12XU???????.......2005-12-19
This book is filled with alot of truth and raw human emotion. I love Hank's writing style...He 'gets it' and not alot of people do. I related to so many things he wrote about....'The Iron' I was moved by his honesty and how he revealed himself. I recommend anyone read this book, Henry is a truely evolved individual that has experienced life in the true sense and lived to share it with anyone brave enough to open themselves to the real world....Thank you Henry.....
Excellent time killer.......2002-09-29
I generally enjoy Hank's essays on rock contemporaries and/or elder statesmen of whatever genre he sets his sights on, and while I had actually read many of these collected articles (from Details, RayGun, Vox, etc.) beforehand, I found re-reading them quite enjoyable anyway.
His diatribe on David Lee Roth is worth the price of the book alone, but his Lollapalooza Tour Journal is also of interest. An in-depth look at Jerry Lee Lewis, a sparse (but fun) interview with John Lee Hooker, and a superb chapter on Phil Lynott are only a few of the gems within.
Vol.3 of the BCB series is also good, but offers less of interest about the music industry.
Do I Come Here Often: Black Coffee Blues Pt. 2.......2001-07-16
This was an amazing book, I could not put it down. I finished reading it within a day. Henry is a fantastic writer and he shares so much of himself in his writing. I feel like I know him. Some parts of the book are a little sad but then you start to realize that is just how Henry's writing is. When you finish reading this book you will feel like you just borrowed Henry's personal journal to read. I highly recommend this to any Rollins fan!! ~~Niki
Whatever man.......2000-10-25
Interesting book by an intriguing man. OK, Henry is not a college professor, he does not write in a style in this book which is wordy or hard to get. He's going for something else, if more people had his edge this world would be a hell of a lot more interesting. Why people don't get excited about him or his band is saddening because people like Eminen, a real whining Yank if there was one, are vicious bastards who ought to get some brains. PS. Whatever man.
do i come here often:black coffee blues.......2000-04-19
Henry is no great writer nor does he try to be. This has to be one of his better books...less of the whining and more of the anecdotes and some great interviews. If he lost the whining yank routine, he might pick up a few new fans.

Charming Mystery with too many Breaks.......2007-08-07
Do you recall the friend that can make even the most exciting events seem dull by including too many unimportant details? That is how I would classify the beginning of this book. The mystery was good and I found the book to be charming as a whole. However, the first third of the book included a lot of breaks for a description of the various histories of tea, the museum, the family that founded the museum, etc.
In general, I love history and I appreciate books that incorporate history into the story. This book failed to make the historical passages flow along with the story. My guess would be that one of the authors wrote the mystery while the other author wrote the history behind the book. The beginning of the book was choppy as a result. Just as I started to get into the story there would be a break for several paragraphs that read like a history textbook. I probably would have found the information interesting if it had fit better within the story.
I did enjoy the mystery. I found it to be engaging and it kept my interest to the end of the book. The story was charming and fun. The authors obviously put a lot of effort into research and development for this book. It was worth reading but I wouldn't add it to my personal library. It does not make my list of books to read again but I did not feel that I wasted my time by reading it. Overall, once I got past all the descriptions I enjoyed the book and was satisfied by the ending.
Dead as a Scone.......2007-06-08
What can I say, I love this series. I finally found authors that write clean, cozy mysteries. And to top it off they are hard to put down. I especially like the two lead characters, Nigel and Flick. The setting is quaint, although I found it a little difficult to think a "tea museum" would be all that interesting, the plot is the key. It's both intertaining and hard to figure out the ending. For anyone who likes mysteries that keep you guessing while sipping a cuppa by a nice warm fire - this book is for you. Happy reading!
What does this book title mean?.......2007-01-05
Since a scone is not technically a living thing, how can someone or something be dead as one? I'm afraid my take on this book matches my take on the title. I didn't like it.
