As in This House of Sky and Ride With Me, Mariah Montana, Doig returns to Big Sky country to tell a complex murder mystery peppered with the free-spirit history of the west and the intrigue of Doig's Scottish ancestry. Through Franklin Roosevelt's W.P.A. and P.W.A., the Duff family becomes involved in the construction of the Fort Peck Dam, the largest earth-fill dam in the world. While most are happy for the work, there are others in the Duff clan that hope for the dam's failure. Mixing fact and fiction, Doig explores the hardships of labor, of Fort Peck's shantytown housing, and the Duffs' resilience to everything from Montana blizzards to rattlesnakes. When two in the clan are murdered, Scottish family loyalty is questioned and the remaining family members face their toughest challenge.

Book Description

Bucking the Sun is the story of the Duff family, homesteaders driven from the Montana bottomland to work on one of the New Deal's most audacious projects -- the damming of the Missouri River. Through the story of each family member -- a wrathful father, a mettlesome mother, and three very different sons and the memorable women they marry, Doig conveys a sense of time and place that is at once epic in scope and rich in detail.

The characters in this novel are well described and true to the character of Montanans. Doig makes my heart ache for the people of a state I learned to love.

4 out of 5 stars Bucking The Sun, A GoodRead.......2004-03-02

I read this because my parents were at Ft Peck in 1933 where my dad worked as an engineer. My parents were "very proper" city people. My mother talked about living in a 24' X 24' construction shack, bathing in a wash tub in water heated from the stove, and hanging clothes to dry where they froze and the ice evaporated in the dry Montana air.

This story brought their experiences to light in a unique way. The Ft Peck area in 1933 Montana was Wild West beyond my imagination. The author brings it to life, weaving a family life, the dynamics of the area, the happenings of the 1930 and a mystery into a wonderful vivid novel.

I highly recommend Bucking the Sun to anyone interested in spending a few hours in such a story.

3 out of 5 stars Will It Ever End ?.......2002-12-31

Ivan Doig, as usual, writes great sentences and very good paragraphs. However, once he gets beyond 200 pages, the whole story drags. I liked his shorter books very much, and waited until I had several weeks of free time to tackle this longer work, knowing it would be slow going. It turned out to be even slower reading than I expected. Doig obviously learned a lot from Stegner about constructing long, complex sentences out of unfamiliar words ( or non-words on all too many occasions ) that have to be parsed carefully to suck out all the nuances of meaning, which works well for a short book of poetry but fails in a work of this length. After a while, the reader just wants the torture to end, but there is no way to hurry through Doig's convoluted poetry/prose. Doig's characters are at once totally unbelievable and exactly like my Scotch-Irish relatives, who are also unbelievable, or at least highly improbable in their actions and reasoning processes. In short, a book half as long would have been better.

4 out of 5 stars Sum of its Parts.......2000-12-21

A fine novel worth your time, but definitely not a mystery book. Sure the first 10 pages describe a murder scene, but there's nothing to solve. Actually, it doesn't get solved, it's lived with, and really that can be said for much of what the Duff family experiences.

All members of the family Duff are unique, as are their relationships. All are enjoyable with only the Scottish Uncle seeming a little too polished; his dialogue a little too precise. But that's a quibble because overall, Doig does very well with his characters. Throw in the dam as another major character and Montana itself, and you have a book worth your time; a great tableau of the 1930s Depression in America.

And if you know what the cover of the first Life Magazine looks like, you know Fort Peck. Doig weaves many real events into his fiction including a visit by FDR, a major dam mishap, and a visit from a Life photographer.

4 out of 5 stars Epic Tale- Not A Mystery.......2000-10-28

Despite the claims of some of the misleading reviews (including the Editorial review at the top of this page) this is not a murder mystery in any way. Yes, two of the characters do perish, as is revealed in the first chapter of the novel (which is not in chronological order with the rest), but this plays an absolutely minimal role in the story. While the question of who ultimately perishes does linger in the back of your mind while Doig relates the multi-faceted story of the Duff family, this is not a tale of a family coping with death. This is truly an epic story which combines interesting, developed, and, most of all, distinct characters with an extraodinarily well described setting- an enormous New Deal project and accompanying lively shantytown set amidst grand natural scenery. The result is a novel which anyone (though especially someone with an interest in or affinity for the American West) should thoroughly enjoy.

          Book Description

Are you waiting for your glass slipper? How often have you told yourself that you could be truly satisfied if only you had the "right" man, the "perfect" job, or "enough" money? Do you find yourself passively waiting for this special someone or something to change your life and give it meaning? If so, you may be a victim of what Lee Ezell calls the "Cinderella Syndrome". Combining personal anecdotes and vivid case histories with sound advice from the Bible, "The Cinderella Syndrome" will lead you to burst the bubble of "fairy tale thinking", on your way to a creative, happy and truly fulfilling life - even in the middle of a less-than-perfect world.

