on a new path... as a mother.

When Rayne Houston discovers her mother had kept her from her father for thirteen years by saying he was dead, she's furious. With only a young orphan called "The Timinator" as her companion, she takes off cross-country to find her father in The Daddy Quest. When she arrives at the Luchetti home, secrets are revealed and shocks abound. Though her running away temporarily reunited her parents, is it enough to convince them both that one man's sin is another person's salvation?

When the Luchetti family was introduced in The Farmer's Wife, readers knew there were stories to tell for these five brothers. This story is the first of the mini series, though not the first read by this reviewer. As always, Lori Handeland pens an emotional tale that will keep one turning those pages until the last one is reached. The plot is strong, and the secondary story lines presented only add to the whole story.

Aaron and Nicole are meant for each other, though it takes them a while to figure that out. Nicole's whole life is her daughter and her best friend at the halfway house where she turned her life around. When she discovers the gift given her in the form of her pregnancy, she is afraid to let Aaron know, for she doesn't want to ruin his life. Sacrificing her desires for the good of others, makes her much more like Aaron then she'd have thought. Aaron is torn over what he considers his failure to God and lives with the guilt every day of his life. Learning he is a father helps him realize what has been missing in his life.

Readers will love the side stories and secondary characters found in this book. This reviewer was especially taken with "The Timinator" and found herself laughing out loud sometimes and getting teary eyed over the plight of this wonderful child. Readers will be longing for his happy ending as much as they hope for Aaron's and Nicole's. Rayne is a wonderful child, wise for her years due to the life she lives with her mother. It will amaze one to see just how much she knows about the world, though she never loses the innocence all children should have for as long as possible. Hints are given to the personalities of the other brothers in the family, and readers will find themselves eager to spend more time with the wonderful Luchetti clan.

THE DADDY QUEST by Lori Handeland
        May 1, 2005

In THE DADDY QUEST, Lori Handeland has created a set of characters that stand out. The main female protagonist is an ex-stripper and has an illegitimate daughter who happened to be fathered by a future priest. Nicole, the ex-stripper, has a best friend Janet, who was an ex-nun and now currently is the creator of a very popular comic strip (along the vein of the super hero). Janet also runs a home for women, and this is where Nicole lives, with her teenage daughter Rayne.

The novel opens with Rayne, who has befriended yet another outcast, this time a young boy who is very hyperactive and calls himself Rat. Rayne has no real friends, mainly because she refuses to conform and be part of the mainstream. Because of this, school is painful for her. She spends as little time at school, and what time she has left she is helping out the homeless and the unloved and unwanted, taking in strays when she can.

When Rayne accidentally finds out that her father is not deceased but is alive and well in the state of Illinois, she and Rat (now called Tim) run away and they travel by bus on their "Daddy Quest". In the meantime, Nicole is worried to death over her missing daughter, but eventually gets in contact with Aaron Luchetti, the father of Rayne, and she too gets a surprise: Aaron never became a priest and has been living all this time with his family on their farm in Illinois.

The story then moves to Illinois, where Rayne arrives to find her new found family, confronts her mother and her father, and the reader is introduced to a slew of characters. From this novel, it is obvious that the author had intended it to be a start to a series of books, and this reader is looking forward to reading them all. Ms Handeland knows how to write well-rounded characters and for the most part, I feel that this is the key to writing a good romance. THE DADDY QUEST is a recommended romance for those who enjoy the genre.

4 out of 5 stars Growing Through Psychological Upheavals To a New Wholeness.......2002-09-13

The authors of STORMY SEARCH FOR THE SELF bring a unique set of life experiences to this book. Christina Grof has been through her own tumultuous psychospiritual awakening, while her husband Stanislav Grof, M.D. brings the insights he gained from his seventeen years as a pioneering LSD psychotherapist.

During the birth of her first child, at one point Christina felt something "snap" inside of her, and powerful electrical-like energies began rushing through her body, while brilliant white fireworks exploded in her head. These and similar symptoms of kundalini-energy arousal plagued her life from that day onward, and eventually she turned to alcohol for relief, resulting after several years in alcohol addiction. When she "hit bottom" with her alcoholism, the sense of total physical, emotional, and spiritual bankruptcy was the internal dying experience or "ego death" (the turning point in many psychospiritual crises) that she needed; from that day on, her kundalini symptoms disappeared and never returned.

