Book Description

A book by Spain's greatest living writer weaves fiction and fact into a completely original and unforgettable hybrid.

Called by its author a "false novel," Dark Back of Time begins with the tale of the odd effects of publishing All Souls, his witty and sardonic 1989 Oxford novel. All Souls is a book Marías swears to be fiction, but which its "characters"—the real-life dons and professors and bookshop owners who have "recognized themselves"—fiercely maintain to be a roman à clef. With the sleepy world of Oxford set into fretful motion by a world that never "existed," Dark Back of Time begins an odyssey into the nature of identity ("we do not know anyone entirely, not even ourselves") and of time. Marías weaves together autobiography (the brother who died as a child; the loss of his mother), a legendary kingdom, strange ghostly literary figures, halls of mirrors, a one-eyed pilot, a curse in Havana, and a bullet lost in Mexico. Dark Back of Time has been acclaimed here as "superb" (Review of Contemporary Fiction), "fantastically original" (Talk), "brilliant" (Virginia Quarterly Review), and "a rare gift" (The New York Times Book Review). "In the best manner of Borges," The Hudson Review commented that this hybrid is "lush and mysterious."

5 out of 5 stars Just trying to even out the average........2001-10-04

I'm not into writing amateur reviews for books I care about, but I feel duty-bound to help this one's average star rating. Maria's novel deserves more than the two stars the reader below gave it. After all, it's a fantastic and complex book--difficult to slog through at times, but that's what makes it fun. And New Directions (the best and most adventurous publisher around) ought to be thanked for taking Marias to the States. It's a shame the bigger houses tend to poach its writers.

2 out of 5 stars A disappointing self-indulgence from a true master.......2001-07-02

As a long-time admirer of Javier Marias, I was very disappointed by this latest novel. Aside from a few bright moments here and there, this book is a self-indulgent dissertation about a series of utterly obscure British authors who, from the sounds of it, are deservedly so.

I, for one, found the whole John Gawsworth/Redonda business rather dull even in All Souls. But to have a significant part of a second book devoted to a rehash of the matter is too much of a bad thing.

There is decidedly little of the usual Marias spark and wit in this book. Forget all the hype about novels within novels. It is a bizarre and largely unpalatable salad of autobiographical notes, mostly superficial, and various pointless meanderings about minor British eccentrics.

It is a great pity. Perhaps he has won too many awards or had too much attention, at least on the European side of the Atlantic. Marias is a considerable talent, without a doubt one of the world's greatest living authors, but you wouldn't know it from this book. Read A Heart So White and discover the sheer genius he is capable of.

3 out of 5 stars Quick and Cute, but little substance!.......2001-01-20

Three women meet for their class reunion. Though not friends during their college years, they get together to discuss what happened in the first weeks and months after college graduation. In doing so they reveal how their lives have turned out to be nothing what their class mates had expected. EAch woman tells her story, none of them quite turning out as expected. But the epilouge explains it all and pulls it all together. Though they were cute stories, there was very little substance to require the amount of pages it took to write the book. Some of the fluff could have been taken out and reduced the book in half.

      3 out of 5 stars A mediocre Macomber.......1999-10-22

This one just doesn't do it. All three stories are excellent in themselves. However, the set-up of the books ruins each plot. The reader must wait until then end of the book to find out what happens to each character, and it is more frustrating than suspenseful. I recommend having someone who read this book tell you which page to jump to after you read each short story.

      3 out of 5 stars One of the 2 MacOmber books I didn't like...........1999-10-05

.... and I've read over forty. She's usually lovely but this was well... incomplete feeling. I never felt sweetly enveloped in any of the stories, which is something D Macomber usually does very well.

3 out of 5 stars too rushed in parts.......1998-05-14

i was over all pleased with the book ,gretchen was way too long and carol was shorter but by the time we got to maggie it was like whoosh...i felt that instead these women would have been better if maybe they were written in a mini series type thing instead of one book because you really wish for more development of all characters and left with the feeling of a great ending but kinda quick....

