Book Description
This is the fifth book of the series that began with "Mostly True Collected Stories & Drawings". Brian has continued the journey, weaving humor and poignance in his stories and drawings including 'No Regret' ("I sometimes wake in the early morning & listen to the soft breathing of my children & I think to myself, this is one thing I'll never regret & I carry that quiet with me all day long").

Book Description
“As perfect as the beads of a rosary.”
–Sandra Cisneros, author of The House on Mango Street
“Fresh, magical, beautiful, evocative” says Lisa See, about this wonderful first novel by Alex Espinoza. Still Water Saints chronicles a momentous year in the life of Agua Mansa, a largely Latino town beyond the fringes of Los Angeles and home to the Botánica Oshún, where people come seeking charms, herbs, and candles. Above all, they seek the guidance of Perla Portillo, the shop’s owner. Perla has served the community for years, arming her clients with the tools to overcome all manner of crises, large and small. There is Juan, a man coming to terms with the death of his father; Nancy, a recently married schoolteacher; Shawn, an addict looking for peace in his chaotic life; and Rosa, a teenager trying to lose weight and find herself. But when a customer with a troubled and mysterious past arrives, Perla struggles to help and must confront both her unfulfilled hopes and doubts about her place in a rapidly changing world.
Imaginative, inspiring, lyrical, and beautifully written, Still Water Saints evokes the unpredictability of life and the resilience of the spirit through the journeys of the people of Agua Mansa, and especially of the one woman at the center of it all. Theirs are stories of faith and betrayal, love and loss, the bonds of family and community, and the constancy of change.

Excellent.......2007-07-13
I picked this book up while on a trip to Santa Barbara. When I saw the cover and the title it drew me in. I then read the authors bio and I discovered that he was from La Puente. La Puente is my city a place like Agua Mansa with characters and people from all paths of life that often are missing from literature. I was pleasantly surprise to see these characters brought to life through their everyday mishaps and ritualistic ways by Alex Espinoza. This book is a must read. The author does a great job of taking the reader through a roller coaster of emotions through the spiritual and challenging world of its characters.
Fantastic New Voice!.......2007-05-21
Gripping. A tantalizing view into a world I knew nothing about. Alex Espinoza made me see the world differently. A welcomed new literal author to a world filled with commercialism. I want to go back to Agua Mansa. I wanted to stay but there was no more. I spoke to the author; he's humble and grateful about filling my world with awe. His answer, "Thank you so much for the kind words regarding my book; it is a big compliment when people react the way you do."
This novel's not for the faint of heart; it is filled with elements that may shock you, but the way Alex raps the characters in a mantra of words you swear they are real folks, everyday people you knew nothing about, peppered with delightful insights into quirky lives not everyone's privileged to see.
The Botánica Oshún's a place I want to visit. Teaming with worldly and unworldly oddities. The connection to the unworldly is always around us but we do not see it. Most of us walk this Earth in a fog, neglecting to fan the watery veil to see beyond. If I was a believer before, this cements my pathetic insight to something beyond biological--we've all experienced the warnings, the déjà vu, the "oh had I done it this way," the thought of someone close and the phone rings and it's them on the other end. Confess, we've all been touched by the supernatural and we were all dismissive, calling it `weird'. I was half way through, went to the market and then bought a candle. I lit it. It stayed lit until I finished the book.
Every chapter took me into a different direction--a different life with a different viewpoint. He (Alex) switches from third person to first with such ease that it threw me the first few chapters. Then I understood why he did it. His motives were to make the reader become the character; to feel, taste, hear, smell the things that character did. I understood for the first time --if only briefly--what it was like to be a woman, a man, a junky, a girl, a transgender, a boy lost in a world desperate to get out of only to find there were more traps ahead. These traps that ensnare without conjecture, that thrive on repeatedly drowning those who are pure of heart and those who are not. I felt like a slave, yet I also felt like an artist, a caregiver, a thief, a prostitute, a mere mortal denied the right to know more about the spiritual: A believer that could see but was blind to his/her surroundings. I dare not say more for fear a curse may fall upon me. I better go buy another candle.
Thanks Alex for the ride. I'm waiting for your next novel. And if you find it in your heart to go back to Agua Mansa, take me with you. Please.
A Work of Art.......2007-04-09
Alex Espinoza is a true literary genius. Still Water Saints is an inspiring and thought provoking masterpiece. Highly recommended.

