In the Service of Dragons contains some of the most powerful scenes I've ever read, especially the sweeping, epic scenes. It swept me away, and this second book was no less powerful in its imagery. The author doesn't let you miss a moment of the action, and it only gets more intense as the story goes along.
The mighty titans and great eagles have returned from the ancient past and contineu to work to stop the darkness. Noman, the mysterious keeper of the City of the Sky, has seen the signs and he is gathering those who can stop the darkness. Meanwhile the Great Kingdom is in turmoil with the heir to the throne gone across the sea to battle a distant enemy when another enemy has returned closer to home.
I bought this book and then read it in print it is so great! The time starts flying, flying right from the start. If you like scifi/fantasy like I do you will love this book too. The best book for any Eragon, Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings fan to read!! It's not Tolkien, but it is very good!!

This book tells the story of the men of the kingdoms and elves of the reaches. It is the story of Vilmos who has a secret gift of magic, Adrina a princess from a dying land, and Seth a great warrior who is trying to save his people and the world. In this story, Prince Valam Alder has traveled to the lands of the elves to try to stop a war, but meanwhile war starts in his own lands, and everyone he cares about is caught in the middle. This book combines combat, suspense, magic, hidden love and more into an adventure-filled and exciting book.

This is a terrific book. More along the lines of 'LORD of the Rings' than Harry Potter. Great characters from heroes like Prince Valam Alder and his men to the young wizard Vilmos to the mysterious Xith and the lovely Adrina and her sisters plus the dragon Tnavres. Great writing, terrific adventure, a MUST READ for any fastasy fan.

This book in my eyes is so much more captivating then the LOTR trilogy. In the LOTR trilogy there were points where I had to put the book down, so far, in the "kingdoms and elves" and "service of dragons", I havent found a point where i wanted to. The author gave the reader a world to sink into, and characters with real personalities. Overall one of the better fantasy books I have read.

