The second novel from Yamanaka, who is also an award-winning poet, is about three kids trying to hold themselves and their family together after the death of their mother. The story is set in the cultural crossroads of Hawaii, where the Ogata kids--Masie, Ivah, and Blu--are forced to find their way through the poverty, violence, and racism of their harsh environment. Displaying her ear for the poetry of real-life language, Yamanaka writes in the direct voice of the children; their visceral experience of home, school, and the personal mythology in their family come through powerfully.
Book Description
On the Hawaiian island of Molokai, life goes on for the three young Ogata children after the death of their mother and subsequent emotional withdrawal of their grief and guilt-stricken "Poppy." The eldest at 13, Ivah is now responsible for the safety and well-being of tiny Maisie, vulnerable and mute since their mother's passing; and for Blu, her uncontainable brother whose desperate need for love has made him vulnerable to the most insidious of relationships.

Away from Waikiki - the Real Hawaii.......2006-11-04
This book really stayed with me long after reading it (during a trip to Hawaii). It represents the "real" people of Hawaii (in this case, on the island of Molokai) who live on the financial brink but have their own rich resources -- of family, friendship and culture -- to make it through. Although I hated this book at the beginning -- such terrible things happen to these kids -- it's worth sticking with it for the beautiful moments that come later in the story. P.S. I loved the island "pidgin" language the story is told in, and it resonated as we traveled around Hawaii and met people.
Should Have Won Every Prize in the Book.......2004-10-03
I read this book some time ago, then read everything else by the author, then read this again. Both times I was stunned by the power, the honesty, the poetry, the passion, and the raw talent of Ms. Yamanaka's writing. I felt that I was in the presence of a major new literary voice and looked for the recognition I was sure she would receive nationally. Instead I fear that this book and others did not receive enough attention because the author happens to be from Hawaii, rather than, say, New York or L.A. I'm a writer myself and can only wish I had a tenth of the ability of this writer. I think Blu's hanging is a classic.
This Hawaii is not for the faint hearted.......2004-09-26
This book is about a human tragedy in one of the most beatiful settings of the world. The Ogata is a Japanese American family coming to terms with the death of their mother. Ivah, the oldest daughter, takes on the role of mother and caretaker to her younger siblings, Blu, a fat boy who grieves by eating too much, and Maisie,a sweet little girl who stops talking. Their father, Poppy, is too busy grieving the death of his wife to pay attention to the kids. Alone in the world, they must fend for themselves against the harsh realities of life, from sexual molesters to people who have nothing for them but contempt. The use of Pidging English gives authenticity to the main characters, especially Blu, with all his wordly wisdom. I can almost feel he is sitting next to me, and not Maisie, giving his opinion about many things that happen to him and others. With no adult to guide his life, he makes his own conclusions about everything he sees, from sex to religion. The book is full of bad language and very graphic descriptions of, for instance, sex and animal abuse. I had to stop reading many times because it was too painful to go on, and yes, I cried a lot, Sad to say, the author received a lot of criticism after the publication of this book, especially because of the depiction she does of the Filipino American community as sexual deviants. However, the Japanese and Caucasian characters of her book do not fare very well neither, and rather than criticise the author, one should applaud her courage for bringing up topics that are too convinient to ignore, but difficult to hide, such as the poverty many people still live under, not only in America, but basically everywhere else in the world.
I give Blu's Hanging a four out of five, because sometimes the book has a "soap opera" feeling to it, with cheesy bits here and there. Otherwise, kudos to the author, who dares describe the not very nice side of life in Hawaii.
"I know who the dreammaker is....".......2003-09-19
BLU'S HANGING by Lois-Ann Yamanaka
BLU'S HANGING by Lois-Ann Yamanaka is my introduction to the books by this Hawaiian native of Japanese descent. In this novel, Yamanaka takes us into the world of Ivah Ogata, the oldest child of a family that has just lost their mother, and a father who can barely feed and clothe them, let alone give them the love and attention that was given to them by their mother.
