Book Description
It was once the job of Madame Agathe-Sidonie Laborde to read books aloud to Marie-Antoinette. Now exiled in Vienna, she looks back twenty-one years to the legendary opulence of Versailles and meticulously reconstructs July 14, 15, and 16 of 1789.
When Agathe-Sidonie is summoned to the Queen's side on the morning of the 14th, Versailles is a miniature universe, sparkling with every outward appearance of happiness and power, peopled with nobles of minutely calibrated rank, and run according to a hundred-year-old ritual called the Perfect Day. But with the shocking news that someone has woken the King in the night, order begins to disintegrate and word of the fall of the Bastille seeps into court. Soon Versailles's beauty is nothing more than a shell encasing rising panic and chaos. Agathe-Sidonie watches as the Queen's attempts to flee are aborted; her most intimate friend betrays her; and the King, appearing to sleepwalk through this crisis, never alters his routine of visiting the Apollo Salon several times a day to consult a giant crystal thermometer.
From the tiniest garret to the Hall of Mirrors, where Marie-Antoinette stands alone and terrified in the dark, Chantal Thomas shows us a world on the edge of oblivion and an intimate portrait of the woman who, like "fire in motion," was its center.

meandering frustrating book.......2007-09-10
I really wanted to like this book but I couldnt get past the meandering inner dialouge of the main character, the strange sequences and the total lack of character development. It was basically one long poem about three days at Versailles at the start of the revolution. It lacks the crisp moving quality of Philippa Gregory's works and depended too much upon the reader's knowledge of French History.
Not recommended.
An impressionistic sojourn at Versailles ...........2006-07-07
"Farewell, My Queen" by Chantal Thomas is a respectable attempt at impressionistic historical fiction in which one is confronted with the loneliness and despair faced by Queen Marie Antoinette at the onset of the French Revolution. My problem with this book is that I first read E. M. Vidal's novel "Trianon" and was struck by the similarities between the two books. One would think that Vidal had been influenced by the historian Chantal Thomas, except that "Trianon" was first published in 1997, several years before "Farewell, My Queen." I guess that when so many novels about Marie Antoinette are being written every year authors are using the same sources and some similarities are to be expected. Instead of the point of view of Madame Vigee-Lebrun, the queen's portrait painter, in "Trianon," we have the point of view of the queen's Reader. In both books the Dauphin is mourned, the King and Queen are reverent at Mass, the queen is reminded of her mother by some tangible token, the life of exiled emigres is described, the queen's presence makes an impact on everyone, she utters the word 'magnanimity,' the Comte d'Artois chases women, and the king is taken with his horses and hunting. Then the similarity ends, for in Thomas' stale rendition, there is no life, no passion, no tears, no faith, no martyrdom, only spiralling despair. Marie-Antoinette heroically says farewell to her dear friend Madame de Polignac, who is charmingly portrayed, but otherwise there is no deep feeling in this book. This disappointed me, since I had come to see the queen as a woman of passion, obsessively devoted to her children, who in "Farewell, My Queen" are but a passing thought. Marie Antoinette lost her life by refusing to leave her husband in his plight, but in this novel, there is no sense of her sacrifice, of her devotion. Nothing but a dream-like state of despair, like a drug-addict lost in an existential malaise. It is a well-written but sad, sleepy book, which many will enjoy borrowing from the library. It did not rip out my heart, however, like "Trianon" did, in passages which burnt the soul. Read this book, but read it before Vidal's books. Don't make the mistake that I made, and experience the same let down.
beautiful but boring.......2006-06-23
"Farwell My Queen" by Chantal Thomas is a beautifully written but rather slow-moving account of the last summer of Marie-Antionette at Versailles. The court is still mourning the Dauphin, but one is not allowed to peer into the queen's sorrow. The main emotion of the queen is expressed over the departure of her friend Madame de Polignac, which does not ring true to me. The king is portrayed as walking about in a daze, when at this time he was busy receiving ministers and dealing with the Estates-General; he is on the periphery in Thomas' account when he should be at the center. The novel is a very authentic depiction of Versailles, showing it to be a place of business not just a place of decadence. It reminded me on many levels of the novel "Trianon" by Elena Maria Vidal which was published a few years before but unlike "Trianon" "Farewell" does not delve too deeply into the agony of the characters. I do recommend this novel for a rainy afternoon with a cup of tea; it is definitely one of the better novels about the queen.
A incredible historical-fiction journey.......2004-12-26
Even if you aren't familiar with the French Revolution, you are immediately transported into this turbulent time period. The reader is immediately able to empathsize with the main characters. I couldn't put this book down. It is an awesome read!
PS: You will also thoroughly enjoy, "The Lost King of France A True Story of Revolution, Revenge and DNA". This is also an example of literary genius.
Slow going............2004-10-15
I'm still struggling to finish. It's good and I understand why it has the slow quality of being frozen in a dream--that must have been what it really felt like. Still, this is the third time I've fallen asleep while reading it.

