Book Description

Sushila is an affluent New Yorker of Indian descent disillusioned with corporate America. She drops out of the rat race to "find herself" but instead discovers her mother's hidden past as a devotional Indian dancer who defied her family to pursue her dreams. As Sushila uncovers the events of her mother's extraordinary life, she comes to understand the indomitable spirit propelling the woman who shaped her own character.

What caused a mother to mysteriously escape a prearranged marriage, defying her duty to her parents? How did she become the first woman at Princeton? Why does she so guardedly conceal her impressive history? And is her daughter destined to follow in a mother's rebellious footsteps?

At once a celebration of mothers and daughters and a tribute to the unacknowledged helpers who smooth the paths of our lives, "Ganesh" spans decades, cultures and continents, traversing the rise of Gandhi in India through post-colonialist England into segregated 1950s America with uncommon wit and inordinate sensitivity.

A gorgeously wrought story that weaves magical realism into historical fiction, "Ganesh" explores the challenges faced by independent spirits breaking from the rigidities of tradition and eloquently evokes the role of the "unseen hand" in choreographing the dance of life.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic, must read.......2006-10-24

This is a great book for Indian immigrants across the globe. Sujoya takes us thru' a fantastic life journey of an Indian woman before partition to her current times in the western world. In the process, she brings to life the characters and makes the environs real.

Though partly based on a real life story, the book is an easy read. The story structure is woven around Bharatnatyam classical dance, but is more about the travails of life.

My wife, daughter, and I have read it couple of times. You are sure to read it in one sitting!!!

This first-time novelist deserves high praises for a such a captivating, intriguing book. She successfully wove its many threads that artfully came together in the end--and what an ending! I was never so deeply moved by a book's conclusion. Read it and discover for yourself!

A great tribute to Sujoya's mom. A great book that is a must read for all aspiring young immigrant girls. I'd love to read more like it.

Some books read well but do not discuss well. This is the best of both worlds. The subject matter of Ganesh is not only thought provoking but holds the readers interest. A glimpse of two different cultures comes together in this author's first novel. The ending makes one wonder what becomes of the characters. Ms Roy just completed a tour of the lakeshore area of Wisconsin....I was fortunate to hear her read passages and discuss her fascinating family upon which her novel was written. Well worth adding to your book clubs discussion list.

5 out of 5 stars For Ganesh, Remover of Obstacles.......2005-10-17

What a read! Sujoya Roy's book "For Ganesh" is a wonder of sound, color and image. The traditional Indian dance scenes were so intense I felt winded after reading them. I smelled cumin coming off the pages. When the action in the book moves from India to the cold UK, I needed to bundle up myself.

The story is narrated by a woman who is learning her mother's history and youth. The book is full of surprises and set against the backdrop of a warm an vigorously Brahmin family.

In addition to learning about the family and the India in which the book is set, Roy also says things about much bigger themes, including what makes a community a community, how women find themselves, what can happen when east meets west and how tradition influences modernity. There is a scene toward the end of the book that is so touching and so beautiful I found myself thinking about it long after I finished the book. For that scene alone I recommend "For Ganesh"!

Book Description

Imagine a world where magic rubs elbows with science, where men and women with supernatural powers secretly risk their lives to help others. It is a world where one right turn can deliver a mystery that will change your life forever, a world of shape-shifters, immortal magicians, criminal underworlds run by powerful psychics -- intrigue, mystery, and romance.

The saga continues in THE RED HEART OF JADE as Dean Campbell -- clairvoyant, dangerous, and irreverent -- finds himself hot on the trail of a murderer who is part of an ancient hunt for power, a hunt that has only one outcome: death or destruction. And at the heart of that hunt -- both prize and mystery -- is a women who died in Dean's arms twenty years earlier: Mirabelle Lee, childhood sweetheart and the love of his life. Together, alive and reunited, Dean and Miri are forced to rely on each other -- and the strength of their enduring love -- as they race to unravel the mystery that threatens not only their lives, but the entire world.

