Book Description
Sweeping through one hundred years of Scandinavian history, this luminous story follows three generations of Swedish women--a grandmother, a mother, and a daughter--whose lives are linked through a century of great love and great loss. Resonating with truth and revelation, this moving novel deftly explores the often difficult but enduring ties between mothers and daughters, the sacrifices, compromises, and rewards in the relationships between men and women, and the patterns of emotion that repeat themselves through generations. If you have ever wanted to connect with the past, or rediscover family, Hanna's Daughters will strike a chord in your heart. . . .

Perceptive generational saga.......2007-07-28
The first of Swedish author Fredriksson's novels to be published in the U.S., "Hanna's Daughters" is the story of three generations of women. Spanning a hundred years of history, it explores a period of great upheaval, when hardship and modernization affected ideas of marriage and parenting.
The novel opens in the present with a brief introduction of Johanna, daughter of Hanna, mother of Anna. Johanna, now confined to a nursing home, exists in a "white world" inside her head, her memory gone, save for fragmented night dreams. Her daughter, full of guilt and agitated questions, upsets her without intending to. "Mother, she thought, dear wonderful Mother, why can't you show pity and die?"
Anna's father, over 90 and grumpy, arouses a mixture of irritation and guilt during her dutiful visits. "He has only two sides, anger and sentimentality, she thought."
The novel then turns back in time, to focus on Hanna, easily the best section of the book. Fredriksson vividly creates the hard, unsentimental life of farmers on the remote Norwegian border in the mid and late 1800s. "Hanna's mother had two batches of children. The first four died in the famine in the late 1860s."
Schooled in an expectation of injustice from man and God, raped at 12 and a mother at 13, Hanna develops a solid core of self-effacing, hardworking indomitability. When a comparatively prosperous miller comes to the region and asks to marry her, she can't believe her luck, though he's more than 20 years her senior. She thinks of her house, her respectability. "She gave not a thought to the man with whom she was to share her bed and life." Hugging her joy to herself, Hanna vows a laughing revenge on those who taunted her as a whore for being raped. "Then she was frightened and prayed earnestly to God to forgive her for such sinful thoughts."
Fredriksson draws the reader into the inner lives of Hanna and her grave, kindly husband John Broman. Each is unable to articulate or even demonstrate their emotions, investing their deepest feelings with a poignancy that's lacking in the discontent of the later generations.
Hanna's world is governed by practicalities of work and survival; raising crops, finding feed for the animals, keeping children healthy. Her serious, fatalistic view of life makes her much less fretful and angst-ridden than her daughter and especially her granddaughter.
Johanna, Hanna's only daughter and youngest, brightest child is only eight when her doting father dies, the mill is sold and her oldest brother moves Hanna and the other children to the city. Johanna, whose relationship with her mother has always been distant, soon finds much to despise in the old-before-her-time ignorant peasant so easily bewildered and impressed by urban technology.
Johanna comes of age in the depression and while her choice of a mate is draped in notions of "Mr. Right" and sexual love, at her core she is as practical as her mother, relieved to find a man with a secure job. Over time, she gains respect for her mother's strengths and sympathizes with what she views as weakness; age forges the timeless connections youth despises.
The pattern repeats with Anna, Johanna's only child. Although Hanna lived until Anna became an adult, the well-educated city girl was never interested in the old lady until her mother's illness sends her looking for continuity in the past. Although Anna marvels at the hardships her mother and grandmother endured and celebrates the bonds of motherhood and daughterhood that they share, her character is too minutely self-examined to arouse the compassion and admiration that Hanna does. Educated and politicized, these modern women seem bleached of their personalities.
Fredriksson is a fine, subtle writer, with a feel for elegant simplicity in expression and an ability to convey complicated nuances of history and character without belaboring the obvious cycles and universal truths. Nevertheless, for all its insight, the heart of this novel is Hanna's historical drama.