3 out of 5 stars Not so Hot.......1997-08-17

While I usually love anything written by Macomber, I must say this book needed much more revision before it was published. The three women who share their stories of what happened after college are believable, and the plot lines are also good, but the events bridging them all together, some of the situations and much of the dialogue TELLS rather than SHOWS. Debbie can do better than this

A brothel keeper's sons discuss genocide and plot murder; a young alien wanderer is pursued by his shadow double; and a political prisoner tries to prove his identity, not least to himself. Gene Wolfe's first novel consists of three linked sections, all of them elegant broodings on identity, sameness, and strangeness, and all of them set on the vividly evoked colony worlds of Ste. Croix and Ste. Anne, twin planets delicately poised in mutual orbit.

Marsch, the victim in the third story, is the apparent author of the second and a casual visitor whose naïve questions precipitate tragedy in the first. The sections dance around one another like the planets of their settings. Clones, downloaded personalities inhabiting robots, aliens that perhaps mimicked humans so successfully that they forgot who they were, a French culture adopted by its ruthless oppressors--there are lots of ways to lose yourself, and perhaps the worst is to think that freedom consists of owning other people, that identity is won at the expense of others.

It is easy to be impressed by the intellectual games of Wolfe's stunning book and forget that he is, and always has been, the most intensely moral of SF writers. --Roz Kaveney, Amazon.co.uk

          Book Description

Back in print for the first time in more than a decade, Gene Wolfe's The Fifth Head of Cerberus is a universally acknowledged masterpiece of science fiction by one of the field's most brilliant writers.Far out from Earth, two sister planets, Saint Anne and Saint Croix, circle each other in an eternal dance. It is said a race of shapeshifters once lived here, only to perish when men came. But one man believes they can still be found, somewhere in the back of the beyond. In The Fifth Head of Cerberus, Wolfe skillfully interweaves three bizarre tales to create a mesmerizing pattern: the harrowing account of the son of a mad genius who discovers his hideous heritage; a young man's mythic dreamquest for his darker half; the bizarre chronicle of a scientists' nightmarish imprisonment. Like an intricate, braided knot, the pattern at last unfolds to reveal astonishing truths about this strange and savage alien landscape.

This, as the title suggests, is not one novel, but three novellas, and
they are not all directly related. In the first, a story is set on an
odd planet. Where are the colonists? Who are the colonists? Have the
resident aliens become the colonists, being shapeshifters. The others
may not be as interesting, but are equally odd and may have something
          in common thematically.

5 out of 5 stars greatest living writer?.......2007-07-20

I'm not a huge sci-fi fan so I wasn't sure I would like this one. I finished it in awe, thinking this might be the greatest living author, and a relative unknown, in the back-waters of sci-fi. The book is atmospherically sinister, intricate and complex with an unreliable narrator. Rereading helps, but it's not like a Rubik's cube, complicated with one solution. You can narrow it down to several possible alternatives, but that is all.

What I found equally fascinating is how some on the Net interpret this novel. They take the theme of "shape shifting" too seriously, in a sci-fi sense -- i.e. people who can really imitate any human form they like. The novel leads you down this path, but you do not have to read the "shape shifting" this way. It might be simply a myth the conquering people have of the "natives", who are now lost, but once had "magic" powers. Again, sci-fi markers can be unreliable as well.

I tried other books by Wolfe, but they were too slow or dark, and short stories are not his best format. But this guy is a master, in or out of sci-fi. But cerebral, definitely.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best novels I've ever read.......2007-04-09

This is an amazing multi-layered work, so rich and complex that it rewards multiple re-readings. I pretty much believe that careful reading of this book will make you more intelligent. I've recommended it to dozens of people since I first read it. I feel kind of sorry for those who didn't enjoy it-to me, it would be a bit like being color-blind.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome literary achievement of enigmatic narrative and original plot.......2006-03-27