Interesting.......2007-01-26
I found the description of this book interesting, and decided to purchase it. Initially, it held my interest, but the story was slow after the fourth chapter. It did not hold my interest, and I read the book just to complete it. The characters were shallow, and the end was predictable.
STILL WATERS.......2006-09-09
STILL WATERS was a great book! I thought it really showed what goes on in a marriage, that it is not always a bed of roses! The way PATRICIA HALEY, got to the heart of the marriage problems that so many marriages today face, and have been for so many years. This book was really helpful to me, and so many others to! Big ups to PATRICIA HALEY! GOD BLESS!
A good friend.......2006-03-22
Laurie had me all the way up until she lied to her husband and then turned around and told him the truth. Girl, if you are going to lie keep up with it. She was tring to lose her husband. She mad so many mistakes. I wanted to jump in the book and give her a woman to woman talk. Sometimes you have to let the worst come out to get the best. YESHUA/JESUS came when eveything was in complete chaos. I love this story. It gave me a chance to see how other women would handle a tight situation. She kept me from making the same mistake. I hope all women that read this book feel the same as I do. Eventhough she didn't go through with the meeting, she still was cheating on her husband. In GOD'S eyes, anyone that is not the one HE assign you to is cheating. In love you'll find a lot of hurt, but also the hurt has to be accompanied with joy (when you are in CHRIST). Love is a whole lot of hurt, but in the end is a whole lot of fun. Laurie went through what all women is CHRIST go through. It is call FAITH. When the going is gone, GOD is on.
Great Book.......2006-02-24
Patricia Haley is one of my favorite authors. After reading "No Regrets", I had to find everything that she wrote. She writes about real issues that plagues the Christians of today! I've recommended her books to several of my friends and their lives have been touched also. This book once again shows how "there is nothing that is too hard for God to handle". He can come in and change a thing just like that.
If you are looking for a great book that is not only a good read, but perhaps will touch your life, this is the book to read. You will not be dissappointed.
The Plot Thickens from Page One!.......2006-01-06
Domestic violence, attempted suicide, a marriage on the rocks and dangerous family secrets...and that's just the first few chapters of Patricia Haley's new novel, STILL WATERS!

Despite Greg's faults and despite the way he was raised by his father, the less than Honorable Judge Wright, Greg strives to be a good father and husband. However, the stress of being the sole bread winner and provider for his family has taken an emotional toll on Greg. Depression and thoughts of suicide seem to be the only way out for Greg. However, no matter what it looks like, Greg loves his family and is determined to be the kind of father he never had.
When a dream job in Chicago becomes available, both Laurie and Greg feel like it is the answer to all their prayers. With Greg working out of town, Laurie begins to come into her own. Laurie's new found independence and recent weight loss cause her to look for affection and attention elsewhere. Greg's new job and improved financial status lead him to believe that whatever problems may have existed in his marriage will be resolved once his family relocates to Chicago with him. However, Greg quickly learns that money is not the only threat facing his marriage. Still Waters is a deeply moving novel. The characters and the storyline remind us that forgiveness and unconditional love are crucial to any relationship.

A standout amid a crowded genre.......1997-12-01
This is a gem of a mystery in the amateur-female gumshoe field. Tucker has fashioned a solid, engrossing plot, a unique setting (rural and borderline redneck Ohio), a small cast of believable characters, and a strong, distinctive heroine. It's one of the few mysteries I've read that don't overwhelm you with too many red herrings, yet present just enough information to make the puzzle challenging. It even has a great canine character too!

