The collision of Cuban dreams with sometimes harsh American realities has been Oscar Hijuelos's great theme, most notably in Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love. Certainly it's at the heart of his fifth novel, Empress of the Splendid Season, which chronicles the trials, tribulations, and infrequent triumphs of a Cuban American clan over the course of a half century. The protagonist, Lydia Espana, has grown up in pre-Castro Cuba, the pampered daughter of a prosperous businessman. But when she has the audacity to violate her father's small-town code of conduct--by sleeping with an itinerant musician--she pays a terrible penalty: "Her family, turning unfairly against her with a nearly Biblical wrath, had banished her, unprepared to contend with an indifferent world."

Where is Lydia banished to? New York, of course. And in this most indifferent of cities, the former "queen of the Congo line" finds herself in a less exalted role: that of a cleaning woman. This demotion she accepts with a very credible mixture of resignation and rock-ribbed realism: "The hardest part of being a cleaning woman had to do with the way people looked at her; often as if she were 'nothing.' It hurt her most when men did not notice her. The nature of the work itself, the outfit, the end-of-the-day fatigue, the messiness of that labor were not glamorous, so what could she expect." Lydia is less sanguine about her family's difficulties, from her husband Raul's near-fatal heart attack to her son's brushes with the law. Empress of the Splendid Season is in fact an ensemble piece that passes the point of view from character to character, from generation to generation. But it's Lydia's sensibility--at once stoic and sensuous--that ultimately enlivens this latest take on the American (or perhaps Cuban American) Dream. --William Davies

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Oscar Hijuelos, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love, returns with this look at Harlem life in the mid-20th century. His story revolves around the trials and tribulations of Lydia España, a "wonder of affection, crankiness, strength, and gentility." Lydia's eternal belief that she is somehow special carries her through her life's changes, from pampered daughter of a wealthy Cuban family to struggling immigrant seamstress to widowed cleaning lady in Harlem. Rita Moreno reads this abridgment with considerable aplomb, her remarkable range of accents and emotions conveying all the novel's passion. (Running time: 6 hours, 4 cassettes) --C.B. Delaney

Book Description

Through four novels in the last decade, Oscar Hijuelos has produced a body of work that is without rival in contemporary literature, both in the lush, incantatory rhythms of his extraordinary prose and in his profound and heartfelt vision. In his transcendent new novel, Hijuelos tells the story of Lydia Espana, a beautiful and formerly prosperous é'migré from pre-Castro Cuba, who becomes a cleaning lady in New York. Once the spoiled, pampered daughter of a small-town mayor and adored by mena "queen of the Congo line"she is forced because of a youthful sexual indiscretion to leave home and, in 1947, finds herself suddenly living the life of a working poor. In time she falls in love with Raul, a humble waiter. One night in a Manhattan ballroom, in the middle of a bolero, Raul purposes marriage, for Lydia is his "empress of the most beautiful and splendid season, which is love."

A life of promise is disrupted when Raul falls ill and Lydia, finding employment as a domestic, becomes the head of the family. Striving to educate her town children, Rico and Alicia, in the style of the upper class, she must endure a lesson in humanity, cleaning the homes of New Yorkers much better off than herself. Among her employers is Mr. Osprey, a reserved and kindly lawyer, who eventuality takes an interest in her family's well-being and, during the turmoil of the 1960s, intervenes at a critical juncture in the life of her teenage son, Rico. Throughout this novel Lydia remains a sensual and powerful woman who meets the trails of a lonely life with humor and a gleam of triumph in her eyea sense that she is someone specialan empress of fortitude, of dignity.

Hijuelo's genius for evoking the heart and soul of his characters has never been more vivid, moving, and impassioned than in Empress of the Splendid Season. A master of eloquent detail, Hijuelos allows Lydia to open up, alive and vibrant on the page. No one writes better of love or the pulse of the city. And no one has better captured the complexity of what happens to generations of people who come to America: how assimilation ius at once the achievement of dreams and yet, sometimes, a loss of what has rooted us to the past.

Lydia, I am to you, as a sparrow adoring the sky;

Lydia, you are as the moon reflecting upon the water,

which is my soul;

Lydia, you are the queen of beauty,

the Empress of my love,

and you preside over the splendidness of my feelings for you,

like the morning sun on the most glorious day

of the most beautiful and splendid season,

which is love...
Raul Espana to his future wife on the night he proposed marriage, 1949, from Empress of the Splendid Season

4 out of 5 stars Great storytelling... about the memories of Cuba.......2005-11-04

I really enjoyed the way this author painted a picture of a society girl from the good old days in Cuba who ends up in New York as a cleaning lady. I loved the way she was always such a lady and was always soo concerned with what the neighbors were going to say and that the most important thing was to carry oneself as if they were a person of class.