Now, before everyone jumps down my throat because I am writing a negative review please remember that all literature does not appeal to all people. I just happen to not enjoy this particular book. I found it to be dull, uninteresting and to have a major character (Nigel Owen) who was a true pain in the keester. I've never run across a main player in a cozy mystery novel before who was presented in such a self-serving, conceited, unsympathetic manner. The authors really never gave me any reason to like him even the tiniest bit. Flick Adams was a nice person and seemed to be on the road to solving what she knew was a murder but then she just bogged down and all we heard about was the Royal Tunbridge Wells Tea Museum. (Could the authors not have shortened that name after repeating it the first fifty times? Would we as readers not have twigged to the fact that it was the Royal Tunbridge Wells Tea Museum if they had just referred to it as the museum, or the tea museum?) And what was accomplished with their habit of making lists of things? When describing pieces of Tunbridge Ware they list 14 different items made in this manner. When Flick cleared out Elspeth's desk after her death they listed 18 items in the desk. Why? None of them in either case was relevant to solving the case. And the way the historical aspects of the museum (pardon me, the Royal Tunbridge Wells Tea Museum) were added to the novel just made me groan. There might as well have been a symbol to denote: dull historical information upcoming! Please, work the information into the story in a more natural way so that I absorbe it almost without noticing I'm being fed information. Paragraph after paragraph was just relating facts in a very uninteresting way. It felt artificial, contrived. It did not flow naturally within the narrative. (I can't write it but I sure can recognize it when it is done well!)
I did not know that the book was supposed to have any significance from the Christian reader point of view. It certainly did not come across in that way at all. The only way I even knew about it was from reading reviews here on Amazon. Don't let that put you off if you don't want to get involved in Christian specific literature. It did not signify.
I know, I know, you all loved it. Well, maybe someone else will agree with me. It wasn't worth spending money for but if you can get it from the library, give it a go. If a friend of mine asked to borrow this book, I would gladly lend it but never want to get it back. I still can't figure out what a dead scone is.
Perfect with a Cup of Tea.......2006-03-26
For Nigel Owen, the year has not been going well. After loosing a great job in London, the only job he could get was as acting director of the Royal Tunbridge Wells Tea Museum. Still, this confirmed coffee drinker is determined to make the best of it and move back into his old circles as soon as he can.
Flick Adams, meanwhile, is thrilled to be working for the museum. The American transplant loves tea and finds her job as chief curator to be a real joy.
Both their lives are shaken when Dame Elspeth Hawker, board member and relative of the museum's founder, dies in the middle of a board meeting. Her doctor wants to write it off as natural causes, a reasonable assumption for an 84 year old. But Flick recognizes signs of poisoning and insists it was murder. Nigel knew there was something on Elspeth's mind that day. Could it be the reason she was killed?
Meanwhile, Elspeth's death puts the museum's future in jeopardy since many of the items in the museum were on loan from her family, and the heirs want to sell them. Can the museum come up with a way to keep their collection?
I love a good cozy and thought that a mystery set around tea in a small English village would be a perfect fit for me. I was right. Royal Tunbridge Wells is a charming place populated with endearing characters. It was a blast spending time with them. The book was so well written that time and the pages flew by, and it was always difficult putting the book down.
The story is told in equal parts from Nigel and Flick's points of view. This allows us to get to know them both equally and also provides different insight into the story. Each has their own straights and weaknesses, and this makes their scenes stand out all the more.
The pacing of the story is a little uneven. While Flick calls it murder right away, it's a long time before anyone else thinks it is. This makes for a beginning that's a little slower then I would have liked. The writing style, characters, and the museum collection sub-plot help keep things interesting, however.
One curiosity - the book is marketed as a Christian mystery. While there are a couple Christian characters and a Bible verse provides a clue, the majority of the characters, including Nigel and Flick, aren't Christians. Frankly, this didn't bother me either way and think it is worth noting only in passing. I think this might change as the series progresses, however.
I enjoyed this series debut and plan to spend more time with Nigel, Flick, and their charming tea museum.
A wonderful book!.......2006-01-30
I just adored this book! It makes me appreciate tea and England and God. The characters are so life-like and full of depth. Definitely a book to savor with a good cup of tea (chai for me!).

Book Description
This is the era of Luke Skywalker’s legacy: the Jedi Master has unified the order into a cohesive group of powerful Jedi Knights. But as the new era begins, planetary interests threaten to disrupt this time of relative peace, and Luke is plagued with visions of an approaching darkness. Evil is rising again–out of the best intentions–and it looks as if the legacy of the Skywalkers may come full circle. Honor and duty will collide with friendship and blood ties as the Skywalker and Solo clans find themselves on opposing sides of an explosive conflict with potentially devastating repercussions for both families, for the Jedi order, and for the entire galaxy.