Ivah is the narrator of this heartwarming story. She looks after her brother Blu, a lost soul who is at a turning point in his life. He could go down the wrong path, or find the right one, and is getting involved with the wrong crowd. Maisie is the baby and for some reason has lost the ability to speak. Because of this, there are many misunderstandings about her at school, including by teachers that punish her for wetting her pants. She's scared, and trusts only her brother and older sister. On the peripheral of all this is their father, a custodian that lives in a fog since his wife passed away, and as he ages, Ivah worries about him, knowing that Poppy yearns to be with his beloved Eleanor.
The reader is given a glimpse of life on the islands, in particular the working class locals that are barely making ends meet. Life is rough, filled with hunger, pain and violence. A lot of Hawaiian flavor is mixed into the story, as not only are we told the story in the local pidgin, but we can also smell and taste the foods that are part of this unique Hawaiian American society. We also feel the pain that is Ivah, who does not want to be stuck on this island, who wants more to her life than having to raise her brother and sister who need her desperately. It is a sad tale, but told with a voice filled with hope for a promising future. The characters are endearing, and you will want to know more about them and how they fare once you are done with this book. BLU'S HANGING is highly recommended.
A New Voice.......2003-08-15
Yamanaka's character's come from a place of strained authenticity. I recommend this book because it is a new voice--distinct from other works coming out of Hawaii. However, there are moments where the book seems forced, over dramatized, which of course brought me to tears. I feel for these characters, but much like a soap opera I cannot meet them. They are too written--as poetic as Yamanaka is there are times when the language does not ring true--especially for a Japanese-American family. Blu's Hanging is magical for me because I have been raised in Hawaii only to move away and then return; it brings me hope that voices from Hawaii will be heard, noticed. Read this book not because you want to sample a piece of Hawaii, rather the story itself is so impossible to believe, so saddening that you will be haunted by the idea of Blu eating eating eating much like many Americans who are searching for something that is missing and can find no way to fill it...

His wife and child slain, his manor destroyed, Rand now lives for one thing alone: revenge on the man who ordered the attack. Good Read.......2006-02-17
Im so looking forward to the next book, i read this one on one sitting, it was that good!!!
An enchanting love story!.......2006-01-05
It's been a while since I've picked up a book, and been compelled to stay up half the night to finish it. This story drew me in, and didn't let me go until the last page. Randwulf and Serena are two expertly drawn characters, and it was a true delight to watch them fall in love. Especially Randwulf, who is so nearly destroyed by his past tragedies. I loved this book, and can't wait to see what Ms. St. John creates for her readers next.
A Winner for the Finale in a Marvelous Series!! Bravo!.......2005-12-27
St. John's final book in her medieval paranormal series (HEART OF THE HUNTER, HEART OF THE FLAME) is an action packed edge of the seat knock-out winner!
Randwulf `Rand' of Greycliff, has lost everything - his wife, child, demesne - in one bloody terrifying night. The only thing he has left is hatred and avenging the atrocity ordered by the maniacal Silas de Mortaine. Hoping to draw his enemy to him Rand sails off while holding a portion of the treasure that his enemy covets. After a battle on ship with one of de Mortaine's monstrous shape shifters, Rand is washed ashore.
An innocent maid who has been kept hidden in the remote forest by her mother for the entire 19 years of her life finds him. Serena possesses a special gift of `Knowing'. She can `see' into the minds of those she touches and one touch without her gloves showed her the immensity of Rand's all-consuming hatred as well as the fervent grief for those he lost. Against her mother's wishes Serena draws closer to Rand and his heart begins to feel again. In a rousing and terrifying finale Rand would not only fight to assuage his vengeance but to defend the gentle maid who had restored his heart.
In the final chapter of this trilogy St. John brings to a close a totally mesmerizing and fascinating series. She's peopled it with passion, vibrant and unforgettable characters, and a breathtaking ending that is sure to please new and older fans alike. Bravo Ms. St. John - keep them coming!
