Book Description
In an autumnal love story of erotic obsession, possessiveness, remembrance, oblivion, and time, an elderly woman dwells upon a failed love affair of some time past, when she was no longer young but not yet old. The narrator relives meeting her lover, Franz, at the natural history museum, when, for the first time in her life, she experiences all-consuming love and absolute happiness. Ultimately the affair founders because of her inability to believe that Franz will actually leave his wife. After he disappears from her life, she withdraws from the world, waiting for his return and revisiting their time together over and over in a never-ending cycle of obsession. Her love for Franz becomes a compulsive suffering from which she can neither free herself nor withhold anything.
Customer Reviews:
This Book Changed My Life.......2005-08-28
I cannot praise this novel highly enough. It taught me how to love without regret and savor the moments that make life worth living. Though originally written in German, the translation is flawless. Every single sentence is a well-crafted masterpiece worthy of quotation. Maron is able to do what so few authors can: create a story that is inexplicably human -- one to which almost anybody who has experienced love can relate.
The relationship between significant others and the construction of identity is central to the narrator's characterization. After an enthralling love affair with a married man, the narrator develops a hopeless fixation with him and is incapable of fully living life in his absence. The unreliable first-person narration gives the reader insight into the many layers of this obsession -- from selective rememberance of their time spent together to her need to preserve the most inane remnants of their relationship long after its demise. Through the use of her lover in shaping her existence, the weakness of her personality is revealed piece-by-piece as a jumbled collection of haunting memories.
Conclusion: read this book. I promise you will not regret it. (Und besser auf Deutsch! Ich las und liebte das Buch auf beiden Sprachen.)

What a great sneak!.......2007-09-04
This is a cute story, with a little bit of light BDSM. Not offensive at all.
Jane is a successful business woman, used to being in control, but complains about the men she dates not lighting a fire in the bedroom. She's having this conversation with her best friend at a local watering hole. Her friend suggests that she go our of her way to let the man take control - do the opposite of her normal tendency. Their conversation is overheard by a gentleman who happens to be a sexual dominant, and who happens to find Jane very attractive. So the games begin! Little does Jane know, the next time she's out at the club, that she's a target of this intrigued gentleman.
Things go well, fortunately for Jane, and the guy is to-die-for. He really is a gentleman and their relationship unfolds in a very happy way.
For me, the story should have been either a little shorter - it is a cute idea but probably not for 200 pages. Or there should have been more to the story. I don't mean contrived disagreements to stretch things out, but a little bit more to challenge their blooming relationship - like maybe a rival for Jane's affection. Nevertheless, this goes on my keeper shelf.
Great Contemporary Romance!.......2006-09-01
To start out, things that bothered me in the book, were a few places where the dialogue was a bit overdone (a few too many "man's" and such), and one place where the writer has a politician carping about the horrendous state of popular fiction didn't ring true (t.v., yes, but I've honestly never heard a politician harp on popular lit.--except Huckleberry Finn, maybe *G*).
The editing was pretty good; only one error I noticed. And the story was very well done in all the ways that count with a reader. I'm not a big fan of contemporary romance, but this was really well written, in a Suzanne Brockman kind of style.
So, about the story:
Jane has worked hard to build her successful book-selling business. Along the way, she's managed to date more losers than Dorothy met on the yellow-brick bypath. And according to her best friend Lacey, they all have one thing in common: they're WIMPS! *G*
O.k., Lacey doesn't put it quite like that. *L*
But Lacey speculates that nice guys letting Jane call all the shots just doesn't ring her bell. Jane is a bit skeptical, but agrees to an outing to look for a gen-u-ine alpha male to test Lacey's theory. What neither of them knows is that the real article has overheard their conversation, and decided to make all Jane's fantasies come true.
Ian is retired military, now running his own security business, with all the hunky ex-merc hotness a reader could want. (Yessirreebub! *G*) When Ian shows up at the blues club where Jane and Lacey have gone to test Lacey's theory, all heat breaks loose in a STEAMY dance floor scene.