3 out of 5 stars Chiming in with the others.......2007-02-14

Sadly, I have to agree with the other "negative" views of this book.

I enjoyed Tiger Eye, and Shadow Touch much more than Red Heart of Jade.

the negatives: The ending was too abrupt, and obvious. It felt rushed, and unsatisfactory...
There wasn't a true ending with Owen, Miri's boss. He was kidnapped in the first few chapters, and then, we never see him again...
"mystery sort-of-evil guy, Robert" became Miri and Dean's ally all too quick.
The Jade Heart's true nature was all too easy to guess.
There wasn't enough "steamy passion" that one would expect from Romance novels, not that I'm an expert in such!
The "mystery" killer is not a mystery.
the scenery was too little. It did not feel like Asia.

There was less supense in this novel than the other two I mentioned. However, I have to disagree with some of the other commenters. On Dean's transformation--over the years, people change. Some get worse, or better it depends on their situation. If someone I loved or cared about died as a result of my inaction, I too, would become as cynical and serious as Dean.
and, if we're to believe the time gap between each of Marjorie's books, than Dean is at least 5-8 years older when he last appeared.

the positives: the action was good, pacing was just right. I enjoyed a quick trip when reading the book, nothing more. It was like watching a 2-hour action flick.

good book for entertainment. Not as good as the others.

I stumbled across another book by Ms.Liu via my daughter and liked it alot. So I decided to go ahead and buy all of the books I could find by Ms.liu, I sure don't regret it since they are all excellent. Lots of adventure and paranormalities in this book wrapped up in humor and sorrow in a way that makes the reader feel like they are part of it, which in my humble opinion is what makes a good book. I am looking forward to more books not only in the Dirk & Steele series but in all aspects

2 out of 5 stars BOOOORRRING!.......2007-01-16

Unfortunately, I did not feel the same about this book as other reviewers. Perhaps, I did not have the patience that they did. I loved Tiger's Eye, Shadow Touch, and Taste of Crimson all of which were written by Marjorie M. Liu. This book was such a disappointment.

The Red Heart of Jade was more action/adventure/fantasy than her prior two books in the series. It was too much for me to handle. I missed the romance that was involved in the other two books. The relationship between Miri and Dean made me want to wretch. Dean in the other books was the comedic relief. In the first book, Tiger's Eye, he was the one that could not be serious and was a pervert to boot. In this book, we see a very serious Dean. It made the book too unrealistic due to this new and different Dean.

Another problem, is the location of the story. While Ms. Liu's description of Taipei, Hong Kong, and other locations were magnificent it did not help me feel connected to the story. It affected the fluidity and ease of comprehension for me. I found myself saying who cares. These locations were described as smelly and dirty. They did not set a romantic stage for me. I found the whole premise of a red jade buried in a mummified woman a boring concept. Perhaps, if there were no dragons, an immortal bad guy named Robert, an evil department head, and going off to la-la land where there are descriptions of bones that it might have helped me enjoy it more. After a while, I found myself saying who is the character that is speaking or thinking this? Is this the dream realm, imagination, or for real?

On the other hand, Marjorie M. Liu's sentences are rich with poetry. I have never heard such beautiful descriptions of certain scenes. They just flowed. She is a very talented and gifted author. This is why I gave the book two stars instead of one.

I did not feel the continuity of this book in relation to the rest of the series. I wonder how this book will impact the future books. It should definitely have an impact on the other characters especially, Koni and Ren.

I would love to follow the series but if they are like this one, I will not read them anymore. I do want to hear Koni's story and even Ren's. It took me a lot longer to get through this book than I normally take for a book. It was a torturous read but I needed to find out what the jade meant, what about Dean's gift, what is Robert, will Miri and Dean live happily ever after, and what of the dragons?

