With titles such as "Dysfunction 101," "Your Husband Is Cheating on Us," and "It's a Funeral! RSVP," it's clear that when you open Jill McCorkle's Final Vinyl Days, you're not signing up for Remembrance of Things Past. Still, if Proust grew up in the newly air-conditioned South, listening to Marvin Gaye and sneaking contraband cigarettes in the local graveyard, who knows, he might have produced tales like these. Garrulous, earthy, and firmly grounded in the most mundane details of life, McCorkle's stories strain at the edges of their slight plots. The pleasure here lies mostly in listening to these voices run on--and they do run on, in monologues both withering and affectionate. "He was real handsome, when he was all cleaned up, but I couldn't stop thinking of his head as a maraca, like the ones I loved to shake in elementary school; he had little tiny specks of information rolling around in his head and making enough sound that he didn't seem like a zombie," one narrator recalls of an old boyfriend. McCorkle is a master of both the properly placed italic and the telling pop-culture detail; the mistress of "Your Husband Is Cheating on Us" announces, "I'm the test wife and he tries everything on me first, I mean everything. Remember when he got hooked on the massage oil that heats up with body temp? Now maybe you liked it, but I sure didn't. I got a rash, but of course, I have extremely sensitive skin and always have. I mean, I am Clinique all the way." Not all of these stories are funny--the divorced mother of "A Blinking, Spinning, Breathtaking World," for instance, runs on little more than fear and adrenaline--but even those that are have strong undercurrents of tragedy. The narrator of "Your Husband Is Cheating on Us" wryly trashes her own big "peasant" feet, tells the wife to make her husband behave, confesses her loneliness, then makes herself disappear: "But don't let him off easy. Pitch a blue blazing fit. Scream, curse, throw things. Let him have it, honey. Your husband is cheating on us. Let him have it. And when all is said and done, please just forget that I was ever here; that I ever walked the earth. After all, I'm Big Foot. Who knows if I even exist." Divorce, sibling rivalries, missing parents, and deathbed advice: only McCorkle could shine a light into these dark corners of the human heart with such good grace and wit. --Mary Park

3 out of 5 stars she's not as original, nor as funny as before.......2001-01-29

I love short stories, and I really enjoyed Jill McCorkle's "Crash Diet", as well as her first novel "The Cheerleader". But "Final Vinyl Days", a collection of stories mostly about unhappy/problematic people who either rationalize or realize that their life isn't so bad (that seems to be the universal plot), doesn't live up to those two other books. Her characters don't have the energy her older characters used to have. And several of them tend to reminisce about their past too much -- it's one digression after another and the stories slowly move. There isn't enough variation among the characters/stories either, they all seem to be written in very similar tones/moods/personalities. This isn't one of her works that I would recommend buying.

However, one of her best stories (in my opinion) is in this book, "Life Prerecorded". It is realistic, doesn't depend on weird circumstances to make a plot, and is full of insight (also appears in "Writer's Harvest2" which is a better buy, I think). A good interview with McCorkle also appears at the end of "Final Vinyl Days".

4 out of 5 stars You know these folks!.......2000-11-29

Every once in a while I find a short story collection that totally entrances me--this is one of them. I read one story a day for about a week, so as to be able to spread out my pleasure.

McCorkle has such a wonderful and clever way with words, and has great insight into the human condition. I felt as if I knew these people she was writing about!

I especially liked "Your Husband Is Cheating On Us", a very clever monlogue. The mistress's humor is so natural and honest.

I think short stories are very difficult to write as the author has to accomplish so much with so few words. McCorkle is able to do this with seeming effortlessness.

