Book Description

In Affairs at Thrush Green, Miss Read continues the fortunes of the Thrush Green families whom we last met in Gossip from Thrush Green. Here we follow the kindly vicar, Charles Henstock, to the neighboring Lulling, after his home was burned to the ground at the end of the earlier novel. Going to a new church is never easy, even in the best of times; indeed, poor Dr. Henstock encounters some very redoubtable females in Lulling. A full-scale power struggle erupts over the question of kneeling cushions for the Lady Chapel, and other difficulties revolve around the crotchety old sexton Albert Piggott. Meanwhile, a mysterious stranger arrives at the Fuschia Bush cafe, and its rivalry with the Two Pheasants becomes more acute. One knows, however, that Miss Read will make all come right in the end.

5 out of 5 stars A waik down Miss read's memory lane.......2007-03-18

In 1989 I had an unforunate surgery. I was recoverying from the latter, when I first read about "Thrush Green". I became enchanted with funny chractors in the villiage and Miss Read's delightful dry wit. I have never stopped returning to her books to smile and see who is doing what. I don't think there will be another exactly like this insightful author. I would love to be this dear woman's friend.

5 out of 5 stars Another cozy visit..........2006-07-31

This is another cozy visit to Thrush Green and all our friends there. So much more enjoyable than the copy-cat Jan Karon books. Any Karon fans who haven't discovered Thrush Green are in for a treat. There are many books in this series and it is always fun to catch up with old friends.

The excesses of the young Marquis of Vidal are even wilder than his father’s before him. Not for nothing is the
reckless duelist and gamester called “the Devil’s Cub.”

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite of the 18th Century Heyers.......2007-04-03

I took the downloaded version on a trip and was absolutely entranced by the story. I had forgotten how much I liked this book. Heyer's characters are lively, her descriptions economical but always on point. Her secondary characters are often hilarious. The scene where Mrs. Challoner tries her inept hand at social blackmail, and Mrs. Marling tries to figure out what this apparently insane woman wants, is very, very funny as Mrs. Marling first takes Mrs. Challoner to be a dunning dressmaker and the two talk at lovely crosspurposes.

Now as to the narrator of the audiobook-- I thought he sounded very nasal. I can't recommend him as the voice of Vidal, although it was possible after a while to forget about the voice and just go with the story. The publisher though should have made an effort to get a good period actor who can do an 18th century voice for this one.

              5 out of 5 stars Devil's Cub.......2007-03-10

This is my fourth copy of this book. I just adore the interaction of all the characters and the description of places and parties and clothes. I have worn out each of my previous copies to the point of falling apart.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Heyer's.......2006-04-07

This is my favorite Heyer's book that I have read. It has action, romance and humor. I couldn't put it down, (which is one of the ways I judge a book), and really enjoyed the entire read. Definately recommend this book to regency fans.

              3 out of 5 stars Great Novel!...But merely a "Fair" Audio Book!.......2006-03-22

I love many of Georgette Heyer's Regency novels, but Devil's Cub is among my favorites...particularly because it 'follows' These Old Shades (which will always be my all-time favorite!).
However, having said the above, I must now convey my disappointment with the "audio version" of Devil's Cub. I have listened to many audio books, and my favorites are the ones in which the "reader" is able to convey the author's male and female characters (and their emotions) through his/her vocal intonations, accents, etc.
Unfortunately, in this "audio version" of Devil's Cub, I found that the "reader" (Michael Drew) was not able to adequately portray Ms. Heyer's characters to my satisfaction. I understand that it is often difficult for a male to "read" a female character's dialogue with a "feminine" voice. Michael Drew did seem to have some difficulty in doing this; so that some of the female characters (such as Videl's Aunt Fanny) were portrayed with somewhat "sqreachey, &/or overly "missish" voices. But my biggest dislike was with Mr. Drew's portrayal of the main character's (Videl's) voice...which I found to be overly stilted and somewhat "lisping"! This was definitely NOT how I'd imagined the Duke of Avon's son would sound! I was so "put-off" by Videl's voice tones, that it became difficult at times for me to listen to this audio book!! However, I did prevail, and after I managed to ignore the vocal inconsistancies/inadequacies; I was able to enjoy hearing the novel that I'd already loved reading. I cannot however, say that I loved this audio book, in any way, manner or form...the way that I have always loved reading the written version of Devil's Cub. I have listened to other "audio versions" of Georgette Heyer's books (Frederica is a very good one) that were much more satisfying and enjoyable.