I wonder if it was as depressing to write as it was to read?.......2007-01-08
The front of my cover reads "an uplifting family saga", but I found nothing uplifting about it. This was one of the most depressing and dull books I've read in a while. Perhaps it has some redeeming value as "literature", but an enjoyable read it is not. Hanna, Johanna, and Anna are mothers and daughters who are, simply put, always sad. The idea of happiness is occasionally contemplated, but then decidedly dismissed. I read to the end just to see if anything was ever going to happen. Finally something did. They died.
A Woman's Legacy.......2006-10-17
This book is a bit difficult at first to get into. The beginning is a bit jumpy and some of the characters share the same name making it at times confusing. With all that said, stick it out and you can't help but enjoy seeing the legacy a women can leave. Although it is rooted in Scandinavian history, its truths and experiences are transcendental. A thought provoking and enjoyable read for women.
Hanna's Daughters is a wonderful book to share with the women of your family........2005-11-21
Hanna's Daughters is a wonderful book to share with the women of your family. I loved the three perspectives of Hanna, Joanna and Anna. I love how it shows evolution of society and practically women's roles over the span of the last three generations; the industrial revolution, first and second world wars and sexual revolution. This book will help women understand their mothers and their grandmothers. I love this book and have read and reread read it on several occasions. The only issue I have with this novel is that the translation is at times poor and the syntax and sentence structure seems inverted.
We cant escape our heritage.......2005-01-24
Whether one is of Scandianvian ancestry or some other, the influences of mother, grandmother, aunts and fathers is always in the back of our unconscious thought. We not only gather our physical features from genes but our personalities reflect years of absorption of family values, mores, morals and customs. As some reviews stated "The style of writing is Scandinavian", but that too reflects the way Scandinavians act; reserved, not to stand out, not to act better than others. Marianne Fredrickssen helped me see not only the history of life in Sweden when my grandparents were young and before they emigrated to America, but also, upon reflection, some of the family habits and customs on my other French-Dutch side through my mother's family traits. This is a powerful story for readers of any nationality who can feel deeply the emotions, fears and hopes of the characters portrayed. Women in America, in the same time periods, were not any better off, working for small wages, doing all the housework and care of the children under difficult economic and social conditions, and having to hold family life together through the depression. And not to forget men in America were often prone to drinking at the tavern and beating up on wives and children to assuage their frustrations and angers. No wonder there are still so many disfunctional families! I loved the book and have chosen it for my Book Club in March.
Young women today do not realize that they too will be the caretakers of their mothers; in spite of nursing homes and assisted living facilities.. Sons may give financial aid but it is always the daughters who tend the aging mothers, and not guilt free or without angry moments of frustration. Just wait, you too will experience some of what Johanna and Anna experienced.

Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable Read.......2007-07-01
The first thing readers should realize is that even though this book is second in the Bullet Catcher series, it is also a stand alone novel. Well written romantic suspense. The only reason it didn't get five stars from me was that there were not enough red herrings in the plot, making the reveal predictable in my opinion. Romance was plentiful though for readers looking for a little more sex in their novels than the typical Romantic suspense.
Max Roper is given a difficult assignment; be the bodyguard for his ex-fiance. He hasn't seen her since she ran away claiming he killed her father and she would never forgive him. Yet, she wasted no time in finding herself a new extemely wealthy husband, who just happened to have died three months earlier leaving her a sizeable fortune and a great deal of power. It's Max's job not only to protect her from whomever is trying to threaten her, but to find out if she killed her husband. The only problem is that he isn't sure if he can get her to confide in him without getting too close in the process and opening up a world of emotions locked to the past. Someone wants her out of the way. Will Max be able to protect her, or will she suffer the same fate as her father?
Is it worth buying?
Yes. Either as part of the series or just for someone wanting to read a good contemporary romance novel. Suspense is carefully strung out to pull the reader along. Just don't expect a surprise ending. Hope that helps a little with the decision.