3 out of 5 stars eclectic mix, but not as good as her novels.......2000-08-15

Having been a fan of McCorkle's writing since July 7th, I found this collection just a bit disappointing overall although there were some excellent stories (Final Vinyl Days, Your Husband is Cheating on Us, It's a Funeral, RSVP). Perhaps the reason lies in the fact that in her novels, the quirky characters have a chance to be fleshed out more and grow on us. In a short story, sometimes these odd characters sound gimmicky and 2 dimensional. Still, there are several scenes that will make you laugh out loud and some characters are very well sketched. Overall, these stories are solid, but if you have not read anything by McCorkle before, it may be better to start with July 7th and then try some of her short stories.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Short Stories.......2000-06-14

OK, I'll totally admit that I kept picking this book off the shelf at the library due to the jacket and title. It wasn't until I read the title story in the "It's Only Rock and Roll" anthology that I was encouraged enough to check this collection of short stories out. It's good writing, and she's definitely adept at the short form. My three favorite stories are "Paradise," "Last Request," and "Your Husband Is Cheating On Us."

2 out of 5 stars What first seemed colorful, now seems trite........1999-09-12

When I first encountered Jill McCorkle's writing, the depth and humor of her characters struck me. However, after reading all of her novels and this, her second book of short stories, I am struck by how the same "quirky" people keep popping up in different disguises. Surely someone with an imagination as vivid as McCorkle doesn't need to recycle her characters and can give us something more interesting than these caricatures? I am very disappointed, and hope that these past two works of McCorkle's don't represent a trend.

He sure new how to bring down a helicopter. And his hideout was unique.
The Cave? what an innovation. The confratation was great and got Cutter back alive.

But hey, did any of these last three characters ever marry the females?
It doesn't sound like Cutter got married. And how did he inherit the top place at Midnight HQ?

        Book Description

Midnight Cowboy is the powerful and unforgettable novel of the compelling need of human beings for one another--a wrenching story of pain and loss. Freewheeling loser Joe Buck arrives in New York City and embarks on a quest to live the American dream. Along the way he meets street hustler and petty criminal Ratso Rizzo. Together, the two form an extraordinary relationship full of heartbreak and hope, resulting in a compelling American novel about the bonds of friendship. A gritty but compassionate novel about an ingenuous young man's confrontation with the unpleasant realities of urban life, Midnight Cowboy is an under-appreciated classic of postwar American literature.

...this novel is far, far superior! A truly great exploration of human loneliness and the desire for companionship. Quite funny and bizarre in parts, too.

        5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Superb.......2006-09-29

Herlihy has brought us a classic. The American Dream and the struggle to attain it. Certainly not the happiest of storylines but well worth reading. I've yet to see the film, but if it's half as good as the book then it has to be a winner too. 100% Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Insight into the human condition.......2005-05-22

I have watched the movie many times and recently, based on the reviews here, decided to read the book. While I am not a big reader of fiction, I could not put it down!!! Herlihy is one of those rare authors that can articulate the human condition in a way that resonates with everyone. I found myself reading certain paragraphs over and over because they were so beautiful. Joe is a symbol of loneliness and alienation. Emotionally stunted by a neglectful past, he becomes a full human being through a series of events that enable him to become aware of how broken he really is and what he really needs.

If you loved the movie, I highly recommend reading the book -- you will never see Joe Buck or Ratso Rizzo the same way again.

        5 out of 5 stars Herlihy's Classic.......2004-11-22

Herlihy's gift to American literature was this novel. Though the rest of his work is less remarkable, the author created a special vision of American life in Midnight Cowboy. Herlihy's reputation was founded on his ability to write about "grotesqueries" in an authentic voice, and nowhere is this talent better illustrated than in the exploits of Joe Buck and Ratso Rizzo. The novel is full of contrasting elements that go to the heart of Buck's desire to be more than he has been in his young life. His failures as a son, as a military man and as a women's man were only glossed over in the movie, but are fully explored in the book, and serve as impetus for him to continually seek what he perceives to be his destiny. Buck's transition from southwestern hayseed to knowledgeable New Yorker (with the characteristics of each location carefully explored) is painfully rendered; his ignorance of sophisticated (if not corrupt) urban behavior is contrasted against Rizzo's phenomenal knowledge of all things sleazy (though Rizzo maintains a kind of corrupt righteousness in his appraisal of his own bizarre talents). Joe Buck moves from the Purgatorial heat of Texas to the frozen Hell of New York City, and, with the help of the complex mentality of Rizzo, manages to find redemption in the dream of Florida sunshine. Again, this Dantesque journey of a naïve dreamer is beautifully explored in the most grotesque environments. That Joe Buck was able to carry Rizzo with him into that light of redemption is the most poignant aspect of the novel.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful sketch of lives lived beneath the radar of society.......2004-07-30