As the Grofs began telling others about Christina's stormy spiritual awakening, they discovered that other people had been through similarly difficult periods of psychological instability and growth. However, others' troublesome symptoms had been triggered by a variety of events other than kundalini arousal, ranging from a near-death experience or a mystical experience, to unsought development of psychic powers or spirit guides or channeling or shamanic-initiation illness, to encounters with UFO-related otherwordly visitors, to psychiatrist John Perry's psychosis-like "return to the center" (which the book left me with only a vague understanding of; I wish the authors had explained this condition more clearly and completely). The Grofs also concluded that some addictions (like Christina's alcoholism) can be a sign of a "spiritual emergency" in progress. ("Spiritual emergency" is the authors' term for any period of emotional turbulence and/or mental confusion which is caused by a traumatic experience in a person's life; such conditions always have the potential for healing and growth leading to a higher sanity, deeper stability, and greater wholeness than ever before.)

The Grofs offer practical guidelines for anyone going through a stormy psychospiritual awakening, such as listening to music while expressing your feelings in dancing or other movement, while at the same time singing or chanting or otherwise vocalizing. They also suggest how family and friends can help, such as by remaining nonjudgemental, keeping your sense of humor, offering supportive physical contact like hugs, and trusting the process to eventually resolve itself provided it is simply supported and encouraged.

One way to encourage and support the growth process is simply by breathing more quickly and deeply than usual. During Christina's crisis, the Grofs had discovered that hyperventilation causes symptoms to temporarily intensify, eventually (after an hour or so of fast, deep breathing) to reach a climax, and then to subside for several days or weeks. Repeated hyperventilaton sessions--especially when done in a group with other hyperventilators, which greatly potentiates the process--results in permanent cessation of troublesome symptoms.

Two chapters of this book stand out for me. One is devoted to outlining Stanislav's new map of the psyche, which is based on his experience as an LSD therapist. Nearest the psyche's surface are repressed memories from childhood; deeper within lies the experiential (psychosomatic and emotional) memory of one's birth, as well as one's unconscious fear of death; deepest of all one encounters the spiritual or "transpersonal" dimension of the self, which can mediate contact with the divine during healing transcendent mystical or "peak" experiences. This new view of the subconscious helped me to understand how distressing psychological symptoms are formed, and how they can be cured

Another chapter explores the history of psychological crises, such as aboriginal rites of passage, the ancient Greek "mystery" religions, and the hero's journey in mythology; there is also a section on the teachings of Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and Judaism about spiritual growth and enlightenment.

Another noteworthy feature of this book is the clear guidelines the authors provide for distinguishing a psychological growth crisis from psychosis. Since spiritual awakenings are often mis-diagnosed as psychosis, this section should prove quite useful.

STORMY SEARCH FOR THE SELF has reassured me on my own psychotherapeutic journey that I can indeed trust the intrinsic wisdom of the psyche, and the natural unfolding of my path of growth, to lead eventually to wholeness, as I simply support it with hyperventilation and other therapeutic techniques.

Other books I like are Stanislav Grof's BEYOND THE BRAIN, and also his THE ADVENTURE OF SELF-DISCOVERY. I also enjoyed SOUL RETRIEVAL by Sandra Ingerman, Whitley Strieber's COMMUNION, John Mack's PASSPORT TO THE COSMOS, and Betty Eadies's inspiring near-death account EMBRACED BY THE LIGHT, as well as THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF GOPI KRISHNA.

4 out of 5 stars SPONTANEOUS PSYCHOSPIRITUAL AWAKENING CRISES.......2002-06-29

STORMY SEARCH FOR THE SOUL brings together Christina Grof's tumultuous kundalini/alcoholism crisis with her husband Stanislav Grof's seventeen years' experience as an LSD psychotherapist.

When the couple began sharing with others about Christina's stormy psychospiritual awakening (which began with the birth of her first child as powerful electrical-like energy coursed through her body and brilliant white fireworks exploded in her head), they discovered that many other people had been through similarly difficult, dramatic experiences. Yet instead of kundalini awakening, others had been confronted with a variety of diverse events, from near-death or mystical experiences, to UFO/extraterrestrial encounters, to shamanic opening, to development of psychic powers or channeling or spirit guides; the Grofs also concluded that some cases of alcoholism or other addiction are due to a potentially positive spiritual awakening that is trying to happen; and they describe several additional types of "spiritual emergencies," as they term these sorts of crises.

Although often mis-diagnosed as psychosis, a psychospiritual awakening crisis can be worked through, using techniques such as hyperventilation, resulting in growth and a positive resolution, just as Christina's alcoholism-kundalini crisis resolved when she hit bottom with her alcoholism, helped along by her husband's knowledge from LSD psychotherapy.