Book 3.......2005-12-06
Our story begins in June, 1275. Randwulf of Greycliff has part of the legendary Dragon Chalice. Rand plans to use it for revenge against the sorcerer who had his wife and child killed. The sorcerer's name is Silas de Montaine and he has shapeshifters to help aid in his dark cause. During a fight with one of these demons, Rand finds himself tossed off a ship. Rand's only thought at the time is to survive and hold onto the pouch containing the Chalice.
Rand washes ashore on the north English coast. He is found my Serena, a young lady with a magical gift called "the Knowing". With a simple touch, Serena sees directly into a person's heart. Serena and her mother, Calandra, live in isolation, by choice. They take no chances on someone learning of Serena's gift and using it for ill deeds or to have her labeled "witch" and killed. Yet Serena cannot ignore her own heart, which demands she help Rand.
***** Author Tina St. John writes magical dreams for us to enjoy. This one overflows in romance and magic. By the time you finish reading you will find yourself totally believing magic exists, and glad of the fact. I highly recommend this entire trilogy. *****

fine historical romantic fantasy.......2005-11-30
In 1275 Randwulf of Greycliff lives for revenge only. He needs to kill sorcerer Silas de Montaine and send the magician's changeling beasts back to the hell they came from because they killed his wife Elspeth and six year old son Tod. Randwulf possesses part of an ancient artifact that gives him hope of succeeding in his endeavor and currently sails to Scotland to pick up another segment when he is attacked by one of the beasts. He and the beast fall overboard where he kills the evil thing, but he is forced to swim to safety as his ship has kept sailing.
On a deserted beach he meets Serena and her mother Calandra. Serena can see a man's darkest secrets by touching them so she avoids doing such. However, they touch several times and she realizes he is a bitter person seeking to avenge a terrible affront. As they become closer while he heals physically she helps him also mend his torn soul and heart, but Silas remains at lodge with plans to conquer the world.
Though the emphasis is on the historical romantic elements, there is plenty of fantasy segments in this fine thirteenth century tale caused by Serena's touch which can see your deepest feelings (nice barometer on whether someone loves you). The intriguing story line grips the audience as Serena enables Randwulf to regain the soul he lost when the evil Montaine killed his family, but his quest still remains strong.

Customer Reviews:
Made for a Quick Buck, and why it matters to the publishers' and Walter Hooper's bank account........2007-10-06
This is yet another book in a series of publications obviously aimed at making a quick buck for the publishers. Aware that anything bearing his name will generally sell quite well, the publishers and Walter Hooper has for the past forty years being issuing posthumous works, anthologies, and throw-away publications such as this. Walter Hooper is Lewis's literary executor, and there have been some serious accusations regarding his handling of Lewis's work in the past four decades, including passing off forged work as Lewis's original work, and incorporating blatantly bad edits into already published works. MADE FOR HEAVEN is actually one in a series of repackaged books by C. S. Lewis, and are primarily aimed at people buying for college and high school graduations or other type of gifts. Rather pointless to anyone who actually reads C. S. Lewis.
Not that there's a problem with devotionals, etc. But seeing C. S. Lewis endlessly repackaged like this, long after he's dead, is getting pretty disgusting. Those wanting to get into C. S. Lewis should just go buy a box set of his books, not buy these worthless chapbooks and hodge-podge publications. If it reaches people for Christ, that's always a good thing. But as far as their intentions go, books like this feel like Hooper and the publishers are just trying to make a quick buck.