If you are looking for a quick and romantic read this is not the book for you. Unfortunately, this book was placed in the romance section of my library. This is the wrong category for this book. However, this book is great for history of a beautiful culture, great writing, and fantasy adventure.

2 out of 5 stars Couldn't finish it.......2006-12-17

I really wanted to like this book. I had read "A Taste Of Crimson" by Marjorie Liu and I loved it. That book was about werewolves and vampires but it had some really strong subthemes such as racism within minorities (such as werewolves) and the way that minorities can be ignored by governmental agencies. I so enjoyed that book that I ordered the only other Marjorie Liu book available through my county's library system - and voilà, "The Red Heart Of Jade" appeared.

I was disappointed. Firstly it wasn't another vampire/werewolf book - this one was a "Dirk & Steele Romance" which (I now discover) is a series Marjorie Liu has done about a kind-of detective agency staffed by people with different paranormal powers. The hero of this book, Dean (a very unheroic name!) has a psychic ability to `read' objects and environments and can find out what has happened in them. Our heroine, Mirabelle Lee, is an archaeologist in Taiwan. Dean and Miri were childhood sweethearts but both thought the other died twenty years ago and their lives have moved on since.

Dean is sent to Taiwan to investigate some grisly murders that appear to be the fault of a shapeshifter. Whilst in Taiwan various things happen to him and he eventually meets up with Miri - and drags her into the fray. There's a piece of red Jade that's been found in an archaeological body find and it seems everyone is after this Jade. About this point I found I just had to give up with the book - I couldn't work out what was going on, couldn't get interested in either Dean or Miri, couldn't always understand the descriptions of the shapeshifters, didn't really see where the book was going and found I didn't care anyway. The setting of Taiwan was unusual and I felt was an excellent choice but I just couldn't engage with this book. I gave up halfway through, read the last five or so pages (which confirmed I was right to give up on it as evidently the ending would have REALLY annoyed me if I had read it all) and gave it back to the library. Now some of you reading this might think it's a really good book - perhaps it is - but I read widely and I just couldn't like it. If you want to read a book by this author read "A Taste Of Crimson" - I can't recommend any more of her books as I won't take the effort to find them.

2 out of 5 stars Can you use the same imagination for suspense to write truly erotic sex, please!?.......2006-12-13

I really wanted to love this novel, or any other in this series but I have to say I don't think I'll be buying any other books written by Ms. Liu. I love mystery, drama, danger breathing down my neck just fine but it has to be juxtaposed with steamy sex. This is why I read paranormal romance. Maybe I just like my written sex extra juicy (since reality delivers just as many times as it doesn't) and found hers to be lacking. Especially after she shows such imagination in every other aspect of her writing. Her writing reminds me of old James Bond novels I read as a kid, none stop action that pulls you in but I ended up disappointed by the time I finished hers. My favourites in this series were; Tiger Eye and Eye of Heaven. The former because it was the first and I didn't have any opinions and she writes well , just not imaginative when it comes to sex. The latter because she made an attempt.
She writes very bland sex otherwise her work is riveting.

Creationists rarely find sympathy in the ranks of science fiction authors--or fans, for that matter. And while Robert J. Sawyer doesn't exactly make peace with evangelicals on the issue, Calculating God has to be one of the more thoughtful and sympathetic SF portrayals you'll find of religion and intelligent design. But that should come as no surprise from this crafty Canadian: in the Nebula Award-winning Terminal Experiment, Sawyer speculated on what would happen if hard evidence were ever found for the human soul; in Calculating God, he turns science on its head again when earth is invaded by theists from outer space.

The book starts out like the setup for some punny science fiction joke: An alien walks into a museum and asks if he can see a paleontologist. But the arachnid ET hasn't come aboard a rowboat with the Pope and Stephen Hawking (although His Holiness does request an audience later). Landing at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the spacefarer (named Hollus) asks to compare notes on mass extinctions with resident dino-scientist Thomas Jericho. A shocked Jericho finds that not only does life exist on other planets, but that every civilization in the galaxy has experienced extinction events at precisely the same time. Armed with that disconcerting information (and a little help from a grand unifying theory), the alien informs Jericho, almost dismissively, that "the primary goal of modern science is to discover why God has behaved as he has and to determine his methods."