The ending did not do it for me, we end up with Lydia draaming of something totally irrelovent. Even her bosses ending was so blah. I did enjoy it however and am looking forward to reading this authors other books!

4 out of 5 stars A splendid look into Latin American life.......2004-04-07

Hijuelos has a way with his words that makes this book easy to read and enjoy.
The story is interesting and captivating. I really enjoyed his portrayal of Latin Americans.

4 out of 5 stars Living an examined life........2003-03-20

Oscar Hijuelos writes of people with intense rich interior lives. These are people we admire for their emotional constancy and pity for their obsessions. I've read three of Oscar Hijuelos' novels. This is the least engaging of the three, but still a very nice book.

3 out of 5 stars Hijuelos goes on auto-pilot.......2002-02-20

Not that this isn't a good novel. But with its Cuban immigrants in New York, great writing and not much of a plot, this is a book that the author's already written a couple times before.

4 out of 5 stars Intelligent and compassionate.......2001-08-15

This is a novel that could be turned into a dramatic and engaging movie along the lines of "Mambo Kings." Nothing happens in this or other Hijeulos novels of great magnitude beyond the small circles of characters they embrace. But that's what makes this book great. He does a good job of transporting the reader into the lives of nobody important but who are filled with great dreams and aspirations. And there's enough intelligence and political and social commentary to elevate it beyond the typical hack drama and movie of the week dribble that books like this often are. It won't change the world, but it's an engaging and enjoyable read.

                    Book Description

                    The Starship Enterprise NX-01 is humanity's flagship -- the first vessel to begin a systematic exploration of what lies beyond the fringes of known space. Led by Captain Jonathan Archer, eighty of Starfleet's best and brightest set forth to pave humanity's way among the stars. Tempered by a year's worth of exploration, they are a disciplined, cohesive unit. But now one of their number has fallen.

                    Bad enough that Ensign Alana Hart is dead. Worse still that she died while attempting to sabotage the Enterprise -- and at the hands of Lieutenant Malcolm Reed, the ship's armory officer and her nominal superior. Even as questions swirl around Hart's death, Archer, Reed, and the rest of the Enterprise crew find themselves caught squarely in the middle of another tense situation- a brutal war of terror between two civilizations.

                    But in the Eris Alpha system, nothing -- and no one -- are what they seem. And before the secret behind Ensign Hart's demise is exposed, Reed will be forced to confront death one more time.

                    If you are a fan of this version of Star Trek, this along with Stern's other Enterprise books are great. I wish Mr.Stern had been writing for this much maligned series. Characterizations, plot and emotional hooks are all in here.
                    ENJOY!!!!

                    4 out of 5 stars One of the better Enterprise books.......2005-05-09

                    Having read nearly all the other books, I enjoyed this one. It's kind of surprising, especially since Reed is not one of my favorite characters.

                    The plot was intriguing and the character seemed like he jumped off the page.

                    If you're going to read any of the books, this is the one thus far.

                    3 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad at all..........2004-05-18

                    So many Star Trek books really...well, they really aren't very good. It was a pleasure to read one where there was actually a bit of character development.

                    As per other ST books, there are lots of typos, misspellings, and obvious spell-check grammar mistakes - can someone PLEASE actually read these books before they are published! But this writer is head and shoulders above other ST writers who are often barely readable. This novel was well written, had flow, and an interesting story. Worth $ for a paperback.

                    4 out of 5 stars Stand Out Among Star Trek Books.......2003-11-14

                    What Price Honor is a stand-out among Star Trek books. Unlike many, which simply fall into the ship stops at planet, crew sees problem, crew solves problem and saves planet mold, What Price Honor weaves an interesting tale, combining scenes from the near past, months earlier and present-day in to a cohesive story. We gradually learn more about how ensign Alana Hart dies as the near-past and present-day plot-lines advance.

                    We follow how Ensign Hart goes from a social recluse to finally having a romantic interlude with Malcolm and requesting a transfer right before her death. Complicataing matters is that this all represents "first contact" with the Sarkassians and Ta'alaat who are embroiled in a interplanetary war over ownership of technology from a now-extinct advanced society.

                    Malcolm & Captain Archer's desire to resolve what happened to Ensign Hart (who we later learn was actually killed by Malcolm) draws them deep into the thick of the inter-species conflict.

                    3 out of 5 stars Good but not great........2003-07-26

                    This book probably should rate a bit higher than three stars, but four would definitely be too high for it; it is a gripping action-adventure novel, with good characterization and an interesting plot, but it is really nothing out of the ordinary as Trek novels go (although it WAS nice to see a more in-depth look at Lt. Malcolm Reed, who is usually just a background character.)