Book #2 in the Bullet Catcher's.......2007-06-27
Wonderful read! Fast paced, starts right off and goes. Well written and edited. Sizzling romance. Gosh, the bigger and meaner they are, the bigger they fall. Glad these two got their lives back on tract. What a story. If you like bodyguard tough guys and girls that are not totally helpless, with action, thriller-type, mystery, drama and steamy scenes, you'll enjoy this easy to read book.
This bullet is gold!.......2007-03-09
When her father is killed in a DEA bust gone bad, a guilt ridden Cori blames her lover, DEA agent Max Roper and dumps him. Several years later, the two are reunited when Cori hires an elite bodyguard group to provide protection while she investigates the possible murder of her much older wealthy husband. No one is more surprised than Cori when she discovers that Max is the man who is sworn to protect her. But who will protect Cori's heart from the only man she's ever really loved, who's assigned to both protect her and determine if she had a role in her husband's murder?
Full of sizzling love scenes and great bantering between the two protagonists, St. Claire's second entry in the Bullet Catcher series has equal parts romance, intrigue, and sensuality to sustain the reader's attention and waiting impatiently for the next intallment in the series. But I could have done without the epilogue, which added nothing at all to the story (in fact, I found it detracted). Too many authors are using them to do nothing but plug their next book.
Kept Me Reading!.......2006-09-25
I'm not typically a romantic suspense fan, but this book wowed me! The characters are so easy to fall in love with, and the writing makes each scene easy to picture.
I look forward to the next installment of the Bullet Catchers series!
Hot and Sexy thrill ride.......2006-09-22
I loved it. Ms. St. Claire promises to Thrill You to Death and delivers. Max is a hero to die for. He could watch my back anytime.

Book Description
This guide to the spiritual landscape of Taoism not only introduces the important events in the history of Taoism, the sages who wrote the Taoist texts, and the various schools of Taoist thinking, but also gives the reader a feel for what it means to practice Taoism today. The book is divided into three parts: "The History of Taoism" traces the development of the tradition from the shamans of prehistoric China through the classical period (including the teachings of the famous sage Lao-tzu), the beginnings of Taoism as a religion, the rise of mystical and alchemical Taoism, and the synthesis of Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. "Systems of Taoism" explores magical sects, divination practices, devotional ceremonies, internal alchemy, and the way of right action. "Taoist Practices" discusses meditation, techniques of cultivating the body, and rites of purification, ceremony, and talismanic magic. A comprehensive bibliography for further study completes this valuable reference work.
Customer Reviews:
Uninspired introduction.......2007-09-27
Author Eva Wong notes in the Introduction to her survey of Taoism that by design guides are not complete. Once you've dipped into this volume, you'll quickly find exactly what's missing.
Ms Wong appears well read on Taoism and provides a fine bibliography, from which nearly any selection is bound to be more lively than this cadaverous, book-length encyclopedia entry. Here Ms Wong has taken one of the world's great philosophical and religious traditions and turned it into a parched prose recitation of lists - historical periods, great thinkers and leaders, philosophies, practices. A typical example from page 130 reads like this:
================================
The Nine Palaces is the pa-k'ua set in motion. With the Nine Palaces, the trigrams of the pa-k'ua are no longer tied to a direction. Their positions will move according to the cycles of the year, month, day and season. The Nine Palaces are the eight directions and the center. Each palace is designated by a pair of number and color. They are one-white, two-black, three-jade, four-green, five-yellow, six-white, seven-red, eight-white, and nine-purple. Each number-color combination is called a star, and each star is associated with a trigram in the pa-k'ua. Thus, one-white is k'an (water), two-black is k'un (earth), three-jade is chen (thunder), four-green is sun (wind), five-yellow is the center (chung-kung), six-white is ch'ien (sky), seven-red is tui (lake), eight-white is ken (mountain), and nine-purple is li (fire) The numbers in the following grid illustrate the "root structure" of the Nine Palaces:
4 9 2
3 5 7
8 1 6
The root arrangement is also known as the Magic Circle, because the numbers are so arranged that the rows, columns, and diagonals all add up to fifteen. In the root structure of the Nine Palaces, five is always located in the center. The root structure of the Nine Palaces is also the Later Heaven pa-k'ua.
