This complex, mesmerizing first novel is both a traveler's tale and a lament for the home left behind. In the case of Michelle, a young American, her childhood home is barely remembered. But even when her body was sitting at the dinner table, her mind wandered: "I never knew when I was doing it. I tried to be my own jailer, but my mind was too quick for me. It slipped out between breaths, and I never knew it had gone until someone called to me from far away to come back and answer for my mind's behavior." What propels her is a search for a truer origin, a spiral path that will take her to the Dominican Republic, where her grandfather once owned a dilapidated house. On her way, she falls in with Tollimi, a political worker with a gift for disguising himself, for slipping the bonds of identity, that is even better-developed than Michelle's. Readers whose interest in the West Indies and Caribbean is stirred by Burning the Sea will find it makes a brilliant--and equally well-written--companion volume to Nelly Rosario's novel of Dominican family life, Song of the Water Saints. --Regina Marler
Book Description
In an airport in the Dominican Republic, two searchers are drawn together by a suggestive smile and a shared sense of longing. Michelle is a young American with holes in her past and a need to wander so strong that she walks in her sleep. Tollomi is a native of the West Indies, thoroughly Americanized by education and in search of his truer self. Haunted by elusive secrets of the past, they forge an intense connection that allows them to comprehend each other's secrets while remaining blind to their own. For Tollomi, the route to salvation lies in his deep involvement in Dominican politics; for Michelle, it is the rebuilding of a family home, long abandoned, which she hopes will hold the key to her lost memories. Michelle's blindly obsessive drive to complete construction and Tollomi's passionate love affair with a young Dominican man whose brother is involved in a growing revolutionary movement, pulls both into the vortex of volatile tensions between Dominicans and Americans surrounding increasing tourism and a national election, setting in motion an explosive series of events both heartbreaking and transcendent. In this remarkable debut novel, Sarah Pemberton Strong's poetically simple language enhances a story of emotional dislocation, cultural identity, and the powerful forces of memory and desire.

Customer Reviews:
Very enjoyable Summer read.......2003-09-17
Burning the Sea is a refreshing novel without a traditional love story. The mix of politics and personalities made me unable to put it down. The scenery is rich and the story is intellegent and introspective.
Beautiful and Wisely Written.......2003-08-04
Burning the Sea is one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read. The novel drifts back and forth between the internal worlds of two intricately interconnected and riveting characters; determined by and reconciling pasts of sexual, racial and cultural repression. In allowing the reader seamlessly into their minds and logic Sarah Strong gives powerful evidence to larger conditions of world trade, colonialism and globalization and the intricate locus' of power that are prescribed, inherited, navigated, and ultimately internalized in a breadth of personal formations.
Sarah Strong knows how to write from voices whose believability is articulated through her ability to reveal their pain, blind spots, vulnerabilities, and hidden strengths by guiding us into their very human thoughts. This is a wise and perceptive novel, a mystery about two awakening minds and one of the most engaging and intimate books I've ever read...Burning the Sea is the kind of book where I realize how generous the author's act of writing truly is.
Excellent.......2002-07-20
What a great book! I savored every moment of it. Beautifully written, strong characterization, rich with history and cultural and political ideas and information, and at the bottom of it all, a really good story.
Wonderfully written- intriguing book!.......2002-05-30
Burning the Sea awakens and enlivens the emotions! It is full of suspense, love and pain. SPS has done a fantastic job in capturing the readers hearts with her complex characters. I have not been able to put this book down since the minute I started it.
Fabulous.......2002-05-15
I loved this book. It is a compelling story, beautifully written, suspenseful and evocative. I stayed up way too late at night reading it, thinking about it, wondering how it would turn out. I laughed, I cried, and I was sorry that it had to end.

