Another Wonder.......2007-04-15
Even more compelling than his first in the series, this book continues the story of Menke, Nyai, Darsam et al. and the Dutch sugar baron occupation of Eastern and Central Java. More detail on the odious treatment of the natives in the name of European corporate greed. As a Dutch descendent married to a Javanese woman I now understand much better than she could tell me about that oppression, and marvel that they don't seem to stll hate us. Human love and concern for one another are seen to shine through though and it is hard to end this book without a tear. In addtion to a good story and interesting history, springled through it are jewels of universal wisdom worth quoting. These books should be required reading and a part of any world citizen's education. On to book number 3 - then I may re-read the 4th, which I read first.
Great book for thinking.......2007-01-13
This book is a great novel about Dutch occupation of Indonesia. Very interesting and good history presented in novel form.
So so good.......2006-05-29
This is the second book in the wonderfully written Buru quartet. Originally composed and recited orally while the author was in prison for political reasons, the story was published in 4 volumes. The main themes are colonialism, class structure, and injustice in 1900 Indonesia. The main characters are a young native (Javanese) student, and native Nyai (concubine of a Dutch colonialist), her children, and various other characters as they confront their roles, the expectations of that society, and the injustices that entails. So far, this has been one of the best series I have ever read. One just gets totally into this world and deeply enmeshed with the characters. This particular volume continues where the last one left off. The native/Dutch daughter of Nyai has been sent to the Netherlands, where she suffers from deep depression. The family in Indonesia are frantic to help her. What will happen? I don't dare say here because it will give too much away. Another continuation from Book 1 is the reappearance of "Fatso," as we discover who he is and why he is following members of the family. Finally, we discover what has happened to Anneliese's brother, Robert, and what dreadful fate awaited him. I recommend this book highly and hope that everyone will read this wonderful author.
Pramoedya Is An Indonesian.......2006-05-08
How could the Editorial review from Booklist get it oh so wrong? Pramoedya Ananta Toer is not a Malaysian and his books are not banned in Malaysia. I am from Malaysia and I read his book "Keluarga Gerilya" (Guerrila Family)for Malay Lieterature during my school days sometime in 1985. Pramoedya is an Indonesian and his books are banned in his native Indonesia. Please get these kind of informations correct, as otherwise it would be seriously embarassing.
Insight into A troubling time.......2004-08-20
I love this book. The language, struggles and emotional conflicts allow the reader to visualize the time and be move by the story page by page. Pramoedya Ananta Toer is a great writer and I would recommend him to everyone.