Inventive, fast-paced, and alternately funny and touching, Calculating God sneaks in a well-researched survey of evolution science, exobiology, and philosophy amidst the banter between Hollus and Jericho. But the book also proves to be very moving and character-driven SF, as Jericho--in the face of Hollus's convincing arguments--grapples with his own bitter reasons for not believing in God. --Paul Hughes

      Book Description

Calculating God is the new near-future SF thriller from the popular and award-winning Robert J. Sawyer. An alien shuttle craft lands outside the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. A six-legged, two-armed alien emerges, who says, in perfect English, "Take me to a paleontologist." It seems that Earth, and the alien's home planet, and the home planet of another alien species traveling on the alien mother ship, all experienced the same five cataclysmic events at about the same time (one example of these "cataclysmic events" would be the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs). Both alien races believe this proves the existence of God: i.e. he's obviously been playing with the evolution of life on each of these planets. From this provocative launch point, Sawyer tells a fast-paced, and morally and intellectually challenging, SF story that just grows larger and larger in scope. The evidence of God's universal existence is not universally well received on Earth, nor even immediately believed. And it reveals nothing of God's nature. In fact. it poses more questions than it answers. When a supernova explodes out in the galaxy but close enough to wipe out life on all three home-worlds, the big question is, Will God intervene or is this the sixth cataclysm:?Calculating God is SF on the grand scale.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written book with vigorous intellectual debates and a touching friendship.......2007-07-26

"Excuse me. I would like to see a paleontologist."

Those are the first words uttered by an extraterrestrial visitor to Earth in Robert J. Sawyer's novel _Calculating God_. The alien, whose name is Hollus, a vaguely spider-like nearly human-sized alien of a species known as Forhilnor, had come this planet with a mixed species crew (the other species is known as the Wreeds) to investigate an interesting anomaly present on not only their homeworlds but apparently also on Earth. There have been five major mass extinctions in the history of our world, one 440 million years ago, one 365 million years ago, one 225 million years ago, one 210 million years ago, and the final big one 65 million years ago (the famous one that ended the reign of the dinosaurs). It would seem based on data that Hollus and other researchers had collected that the Wreed, Forhilnor, and Human worlds all have had five major mass extinctions and that all five mass extinctions occurred at almost exactly the same time. Hollus wanted to see if the effects of Earth's mass extinctions were similar as it was on their homeworld and to get some idea of the causes as well. Was there a common factor, and if so what?

Working with Royal Ontario Museum paleontologist Tom Jericho, Hollus and Tom become through the course of a book first a team, then dear friends, as together they plunge the depths of this mystery. Indeed a good percentage of the book is about their budding friendship as at first the two debate aspects of this great mystery but then also start to debate other topics of life in general.

Indeed, much of the book is basically an interesting intellectual discussion between Hollus and Tom, as they come up with reasons why the three worlds should have such seemingly impossible coincidences and debate back and forth several major, interrelated ideas. Tom, who is not religious and essentially Atheist, is startled to find that Hollus and his alien companions are dedicated believers in God. Not necessarily religious, as in fact Hollus is quite doubtful about things like prayer and organized religion, Hollus is nonetheless quite convinced that God's existence is an established scientific fact. The debate is quite lively and interesting, with concepts like the anthropic cosmological principle (that the universe is uniquely designed to support life) and God as an emergent property of the universe bandied about. Essentially, Hollus argues for intelligent design though on a scale and to a degree of complexity that I have not previously encountered.

Events in Tom's personal life force him to come to grips with God in a different way, events that lend a sad undertone to the book as the story events progress, though the ending is hopeful in many ways.