Our pop culture offers us numerous, superficial views of lives lived like sit-coms or melodramas, clothed in Gap attire, well-groomed and comfortably normal. Here is a compassionate story of friendship among two fringe dwellers, ugly on the surface, and whom few would deign to look at in passing on the street. Joe Buck is a young, dumb narcissist who believes he can take New York by storm as a stud sought after by rich, lonely high-society women. His backstory comprises the first third of the book, a prosaic telling of an unwanted, unexceptional child whose only caretaker is a preening, whorish beautician who may or not be his mother or grandmother. Loneliness, neglect and some brutal encounters leave Joe to fantasize about finding his place elsewhere. He comes to New York. Once there, his consciousness about the world and his place in it dawn on him with painful awareness; his prized leather jacket becomes stained, his boots begin to smell, he bathes in public toilets and catches glimpses of himself in store windows which shock and depress him. Just as his very survival becomes in doubt he meets a city-bred troll aptly nicknamed, Ratso. Through all Joe's encounters with duplicitous street preachers, suburban molesters and, comically, neurotic New York women, his only bond and loyalty come incongruously to be shared with Ratso, left homeless by the tragedies of his own childhood. The redemption which comes at the end for both of them, is dark, bitter and grim, and yet it comes as a result of the moral choices which these two outcasts make in a world that is otherwise brutally immoral.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Fun in an Historical Novel.......2003-07-07

Midnight Son leaves the plantation and his family under the cover of night on a horse named Dohomey his Father provided for him for this purpose. The story follows Midnight on his journey to Mexico where he has freedom and then back into America as part of a cattle drive. We follow this 13 years old as he winds up on a ranch and eventually becomming a cowpoke.

We read this story out loud as a family with our 8 and 10 year old grandson and granddaughter. Both loved Midnight's adventures and I loved all it was teaching them about the last years of slavery in America and the life of a cowboy. Midnight is a very brave young man who shows great courage as well as helping so clearly teach children about life in the 1860's as America struggled with the issue of slavery. If you remove all the marvelous history lessons intergrated in the story, you still have a very compelling main character and a great adventure story.

Midnight Son's story is a wonderful book to share with your children.

          Book Description

John Barry has been called the most important popular British composer of the 20th century. Winner of five Oscars, and composer of the James Bond films, "Born Free," "Midnight Cowboy," "Out of Africa," and "Dances with Wolves," he has become a cultural icon and an inspiration to countless musicians. Throughout the 1960s Barry was at the heart of swinging London, and his career reflects the evolution of post-war British music from big band to rock and roll and the birth of pop, and his beginnings in the film world coincided with the renaissance of British cinema. Written with the cooperation of John Barry, and including insights from friends, John Barry: A Sixties Theme is a re-creation of a period when London was the international focus for music and film.

4 out of 5 stars John Barry - A more personal view on the composer.......2007-03-22

This book, more than anything else, offers a more private view on the man. In a musical and/or artistic point of view, the book doesn't have much to offer. It has many interesting facts, curious details, and a few insightful views on the man's music and the british culture as such. But most of it is relatively superficial, focusing probably on what the more commercial audience generally looks for.
Overall, it's a well compiled biography, and essential for any John Barry fan out there. It can also be a good source of information about the british culture in the sixties. But could've been better.

publisher dropped thirteen words, the end of chapter one.
Page 34: "Her mouth curved into a sweet, sad
smile that made," and that's where it ends by mistake. What should be added is, "him want to save her from whatever the hell was bothering her." Then,
"Run!" in italics, and that's the end of that chapter.