          1 out of 5 stars Quick fixes don't work.......2001-10-30

Although I was excited about this book, I was not very pleased with the style with which it was written or the content. Ms. Ezell seems to have some very quick solutions to very difficult life problems. The book itself proports to address the very real problem of women who are discontented with their life, who have wishful thinking about what the want and who they are with, but proposes to address those concerns in a little over one hundred pages. In the chapter on forgiveness, Ms. Ezell counsels you to look in the mirror and say I forgive. Although she warns us against "magical" thinking, she seems to be using it herself. She contradicts herself. Her bible quotes seem self-serving and her reference to "humanists" seems to infer an intolerance to different faiths and opinions. She tells us that we should trust God to give us what we need, but then says that everything in life is not planned, some circumstances just happen! I was pretty dissappointed, to say the least and I have a magical feeling that I was not the only one!

5 out of 5 stars Find out what it means to be truly happy........1999-09-18

Is there someone from your past you can't seem to forgive, no matter how hard you try? If you're honest with yourself, you have to answer, "yes." This book will show you how to forgive others and in turn, how you can acheive ultimate happiness. The Cinderella Syndrome also shows you neat ways to remind yourself you hold the key to your own happiness. I encourage everyone to read this book: You'll want to keep it for future reference as it will enhance your daily devotional.

Enough of these childish space operas! Finally, I can enjoy my science-fiction, as an adult, coupled with normal sexual action. For years, sci-fi writers have treated their readers as if they were grade school librarians. Hey, guys! We are beyond Buck Rodgers and Flash Gordon. Poor Dale, she never got Flash in bed! That's a crime against both Dale and adult readers. Now, a lot of modern science fiction books have joined "Sex Rites." If you run out of Fox, and want more, look at Ray Emerson's "The Riddle of Cthulhu" for more erotic science+sex-fiction. If you like more classical old time science+sex-fiction, enjoy Haggard's "She." Let's have more writers like Brandon Fox, Ray Emerson, and yes, even Haggard!

                5 out of 5 stars Heroic adventure + eroticism.......2002-09-30

This book includes passionate erotic encounters, like the other novels in the series, but really it's an adventure focusing on the travails and growth of the characters. Some people might not like the sexual content of these books, but it's in keeping with the "sex magic" premise and occurs between characters with deep emotional bonds - the erotic scenes show lovemaking rather than just getting off. The characters make this series, more than the sex. The story is satisfying because the characters show heroism and growth.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful tale of sexual intrigue and exploration.......2001-06-12

"Sex Rites" explores beyond the traditional science fiction genre with a genuine saga of gay sexual adventure, very much in the style of Philip Jose Farmer. This is such an arousing story that a brief review can hardly do justice to the well crafted new character. Dannel is an incredible sensual stud who was sold by his greedy parents at a very young age to a cult to become one of their enslaved guardians of ancients secrets.

Thane is on the run from the Zamindar's relentless pursuers, after thwarting the tyrannical ruler's chance for immortality. Having narrowly prevented destruction of the Lyceum, a community of mages that use sex magic, Sorrel and Nicolai have sent the ever playful Skorri and his skilled companion Erik to assist in Thane and Ander's escape. As a result, we are treated to a sexually filled adventure into new lands of ancient secrets. The reader is given the opportunity to more fully understand why Skorri and Erik are so highly regarded at the Lyceum for their particular skills and legendary horny nature.

This was a fine tale to conclude the series and especially fun to see some new ideas of sexual intrigue and exploration. On my first reading, I didn't fully appreciate the attention to the sexual and cultural details that Brandon Fox manages to weave into the story. This is not a novel to race through just to get from one sex scene to the next. "Sex Rites" is well thought out gay science fiction that will leave you feeling good and pondering things beyond the scope of simple pleasures. A fine novel to read more than once.

5 out of 5 stars Sex, romance and a real plot!.......2001-01-06

This novel is very erotic like the first two in the series, and the emotional bonds between the characters are just as strong. Several characters from the first two books continue a colorful story of adventure and sex magic, plus there is a new character named Dannel. Dannel is a great character, full of problems and frustrations as well as hope and nobility. I really liked a surprise plot twist that puts the whole trilogy in a new light. This installment takes place in a different setting than the first two books, which made for good variety. As for drawbacks, I wish the book was longer! It's a full-length story, but I wanted to spend more time with the characters. The ending is very dramatic and powerful and leaves you wanting more. I cared about the characters, which for me is the mark of a good book.