Holy words.......2005-06-01
C.S. Lewis was a rare individual. One of the few non-clerics to be recognised as a theologian by the Anglican church, he put forth the case for Christianity in general in ways that many Christians beyond the Anglican world can accept, and a clear description for non-Christians of what Christian faith and practice should be. Indeed, Lewis says in his introduction that this text (or indeed, hardly any other he produced) will help in deciding between Christian denominations. While he describes himself as a 'very ordinary layman' in the Church of England, he looks to the broader picture of Christianity, particularly for those who have little or no background. The discussion of division points rarely wins a convert, Lewis observed, and so he leaves the issues of ecclesiology and high theology differences to 'experts'. Lewis is of course selling himself short in this regard, but it helps to reinforce his point.
This book derives from several of his works: 'The Great Divorce', 'The Problem of Pain', and 'Weight of Glory'. With regard to the Great Divorce, Lewis here derives the title in antithesis of William Blake, who wrote of the marriage of Heaven and Hell. He also is paying tribute to that kind of literature with a long pedigree (including such luminaries as Dante) who write of a visit to Heaven and Hell. In his narrative, Lewis introduces many characters who, the reader slowly discovers, are not in Heaven because they refuse to let go of something, even something rather miniscule, of the Hell in which they find themselves. 'If we accept Heaven we shall not be able to retain even the smallest and most intimate souvenirs of Hell,' Lewis states. However, upon letting go, one finds that nothing has in fact been lost.
In 'The Problem of Pain', Lewis deals with the subject that confounds ministers, theologians and philosophers throughout the ages - why would a loving God not put an end to agony in the world? Why does an all-powerful God permit suffering? The excerpt here derives from Lewis' exposition beginning with Paul's epistle to the Romans - 'the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us.' Lewis looks generally at the problem as an interplay between self, desire, experience and God. This small excerpt does not answer the question definitively, but hopefully with inspire readers to go to the primary text.
In the 'Weight of Glory', Lewis talks a lot about virtue and the style of living; we are called to live in such a way as to bring heaven as close as possible. 'Weight of Glory' is actually a sermon, which contains memorable passages that hearken back to the gospel message of seeing people as potential heavenly beings - as Jesus likened the visitation and good-deed-doing to 'the least of these' as doing so to him, so too does Lewis state that 'there are no ordinary people'; each person is a neighbour in God, and as such, a possessor of the same holiness as we are called to exhibit and as Christ embodied in the world.
This book is part of a pocket-book series being produced by Harper SanFrancisco, several books that highlight the key points of C.S. Lewis' religious/theological writing. Less than 100 pages, with plenty of white space and good-sized print, these books are easily read, but invite contemplation far beyond the scope of their diminutive size.

Best Crochet Book.......2004-01-21
I have owned this book for years and have to say it is one of the best crochet books I've seen! It not only shows you the basic stitches, but it gives you many different kinds of patterns that you can then use in many different ways. It allows you to be very creative as you can apply the patterns however you wish, blankets, sweaters, window treatments, etc. You decide! I have many beautiful things around my home thanks to this book! I would highly recommend it! I am actually in a panic right now because I can't find my copy....so I am ordering another!
Clear Instructions, Color Photos - A MUST HAVE!.......2000-10-17
I just started to crochet and I could easily follow the instructions. This book has colored photos for each lesson. The authors instuctions are very clear (not confusing). From each crochet design you can make a very large project or a very tiny one, the instructions are not limited to a certain size. You can also use these instructions to make anything you want.
This is a must have for all crocheters........1998-07-27
This is a great reference book that is packed with information from cover to cover. This book is perfect for the beginner to the advanced crocheter. It's the perfect tote bag or travel companion. It's small and has all the information you need to choose yarns, hooks, and stitch patterns. Great definitions for abreviations and symbols and how tos for reading patterns and applying them to your work. This book shows you how to do basic to complicated crochet stitches. I really like the color photos of differet yarns by thickness with suggested hook sizes. Great color photos of each one of the stitch patterns with suggested yarns and uses given on each one. This book also has a terrific index making it easy to locate anything in the book quickly. I was so impressed with this that I bought 2. One for me and one to give as a gift.

