5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2006-08-27

If you enjoy stories about Italian American's you won't be able to put down Gina Barreca's anthology. A notably missing work is a recent book that probably would have been represented had it been around in 2002 - Amatore Mille's ELEVEN DAYS IN AUGUST - a heartwarming memoir about a Wall Street sales executive who "vacations" from his NY job each year to rejoin his Italian family in their Italian sausage sandwich business at the Wisconsin State Fair - a must-read for lover's of Barreca's book!

5 out of 5 stars Another Gina Barreca hit!.......2003-05-25

Once again Gina Barreca wows the reader with a wonderful book by a talented author who does beautiful anthologies as well. She finds the reality, the humor and the depth in any situation. Those who love her writing should check out "They Used to call me snow white, but I drifted" "The Penguin Book of Women's Humor" "Too Much of a Good Thing is Wonderful" and the Washington Post Magazine where once a month she and Gene Weingarten do a column together. They are publishing a book together in 2003 that will also be great.

5 out of 5 stars Recipe.......2003-03-19

Into a medium sized book add: a little under one hundred Italian American writers spanning an almost equal number of years, a liberal amount of humor and irony, chopped up tragedy, mixed with redemption, olive oil (of course!), and finally one terrific editor (Gina Barreca). One need not stir liberally as the contents tend to mix and mingle well on their own. What do you get?

The most complex and multifaceted Italian American anthology that anybody has ever cooked up. Bravo!

Book Description

When Nadia Kinsella meets Jay Tiernan, she's tempted. Of course she is. Stranded together in a remote Cotswold pub, with a snowstorm raging outside—let’s face it, who would ever know? But Nadia’s already met The One. She and Laurie have been together for years—they’re practically childhood sweethearts, and she still gets goosebumps at the sight of him. Okay, maybe she doesn’t see that much of him these days, but that’s not Laurie’s fault. She can’t betray him. Besides, when you belong to a family like the Kinsellas—bewitchingly glamorous grandmother Miriam, feckless mother Leonie, stop-at-nothing sister Clare—well, someone has to exercise a bit of self-control, don’t they? I mean, you wouldn’t want to do something that you might later regret.

2 out of 5 stars What does Nadia Know?.......2007-06-23

This book was a disappointment. Not sure what Nadia knows best. Her family are more interesting than she is, but then even they are dull. Nadia's sister is nasty and bitchy but then she is in a relationship with a womaniser that is clearly using her which is apparent to everyone but her! The mother is a cow of a woman and is claerly not mother of the year material. Nadia's boss and love interest, is boring. This is a really light read and midly enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Predictable but Fun.......2006-09-05

Briefly, Nadia Knows Best is the story of a late 20's professional gardener who is engaged to the perfect man. This is a predictable enough story line that we know that he's going to dump her, going to want her back, and she's going to be tempted by an equally perfect guy she meets while getting over Stud #1. This story works because it is predictable and because the characters are so charming. Nadia is likeable. Her family is also predictably eccentric. No surprises here, just a relaxing read. And some days that's just what I'm looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Read this one again and again!.......2005-08-08

I've probably read this book 10 or 15 times. It's funny, flirty, and quirky all at the same time. You'll love Nadia, feel sorry for her, and fall in love with her family. Read this one!

4 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable 'Chick Lit'.......2004-06-13

I find nothing wrong with curling up on a hot summer's day in my garden with a delicious serving of good old British chick lit, and this book more than fills the bill.

It is not on the calibre of Marian Keyes or Jane Green, but "Nadia Knows Best" is a fun, frothy romp that kept me smiling from start to finish.

Our heroine, Nadia, is a landscape artist with a family that defies imagination...three sisters (including herself), a 72-year-old grandmother who still keeps the suitors flocking, a lovely dad who is looking for love--and a boyfriend who lets her down in a major way fairly early in the book.

Nadia tries to overcome her heartbreak over losing boyfriend Laurie while becoming increasingly and disturbingly interested in her new boss Jay, whom she has met previously under very compromising circumstances.

Sound interesting? It is--the plot is fun, fast, lovely and very readable. No major surprises, no life-changing revelations, nothing too taxing for the summertime brain. I say give it a chance. I found it absolutely charming and will definitely look for more by this author.