3 out of 5 stars Give us more, Please!!.......2000-12-31

I loved the first two books in this series. They were very detailed about the personalities and motives of the characters. The sex was great! The endings left me breathless, wanting more. Then, what happened? If I was Brandon Fox's editor, I would have sent him back to the word processor to work on this story to flesh (sorry about that) it out more. It just seems like half a story to me. The new character is fine, but could have been developed more. Erik and Skorri don't hold a candle to Nicolai and Sorren. And where is the zaimandar.... Brandon Fox is a very good writer, but this is not his best work. Come on, Brandon, give us more!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Work -- Essential to any collection on the subject.......2007-02-12

The terms "apocrypha" and "pseudepigrapha" refer to two somewhat vaguely-defined groups of ancient writings. Ordinarily the "Apocrypha" are fourteen books or parts of books found in a section by themselves in Protestant Bibles. The Pseudepigrapha are other ancient books related to the Bible but not included in it. This division breaks down readily; most of the Apocrypha are included in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Bibles, and some of the Pseudepigrapha appear in the Ethiopic Bible. This volume mainly contains the Pseudepigrapha--although it omits III Maccabees and includes IV Ezra, the latter being part of the Apocrypha.

As this collection was originally published in 1913, it does not take account of later scholarship and discoveries. Other than that minor limitation, the work has proved its worth and continues to be useful to this day. Charlesworth's Old Testament Pseudepigrapha is a larger and more current collection, but it by no means entirely supplants Charles.

This volume contains translations and commentaries on **Jubilees, **the Letter of Aristeas, **the Books of Adam and Eve, **the Martyrdom of Isaiah, *I Enoch, *Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, (selected) *Sibylline Oracles, *The Assumption of Moses, *II Enoch, *II Baruch, *III Baruch, *IV Ezra, the **Psalms of Solomon, **IV Maccabees, Pirke Aboth, **Ahiqar, and Fragments of a Zadokite Work. (Titles with a single star appear in the first volume of Charlesworth; those with two stars appear in the second.)

Certain works--most notably II Enoch, the Assumption of Moses, and the Sibylline Oracles--appear here in an abbreviated form. The most significant omission, perhaps, is the Odes of Solomon.

This is a well known standard reference work and is frequently cited for discussions of noncanonical Old Testament biblical literature. It is a useful compilation of many works.

Because it was compiled before many important twentieth century discoveries of sources and versions (these are easily found and discussed in more recent sources) it is somewhat dated.

The volume is repesented as containing pseudepigraphical Old Testament works. However, this is inaccueate in classification. Some books are pseudepigraphical, but others are actually apocryphocal, and some are regarded as Patristic.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have...FANTASTIC.......2004-02-28

I have had the wonderful opportunity to review the book, 'Food FAQs: Substitutions, Yields and Equivalents' by Linda Resnik and Dee Brock, published by FAQs Press. One of the authors approached me in November 2002 and noticed how I had not reviewed their book yet at Amazon.com. Through my information, they found the articles I have written at Suite 101, and there, also, I had not indicated once about their book "Food FAQs". Confidently, Linda Resnik offered me a copy of their book in exchange for a review. I accepted.

When the book first arrived, I noticed that it was small, and organized into 3 sections: Substitutions, Yields and Equivalents, and an Index, which fully cross-references. At a first glance of the book, I saw how functional this book was. Everything was alphabetized, with hard-to-find ingredients also included.

After 25 years of cooking experience (16 of those on a regular basis), I was very curious if this book would really work. Of course, I had to put it to the test. My first test, conveniently showed up the day the book arrived. I was planning on making a yogurt pumpkin pie and had just discovered that I forgot to buy the yogurt. I used their easy-to-use reference guide, and found that the substitution for yogurt was buttermilk. This was great, but I was leery, as one of the major ingredients in the recipe for this pumpkin pie was the yogurt. Well, I continued on my way, and prepared the pie as the recipe recommended. Later, my husband and I taste tested the results. My husband said, "This is delicious!" Being a man with challenging palate, I found this very rewarding, and I agreed to make this pie again for Thanksgiving! My next mission was that of "lotus root". One of my friends has only been in the USA for barely a year. She is from Japan and made me this rice salad. Being pregnant, I was craving this wonderful concoction! But I could not find the lotus root in the grocery store. I looked up the ingredient in this handy reference book to discover that the authors feel like water chestnuts would be an adequate solution. I was also very pleased with the results here.