Customer Reviews:
Captivating Story.......2006-08-27
This story is awesome. Saikano is a heart wretching story about one couple's will to live and love in the mist of war even in the event of the end of the world. The female lead is a shy, clumsy girl who has been modified by the military into the ultimate weapon. Her boyfriend is just a regular guy trying to come to grips by what is happening to his girlfriend. The author/illustrator does a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. The artwork is sketchy but this story is an absolute must read for any Manga fan. This Manga is for mature readers. It is 7 volumes.
A story this good deserved art and writing to match........2006-03-10
I really wanted to like this manga. The story is compelling, the reader can identify with the characters, and the ending is EXTREMELY disturbing and thought-provoking. There are, however, two big problems with the series as a whole.
One, while the draftsmanship is competent enough to get the point across, the sketchy, tossed-off character art looks unskilled to my eye. The lines are all of the same width, and while computer compositing is used extensively to try to give a sense of depth, the lack of contrast makes the whole affair look somewhat monotonous. It is serviceable art, but no more.
But the real failure of Saikano is the writing. Words in a graphic narrative should be as few as possible and carefully chosen. Takahashi's characters talk too much, drowning any emotional resonance in endless dialogue--their internal monologues are especially bad. The dialogue itself isn't terrible, there's just far, far, too much of it. the pages are jammed with it, giving the manga a very cluttered, claustrophobic feel that makes for an unpleasant reading experience. In my first review, I laid a hefty portion of blame on the translation team, but upon re-reading the series I realize that I was being unfair (sincerest apologies, Mr. Caselman). The translation is actually quite decent, with only a few obvious missteps. The blame lies with the source material. _Saikano_ has a serious telling-instead-of-showing problem.
There are so many moments in this manga that could have been great, if only the characters had known when to shut up, if only the dialogue had been a little less maddeningly vague, if only the art had been up to the task, if only, if only, if only. Too many "if onlys". It's still worth reading for the story, but the missed opportunities made me sadder than the tragic human drama _Saikano_ attempts to describe.
Incredible.......2005-12-22
Saikano is one of the most incredible manga I have ever read. However, its not for everyone. Saikano is the most depressing story I have ever read, and this volume in particuar is heartbreaking. I cried my eyes out reading it.
The one problem I have with this release is that Viz translates all the sound effects and they are really really ugly. Dont let that stop you from buying it, just be aware that some of the art is ruined by the translation.
A sweet and sad love song.......2005-07-20
I had first heard of the anime adaptation of Saikano, but being more of a manga fan myself I went to read that instead. The series itself is interesting, as you don't find out who's fighting who, and what it's all over. Maybe it's better that way, you can't really put yourself for any particular side or point of view about the war itself. Because the war isn't really the story.
Shuji and Chise begin their relationship like many normal high school couples, in that sweet, awkward, and innocent manner that many of us remember. However, their relationship is complicated by the fact that Chise is the ultimate weapon in this war, and as she becomes more capable in her duty as a weapon, her humanity is stripped away. As the war moves in on their sleepy town, they try to fall in love.
For myself, it takes something very well written to get me emotional, and I found myself nearly in tears by the end of several volumes. You know where the series is headed, and especially by the sixth volume, it's very apparent that it will not be a happy ending for Chise and Shuji. It's an extremely emotional story, but also very violent and sexually explicit at times, so a warning to parents. However, it's never thrown in there just for the sake of having sex and violence; it's vital to the storyline. The violence shows the horror of war and how it intimately effects those involved. Sex is present because the characters are desprately trying to hold on to something. Chise wants to feel love to remind herself that she truly is human.
In essence, this is a sweet, funny, sad, and heartbreaking series to read. In honesty, it is the best that I have read, and is well worth the money.
A Love Story for everyone.......2005-06-30
I usually hate any love stories. I just meet them with cold unethusiasm because no one seems to get it right enough. Well, this story doesn't just get it right, it gets to the point that anyone-even the cynic- can see love as the most beautiful and painful thing there is.
The thing I noticed about the story is that the situation with Chise is treated in a very unusual way- probably the best of any high-schooler-in-a-war-zone story I've ever seen. The military talk is technical, official, and it completely goes over Chise's head- which is why it's perfect, because realistically they wouldn't break formalities to accomadate one confused schoolgirl, even if she is the megaweapon. So it sounds authentic, but not tedious at all. It sets up the book as more believable and Chise as more likable.
The story's in Shuji's point of view most of the time, but it goes to Chise once in a while. So you hear everything first hand from one of the lovers. And you see how much his love for Chise consumes and scares him, but not in a sappy way-in a very heavy, desperate, and determined way. It literally puts love in perspective. There's a lot of words, but they're emotional words, and you'll find yourself going slower than you usually would with a manga so Shuji's deep inner thoughts on love reaches you better. You'll read them over and over and then sit quietly in reflection. This manga is something that has a lot of reread value, because of course everyone's feelings on love changes as time goes on.
The art is... what I'd call evanescently innocent. Most of the pictures look a little ghostly. But the characters are cute abnd childish for the seriousness of the story, and sketchy. Though highly stylized, it fits the plot perfectly. Saikano's trademark feature, though, would be the nonstop blushing.
The relationships between all the characters-major and minor- are simply amazing.I f you've ever been in love, it'll break your heart- and if you haven't, you'd wish you'd had been just so you could understand.