              3 out of 5 stars Devil's Cub.......2006-03-17

This sequel to "These Old Shades" is a little thin on plot. Basically a series of chases as the heroine runs away from the man she loves, who abducted her in a fit of pique. She doesn't want to bring him down to her level by marrying him, although he's already a murderer, gambler, and quite likely an alcoholic with no self-control and extremely selfish and devoted to having his own way. Hmmmmm... Of course he's rich and handsome, which makes it all OK.

I really like some Georgette Heyer books - "The Unknown Ajax" is very funny, "The Reluctant Widow" is witty and entertaining, "The Toll-Gate," which is a thriller and very effective, and others with more likeable characters and more interesting plots. If you are new to Heyer, read some of her better books first before reading this one.

When lovely, saucy Mary Challoner had practiced her bold deception upon the hot-blooded, fiery-tempered young Marquis of Vidal-substituting herself for the young wench he had thought to carry off to France-she had little notion that he would grimly hold her to her part of the bargain. Nowe he had left her, and she was alone, a stranger in a strange land, prey to the intrigues of glittering, heartless 18th century Paris.

Science fiction is a field of literature that has great interest and great controversy among its writers and critics. This book examines the roots, history, development, current status, and future directions of the field through articles contributed by well-respected science fiction writers, teachers, and critics. This book can be used as a textbook for courses in theory as well as courses in science fiction literature and science fiction writing.

4 out of 5 stars presents a deeper look at Science Fiction.......2006-01-18

Noted science fiction author and critic James Gunn has amassed a set of lectures and papers analysing science fiction. The authors attempt a serious look at what defines science fiction, as contrasted to other genres like mystery, romance or adventure. The hardest problem appears to be in drawing a good demarcation between science fiction and fantasy.

If you are a science fiction reader, here is a rare chance to get deeper look at your genre. Perhaps the essays might give you a better appreciation of what makes SF so distinctive.

It should be said that the essays are not light reading. Unlike breezy book reviews [like mine]. Some of the essays also provide a good survey of the trends over the decades in SF. And there are also numerous references to classic SF stories, like the Demolished Man and the Cold Equations. But you, presumably, are a fan, so you should recognise most of these stories.

5 out of 5 stars SF criticism strikes again... and hits.......2005-05-05

A wonderful compilation of essays edited by James Gunn and Matthew Candelaria. Some are out of print or hard to find canonical articles, such as 2 chapters from Darko Suvin's _Metamorphoses of Science Fiction_, other from Robert Scholes' _Structural Fabulation_, Alexei and Cory Panshin's «Science Fiction and the Dimension of Myth», or even David Ketterer's «The Apocalyptic Imagination...». Others are more recent or even written for the occasion, as is the case of Gary K. Wolfe's «Coming to Terms», on the almost impossible task to define the genre.
It is a wide ranging and impartial collection (it is very hard to find Suvin and the Panshins side by side on other compilations), which is a must if you have a theoretical interest on this literary genre (particularly teachers on any level), but also recommended for everyone who just reads SF for pleasure and wants to know a little more on its history and significance.
Will The Scarecrow Press and the editors be willing to have it on mass market paperback, thus reaching a wider audience?

This book does a good job of orienting an ACIM student to most that has been written about it minus Gary Renard's two books. For me it was a little boring at first simply because I had previously read Ken Wapnick's "Absence from Felicity" which in my opinion IS the complete story of ACIM. Mr. Miller starts with ACIM "light" material and progresses to the more intense material to include the Wapnick material. I enjoyed the critiques of ACIM. Specifically Needleman's reference to jumping into an inner transformative spiritual practice before one experiences an outer spiritual practice...."You could compare the esoteric core of a religion to a very pure, high-octane fuel. Put it into a Volkswagen, and the car will go like hell for a mile before it blows apart." What I really took away from this book was located in chapter 6. Roger Walsh's & Frances Vaughan's analysis of the world's great religions and what they have in common with ACIM. This part of the book offers what I consider great wisdom. Finally it just continues to fascinate me to read about the ruthless ACIM haters from the fundamental Christians. They are the ones who fear ACIM most. It is ironic that the one they worship as the Son of God is the same one who wrote ACIM. They fear a Divine thought system of forgiveness and that is exactly why He was crucified over two thousand years ago.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A Valuable Resource.......2006-04-27