THE FIFTH HEAD OF CERBERUS, Gene Wolfe's first book-length work of note, is a collection of three seemingly unrelated novellas that are, at the close of the third, shown to be cunningly interlinked. The first novella, "The Fifth Head of Cerberus", was published in one of Damon Knight's Orbit anthologies in 1974, while the latter two were written and published together to expand the themes and plot of the first. The setting of it all is Sainte Anne and Saint Croix, two sister planets revolving around a common center of gravity in a far-away solar system, colonized first by Frenchmen and later occupied (in a brutal fashion, it is hinted) by later waves of English-speaking colonists. Before men arrived, legend goes, Sainte Anne was inhabited by an indigenous race of shapeshifters, which humans wiped out. Or did the aboriginals wipe out the colonists, imitating them so faithfully that they forgot their own origins? The novellas touch upon many themes of post-colonial theory.

In the first novella, a young man grows up in a strangely sheltered environment on Saint Croix, discovering at last the secrets of his scientist father's work. Here, the aboriginal inhabitants of the sister planet are only briefly mentioned, but the plot has much more local concerns. The second novella "'A Story' by John V. Marsch" is inevitably confusing to first-time readers, and initially seems unrelated to the first. It is the story of an adolescent's initiation to manhood in a primitive society, a dreamquest that brings him across a bizarre landscape and introducing him to various tribes espousing peculiar religious beliefs. In the third novella, "V.R.T." a bureaucrat on Saint Croix goes over the diaries of an imprisoned anthropologist. Again, it seems a complete change of direction with little to link it to the first two, but by the end a story arc spanning the three novellas is revealed. THE FIFTH HEAD OF CERBERUS is an excellent example of Wolfe's love for mysteries, some revealed so casually the reader might easily miss it, and others so deeply buried that it may take several tries for the author to find the key. This all gives the book excellent re-read value. And here one can see the genesis of the techniques that Wolfe used in later works, such as his masterpiece The Book of the New Sun.

The narrative here is so ingeniously constructed that I would recommend THE FIFTH HEAD OF CERBERUS to any lover of literature, even those that are usually wary of anything called science-fiction. Wolfe's novel PEACE, published a year later, continues this strong writing and is also highly recommend, and its plot might be attractive to a more general audience.

If you have visited Hawaii at all, you know that you will find any one of these chef's restaurants on every major island in the state. They have also been featured on HGTV, and TLC's cooking shows, as well as some of their own local shows. This cookbook showcases some of their most popular recipes, and they really aren't that difficult to follow. A lot of the ingredients may be harder to find, the further east you go in the states. (tropical fruits, etc.) But if you really want the true taste of Hawaii, you'll try these recipes!!

2 out of 5 stars Really an Advanced book..........2007-07-30

I picked up this book used and was disappointed that most of the projects were quite advanced. Since I don't yet have the skills to put together massive pieced projects and didn't like the look of the beginning stuff in this book I'll shelve it until I become more experienced. If you are an advanced paper-piecer there are some lovely projects in this one. If you are a beginner or intermediate piecer I would recommend you purchase a Sew Precises CD. You get the patterns on cd and can print them on your computer. Much simpler than making photocopies form a book.

                  2 stars.

carol doak provides the best printed beginning directions for paper piecing. especially her book on miniatures. it is accompanied by an optional package of preprinted foundations. she even explains the cutting guestimates best by giving you all the cutting recipes for the quilts in that book

                  4 out of 5 stars A good book.......1999-07-25

There is step-by-step instructions with photos that takes the beginner to more advanced concepts. This is a good book.

                  1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed.......1999-07-10

This was my first book on paper piecing. Therefore, I needed to understand the method of doing this in an easy format. I felt that this was not accomplished in the writing. I also had someone try to interpret the directions and they were also unable to do so. Luckily I found on the internet simple instructions on doing this method and now enjoy it. I don't recommend this book, if you want to learn how to do this for this first time.