When a mission to uncover an illegal missile factory on the planet Adumar ends in a violent ambush–from which Jedi Knight Jacen Solo and his protégé and cousin, Ben Skywalker, narrowly escape with their lives–it’s the most alarming evidence yet that sparks of political unrest are threatening to ignite into total rebellion. The governments of numerous worlds are chafing under the strict regulations of the Galactic Alliance, and diplomatic efforts to enforce compliance are failing. Fearing the worst, the Alliance readies a preemptive display of military might in a bid to bring the rogue worlds in line before an uprising erupts. The designated target of this exercise: planet Corellia–renowned for the brash independence and renegade spirit that have made its favorite son, Han Solo, a legend.
Something of a rogue himself, Jacen is nevertheless duty bound as a Jedi to stand with his uncle, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, on the side of the Galactic Alliance. But when the wary Corellians launch a counterstrike, the Alliance’s show of force–and a secret mission to disable Corellia’s crucial Centerpoint Station–give way to an armed skirmish. Once the smoke clears, the battle lines are drawn. Now the specter of full-scale war looms between a growing cadre of defiant planets and the Galactic Alliance that some fear is becoming a new Empire. And even as both sides struggle to find a diplomatic solution, mysterious acts of treachery and sabotage threaten peace efforts at every turn.
Determined to root out those behind the mayhem, Jacen follows a trail of cryptic clues to a dark rendezvous with the most shocking of revelations . . . while Luke grapples with something even more troubling: dream visions of a shadowy figure whose Force power and ruthlessness remind him of Darth Vader–a lethal enemy who strikes like a dark spirit on a mission of doom. An agent of evil who, if Luke’s visions come to pass, will bring untold pain to the Jedi Master . . . and to the entire galaxy.
Customer Reviews:
It was better then I thought.......2007-09-12
So I did something I swore I never would do I brought another Star Wars book. It was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. It is in fact a lot more interesting then the vast majority of what passes for Timothy Zhan these days.
So basically the plot is as follows Corellia is on the verge of rebellion due in large part to one of my favorite bit characters Thraken Sal-Solo it is up to the Solos and the Skywalker's to make things right. Only this time a rift will develop between the two.
After a rough first third of the book a strong story develops with cameo appearances from Admiral Pellion, Wedge Zeek and a few others. The real standouts are Jacen Solo and how he starts to develop as a character and Ben Skywalker who is an interesting mix of the character triats of Anakin and Jacen at that age. There are even some interesting revelations that there were a few siths who were really not all that bad. This in turn begs the question; is this really truth or misinformation to set a particular character on a dark path?
Overall-An interesting beginning I hope the quality remains consistent.
Great Read.......2007-09-04
I have neverread any of the Star Wars series before and this is great. I can't wait until the next book cones out. Star Wars fan or not there is drama and intrique in this series I would recommend to anyone who loves to read.
A Betrayal of the Force.......2007-08-20
I enjoyed the writing style in this book. The imagery and descriptions are wonderful, and I did not have the least bit of trouble understanding the action sequences (Though this may be due to the fact that I have read almost every Star Wars book in existence). Within the enclosed world of this book, and possibly the rest of the series, the actions of the characters make perfect sense, and Aaron Allston has done a tremendous job of keeping the characters true to themselves. The flaw in this book is that it is not an enclosed world. The author owes it to previous authors to read their works and write with the intention of staying true to the previously developed stories. The simplifications introduced to our understanding of the Force are the most disappointing facet of the book. For most of the book, the author seems to be enriching our understanding of the Force. When it really counts, though, his understanding of the Force seems to be one of childlike simplicity, a distinct division between dark and light. I was very disheartened. The book is good as a stand-alone novel, but I felt that it flopped as part of the overall saga.
Polished Beginning to a Promising Series.......2007-07-29
I loved this book. I thought the quality of the prose was outstanding, especially compared to other SW books I have read (I am currently reading Kevin J. Anderson's Jedi Academy Trilogy, and it doesn't even come close). I read SW almost exclusively for the Force and the Jedi, and that's the main focus here. The exploration of Jacen's character and motivations is excellent. I especially like the way Allston makes Jacen's fall seem believable. He truly wants to help the galaxy, and Lumiya's temptations are incredibly strong; I even felt myself leaning to the Sith side while reading it! Since Jacen probably knows more than anyone about the Force after his 5-year exploration of various Force traditions, it is completely understandable why he would come to view Luke's light-side purity as simplistic and limiting. The final confrontation between Nelani, Jacen, and Lumiya is without question the best part of the book, as it has a lot to say about competing philosophies of the Force (it's also a good indication of where the series is headed). There's also some truly witty dialogue throughout the book, including one hilarious exchange between Luke and Han regarding "the man who doesn't exist."