not all that its cracked up to be but still good!.......2007-02-21
After reading review after review claiming this book was absolutely fabulous and a must have, I had to get it. After reading it I can certainly say that it was a steamy read with lost of twists an turns, I could not put this book down! BUT its not 5 star material. The plot, while good could certainly have been better and hold more substance and at times the dialogue was really cheesy which is a real pet-peeve for me . This is not a bad read at all, in fact it is quite enjoyable but in no way is it 5 stars worthy.
Good pace and well written, but I didn't care for the storyline.......2007-01-29
This book is very different from her next two in the series. It is much gorier and almost reminded me of Ann Rice more then a JR Ward or Sherrilyn Kenyon. It is more of the standard fare with the vampire feeling an instant connection to the women, but there is nothing that really makes her standout from other women where you can see why she is special from everyone else he has met.
If you read the next two in the series, which are the best vampire books I have read and stand alone by themselves, you will most likely want to read this one. If you only get books every once in a while, pass on this one and go right to book 2 and 3. Each one in the series keeps getting better then the previous one and each one is unique.
SAME OLD, SAME OLD.......2005-09-12
A "whole new spin on the vampire legends"? Oh, come now! Makes me wonder just how many other vampire books the previous reviewer has read. We're talking yawnsville here: vampire (the hero of the story) who has been around for eons has grown weary of his immortal life, chances upon fair maiden and is irresistably drawn to her, finding the love of his life...his very, very, very, very, very long life, that is; and she, in turn, knows that he is destined to be the one true love of her life, too...even though she hasn't lived nearly as long as him. I am so SICK of that premise! Dress it up all you want with vampires and mystery plots, but it's still just your basic grocery store checkout lane romance novel.
Michelle Pillow puts a whole new spin on the legend of the vampires with this book........2005-09-01
Courtesy of Love Romances Reviews
Wow!!! Michelle Pillow puts a whole new spin on the legend of the vampires with this, the first book in her Tribes of the Vampire series. This book will keep readers engrossed from beginning all the way to the shocking twist of a climax at the end.
Hathor Vinceti has come to London to help her beloved Aunt Georgia run her bed and breakfast inn. One evening while trying to find a restaurant her aunt recommended, she gets lost and finds herself in a place she never imagined to exist. What she discovers is a dark underworld society where vampires rule and don't care who gets in the way of their fun.
Servaes is a 17th century French Marquis turned vampire who has grown weary of his long non-life and is only going through the motions to please others and keep the unruly young vampires in line. When he sees Hathor in the crowd at London's vampire club one night, he is immediately drawn to her for some unexplained reason. Something about her is different and though he can't understand it, he senses she may be very important to him.
Servaes and Hathor are drawn to each other from the first moment they see each other, but all is not easy in their love. The young vampires are jealous of their happiness, and will destroy it at all costs, and the Tribal Council, thought to be a myth by most vampires, is not happy about Hathor's introduction to their world. Can their love survive the dangers they face, and can Hathor truly accept Servaes for who, or what, he is?
This story is absolutely fascinating! It follows a slow but steady pace throughout much of the book, but there is plenty of action and intrigue, and of course romance, to keep readers captivated. Though Servaes and Hathor's story follows through to a more then satisfying ending, there are enough mysteries left in the story that are sure to be addressed again in future books in the planned series. Also, the stunning climax will leave readers gasping for breath at the totally unexpected turn of events. Though surprising, it will make readers shout with joy, and make them realize that was the only way this story COULD end.
The relationships between all the characters are well done and beautifully portrayed, especially the romance of Hathor and Servaes. All of the fears, frustration, tenderness, and love between them can be felt very strongly by the reader. One will also feel the hate and fear of the lesser vampires, the courage and underlying strength of the more powerful ones, such as Jiri, and the familial love between Georgia and Hathor. One will be hoping throughout, that the lovers find the happiness they both long for.
This is probably one of the best books this reviewer has read this year, and is one of those rare books she feels is totally deserving of the best rating possible to give. There was nothing disappointing about this book, except for some editing errors scattered throughout. Although the unresolved mystery subplots may leave fans wondering, this doesn't detract from the story. It's evident that these mysteries will be carried on into future books, where this world will be delved into with more detail. Well worth the time and money, don't wait! Run on over to NCP and pick this one up today! It is guaranteed not to disappoint.

Dark Fantasy meets Romance.......2005-04-27
After reading this book I did a little research and googled teh author's website. Turns out it's the first is series and I couldn't be happier. The vampires are dark, just like mean vampires should be. But, in the middle of a twisted, underground world where these baddies thrive, there cames one who is redeemable--Servaes. With a completely unexpected ending and the introduction of some very interesting side characters--Jiri (who I really hope will get his own book. I'm thinking of starting a fan club for him!) I couldn't recommend it enough. It seems this author really has a knack for building worlds-- no matter what genre. I am very impressed. Thanks for a great read!

