The Mundo are a new tribe, created by the intermingling of escaped Black slaves and native Indians in the Mexican Sierras. Ineligible for academic funding, a husband-and-wife team of African American anthropologists pose as Christian missionaries to secure sponsorship to live among the Mundo and study their culture. This soul-stifling deception underlies the family tragedy at the heart of Alice Walker's novel, her first in six years. The father, preaching the message of his puritanical Protestant sponsors, is "sucked into the black cloth" of Christianity and blinded to the Mundo's life-affirming ways. When he discovers his daughter Magdalena's affair with a young Mundo, he beats her with a belt, thus estranging himself from both her and the younger daughter, Susannah. The first of several narrative voices to speak is his. Dead, he has become an "angel" who observes his daughters from the "other side" and seeks to make amends for the pain he inflicted on them in life.
It is the conceit of By the Light of My Father's Smile that angels have complete access to the consciousness of the living beings they observe. One of the book's very first scenes involves the ebullient lovemaking of Susannah and her partner, Pauline, reported in sweaty detail by the angelic paternal voyeur. Highly explicit, this set piece is a kind of guerrilla assault on our sensibilities, preparing us to receive Walker's urgent message--that sexuality and spirituality are inextricable, that denying one causes the other to atrophy as well. The blessings of fathers are, according to this canon, essential to the sexual flowering and spiritual maturity of their female offspring. It is in the loss, the conferring, and the claiming of these blessings that the novel finds its narrative thrust.
By the Light of My Father's Smile is intended perhaps less as a story than as a parable presenting Walker's cosmology for the new millennium--one that synthesizes ancient and modern wisdoms in a way that's as artistically daring as it is politically correct: Sex is good, repression is evil. Dominant is bad, distaff is good. European culture is dead meat, the third world is wise, there is ongoing commerce between the living and the dead, great orgasms shall set us free. Many readers will agree that a world built upon these precepts surely would be preferable to the one we now inhabit. Here, as in previous fictions, Walker the storyteller is spellbinding, Walker the preacher-theorist, less so. On the other hand, what other novelist risks so bravely or with such generosity, and seeks to give so much? With the proper mindset, Walker assures us, anyone can become a member of the Mundo tribe. --Joyce Thompson
Book Description
By the Light of My Father's Smile is Alice Walker's first novel in six years--a stunning, original, and important book by "one of the best American writers of today" (The Washington Post).
A family from the United States goes to the remote Sierras in Mexico--the writer-to-be, Susannah; her sister, Magdalena; her father and mother. And there, amid an endangered band of mixed-race Blacks and Indians called the Mundo, they begin an encounter that will change them more than they could ever dream. Moving back and forth in time, and among unforgettable characters and their stories, Walker crosses conventional borders of all kinds as she explores in this magical novel the ways in which a woman's denied sexuality leads to the loss of the much prized and necessary original self; and how she regains that self, even as her family's past of lies and love is transformed.
By the Light of My Father's Smile presents, as Alice Walker puts it, "a celebration of sexuality, its absolute usefulness in the accessing of one's mature spirituality, and the father's role in assuring joy or sorrow in this arena for his female children." It explores the richness and coherence of alternative culture, experience of sexuality as a celebration of life, of trust in Nature and the Spirit, even as it affirms the belief, as Walker says, "that it is the triumphant heart, not the conquered heart, that forgives. And that love is both timeless and beyond time."
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
This book well move you.......2006-02-02
I love Alice Walker. She is an exceptional writer. "By the Light of My Father's Smile" is as easy to read as "The Color Purple" and as inspirational as The "Temple of My Familiar." Her ideas about the spirituality of sexuality are so beautiful.
"By the Light of My Father's Smile" gathers up so much of women's history and experience, all previously ignored or misrepresented and takes this history/experience as an important given, uses it to explain our human quest to seek sexual and spiritual fulfillment, to know ourselves. Speaking so honestly about female sexual hurt, female sexual maiming, female sexual shaming within the family, within the father/daughter relationship and imagining a way to heal this experience was powerfully brave of Walker. I felt like I was is a long darkened and forbidden room now amazingly and lovingly explored, revealed. I felt such relief to read this attempt at restoring female sexuality to an altar of acceptance, respect, love, social esteem. It seemed almost possible to live in a society, a family that really could anticipate female sexuality with joy, freedom and respect on an equal footing with male sexual importance. But my awe and gratitude for the subject and Walker's attempt is still tempered by my real sense, in the reading of it, that it was not entirely successful. I'm not sure why. Some of the sexual imagery, the dominating type sexual play in some scenes seemed artificial, unreal. If it were real, it wouldn't be so undisturbing to the participants, it would raise issues, and it would be unsettling, not just accepted as part of their sexual bliss identity.