                  Book Description

Yankee Magazine's Vinegar, Duct Tape, Milk Jugs & More

From milk jugs to egg cartons to mayonniase and more, your home contains an untapped gold mine of materials that you can use to solve problems, fix what breaks, or create substitutes for things you'd otherwise have to buy. The trick is figuring out what among these objects is treasure and what's trash. That's where Earl Proulx and the editors of Yankee magazine can help.

Drawing on their own creative ideas--and those of ingenious Yankees all over New England--they've come up with more than 1,000 clever ways to put common household objects to uncommon and valuable uses. The result is a book that will benefit you in five clear ways.

                  1. This book will empower you.
Other people might be stymied when, say, Spot knocks a glass of grape juice on that elegant white rug. Not you. You'll be able to lift that stain yourself--without buying some expensive remover--just by applying a dab of shaving cream. Vinegar, Duct Tape, Milk Jugs, and More contains dozens of clever do-it-yourself ideas like this.

                  2. This book will save you money.
Need an attractive gift for a friend, a game to entertain the grandkids, a desk organizer for your home office? Forget the catalogs and stay away from the stores. As you'll see, you can make these items and dozens more in minutes from the leftover things around your house.

                  3. This book will make your life easier.
There's no need to stock a cabinetful of specialty cleansers. Vinegar, Duct Tape, Milk Jugs, and More will show you how to use common ingredients like salt, ketchup, baking soda, flour, yogurt, and, of course, vinegar to handle many of the cleaning tasks you encounter every day.

                  4. This book will reduce the waste in your home.
If you've ever regretted the amount of trash you throw out each week, here's the solution. This book will show you how to give a second life to everything from plastic containers to bubble wrap to panty house and more.

                  5. This book will entertain you.
Whether you settle on one of Earl's yarns, the story behind common objects like Post-It Notes and condensed milk, or the "My Way" tips from actual readers, you're bound to enjoy the fun side of this book.

Vinegar, Duct Tape, Milk Jugs, and More provides no-fail ideas for every area of your home, and for many actitivites, from gardening to cooking, from travel to sports, and from crafts to games. Consider it your no-cost tool kit for all your needs around the home.

Throw out a candle stub, some sour milk, that leftover bag of cat litter? Not on your life!

You might think of these things as waste that's headed for the trash can, but there are hundreds of practical ways you can save money, time, and natural resources by reusing these and other common objects around your house. Follow Earl Proulx and the editors of Yankee magazine as they show you how to:

Make a soothing facial mask from cat litter

Cover up furniture scratches with a dab of iodine

Tun an old teacup, a sandwich bag, and some sugar into an elegant pin cushion

Clean car grease off your hands with olive oil

Unstick a window with the stub of an old candlestick

Clear a clogged showerhead with vinegar

Ant-proof your home with lemon juice

Make an attractive country picture frame from an old six-pane window

End static cling with hair spray

Stop foot blisters with duct tape

Keep bait worms fresh with coffee grounds

Make an earring holder out of window screening

More than 1,000 creative, fun, and ingenious tips

                  5 out of 5 stars VERY useful!.......2003-07-29

This book is divided into about fourteen sections and deals with many different parts of the home. Like the book LIVING WELL ON A SHOESTRING, it puts strong emphasis on saving money. But this book puts more emphasis on recycling common objects around the house and using them in a plethora of ways.

His office suggestions are worth the price of the whole book! He suggests using a current glossy calendar for a mouse pad for the computer, using extra envelopes that come with greeting cards as storage for computer disks in file folders -- and show you how to specially cut them for the purpose. He suggests using a dish rack for temporary sorting of file folders. And get this -- for car enthusiasts, he suggests using a clean distributor cap as a pen and pencil holder and conversation piece!

This book is a smorgasbord of great ideas for every part of the home. If you put these ideas to use, you'll get back the price of the bok many times!