I had a bit of trouble wondering how this could take place on a dance floor and not get them arrested, but it was so hot, I just shrugged it off. (Yeah, it IS that hot! *G*) Anyway, they end up back at Jane's place, where Ian quickly takes Jane to her outer limits--and then some. *L*
An embarrassing moment with Jane's friend Lacey proves to be the catalyst where Ian knows Jane's a keeper. Then he finds out Jane's a committment phobic who's never allowed herself to get close enough to fall in love. Ian is determined to change that. But he knows he has to be careful or lose Jane for good. . .so he decides to wage war for his love, by all means sneaky and subtle. . .*G*
This well-balanced story caught and held my attention through the whole book. The dominance aspects are tasteful and playful, enjoyable and not overdone.
The story never veers over to the formulaic or boring, even when dealing with things that should be mundane, like trips to the zoo (where Ian takes her to ease her into getting to know him) and a visit Ian makes to Jane's office (hoo boy, don't get me started on that one!*G*).
And an interlude on the way to a party, in, of all places, Ian's garage, will leave you wiping the fog off your glasses (and maybe even heading to the nearest dealership. Kept thinking of that line from the movie True Lies, "The 'Vette gets 'em wet"--and the car's not even a Corvette.*L*).
The ending was good here--even though I didn't want this book to end! Left me wondering when the author's next goodie was due out? Soon I hope!
This book was not only up there on the hottie scale, the characters really cared about each other, and Jane and Lacey's friendship was really fun, with some great smart*ss dialogue. Ian has a tender and playful side that made him SOOO loveable, and he brings out this side of Jane as well, because he really likes her for who she is.
This book was so good, you can only wonder just how much room this author has left herself for improvement over the course of her career (and she'll have one, you betcha!). My answer: not much. She's stunningly good.
Hurry up with that next book, Murray! *G*
The Dom of her dreams!.......2006-01-01
Jane Denning is a successful career woman who has built her own business and is happy with her life. Well, mostly happy. She has enough money, she has good friends ... what she doesn't have is a guy in her life. It's not that she doesn't try. But the guys she's going out with are, in a word, boring! What Jane wants is a guy who will take charge, excite her, interest her, pleasure her. In other words, a guy who knows where all the parts are and how they fit! Jane's friend Lacey suggests that maybe what Jane needs is a change of pace in her dating habits. Maybe she needs to try a different type of man.
As Jane and Lacey are planning their campaign to find this take-charge man, Ian MacInnes, former military man and security consultant, overhears them. When he learns that Jane and Lacey are going to be at the Blue Note blues club that night, he decides that he will be there too. Jane is going to meet the Dom of her dreams if he has anything to say about it!
I really enjoyed this book. The writing is smooth and literate, as well as being very descriptive and funny. I was drawn into the story from the very first paragraph, and couldn't put the book down. The characters of Jane and Ian react as if they were real people, with energy and humor. The emotional appeal of the writing is deeply moving, and makes the reader really feel the attraction growing between them. The secondary characters are just as fun. In fact, I hope that the author decides to write a book for Lacey sometime in the future.
Another wonderful aspect of this book is the erotica - the sex scenes are abundant and very explicit, but the author also understands that sex can be funny if you do it right. The hero and heroine couple with arousing abandon -- they have good time doing it and are not ashamed nor afraid to laugh. The man/woman sex includes light bondage and spanking. I know this book will delight you as it did me, and recommend it highly. -- Jean, Fallen Angel Reviews (courtesy of Fallen Angel Reviews)

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The Dark Beyond the Stars was a book I had a lot of trouble getting into, and it ended up not really interesting me at all. On a starship on a really, really long flight a young occupant keeps getting into accidents, and soon, it appears, that someone is actually trying to kill him and make it look like that is not the case.