But over all, the story reads like a fable, a fairy tale, really and that is fine with me. It would be truly a shame for anyone to ignore to gift that Alice has given us through her vision. This book is exquisite to say the very least and the fact that is told from the point of view of a father looking down on his daughter is brilliant. Highly recommend especially for Walker fans.
A captivating book with many layers.......2005-09-19
I have read this book several times. The events are startling, the characters are fascinating and unexpected. The story is told from multiple viewpoints, which creates the effect of a flower opening for the reader. The themes of the book are universal: cultural differences, father-daughter relationships, sisters, death, afterlife, sexuality. It's all there! This is not a book for the uptight! For the open-minded only!
curiously voyeuristic.......2005-06-05
I had a difficult time putting this book down. However, I'm not sure if it was well written or if I was curious to see what happened next-much like reading a tabloid. The storyline regarding the fictitious Mundo felt contrived, much like the rest of the book. It was also difficult to follow which character was speaking at a given time. This is not one of my favorite Alice Walker pieces.
Not for everyone!.......2001-12-27
Alice Walker is one of those writers whose work has the power to reach out and touch you when you need it most. This and I believe many of her other works are meant to be read at certain critical points in a specific persons life. Points when it is necessary to come to terms with a particular complex of issues. I thought it was telling when one reviewer said that the pre-occupation by some of the characters in this book with their personal traumas was unrealistic. Trauma is by its very nature pre-occupying. And what becomes lodged in an individual persons psyche as a result of the trauma they have experienced is typically unique to that individual (no one can judge the magnitude of pain in anothers heart). As a person who has been hurt reading the words of Alice Walker not only lets me know that another is serving as a witness to my pain it also shows me that there is joy waiting behind a door that I hadn't even realized existed. And it is in those moments that I feel truly blessed my her writing. Perhaps this and her other works are not perfect, in truth they are not. But in that moment when she has captured the pain in ones heart and soul, given it voice and a means to move forward who cares if it isn't the perfect novel? I guess those who haven't felt the coldness of a heart alone and bereft. For my part I say thank you Alice and keep writing, at least for me!
Alice challenged her style and won!.......2001-10-15
I just finished reading this book. I enjoyed reading
it. The writing style was not like The Color Purple.
I think Alice Walker stretched her creativity by leaping
into creating a somewhat existentialist and poetic work of art.
Tapesty comes to mind when I think of this book. An
intersting, well written read.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2005-06-09
Before I bought the book, I read the negative reviews and disregarded them, thinking that anything Lori Wick writes is excellent. Now after reading the short stories, I think that it is safe to say that she needs to stick with novels. Wick tried to put more information into the short stories then necessary, which resulted in a poor development of plot and characters. Even for a dedicated Wick fan, this was a huge disappointment.
A very wonderful book full of short stories!.......2001-11-18
I really enjoyed this book, it was lovely to read. I
highly recommend it, for anyone who enjoys reading Christian
fiction.
Short stories you will love.......2001-04-27
As always, I was impressed my Lori Wick's fabulous gift to write down-to-earth stories with wonderful plots and loveable characters. Usually I am not a huge fan of short stories because I enjoy getting to know characters on a deeper level; however, Lori brought each person to life so when the charming story ended, I was sad to conclude a well developed story. A wonderful asset to the "Lori Wick Book Collection," and a great book to keep and read over and over again.