Faith & Money: Understanding Annual Giving in Church
ASIN: 0664502164 |
Book Description
A careful, conservative, thoroughly prepared study of doctrine. It is Wesleyan-Arminian and thoroughly evangelical. Attention is given to history of doctrine, comparative religions, and the ethics and practices of the Christian life. Cloth.
Customer Reviews:
Wesleyan-Arminian theology.......2005-09-30
This interesting book is a textbook, created by a group of Nazarene educators, and designed to give the reader a firm grounding in Wesleyan-Arminian theology. It covers everything from the history of doctrine, through comparative religions, and on to Christian practice and ethics.
This book is, and has been since the 1960s, a basic book for Nazarene studies, and is still used by many Nazarene colleges. The editor, W. T. Purkiser (1910-92) was a noted Nazarene pastor and theologian. Indeed, for anyone interested in understanding the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition, whether Nazarene or otherwise, this book is a wonderful resource. Now, as might be expected with a textbook, it is rather dry and academic sounding. But, that said, it is a fascinating book of theology, one that I highly recommend.
Informative.......1999-04-25
If you have questions about Weslian theology Purkiser's book is a great place to have many questions answered. However, this is not an easy read. It would be best to read this book with your Bible and a good dictionary handy. Some of the terms are never defined in the length of the book.

A non toy collector book.......2007-10-02
Do not spend your money on this and all Dana books.Unless you want to see a bunch of letters and photos of listed cars that are not a collector items.Majorette items do half of the book.If you are lookin for a book on die cast models cars, buy something by an english.
Almost but not quite..........2007-07-21
I've just seen this book at a local bookstore. I was pretty excited when I found it and started to browse. But then, I became a little disappointed! The author gives a few pages to companies like Corgi and Dinky, and far too many to Majorette. I would say that the Majorette part is almost one tenth of the book! Overall the photos are pretty good and there's some good information too.
I didn't buy it, but maybe I would later, and only if I find it at a very, VERY, low price!
Not what I was expecting........2006-01-29
The books has many companies listed and gives histories but gives a generic price range. I mainly purchased this book for 1:18 scale models and was sad to see that a roughly half of my collection is not even listed in the book.
not what i thought.......2004-06-26
This book has a review on almost every kind of toy car, but leaves out the prices of a lot of them. There is almost no selection for hot-wheels, but there is a lot of selection for matchbox. My problem is that I have cars with no model numbers, which makes this book useless. I was able to find ERTL and a few others I had though.
New Guide For Diecast, White Metal and Other Toy Car Fans.......2002-04-03
A great new, year 2002 softbound 336 page volume. There are more than 800 brands of cars included, from 1910 to 2000. An interesting history is provided, as well as current values and buying and selling tips. The book covers Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Corgi, Johnny Lightning,Tomica and more. There's detailed information about scale, evaluating models, and insights into buying and selling. Comprehensive guide for the collector.