For indeed, Stanislav had noticed that his wife's symptoms were similar to what people go through in LSD therapy (in large part reliving birth, and confronting death). He dovotes a chapter to describing the levels of the psyche that he discovered as an LSD therapist (the surface layer of childhood traumatic memories, and deeper in the unconscious the experiential memory of birth, while deepest of all lies the transpersonal or spiritual aspect of the self). With his understanding, and the couple's discovery that hyperventilation can resolve troubling symptoms in a way quite similar to how LSD therapy resolves problems (by reliving birth and facing one's mortality over several dozen intense, dramatic therapy sessions), Christina had reached a new stability, and freedom from her kundalini symptoms which ended her hunger for alcohol to blunt the symptoms.

The authors offer guidelines for distinguishing a psychospiritual awakening from psychosis, which should be helpful for anyone falsely diagnosed as psychotic, or anyone wondering if they are going crazy (which is a not uncommon feeling in a spiritual emergency).

They also offer suggestions for working through one's symptoms and so cooperating with one's growth process, such as singing and dancing and yelling to music; also included are tips for friends and family who want to help, such as trusting the process to eventually resolve itself with encouragement and support.

I have been going through my own psychospiritual journey of awakening for about fifteen years, and I found STORMY SEARCH FOR THE SELF to be quite reassuring and helpful in trusting my own growth process...I recognized some of my own symptoms in the pages of this self-help masterpiece.

I have found STORMY SEARCH... more useful since I have also read other books such as Stanislav Grof's comprehensive distillation of all he learned from his almost two decades as an LSD psychotherapist, BEYOND THE BRAIN: BIRTH, DEATH, AND TRANSCENDENCE IN PSYCHOTHERAPY; THE ADVENTURE OF SELF-DISCOVERY, about the Grof's hyperventilation therapy technique (which I've found useful in resolving several severe panic attacks about a year ago in my own life); Sandra Ingerman's SOUL RETRIEVAL: MENDING THE FRAGMENTED SELF, a modern shamanic view of welcoming home one's lost inner child self which may have split off in childhood due to trauma; THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF GOPI KRISHNA, about his kundalini awakening; Whitley Strieber's and John Mack's books about otherworldly visitors (such as COMMUNION and PASSPORT TO THE COSMOS); LSD PSYCHOTHERAPY, Grof's guidbook for psychedelic therapists; and Betty Eadie's near-death bestseller EMBRACED BY THE LIGHT.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful, if you seek validation.......2002-01-30

The title says it all. The path one treads on the search for the Self is at times fraught with unpleasant experiences. Memories, traumas and negativity which the human entity identifies with, resurface during this quest, and must be dealt with if one is to 'grow'. The book sets this much out well, but fails to go beyond. Or rather, it would seem that one would need the help of a Grof-trained person for dealing with the storm.

5 out of 5 stars Potentially Life Saving.......2001-03-18

An excellent book for anyone who's ever wondered if they are having a psychic experience or a psychotic experience. Details the Grof's personal experiences and lists other types of spiritual emergencies. Also gives excellent advice about how to cope with a spiritual crisis. Everyone involved in spiritual pursuits should read this book because the potential negative side effects of meditation, prayer, etc. are rarely mentioned elsewhere.

            5 out of 5 stars a recommended resource.......2000-05-17

While I have reservations about the work done by the Grofs, I heartily recommend this book to anyone suffering from a crisis of spirit, particularly when accompanied by the symptoms of what used to be called shamanic illness (believe me, you'll know it if you have it). I don't know how many people who've negotiated this crisis who have told me they wished they had a resource to normalize their extrahuman experiences, experiences they believed (and were told by doctors and shrinks) represented the onset of insanity rather than a unique gift highly prized in more spiritually aware cultures of the past. This book is such a resource.

                  Book Description

From the nationally renowned Lobel's—New York City's first family of butchers—come 130 recipes revealing the secrets to getting the most from meat and poultry. These recipes serve up a wide range of cooking styles and flavors, from grilled steak with horseradish butter and braised ribs in ginger beer to spicy ground chicken kebabs and slow-roasted lamb in a pistachio crust. A chapter on game features delicious recipes for duck, quail, pheasant, rabbit, and venison—meats that can now be found at most local gourmet markets. With clear descriptions of the different cuts of meat, the best knives and cooking equipment for the job, the importance of the proper cooking temperatures, plus simple freezing and meat safety tips, Lobel's Prime Cuts provides the last word on meat and poultry, from the folks who know it best.

3 out of 5 stars An average book with good, but carelessly written recipes........2004-12-16

`Lobel's Prime Cuts' is a cookbook written, purportedly, by five members of the Lobel family who own and operate an excellent butcher shop on the upper west side of Manhattan. On the face of it, this makes the book an obvious advertisement for the butcher shop, or, more exactly, for their Internet ordering service.