4 stars for Astron.......2007-08-04
Science fiction novels written from a first person POV usually tend to be pessimistic and introvert. Take for example Wilson's Spin or even Heinlein's Starship Troopers to an extend. This happens to be an excellent tool for claustrophobic space stories and is the best asset of the Dark Beyond the Stars. The hero is confused enough, sensitive enough, ignorant enough and actually grows up as the story unfolds. Sparrow page 1 is a completely different person from Sparrow page 400 and this transformation makes him believable and makes the reader care. Add to this an excellent, suspenseful plot and you have a 4 star novel. A few things to nag about : The science in the book feels a bit like Astron was launched around 2000 AD (compare let's say to Bear's Anvil of Stars for excellent science in interstellar travel) and... smoking in starships?
desperately sad.......2006-04-20
There seem to be two main streams in SF. Action packed or meditative.
This work decidely belongs to the second cathegory and undoubtedly has its merits but after reading a couple of them I really begin to think it is a bad choice: their quality may differ but in the end they always are gloom, bleak, depressing because they tend to dwindle on the natural streaks of evil typical of human society.
I am not saying this novel is ill written, quite the contrary. I have not read enough of the genre to know whether the plot is original, but it is well build for sure. The writing is fine, always to the point; a perfectly believable social structure is peopled by magnificent characters, extremely well rounded.
A collateral but interesting aspect of this novel is the description of sexual habits on spaceship Astron: sex is seen as an ideal way to release the pressure of a monotonous life: every member of the crew feels free to mate with anyone else on bord and the sex of the occasional companion is no issue. More permanent relationships may involve two, three or even small groups of people.
These colourful details aside, after finishing this book I was left with nothing but a deep sense of sadness. If you love hard SF at his best you cannot miss it; if you look for entertainment just skip it.
And the truth shall set you free. . ........2005-04-14
Thank you, Frank, for a great book. Would that our leaders (?) in Washington read this. The Earth is our home, you have kept it alive. The story is straight-forward, the humanity is certainly alive. When did the story start? Who knows, and does it matter. Is the story believable? Why not? The future begins with imagination.
Frank's telling the story in first-person, present tense allows the reader to experience each moment. I'm not too often moved by books, but this book brings humanity back to life.
Great sci-fi even for the casual fan.......2005-01-13
I'm a periodic sci-fi reader and must be interested to finish a book in this genre. This met my needs--a thrilling page-turner that's a fine blend of sci-fi (without too much science) and suspense. I heard about this after finding it was a Lambda award winner in 1991. After reading it, I'm surprised it won a "gay" award--though that occurs in the book, it's in the context of how all of society feels. I wouldn't call it a "gay" novel.
The story is of 17-year-old Sparrow, who, after an accident, has no memories. He's on a ship called the Astron, which has been in space for centuries looking for other life. As others and events begin to seem vaguely familiar, he discovers a secret movement aboard--some want to go back to earth. They've been to hundreds of planets and found nothing and believe earth truly is the only source of life.
Things are at a crisis point now. They must enter the "dark," a part of space where there are no planets to explore. After they will pass through it (which will take a whopping 100 generations), they will enter an area of more planets to explore.
This story kept me gripped, and the main character and other characters were well-drawn. I was surprised at the level of sophistication in the characterization. Fine points usually found only in literary novels make the characters a rich tapestry. The spaceship environment seems likely and real. Apparently Frank M. Robinson has not written a lot of sci-fi, but I am sure to read the rest of his books.

Useful for a narrow audience.......2005-04-16
This is an Episcopal resource. It is written by Episcopaleans for Episcopaleans and with the BCP lectionary in mind. As such, it is of very limited use to anyone who is not planning Episcopal liturgies. Even so, I have found it useful as a United Methodist pastor for some of the information it gives and the ideas it has generated. I find it particularly amusing (and sad) that the Anglican Communion observes a Feast of John and Charles Wesley (March 3rd) but my own denomination has no such observance.
This can be a useful book if you have a particular need, otherwise, save your money.
The days of our lives..........2004-07-03
In the Episcopal pantheon of books, the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer are the top-tier books, the 'without which' that the Anglican world relies upon. Below this level are several second-tier books, those books which are also vital and useful, the books that no church or clergyperson tends to be without, and that most services in the church incorporate on a frequent if not regular basis. In this second-tier of books is the Hymnal, the Book of Occasional Services (those services not regularly scheduled enough to be in the Book of Common Prayer proper), and this text, the book of Lesser Feasts and Fasts.