Jessica Stern has talked extensively with religious radicals from all three of the "great" faiths.
She has looked both at the religous as well as political and financial factors at what truly motivates the terrorist.
This book is very enlightening. Well on parr with the one By Peter Bergen for those of us who truly want to understand the "new" threat facing us today.
Keep Hammering- That Square Peg Must Fit.......2007-01-26
There is no moral equivalence between Christianity and Islam. It sounds so neat and tidy, this idea that 'fundamentalists' of every stripe are dangerous. The only problem is that if a belief system is based on loving ones enemies, then a fundamentalist of such belief would be a very loving person, not a terrorist. Of course, there are historical exceptions and a very few contemporary ones. People like to mention the Spanish Inquisition but fail to mention that more people are killed by Islamists in any given year than died in all 350 years of the Inquisition. I am amazed by these people who search high and low, far and wide to find some nerdy kooks who "plan to" "want to" were going to" do some terrible thing when Islamic terrorists by the hundreds of thousands are committing acts of terrorism, large and small, in 30 countries around the world. And within 10 miles of most American homes there is probably a Muslim family sending his check every month to support the charity/terrorist network. Oh yes, but what about the KKK? A few impotent bigots in Alabama and one or two lone gunmen here are there are not equivalent in severity, number, motive, or scope to the cancer of Islamic terror.
There simply is no moral equivalence between Islam and Christianity, fundamentalist or otherwise. People have committed atrocities in the name of the Christian God but such acts (comparatively minute in scope compared to Islamic aggression) put the terrorist at odds with Christian orthodoxy. You cannot be a good Christian and kill abortion doctors. The act of murder is forbidden and therefore the terrorist is no better than the abortionist. On the contrary a Muslim can and must participate in violent Jihad, either personally or through the financial support of it, according to most schools of thought within Islam. If a Muslim blows up a bus full of Jews, he is a hero and a martyr and a very good Muslim.
The Quran implores its legions, "make war on the infidels who dwell around you." Sura 9:123. Such verses are found throughout the Quran while there are no such incitements to violence in the New Testament but rather admonishments to humility, charity, and forgiveness. I know hundreds of Christian fundamentalists. Even the slightest suggestion of extremist thought would not be tolerated among them. The author must be a practitioner of yoga, because she has twisted herself and this book into a pretzel of faulty logic and research.
Just to mention the atrocities of one small drop in the river of blood that is Islam, one can consider the Danish cartoons furor. Estimates are that more than 250 people were killed and many buildings bombed and burned as a result of the cartoons. What was the Christian response to a much more offensive product though equally blasphemous to Christians--The Davinci Code? The result was a robust public discussion that caused millions of the faithful to read the book to see and decide for themselves. It is fine to talk about the religious roots of terror. They are not hard to find. Open the Quran and read how a Muslim will be rewarded for the horrific murder and dismemberment of innocent women, men, and children. Make that case, but leave Christians out of it.
One of the smartest authors i've ever read.......2006-11-26
I am not a professional reviewer or publicist, just a regular person; I often feel like reviews are written by the publisher or author's friends. I am neither, so this is my honest review. This book is an amazingly insightful book on terrorist and the circumstances that go into creating terrorists. I think it is an important read for anyone trying to understand (not sympathize with) terrorists. To beat an enemy you have to understand him. Stern is one of the most intelligent and smartest authors I have ever read, but the book did not make me feel stupid or talk down to me. It was thorough and informative, and quite an eye opener. I am an active duty Marine Infantry-man, and wish I had read this book before my multiple deployments to Iraq.
Interesting addition to the literature on terrorism.......2006-09-18
This is an interesting addition to the literature on terrorism. What sets it apart from many other books is the author's attempt to base analysis on a series of interviews with those whom she defines as terrorists. Some who review this book negatively focus on their sense that her definition is too generous, and includes those whom they would not see in that light. Nonetheless, the interviews illuminate her points nicely. And, too, if those whom she has interviewed do not represent the terrorist population well, her conclusions will suffer. Terrorism, for Stern, is ". . .an act or threat of violence against noncombatants with the objective of exacting revenge, intimidating, or otherwise influencing an audience" (page xx).
She begins by assessing the types of grievances that lead to terrorist activities. Among these are a sense of humiliation that terrorists see themselves as suffering from, alienation, demographics (religious groups, socioeconomic groups, and the like), history, and territory. Then, she explores the organization of "holy war" operations. She notes that organizations run a continuum from "lone wolves" or "leaderless resistance" models on to "terrorist armies or commander-cadre organizations." As to leaders, she argues that the requirements for their success are similar to those of firms or nongovernment organizations. She says: "Today's multinational terrorist leader is an entrepreneur who brings together mission, money, and market share" (page 142). The evidence suggests to her that terrorist organizations that are most successful have a resilient network organization, with "widely distributed leadership and minimal (or successfully encrypted) communication among nodes" (page 144). Greater organizational communication can make it easier for states to penetrate such organizations and thereby disrupt them .
After the analysis, she speaks of policy recommendations. She also suggests why Islamic countries are particularly good recruiting areas for terrorist organizations. The list of policy suggestions would include some of the following: try to undercut the attractiveness of students going to extremist religious schools (which can become seedbeds of terrorist recruitment), go after the infrastructure of recruitment of new terrorists, upgrade security at vulnerable and attractive targets (so-called "target hardening" strategy), avoid being sucked into ongoing occupations (since this will generate resentment and lead to recruitment of terrorists), work to strengthen "weak states" such as Afghanistan (or stay out of such states), before they descend into chaos and warlordism and terrorist recruitment. And, finally, she argues in her last lines: ". . .what counts is what we fight for, not what we oppose. We need to avoid giving into spiritual dread, and to hold fast to the best of our principles, by emphasizing tolerance, empathy, and courage" (page 296).
Overall, this is a useful study to add to others. Her methodology is interesting, but fraught with the problem noted above. Nonetheless, a good addition to the literature.
Objective, Credible Information.......2006-08-16
Stern took the time to personally visit terrorists in various causes around the world. Religious terrorism, she tells us, arises from pain or loss. Its converts often long for a simpler time when the outside world didn't humiliate them. Their thinking often includes "Kill and be rewarded in heaven," "Why is my life not going as well as it should? The answer is (fill in the blank) "America, affirmative action, Jews, . . .," "It is clear from the Bible that this land is legitimately our," etc. Killing homosexuals, Jews, etc. is seen as a way of worshipping God.
They view people who practice other versions of their faith, or other faiths, as infidels; because the true faith is purportedly in danger, the killing of innocents becomes, in their view, permissible. These grievances often mask a deeper fear - godless universe, loneliness, and often greed for political power, land, or money.
Palestinian terrorists Stern visited believe "There are no civilians in Israel because every citizen is required to serve in the army." Palestinian authority suicide bombers often are teens, disproportionately are from refugee camps, mentally immature, can't find a job, more likely than not have been prisoners in Israeli jails, have no girlfriends, and throws himself into religion (even the 4 A.M. prayers - skipped by many devout Muslims). Thus, they are easily identified and then recruited.
Arabs interviewed repeatedly express their dislike/hatred of Jews and their treatment of Palestinians, but no reference to hating us because of democracy or freedom. (President Bush would benefit from reading those quotes.)
Stern also studied American and Pakistani extremists.