Finally, a book that offers frank, humorous, sensitive yet unblushing, biblically grounded answers to the real-life, nitty-gritty private questions that Christians are asking about sex—even the questions they are afraid to ask!
Customer Reviews:
A good reference book..........2007-08-14
I discovered this book at a deep discount, and having read the McBurney's "Real Sex" column in Marriage Partnership magazine for the past several years, I decided to give it a try. Though I have a few critiques, I was generally pleased with this book.
There are several significant strengths of this book. The McBurneys are obviously experienced Christian sex counselors. They cover a host of sex topics, ranging from the obvious to the seemingly minor (though still important). A quick perusal of the table of contents provides a sense of the huge scope of this book.
In each chapter, they provide helpful information in a rather standard form, and they also sprinkle Q&A's throughout the text. This does disrupt the flow of each chapter, but it also keeps it from getting monotonous. I might have preferred the Q&A at the end of each chapter, but that was not a huge issue.
They are extremely frank, and this will undoubtedly make some folks a bit uncomfortable, but this type of forthright reflection is absolutely vital to the important information that they have to offer and understandable coming from authors who talk about sex with others every day. They are very open about their personal sex lives, but it never felt inappropriate, just helpful. And in the midst of this blunt sex talk, they always remained faithful to biblical teaching.
My critiques are twofold. First, I wish that they offered a slightly more critical analysis of some important issues like birth control. Throughout the book, they explain that many birth control options are readily available and effective, without even considering the idea that at least some of those options are abortifacient. I wasn't expecting them to take an anti-birth control perspective, but I was disappointed that they didn't seem to bat an eye at any type of birth control, no matter how invasive and potentially life-ending.
My other issue was that the book was not organized in a very readable fashion. That's why I'd describe it best as a reference book, which might be helpful to refer to when problems or questions arise. But to sit down and read through it was somewhat laborious, and the order of topics led to a somewhat depressing ending. It almost felt like reading a textbook, which is informative but not much fun.
The McBurneys have an awesome vision for what sex can and should be, as created by God. And they do us a favor by offering their insights and perspectives so comprehensively in this book. There are other books that are easier to read, but this is a good one to have on your shelf as a place to turn for some help.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

There are also quite a few nouveau nature screens (dolphins, parrots, seascapes, tropical fish, etc), which is not surprising considering that this is the "Fort Lauderdale" edition. I was really impressed with the "Grand Entryways" and "Abstractions" sections; some of the designs are truly amazing.
The book has 78 pages, and every other page is jammed packed with photographs of actual stained glass windows, doorways, and transoms. The photos are all extremely well done and inspiring. The other pages are filled with scaled patterns. I especially liked the fact that all of the patterns are shaded to indicate colors and textures. Two negatives about the book are: 1) not all of the scaled patterns have a corresponding photo of the completed panel, and not all of the photos have corresponding scaled patterns (this gets very confusing a times) and 2) the binding is of a poor quality (the pages started to fall out almost immediately).
Book Description
Simply Zen shows how a traditional Japanese approach can be adapted to produce a tranquil, spiritually nourishing home or garden. The book begins with the fundamentals of Zen design; continues with a look at Zen interiors; and concludes with a survey of Zen gardens. This inspiring guide for applying Zen ideals to the western home and garden includes 125 color photographs in addition to a resource section listing architects, designers, and suppliers.

I Turned Around and Fell in Love.......2001-06-19
When I realized I had borrowed this book 6 times from the local library I decided it was time to buy it. Not encyclopedic, but captures the spirit and the tone with lots of nice ideas to fit into whatever you are doing at the moment. Graceful and thought provoking with beautiful pictures. This is not step-by-step how-to-look-Zen. This is how Zen feels when it touches the things around you.
Great background info on the concepts of Zen decorating.......2000-01-29
As a beginner decorator in Zen design, this booked helped me understand the concept behind why Zen is Zen, and how I can incorporate this into my home decorating. If you want a more indepth look at the meaning behind Zen decorating, while giving you ideas along the way, this is the book for you.
Nice but does not help the lay person with decorating ideas........1999-11-25
Some nice pictures and does provide the Zen philosophy, but cannot be used to provide ideas nor gives a "how-to" to implement the Zen design into your home environment.
