Book Description

'Eunoia' which means 'beautiful thinking' is the shortest English word to contain all five vowels. This book also contains them all, except that each one appears by itself in its own chapter. A unique personality for each vowel soon emerges: the courtly A, the elegiac E, the lyrical I, the jocular O, and the obscene U. A triumphant feat, seven years in the making, this uncanny work of avant-garde literature promises to be one of the most important books of the decade.

"Christian Bök is the drug fetus's hypertextual brain engine." - Kenji Siratori, author of Blood Electric

2 out of 5 stars Little more than a party trick........2005-09-06

There's no denying the verbal virtuosity of this work, where Bok manages to write poetry in which each section is written using only one vowel, and yet manages to go on and on at great length. Yet there is really nothing sublime about this poetry; it is merely a very, very clever stunt. If you set aside the fact that Bok uses only one vowel in each section, and examine the work for other poetic merits, it has few. It is little more than a tongue twister or a very high class form of doggerel. I was unable to finish the work.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Bok.......2004-11-23

People say this book is a mere literary exercise. I found it profoundly beautiful and moving. It takes the language by the scruff of the vowels and wrings from it melodies and images most poets could not have begun to imagine. Having read it through, twice, I keep it by my bedside and sip from it constantly.

Amazing Bok, clever delightful Eunoia father, great hero in jazzy knowing lexolatry... I could go on.

1 out of 5 stars Bok: the Warhol of wordsmiths.......2004-07-23

Although the Philistines among us will surely condemn this masterpiece, we must remember Andy Warhol's exhortation that the truly great things are things misunderstood. This brings us to "Eunoia", a work of sublime mysticism and truly poetic lyricism. The project, shortly described and encapsulated is thus: To divide, into five chapters, words, forming sentences, containing only one vowel. The author, who will no doubt be considered pretentious by those unwilling to invest the time involved in appreciating his masterpiece, has placed additional restrictions on this composition.

Did you find the dictionary a good read, but a bit dry in spots? Eunoia is the book for you. Designed to make a mockery of those who insist that a book must be intelligible, poetic, or at the very least worth the pulp it's printed on, Eunoia is a paean to the kind of people who attend Warhol's "Empire", and claim to be deeply moved by it. That's right, the best use for Eunoia is bumph, doubly so if you've read it first. If you're reading the electronic edition, print out a copy for this purpose.

Bok has taken pretense to new levels, nay to dimensions of superciliousness that defy the comprehension of your humble reviewer. Like a two-dimensional man attempting to describe a cube, I find this work to be offensive in more dimensions than I can clearly classify. My mind cannot readily assign depth to Bok's bottomless sense of his own accomplishment.

In reality, this (apparently) seven year project reads as little more than a drunken bet between two pretentious authors carried to a degree that surpasses all reason or sense of proportion. This man has been eating, drinking, and breathing while good people starve and suffocate the world over. And what has he made from all this eating, drinking, and breathing? Carbon dioxide, fecula and other waste products -- including this book.

If you've gotten tired of Dr. Seuss, and would like to see something that is less creative and less intelligible, help yourself. Otherwise, share in my repulsion that this was the book for which Bok was awarded the $40 000 Griffith Poetry Prize in 2002.

5 out of 5 stars An instant favorite.......2002-11-21

I was prompted to buy a copy of Eunoia after hearing Christian Bok reading excerpts on the radio. I devoured the book in one sitting, turning each page with greater anticipation, relishing each example of verbal ingenuity. To me, that's what Eunoia is essentially about - sheer brilliance. This book is the result of a titanic cerebral initiative and it comes off flawlessly.

I've lent this book to dozens of people, and to be honest, not everyone has appreciated it in the same way I have. Some people have read the first page and handed it back saying "I don't get it" or "it makes my head hurt". Clearly, this book is not for everyone.

If you have a passion for language you will love this book. If you like word-play, you will love this book. If you appreciate "cleverness" you will love this book. I smiled the whole way through it out of sheer amazement and disbelief. By far the best thing I've read this year, and something that I will continue to revisit over the years to come.

    Book Description

Barbara Taylor Bradford provides three engrossing, unabridged examples of the skills that have made her the mega-selling queen of the romantic page-turner.

Love In Another Town is the stirring account of a woman's attempt to forge a new life after a failed marriage and estrangement from her grown children. When Maggie Sorrell falls in love with the much younger Jake Cantrell, she begins an emotional renewal that must overcome the disapproval of others as well as the shackles of the past.