Bre's.......2000-12-16
I like Lori Wick's books well enough, but I was a bit uncertain about a book of short stories as I'm not a huge fan of short story writing, especially in a book format. I find I lose focus too quickly. This collection was a delightful surprise, however. Each story stood on its own and all had a message - something that not all Lori Wick books contain. In fact, I found that most of the stories have a greater impact and message, as well as more realism than many of Ms. Wick's novels. One tiny point annoyed me, however. I seem to remember that in "A Rancher's Lady", Shasta, an Australian, mentions that she used to work on a sheep ranch. I am an Australian and I can assure any disillusioned Americans out there that we do not have "ranches" in Australia. We call them "stations" instead. A silly thing for me to bother about, I know, but I must be truthful. All in all, a lovely addition to the library of any fan of Lori Wick.
not a favorite.......2000-06-02
I like Lori Wick and I liked many if not all of these stories, but the paragraphs at the end of each explaining where the idea for it had come rubbed me the wrong way. The writing was not at fault, but that extraneous paragraph was a design flaw.

This elegant velveteen hardcover includes a silk ribbon marker, making it a perfect gift or keepsake.
Customer Reviews:
thought provoking for the spirited soul ..........2002-08-12
Since purchasing WISDOM'S CHOICE, I have had the opportunity to read it and read it again. Each time I was challenged to stop and think not only about Kathryn's words but how they might apply to my own life and spiritual world view. Since I am someone who is quite spiritual I did not have much trouble accepting her thoughts or even the fact that she believes they came to her from a higher power. What I enjoyed most was the breaking down of simple words such as disease (dis ease) and nothing (no thing)and the pages that are filled with food for thought. The book does not preach but rather suggests that you take your own interpretation on what you read. Gently written yet seems to pack a soulful spiritual punch. Size and style make for a nice gift book. If you enjoy thinking about what you have read then this is a must have book. Go a little deeper with WISDOM'S CHOICE!
Providing a series of spiritual messages.......2002-08-08
Shapiro's spiritual experience resulted in her production of a journal transcribing the thoughts that were reaching her from beyond. Wisdom's Choice contains the messages which she received in a 40 day period, providing a series of spiritual messages average readers will easily absorb.
THIS BOOK WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.......2002-06-27
As a skeptic, I was hesitant to open Shapiro's book. But the words spoke to me and touched my heart in a way that I cannot express. Simple, elegent encouragement for this journey we call life! It's totally practical advice, too. Nothing out of the ordinary from this 'spiritual healer'. Thank you!
Wisdom's Choice: Guiding Principals from the Source of Life.......2002-05-22
I was sent this book by a friend. I had some time so I opened it up and started reading. I read one page and starting crying. It was so powerful, so perfect, so much where I was at the time. I couldn't put it down, yet I wanted to savor it and not finish. I know now I will go back to it many times. It is one of the simplest yet most profound books I've ever read. Before I finished it I could think of 20 people I wanted to buy it for and send it to.
This book will change lives, buy it and have it change yours.

Great reference book for vegans!!.......2006-08-02
This is my favorite cookbook and I use it all the time. I've always had a problem with cookbooks because I never have the right ingredients on hand. But, this cookbook has multiple versions of basic recipes so you can always find a version that fits what you have on in your cupboard. The index is also very helpful because you can look up key ingredients and find all the recipes that use it. Plus, this book has a vegan version of just about any recipe you could ever want to make.
There is a rather large section in the book about how to prepare wheat gluten from scratch using serveral methods and with several different flavors. It comes out delicious!
THE BEST VEGAN COOKBOOK EVER!!.......2002-06-03
please please PLEASE reprint this book, after reading so many great reviews I decided that I must have it!! And through much searching I found it at icon book store. I was so happy. I mean, to be honest I LOVE meat, however, I'm vegetarian for religious and health reasons. So when I saw someone say that they showed you how to make fake meat. I jumped at the chance!! This book is excellent!! No more spending lots of money on already processed veggie meats. I'm so happy. I love this book!!! If u find it GRAB IT QUICK. If you became a vegetarian because you hate meat, then don't even bother with this book. Because the stuff tastes real. Now I can have my fried UNchicken, and be happy and healthy. Beef, chicken, sausage, bacon, ham, fish, scallops, shrimp, cheese. You name it, this book tells you how to fake it. I'm so glad I have found this book.
Like I said, this is the best book for meat lovers who have gone vegetarian. I love my vegetables and all, but it's a good change from eating tofu all the time (even though I'm a tofu fanatic). With the techniques in this book, you can make almost any dish from other cookbooks. I love it!!
Anyway, I'm through rating and raving.