Each step is listed by the exact time of day at which it should be done, even when to run the dishwasher.
The chapters all contain three or four party themes, each with recipes, serving piece suggestions, detailed timelines, and grocery lists. Some recipes even list lighter ingredients that can be substituted for high-fat ones without compromising taste. Each menu also includes wine suggestions to lessen the stress of choosing wine, even suggesting which glass to use and what to do if the host doesn¹t have enough wine glasses. Because so many young adults lead busy lives, the menus also include shortcuts in case there isn't enough time to make the entire menu from scratch.
One of the most helpful features of Rebecca Lang¹s Southern Entertaining for a New Generation is that the book provides serving suggestions for younger cooks who don't yet own all the serving pieces they need. "There is no reason not to host a party because you don¹t have enough china," she insists. "You can still have a great time by using some of the fun, creative suggestions in this book."

As a proud Southern Woman, entertaining friends and family is one of my greatest joys. As a young Southern Woman, "Rebecca Lang's Southern Entertaining for a New Generation" makes entertaining my friends and family as easy as making a cake (see page 174). And while the title directly addresses a new generation, I believe all generations of hosts/hostesses will benefit from this incredible book.
The pages are filled with great sections that will help anyone pull off the perfect party including wine basics, serving basics, and a great section that helps answer the age-old question "to RSVP, or not to RSVP." It even covers little problems that most hosts may overlook such as the appropriate flow of the party through your home and how to seat a table to maximize conversation for successful mingling.
The absolute BEST parts of the book are the timelines that help even the busiest people plan for parties of any size. It's FANTASTIC! Last month my best friend turned thirty, and, of course, we just had to throw her a surprise birthday party. All of sudden, however, our guest list jumped from 15 to 30, and almost overnight, it jumped to 45. Thanks to Rebecca's timelines, it didn't matter how many guests we were going to have, because we were prepared for them all! We held a fun Seafood Supper (see page 144), and followed all the recipes mentioned and we followed the timeline. The party was a huge success, and I believe it was not only the fantastic people in my home, but the superb timeline and information in this wonderful book.
Here are my final thoughts on "Rebecca Lang's Southern Entertaining for a New Generation" -- Southern cooking is special. It is traditional and usually passed from mothers to daughters or grandmothers to granddaughters. The fact that Rebecca has dedicated this book to her grandmother, and she has included many of the family recipes her grandmother passed to her, is nothing short of beautiful. It is a wonderful homage not only to her grandmother but to true Southern family tradition. I felt as though I was sitting across from Rebecca herself in my kitchen sharing stories....as Southern women do. Thank you Rebecca!
I have recommended "Rebecca Lang's Southern Entertaining for a New Generation" to many of my friends who are very pleased with their purchase, and if you enjoy the true Southern tradition of hosting in your home, whether it's an intimate dinner party or a large fiesta, you absolutely NEED this book.

I purchased this book at a Girls Night Out cooking demo in Charleston. Rebecca is as delightful in person as she comes across in the book. It takes you through the steps so you come out with a delicious product - the macaroni and cheese is to die for ---- just like my mom used to make. A must for those new to entertaining or seasoned cooks looking for great recipes to incorporate into their standard recipes

I love this book. I grew up in the same small town as Rebecca. Reading this book allowed allowed me to recall many of the recipes shared in this book. The entertaining style of Rebecca and those close to her is so familiar. I have purchased this book for several bridal showers. Rebecca did a great job of organizing the recipes and entertaining tips to make them easy for anyone to follow.

This cookbook is a gem - the author's style is warm and her recipes are absolutely fantastic, yet uncomplicated. I am an avid cook and try many new things, but these are truly some of the best. The creamed spinach is a special favorite (she includes chopped tomatoes...delicious!)