When I ventured to the Equivalents and Yields section. I, again, was impressed at my first glance. Not only does it explain how much one onion makes when chopped, but also once it has been cooked. This makes shopping easier for the less experienced cook who has no idea what that might require!

5 out of 5 stars A particularly helpful little resource.......2003-07-27

Although I have access to this type of information already in my home from places like cookbooks and internet sites, it is soooooooooo handy to have all these lists of substitutions and equivalents in one spot. The authors have done a tremendous service for home cooks everywhere, especially people new to the kitchen. This book would make a great gift idea for newlyweds, college students, and anyone else just starting out on their own.

                    2 out of 5 stars Very basic.......2001-12-10

This is a handy book for things such as how many egg yolks there are in a cup. I was not so happy with the substitutions sections, however, most of which was so obvious as to make the book somewhat redundant. Though for someone new to the kitchen it would be a handy tool.

They suggest lemon zest as a substitute for lemongrass: the herb lemon balm (in equal weight) is actually much much closer in every way.

5 out of 5 stars INVALUABLE resource! Thorough & meticulous..........2000-12-18

What a life saver in providing food substitutions when cooking a dish and realizing...forgot to buy this! This book tells me exactly what other ingredients can be used and exactly how much while preserving the integrity of the recipe. I have used this book since day one and have found it very concise and precise in its contents. Praises to the authors for its excellent research and kitchen-tested information.

5 out of 5 stars A "must" for any kitchen cookbook reference collection........2000-06-05

From how much to buy to what to use when a cook runs low on an ingredient, this provides a key to substitutions, yields and equivalents which is a 'must' for any kitchen reference collection. Other cookbooks have covered substitutions, but Food FAQS includes yields and equivalents before and after preparation and makes for an excellent reference.

                      Book Description

In his intriguing examination of Civil War remembrance as a public art, Thomas Brown uses civic monuments, ceremonial oratory, historical reenactment, and other forms of commemoration to explore how Americans have addressed issues of nationhood, race relations, gender, and cultural continuity in periods of social and economic upheaval. Drawing on the latest scholarship, Brown provides an informative narrative frame for 24 rich primary texts that range chronologically from the Gettysburg Address to recent debates over display of the Confederate flag. The volume includes more than 30 illustrations of public monuments and mass-circulated prints to help students learn to interpret visual evidence. A chronology of Civil War commemoration, questions for consideration, and a bibliography provide strong pedagogical support.

                            Book Description

In Chicago and New York, in sleazy speakeasies and on Easy Street, to the strains of jazz and the beat of the Charleston, the twenties roared. The horrors of the Great War behind it, the decade went mad with abandon—and mad over the movies, radio, telephones, and the motorcar. But beneath the froth and the folly, the razzle and dazzle, lay a darker world, a hard and often violent world, for the twenties belonged as much to the gangster as they did to the flapper. The stories in this vastly entertaining collection of whodunnits crafted by talents like Amy Myers, Robert Randisi, Jon L. Breen, Edward D. Hoch, Marilyn Todd, and Mike Stotter reflect the allures—and the deadly dangers—of both those worlds.

Who set's today's new trends? At the beginning of a new millennium, who is it that defines what is fashionable, who has the true will to create, who knows how to make glamour a lifestyle? Bright Young Things introduces us to some of the most prominent members of America's younger generation, the high-flyers who set the style, pace and attitudes of their time such as Alexandra and Alexandre von Furstenberg, Aerin Lauder and Eric Zinterhofer, Damian Loeb, Moby, Marina Rust, Andrew Lauren, Serena Altschul, to name a few. And what makes this young, dynamic, styleish group quite interesting, visible and somewhat powerful, is that they are all extremely accomplished individuals in their personal lives, as well as being very accomplished leaders in their relative fields - business, arts, literature, music, movie production, fashion designing, etc. We discover their house, interior and the lives they lead. With contributions by Bill Blass, Brooke Astor, Oscar de la Renta, Diane von Furstenberg, Anh Duong, Carolina Herrera, among others.

I went to Duke with Brooke de Ocampo. Back then she was a nice person (probably still is). She is also clever and bright. She never lacked for friends and basically I found her to be non-offensive in any way. Her book is miserable and certainly does not do justice to her intellect and her depth which, back in college she demonstrated herself to have. I am hoping that she was doing a "piss take," (as the Brits say) on herself and her friends by doing this book. To think that anyone of depth and substance would find this book interesting or have any value is, at the least, a massive venture into narcissism. It is absolutely one of the most vapid, self-aggrandizing, pitiful and crass things I have ever seen. This is sad because I knew her as a classy person. Hopefully, she will extricate herself from the mindless, pitiful "snobissimos" she hangs around with and produce something that is reflective of her talent and taste. I hope that people would be willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and separate the person from the pathetic product(s) - I paged through a friend's copy of her Bright Young Things London in the hopes that she had actually produced something of merit - it was equally as limp. In sum, give both books a miss.