The canonical un-meat cookbook and more.......2002-02-21
This cookbook tends to be difficult to find, but if you want to prepare vegan faux-meat meals, there's simply no better cookbook. Burke's marinades are clever and obviously honed, and really live up to his promises.
Beyond his gluten techniques, all the other sections are great, too, and quite a few of the recipes are very simple and fast to prepare, which for me is a very important factor in purchasing a cookbook.
One important distinction is that while some vegan cookbooks embrace the view that vegan cuisine is fundamentally different from omnivorous cuisine, this cookbook is something of the opposite. Much of its focus is on using vegan foods to emulate meat, dairy, and eggs.
That's great, and I'm often in just the mood for the BBQ gluten (which is a spot-on match for good barbeque, incidentally) or any of his other great meat substitutes. But it's kind of a novelty, at some point, and so it's not one of those cookbooks for which I could say, "This is the only cookbook I ever use!" or such.
Still, that's not much of a detraction. Sure, sometimes I have to turn to another cookbook for what I want, but *Simply Heavenly* covers many areas, and it's the superlative for all of them. Put another way: I have never been disappointed with a recipe from this cookbook.
If you can find a copy of this, snatch it up quickly. It's inexpensive, contains great information, and fills what would otherwise be a very notable gap in my cookbook collection.
Soo Good!!!! This book has EVERYTHING!.......2001-06-06
I've been a vegan for 7 years. When I started out, I bought a ton of cookbooks. Now, this is the ONLY one I need. The recipes are easy and things I actually like to eat! Most vegan/vegetarian cookbooks are composed entirely of things with ingredients like avocado, eggplant, weird stuff I've never heard of, and always whole wheat everything, with a major lack of flavor and many recipes that don't even turn out! This book, on the other hand, has EVERYTHING, from interesting new exotic stuff, to (what most new vegans REALLY want), ways to make all your old favorites vegan and still just as good or BETTER! There are literally 1,400 recipes in this thing, and every single one I've tried is good. Want to make barbecue chicken? It's here. Eggplant parmesan? Yup. Vegan pizza that actually tastes like real pizza, with "cheez" and everything! Of course. Every imaginable style of cakes, cookies, pies, and puddings? You bet! And tons of delicious yummy vegetable dishes, fake meat dishes, soups, salads ... and random stuff like pancakes, biscuits, vegan fudge ... Basically, this book has EVERYTHING (and it's all 100% vegan). :)
The best Vegan Cookbook Ever!.......2000-01-05
This is truly a great book! There is a new 2nd edition out, so this book is back in print! Yeah! The title is the same, but it has the words Revised 2nd Edition across the top. This cookbook is a must for anyone wanting to eat or experiment with vegetarian cuisine. They are many fabulous recipes for making your own meat substitutes (pork, turkey, beef, chicken, ham, bacon, eggs, ice cream, and sausages), step by step directions to make make your own Tofu and Wheat Gluten, as well as a multitude of simply amazing vegetable dishes. This book is a must for everyone, whether or not they are a full time vegan. This cookbook is written simple enough for anyone to follow, but has dishes complex enough to interest even the most seasoned chefs. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and get this book!

#1 Book on Antique Limoges by Debby DuBay.......2006-07-11
Love this book and I highly recommend this book to collectors at all levels and specifically to hand painted Limoges porcelain collectors and china painters. Debby DuBay's books are absolutely beautiful and are useful price guides and reference books. The best books on the market - don't let the price keep you away from this book.
Collecting Hand Painted Limoges is a must for the collector!.......2006-06-15
I met Ms DuBay at a conference were she was the opening guest speaker on turning a passion into a profession and then throughout the week she lectured on Limoges porcelain. Dynamic is not a strong enough word for her! After meeting her I purchased all three of her books on Limoges. I love Collecting Hand Painted Limoges Porcelain because it covers the history of painting on porcelain and the women who had influences in the 19th -21st centuries, the art of china painting using examples from artists who are currently painting on porcelain and then she has a section that covers antique Limoges boxes to vases and another section that provides all of the back stamps. Absolutely wonderful book! I recommend all of her books on Limoges. (I even purchased her Potter book!)