        4 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down - good read.......2005-12-25

I only marked 4 stars out of 5 because I actually went backwards in reading this series and enjoyed Atlantis: Bermuda Triangle a tad bit more. It was an excellent book, but in comparison to the one after, it was maybe one notch down.
The scenario starts out well, introducing the main characters, Eric Dane, Foreman, Ariana, Nagoya, ect. and has good character development among each. (Going backwards from the second book, a lot more information about character behavior is explained) Also, having read the second book in the series, I can assure that the story kicks it up a notch in the second novel and reading this book definitely helped me form more of a connection with the characters and their history.
A previous review quotes this book as a cross between X-files and Tom Clancy, which is definitely an accurate description.
Unbelievable scenario? ... maybe, but it's GOOD fiction and well written. Give it a couple of pages and allow your imagination believe it because it's a great story and gets better throughout the series.

5 out of 5 stars Great from the first to the last page.......2005-03-21

This book is simply great. Once you start reading it, you won't be able to put it down. The Bermuda Triangle, the Devil's Sea of Japan, and a small region of Cambodia: areas of great mystery and areas which have no explanation of their hidden forces which cause planes, ships and men to disappear and to never be found again. Full of incredible mystery, action, history and a possibility of what may be lurking in those areas, Atlantis simply steam rolls like a rocket. The writing is great, with supern characters and all that mystery surrounding the events taking place on our planet. Can't wait to read all of the books in the series. Highly recommended.

        4 out of 5 stars Atlantis.......2004-12-31

Though historically and scientifically inaccurate in places, this is still an interesting book to read. Many authors take liberties when writing and even moreso when the work is a sci-fi novel. Mr. Donegan has taken just enough fact and added it to the fantasy to make this work captivating enough to cause one to read the entire novel to see what the outcome will be. The main characters are well developed but not so much as to take the focus away from the central plot. If extreme scientific and historic accuracy is what you seek, this may not be the book for you. However, if you are just looking for a good, fun and comfortable read with no strings attached then look no further, this is the book for you.

        1 out of 5 stars Horribly written.......2004-10-08

This book reads like it was written by a 6th grader.

"Sounds almost like someone's trying to contact us via sonar," the captain of the Scorpion reported. "Pinging us. We're copying. Oh no!" he suddenly exclaimed. "We've got problems in the reactor."
        ...
        "Evasive action!" the captain yelled.
"Sir the reactor's off-line," another voice was shouting in the background. "We don't--"
"Goddamnit" --the captain cut the other man off-- "get us out of here number one! Blow all tanks. Now!"

There may be an interesting plot somewhere in here, but it is too poorly written to keep one's interest. The dialog is childish and full of cliches, technical details are both rare and incorrect, and imagery falls along the lines of "His rucksack was a large green pack."

Don't waste your time or money.

5 out of 5 stars The "Ring of Fire"..........2004-02-18

In this third book of the series, the Shadow decide to focus on the Pacific Rim, attacking the volcanoes and fault lines that encircle the Pacific Ocean. But not if Eric Dane has anything to say with it. While he attacks the Shadow via the gate in the Devil's Sea, Ariana tries to find a way to stop the global apocalyse.
One again there are two timelines, but in this book they end up meeting as both teams, Eric with the Americans and Russians in our present and Falco, a gladiator, and a Roman legion in our past BOTH enter the gates in their part of history.
Now add Ragnarok (the Viking from book two), a group of 13th century Samurai, THE Amelia Earhart, a bunch of crystal skulls, the Russian Mafia and a dolphin named Rachel and you get a very fine piece of work, a military thriller mixed with an adventure story that you just CAN'T put down.
"We who are about to die, salute you!"
Only one mistake - thumbs DOWN means the gladiator lives, thumbs UP means he dies.

I found this book is very useful for my buddhism study, the chapters are arranged in a very organized way. the contents are consise and accurate, it is like a notebook for most of the buddhism concepts and principles.

I really like it, and appreciate the English translation. it's great!

        5 out of 5 stars A Classic Text.......2007-05-13

This is a 1958 translation of a classic basic text for Tibetan Buddhist students. I have owned the text before and studied it. It is humbling to 'review' a classic.

This text presents the Mahayana approach with a few references to tantric elements. I use it to review ideas I need to refresh in my mind. The approach is to study the text, think about it and then meditate on what you have read. This is a source book for those persons beginning the approach to Tibetan Buddhism. I find it inexhaustible.

