Main character is great, the rest so-so.......2007-07-08
The title character of "Dalva" holds the book together, as a finely drawn, if rather unbelievable, woman who can be described by quite a lengthy string of adjectives, mostly positive. She would be an intriguing person to know, and I'm not thinking of her frequent, casual sex life, either. Harrison captures Dalva well at middle age, perhaps struggling with a fairly aimless direction and a fresh desire to find her son given up at birth. Those threads make for a decent novel.
The other characters were responsible for dragging Dalva down to an average score. The self-absorbed academic, Michael, was unappealing to me, even when he had some humorous mis-adventures. His connection with Dalva makes little sense. Michael's narrative forms the second of the three main sections, and adds little value. The other people have their moments of spark and insight, although none especially engaging.
The ancestor's journals about personal involvement with the Sioux and other key moments in the clash between the natives and the white man offered an enlightening view into that unfortunate time. However, I couldn't get into all of that, because at some point the journal entries don't add much to move the story forward, and almost read as extended asides.

I just started reading Jim Harrison's books in May and have not read three and am going onto my 4th book. He is a great writer. This is a good book that drew me in and made me feel the character was real. It is a very good read.
Farmland never looked so good!.......2006-07-22
How many people list Nebraska as a Must-See Vacationland? Read this book and you will. Harrison brings not only his characters but the Nebraska farmland to life. Suddenly, the Niobrara River valley is on my list of places to visit. Not unlike other Harrison novels, birds, animals, even spirits play significant roles in this elaborate, sweeping (like the Plains?) romance as Dalva seeks her child given up years ago for adoption and her own place in her family's rich heritage in this land. Harrison has created an illuminating and tragic love story on many levels.

I've found very relaxing this book and reading it I knew much more about the story of American Indians.
WaamPaam Woo Haa Koo Koo.......2004-05-20
A pretty good book and much bigger on the dog as friend than the hideous cat (who, by the way, is no where to be seen in this fine novel). This is a moving story covering something like three or four generations and told from several perspectives--a third generation (I think) 1/8th Sioux, a drunken professor, and back to the Sioux (Dalva). As is typical of the author, this novel is full of wisdom, beautiful writing, hardship, sorrow, and survival. I rather liked it--and loved the absence of any sentimentality (or puny-brained felines). I was a tad annoyed by the rank confusion found on page 319 as to whether or not JWN (a major character) was dealing with a Lt Col or simply a Lieutenant. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book and can recommend it.

Dancer Ink is a beautiful collection of photographs encompassing a wide range of dancers, photographers, settings and moods. What I liked about it was the theatrical and vivid look at these people told through pictures. There's not much else to be said. Whether you enjoy creative photography, or the interesting images dancers can lend to a picture, you will enjoy this book.

the characters are so typical and the plot is a chiche
i don't exactly remember where the too-sweet hero fell in love with the helpless heroine. the book was all about sex and i can't appreciate that. if you wanna read a REAL damsel in distress plot, read a knight in shining armor by jude deveraux. it was wonderful.

Elizabeth Lowell's Chain Lightning is one of her better series titles.
While the prose is definitely purple at times, she writes the
"steadfast heroine" better than most other romance authors.
By that, I mean those heroines who are quietly strong although they
initially come off as weak to their heroes. When her books work, one
of the reasons they do is when that "ahah" moment happens to
her heroes, when they realize that the heroine has actually been
incredibly brave in facing her demons.
That's exactly what happens
in Chain Lightning, a romance about Amanda Blythe and Damon Sutter.
Amanda's boss is also Damon's aunt, and she decides to throw the two
together on a three-week vacation on an island in Australia's Great
Barrier Reef. Great idea, if Amanda hadn't nearly drowned in the
plane crash that killed her bum of a husband and their unborn child.
Great idea, if Damon could handle a woman not as strong as
himself.
But thrown together these two are, and as the sexual
tension increases, so does Damon eventually learn the truth about the
seemingly waifish Amanda. His "ahah" moment is both
effective and affecting, and the relationship these two forge as a
result is very touching. As author Lowell tends to do, there's always
one more hurdle to jump before an HEA ending, and this one is one of
her most poignant endings - up there with the endings in Too Hot to
Handle and Love Song for a Raven.
Elizabeth Lowell is one of the few
authors I read who writes seemingly endless love scenes - her series
titles always seem to include one that goes on forever - but they
often work for her, conveying in actions what the characters are
unable to convey with words. Chain Lightning is no exception, and if
the reader can get past some of the corny dialogue (her heroes often
seem to have horrible nicknames for their heroines), there's a good
time to be had...
A warm book for a cold winter day.......2000-09-01
I've read this book twice, and though I lend most of my books to friends this is a keeper. Sent by a meddeling boss on a suprise vacation to Austrial our heroine finds herself facing her three biggest fears, Water, Planes, and Boats. Mandy is a woman most of us can relate too. She won't hide from her fears. Sutter is a man that has a hard time understanding her at first. But being a diplomate he has learned to study people, and by studing Mandy he learns that there is more to her than her sharp whit, and amber eyes. What he finds, he doesn't want to amit. Beside a few big goofs on the scuba diving sequences, this was a great fast read. Want to get away for a day, pick-up this book and go to Australia with Mandy and Sutter.
Another great novel for Lowell!.......2000-06-21
I really enjoyed reading this book. It packs a very fascinating story into a small amount of pages. The romance that blooms between the two main characters is RED HOT! You don't want to miss reading this one!