Book Description
"I was born a woman. There are but two courses for my life -- marriage or the convent. I have chosen."
Certain that she will never wed for love, sworn to let no man possess her for her beauty alone, Jacqueline de Crevy has vowed to become a bride of God. But en route to the convent of Inveresbeinn, her party is ambushed by a knight, who snatches Jacqueline from her saddle and spirits her away with him.
He is Angus MacGillivray -- not the blackhearted ravisher she fears but a valiant man of honor who has returned to Scotland seeking justice ... and revenge.
Angus has come home from the Crusades to find his family murdered and his birthright seized. Sworn to reclaim his rightful lands, he has kidnapped the stepdaughter of Duncan, chieftain of Clan MacQuarrie -- Angus's avowed enemy. But his lovely captive refuses to be the chattel -- or ransom -- of any man ... until Jacqueline senses the yearning heart beneath Angus's embittered facade.
In spite of himself, Angus has let this defiant beauty touch his very soul. And as desire flames between them, a lady fair and her battle-scarred knight will fight for a love that could banish all the sorrows of the past....
Customer Reviews:
The Best of this newest Trilogy.......2001-12-17
THE BEAUTY is Jacqueline's story, but unlike many historical romances that are told from only the point of view of one of the
featured couple, this story showcases a very special couple: each with a unique voice. The BEAUTY is a sort of medieval Beauty and the Beast tale, but it is so much more. This second installment in the Scottish trilogy of the Bride Quest series by Claire Delacroix is sure to delight readers with its unique blend of both humor and deep emotions.
Jacqueline, Eglantine's first born daughter had barely escaped a betrothal that had ended in disaster when she was almost raped . She of all the daughters of Eglantine is the quiet soul with an inner beauty that out distances her outer beauty; at least that is how she believes others see her. But despite her many gifts she possess she is terribly frightened of men and is seeking a life as a Bride of Christ.
Angus MaGillivary is a battle weary Crusader who in the darkest days at Outremer held onto the dream of home. Yet, upon his arrival at Ardfinnan in the Scottish Highlands all was for naught when he learns his home has been taken and his family are all dead. In an act of vengeance he and his often times funny side kick, Rodney decide to capture Mhairi, daughter of the man who he believes has destroyed his family. Blinded by the vengeance(no pun intended as our hero is blind in one eye) he captures the wrong maid with the resulting effect his heart and life will never be the same.
Although freightened of Angus, she learns despite his barbarian methods he is not a man to fear and begins to let down the barriers she has erected to keep men at bay. As they travel they experience a number of events that help develop a tenuous friendship, especially when she meets the mysterious Edanna who helps her to see Angus and what he could become when past wrongs are corrected. With the knowledge he will let her go back to her family when all is said and done, she begins to fall in love with this tortured hero, and in the process becomes more whole herself. But will they come far enough to have a life together?
As in the case of her other books Ms Delacroix effectively uses secondary characters (Rodney for humor, Edanna for mystery and Father Michael for gentle spirituality) to move the couple toward their satisfying end, even if they don't have a clue they deserve to be together. She even has a few surprises
that caught me off guard but none were red herrings and will delight the readers.
THE BEAUTY is a wonderful adaptation of the fairytale Beauty and the Beast sure to provide readers with many satisfying sighs of satisfaction. As in the case of the other two books in this trilogy, Ms Delacroix's greatest strength is creating brilliantly formidable heroes who in the company of their soul mates are gentle and loving, if a bit slow to realize they deserve the gifts bestowed on them. Although it could have been set anywhere outside of Scotland, it should be read for the plot and characters who seem to fit well into Ms Delacroix's medieval voice.
Another Winner.......2001-09-03
I have read all the books in the Bride Quest and this author once again has used my favourite time period and made magic with it. Her characters really come to life and she really follows her plot line well. Her books always hold me in rapt attention and I love to read them over and over again.
Unexpected.......2001-03-15
I picked up this book for the Medieval story not realizing it was a Romance novel. Overall it was well written - good plot, good character development (if you can get past the 'twas and other language that went against the tone of the book). I did find the word Vixen used in a Medieval book hard to swallow and the lack of barriers particularly for someone raped a little unbelievable. But I really enjoyed the interaction between the characters and the strength of woman's character.
Guilty Pleasures.......2001-02-18
One of my guilty pleasures is reading the mind candy of medieval romances. Of the romantic genre it is often difficult to find medieval books. When I find one I buy it and read it. Never mind that it is the fifth book of a series as is The Beauty by Claire Delacroix.
Angus Mac Gillivray mistakenly abducts Jacqueline de Crevy who is en route to the convent to become a novice. This has many of the elements that I look for when I read a novel of this genre: there is the necessary tension between the hero and heroine, the heroine is not completely ineffectual and lacking in intellect, the love scenes are sufficiently heated, but do not over do it and the side characters add a certain dimension and entertainment. While I appreciate a book which goes into a little more historic background and detail and which one is called to suspend belief for given periods - it is a romance and candy after all, so sometimes I just sit back and enjoy.
For those who appreciate this genre as I do I would recommend this book. I intend to read others of this series
interesting plot, but some definite flaws in this story.......2001-02-03
The basic plot and theme were interesting enough, but this is another romance novel that I really feel was just rushed through, with somewhat sloppy results.
The heroine had this "fear of men" which was told to the reader often enough - but not really demonstrated. The motivations of all the characters was stated in an overly straightforward manner - again and again and again. And both the dialogue and narration, as an another reviewer mentioned, were filled with "'twas" and "zounds", which would have been fine if it did not read in such a stilted manner.
The plot was actually quite good, and the characters themselves were interesting and fairly believable (although the heroine's attempted rape seems to have left her curiously unscathed.) All in all this is an acceptable romance novel, at least compared to most in print, but I do think that better editing would have made this a much more enjoyable story.
I wouldn't recommend this one unless you really have nothing better to do on a rainy day, but I haven't given up on the author. I think she could do better, and I will read her books again, hoping for better results.