Usually, this book is updated every three years (at the General Convention of the Episcopal Church); however, for the most part, the text remains essentially the same from edition to edition, with certain additions and corrections, so that any particular edition has an effective useful life of a decade or so. The latest edition comes from the GC 2003 decisions, but pick up any LFF text over the past many versions, and you will find the format and the largest percentage of the contents the same.
The book begins with a layout of the calendar of the church year. The first few pages are text that give the dates of principle feasts (or methods for calculating the movable feasts), holy days and major feasts, the fasts (Ash Wednesday and Good Friday), and days of special devotion and optional observance. There is then a twelve-page calendar, one month per page, of the days of observance for particular persons. The Anglican communion does not have the same method of canonisation of saints as does the Roman church; 'saints' as such are people accepted by communal assent as having led lives worthy of note and model, as appropriate.
The persons here represented include saints common to the undivided church (prior to 1054) like the Disciples (sometimes with shared days), Cappadocian Fathers, early church figures (fathers and mothers, such as Monnica, Augustine's mother); figures of the Western church prior to the Reformation (Aquinas, Hildegard, etc.); figures unique to Anglican history (Lancelot Andrewes, Richard Hooker, etc.); shared figures in the broader Protestant family (Martin Luther, John Wesley, etc.); figures in American Christian experience, Anglican and otherwise (William White, Phillips Brooks, Samuel Seabury, Martin Luther King, Jr., etc.); and other twentieth century figures (Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Florence Nightengale, Evelyn Underhill, etc.). The list is constantly changing and growing, to match the spiritual needs of the community.
All the two-page entries for the people (arranged chronologically through the church year) follow the same format -- there are collects (prayers for the day) for each, presented in 'traditional' language (thee, thou, thy) and modern langauge, reflective of Rite I and Rite II in the Book of Common Prayer. The other page presents a brief biography of the person or people involved, or a little explanation of the day (as in the case of All Saint's Day, or other such events). The listing also includes what propers are due for the day (the Biblical passages appropriate for services). Other sections include the propers and collects for days in Advent and Lent, the commons of saints, lists for eucharistic readings over different periods, and an index of names.
When we did daily services at my old parish, long before I was a priest, we did not have music on those days. We had our 'daily trinity' of books -- the Bible, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Lesser Feasts and Fasts book. We would read the daily commemoration for the person involved, and then do an abbreviated eucharistic service, using the collect for the day prescribed in the LFF. I became very familiar with this text, and recommend it not only to Episcopalians, but also people who would like to add a cyclical and historical sense of time to their Christian practices.

Great Company Cooking.......1999-03-05
Once again, Anne Willan brings us a cookbook that is clear, easy to use, and great for impressing others. I would put this book on my list of "company cookbooks" - for when I want to entertain and revel in the compliments of what a great cook I am. Anne's cookbooks are well known for being easy to follow and full of beautiful photos that make the directions clear. It is not impossible to get results very close to the photos. Some recipies are packed with red meat or heavy cream, so if you are watching what you eat, pick your recipies carfully. Some recipies are a little more adverturious than others, but there are some good basics.

100 Ways to Be Pasta: Perfect Past Recipes from Gangivecchio.......2006-03-20
This book is not only hugely informative, but fun to read. The recipes are easy to follow, and the tips are things that would never have occurred to me. I always thought pasta was so uncomplicated that my childhood "Mac'n'Cheese" pretty much summed it up. WRONG! These two passionate Italian cooks are the real thing, and my family is really, really glad I ordered this book! We should all be grateful that Wanda and Giovanna Tornabene consented to share their love of pasta with the rest of the world.
Il Preferito di Peter flop.......2006-02-20
Bought the book and the first recipe I tried somewhat flopped! In Peter's Timballo pg. 158, the recipe calls to start with one cup of olive oil/8 tbl of butter and then saute the onion, etc. In hindsight it seems I'd been better off with one or two tablespoons oil and 2 of butter as the recipe went awry from that point on. All in all the dish was saved at the end, albeit a bit soggy and just somewhat like the photo on pg. 159. The great frustration is trying to find an email address of the author, publisher or agent to get this corrected or to verify the ingredient's measurements were correct. Having spent the better part of 1/2 a day putting this dish together I'm reluctant to try another with this author.