The author, Gampopa, was a disciple of Milarepa and Gampopa's disciples started one of the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. It is one of the standard ways to study the path leading to tantra. It is best, of course, to have a teacher or spiritual friend, to use the standard term.

5 out of 5 stars The key to open your heart....and eyes........2007-04-11

Most people I know are using to say "that's a hard time to live in". But they change nothing in their lifes, day after day, they weak up and do the same old things...I don't understand why.
Lord Gampopa, in his kindeness, show us a very effective way to review this unhappy situation. This book is a gift from the most elevate kind of intelligence the mankind alredy had made. But it's just for the braves, cause that's a kind of adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Key Text For Initiates.......2007-03-10

I was introduced to this book 18 months ago as I began a four-year Marig Munsel class at Tashi Choling on Mount Ashland. It served as our introductory text, and I've read it cover to cover at least three times. It is most thorough and accessible. I appreciate how topics are introduced, defined, then illustrated with numerous clear examples. Glossary material and appendices are especially impressive. Often the text reads like religious or found poetry, which I find especially appealing and endearing. But my greatest compliment for this text is the simple acknowledgement that my personal spiritual practice took shape and deepened considerably as a result of reading and re-reading and referring to this text.

I highly recommend it for any serious-minded spiritual student, not just those interested in Tibetan Buddhism.

--Robert McDowell, author of the forthcoming Poetry In Spiritual Practice

5 out of 5 stars Excellent text, but not for everyone.......2007-03-08

This text is an explanation of the basics of Tibetan Buddhism, written by Gampopa around a millennium ago. I've found it very useful as a source of supplemental information and alternative perspectives on various topics that have arisen in my studies. For example, a common Buddhist teaching that people are instructed by their Lama to start with is the teaching on "The four thoughts that turn the mind toward the dharma." I think Kalu Rinpoche's book "Foundations of Tibetan Buddhism" is a much better book to learn about the four thoughts, but Gampopa's text is very useful to expand and elaborate on that knowledge.

Lois Wyse understands why the recipes for dishes our grandmothers made are every family's true treasures. She wants to prevent the loss of these traditional recipes, which our grandmothers often failed to write out. Wyse's collection of grandma recipes includes familiar regional and ethnic favorites--Chicken Paprikash, Creamed Spinach, Pecan Pie, and so on. Other recipes strike a rarely felt chord of familiarity if you grew up with Johnny Mazetti (a meaty macaroni and cheese casserole) or Poppel Poppel (a bacon and potato omelet) and other specifically local dishes.

Many recipes were contributed by Wyse's friends or acquaintances, who explain their family history. Others, like the moussaka identified simply as "from an extraordinary Greek cook," are strangely anonymous, considering the premise of this book.

Reading Just Like Grandma Used to Make may send you digging for an old notebook where your own family treasures are recorded, or get you into the kitchen to start recreating a dish that lives in your memory. That, one suspects, is what Wyse really intends with this comprehensive collection. --Dana Jacobi

          Book Description

We all have fond memories of the comforting, delicious food our grandmothers made, of leisurely meals around the dining room table, and of treasured recipes handed down from generation to generation. But in too many families, these recipes went unrecorded and so have been lost to time.

In Just Like Grandma Used to Make, America's favorite grandmother, Lois Wyse, aided by Liza Antelo and Sherri Pincus, has recaptured the tastes of grandma's table in a multiethnic collection of more than 170 sure-fire, time-tested recipes from the days when Mom's apple pie was a staple on the table, not a joke in a comedy club: Chicken Pot Pie and Peanut Butter and Jelly Cookies, Swedish Meatballs and Greek Dolmas, Portuguese Caldo Verde and Miso Soup from Japan, and French Blanquette de Veau and Spaghetti with Cauliflower and Zucchini from the south of Italy. And of course there are the delectable treats that Grandma made just for us: Honey Rice Pudding, Chocolate Birthday Cake with Fudge Frosting, Chocolate Toffee Squares, Lemon Poppy-Seed Pound Cake, Gingerbread People, and Marshmallow Fudge. Adding spice to the mix are the stories that accompany each recipe, told in Lois Wyse's warm and familiar voice.