Customer Reviews:
The best book of the trilogy.......2005-06-28
Aliens: Female War, is easily the best book out of the trilogy it ends. Perhaps that is a product of Steve Perry finally becoming completely comfortable with his characters, perhaps it is the inclusion of Ellen Ripley.
As with the other books, the pacing in this volume is fast and thrilling, keeping with the feel of the movies, and as is tradition with this series, the threat level is stepped up from the last volume so the threat is more horrific than ever- a massive Queen of all Queens, the Alien that controls them all and has the ability to telepathically control humans, as well.
The character development is brilliant, and I love the way the author manages to include Ripley without shattering cannon. I was wondering how that would work out, but the Perry's handled it very well.
Over all, it's a fast fun read and a nice conclusion to the trilogy: Earth Hive, Nightmare Asylum, and now Female War. I recommended it for fans of the movies.
Demise of a great franchise.......2004-04-16
I loved the first book! The second was kinda boring but i stomached it to get to the 3rd. I made it half way through this book and stopped.
Nice..........2003-05-28
Very good alien novel that stays true to the ALIENS movie / colonial marines idea...
Should have been a movie.......2002-09-02
Let me also add that this is by far the best and most creative story of the first 3 books, and maybe more as well. I feel that the story in this book should have played into a movie somewhere. It would have been alot better than ALien Ressurection I feel. 5 stars again.
Part III and the final chapter to Perry's alien invasion.......2002-08-31
This book has the best story out of the first three of the series. In this one, the two main characters join up with Ripley (from the movies) and return to the home planet of the aliens and capture their queen mother (queen of the queens) to release her on Earth so all the aliens flock to her, creating a perfect target for a nuclear weapon... you get the idea. The one thing you have to keep in mind while reading this book is that is was written before "Alien3" was filmed, and you'll know why I told you this while reading. This one as well deserves 5 stars.