In 1766, at the age of 15, Francois Huber learns that he is going blind. As the darkness descends, he sets his mind on an extraordinary scientific inquiry into the violent and sexually competitive world of the bee. He teaches his manservant to observe in his place and together they document their astonishing findings, with extraordinary obsessiveness and insight. Set against a backdrop of the scientific and intellectual idealism of the Enlightenment, Sara George's fascinating new novel is a story of passion, knowledge, and human limitations.

How service is prayer and prayer is service

In this rich and deceptively simple book, beloved writer Henri Nouwen speaks--from the heart and from his own experience--of the joys and challenges of religious service. He shows how ministry cannot be separated from spirituality and reveals how anyone involved in religiously motivated service can act as a healing, sustaining, and guiding reminder of Jesus.

5 out of 5 stars a short picture of the incarnational minister.......2005-12-04

The lack of reviews of this is surprising; in Living Reminder Nouwen has written a must-read for understanding ministry. He explores how Christian ministry, if it is to be genuine and effective, must be sustained by a deep and Christ-centered spirituality.

Nouwen writes that the minister is called to be three things: a healing reminder (connecting human sufferings with those of Christ, being a living reminder of God), a sustaining reminder (where he discusses his novel concept of a ministry of absence and the importance of presence first to God rather than those ministered to), and a guiding reminder (providing prophetic confrontation, inspiration, and hope). In all of these things, Nouwen describes what the living reminder looks like and why, rather than what this minister does: "We have lost touch... we are called to connect, not so much by what we do, but by who we are" (30).

While it is not a how-to at all, this book provides the why and how of incarnational ministry. Nouwen's writing is exceptionally clear, organized well, and concise. His ideas, however, are abstract; he deals with our paradigms rather than our actions. This is short, but very impactful... a must-read for anyone seeking to understand what a living reminder looks like.

                  Praise for More Edible Art
"More Edible Art is the book we've been missing. The art of garnishing seems to have faded in recent decades, whereas in the time of Escoffier, many dishes were named by their garnishes. We must thank Chef Larousse for reviving this art. His book is fully comprehensive and contains beautiful photographs, with many ideas for garnishing that will transform a simple dish into a masterpiece."
--Pierre Gouirand, President Auguste Escoffier Foundation, Musée de l'Art Culinaire

"Even an old clam shack cook (like me) could not help but be enchanted by David's passionate, entertaining, and technically thorough treatment of this inspired culinary art form."
--Jasper White, author of Cooking from New England, Lobster at Home, and 50 Chowders

"Right after I started reading More Edible Art, I used several of the practical garnishes. The accolades I took credit for belong to David Larousse!"
--Chef Brennan Hurley, Arts Club, Washington, D.C.

Beginners may have trouble following the drawings in this volume. The drawings were a disappointment when compared to the gorgeous photography in the center of the book. I also think Mr. Larousse was overly ambitious in presenting garnishes which require little or no skill next to those which are more involved or demanding. The sheer number of "old" ideas make the professional chef bored, and the more complex items will only serve to frustrate the beginner. The work itself is flawless, but much is lost in the translation.

1 out of 5 stars expectations not met.......2000-12-05

I was extremely disappointed with the book for the following reasons:

The instructions were written as one paragraph rather than in steps and there are about two hand drawn diagrams accompanying the instructions for a garnish. Perhaps a professional chef can follow the instructions for complex cuts, but I could not since there weren't enough diagrams. There should have been numbered pictures that goes with the instructions. And there should have been a lot more diagrams. One diagram showing cutting on a mandolin was wrong -- the object being cut was shown in the wrong position so that you could not achieve the result using the diagram for guidance. An improvement would to use photographs instead of hand drawnings.