A very interesting book, it is hard not to like either Tom or Hollus. Both the Forhilnors and the Wreeds are well-thought out "alien" aliens and I enjoyed the author's exploration of how metaphors might be very different among aliens for instance, or how the number of digits (fingers basically) a sentient race evolves with will influence their entire worldview and intellectual development. I liked Hollus' sense of humor and his and Tom's amusing comments on the treatment of paleontological and exobiological subjects in popular media. I had thought that the book would stay a gentle and interesting intellectual debate to the very end but two jarring events occur which radically changes things for all the characters involved.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent hard Sci-Fi and great philosophical discussion on God Existence.......2007-06-04

Sawyer is a great hard Sci-Fi writer, finally we have someone who has the style of the good old masters. He is as good as Arthur Clarke in extrapolating science at his best times, as interesting in exploring the consequences of new scientific discoveries as Michael Crichton, but with better characters, and his philosophical discussion regarding God's existence rivals with Richard Dawkins's "The God Delusion".

In fact, Sawyer's novel explores more objectively every issue about the existence of God in a throughout manner, considering the latest knowledge in biology, genetics, evolution and cosmology, and without offending or criticizing modern religions, as Dawkins did. For those who read Dawkins's "The God Delusion", this novel will clarify why some consider that Dawkins' weakest argument has to do with the origin of life and the Big Bang. Despite of the fact this is just a sci-fi novel, through the discussion between Holus (the alien who believes in God as a matter of scientific truth) and Dr. Jericho (the Canadian scientist who is a hard atheist, Dawkins style), Mr. Sawyer present us with a fair and balanced argumentation for each position (deist -not to be confused as creationist- vs. atheist). The final is a brilliant, just a shame it is only a brilliant speculation, but based on hard scientific possibilities.

A book highly recommended for hard sci-fi fans, and also for those who enjoyed reading Carl Sagan, Paul Davies, Richard Dawkins and Stephen Hawking. I am looking forward to read Sawyer's other books, and I am just sad I didn't discover him earlier, since I haven't read a good hard science fiction novel from a new author since the 20th century.

      4 out of 5 stars Likeable SciFi.......2007-05-12

Entertaining, thought provoking SciFi, with some laughs along the way, good ploting, great charactors and accessable to mainstream readers. Sawyer is one of the better SciFi writers and deserves your attention, tho I'd recommend starting with "Mindscan" which I like a whole lot more. :)

3 out of 5 stars Light and entertaining, but could annoy some hardcore sci-fi readers.......2007-04-27

I got mixed feelings about this book. In one hand I enjoyed the "what if" exercise proposed by Robert J. Sawyer, after all we would never expect some advanced alien civilizations to be creationists.

On the other hand, the author tries too hard to give more credibility to some of the most commons creationist arguments, such as irreducible complexity and the anthropic principle, and I would expect the main character (a senior paleontologist at a large museum, and by his own account experienced debating creationism) to refute those arguments, instead of being stumped. The book will also age quickly because it is very centered on the current debate, mentioning real characters, books and events, which will probably be less and less relevant as the years go by.

It is also a bit hard to believe that the arrival of not only one but two alien species to Earth would cause so little controversy. I am not sure if the author deliberately decided to keep those details out, but it feels as if the humanity accepted and got used to such bombastic news in a couple of days, "and now to our next story...".

If I didn't know Robert Sawyer's work I would dismiss as bad creationist literature. But the last 30 pages had an interesting, moving twist that made the book deserve a 3rd star...but probably 2 1/2 would be more fitting.

4 out of 5 stars Alien who believes in God.......2007-04-19

Sawyer takes on a hot topic in the news -materialism vs intelligent design- and gives a fair treatment of both sides in an interesting tale of a spider-like alien who lands at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and asks to see a paleontologist. The alien is shocked to discover that the paleontologist doesn't believe in God since says he "the fact that we live in a created universe is apparent to anyone with sufficient intelligence and information." I found it puzzling that Sawyer has the alien stating that irreducibly complex features of living things convince him of a designer, but that he believes that God himself arose by chance in the universe. Not a very defensible argument to make in my opinion. Overall the book was well written and kept my interest.