Very interesting regional pasta dishes from Sicily.......2005-11-16
I think I am going to be trying a lot of the recipes in 100 Ways to Be Pasta - these are recipes from the village of Gangivecchio, in Sicily. The book is divided into 5 chapters:
Quick and Easy Pastas
Rich Pastas
One-Dish Pastas
Soup with Pasta
Baked Pastas and Timballos
The latter is the most interesting to me - I have been very curious about Timballos since I first heard about them in the movie "Big Night" as a rare and kind of mystical dish that you will not find in many Italian cookbooks.
A timballo is a served during special occasions and Holidays. It is a kind of savory "cake" made with short or long pasta and layers of either meats, vegetables, cheese and a red or white sauce. The recipes in this book all sound delicious:
Baked Timballo of Anelleti, Veal and Vegetables
Veal Timballo with an Eggplant Shell
Eggplant and Ziti Timballo
Timballo of Winter Squash and Sausages (good idea for a new Holiday dish like Thanksgiving or Christmas)
The other chapters have recipes I have not seen in other books, mostly using the local ingredients of Sicily.
The authors give a lot of advice and the book has some beautiful photographs of the village of Gianvecchio as well as some dishes and techniques on pasta making.
Italian food is my favorite and I am very very happy with this book.
New Ideas for Pasta.......2005-10-31
I bought this book sight unseen based solely on the quality of the author's previous books. And I bought it because I had been searching for pasta recipes that did not go heavy on the standard red or white versions. This book really delivered. A few examples:
Fusilli with Porcini Mushrooms, Aromatic Vegetables & Grappa
Ziti with Lamb, Lemon & Rosemary
Lumache Rigate with Broccoli Flowers & Turmeric Cream
September Soup with Green Beans & Caciocavallo
Capellini Timballo with Peas, Edam & Ham
Recipes are largely complete on one page and there are some photographs sprinkled throughout. Each recipe is preceded with a short paragraph by the authors giving a short personal backround on the recipe or serving ideas. Oh, and there is even a sidebar for a pasta meal for your cat or dog!
Overall I was delighted with this purchase.

Ten years ago author Lisa McAllister teamed up with John Michel to bring collectors the definitive guide to collecting American yellow ware, then produced a second book in 1997. Now she presents an all-new volume in her series, Collector's Guide to Yellow Ware, Book 3, which contains over 300 photographs with no repeats, and new information vital to collectors in this field. Filled with fresh facts on yellow ware, the book contains marks never before seen, many figural pieces, flower pots, urns, pitchers, and storage pieces of all sizes and shapes. In addition, there is an entire section devoted to bowls, one of the greatest categories of interest for yellow ware collectors, which includes photo, origin, sizes in which the piece was made, and value for each bowl. As in McAllister's two previous books, potters and their marks are included, as well as a glossary and bibliography. Anyone who takes a look at this book will be amazed at the variety of forms of yellow ware, an early nineteenth century whimsey that grew into a twentieth century utilitarian object. AUTHORBIO: In 1992 Lisa McAllister co-authored her first volume of the Collector's Guide to Yellow Ware with John Michel. That book has been brought back into print with updated information and current market values. She has also produced two more volumes on her own in that series, as well as the Collector's Guide to Feather Edge Ware. REVIEW: This book is invaluable for yellow ware collectors. Hundreds of color photographs and a useful marks section are included. The colorful pages add to the beauty of this book.

Customer Reviews:
Misinformation in both of her books.......2002-09-23
Although there are nice pictures and NICE overinflated prices,
there is much information and labeling of yellow ware that is incorrect. It is obvious that this author doesn't know enough about pottery to be considered an authority on yellow ware. the only book that I know of that has the correct information for the begginer and the scholar is Gallo's book, a great reference. When is he going to do another one?