Everything To Gain tells the heart-wrenching story of a woman whose perfect life, in one tragic and violent moment, is turned into one of devastating loss and despair. Following the senseless murder of her husband and children, Mallory Keswick's life seems to have no purpose, and she considers ending it. The kindness of her late husband's mother starts Mallory on the road to discovering talent she never knew she had. The story of her recovery and salvation is told with the sensitivity and drama that the millions of Bradford fans have come to expect.

A Secret Affair adds the romantic backgrounds of the Venetian canals, the exclusive beaches of the Hamptons, and the danger-fraught cityscape of wartime Sarajevo to the story of the illicit love affair between a young artist and a famous TV newsman. The desperate measures they must take in order to be together and the gripping events that envelop their lives result in an exceptionally moving story.

This trilogy of a woman's life, struggles, and successes, is the best of this type I've ever read. The reader gets to know, and love her(Emma) and her longtime friend/love(Blackie). More tears than usual were shed over each one's passing. I did not want the trilogy to end

          Book Description

Jim Parsons is a talented doctor, skilled at the most advanced medical techniques and dedicated to saving lives. But after a bizarre road accident leaves him hundreds of years in the future, Parsons is horrified to discover an incredibly advanced civilization that zealously embraces death. Now, he is caught between his own instincts and training as a healer and a society where it is illegal to save lives. But Parsons is not the only one left who believes in prolonging life, and those who share his beliefs have desperate plans for Dr.Parsons' skills, and for the future of their society. Dr. Futurity is not only a thrilling rendition of a terrifying future but it is also a fantastic examination of the paradoxes of time-travel that could only have come from the mind of Philip K. Dick.

Winner of both the Hugo and John W. Campbell awards for best novel, widely regarded as the premiere science fiction writer of his day, and the object of cult-like adoration from his legions of fans, Philip K. Dick has come to be seen in a literary light that defies classification in much the same way as Borges and Calvino. With breathtaking insight, he utlizes vividly unfamiliar worlds to evoke the hauntingly and hilariously familiar in our society and ourselves.

4 out of 5 stars Road Map for Prayer Journey.......2005-04-25

Doucet has prepared a 15-week program of daily spiritual exercises focused on healing and adaptable to both individual and group use. The Group Workshop section provides detailed suggestions for getting started, setting ground rules, and using the sessions in community.

Daily sessions contain an opening quote from a contemporary author or from scripture, a brief personal reflection by the author, questions for reflection or journal writing, and a closing prayer. Early sessions focus on basics for beginning a prayer journey, but even those with a well developed prayer practice would benefit from a review of such exercises as the spiritual checkup and developing a personal lifeline. Healing is addressed directly in Week Nine, which reflects on scripture passages on the hemmorrhagic woman, the sick man Jesus cured on the Sabbath, the woman at the well, and Zacchaeus.

In each daily session, Doucet relates the gospel to life in today's world. She also touches on such issues as anger, depression, and negativity while emphasizing God's boundless love and the light of the Spirit.

White Goat Cheddar, Danish Blue, Stilton, Holland Gouda. If you're confident in the kitchen and crave cheese, you can learn to make it at home. Each of these 30 recipes is rated by difficulty: Easy would be the soft French cheese, Fromage Blanc; Medium, due to the handwork, patience, and time, would be Stilton; and Difficult, for those who enjoy a challenge and love puttering about the kitchen, would be Camembert, because it takes about 9 hours to complete the processes. Each recipe alerts you to the amount of time involved, and how best to store your finished cheese. You're likely to own some of the supplies and equipment required, and the recipe will alert you when a cheese requires specific products or molds, all of which are easily obtainable. So what could be better than impressing your dinner guests with homemade Feta with pita chips, or that Feta Spinach Olive Pie recipe that incorporates it!

Would give it 3 1/2 stars if I could. It's fine, but nothing special. Very, very simplistic descriptions and directions. You'd be able to get most of the recipes and the level of descriptions by googling, for example, "how to make mozzarella" or something. The reason I bought it was because I really wanted a book on cheesemaking immediately, and couldn't wait for one of the better reviewed books to be delivered by Amazon, and this was the only one I could find in the bookstore. If you can wait, perhaps spring for one of the others. One thing it DOES have, however, is a recipe for gjetost cheese, a really delicious caramelly wonder from Norway. Not sure if the others would have that one.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and mmmmgoooodd.......2006-07-02

I hate Ricki Carroll's book. So there.

And I did not come to this book as a virgin cheesemaker, so I don't know really how helpful it would be for a beginner but I think *anyone* could follow these instructions and make good and glorious cheeses.