                    On the down side, this is one of those novels that prominently contains a mystery that the reader sees coming by no later than chapter four, but that the characters just can't imagine the solution to until the very end. At least in this case it isn't because the characters are being portrayed as dolts, but simply because this sort of thing is not something one would expect in real life, but any reader of fantasy or science fiction knows that in a fictional story, it is very possible; still, even if their relative lack of speed on the uptake is not unreasonable, it still makes the story very frustrating for the reader.

                    I enjoyed reading this book, but I can't say that there was anything particularly spectacular about it that would make it stand out in the crowd of Star Trek books, other than the fact that it is (at this point) one of very few "Enterprise" novels. If you enjoy the show, or would like a good introduction to it, this book is certainly worth the read, as it is if you simply want a good, action-packed Star Trek novel. But if you want more than that, this isn't the book for you.

                          5 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook & Easy!!!!.......2006-03-25

                          This cookbook is great! I will use it for gifts for those people on your list who have been kind to you and deserve a little something. With the family getting bigger, a gift out of a jar is the best gift to give because it's not pricey and someone will always know it came from the heart!

                          5 out of 5 stars Gifts in a jar Bars and Brownies.......2004-08-24

                          Lots of fun. I've done all of the recipes on two other books in this series and have been impressed with almost all of them. I hope to try all of them in the future.

                          3 out of 5 stars Brownies were a little ...okay ALOT dry.......2004-05-14

                          I'm only writing this review to let you know the actual outcome of one of the recipes. I fell in love with Gifts In A Jar because they make great unique gifts. I made 4 jars today to give to teachers. Because this was my first time giving the gift to others I thought I'd try the recipe to taste what they would be making. They were VERY dry. Have one with a big glass of milk. The jars themselves came out very cute but I wished I had tasted the recipe before I decided to do them. I am a little disappointed. Just thought you'd like to know too. Try the recipe first and then decide if you want others to think this is your culinary best. I wish I had time to get another gift. Oh well.

                          5 out of 5 stars Two Tumbs Up!!.......2004-01-16

                          I bought the entire series and was very impressed. I was tired of baking cookies every Christmas and thought I would try something new. I am SO glad that I gave "mixes" instead of stressing over baking. The responce I got was TWO THUMBS UP!

                          I made over two dozen mixes in two hours! The most difficult part was cutting the labels and decorations! I bought fabric that didn't fray, elastic jeweler's thread and gold bells. The books come with six receipe cards to attach to the jar!

                          The only suggesting I have is to buy the supplies at Costco and buy bulk. You'll need 10# more pounds than you think. I found myself running back to the store two times. For four dozen mixes (of cookies and bars) you'll need 40# of flour 20# sugar 15# brown sugar plus hoards of chopped walnuts and various "chips". I found that I needed far more white chocolate chips than anticipated. I experimented by adding different flavored chips (peanut butter, andes mint chips). Buy the WIDE mouth jars - you can buy a "funnel" at Walmart for $1.50. My local grocier ran out of wide mouths so I bought regular jars and had to make a paper funnel (pain in the...). Now-a-days, when you buy the wide mouth jars the lids are attached (no precleaning).

                          I live at high altitude and made adjustments to the cookie mixes, still they baked flat. For high altitude - stick to the bars and breads.

                          The only thing I would do differently: Photo copy the receipe cards so you don't have to recreate them on the computer. You can buy heavy stock paper (20#) and go to Kinkos and reprint them.

                          5 out of 5 stars gifts in a jar.......2001-10-28

                          i think this is a great book because gifts now adays are to materialized people forget that gifts come from the heart so by having books on there bookshelves like this one or others that are similar people can do something for someone else without the worlds interference because it will be from the heart. everybody has to eat in todays world it very busy work, work workand no time to cook so people would allow themselves to let other people show them shortcuts in mealtime or goodies at the drop of a hat. I personally think that people would have more time to enjoy life. people in general enjoy homemade gifts versus dust collectors especially if it has to do with food it is something that can be passed on.

                                5 out of 5 stars What Would Halloween Be Without Beistle Decorations Filling Up The House?.......2006-08-30

                                "The Beistle Company" has been around for a long, long time, providing decorations and party supplies to a countless number of people in the United States and around the world.

                                The company was founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the year 1900 by Martin Luther ("M.L.") Beistle. M.L.'s company has grown to become one of the largest producers of Halloween novelties and party supplies in the world.

                                When M.L. Beistle started his company, he worked out of the basement of his Pennsylvania home, mainly crafting decor for hotel lobbies.