If you have the first Yellow Ware book you must have this........1997-12-29
This book has even more information than the first! The color photography is wonderful. The entire book is filled with photos of many rare and unusual pieces. She has also added a section on Potters and their marks to aide in identification.A well researched and enjoyable guide for the Yellow Ware Collector. I hear number three's in the works.
A wonderful and informative reference guide.......1997-12-29
Collecting Yellow Ware is a must have for the Yellow Ware collector.Lisa and Michael have created an in-depth guide of the history of this wonderful pottery. There are tips for collecting, and numerous color photographs. All arranged in and easy to follow format.I refer to it daily.

Intemediate bowl turning, from log to finished bowl.......1998-12-30
64 full color pages, 5 page gallery. Color step-by-step directions for making 1 big bowl. I don't think this is for the beginner, it still scares me (even without the bleeding finger safety tips). Good techniques and I learned a lot, but it was too involved for my first bowl. I'll keep it in my library for later. Contents: Sharpening, Starting from a log (chain saw required), roughing out green wood, [wait while wood drys], turning the bowl, sanding with discs using a drill, building a jig for turning the foot, finishing (includes Judy's Low-tech, fun-n-easy-to-make, so-nontoxic-you-could-eat... finish recipe).

John Irving's novels pose tantalizing challenges to filmmakers: at his best, Irving has proven both popular and ambitious, crafting rich, picaresque fiction that juggles Big Themes and antic comedy, braiding his central narratives with intriguing subplots and discursive back stories driven by vivid characters. Irving's accessibility teases the would-be director or producer with the prospect of commercial acceptance even as the scope and intricacy of his work raises crucial risks for the scriptwriter. With two early novels that made it to the screen, The World According to Garp and The Hotel New Hampshire, Irving's box office impact thus far evenly translates to hit and miss.
This slender memoir offers a perceptive, if hardly objective, critique of the inherent differences between novels and screenplays, with the writer sharing his own experiences creating both. Irving focuses principally on his crusade to bring The Cider House Rules to the screen, tracing its gestation through four successive directors; with Irving himself attached as scriptwriter, we see the novelist struggling to reconcile the demands of concision against his paternal instincts toward the original book. Written before the final cut of The Cider House Rules, My Movie Business often verges on self-justification. Irving's respect for the movie's ultimate caretaker, Swedish director Lasse Hallstrom, is evident, as is his hopeful enthusiasm for the project's casting (which includes Michael Caine, Tobey McGuire, Jane Alexander, and Charlize Theron). Yet Irving can't repress the wariness prompted by his earlier disappointments with both this and other novels.
Ultimately, such candor doesn't diminish the account's value as a post mortem of the creative process behind serious filmmaking, nor does it overpower the reliable grace of Irving's prose. Fans will also find My Movie Business revealing in its exploration of the inspiration behind The Cider House Rules and its eloquent stance against the antiabortion movement--Irving's own grandfather, a leading doctor, administrator, and Harvard professor of obstetrics and gynecology. But moviegoers, as well as those who haven't read Irving's original novel, should be forewarned that this memoir does reveal key plot elements of both. --Sam Sutherland
Book Description
After two producers, four directors, thirteen years, and uncounted rewrites, the movie version of John Irving's acclaimed novel, The Cider House Rules, at last made it to the big screen. Here is the author's account of the novel-to-film process. Anecdotal, affectionate, and delightfully candid, My Movie Business dazzles with Irving's incomparable wit and style.
Download Description
John Irving's memoir describes his involvement (and lack thereof) in five of the films that have (and have not) been made from his nine novels. The primary focus of "My Movie Business" is on the 13 years Irving spent writing and rewriting his screenplay of The Cider House Rules, for four different directors. A Miramax production, the film was finally shot in the fall of 1998; directed by the Swedish director Lasse Hallstroem (My Life as a Dog), with Michael Caine in the role of Dr. Larch. The Cider House Rules movie is a November 1999 release.