Overall, highly recommended.
Good launching of the series.......2007-07-28
Is not easy to think of another great epic series from Star Wars after the huge Yuuzhan Vong war. I always though that nothing worst than that war could happen to our heroes. Still, a new series began and I jumped to read it and even though is a bit tiring to read so many new battles again ( I don't know why the galactic battles are hard to imagine and make me tired) I enjoyed this book and I am hooked to now book 2.
I recommend to read this one if you are a Star Wars fan!!!

Great Audio.......2007-08-05
WOW! This whole series is great to listen to. Marc Thompson does an excellent narration, and his impressions of Han and Luke are dead on!
Great start for a new saga.......2006-07-20
This book has it all. Action, suspense, drama, foreshadowing of events that you know are going to happen but hope the whole way through that they don't. If the rest of the books in this series can keep up with the pace and plot of this one it will be another hit saga for Star Wars.
Well that was depressing........2006-06-19
WHOA THERE. UH UM.. OK. Stutter, Gulp & Yuk. The only thoughts I have about this book would be massive spoilers. If you loved Star By Star you'll love this. In Dark Empire, Leia saved Luke from the dark side, so it can happen. But I fear history may repeat itself and balance is about to be restored.. again. This is not why I read Star Wars novels.
Quoting Robert Mc Adams - It is rather depressing how the Star Wars universe is being portrayed right now, and frankly, if this series continues on the arc it is going -- it will have killed the universe I have loved to read about for so long -- leaving me with no reason to continue reading about it.
Hope or Hopeless - We will have to see where they take this story arc. We have the makings of a new three way rebellion.
Aaron Allston - there is little of the sense of humor well got in previous Allston Books.
Audio Book - The switch to 6 hour abridgments is great. The overall production is excellent.

Onolicious.......2007-04-01
Thank you again Aunty Jean :-)...My friends here in nyc loved your butter mochi that I made. You instructions may seem a little too simplified for some, but that's how local style cooking usually is...SIMPLE :-). Things don't need to be complicated to taste Onolicious...Just wish you had pickled mango in here :-(.
Best Dessert Cookbook Ever.......2007-01-19
I wanted to bring some of the Hawaiian flavor home to New Mexico, so I started cooking one recipe per week from this book. So far, everything has been a resounding success for my family of men. Don't be put off by some oddball ingredients, just try it! Vinegar and coffee in a chocolate cake? Rice Krispies in another cake? You will be pleased with the results. These recipes are easy and fun. One word of caution: ingredients such as fresh mango and papaya, coconut milk, and mochiko can be hard to obtain in some states. But plenty of the recipes use easily available items. I'll never order a grocery store cake again!
Great local desserts!.......2003-03-13
Don't be apprehensive because you can't see the cover! This book is full of delicious results that are ultimately simple. A few recipes include store bought packaged products such as cake or brownie mix, but the majority of recipes are based on "from scratch" recipes that have been passed along and shared between close family and friends through generations in Hawai'i. If you've lived in Hawaii or have visited Hawai'i and long for the desserts you so easily remember, this book is a must. Recipes like Pineapple Delight (ready in under half an hour) and Pumpkin Crunch (you HAVE to try this one!) are extremely delicious - having made both with excellent results and ease of preparation. The Hawaiian Jell-o Dessert also got rave reviews from family and friends and is very delicious with a macadamia shortbread crust and 'secret' cream cheese layer (it's mixed with black cherry jell-o and heavy cream) topped off with a layer of lime jell-o. While these desserts are very tempting and easy to make, I couldn't give a five star rating because the recipe listed "2 loaf pans" for the recipe and did not indicate that it was necessary to use 9 in. loaf pans or else you would end up with leftover cream cheese and jell-o. Other than that, this is the book I bake from most often. Some recipes might seem a bit exotic, such as Okinawan Sweet Potato pie with Haupia Topping, Coconut Custard Mochi, or Macadamia Cream Pie, but I'm fairly sure you should be able to find all ingredients at your local grocer. There are four pages of color photographs.