                                Allow me to quote from Beistle's very own website (located at beistle.com), via an "FAQ" section at that site:

                                "We {The Beistle Company} are the world's largest manufacturer of party goods. We have been designing and producing decorations and party goods for over 100 years. Our hallmark is the quality of products and the high level of customer service we provide."

                                ~~~~~~~~~
                                I still have a couple of packages of old-fashioned Beistle halloween cutouts that I happily display around the house each and every October. It just wouldn't be Halloween-time without Beistle's first-class and spooky-looking cardboard decorations adorning the walls.
                                Beistle's nostalgic 1950s- and 1960s-era Halloween cutouts can still be obtained at some stores in the USA that sell holiday-themed party decorations and supplies. I can recall buying many of Beistle's products at "Woolworth's", when that store was still in business years ago. "Kresge's" (which later became "K-Mart") was another good place to pick up Beistle items many moons ago.
                                Today, however, you'll have to search around for other stores and specialty shoppes that may carry a few pieces of vintage Beistle decor.
                                The packages of Beistle Halloween decorations that I currently have feature a total of eight cardboard cutouts per pack, one of each of the following vintage Beistle-created designs (in vivid color). Remember these?.......
                                1.) "The Haunted House", with a spooky-looking witch standing in the front door of a house. The witch comes complete with a pointed hat and a cane. There's also a black cat sitting in a window. An owl can also be seen in the attic window above the witch. A flying bat is also part of this eerie hunk of decor. The bat is seen flying against a bright yellow full moon which looms appropriately above the witch's scary-looking dwelling. A leafless tree stretches its way skyward on this cutout too, with a well-placed lit lantern hanging from one of its branches just above the house's front door.
                                This colorful "Witch In The House" paperboard cutout is my all-time favorite Halloween decoration. It's a simple piece of cardboard -- but it depicts everything about Halloween so well within its 6" x 9" dimensions. Even the "howling wind" is represented here, via a series of lines drawn on the cutout near the witch and the door of the haunted house. I don't know who it was who designed this particular piece of Halloween artwork -- but I tip my hat to that artist.
                                2.) "Owl Perched On Tree Limb In Front Of Full Moon". .... This Beistle classic is my second-favorite among the cutouts made by that company. The owl's wide-open, piercing eyes are a standout feature. I've also taken note of the "extra markings" that have been added around the owl's eyes on post-1960s versions of this particular cutout. I had previous versions of this decoration which lacked these accentuated eye markings. Either version is first rate, and always worthy of being displayed each and every October. :)
                                3.) "Black Cat / Jack-O-Lantern On A Pole / Smiling Crescent Moon".
                                4.) "Jack-O-Lantern With Straw Hat".
                                5.) "Jack-O-Lantern With Corn-Cob Pipe".
                                6.) "Witch Flying On Broomstick Over A Crescent Moon".
                                7.) "Black Cat With Monocle".
                                8.) "Close Up Of Witch's Face In Front Of Full Moon".
                                ~~~~~~~~~

                                Beistle has manufactured some very simple designs for these cutouts, but they each emit an effectively-spooky and eerie quality that befits the "All Hallows Eve" season very well.

                                The Beistle Company, as referenced throughout this 160-page softcover book, makes many other Halloween-related items besides just the paperboard cutouts I've gushed about above.

                                But, to me, Beistle shall forever be exclusively associated with those simple, but absolutely perfect, pieces of thin colorful cardboard with pictures of owls, witches, cats, and jack-o-lanterns on them.

                                Just like that green tree that gets decorated each December, those hunks of Beistle cardboard are a looked-forward-to tradition every October. To borrow this book's title, I'd have to classify them as "Timeless Halloween Collectibles".

                                5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book.......2005-08-03

                                This book has good descriptions and great graphics for identifying and pricing old, hard-to-find Beistle Halloween paper goods.