What shapes the message of the church? The Bible and Spirit? Or society and culture? Os Guinness points out perils of compromise in the church growth movement.
Customer Reviews:
Dining With the Devil.......2005-10-29
This book spoke to the truth of the Bible as it lookes at the state of our churches. Though it was written 14 years ago it may be more applicable to today then then.
Prophetically Timely.......2005-04-06
Dining With the Devil is an interesting read, especially in light of the fact that the author, Os Guinness, is describing the very difficulties the church is facing today, even though this book was written over twelve years ago. It is difficult to know if his voice was prophetic or if very little has changed since the early nineties. I suspect both are true.
The book is subtitled "The Megachurch Movement Flirts with Modernity." We hear much more about postmodernity today than modernity, but this does not seem to detract from the book. Guinness warns that the Megachurch movement, which gained prominence in the eighties and nineties and continues to gain steam today, may be borrowing as much from the devil as from the Lord. And as Peter Berger warns, "He who sups with the devil had better have a long spoon." Guinness assesses the movement and warns that much of the foundation for the Megachurch Movement, which can be understood to be synonymous with the Church Growth Movement, is incompatible with Scripture. Some examples he provides are the uncritical use of marketing tools and management theories to induce growth in attendance. "When all is said and done," the author states, "the church growth movement will stand or fall by one question. In implementing its vision of church growth, is the church of Christ primarily guided and shaped by its own character and calling - or by considerations and circumstances alien to itself" (page 35). The heart of this question is one of authority - what will the church submit to as the ultimate authority? Will it be Scripture or will it be the ever-changing, ever-fickle demands of the culture? Is the audience sovereign, or is the message?
This book is short on names and specifics of individuals or churches, but long on analysis and warnings. The names Bill Hybel and Rick Warren do not appear at all. And thankfully this book is better-referenced than many of Guinness' other books, in which I have found his lax committment to footnotes exceedingly frustrating.
My only disappointment with this book is that much of it was repeated in Guinness' more recent book, Prophetic Untimeliness, which I found more timely and ultimately more helpful. If I had to recommend purchasing only one, I would recommend Prophetic Untimeliness. However, Dining With the Devil still makes for an interesting and challenging read, and one that at only 109 pages, can be accomplished in a short while. I recommend it.
A Prophetic View of Purpose Driven Mentality.......2004-11-05
Purpose Driven Church, Purpose Driven Youth, Purpose Driven Life, Purpose Driven coffee mugs, Purpose Driven music CD, Purpose Driven Calanders, Purpose Driven screen savers, Purpose Driven Bible covers, Purpose Driven this and Purpose Driven that. Everywhere we look we see the popular themes of Rick Warren and Bill Hybels. The Church in America is running after every teaching that generates more people without questioning the teaching. Pragmatic, and sometimes unbiblical, doesn't seem to matter anymore.
Os Guinness takes direct aim at Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, C. Peter Wagner, and George Barna in this short book by addressing the seeker sensitive, megachurch mentality that exists and is being pushed in nearly every seminary in America. He writes that the Church is flirting with modernity and loosing sight of our original purpose. The Bible, discipleship, expository preaching, prayer, and living the Spirit-filled life is being ignored for numbers, results, prestiage, money.
May we repent before a holy God and return to faithfully preaching the Word of God and the hard demands of true repentance. May we not continue on this down-grade.
Warning!.......2001-11-25
In Dining With the Devil, Guinness critiques the church-growth movement. This book is not intended to be a scholarly theological review; rather, he shares his thoughts and warnings to the churches of America as they are confronted with the issue of modernity.
Should the primary guidance of the church be internal or external? Should the church be formed by the Word or by the World? At what point does change become compromise? Should churches incorporate the managerial techniques of the business world? What are the logical ends of the church-growth movement?
Guinness addresses each of these questions, and I believe he answers them fairly. He doesn't say all church-growth is bad and the church should condemn it, nor does he say that all church-growth is good and the church should assume it. Rather, he warns his reader and gets him to think about each of these questions. What stand should we take on these issues? Read this book and find out for yourself.
REQUIRED READING.......2001-03-17
Guinness paints a very grim picture of the meagchurch's accoumadtions to modernity. In the face of rising hostility from mainstream culture nobody wants to face the fact that some of our greatest church "successes" are actually just as dangerous. This reality is not one Guinness relishes or is eager to report, but the story must be told. Very concise, well-written, well-researched, thoughtful. I wish every Christian in America could read thsi book. One of the ten most importnat things I have ever read.

Great book for those new to Greek food.......2007-09-22
I bought this cookbook after watching a segment on Digital Cookbook (www.digitalcookbook.tv) and my 7-year-old decided we needed to try making the almond macaroons. Most of the recipes are easy, and have basic ingredients, but I chose not to try procuring rose water for the macaroons...if you always wanted to try making flaming cheese at home, here's your cookbook!

A good basic introduction to the fundamentals of dollmaking, Creating & Crafting Dolls explains how to sew dolls from your own fabrics or make them from purchased blank bodies. Beginners and novices will learn how to utilize two easy patterns to construct simple but charming doll bodies, and how to adorn them with a variety of hairstyles, facial features, clothing, and accessories. (A number of patterns are included for the clothing and accessories.) Though a bit plain-looking--mostly text augmented with line drawings--the procedures are clearly explained and the book contains 14 full-color spreads showing photographs of many different versions of the basic dolls. Unlike other dollmaking books aimed at the art-doll audience, the results of the techniques covered in this book are dolls that can actually be played with by children.

Book Description
Impressed by the success of The Birth of a Nation, Robert Goldstein, owner of a well-known Los Angeles costume supply house, produced his own epic film drama, The Spirit of '76 and screened it in Los Angeles shortly after America's entry into World War I. The film was denounced as anti-British and treasonous, and Goldstein was arrested. This book documents the background to the film, and its making, his arrest, trial, and the repurcussions.