Book Description
What defines an Arts & Crafts bungalow? What makes it different from other small, one or one-and-a-half story houses? Many say that it's hard to describe, but you know one when you see it. And knowing one when you see it is all about knowing how to spot the details. With Arts & Crafts homes, it is often the way the details are combined, and the philosophy they represent, that makes a house an authentic Arts and Crafts bungalow. It is not just knee braces in the gable, nor a river rock column, or a three part front window. In their latest book, bungalow experts Jane Powell and Linda Svendsen identify the finer points and visual characteristics that make a bungalow a bungalow, and show how to incorporate these important details into your bungalow. The authors skillfully explain how to identify the details and the ways of blending them, and offer insight into the Arts & Crafts philosophy behind their use. A sleeping porch, a pergola, an exposed rafter tail, an extensive use of wood, stone, and brick: none of these things by themselves characterize a bungalow. With Bungalow Details, however, anyone can become a bungalow expert, and be able to confidently "know a bungalow when they see one." Jane Powell is the proprietor of House Dressing, a business dedicated to renovating and preserving old homes. She is a frequent lecturer and consultant, and is the author of Bungalow Kitchens and Bungalow Bathrooms. Linda Svendsen, a graduate of Music and Art High School and Parsons School of Design in New York, has been a renowned photographer for more than thirty years. Her work is showcased in numerous magazines and books; she is the author of Bicycle: Around the World.

Good book.. a bit too politically correct.......2006-11-05
I enjoy this book and look at pretty regularly. I plan on using some of the details on future construction projects. However, the author is a bit too politically correct for my tastes. She keeps reminding us how "poison" vinyl is. That sort of bothered me. I am sure, given a choice, most people would choose to live a beautiful wooden or stone home rather than a vinyl clad manufactured home or tract home.. however lets be realistic. Those types of home are often what is affordable to the average family. Other than that issue.. I would recommend the book.. it has some great pictures and lots of information about bungalow exterior details.
best of the bunglaow books.......2006-03-24
Together writer Jane Powell and photographer Linda Svendsen create the best bungalow books on the market -- full of information, not just fluff. Whether you are thinking of remodelling your house, changing a few details, or just want to understand the history of your bungalow, this is the book to buy... and really, this book is very cheap compared to the price of a bad remodel.
In my opinion the chapter on avoiding replacement window scams, while energy-retrofitting your house, should be required reading for all homebuyers.
Excellent reference guide to Craftsman bungalows........2005-11-25
I don't live in a Craftsman bungalow, but I'm adding a number of Craftsman details to my existing NW cabin style house. Over the years I have collected numerous books full of photographs of various bungalows but I have sold all of them now that I have this book. This one book contains information on nearly every exterior detail you are likely to need, and is lavishly illustrated with photographs and drawings. It's an excellent reference for buffs and restorers. I have already pre-ordered the next volume which will cover interiors. Shame I have to wait 6 months!
Bungalow exteriors gives great needed detail.......2005-08-14
This book became and instant reference for our home project and I have quite a few in my collection. If you are looking for good examples to put the finishing touches on a bungalow or arts and crafts project, Ilike this one!
Fantasic, complete, not just a pretty facade!.......2005-03-05
Having devoured Powell's book entitled "Bungalow Kitchens", I knew this book would be every bit as detailed and I was not disappointed. In case you doubt that an entire book can be filled with nothing but information on the exteriors of bungalow houses, I can assure you that page after page is replete with excellent color photographs, illustrations (both modern and period), detailed descriptions of various materials and techniques, and information to help you do a bungalow exterior the RIGHT way (don't paint those bricks!!).
My one and only complaint was the extremely short length of the chapter on foundations, but it's more than made up for by the incredibly detailed chapters on sidings, roofing materials, doors, windows, porches, fences, and much more. Each chapter has an exhaustive listing of suppliers for every kind of material.
We don't have a bungalow, but we will be building a reproduction bungalow house in the next few years and will rely heavily on this and all of Powell's other fine books for both information and inspiration.