================================
There's not a spark of life in this text, no hint that Ms Wong is fascinated by the Tao, that she shares any of the awe and wonder that inspire and inspired the subjects over which she labors. In her Introduction she notes that a good guide provokes interest and inspires further research. This guide makes you wish you hadn't taken the trip.
For a more interesting and enlightening introduction to the subject, try Alan Watts' What Is Tao?

A painful reading experience.......2007-07-17
I don't know what Eva Wong was thinking when she wrote this. Although her style of writing was painful to read, I finished the entire book and by the end I realized it wasn't worth it. It's hard to follow her style of writing and she drops so many names and dates that you get lost in her sentences.
You will not get any insight into taoist philosophy and thought by reading this tiresome book.
Shonky schoolarship.......2007-03-19
Eva Wong is quite generic in her approach to Taoism and the book reads like something written to make money. There is a lot of Chinese people out there seeking to cash in on the Western interest in Taoism. Due to the "Cultural Revolution", being of Chinese nationally is no longer a guarantee of knowledge of Chinese Culture, as most modern Chinese know little of Ancient Culture because the Communists where so effective in wiping it out. Her book covers an extremely broad overview of Taoism with almost no citations. I cannot know how many errors and assumtions she makes in her book, but as far has her information on Ba kua zhang and internal martial arts in general, I would not trust a word she has to say. I suspect that she is coming from a Post-Communist "Wu shu" perpective that has very little creditality with tradional Chinese martial artists. If you want to get a general overview of Taoism you would be far better off reading Liva Kohn's works on the subject.
Very Thorough and Easy to Read.......2006-02-23
This is a great book for someone who is researching Taoism. I would recommend reading the Tao Te Ching first, because this book will make a lot more sense once you've read the most important Taoist text. The book is very thorough. The one area it is a bit vague on is religious Taoism and how it is practiced. This didn't really upset me too much because I was more interested in Philosophical Taoism.
Comprehensive and serious introduction to Taoism.......2004-09-24
Those new to Taoism, or confused by it, will almost certainly find Eva Wong's book immensely helpful. It immediately addresses the problems most people experience when they first become interested in this tradition, i.e. "Why do there seem to be so many different versions of Taoism, some of them quite contradictory? What are the differences and similarities between these 'schools' and how did they arise? If someone is 'practicing Taoism' today, what does that actually mean?" By dividing her book into three sections - History of Taoism, Systems of Taoism, and Taoist Practices - Wong clearly articulates the development and varieties of Taoist thought, its key figures, texts, beliefs, concepts, principles and practices. She does this in short, well-focused chapters, and uses a very clear and concise style. Each chapter ends with a "Further Readings" section offering what I've found to be very useful pointers into the immense body of Taoist literature, sometimes even referring to specific chapters of books and pointing out which ones are more general or more academic, and which translations she prefers. Wong also includes a detailed index, a solid bibliography, and two useful appendices containing a map of China and a chronology of the dynasties. What you won't find here is the kind of nonsense that plagues so many books about ancient traditions that have recently become more popular - Wong gives you no detailed instruction on how to conduct ceremonies or create talismans or wield "magic". Rather, she respects Taoism as a serious and living tradition and recommends that if you are interested in learning the specifics of any particular Taoist sect then you must find a Taoist master and complete the necessary training. Wong refuses to treat Taoism as a New Age novelty. Moreover, her honesty about the limits and relativity of her work is admirable. As she notes at the outset, she is acting here as a guide: someone who offers knowledge arising out of personal experience; who offers a perspective, not necessarily rigorous objectivity; and who does not pretend that what she is saying can ever be complete. Having said that, I think Wong's book comes as close as you're likely to get to a comprehensive introductory text. It certainly answered all of my questions.