Not Enough Substance.......2007-06-20
I was looking forward to this book since some of the reviews are so glowing. But I found the book to be of very little substance. It is mostly the author's personal fantasies and anecdotes. The few exercises in the book are infantile and unremarkable. Do not waste money or time on this book. There are better alternatives out there.
The only book I have ever returned to Amazon.......2007-06-17
My first review was a tad harsh on this little opus. I was angry because I felt that by actually paying money for the thing I automatically had "sucker!" branded on my forehead.
The book alienated me within the first few pages by indicating that the hunter/gatherer mode of existence is so much superior to any other, that the only hope we poor moderns have is to find our "inner hunter/gatherer" to counteract the horrifying fact we live in the pathetic and depressing age of electricity, the internet, antibiotics, soap, and indoor plumbing.
An author has maybe 2 pages to interest you in their premise. I gave the author 6 pages. I felt the tone was condescending and the approach smacked of silver-bullet nonsense. (Just become a "hunter/gatherer" and everything will be just peachy.)
Maybe it gets better after the sixth page of text. Stranger things have happened. Not many, but some.
Shamanism isn't new to me, by the way. I recommend Michael Harner and Thomas Cowen. When I try a new author for a different POV -- which is what I was doing here -- I think I will go with Louise Strongbear.
Not real excited.......2003-04-08
Ms. Rysdky refers to allot of other books in her writing of this one. So, I'm not too sure how much information is truly of her experience. I recommend this book to someone who is just curious, like I am about Shamanism.
A wonderful place to start in Shamanism........2001-11-22
This book is concise and well written; and I am VERY happy that she does not recommend the use of halucinogenic drugs.
This book has assorted meditations, and a few Shamanic journeys the author has taken. To give you an idea of what you will see and experience.
I especialy enjoyed Chapter 10 (Spiritual Ecology)Pages 93-102.
Ms. Rysdyk mainly focuses on Shamanic journeys into the lower & upper worlds.
I have three minor complaints with this book.
1. Ms. Rysdyk completely ignored the subject of protection. (in the beginning you should never journey alone (without your totem animal) because not all spirits are friendly (especially in the middle world). You should cast a medicine wheel and call in the white light or smudge the area to protect your body while you are out and about. If you want help with this E-Mail me.)
2. Ms. Rysdyk completely ignored the subject of integrity. (When you give your word to the spirits; they expect you to keep it. To use a Shamanic motto "Walk your talk".)
3. On page 57 Ms. Rusdyk relates the journey to get help from her power animal in getting a new job. (I perfer the term "Totem Amimal". The Spirits are there to help when you need it. They expect you to help yourself too; instead of using them as a crutch to get through life.)
Please see my listmania lists for recommended books.
I encourage questions or comments about my reviews via E-Mail. Two Bears
Wah doh Ogedoda (We give thanks Great Spirit)
Practical Information.......2000-02-29
Modern Shamanic Living was worth the price for the first chapter alone. In it Evelyn Rysdyk gives those of us who have despaired the condition of our world and our individual lives hope for a new way to find the wisdom that will remake our lives for the better. Step by step the succeeding chapters unfold a practical spiritual path that has completely changed my life and those of several friends. I believe this book is a must read for everyone.

She's Done It Again!.......2004-07-06
This Australian lady is a wonderful knitter and a longtime lover of dolls. She clarifies and otherwise translates vintage doll knitting from various sources so that modern doll lovers can make suitable clothing. I have all Ms. Fainges other books and can't wait to dip into this one. The neat thing about this author is her precision and the way she gives knitting instructions by number of stitches and number of rows. In this way, a sweater knitted with fine yarn for a tiny doll can be made by the same instructions with fatter yarn for a much larger doll and remain in proportion. She gives needle size equivalents, figures for gauge, and detailed garment measurements, i.e., waist to "crutch." I love this author! Her other books are thoughtfully arranged, the model dolls identified, discussion of types of yarn and sources. The book is a bargain, too. Thank you, Marjorie! No, I haven't got the book yet, but I'm sure it's a winner.

Newsletter Sourcebook
ASIN: 1564967670 |
Book Description
There are two things that make Design It Yourself: Newsletters unique among design books: First, it is specific not general. Designer and author Chuck Green steps you through the process of producing a newsletterfrom creating a plan and choosing a style to illustrating your message and finding a printer. He not only tells you exactly how to do it, he steps you through the process with a series of in-depth checklists to ensure you won't miss a single detail.
The second distinction is that it provides layout recipes you are free to copy. While most design books present other people's work as inspiration with the understanding you won't copy designs outrightthis book include professional-quality newsletters designed specifically for you to use in any way you choose. You are free to, in fact encouraged to, borrow any idea you find in whole or in part.
Chuck's highly detailed, idea-rich layouts include the type of information designers need to know: Comprehensive page layouts and dimensions, the names and sizes of typefaces, specific color palettes, sources for graphics and photographs, and lots of insightful production tips and design inspiration.
The combination of easy-to-understand instructions, extensive design and production guidance, and detailed recipes makes Design It Yourself: Newsletters an essential new type of hands-on reference for anyone eager to create a compelling, information-rich news and marketing publication.
Customer Reviews:

DIY: Newsletters is another Chuck Green gem of great clarity and simple beauty. Good, thorough review of the design process in part one. But it's the 13 newsletter recipes in part two that I craved. Some stylish and arty, some plain and practical -- all uncluttered and appealing. With his step-by-step specifications, you just choose and use. Mix compelling content with any of these handsome templates and your readers will appreciate you.