Irving also writes about the failed effort, with the director Irvin Kershner (The Empire Strikes Back) to make Irving's first novel, Setting Free the Bears, into a movie; about two of the films that were made from Irving's novels but not from his screenplays, George Roy Hill's The World According to Garp and Tony Richardson's The Hotel New Hampshire; about Irving's ongoing struggle, with the director Martin Bell (American Heart), to make the author's screenplay of his novel, A Son of the Circus, a film.
In addition to its qualities as a memoir -- anecdotal, comic, and candid -- "My Movie Business" is an insightful essay on the essential differences between writing a novel and writing a screenplay. Never have the two forms of storytelling been so lucidly compared and contrasted, and with such generous detail, and with so many memorable and clarifying examples.
Customer Reviews:
The pictures were nice........2004-09-29
This recollection of his writing (books and screenplays) varies from the personal to his gripes about the movie business. He admits that he is not a moviegoer, mainly because he is not comfortable sitting in dark rooms with a lot of strangers! And yet he devoted many years and frustrated efforts to get his novels filmed, using his own screenplays.
He speaks of his friendship with Salman Rushdie, author of THE SATANIC VERSES, to whom he dedicated his novel, A SON OF THE CIRCUS. He relates his experiences in India researching children who'd been sold to be performers in the circuses there. He was particularly interested in the dwarf clowns. It took him five and a half years to finish the novel; had no luck with getting the screenplay accepted.
Of his published books, the three most popular made into films were THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP (starring Robin Williams), which I thought was pretty weird, THE HOTEL NEW HAMPSHIRE (Jodie Foster) and THE CIDER HOUSE RULES (Tobey Maguire -- the reason I watched it).
He gives an in-depth account of the making of this movie and his involvement in every aspect except the advertising. He worried over what the poster would show. In the movie, he portrayed a train station master (that is his costumed acting on the front cover of the book), where an old steam engine similar to Knoxville's Rambler was used.
If you saw the movie about an abortion doctor and his protege, looking at the large photo layout in the middle of this book lets you re-live the emotions. It is based on his grandfather's practice in Boston as explained in his biography, SAFE DELIVERANCE, about the nationally Lying-In Hospital. His grandfather wrote nonfiction as opposed to John's novels based on his family background. Guess he used his imagination a bit.
He made demands that they use the reading of Charles Dickens' DAVID COPPERFIELD to the children in the orphanage. I think perhaps he lives in the past too much as he reminisces not about the good things but the negative which happened.
This was not one of my favorite movies (the subject matter is still a controversy which may never be resolved), but I did learn how to find a person's unlisted phone number: 'say you are calling about a death in the family.' It happened to this author when he lived in New York and asked a caller "how did you get my number?" Now, this I found interesting. That's the joy of reading -- you learn something in every book no matter how insubstantial the subject matter.
It's not exactly what I would call a "memoir" as it focuses on this film almost exclusively. The rest is peripheral.
Unprintable - Not worth it !.......2004-04-26
Amazon was in stock then out of stock on paperback edition, after advising book would be shipped and arrive in 2 days.( Then I check and its due to ship in 2 weeks.) I needed it to review for college assignment,so had no choice but to buy download version.I missed the " can't print " notation on description. Would not allow cut and paste for quotes from book and had to type all quotes referred to. Reading a book on a monitor was also annoying. Never again will I download a book.
First time ever screwed by Amazon, so I will forgive them for now.
A great memoir.......2003-11-19
If at first you don't succeed...
It took Irving a great amount of time and work to have one of his greatest novels turned into one of the most critically-acclaimed movies of the year. THE CIDER HOUSE RULES, perhaps the best known of Irving's novels, was finally made into a movie starring Michael Caine. MY MOVIE BUSINESS follows the variious difficulties he encounters, while also letting the reader in on his personal history with and opinions on the touchy subject of abortion. In true Irving style, he speaks seriously of the subject but relieves the viewer of its politics by telling some very funny anecdotes.
I highly suggest this book for any Irving fan. If you haven't really read anything of his before, I don't suggest this as a first book--read THE CIDER HOUSE RULES first.