Customer Reviews:
Great Baja-style cuisine.......2004-05-07
The food in this book is excellent. As an almost-native San Diegan who has moved away, I depend on this book to help me make the Baja-style food that I love. I particularly like the Carnitas and the Chicken Enchiladas Verdes. Whenever I make carnitas, my guests just rave! The portions are somewhat large, so have a party or do what I often do - eat carnitas scrambled into eggs, made into quesadillas, etc. My only issue with this book is that there are a few technical mistakes(i.e. wrong page numbers, etc.). However, this is easy to overlook. Enjoy!
Hardly Mexican Cuisine.......2003-04-01
I was so disappointed in this book, especially after reading the reviews of others. Perhaps the author wrote the book for people who have no access to ingredients typically used in Mexican cookery, which 10 years ago might have been somewhat an excuse, but today, authentic Mexican ingredients are widely available. To those interested in real Mexican cuisine, there are much better choices, with this caveat; it's really too bad the author chose not to give us authentic recipes, as the cooking in this particular region of Mexico has not been covered well, and I have searched extensively.
You'll Be Glad You Have It.......1999-09-10
The student and traveler to Mexico often returns home craving the tastes they experienced in Baja California. Ann's cookbook will compliment anyone's kitchen. From the appetizers to the salsas to the carnitas to the margaritas, with a little musica norteña, una fría and this cookbook, you can have a 'virtual' visit to Baja California. Recommended.
Best Mexican Food.......1999-08-12
The receipes are great. The only care to take is that the portions are big. The stories are great.
A joyous celebration of the culture and cuisine of Baja.......1999-01-02
This book should be purchased in threes; one for your kitchen, one for your coffee table, and one to take apart so that you can frame the illustrations. The recipes are simple to prepare and the results are SENSATIONAL! It is truly a gorgeous celebration of the flavors of Baja California: gastronomic and cultural. Take it along as a guidebook, too, if you want to explore Hazard's inspirations.

Customer Reviews:
See the World by Bus - A Visual Feast!.......2001-07-26
Whether you are interested in toy vehicles or real buses, this book offers a feast for the eyes. An astounding array of model buses from some 20 nations - diecast, plastic, tin-plate, and cardboard - awaits you; the material is extremely captivating. But beware, if you do not already collect model buses, you may find yourself doing so after perusing this book. Also included are many antique and rare models one doesn't see all the time. Granted, not every model is included and the survey could be a little stronger regarding models from the former Soviet Union. Nevertheless, this book has a lot to offer and I heartily recommend it to anyone with more than a passing interest in buses.

Really practical advice - excellent.......2000-04-27
I got this book when I started working at home and faced the problem of turning a typical family house into an office/working/living area without being able to magic up a couple of new rooms. It turned out to be a perfect choice becaue it is absolutely practical, yet doesn't compromise on style. Its helped me turn my three-up two-down conventional family house into a much more flexible and beutiful place for living. If you are not totally happy with the way your home works, but don't want to do anything as drastic as move - I recommend you take a look at what this book has to say.

Very useful.......2005-04-26
This text was very useful in a graphic design class I recently took. Color and black & white illustrations or images, explanations were easy to understand, and fairly good read. This is not a how-to book, but a good reference for the foundation of good design. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the history of graphic art, and how those actions are still in active use today.
A Graphic Designer's MUST HAVE!.......2003-01-22
Louis Ocepek is a designer's designer. He's a painter that designs, a designer that teaches, and a teacher that writes. In short, he's a true Renaissance Man. His method, craft, teaching, and art have been the inspiration for some of the greatest designers around the country. I'm proud to say I was Louis' student at New Mexico State University. For me and my fellow NMSU design grads it's a mark of pride to work under one of our time's greatest designers. Now, he's chosen to pass on his knowledge in the form of this great book. If you were looking for the best way to know the design techniques of the masters -- you've found it. -Michael Critz, Art Director, KVIA-TV ABC-7 El Paso, TX
