Our 4th year level Spanish Course at Georgia State University enjoyed Arrancame la vida. A good story illustrating the all-too-typical political leaders in Mexico for many decades following the Revolution. Catalina, narrator of the story and wife of the political boss, Andres, is a facinating character. She both despises her husband's total lack of values and enjoys the "good life" he offers her.

Very good story, still as valid as then..........2005-02-01

I had never read a book by Mastretta until I picked up a copy of "Arrancame la vida". In this book, the author describes the life of a woman, Catalina, during and after the Mexican Revolution. She marries a strong, power-thirst man who becomes a big politician.

I found this story different because of the sincerity with which the main character expresses herself. However, what made the story interesting, at least for me, was to realise how little things have changed in the power circles. Replace Catalina's name and add a current, prominent last name of a Mexican socialité, and you can probably still validate all the assumptions on which this book is based.

Mastretta has that "spark" that allows you to get a realistic picture of the book's characters. It is also quite witty if you know anything about the Mexican culture! The only drawback I found in the book was her use of the punctuation signs, but you can get over it because the story is gripping.

Highly recommended if you want something lite, relaxing and that makes you laugh and become even more cynical about politicans and society.

La historia desarrollada en el libro hubiera podido ser buena si la autora hubiera creado menos personajes. Recomiendo leer con mucho cuidado ya que es facil perderse con tantos acontecimientos y todo el fervor de haber leido todo el libro para el tan 'simple' final de la novela fue algo decepcionante.

Karina Sutter and Debby Caruso own Sutter Chocolat, known for their repeat business as women believe the products contain an aphrodisiac. Karina is attracted to the new hunk across the street, but he seems oblivious to her. She decides to make a play by giving him a welcome package of aphrodisiac truffles. However, Alex Anderson rejects her informing her he is allergic to chocolate.

Alex admits to himself he wants Karina, but will do nothing about his feelings as he is on the run. Having been placed in Witness Protection when he did his job as Mark Lexmond, defense attorney for a killer who murdered the son of a crime kingpin, Alex is in hiding from the thugs and the cops as he knows someone inside the WPP gave him away in Florida. Still he finds himself struggling not to make love with the delicious looking chocolate maker; only fears for her life keeps him from tasting the sweetness she offers.

This is hot romantic suspense though the intrigue comes late. Much of the story line is the sweet Karina trying to get Alex to devour her senseless; an act he desperately wants to do, but bittersweet tries to avoid. Readers will appreciate this XXX amusing chase in which the heroine dangles her chocolate coated cherry at a hero who salivates for a dip in the honey pot, but tries to avoid his and her desires.

Good Beginning Text for Preaching.......2006-05-10

This book looked really promising when I saw it advertised, but I haven't found it to be quite as helpful as I'd hoped. I thought it would be a resource that would give me some fresh ideas for preaching, but what I've found is a really good introduction to preaching. Some of the standard homiletics texts have not been updated to deal with media and the emerging movement; Nelson does a good job of handling those things and intriducing the basics of putting a message together. While it has not been as helpful to me as I had anticipated, I would highly recommend it to someone beginning a preaching career or to someone who has not really looked into the use of media in preaching.

A must buy!.......2000-03-23

I have been looking for this book for years! I first encountered this book in the public library. Most cookbooks are either too simplistic, or require "pastry chef" level of cooking skills. This book gives you enough information and instruction to make wonderful cakes and pastries. I have tried many of the recipies and have succeeded each time with making something that everyone liked on the first try! Believe me, I am no pastry chef. Finally, I have found this book at Amazon.com!

For the Kewpie lover, not those who are looking to buy and sell.......2005-10-30

Since there aren't many available reference books on the subject of Kewpie dolls, you may want to consider adding this volume to your library despite its limitations. The title led me to expect a reference book that would assist me with evaluating Kewpies for the purpose of resale. Unfortunately, a large portion of the book is devoted to the history of the development of the Kewpie and their creator. The content is also very, very limited. It really just includes dolls with a couple of other pieces such as a cup and saucer and a neck kerchief (without prices); there isn't really any "art" to speak of, either listed or valued. It does have an index, however it's primarily organized by the owner of the pieces, not by the actual pieces. Also, the values are not listed with the illustrations. They are located in a chart at the back of the book, which is organized by the item name, size, material, type, year made, manufacturer and current price. Unfortunately, the names don't really correspond with the actual items and it's difficult to determine which items the chart is actually referencing. Again, there aren't many Kewpie reference books available, so this one isn't completely without value, just don't hope for anything comprehensive or easy to use.

Kewpies are such a fun doll. This is a great book for my library.

Good book for crafts.......2007-08-11

We bought this book so we could make eyelash yarn leis for a trip to Hawaii. We bought some beautiful yarn leis in Kauai and they ended up being stolen. After feeling bad about loosing those, we decided to learn how to make our own.

The book fairly well describes the eyelash yarn process. We needed to learn how to crochet independently, but that was fairly easy using some simple websites. We were able to get the supplies we needed at a Michael's store and Hobby Lobby. So far, we're not skilled enough to make great leis, but on par with some we've seen selling for $40-$50 in Hawaiian tourist stores.

A sumptuous collection from the pages of COLONIAL HOME.......2002-07-26

Poor "Colonial Home" magazine. After decades as the premiere magazine of antique American homes, it changed its name to "Classic American Home" and then was out of business in the ad-pages slump that followed September 11th, 2001. It was a great loss to those who love viewing and learning about historical American homes.

Fortunately, even if you were never a "Colonial Homes" subscriber, you can still indulge your love for classic American style via Rosemary Rennicke's lovely "Classic American Decorating." The homes features herein are all taken from the pages of the magazine, and they amply show the magazine's high quality and standards. There is no country-kitschy stuff here--everything is distilled to its purest essence, whether it is a keeping room in an 18th century Connecticut home or the bedroom in a high-rise Manhattan apartment building.

The book is divided into chapters covering architecture, furniture, accessories, and so on. The photography is handsome, and the book design is pleasing to the eye.