                                3 out of 5 stars For Beistle Vintage Halloween Lovers..........2005-03-04

                                Schiffer recently published a book that solely profiles vintage Halloween items made by Beistle from 1920-1949. Titled "Timeless Halloween Collectibles", the data was compiled by Claire M. Lavin who had access to Beistle's archives. The book has both strong and weak points. Among the strong is the photography. Done by Claire's husband, Phil Lavin, the images are crisp and are simply superb. The text is comprised almost entirely of quotes from various Beistle catalogs that helpfully point out the actual names Beistle assigned to their products. The 160-page book is logically arranged and has a generally pleasing layout. Curiously, the book has a 2005 publication date, although it was released in October 2004. As with any book, there are weaknesses. The pages largely contain items seen in previously published references. Although there is some new information unearthed, considering the possibilities any 160-page book provides, there wasn't as much as I had hoped. The book's serious shortcomings are a lack of explanation as to when catalogs were published during the year relative to the actual availability of the items shown (for instance was the 1929 catalog issued in January 1929 with product availability in February 1929, or was it issued in December 1929 with product availability in 1930?); a surprising lack of explanation or even discussion of the varying marks Beistle used during this time period; and a lack of definitive explanation as to which items shown were actually produced for public consumption versus those items residing in the archives that were never commercially produced. The captions are almost all mere recitations of Beistle catalog verbiage. I wish there would have been more of the compiler's voice here. That said, I do think the book is worth buying in order to more fully understand the importance of Beistle in the vintage Halloween memorabilia realm.

                                4 out of 5 stars this book is legendary.......2004-11-12

                                although first published in 1918, this book still has a lot to offer contemporary handweavers.

                                i have been told that there are some errors in drafting, but i haven't found them in the patterns i've been interested in.

                                the photos are fascinating, not so much for the techniques illustrated, but for the historical interest in dress.

                                if i remember correctly, this was used as a text in the chicago school district when students learned about the crafts that housed, clothed and maintained them. part of the philosophy was that hand work taught confidence through skill. it wouldn't be a bad idea today, when so many people have no idea where there clothes come from, how they're made, or anything about the skill and ingenuity of women and men througout the ages.

                                for many reasons, then, this book still has a place in the weaver's library.

                                      Asian Elements offers a rich sampling of Asian themes and styles from homes in Sri Lanka, Bali, Hong Kong, and beyond. The perfect choice for devotees of the austere oriental aesthetic, its presentation is divided along the lines of the five elements: earth (gardens, clay, stone), air (space, light, flow), fire (kitchens, metal, glass), water (bathrooms, waterside homes), and wood (furniture, textiles). Is it beautiful? Yes. Is it useful? Well... that depends. Categorizing the material by element is a very photogenic concept, and the book presents a sumptuous assortment of oriental textures and accents. A double-page spread shows items made from wood: bamboo stalks, a staircase, a pair of Japanese geta (clogs), writing scrolls, the bark of a tree--all photographed with warmth and simplicity. While it will provide hours of dewy daydreaming, this may be one book that doesn't make the journey from coffee table to work table when you're making plans to decorate your home. --Jhana Bach

                                      Book Description

                                      An Asian aesthetic has taken root in the West. Asian interiors extol the use of natural materials, and exude a sense of harmony and balance in tune with today's softened minimalism. This sourcebook of authentic Asian styles from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bali, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong, and southern India breaks a way from traditional interior design books. It is divided according to the five elements: AIR examines the use of space, light, and indoor/outdoor architecture; EARTH explores Asian gardens, including Japanese Zen gardens, and materials like clay, stone, terra-cotta, and concrete; WATER looks at bathrooms, waterside homes, and water gardens; FIRE focuses on kitchens and materials transformed by fire: metal, glass, and ceramics; WOOD contains furniture, textiles, and wood-related materials from bamboo to rattan.

                                      I was hoping that this book would go a lot deeper into the ideas behind the 5 elements in Asian design thinking. The pictures are nice, but the text, the reasoning and emotional value behind the elements is surface and sparse.

                                        As a graphic designer, I use this book to pick duotones, monotones, and tritones from when I'm working in Photoshop. I trust a printed sample of a tone to be more accurate than what my screen gives me (no, I don't have calibration tools) so for me, the dozen or so pages at the back of the book with 4 color breakdowns is helpful. The preceding pages are not as they fail to identify what PMS or spot color is being used. Every other designer that I've shown this book to feels the same way.

                                        Great idea for a book but poor execution.

                                        Just as the initial reviewer, Jean-Philippe Gay indicated, there is not a lot of information in this book. There is much more information how to handle duotones, etc in some older and new books about Adobe's Photoshop than in this one. I should have listened to Mr.Gay but I made the mistake to buy it. A really disappointing experience and no learning opportunity !

                                        1 out of 5 stars Mostly fluff with little useful information.......1999-10-25

                                        This is another example of the kind of book anyone with a page layout program and Photoshop could whip up in a day or so. Just type in a few paragraphs of generalities then take some photos and layout a template to build 130 pages of color variations. A rather disappointing purchase.

                                        this book is not just an account of prison life, but the reason why many black and white youth are not understood. Also a must for anyone thinking of entering into a mixed relationship, but read between the lines or you may miss out. I was very moved by the way Trevor Hercules expresses the thought and feeling of black people, yet not isolating whites. Read it and feel the tension.