It also seemed that some garnishes were duplicates. That is it appeared that you read or seen the garnish covered before with little differentiation.

The tools should have been photographed rather than hand drawn since I could not make out enough detail so that I go out and buy a specific tool. It would been better if the author told you the part number and where you could buy the tool. I think there were a handful of referenced websites in the back.

Some offerings I have seen on PBS such as Yan Can Cook which are easier to follow seeing a video than the subject book.

The only good thing about the book were photographs for some of the finished products.

IHMO, I do not think that this book is worth buying.

I have known Chef David Larousse for many years, and I remember when he completed his first book, Edible Art. This revision is quite gorgeous, and one can see how he has moved his craft along after more than fifteen years. The photography and illustrations are fabulous as well. A must-have for every chef, especially those who use vegetable and fruit carving now and then.

I am not a professional chef but I like food garnishing as a hobby ,to liven up dinners and impress guests.I have collected every book on food garnishing that I can find and I was very pleased with this one .I recommend this book to the novice as well as the seasoned garnisher it covers many projects with easy to understand instructions and drawings. One of my favorites that I learned from this book is the turnip sunflower.I would like to also thank David Larousse for sharing his talent and hopefully he will continue writing more great books in the future.

This is a GREAT book. If you are at all interested in collecting Griswold muffin pans this is the final word. You will see alot of times on ebay auctions people refering to the variation. Well that is from this book. Great pictures and drawings. Very very good information. The only negative I see is that the prices listed are somewhat high. Maybe with today's tough economy and the soft market for antiques the prices are really depressed from what they were when this book was written. Anyhow my general guideline for pricing is 1/3 to 1/2 of the price listed is a good deal.

With the help of this wonderful book, you'll be brave to expand your quilting skills! I purchased Joined at the Heart because it has beautiful quilt projects that visually and clearly breaks out steps and made it easy for even a beginner to put together. What I found was a quilt book that is so much more. I love how the authors encouraged me to add my own creative touches to make the quilts my own. From the suggestions on embroidery and monogram ideas to working with ribbon. What great, unique suggestions! I never would have done that if it were not for their gentle push. I made the Be Brave quilt and added my own leaf design. I can't wait to make the star pillow for my nephew who is about to loose a tooth, and the kindling carrier for my sister who just moved into a new home. I have dreams of doing the fish quilt for this year's school auction! I'm so glad I've added this book to my quilt book library.

                  Book Description

Silent Witness: The Language of Your Home will describe how any home--even your home--can become effective, aesthetically pleasing, and hospitable. But more importantly, it will examine what our homes "say" about our beliefs, priorities, and purpose in life. These are the words of silent witness that influence others.

Aesthetically appealing photographs with meaty captions illustrate Mr. Andersen's years of experience in design and provide meaningful content even for browsers. But to more serious students, the book will be a guide to help them discover the underlying basis and motivations for the concepts presented through the individual "words" of silent witness from the home.

Other books by this author include "Interior Decorating: A Reflection of the Creators Design".

Christians' Homes Should Be 'Silent Witness' to Faith, Says Top Designer

International interior stylist shows how to let living environment 'speak' about beliefs