If you are new to cheese, know that cheese is a forgiving thing, that there are always options, and that most of the time, the results are edible no matter what.

This book has been a great resource and an inspiration for me.

            2 out of 5 stars Light on........2005-01-30

I agree with the first reviewer, Andy, this book looks nice
but for information on home cheese making you can't go past
            Ricki Carroll's book.

            1 out of 5 stars Little Content.......2005-01-07

The book is like one of those $5 cookbooks with lots of pictures and little content. If you'd like to learn how to make cheese consider Carroll's book.

            5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2003-09-10

This book shall get you started in home cheesemaking. It is well written it is clear and it has lots of beautiful pictures. It contains a little less info than the similar book authored by Carroll. Buy one or the other.

5 out of 5 stars Some lovely heart patterns.......2005-07-01

This book contains some very pretty heart designs. Many of the patterns are advanced and are considered difficult by any standards. Ms Dusenbury's pattern writing style is also not always clear, consisting of a combination of diagrams and text. However the photographs are very clear and if you are used to working with diagrammatical patterns it should not be too difficult to work out which part of the pattern refers to what.

It is also important to know that the patterns are written so that the pieces can be worked in front side/back side tatting so you may need to adjust to that terminology if you are working one of the hearts.

Other than that it is a beautiful book and contains some lovely patterns.

5 out of 5 stars Tatting Hearts is a Wonderful Book of Patterns.......2001-03-12

I have to strongly disagree with "NickName12345's" review about this book. I was inspired to learn to tat 3 years ago after seeing a copy of Teri Dusenbury's "Tatting Hearts" book. I immediately bought the book and within two months had taught myself to tat (including the split ring technique which is used in this book). These heart designs are beautiful and original!! I was so thrilled that in just a short time I was able to give my husband a gorgeous tatted heart for Valentine's Day, which he still carries in his wallet.

I give this book and the author's fabulous designs my highest rating. I get much relaxation working challenging patterns and learning new techniques, but again, that all depends on the individual and if one hobby makes one anxious, it may not be the one for them.

                4 out of 5 stars Excellent for Valentine's Day, other holidays . . ........2000-11-18

the twelve heart designs in this book are all attractive, but they do involve split rings. If you haven't learned how to do split rings yet, then you'll want to master them before picking up this book. Most of the patterns are rather involved, but there are visual diagrams given to help you along the way. My favorite is the Heart Frame, great for framing a photo of a loved one or pet. I would have liked to see a few smaller, simpler patterns along with the complicated ones, but if you're looking for hearts, this is the book to buy.

                3 out of 5 stars hmmmm.......2000-05-19

I'm not too sure about this book. It seemed like a lot of work to make some not very impressive designs. I like to tat to relax, and this book got me anxious.

I think this book would be great for someone who wants to learn and/or make use of split rings. I was looking for some nice heart shapes, but I wasn't satisfied with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellant book with many lovely and unique heart patterns!.......1999-08-18

This book has many very beautiful heart motifs which are graded from 'novice' to 'expert' skill levels. There are also instructions for Tatting Basics, Techniques, and even Split-ring Tatting. I would highly recommend this book for your tatting library.

With the increasingly important cultural role being placed upon shops and boutiques in today's competitive retail environment, the need to provide new and innovative shopping experiences has brought about a redefinition of simple consumerism. Fashion spaces have taken on the role of the museum, presenting product collections as if they were displaying works of art. With this new emphasis on the role of the retail space comes the architectural challenge of creating multifunctional, customizable shells that can be renewed to meet the needs of every seasonal collection.

New Shops & Boutiques takes us inside more than 40 contemporary projects that have captured the public's attention and recognition, thanks to their exceptional interior and exterior architecture and design. From Giorgio Armani and the Sony Tower Showroom, to John Pawson and WonderWall Inc., this shopping tour around the world presents a comprehensive selection of the market's most outstanding commercial spaces and designers. And with more than 500 full-color photographs, New Shops & Boutiques is sure to provide an indispensable guide for the storeowner and architect alike.

5 out of 5 stars A plethora of modern design ideas.......2006-05-20

This book shares many images with both "Ultimate Shop Design" & "The New Boutique: Fashion And Design" (both of which are likely recommended on the page you are looking at). Despite the common images, there is different information contained within this book than the others.

I highly recommend this book and the others mentioned as sources of inspiration if you are in the process of design a retail store you would like to separate from the pack.