According to the New York Observer, this is an "astoundingly vapid text, which intersperses a comical parade of typographical errors throughout its dull drumbeat of name-dropping."
I agree. A friend just lent me her copy and I can hardly believe how terrible this book is.

This book attests to what paying a publicist can do for book sales. I bought the book because I had heard about it, and was sorely disappointed when I opened the cover. Voila! A bunch of nobodys who've done nothing in their wealthy lives to merit being in a book. Either they were friendly with the author or merely flattered when asked to be photographed for the book. The photographs are fine, in and of themselves, but the subjects leave something to be desired. The text is as light weight as souffle... the book would lose nothing without it. Indeed, this is the priciest non-book I've ever seen. Don't be fooled by the hype. Trust me, the only "Bright" thing about this book is the title which Ms. De Ocampo unfortunately lifted from another author's prior book. Shame on Assouline for publishing such tripe. They should have stopped publishing books after their exquisite David Seidner's Portraits. Now that was book-worthy. And Laurence's Private Dreams of Public People.

I tried to come up with all sorts of ways to poke fun at the pretentiousness of this book, but really, what's the point? If beautiful people in New York City want to create a volume in which they can feature other beautiful people, their beautiful homes and beautiful families, and write glowingly about the beautiful lives they lead, and then sell it to themselves, the envious, and the just plain nosy, who am I to complain?

Far more risible is the introduction by William Norwich, in which "these meritocrats -- don't call them aristocrats" are painted not only as the apotheosis of style, but also of social concern, enlightened world view, forward-looking design, and folks-next-door approachability. In fact, three quarters of these "meritocrats" I'd never heard of before ... and most of those whose names I recognized (Guinness, Lauder, Herrera, another Lauder, Von Furstenburg [and one of the Miller sisters], Hermès, etc.) came more from their families' prosperity and fame than from the meritocratic achievements of the individuals themselves.

Still, the pictures are pretty enough, and the writing (apart from Norwich's) unobjectionable. And maybe it wasn't the subjects' fault they showed up in this embarrassing book. If one of my friends called up and said she was assembling a picture book of obscure Seattle book reviewers and wanted me in it, I might oblige her just out of friendship. But I'd make sure not to leave my copy sitting around where visitors could see it.

In all, this title has a certain voyeuristic value, from the pre-September 11 era. But I hope those of us outside the rarified little world of New York Society don't take it for a lot more than that.

Brooke de Ocampo invites us back into the homes of Bright Young Things, only this time she opens the doors to London's most stylish and enterprising trendsetters. Bright Young Things London is the highly anticipated follow-up to the successful New York edition. This lush, elegant book is an enthralling journey through the homes of the most envied and emulated residents of one of the world's most envied and emulated residents of one of the world's most exciting cities. Step inside the fabulous lives of 40 architects, artists, designers, and writers to discover why they embody everything London is known for: wit, cutting-edge style, and glamour. Along with elegant photographs by Vanity Fair photographer Jonathan Becker are intimate anecdotes written by the people who know these bright young things best: Claus von Bulow writes about his daughter Cosima; Ewan and Eve MacGregor rave about the home David Adjaye designed for them; Michael Kors fawns over his muse, Kim Hersov; and Paul Smith writes about Robert Violette. Bright Young Things London captures the spirit of the city while paying tribute to its international influences. It is just as addictive in London as it was in New York.

Brooke de Ocampo has hied herself to London and produced a book that does for the brilliant, educated, and exceptionally wealthy young elite of that city what her earlier title did for their counterparts in New York. The difference this time, unfortunately, is that she decided to let other Bright Young Things do the writing as well as open their homes and pose for photographs. And so while the writing in the original BYT was relatively unobjectionable celebrity journalism, a good deal of the writing in BYT London doesn't even rise to that level. On the other hand, the introduction by Nicholas Coleridge runs rings around its BYT counterpart by William Norwich, if only because it's so much less gushing in its praise for the people being profiled.

Apart from the writing, though, this book is a lot like the first one. Beautiful people, beautiful homes, beautiful children, beautiful photos. The selection of people covered seems, if anything, slightly broader than that in BYT. Whatever your reaction to the first book, I imagine it'll be about the same to this one ... unless, perhaps, you happen to be, or be related to, one of the people featured in it.

As every showcase-kind of book, there are no words or suggestions. Nice to watch, excellent print quality, good choice for your graphics design bookshelf.