Many tasty local favorites...if only she had pickled mango :-). I make the oyako donburi often as well as furikaki fish (yummy with salmon).
Being away from home and in NYC makes this book priceless for me. No local potlucks, plate lunches, or okazu deli food here, I gotta make my own "ono" food...thank goodness for this book!
Mahalo for sharing Aunty Jean!

a breath of fresh air.......2003-07-06
As an artist who loves to paint and cook, this book really captures everything that i possible would love to take me to the south of france. Its beautiful colaboration of matisse paintings and tastes of recipes, really inspires one to want to paint a colourful table for dining. The recipes aren't exactly the normal cuisine you would desire to serve everyday however the colours and textures of foods play with those in his decorative work. Its just quite an inspirational book for those who love to master a composition like matisse did - my husband bought this book for me just because he knew i love matisse and i love to cook. Its a colourful book which you want to pick up and flip through just to take you to another place another time affecting all your senses and memories. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent !! Couldn't put it Down........2004-01-17
I'm a big Dillard and Andy Griffith Fan.
This book provided information I other wise would have not have access to. I have read everything I could find on the group, but It never told the whole story and left me longing for more.
Lee filled that hole. Nicely laid out, kept a smooth timeline, plenty of
funny stories.
I recommend this book to anyone.
On top of that Lee is a fine person to do business with. The book was shipped promptly and in great condition.
Thanks for a great book.

To The Dillards, With Love.......2002-01-29
"Everybody on the Truck!" is an unabashed valentine to the unfairly unsung Dillards, who were bluegrass when bluegrass wasn't cool and country rock when there wasn't such a thing. As breezily told by Lee Grant, The Dillards' story is refreshingly devoid of raging egos, self-destruction and bitter ends. You'll come away from this compelling biography knowing, perhaps identifying with, and most assuredly liking The Dillards.
Grant sketches the original Dillards - brothers Douglas and Rodney Dillard, Dean Webb and Mitch Jayne - as proud sons of Missouri who longed to set the world afire with their hell-for-leather approach to bluegrass music. Grant's account of the band's misadventures during their go-for-broke journey from the Show Me state to California in late 1962 is funnier and more unbelievable than anything Hollywood could concoct. Against all odds, The Dillards enjoyed nearly instant but well-deserved success soon after reaching Los Angeles, landing a major recording contract and what would become a recurring role on "The Andy Griffith Show".
Grant devotes a good chunk of his book to his subject's indelible association with the Darlings, the eerily deadpan but musically gifted hillbilly clan The Dillards played on six episodes of "TAGS." Interestingly, The Darlings are the source of lingering ambivalence for Rodney Dillard, the group's integrity-conscious musical heart, who wasn't wild, at first, about playing a hayseed stereotype.
Between 1963 and 1970, The Dillards produced five critically-acclaimed albums, rubbed shoulders with the likes of Perry Como, Judy Garland, the Byrds and Bob Dylan and seldom rested from public appearances. "Truck" lets The Dillards themselves analyze the music and their somewhat anachronistic place in the swingin' Sixties. The insights and anecdotes of Mitch Jayne, who played bass and dispensed folksy humor in the role of group spokesman, are particularly entertaining.
To paraphrase Jayne, this "Truck" will run. Hitch a ride and hold on.
The Dillards Rule!.......2000-12-28
This book is an excellent reference for one of bluegrass music's legendary bands, the Dillards. Anyone interested in learning about Rodney, Doug, Dean and Mitch need to get a copy of this book, and fast. Lee Grant has provided us Dillards junkies with a veritable "bible" on the lives and careers of the boys. It is an engaging read. When I bought my copy, I read it straight through in one sitting! For me, that is a rarity. :-)
Suggestion: put on a copy of their CD, "There Is A Time", while reading this book. See why Briscoe Darling once said, "they's all keyed up"!
They were, and you'll be, too.
Great Book from a Great Guy.......2000-04-20
Lee Grant's fresh southern (but not too southern) writing style lights up the page. This book is a real joy to read. I highly recommend it. I am eagerly awaiting another Lee Grant book. I have heard rumors of a novel in the works. I am waiting anxiously to see if this is a rumor or plain old fact.