tinsel forever.......2006-06-24
This is a very beautiful book. I've never seen one like it. I read it from cover to cover the first night. Rosemary Warren and Marcia Ceppos have made a new fan. The photographs themselves make it worthwhile. Every designer should pick it up.
Very Inspirational !.......2006-06-23
I found this Tinsel Trading book to be beautiful, creative and easy to learn from. The pictures, the styling, the trims, all amazing. I need to visit the store.
The ideas were inspirational. I have already begun two of the projects. (I got excited and couldn't decide on which one I liked more!)
I am going to try to complete four projects over the summer.
Great Book, I recommend it to everyone.
Sadly Disappointing.......2006-06-08
As a former resident of New York City who "haunted" the numerous trimmings, flower and ribbon shops adjacent to New York's garment center, this was one shop that I would particulary enjoy getting lost in. It was a fabulous melange of "stuff" for trimming everything, much of it found by happenstance in the original cramped, dimly lit shop.
I never knew what I would find there and I especially drooled over the sad and neglected-looking antique metallic trims, tassels, fabrics, et al., buying a trim here, a tassel there, adding it to my stash for one day's sumptuous project.
One never really saw a proprietor about and would wonder who would pop out of the dark caverns of shelves and cabinets unexpectedly. This made the place a bit mysterious and fun all at once.
I have not been down to Tinsel Trading in many years, although judging from the photos in the book, it appears to have a new feel about it with order, spaciousness and brightness replacing the dim and cramped aisles of shelves and boxes. The shops look very inviting......although I must admit to a bit of nostalgia for the mystery of the former!
I was truly looking forward to seeing this book and the accompanying utilization of some of the many old-style trimmings that the shop specialized in, but there was hardly a hint of what was it's mainstay that could have been showcased in some really sophisticated or antique-inspired projects. I especially enjoyed reading the history of the shop and took particular note of the photo of the current basement "filled with years of treasures"!
With very few exceptions there was, sorry to say, nothing really inspiring at all about the featured decor and projects.
A white wicker hamper having a few silk flowers glued to the corners, a lampshade with too-heavy looking feather trim at the bottom edge were amateurish at best along with a couple of covered boxes also shown. Things of this caliber, we see all day long in the endless parade of cutesy, tacky, tasteless, childish, American "craft" magazines that appeal mainly to "terminal beginners" and not to those who are starving for and who appreciate more sophisticated, inspiring, ideas.
There also seems to be a bit too much repetition of photos showing the same objects over and over again....this takes up a few too many pages.
Sorry to say, I have returned this book...I expected a better representation and taste level coming from this venerable shop.

Customer Reviews:
Ribbon Trims book review.......2005-09-16
As a new to ribbon embellishments person I found this book very well presented. The coil binding allows the book to lay flat when following instructions. The written descriptions and drawings were clear and easy to follow. I liked the way the author rated each of the trims..easy, intermediate and challenging. She also make some suggestions for how to use each of the trims. The one thing that would have helped me was to have pictures of the applications. I would recommend this book for those interested in ribbonwork and in sewing generally.
really wonderful book.......2002-09-28
since seeing some of candace kling's masterpieces in a threads' publication, i have been fascinated by what can be done with ribbons. i have a few other ribbon trim books, but they don't come near this one in terms of variety of techniques and quality of directions for ribbon trim. and its much cheaper than many other books that offer less.
there are no ribbon flowers here, which is fine with me, since ribbon flowers are well covered in many other books. this book offers smocked, gathered, folded and looped linear trims, the kind that can turn a department store hat into something unique, or make a dress stand out, or give pillows a custom-upholstered air, just to dash off a few of the possiblities.
the photographs not only give really clear pictures of the finished products (not a universal characteristic of textile books), they are very well compposed (and amusing, like the illustration that combines a handmade ribbon trim with microchips). the directions are very good, not only for the experienced crafter, but even for the person who has never picked up a needle.
some of the techniques might even work well for wrapping packages. i can just imagine the effect of christmas presents trimmed with some of the quicker types under the tree.
excellent book, excellent price.
Great Book!.......2000-08-04
I just got this book yesterday. Stayed up late going through it. It is well laid out, easy to follow instructions, great illustrations of the steps in making the trim and color photos of the finished result are inspriational. Spiral binding is great as well. If you are looking for different ways to trim clothing or household sewing projects, get this book.