By charting Nutting's activities, Denenberg creates a picture of an influential cultural critic who deftly combined myth and materialism, contributing significantly to both the growth of consumerism and the development of an antimodern worldview in the twentieth-century United States.

Colonial invention and re-invention.......2004-05-09
Though I didn't see the show for which this book serves as a kind of catalogue, my enjoyment of it isn't limited to that. I don't know much about the Colonial revival in American culture, and this book is a splendid introduction to the ways in which our present-day culture have been modelled and molded by a series of cultural enterpreneurs like Nutting, for history is invidious and in the post-modern condition we can no longer distinguish between what is "real" and what is the simulacrum. Nutting saw clearly how through mass production he could disseminate his own vision of what colonial New England history was like, in ways that would reinforce his own prejudices towards nationalism, etc., while gibing with his genuinely moving and democratic feelings towards beauty akin to the Arts and Crafts movement of the UK and the USA of a slightly earlier date. Thomas Denenberg has all the facts and figures at his fingertips--he's a wonderful companion and never allows the readers to lose sight of the overall picture amid the myriad pleasues of Nutting minutiae. I'll have to find out more about American historiography, especially if it's this deliciously presented.

Lavish Victorian Style.......2006-08-03
I absolutely love this book. This book provides inspiration to create beautiful and intricate pages. I would not suggest this book for beginners or who are looking for step by step instructions. However, if you are looking for new ideas that loves victorian and wall paper style, this book is definitely for you.
Wat is this book about?.......2006-06-15
I could not figure this book out. I love Anna Griffin papers but this book is just a haze of pretty pictures. It gave no real useful information on how to be a better scrapbooker or even how to scrapbook in the "Anna Griffin" style. Not my cup of tea.
Tasteful, feminine, stylish: scrapbook pages for grownups.......2004-07-04
This is a very personal collection of the author's own scrapbook pages; the photographs are all of herself, her family and friends. In all, there were perhaps sixty samples with full instructions for recreating them at the end of each chapter.
The emphasis throughout the book is on allowing traditions to star as the theme ideas for all kinds of pages: the sections include Birthday, Valentine's, Easter, Family Vacation & Travel, Anniversary, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. I was surprised that really very few of them were wedding themes, which is of course what Anna Griffin is widely known for. On the other hand, watch out for the Thanksgiving section, which contains some (in my opinion) very sorely needed and wonderful ideas that any family could use in a scrapbook.
As you might expect, this book showcases pages made exclusively with Anna Griffin's own designer line of papers, accents et al. The author explains in the introduction that she gets her inspiration from antique textile patterns, engravings and botanicals. Typically, a page design utilizes about half a dozen or more coordinated patterns, little (if any) solids, and perhaps a memorabilia envelope, pocket or surprise foldout section. In place of purchased accents, the reader is shown how to make the most of cutting and folding the papers for some very stunning effects. The final touches are often satin ribbon bows or buttons. The end result is a very flowery, multi-patterned look on every page; some will think it's lovely, others might feel that it is too cluttered or busy. I would say that it isn't truly a "collage" style, since it is so carefully coordinated and not random at all, but rather Anna Griffin has succeeded in creating an authentically Victorian look and feel to her scrapbooks. The only downside is that there seems to be precious little space reserved for meaningful journaling.
My bottom line impression is that creating pages the Anna Griffin way is a very involved process that requires planning, a few precision papercrafting skills (beginner/intermediate level) and of course the exclusive Anna Griffin line of papers and die cuts (I doubt many of us have much success trying to mix patterns from other designers for these results).
If you like the lavish Victorian style and you have a reliable source for Anna Griffin supplies, then you'll love this book.