Adopted for today's home cook, the dishes in Just Like Grandma Used to Make are rich in taste and satisfaction. Prepared and served with love, they are meant to be shared with family and friends to create a new legacy of traditions and memories.

5 out of 5 stars the best cookbook ever........2001-11-20

i picked this one up at my library. it has so inspired that i've put together my own little binder filled with my mom's recipes. there's almost nothing so potent with memories than cooking, smelling, and eating the foods from my childhood. JUST LIKE GRANDMA really helped me realize what i treasure i could lose if i don't take down my mom's old stand bys that she's made over and over through the years. my favorite thing in this book is the no-brainer recipe for pie crust. pie crust has always been shrouded in mystery for me. but the authors gave me courage. if generations of women can make nice crust from this recipe then i can! don't miss this book. it will add so much to your life. the recipes are simple and clear and understandable.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific collection of familiar and obscure recipes.......2000-06-23

This well-conceived book assumes something that is utterly reasonable: Americans of all stripes long for many of the foods that their grandmothers (and their friend's grandmothers) served. Many wonderful ethnic American cuisines are represented. In addition, we might long for recipes that are simple to shop for and prepare. Most of the recipes call for no more than six or eight ingredients, all available at the supermarket. (Grandma would not ever have gone to three stores to bake one cake, remember). That's one of the best things about this book. There are no hard-to-find ingredients, or complicated, 'foodie' techniques required. There are tables of equivalents (US, British, and metric) and a good index. In addition, many different culinary "grandmothers" contributed, so I'd guess that just about anyone would find recipes that jog the memory - and appeal thoroughly. The sweets, "treats," and desserts are some of the best I've yet found in one book. A great collection and well worth its 'remainder table' price.

5 out of 5 stars I would totally recommend this book!.......1998-11-28

The third offering in the Winterthur Decorative Arts Series (which also includes Evaluating Your Collection and The Winterthur Guide to Caring for Your Collection), The Winterthur Guide to Recognizing Styles serves as an invaluable guide to identifying styles in the decorative arts.

What distinguishes Queen Anne furniture from William and Mary? Not sure if your candlestick is Federal or Empire? What does Chippendale-style creamware look like? Illustrated in full color with objects from Winterthur's outstanding collection, this book answers these questions and more. Covering the years 1640 to 1860, it provides a road map for recognizing the defining characteristics of each period and understanding how styles have developed and changed over the years.

                                5 out of 5 stars Excellent Logos.......2007-03-23

Great logo reference. Thats all it is, top notch logos, and it really gives good ideas. All designs are very relevant to today's design trends. What more can you expect? Got it used, think I paid about $9 total including shipping, can't beat that.

                                3 out of 5 stars So so.........2006-07-10

It's not a very impresive amount of best logos and symbols. I think the simplicity is the best way to show an excellent graphic job. Most of them are very well-elaborated ideas, some very old-fashioned, and you know as a graphic artist, that those logos require a large amount of time to be created in a computer. This book is lack of good examples and i know that you could find better logos and symbols in your desktop than the ones you find here. There are good reviews in each page about the origin of the design. That's a good idea to understand the creative proccess involved. But if i were you...i'll choose another book.

This book is ful of American exemples, not so good ones. And also it could be better printed.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not Best.......2002-11-18

This is not a bad book. I looked at it quite a bit when it first arrived, but I'm sorry to say I did not find anything too inspiring about the chosen works. Now it spends all of its time on my shelf. However, I get more out of a much smaller book at a much smaller price called Layout Index by Jim Krause. The Layout Index spends 90% of its time on my desk and inspires me regularly.

4 out of 5 stars Great all around logo book.......2000-06-13

This is a great book showing some very contemporary logos and innovatiove ways to do collateral. The really great thing about this book it that it tells you what stock the collateral was printed on and the tools used. A great frame of reference.

5 out of 5 stars Loads of design inspirations!.......2000-04-27

This book is an excellent resource for web or graphic designers looking for design ideas. Every page is filled with creative motifs for business cards and letterhead, which can be used to formulate ideas for web designs or other creative media. This book belongs on EVERY designer's shelf!

                                5 out of 5 stars Very nice.......2000-03-21

This is a visually pleasing book, with sample letterhead and logos organized by type of business. It provided my design students with identity ideas that they don't typically see in the Midwest.