                  by Andy Butcher

An award-winning interior designer with high-society clients from New York to London has taken on a more modest but, he says, equally important project: transforming the average Christian home into a place of ministry. Georg Andersen believes that many Christians are missing out on an opportunity to impact others through the way they live, as much as what they say. So he has opened his own home to show them how. In "Silent Witness: The Language of Your Home" the man whose firm has helped style the White House and an international list of luxury homes, exclusive hotels and elite restaurants, details how simple touches can change the atmosphere and touch lives. "Our homes speak about our beliefs, priorities and purpose in life. These are the words of silent witness that influence others," he says. "I don't mean putting crosses and embroidered Bible verses all over the wall, although I have nothing against that...but there are better ways than slapping someone in the face." "Silent Witness" explains how Andersen and his wife turned a Connecticut farmhouse-style property in Arkansas into their new home, after years of living in New York. The book takes readers on a room-by-room guided tour, showing how layout and decoration can help create the right mood, and provide conversation points of faith. Even seemingly insignificant personal treasures can be used to make an impact, he says--like the stone engraved with the word "grace," which sits on a table in what he calls "the welcome room," rather than the foyer. It was a gift from the family's pastor, shortly before Andersen learned his young grandson was autistic. "God really spoke to me [through it] in those days, and showed me His grace in my darkest hour," he recalls. "On occasions when people come in they will remark on the stone, and I will retell the story. I always fall apart when I tell it, and someone else will say, 'We didn't know you had hurts. We thought you had it all together. We have hurts; can we share them with you?'" A frequent guest on television and radio, Andersen says that many Christians fail to make the most of their homes either because they feel guilty about what they do have, or they feel that they don't have enough to be able to make anything of it. "Some feel that they have to live in a clinical environment and are afraid to begin to fulfill what God has put in them with regard to creativity," he says. "[But] the home is exalted throughout Scripture, and beauty is of God. I'm not talking about gilded candles; whatever you perceive to be beautiful, it comes from Him. "I have had people tell me they couldn't entertain because their home was not up to snuff, and they wished it was perfect. But perfect will never come...Doors will open when we invite people in, not to take a tour but to share each others' hearts." Andersen's mission has been endorsed by Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who credits the designer with helping "make the mansion a home," when he took office. "He helped us make the family quarters uniquely ours," he says.

Even the names of each room reveal much reflection on the purpose and function of that room and the very place that room holds in their lives.

Mr. Andersen offers this paragraph early in the book: "In offering this idea of silent witness, I don't envision 'praying hands' or Christian magazines on the coffee tables. How you use your home and what people sense when they are in it are far more revealing." Examples of the "words" the Andersens desire their home to "say" are faith, contentment, hospitality, meekness, gentleness, generosity, creativity, and gratefulness. Words that--with the right "accent" and "pronunciation"--reflect a Creator/Loving Heavenly Father for whom the Andersens obviously feel honored to be stewards.

Mr. Andersen has notable credentials for his work and is responsible for the beauty and design for many internationally known venues, but his concepts for planning and decorating a home are applicable to all. His suggestions and observations center a great deal on using this "language" in your decorating--where you are, using what you have.

A word of warning to the Andersens is that all who enjoy this book will desire a meal and overnight stay in their home--not to take advantage of this intimate glimpse into the beauty and warmth of their home, but to be loved, listened to, and nurtured as the Andersens use God's beauty and order and their heart for God to love and encourage others through them.

SILENT WITNESS: The Language of Your Home strikes a chord within me as I decorate a new home. I am looking at--and listening to--my home with new eyes and ears to hear what it says to those who come near. I'm planning to teach it some new words that come straight from our Father--a holy, loving God--for whom my husband Jack and I are blessed to be stewards.

This book has the worst photography I have ever seen in my life. It uses outdated, low-res photography. It is a decent visual reference, but half the POP's are not even that good. Save your money.

                  THE HOUSTON CHRONICLE
When quiet, shy Amelia Jones reads a desperate message that has fallen out of a barrel organ in the antique shop she just bought, she can't forget the words, "They're going to kill me soon..." Armed only with the woman's first name and the note written years before, Amelia begins a journey into the past, a search that takes her from the protective cocoon she's wrapped herself in to a precarious world where nothing is the way it seems, where fear is second nature, and dark secrets just might uncover murder--her own....

                  5 out of 5 stars A Page Turner.......2006-12-17

This story starts off from the first page and keeps you turning pages to the end. One of the great qualities of Gilman's writings is knowing how to pace the story and this is a good example of that. Amelia is likeable from the beginning. Quirky and imperfect but the kind of woman you want to sit to tea with. As the mystery unfolds, she develops into someone stronger as if she is traveling through the maze as well. The other characters are also quite believeable and have their own unique personalities. The mystery is good as well though I figured it out before the end.