This doesn't mean the book is not good. Emeril has put his name to some pretty good books that are really shameful advertisements for his restaurants and retail products. He has especially managed to corner the market on pretty good books for kids' cooking. So, does the Lobel's expertise in butchery translate to expertise in cookbook writing?

My overall impression is that this is an average cookbook with a decent collection of somewhat poorly written recipes and only a small amount of inside information on how to deal with good meat. The value of the book is just barely saved by a lower than average price which befits its primary role as a promotion for their retail business.

The few tips I learned from this book about handling meat are that:

                  - One should freeze or refrigerate meat in the packaging in which it was sold at the store.
                  - Duck is one meat which is best bought frozen. Almost all else should be bought fresh.
                  - Meat holds its freshness in the freezer a much shorter time in summer due to the high humidity.
                  - Don't try to catch a knife if it falls to the floor. Let it come to rest before picking it up.
                  - There are three levels of coarseness in sharpening stones. The middle level is the most commonly used.

This isn't much from a book by meat experts. It is amazing to discover that there is not a single diagram of primals from butchering beef, pork, or lamb. The book spends a fair amount of time with the care and sharpening of knives, without a single picture on how to sharpen knives. They would have done a whole lot better to simply recommend, as Alton Brown does, that you should not sharpen a knife yourself, but give the job to a professional. Dear Alton is mistaken when he says professionals do this. I know very well that professional chefs sharpen their own knives and the CIA even has a whole book dedicated to the subject, `The Professional Chef's Knife Kit' which I heartily recommend to anyone willing to develop knife sharpening skills.

My initial take on the recipes was that they were pretty good until I started encountering some with pretty serious omissions such as the recipe for the Cuban sandwich which neglects to tell the cook how and when to cut the pork loin before putting the slices on the bread. I also had serious reservations about their pork and sauerkraut recipe that used pork loin. This recipe is basically a braise, so meat on the bone with a fair amount of cartilage is better than the very lean loin. The book in general seems to lean heavily toward the more expensive cuts of meat. There is also virtually no notice of some of the more interesting methods for dealing with Porky. One recipe gives a technique for brining thick pork chops, yet the word brining doesn't even appear in the index. If you have a special interest in pork, definitely pass this book by and get yourself a copy of `Bruce Aidells's Complete Book of Pork'. This excellent book gives you everything you may have expected in the Lobel's book. On the plus side, the few recipes for stocks at the end of the book are very simple with little chance of producing an excessively cloudy stock.

If you want a very good book on cooking meat, get the volume `How to Cook Meat' by cooking experts Chris Schlesinger and John Willoughby. This work is not limited to grilling for which these authors are so justly famous.

Aside from some good comments on buying meat and selecting it for particular recipes, the Lobel's book practically nothing you might expect from a book by professional butchers. My three stars means that it is simply an average book which is saved from two stars by a less than average list price. I predict this volume will quickly find its way to the discount piles.

                  Book Description

During the 1860s and 1870s, "Tiffany Timers," as they were called, became the preferred timepiece of an impressive list of clients that included well-known public figures, wealthy businessmen-Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Morgan, Whitney, and Astor, to name but a few-and many other luminaries, including President Ulysses S. Grant. This sumptuous volume surveys the design and development of the glorious timepieces Tiffany & Co. has created since its inception 150 years ago as the first and finest purveyor of Swiss-made watch and clock movements in America.

In this latest book in his beautiful Tiffany series, company design director John Loring celebrates the role Tiffany has played in making the watch a treasured possession, a vital component of every jewelry collection, and an indispensable fashion accessory for men and women. Lavish illustrations, featuring not only photographs of magnificent watches and clocks but also exquisite work studies by the designers, complement the colorful and informative text. This book is a must-have for all lovers of Tiffany and collectors of watches and clocks. AUTHOR BIO: John Loring, Tiffany's design director for the past 25 years, is the author of this season's Greetings from Andy: Christmas at Tiffany's and seven previous Abrams books, including Tiffany in Fashion, Tiffany Flora & Fauna, Louis Comfort Tiffany at Tiffany & Co. , and Tiffany's 20th Century. He lives in New York City.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful resource for the vintage Tiffany timepiece owner/collector/admirer.......2006-08-18

A wonderful history of the Company and the time peices they sold. Beautifully illustrated with archival photos not seen elsewhere, this significant book gives a real 'feel' for the quality and enviability of Tiffany, especially in the early years. Unfortunately, too little time is spent on the really early, priceless pieces, with the emphasis on the more 'modern' (post Depression era) pieces....not surprising, since the author was the director of design for so many of these later peices, that the book often feels a little too self congratulatory. Still, for the owner/collector/admirer of the early T&Co. pieces, this book is a must.