Notes from The Disapproving Stationmaster..........2002-12-29
...I find John Irving highly entertaining and readable and like I have said in numerous occasions in this Readers' Reviewer Forum, he is one of my favorite writers.
Here is his personal account of what it took to get the great novel "The Cider House Rules" to be made into a movie, and although I feel that the novel is 'way better than the movie, the movie is an adequate presentation of the novel--or in other words, I agree with Irving that there are so many pieces of poignancy in the novel that somehow could not be translated in movie terms.
Irving starts this memoir with personal history of his grandfather, Dr. Fritz Irving, who, in spite of his pioneering advances in obstetrics and teaching at Harvard, all his coworkers and students--present day doctors, retired practioners and such--recalls a ribald poem as his enduring contribution. Go figure. John Irving's father was influential in antisceptic technique. The use of rubbergloves in operations (Hence present day hospital activity) came from Dr. Colin Irving. So the upshot is that a combination of Colin and Fritz was John's inspiration, nay, model for Dr. Larch...but we find that propelling the memoir is John wishing not to disappoint mostly Fritz in this total creative effort to get Cider in novel and movie form.
So the story is told of how first he pared the novel down to screen play. The initial version would have been 9 hours long. And there's quite an entertianing section of how he and his first director/collaborator Phillip Borsos got about the business of trying to get the darker version of the film together, one in which Paul Newman was to play the infamous Dr. Larch.
Then, when Borsos died, and the search for another director was in play, Irving tells of his history of making his novels into films. He goes thru what did and did not work with the adaptations of "Setting Free Of The Bears", "The World According to Garp" and "The Hotel New Hampshire", the various directors and actors involved in each and why his novels overall are difficult to capture in a movie. What I liked about this section is that he gives an insight of how research for his writing works in his decription of his work of "A Son of the Circus"...sometimes, serendipity kicks in.
When finally we are taken to his work with director Lasse Hallestrom, we get many of the ins and outs of why certain scenes worked in the movie the way they did--the section on Fuzzy and the young actor who played him is sriking--we get to hear Irving's take on the Homer/Candy relationship, we get why Dickens passages in certain scenes in the novel were excised, Irving talks about actors Caine, Maguire, Theron, Lindo and Badu, and we see if Irving ever felt as if he was coming to some sort of blessing from Dr. Fritz.
I can't tell you whether he has that blessing or not, but what I can tell you is that for me, Irving's movie memoir is just as enjoyable as his novels....find this, read it and enjoy it.
A wish come true.......2002-10-01
How many times have I wished I could call an author and ask: "Why did you write that?" How many times have i read a book and loved it, only to hate the movie based on it? I lose count.
Well, John Irving answered my prayers, and in one short book replied to all of my questions and to a few more I didn't even know I had.
I am a huge fan of Irving. He writes like nobody can; he also takes himself very unseriously. I have enjoyed all of his books immensely. This one was a joy from beginning to end. For starters, it gives a fascinating insight into The Cider House Rules. He explains his characters, goes through the thought process that made him write the book this or that way.
This memoir explains very well why it is almost always impossible to transform a book into a movie script verbatim. Irving goes through the painful steps that he took to make The Cider House Rules into a successful movie. It was wonderful to read about the back and forth that Irving had with the director of the film, Lasse Hallstrom. It makes me think that making a movie based on a book is more than anything a labor of negotiation. For me, one of the most poignant moments of this memoir is when Irving tells why he chose the role of the stationmaster. "I just wanted to be there, in the stationmaster's wretched persona, to see Homer get off that train." As an author, this was probably a brilliant moment in his life, seeing his characters in the flesh.
Irving not only reminisces about the trials and tribulations he had to endure to see this book into a movie. He also writes about writing some of his other novels, and bringing them to film, and as always, about his sons. He also offers an unusual insider's account of what it is to be immersed in the movie world. So much of what we know is based on glossy magazines and celebrity TV programs, when the reality is far more crude and plain. Well, no one better than this man to do a bit of reporting, straight from the trenches.
This is a book you must read only after reading AND watching The Cider House Rules. Only then could you do it justice.