A conversation with one who understands.......2007-08-16
The reader might well develop a relationship with this book. Jane Powell takes you on an in-depth tour of the American bungalow. As she talks, her writing is conversational, the details are often interrupted with a pun, other humor, or an outburst revealing her biases. Readers who are looking for an academic study should go elsewhere. This is an enjoyable light-hearted "Open House" without a salesperson but rather a builder-decorator-owner. Powell knows this subject from being there and having done that. Behind her puns you find a seriousness based on an emotional bonding with bungalows. If the reader is thinking about rehabbing a bungalow this book is a necessity. If the reader has rehabbed a house meet a friend.
Bungalow Details:Interior.......2007-04-03
If you are interested in restoration this is a WONDERFUL book! Both of my daughters have purchased homes built around 1920-1927. They are using this book as their bible!
A New Genre?.......2006-06-22
In her Bungalow books Jane Powell has come close to inventing a new genre: the architectural book that is actually fun to read. The latest (Bungalow Details:Interior)is no exception. The illustrations by Linda Svendsen are stellar, as always, but sometimes I think they distract from the best part: Ms. Powell's writing. Jane Powell manages to combine extraordinary erudition with a real sense of fun, two things that virtually never go together. Her knowledge is encyclopedic, her humor unending, her love of puns totally scandalous. She is also wise, with a real sense of what should and should not be done with old houses and the resources they represent. The writings in her Bungalow (and Linoleum) books deserve to be excerpted and presented in a smaller, less expensive edition: the Sayings of Chairman Jane, if you will, devoid of distracting pictures. I highly recommend this and all of her books.

Book Description
A second tail! Everybody back in the water! Those amorous amphibians have returned to shake their shapely tails in our adoring faces. It's time for another look at those sirens of the deep, as seen by such aquatic creators as Arantza, Pelaez, Boada, Cano, Cuevas, Javier, and LeBlanc. Cover painting by Pelaez.

SECOND VOLUME OF SEA BEAUTIES.......2005-09-27
The Gallery Girls Mermaids collection continues with this second volume of outstanding, sea-frolicking art from SQP. As with the other volumes in the Gallery Girls series, Sal Quartuccio has assembled another extraordinary group of talented artists to give their renditions of the most mythical and beautiful creatures of the sea.
The great Pelaez starts things out with a fantastic cover painting and follows this up with a number of terrific interior drawings, one featuring a gorgeous topless mermaid who looks like she's just been taken by surprise, and another showing a stern mermaid giving a spanking to a younger, naughtier one.
Arantza is one of my favorite artists in the world and she also has several great pieces in this volume. One depicts a hot, blonde bombshell, lying on a beach as a hermit crab idles by; another shows a mermaid cheerfully swimming amidst several nearby stingrays.
Colucci, another favorite, delivers a dark, evil, vampiric Mermaid, surrounded by a school of razor-fanged piranha. A terrifying and sad piece by Colucci shows a mermaid embracing the skeletal remains of another...perhaps a lover?
The honor for the most erotic piece in the collection goes to Brian LeBlanc with an undersea orgy involving for mermaids and a captive woman. A piece by Pedro Cuevas shows two spear gun-totting divers hunting a mermaid, or perhaps she is actually leading them to their doom. Emiliano Urdinola has perhaps the most horrific illustration in the book as a mermaid is attacked by a bestial half-woman and half-Octopus like creature.
Among the other artists featured in the book are Mitch Byrd, Tomas Giorello, Maraschi, Meriggi, Gracia, J.L. Roger, and Enric. The book ends on a high note with a great back cover painting as three mermaids hide in a cave from a giant sea monster. Thanks to the great pieces by Pelaez and Arantza, I enjoyed the second volume even more than the first. I'd also like to point out that many of the original pieces in this collection can be purchased from the SQP website. It's definitely worth checking out.