This is a truly 30 minute cookbook with wonderful recipes and colored photographs that will guide you, step by step in your preparation. Most of the recipes in the book have cook's tip inserts which are really useful. Unlike most 30 minute cookbooks, this book not only covers vegetarian dishes and salads but has many fish, shellfish and chicken dishes, as well as recipes for soups and deserts. Furthermore, almost all the dishes could be prepared with readily available or everyday ingredients. This is truly a cookbook for today's busy professionals.

If you are a serious cook who likes tasty and well presented dishes this cookbook by Jenni Fleetwood is a "must have."Each recipe is on a page or half page and is presented with a photographic display of just what your finished product should look like. And, the photography is well done and distinctly helpful. Step by step guide to preparation is offered for each recipe. Unlike many "quick" cookbooks this one lists ingredients that are easily obtainable at your local grocers and yet are not "instant" type foods. This is truly a gourmet cookbook for the gormand cook. May be the most useful book in my cookbook arsenal and I have hundreds of them. Most I never use but this one will be used on a regular basis.

My family and I share cooking responsibilities and time and time again we go to this cookbook for inspiration. We have tried probably half of the recipes and THEY HAVE ALL BEEN WINNERS!!! This book is excellent: the ingredient lists are short, the instructions are well-written and the photographs are BEAUTIFUL!!! With a well-stocked pantry of easy-to-find condiments and fresh food in the frig or freezer, you can find a recipe for tonight's dinner and make it in 30 minutes or less!!! NO KIDDING! We're ordering several more copies to give as gifts -- it'd be a great wedding gift or for the kids going off to college!

Great compact reference for an antiques dealer.......2007-03-23
This book was recommended to me by a dealer specializing in depression glass at a glass show, and I was not disappointed. Clear color photographs with company names, dates, color range, and prices listed in a small size book that is easy to tote around. My favorite part is the section on reproductions in the back of the book, not found in some of the other glass books I own! This is the second copy I have purchased (it comes out every two years) just to keep abreast of the reproductions, since it is sold at such a great price!

Excellent portable reference book!.......2003-05-23
This book has almost 200 different patterns of depression glass and price lists for them. The pictures are excellent and the size makes it perfect for throwing in a bag or backpack while browsing at flea markets or yard sales. The author, Gene Florence does refer to another of his books which is larger and more in depth if you need more info, but this is my first book on depression glass and I find it has what I need at this point. Of special note is his section on reproductions and how to spot them - very helpful. I highly recommend this book.

If you are interested in collecting depression glass or glass from the 40s, 50s and 60s, this is the guide you must own. Gene Florence is the most respected author in the field and has the book sales to prove it. The illustrations are great and the text is very basic -- it only gives you pricing information.
If you are beginner or are considering collecting depression/40s,50s,60s glass, you would do well to check out Florence's large hardbound books covering those topics. This pocket reference does not give you the background information you would need.

I recently started collecting depression glass. At the time, I realized how much I didn't know! This book has been my constant companion. The material is clearly presented. The photography is fantastic. The price guide along with the description of each piece of EVERY collection is invaluable. The author shares her experiences, mistakes, problems and solutions going room-by-room, starting with the foyer. The few photos show her lovely home, but are randomly placed throughout the book, not with the section on that room.
The focus is mostly on adding accessories though there is some advice on selecting and placing furniture. The ideas for each room are divided into romantic, adventurous, contemporary, traditional and serene.
Here are a few of the tips so you get a feel for it:
* Frame your favorite restaurant's menus to hang in the dining room.
* Buy simple white cotton pillows and handwrite your favorite sayings on them with a fabric pen.
* Place a small Oriental or prayer rug next to your tub for a unique bath mat.
You are bound to find some ideas you can use in the 142 page book, but it has the feel of an extended magazine article.
Lots of simple suggestions to add character to your home........1998-09-05
I am not the type to spend a lot of time pouring over decorating books, nor am I particulary "handy". When we recently purchased a small vacation rental, I found myself in need of nice, comfortable, affordable touches for each room. This book provided just the suggestions I needed: simple, feasible (both in effort and economics) and inventive.
I liked how chapters were devoted to a every area in the house - even the entry hall. Each room/chapter had a simple list of ideas broken down into catagories for traditional, creative or romantic decorating. I was able to flip to a chapter, skim the lists and find ideas that would work for me. Thank you Ms. Madden.

1 of the best books on Nirvana+the Seattle Scene. Must read........2000-11-23
Nirvana and the Seattle Sound is one of the most interesting books I've read about Nirvana and the Seattle music scene of the late 80s and early 90s. There is a lot of unrecorded information regarding Nirvana and thier early recording history, especially behind the scenes of the sessions prior to and including the Nevermind sessions. This book doesn't delve into Kurt's drug addiction, relationships, and eventual tragic death it stays focused clearly on the music from beginning to end and engrosses all the way through. The only book I've found on the Seattle scene that was more accurate and informative is LOSER. Check that out too.
good information, but outsider feel.......1999-05-09
this is a pretty good book. it has lots of information about Nirvana. it tells how they got started and what they experienced along the way. but it is told from an outsider's perspective; it's a biography written by someone that never met kurt or the other members. this is a good book if you want to know more about the grunge/ alt scene or some of the facts about nirvana, but don't expect much behind-the-scenes information.