            Book Description

The Twelfth Edition of this best-selling, topically organized anthology provides a superb balance of historical selections and recent material. Now a part of Wadsworth's new Advantage Series and issued for the first time in a paperback format at a reduced price, this new edition features more readings than ever before--79 total--all, where necessary, in the finest translations available. The readings complement each other and naturally build on the topic being covered. Clear, concise introductions to each Part provide just enough guidance to let students learn from experiencing the readings themselves. The text's long-heralded selection of readings covers topics such as reason and religious belief, human knowledge, mind and its place in nature, determinism, free will and responsibility, and morality and its critics in five parts with careful attention to opposing points of view.

3 out of 5 stars A reasonable book for an upper division specialty course.......2007-08-06

A straight anthology without sufficient background material to help students make sense of the essays. I would not advise it for an Introduction to Philosophy course. Essays in the books focus on issues of reason, the limits of knowledge, and ethics based upon human reason. The selection of essays show a bias toward American positivism and contrary philosophical views (of which there are many) are not represented. The amount of philosophy this book ignores on the book's chosen topics is enormous. This is also a reason not to use this text for an Introductory class. If this was the only text used in an introductory course, students would come away with a very stilted and erroneous view of philosophy. It would be good for an upper division course focused on American positivism where students already have sufficient background in philosophy to understand these specialized essays and understand the selective nature of the text's selections.

            5 out of 5 stars Philosophy 103.......2006-12-13

I had to buy this book for a general education requirement this year. However, the class turned out to be my favorite (the teacher certainly helped) and I'm keeping the book after the semester is over. Reason and Responsibility contains essays from the greatest philosophers (and some not so great) in order to give the beginner a comprehensive overview of philosophy.

At times, the essays were edited so that parts of the original selection were omitted. I had difficulty writing papers which criticized certain arguments become some claims can only be made from the entire text. However, if you are just reading this for fun as an introduction to philosophy, I highly recommend it.

            5 out of 5 stars Simply great!!!.......2006-02-11

I have never taken a course in philosophy. But, I think this is not just a text book for Philosophy 101. It is a great collection of essays, on a variety of topics, written by some of the greatet thinkers the world has produced. The editorial introduction for each topic beautifully lays down the ground work. This is followed by writings from eminent scholars representing various positions that have been taken on the issue. It is hard to find so much material in one volume. A must-have book for anyone with even a precursory interest in some of the most fundamental questions posed by life.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Book.......2004-12-28

I highly recommend Feinberg's 'Reason and Responsibility' to beginning philosophers. Feinberg presents various philosophical topics in an organized manner and selects text that is easy to understand for readers new to philosophy. Readers are weaned into the language of philosophy by first being presented with the jargon in the beginning of each section. It's a great book that covers a variety of topics, from arguments about God's existence to ethics to abortion.

                Book Description

Fenton Art Glass Company began producing Hobnail items in several shapes as special orders for other companies during the 1930s. The pattern seemed popular, so Hobnail was introduced into the Fenton general line in opalescent colors in 1940. Since that time Hobnail has been made in many colors and shapes. To date, there has been no single reference that combines all of Fentons Hobnail productionuntil now! All shapes and colors of the entire Fenton Hobnail production from the late 1930s to the present are covered in Fenton Art Glass Hobnail Pattern. This book groups similar items by category, such as baskets, bowls, candles, lamps, pitchers, vases, and vanity items. Pieces from the Fenton general line, as well as special order items for entities like the Fenton Gift Shop, Levay Distributing, and QVC are included. Each piece is described, priced, and dated. Photographs showing at least one color of each shape are included. The book describes over 400 shapes of Hobnail items, many in numerous colors, and includes over 600 photographs. Its a must-have for Fenton collectors everywhere, and a perfect companion to the Whitmyers other Fenton titles.