With his trademark folksy wisdom, Earl Proulx tells you how to recycle those things we all have lying around the house into ingenious household solutions without spending money on fancy cleaning products or pricey gadgets. Some of Earl's particular favorites are cat litter (as a cleaner for oil spills and as a base for a soothing facial mask) and, of course, vinegar (to clean just about anything, unclog showerheads, as well as trap fruit pests), duct tape (as both tick remover and a protection against blisters), and milk jugs (bird feeders and clothespin holders). His fun and inventive ideas also include: lAnt-proof your home with lemon juice lCover up furniture scratches with a dab of iodine lUse powdered milk to soothe sunburn and remove makeup lMake an earring holder out of window screen lRecycle bubble wrap for a toilet tank insulator Organized by location inside and outside of the house, this essential compendium will make you pause each time you start to throw something (old blue jeans, ice cube trays, coat hangers, egg cartons) out in the trash.

                      Book Description

Every page is memorable, every image unforgettable, every moment meaningful. Take a tour of the entire twentieth century through the more than 500 of the most outstanding magazine covers from around the world--Look, Life, Der Spiegel, and Paris Match among them. Each one stands witness to an era when magazines kept headlines to a minimum, allowing the pictures to speak for themselves. From political figures to fashion to movie stars, from depictions of daily life, 100 years of imaginative and thought-provoking design unfolds. Such titles as Esquire, Harper's Bazaar, and Vogue set the styles with the greatest artists; Andy Warhol's Interview later showcased cutting-edge art direction and images from photographers, such as Francesco Scavullo. Here, too, are refined, witty, and often satiric drawings from The New Yorker and Norman Rockwell's nostalgic paintings from The Saturday Evening Post. See how journals throughout the world portrayed a monster (Adolf Hitler), key heads of state (Khruschev, De Gaulle, Kennedy), two world wars, the Beatles and Vietnam, and royal weddings (Princess Grace, Princess Di). From Punch and Playboy to Time and Jours de France, it's an amazing, sometimes joyful and sometimes sober, look at life in the last century.

I have read reviews of this book in the media suggesting it is a history of the twentieth century through magazine covers. I don't see it like that, rather a visual history in two chapters, of twenty-eight leading consumer magazines from Europe and the USA. The first chapter covers the twenty-eight titles with a good choice of covers and text explaining the history of each one. Playboy and Esquire mix it with Fortune (eleven super designed covers) Stern and Punch for instance.

The second chapter called Trends is the one that I think readers will find the most interesting. It looks at styles and techniques of cover design and finally at people on the front page. Some of these covers could be considered historical as they feature politicians like Churchill, Stalin, Hitler and Charles De Gaulle, or celebrities like Marlene Dietrich, Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe (shown on a spread with forty-eight) or Sophia Loren.

Magazine folk will enjoy this well designed book because of all the covers. I can recommend another book, 'Cover Story' (ISBN 0811808165) which has two hundred American titles from 1900 to 1950 in a beautifully designed paperback. Perhaps the definitive book on the subject is the sumptuous 'Great Magazine Covers of the World' by Patricia Frantz Kery, out of print but worth looking for because it has five hundred covers from twenty countries, in a word, stunning.

                          Book Description

Attempting to compile the first complete catalog of the entertainers who appeared on film in Great Britain from the invention of cinema in the mid-1890s to the present, this innovative reference book covers more than 2,000 entertainers including: comedians, singers, musicians, impressionists, dancers and dance bands, contortionists, acrobats, pop groups and pop stars, and more. Listed here are the complete filmographies for bygone entertainers such as Max Miller, and Tommy Trinder; music-hall artists, including Marie Lloyd and Harry Champion; radio stars such as Richard Murdoch and Norman Long; crooners from Al Bowlly to Donald Peers; and a supporting cast of many more. Each entry gives the entertainer's speciality, a chronological listing of his/her films, and the titles of the songs sung, played, or danced to. Uniquely, the catalog lists appearances in shorts, especially series of shorts, such as Ace Cinemagazine, Eve's Film Review, and Pathe Pictorial, as well as other prewar series of "cinemags." Newsreel performances are also included. Based on more than 30 years research by the man dubbed "custodian of the nation's nostalgia" (The Sunday Times, London), this is a unique and comprehensive guide for all researchers concerned with the history of British film.