Book Description
When you cross over the threshold of your home or apartment, what is your initial reaction? Are you inclined to kick off your shoes, pour yourself a glass of wine, and sink into the sofa with the evening paper? Or are you overwhelmed by the urge to pull your hair out, burn the futon couch you've had since college, and throw something -- anything -- over your latest horticultural failure: the skeleton of a ficus that sits leafless in the corner? The first rule of creating a comfortable living space is getting rid of the headaches, and Terence Conran has all the advice you need to get started. He also lays some inspirational groundwork for decorating your home to fit your life. Conran addresses four key concepts, Elements, Comfort, Function, and Detail, in depth, providing advice on everything from space and light to the importance of adding your own personal touches.
Customer Reviews:
Easy Living by Terry Conran.......2003-09-19
Purchase this book if your objective is to get good ideas on the
subject of interior design. The author describes comfort zones
in multiple dimensions i.e. relaxation, touch, sleep and bath.
Relaxation is defined as mental breathing space. Touching
refers to how various textures of fabric evoke physical
responses. There is a section on functionality of interior
decorating. Functionality encompasses orderliness in the living
space. That is, a limited space may be utilized for storage,
shelving, hanging and containing personal objects.
The book is colorful. The artwork provides many perspectives
on how to emulate the interior designs depicted in the setting
of your own home, living or work space. This work will assist
you in optimizing the living space and making it visually
appealing.
An easy book from the master.......2000-12-22
Easy Living is another masterpiece of the master. What can I say? It seems that, as he gets older, he turns more and more easy living himself.
As he says (in another words): "I write a book because I hope you'll read it. Please, don't miss the text of this book". And he's absolutely right, the text is the best part of it; where he teaches everything he knows and believes. All in a very simple way. Believe it or not, the photographs turns into mere coadjuvants here, nonimportant decoration items. But you won't need them!
Conran, together with Niemeyer and Corbusier are the masters of modern living (to me, myself and I, of course). When I find myself in front of one of my masters criatures I surrender because that's the only thing I can do! Admire my masters talent.
Beautifully written.......2000-10-26
This book was marvelous. I enjoyed the fact that the book had no strict guidelines about decorating, just a kind of common sense approach. Now, if you are looking for step by step, (which I was) this may not be for you. But give it a try anyway. It may surprise you!
An Honest Overview Book about Modern Living.......2000-10-14
This book is divided into several components ie. elements, comfort, function, detail which are further broken down into small components. Pictures are used sparingly & most of them are taken from the same source anyway. I do not learn anything new in this modern living book but rather, reinforcing what I have already learnt from other interior books throughout the years. Just because Terence Conran is rendered as the guru of modern living, it doesn't imply that he's the person that has reinvented the wheel but just that person with the extra edge or confidence to apply what we have already known all along about modern living, that person who opts to lead a simplistic life. I'm very appreciative of him of stressing one point about the rigidity of minimalistic living, & people keep mixing up the word "minimal" living with "modern" living. Whilst it's true that their fundamentals are more or less the same, they still aren't the same thing.
Simple Living.......2000-01-25
I love the Conran's shop in Japan. It's simple, but makes me fun. There are simple interior in this book. But less colorful, I felt something missing.

Book Description
Evolutionary computation is one of the fastest growing areas of computer science, partly because of its broad applicability to engineering problems. The methods can be applied to problems as diverse as supply-chain optimization, routing and planning, task assignment, pharmaceutical design, interactive gaming, and many others within the signal processing domain. The book is an outgrowth of successful SPIE short courses taught by the author. The examples span a range of applications and should be useful to a variety of readers with different backgrounds and expertise.