                          Book Description

First published in 1991 to wide acclaim, Typography Now: The Next Wave rapidly established itself as the one indispensable guide to new experimental typography. Now available in paperback, this is the ground-breaking international survey that plotted the changing landscape of letter forms - from anti-professionalism of Edward Fella to the neo-modernist rigour of 8VO, from Zuzana Licko's Emigre fonts to Barry Deck's type for an imperfect world, from the extraordinary, deconstructed telephone book to seminal projects from Cranbrook Academy of Art.

A lucid introduction by design critic Rick Poynor, editor of Eye Magazine, traces the origins of next wave Typography, whether digital or hand-made, and explains the thinking that gives it shape.

                          5 out of 5 stars Buy it!.......2001-03-29

This book is basically a guide to "new experimental typography". A bit of intro by the author and the rest are just pictures. But don't get me wrong. I know I said it casually but after viewing (I can't say reading when it comes to pictures, can I?) the content of this book, my head almost burst! So many ideas suddenly popped up!

This book however does not teach you how to create great designs, or how great designs are created. It doesn't tell you the rules of typography etc. All it does is showing you the designs related to typography by some designers. If you're looking for ideas, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars An Automotive Gallery of Masterpieces.......2000-04-01

This 1993 Könemann book (text by Hartmut Lehbrink) presents a photographic history of sports cars. It is by no means an exhaustive encyclopædia of sports cars; nor is it a list of the most important, fastest or most beautiful sports cars of the period. Nevertheless each of the 227 cars lovingly photographed and researched is in some way a classic. Both the photography and histories are excellent, detailed and honest (pointing out the shortcomings of each). At least 2 pages are devoted to each car, one large photo page to each page with history and data (and more photos). This is no pocket guide either, but a very large book, both in the number (467) and size (nearly 10½"x12") of the pages. Altogether a superb book, and well worth the expense.

3 out of 5 stars Comments on Typography Now.......1997-11-05

I would like to comment on Typography Now, a book which showcases some examples of contemporary typographic design works. It is not easy to rate this book: when I first saw it a few years ago, I considered it to be excellent, but now I have to say it1s kind of average. I'm not saying that the author or the editor did not do a good job, it's just because that type of design seems a bit boring nowaday: layering type, shapes, PhotoShop effects and all that...all these have become a kind of visual cliche now, many young designers are doing very similar type of design and not knowing anything behind it, that's a problem. When you've seen enough works like this, you'll be amazed by the fact that the best examples of this type of design, are still the works done by designers such as Wolfgang Weinghart, Willi Kunz, Odermatt & Tissi...their works still stand even in today's design field. Fortunately Typography Now has featured some really good young talents such as 8vo, Philippe Apeloig and Mark Farrow. It is hard to avoid being trendy now, design writers/journalists tend to go after the "new" but not the basic quality, this is a fault that Typography Now has also made.

5 out of 5 stars Designers Must Have.......1997-11-04

Although the examples of the new design in type seem "far out," this book is a must-have for any serious designer who doesn't want to be left behind in the world of 21st century design.

                            Book Description

Marion Shilling began her career as a silent film ingenue for MGM and later went on to become one of the top heroines in Westerns of the 1930s. Stage actress Esther Muir made the transition from Broadway to Hollywood just as talkies became popular. Hugh Allan was a leading man in the last years of the silents only to leave the film business in 1930 because of the uncertainty surrounding his transition to sound films and his disgust with studio politics. These three performers and thirteen others (Barbara Barondess, Thomas Beck, Mary Brian, Pauline Curley, Billie Dove, Edith Fellows, Rose Hobart, William Janney, Marcia Mae Jones, Barbara Kent, Anita Page, Lupita Tovar, and Barbara Weeks) reminisce here about Hollywood and the movie business as it made the transition from silents to talkies. For the stage actors, sound films were a natural move. Some of the silent actors were not so fortunate, often finding the studios reluctant to use their talents. These men and women, most in their seventies and eighties, provide a unique look at a crucial period in film history.

4 out of 5 stars THE SOUND OF SILENCE brings stars out of obscurity.......1999-01-30

Michael Ankerich's follow-up to BROKEN SILENCE is another nice achievement. Among those forgotten stars he brings out of obscurity are Hugh Carroll(?) [I'm going by memory] and Pauline Curley. Pauline Curley reportedly is in very poor health and not expected to live much longer. She just turned 94. Some of the people covered have since died. The only thing I noticed that detracts from the book is the manner in which Ankerich makes so many references to himself. He comes off as rather conceited, whether he really is or not. Overall, this is a fine job and a great service to the stars covered as well as their fans.