This is a wonderful book, extremely well written by an informed, and talented author. He answers all the pertinent questions from history to heresy. If you're interested in the Course, read this book. If you've tried and failed to get through the Course, read this book. And if you think you're NOT interested in the Course, then by all means, read this book!

5 out of 5 stars To an Outsider..........2002-08-05

This book was extremely helpful in finding out exactly what the Course is all about.

When someone asked me last week what I thought of "A Course in Miracles", I realzied that although I had heard the name for years I knew *nothing* of what it was, where it came from, or what it taught.

Mr. Miller's book did a good job of explaining what the Course is, and the gist of it's message. In the course of this, he convinced me that Helen Schuckman had a genuine spiritual experience -- something I was prepared to doubt, before.

I am not a "seeker" -- I have an active & fulfilling spiritual life, that does not include the Course. And I have neither the time nor desire to read The Course as a primary text, simply to learn *about* it.

Because of this, I found Mr. Miller's book invaluable.

With this book Mr. Miller has done something for which Course students will be thankful for generations to come, detailed the unusual and complicated history of "A Course In Miracles." He has also interviewed and profiled the key players in Course commentary: Kenneth Wapnick PhD and Gloria Wapnick (founders of "Foundation for A Course In Miracles"), Marianne Williamson (author of "A Return to Love"), Gerald Jampolsky (author of "Love is Letting Go of Fear"), members and former members of Endeavor Academy are interviewed, and Tara Singh (author of "How to Learn From A Course In Miracles") is mentioned. Though not interviewed, the two Course co-scribes, Helen Schucman and William Thetford, are profiled as well (with a picture of them, the only picture in the book, included).

The Course is not easy to classify. It has Christian themes and terminology, but it's not Christianity. It has the compassion of Buddhism, but it's not Buddhist. It has Hindu-like non-duality, but is not Hindu. It has the Freudian analysis of the ego, yet it's not pure psychoanalysis. It was "channeled," but it's not Edgar Cayce. It is currently embraced mostly by those within the "New Age," but it contains no rituals or crystal gazing, no mention of UFOs or planetary alignment, no aura work, no meditations, no chants, no laying-on-of-hands, no directions for group work, no lessons on the development of psychic powers, and none of the "positive thinking" and prosperity consciousness that is the hallmark of most New Age paths. In fact, since the Course's aim is removing the blocks to the awareness of love's presence, Kenneth Wapnick has commented that the Course could even be termed "negativism" because it encourages its readers to look at, and not deny, the mess they have made of their own lives and minds. What category, then, does the Course fit into? None. It will have to define its own genre. This will be a long time coming; but by writing this book, D. Patrick Miller has aided in creating the category the Course must define for itself.

A fascinating thing about D. Patrick Miller is that while he is a student of the Course, he admits that there are aspects of the Course that he is not completely comfortable with - the Christian language of the Course being one, the exclusive use of male terms to refer to the Divine being another. Mr. Miller has even stated that the Course, and its origin, sometimes just seems "too strange" for him to believe. This frankness adds a dimension of honesty that any reader would appreciate. Mr. Miller is a beautiful writer, and this book not only details the interesting history of the Course and how it was scribed, it also gives a brief introduction to Course theory and metaphysics and how it compares to other religions. One of my favorite sections of this book is the "personal stories" section where "students" (to be a student of the Course simply means you read the three books [recently published as a three-in-one volume]) relate how they found the Course, how it has effected their lives, and how much of the Course theory they accept or reject (some students accept the Course theory completely, some accept only aspects of it, some mix the Course with other spiritual teachings).