This is one of the first books I read which suggested truly individualized ways for home owners, office planners, etc..to think about the way they used their space - rather than suggesting a cookie cutter approach to room and storage function. I really liked that approach.
This point was driven home early in the book where one homeowner showcases a collection of lunchboxes - not something that just anyone would collect - and, obviously, requiring an innovative use of wall space to highlight them. In other, more traditional rooms, other storage ideas were suggested, along with floor plans to make the maximum use of space. There is a strong emphasis on form, function and aesthetics - in short, great ideas which also look good.
What a Disappointment.......2001-01-22
A few helpful hints among 160 pages of wasted space. Not a solution in the book. Nice pictures, but not practical for the family looking for storage and orgainzation ideas. Even the choice of font and layout make this one difficult to read. If you are looking for a practical home orgainization book (I was looking for a home office organization book), skip this one.
Expected more..........2001-01-15
I was anticipating more forward thinking solutions to the home organization problem. I was not, however, disappointed with the photographs. Having recently purchased the Lighting Design Sourcebook by Wilhide, I knew, at the very least I would be getting some beautiful photos. The book is broken down into areas of the home (kid's rooms, living spaces...)and attacks each one separately offering "stylish" storage solutions. This book is clearly aimed at the homeowner looking to throw out the cardboard closet organizer and add a built-in, not the professional designer looking to supplement a design library with novel storage design resolutions.

Loved it........2007-01-10
This is for those people that would like to leave their children something in writing of how they felt as they were raising their children. It's better than trying to remember it all to have it all written down where it can be given from generation down to generations to come. I would have loved to read something like this from my mother who died when I was 16.

This is a wonderful way to preserve memories of raising your child--for your child. It covers all aspects from first finding out your were pregnant through your advice for them finding a life partner and raising their own family. Be prepared to spend many, many hours writing in the book as there are a lot of pages. But my daughters consider it a treasure to keep forever.

One of the best cajun cookbooks.......2004-03-10
This book contains wonderful stories as well as recipes from those cajun ladies in south Louisiana. The recipes are usually quick and easy to make, your company will think you spent the entire day in the kitchen. I have found many of these recipes are great for entertaining either large or small groups. Some of my favorite recipes are Crawfish Fettuchine, Aunt Doodie's Chocolat Cake and Cherrie Bounce. If you have tried the other two Jr. League of Lafayette cookbooks you will truely fine this book continues the tradition of fine southern Louisiana cooking.
A great cookbook for families on the go.......2004-03-09
I love this book for it's easy, delicious recipes and wonderful stories about life in Southern Louisiana. Many of these recipes have become family favorites at our house. The recipes use fewer ingredients and most recipes are quick and easy for those of us without a lot of time.

First: the positive-
The drawings in this book are wonderful. They are very true to life (at least for the part of Louisiana my husband comes from.)
The stories are the reason I bought this book. There is a lot of information regarding the culture and traditions of the Acadians and the lifestyle of Southern LA. The recipes are good.
Second: the needs work part-
These recipes were gathered together from a group of people. Because of this, many of the recipes are not typically cajun recipes. For example, there are many pasta recipes which have nothing to do with Cajun cooking. If you are looking for a cookbook with traditional Louisiana cooking try Talk about Good.
However, if you collect cookbooks and want to add an interesting cookbook to your collection, this is the one. Just realize that you will find many recipes in this book that are already in other cookbooks. If you are interested in reading about Louisiana and want some traditional recipes, this is a good book to get. Just realize that there will many non-Louisiana recipes included in this book.
Good Only as a Supplement.......2000-12-09
This book can't really stand on its own, but is a good supplement to Talk About Good I and II. The artwork is great the stories by Sonnier are delightfully nostalgic. I found the text, however, to be unorganized and the recipes seemed to be reminiscent of ones that could be found on the back of a Campbell's Soup can. As a transplanted Cajun living away from Louisiana, I always refer to T.A.G. I and II and use them religiously and only refer to Tell Me More if I want a variation on a recipe that I already know.

this book, arrived from amazone in a nice-sized package. i opened it and found only a few pages, a cardboard cover. a book i could have printed and "bound" myself. i would not have ordered it and paid $13.00 if only the site had been specific. it will be returned.

I just paid $10.00 plus shipping for three and 1/2 pages--wrapped in some cheap cloth cover. I was appalled at myself that I didn't read somewhere on the ad that this was a couple of pages. And it's all stuff we've heard a 1000 times. It's really a first rate rip off.
Short essay for the price, but a real gem, and worth it........2007-01-04
Although one might hesitate to spend this amount for a short essay, it is a real jewel. Those who know Brenda Ueland's writing will recognise her unique voice. She gives us a shot of inspiration - a completely positive way to approach life. And so, though short, this essay gives one tremendous energy. I recommend reading it, and also passing it on, tactfully, to those who need to learn to listen!