I like to think of myself as having an eclectic style; I have many influences. I like some country and traditional elements. I had heard favorable things about Colefax and Fowler, so I thought this book would be a good representation of English country style. If this is the best, I would hate to see the worst. I don't think readers that want to explore English country should start with this book. It might turn them off. However, long-time fans of tradional and country styles might derive more benefit.

5 out of 5 stars essential decorating reference book.......2001-08-01

Having seen interior shots of homes decorated by the late Roger Banks-Pye I was quite keen to see a collected body of his work. It was as impressive as I thought it would be. Quirky - yes, inspiring - definitely, Banks-Pye would have gone on to be one of the major names in decorating and design. From his unique treatment of his apartment (formerly owned by Somerset Maugham) to his signature blue and white style found in his country home, everything about Interior Inspirations merely made one want to see more of his design principles. A very good idea source, and sadly, the sole compendium of Banks-Pye's work. Don't miss this classic if you like rooms that are warm, inviting, and eccentrically eclectic!

                        4 out of 5 stars excellent suggestions.......2000-08-27

I am an interior decorator, and this book has wonderful suggestions for the beginner and seasoned pro. I abosolutely loved the ideas, and I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in decorating!

5 out of 5 stars Elegance, charm, and wit.......2000-07-12

I have collected decorating books for many years, and this book is my all-time favorite. Banks-Pye's exquisite taste, combined with his humor, originality, and style, are reflected on every page. For those of us who cannot afford to hire a professional decorator, but want to create a comfortable, inviting, well-appointed home, this book is a treasure trove of ideas. My decorating budget is far, far less than that of a Banks-Pye client, yet I have been able to adopt a number of his suggestions. Although Banks-Pye is, sadly, no longer with us, his charm endures in these pages. If upper-crust British-style decorating appeals to you, you can't go wrong with this book.

                          Book Description

Discover Deeper Meaning in Art and Expand Your Understanding of Life

For many, art provides a satisfying and stimulating aesthetic experience. Symbols in Art reveals that there is even more. It tells how the hidden communications in art provide insights into life in ways that can become deeply personal and rewarding. And it shows how to access them.

The underlying message of this book is that the essence of life is joy, and joy is found through love, balance and renewal. This thesis is demonstrated in numerous full-color plates of Symbolic masterworks and accompanying explanations. It is substantiated with a clear, simple eloquence.

Each two-page spread is a complete and whole thought, a stepping stone to awareness and the appreciation of images and the stories behind them—both in the paintings of classical Symbolic artists and in the author's own contemporary Symbolic works. Whether the book is read from cover to cover or opened to any page, the eye is delighted, emotions are activated, the mind is engaged on all its levels and the spirit soars. Its thoughtful insights are experienced as much as they are seen and comprehended.

Just what does the book propose?

That symbols are the universal language of the unseen in art.
That stories represent a rich portion of the meaning of visual art.
That Symbolism is a vital artistic expression during troubled times and that Symbolic art heralds the message of inspiration and hope.

Symbols in Art provides a fascinating exploration into the meanings of symbols and provides keys for unlocking their real messages. It expands our awareness of love, balance and light in our lives and it directs us to visions of a brighter future. It does all this and more with beauty, style, intelligence, and elegance.

                          5 out of 5 stars A Visual Delight.......2003-11-15

I really like this book. As a mere neophyte in art appreciation, Symbols in Art taught me to look beyond the color and composition of a work of art to discover subtle messages from the artist-messages that comment on a range of topics that are part of the human condition. That being said, this book is a visual delight. Mr. Polakoff's choice of artwork-master works as well as his own works-are visual touchstones to the crisp, concise text. The content was easy to digest for a newcomer like myself, yet I can imagine that there is much in this book that will appeal to the seasoned connoisseur.

5 out of 5 stars Explores hypothetical, emotional, and evocative issues.......2003-11-13

Symbols In Art: The Hidden Keys To Love, Balance, And Renewal by Serge Polakoff adroitly combines full-color artwork (including many classical pieces), with an erudite and learned discourse concerning the meaning and power of symbols. Very highly recommended reading, especially for students of art, art history, and graphic design, Symbols In Art is superbly articulated with four symbols associated with the classical four elements of earth, water, air, and fire, the informed and informative text accessibly explores hypothetical, emotional, and evocative issues embracing the soul of humanity and the expression of that soul through artistic creations.