Fantastic book for the collector of hand painted porcelain!.......2006-06-15
I love all of DuBay's books but this is my personal favorite! As a collector of antique Limoges porcelain and as a china painter - I use this book as a reference source. The unique pieces are fantastic and the information is informative yet interesting. Highly recommend.
LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2006-03-29
Fantastic book for the Limoges collector - I have just begun to collect and this book is a must! I also bought DuBay's Beatrix Potter book - her books are lovely.

Hard to believe this is out of print.......2003-02-24
Excellent book with superb diagrams and illustrations. I can't believe a book of this quality is out of print! I have always been very impressed by Time-Life books collections, and the woodworking series is no exception.
Outstanding Guide to the Use of the Router.......2000-05-18
This book is an excellent reference work and shop manual for the shaper and router. It is well illustrated and gives descriptions of commercially available jigs and attachments as well as practical designs for shop made accessories. I read this book at the home of a fellow woodworker and threatened to steal it from him. I can't wait to get my own copy.

Customer Reviews:
Great Manual!.......2007-10-05
I actually found this in the bargain books section at Borders about a year ago for $2.99! It's fantastic! The beginning explains not only tools you'll need, but tools of the trade in general. It has photographs of every tool, and explains the uses. After every topic, there is a chart which sums up the uses, and how to's. For example, it has a chart on pretty much every surface you might consider painting, and explains the best ways to clean, and prep them. The recipes for the paint colors are clear, and the instructions to acheive the finished looks are also clear. As with any book, it is important to read it, not just look at the pictures, and as with any instruction manual, it is important to take a chance and actually try the project yourself. Overall, even if I had paid $20.00 or more, I would've been happy with this book. It's great for a personal project library.

A lost art.......2005-08-02
This is a wonderful book in the series with wonderful reproductions of the posters of the decade. Makes a wonderful gift for someone who loves movies as well as a great coffee table book. Highly recommended
A trip down memory lane.......2005-03-04
When I first looked at this book, it was like going back to my childhood, well, sort of, it was so neat to see posters of some of my favorite films from back then and a lot from movies that I never knew they made. The artwork on those posters is most certainly something to see and admire!!! If you love art and or movies this is THE book to get you won't be disappointed!
Jaws, Star Wars, Grease, Taxi Driver do I even need to go on.......2003-08-26
Like the other decade books in this series Film Posters of the 70's is a sensational buy. You could either keep it intact as a collection of posters in a book to show and discuss with friends, or cut the book up and actually have a vast number of posters up on your wall. This book is about a third the size of your standard film poster and most movies are full page colour. Any of them would look great up on the wall.
The 70's gave the world Star Wars, Grease, The Godfather, Mad Max, Alien, Taxi Driver, Texas Chainsaw Massacure, Halloween, Rocky and a very blood thirsty shark who changed human perception of sharks for decades to come named Jaws. These films along with other greats fill this book. Roger Moore also took over from Connery as James Bond and Clint Eastwood made a heap of Westerns. Find them here as well.
5 stars all the way!.......2003-02-18
Excellent... add it to your book collection! If you are a Star Wars fan check this out!
a must.......2000-02-27
back in the day this was the best visual present.if the poster was cool then the movie would get Love.a picture can tell a thousand words.and the 70's had the coolest posters and arguable the best films in Movie History.before video tape you walk to the movie house and see the poster and the reaction you felt led you or back the other way.a solid must have book.

Book Description
For over sixty years, Arthur Wilde has been a motion picture publicist. In that time, he has been threatened with death, threatened with bankruptcy, threatened with blacklisting, and threatened with lawsuits. He's been seduced, beloved, betrayed, divorced, and fired more times than he can remember. In short, it's been quite a party.
Now, he has paused long enough to write down his memories of Hollywood as it was in the good old days. In his autobiography, "Honestly!", you can learn who were the wife beaters, the addicts, the charming rogues, the charmless prima-donnas, the saints, the geniuses, and the hapless victims.
It was Arthur's task to promote the positive images of Hollywood's screen idols and to hide the negative realities. He had to run interference and smooth out temperamental differences. He was generally the first person fired on any "difficult" set.
And of course, while the rogue's gallery of Hollywood was creating havoc with their shenanigans, Arthur Wilde, always the perfect gentleman, never, ever, got into any sort of trouble on his own..".Honestly!"