This is a well organized book by the Whitmyers. This time they are right on the money. Excellent historical information on production and itemized inventory of pieces by shape and size. Looking for a vase? Look under vase - how novel. Very well done; photos are good. Book Values seem about right. Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars The Greeting Card Writer's Bible.......2002-02-05

This book covers every imaginable topic a prospective greeting card writer needs to know. Once you pick it up, you will read it cover-to-cover, and will be inspired to get started in the business. I first read the book this past July and immediately began to follow Sandra's plan for success. In less than six months, I have sold over ten verses to three different companies and feel confident that this is only the beginning. I am also amazed at how accessible Sandra is to her readers. Via e-mail, she has guided me, inspired me, and motivated me. Whenever I feel that there couldn't possibly be any more ideas out there that haven't already been done, I go back to the "We Write!" section and do the exercises again. Some of my successful verse is the direct result of her suggestions, such as the clever "Initials" exercise. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever thought about writing greeting cards. Like any writing genre, Sandra tells us there is rejection, but that perseverance can and does pay off. I'm making money while having fun - it just doesn't get any better than that!

5 out of 5 stars Wrote over 50 cards just from the exercises!.......2001-07-11

There are two things that make this book exceptional. One is that if you know nothing about greeting card writing it covers a lot of territory. The exercises are designed to put you in the frame of mind you will need to be a greeting card writer. And two, the follow up that Mrs. Miller-Louden provides. It's one thing to read a book and have questions, it's another to be offered communication with the author through email and snail mail. And have quick responses to your inquiries. She also has a message board where others can talk to one another about this new career. She is definitely a teacher that cares about her students walking away understanding the material and being able to apply it. (Granted: if you are looking for a literary masterpiece, can't help you. If your looking for a laymans book to get you going on a possible career in greeting cards, then this primer is for you!)

                  5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" Book!.......2001-02-12

Sandra M. Louden offers a wealth of real life expertize and advice on how to not only "think" about the freelance business of writing greeting cards but also how to actually "do" it! It's an easily-readable "soup to nuts" guide that even explains how to set up a filing system in your home. (Over a weekend, I read the book, collected the supplies, put them all in a banker's box and was ready to go!) The author avails herself to Internet access for follow-up communication and offers a "verse critiquing" service. A fun and inspiring book to get you started!

5 out of 5 stars If You Want To Succeed This Excellent Book You Must Read.......2000-10-11

Over the years I have written countless thank you, congratulatory, encouraging and sympathy notes for my loved ones. So many of my friends and family told me how much my words touched them and that I should consider writing greeting cards. The idea appealed to me but I didn't know where to begin. While at Barnes and Noble I came across the book: Write Well and Sell Greeting Cards by Sandra M. Louden. That little book answered my every question and in an easy step by fashion took me from how to conceive of a greeting card idea to how to get it sold. The book even included names and address of various greeting card companies. I can't begin to tell you how much this book has helped me. If you want to avoid making time-consuming mistakes and be successful at writing greeting cards I strongly suggest that you buy Sandra M. Louden's book: Write Well and Sell Greeting Cards.

                  Book Description

What has come to be known as the French country look is really the style of Provence -- the sun-drenched region in the south of France centering on Arles, Avignon, and Aix-en-Provence. It is a land of cool stone chateaux, farmhouses painted in ochres and dusty roses, country roads bordered by rows of graceful cypress trees, fields of lavender, trellised grapevines, red tile roofs, ancient hilltop cities such as Les Baux, and the vivid blue of the Mediterranean along the Cote d'Azur. The clarity of the light and the intoxicating sensuality of the landscape inspired Cezanne and Van Gogh.