It is odd to think that Gilman was incorporating one of her other books within this story especially since the author of the book is murdered. And she does it so well that you want to read "The Maze at the Heart of the Castle" soon afterward. It is a good story on its own, I'd love to see an illustrated version. And I'd also love to know if there really is a sequal. Perhaps someday the Maze will be back in print again. It really does go hand in hand with this story, for Amelia goest through the same thing Colin does, though in slightly different circumstances.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants a good mystery with good character development and scope for thought.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorites........2003-12-18

I love this book so much I bought a first editon copy. It is the quintessential quirky mystery with lots of fun characters and an enjoyable mystery plot. I read it about once a year. Even if you don't normally pick up a novel this short, give it a try, you'll enjoy it!

My second favorite of D. Gilman's is the first Mrs. Pollifax novel, I think it's the Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Great Discovery!.......2002-05-06

In a story that seems right out of Dorothy Gilman's imagination, I found this story in a musty suitcase in my parents' attic at the age of 12. It was in a book of Readers' Digest Abridged books for 1979. Also included were 2 very excellent stories and one pretty good one (excellent: Hungry as the Sea, Flesh and Spirit; pretty good: The Passing Bells). I loved the story from the moment I read the opening words. This is an anomaly for me. Usually it takes me time to get into the rhythm and flow of just about any book I read (the only other notable exception is Like Water for Chocolate, which is positively delicious). This book grabbed me from the instant I started reading it and I couldn't put it down, literally, till the surprise ending.
I especially love the characterization of Amelia. Here is this shy, rather mousy girl who doesn't seem like much of anything. Then suddenly she finds herself drawn into a mystery after finding a note from a woman who is sure she will be murdered soon. Quite the opposite of her portrayal at the beginning of the book, Amelia soon proves to readers and to herself that she is quite extraordinary. We realize she is resourceful, intuitive, and intelligent. In fact it is only from this investigation of a murder plot that Amelia really grows up from the stunted emotional state she has been living in since her mother's suicide. Plus reading the book in the true unabridged form is wonderful. I always felt that reading abridged books is a bit like eating dehydrated foods. You're made to think that you've lost nothing but the taste really suffers.
So I'd recommend this book to anyone, mystery aficianado or not. It's gripping, intelligent, and actually funny. Now I'm sixteen and though I've outgrown a lot of other things..., I still love this book.

4 out of 5 stars Tasty Little Bonbon of a Mystery Book.......2002-01-24

This is tasty little mystery story. It lasts for a short 223 pages and yet it manages to pack in a surprising amount of character development and action between its covers.

The heroine, Amelia Jones, is an endearing young woman taking her first real steps out into the world. Amelia impulsively purchases the Ebbtide Shop, a musty antique store stocked with junk and marvelous finds. She decides to put aside one item, a hurdy-gurdy (or hand organ box), as a furnishing for her upstairs apartment. When the hurdy-gurdy mysteriously stops playing music, Amelia opens the box and discovers a desperate note written on faded paper. The message begins with "They are going to kill me soon..." and ends with "...my name is Hannah." Amelia believes that the note is likely genuine. When questions about Hannah's fate begin to consume her, Amelia ventures further out into the world on a quest to find out the truth. Along the way, she meets many interesting people and becomes involved in a variety of unusual circumstances. The plot is a charming mix of mysterious happenings and coming-of-age realizations that make the reader vitally interested in Amelia's story and how it intertwines with Hannah's.

Though this book is shorter than I usually read, I highly recommend it. I think that it is particularly ideal for anyone wishing to read poolside or during their lunchbreak. The interesting storyline and clean writing style make it easy to pick up again after taking a nap or experiencing one of life's other interruptions.