As is my usual custom with books that touch me, I wrote to the author to thank him for his work. Mr. Miller kindly replied to my letter and even aided further in my understanding of Course theory. I am very thankful for the aid he gave me, and I am thankful that he wrote this book. I continue to reference "The Complete Story of the Course" from time to time and I am always amazed to find interesting passages that I seemed to have missed before. I always recommend this book to people interested in the Course, either as potential students or people simply curious about the phenomenon.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Early 20th (Twentieth) Century Stanley Tools - A Price Guide With 1909 & 1926 Catalog.......2007-09-07

If your are a collector of old woodworking tools, this is an ideal book to carry with you during that weekend flea market or antique shop search. The illustrations are also very useful when trying recliam old tools with missing parts. Some of the tool pricing seems to be a bit too high.

If you are a Stanley collector, this is a must have.

                                      3 out of 5 stars just OK.......2006-07-13

This book was just a representative sample of the tools that Stanley made. I was looking for a more comprehensive list and descriptive book. The information in the book could have been found on the internet.

2 out of 5 stars Stanley Tools book not really a genuine price guide........2002-04-10

For a book that claims to be a price guide, it is a rather dissapointing publication. The book consists entirely of reprinted Stanley catalogs from 1909 and 1926. The "price guide" to current values merely consists of a loose page inserted into the book. The loose, 2002-2003 current price guide page that I received was not even cut square! The prices quoted are questionable at best (a stanley #212 in "good" condition for $700!??. I'll take half a dozen, thanks.), with no genuine attempt to clarify price variation as a function of tool type or condition. In the introdcuction the editor so rightly points out that "We do not claim to be experts in the tool collecting field (and the) seperate price guide is only the opinion of the editor."

4 out of 5 stars Reprint Of A Classic Stanley Tools Book With Updated Pricing.......2000-08-24

The softbound, handy-sized book contains more than 1,200 black and white pictures and details of the tools. It is complete with the original indexes, making tool location easy. A special insert contains year 2001 pricing. Everyone interested in these historical tools will enjoy using this great reference work. Take it with you when you antique for old tools. The Art of the Router is much more than a "how to use a router" guide; it is an inspiring and exciting look at some truly creative designs by true artists using this highly versatile tool for the woodworker. Some of the projects described in detail are a circular mahogany mirror, an old-fashioned hourglass, a "Moon Box" chest in maple and black walnut, a puzzle box, a simple walnut stool, and dozens more projects by well-known woodworkers. Some of the loveliest projects are also some of the simplest, while some of the more unusual, like the koa, dogwood, and ebony telephone, will simply inspire the creativity and imagination of the reader with a router. Or, they might just motivate the routerless reader to get one, learn how to use it, and create new designs and applications. --Mark A. Hetts

This book has beautiful piece after beautiful piece, only a few of the simple ones have plans or secrets revealed. I specifically bought this book to see how a sculpted rocker was built and there was one page of text that really told nothing of how to build one. and a couple pages of pictures of different rockers made by that woodworker. The whole book was similar. Every time you turn the page wanting more to be written about a piece, it seems the author has moved on to another woodworker to showcase.

This book is filled with nothing more than frivolous and useless fluff (I simply will not refer to them as "ideas"). For example, putting a detective hat atop an "R" and turning its serif into a pipe is downright childish. Seriously, any good designer or anyone with common sense would steer clear of this visually-horrifying garbage. If you are at all serious about design, pick up any/all of the Jim Krause books. This one's going to the next library book sale.

I bought this book for my daughter, a graphic design student. She had borrowed it from a local library and said it was a "must have" that contained a wealth of knowledge and ideas. The service from Amazon was simply outstanding and my daughter was thrilled with her surprise!

As an 8-year veteran newspaper and magazine editor, I thought this book was great for jump starting creativity without having to read all the psychobabble or starving artist type talk that some other graphic design books I've browsed at bookstores. This book was instrumental in my redesign of a magazine that recently got me an award.
If you're a veteran looking for some basic concepts to play with and customize, this book is great. If your looking for a book that tells you why 8-point fonts work great on red backgrounds with purple elephants, then this is not the book you're looking for.

visually structured (good), very little editorial content (not-so good). it's a fair reference guide and not too expensive.

This is Merlin Carothers' story of God's call to increased commitment. It is thought provoking, and reminds me of the benifits of a close walk with God. This book is both convicting and encouraging