In over 450 full-color photographs, Pierre Deux's French Country explores all the rich ingredients of Provencal style. There are chapters on colors, fabrics, pottery, furniture, decorative elements, houses, gardens, and French country adaptations in the United States. A ten-page directory offers U.S. and French sources for regional antiques and contemporary products.

From the brightly patterned paisley cottons of Souleiado in Tarascon to the hand-blown glass of Biot and the hand-molded faience platters of Moustiers, from the massive 18th-century armoires and rush-seated banquettes and chairs to bread boxes, saltboxes, and chests with intricately carved floral motifs, the craftsmanship of the region imparts a special luster, a vibrancy and warmth of color and texture that survive in the works of today, Whether presenting a charmingly rustic ranch deep in the horse country of the Camargue, a Renaissance mas in the foothills of the Alps, or a wine-producer's estate near Saint-Remy, this book paints a vivid portrait of a land of grace and simplicity that is at once exuberantly beautiful, seductive, effortless, and sophisticated.

A "must-have" for those who want to capture the essence of Provence, France in their home, or in just a corner of a room. This out of print book represents the earlier, pure beginnings, the "je ne sais quoi" of this warm style. Lovely photographs, good text will provide ideas for large decorating projects as well as subtle touches in one's own home wherever it may be in the world.

I am a high school graphic arts teacher, and am always looking for resources to help bring the most accurate and up-to-date information to my students. This book was an incredible find!! It contains very basic yet crucial foundational information regarding the creation of digital artwork. It features a chapter on building a studio, which includes everything you need to know about your computer and peripherals. It also includes several chapters of ideas on everything from preparing scanned images to understanding computer color theory to creating interesting effects in your images to explaining all the different file formats available. This book is a gem - I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a user-friendly resource that explains the process of creating digital images in terms that just about anyone can understand.

I picked Glen's book at the public library and simply loved it. It is a great book that showcases different techniques. I also liked the fact it does not restrict itself to the high end software, but also shows examples using Dabbler (the best value for the money). It is a good book both as a first time reading and a reference book. :-)

I don't usually read non-fiction to escape and feel good, but Ms. Cronley's collection of essays gifted me with a wonderful afternoon of humor and insightful commentary. I adore this collection! Order this book, curl up with your cat and your favorite glass of wine (or two), and prepare to have a wonderful time.

This book is fantastic. Connie has managed to put into words what most people just think. It is great to read a book with such witty humor and deep insight. Bravo Connie, my hat is off to you.

5 out of 5 stars Cats, Moonlight, Gardening and Warm Sun.......2000-11-23

This book may make you see things differently. You may see cats differently, or flower gardening, or bright moonlight nights, or crisp spring days. Ms. Cronley's gift for imagery makes this an enjoyable reading experience. Her wit is a bonus. I experienced many giggles and a few really good laughs while reading it. I couldn't decide whether to buy the book or the audio cassette, so I bought both, and I'm glad I did. I enjoy the book at home and the cassette in my car.

5 out of 5 stars Deft touch and winsome observations.......2000-11-22

Connie Cronley's "Sometimes a Wheel Falls Off" is a collection of wry observations and smothered giggles. Each piece, originally drafted for NPR, has a deft and gentle humor reminiscent of the Talk of the Town brief assays from the New Yorker. Ms. Cronley describes the small universe of her home and cats, her cosy neighborhood, and the larger world she visits when she travels. But some essays are more worldly than these perfectly crafted intimate essays. She provides wise and thoughtful analysis of well known authors and their work. The best part of this collection is the voice of a friend, admiting fraility and finding gentle humor in the vagaries of her life. It's a thinking person's inspiration. I bought twelve copies as Christmas gifts and I realize that I need few more.

5 out of 5 stars Connie Cronley at her Best.......2000-11-10

I give Connie Cronley 5 glittering stars for this enchanting book of essays about all the things we experience but are often too busy to stop and observe. She has recorded most of these essays (first heard on Public Radio) and what a recording it is. Listening to it over and over is like visiting with a good friend.