Unique contribution for signal processing.......2000-10-16
The book is excellent. It provides a comprehensive description of evolutionary computation applied to almost every facet of signal processing: classification, clustering, time series, system identification, etc. The final chapter provides some real insight on how to design evolutionary algorithms that is very helpful. The material is well presented and easy to understand. I really like it and the cost is reasonable.
Book Description
* Focuses only on elastic lidars and directly related topics.
* Evaluates all of the major inversion and analysis methods.
* Covers an emerging field that is generating a lot of interest.
Book Description
Unlike books that focus on the devices used in links, such as lasers and photodiodes, among others, this text focuses on the next level. It covers the collection of devices that form a link, how the individual device performance affects the link performance, or the reverse. Analog links are used for the distribution of cable TV signals, and in conveying the signals to and from antennas (so called antenna remoting). The design of analog links differs significantly from digital links which are primarily used in telecommunications.

Book Description
Time division multiplexing (TDM) has been the fundamental basis for adding capacity to digital telecommunications networks for decades. However, within the past two years, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) has been emerging as an important and widely deployed complement to TDM. Sales of systems based on the new technology have risen at breathtaking speed. The driving force behind this sales explosion was the unexpected rapid exhaustion of long distance fiber network capacity. This fiber exhaust, combined with favorable economics for WDM, led to the use of this technology over other alternatives.
The WDM deployment raises fundamental and challenging problems that require novel and innovative solutions. This volume presents papers from an interdisciplinary workshop held at DIMACS on multichannel optical networks. Leading computer science theorists and practitioners discussed admissions control, routing and channel assignment, multicasting and protection, and fault-tolerance. The book features application of theoretical and/or algorithmical results to practical problems and addresses the influence of practical problems to theoretical/algorithmic studies. The volume can serve as a text for an advanced course in computer science, networking, and operations research.

Customer Reviews:
It took 24 hours, I went from "Gloria who?" to being her big fan .......2005-12-31
Truthfully I had never heard of Gloria Lynne but now I have a much larger vantage point from which to appreciate this lovely vocal artist. I particularly enjoyed Gloria's descriptions of growing up in Harlem- with its rag tag moments and drama there is an essence of culture and beauty that is captured as she lived it- Interspersed throughout the book are character sketches of other well know artists including Dinah Washington among others. There is so much honesty and generosity in these pages- it is a very very rich and poignant story- her huge story, and will bring much insight to any reader. I literally didn't put it down , ordered my first Gloria Lynne cd the next day. she is as good as it gets - a real original- sweet.
The Good Honest Truth.......2003-02-13
Gloria Lynne was astoundingly forthcoming about her trials, personal and professional, which I appreciated. Too often memoirs are vague and less than honest. In I Wish You Love, Miss Lynne gives readers an honest accounting of the record business and the difficulties she faced in the industry. And among all of the hard subjects she tackled, this book is full of humorous anecdotes that add to its appeal. I highly recommend it. It was a truly enjoyable and insightful read.
warm salad blues.......2002-12-30
I approached this book with enthusiasm, only to fall at the first chapter. Uninspired writing and clumsy dialogue lead to a very unsatisfying read. In truth, I had to put the book down on several occasions, however I did persevere to the end. Unfortunately this book gave me the Warm Salad Blues.
Only one star for effort.
For All You Jazz Lovers--PICK IT UP!.......2000-05-09
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was just great. I'm telling everybody I know. If you're a Gloria Lynne fan, a jazz fan, a music lover or just a lover of good books--this one's for you. Pick it up!
An Inspiring Memoir.......2000-05-02
In terms of content, style, and language, this book ranks amongthe best. It has all of the flavor of '60s Harlem vernacular--jazzy,sexy and cool. It places in each time period, from the 30s to 90swith ease, and carries you on a terrific journey through the music world. I was particularly impressed with the style of the memoir, the timeline, the historical information, the personal stories--I heard Gloria Lynne's voice mixed with a wonderful literary style by the book's co-author. It was so refreshing to read an autobiography where you knew the two authors spent time together; too often these books are written from a distance and in the literary voice of the writer, and not the voice of the person's whose lifestory is being told. This was a great blend, a great match. Gloria Lynne's story deserves to be told. There is much we all can share, relate to, empathize with, love and understand.
