Book Description

The Hermetica are a body of mystical texts written in late antiquity, but believed during the Renaissance (when they became well known) to be much older. Their supposed author, a mythical figure named Hermes Trismegistus, was thought to be a contemporary of Moses. The Hermetic philosophy was regarded as an ancient theology, parallel to the revealed wisdom of the Bible, supporting Biblical revelation and culminating in the Platonic philosophical tradition. This new translation is the only English version based on reliable texts, and Professor Copenhaver's introduction and notes make this accessible and up-to-date edition an indispensable resource to scholars.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, could have been better..........2007-09-26

Copenhaver's new edition and translation of the Greek corpus hermeticum and the Latin Asclepius provide the interested reader with an immensely readable and professionally done English translation, as well as a solid introduction and copious notes.

Copenhaver intends to replace Scott's classic edition and translation, and claims to improve upon what he sees as the rather idiosyncratic Greek and Latin texts which Scott put together and from which he translates. But the extent to which he succeeds is difficult to judge--read on.

The one, major drawback of this volume is that while Copenhaver offers extensive endnotes which fill in--to some extent--for a full critical apparatus, he does not give us the Greek and Latin texts. Without these, it is difficult for a professional scholar or an informed general reader to evaluate Copenhaver's work for him/herself.

In fairness to Copenhaver, it was never his intent to produce a work that could be used in the way I describe. In one sense, then, he succeeds magnificently at what he set out to do. But the addition of facing page texts in the original languages (provided in Scott's classic edition) would have made this book much, much better--and much more useful to a wider audience. Although the size of such an audience is not exactly vast, it may well be greater than Copenhaver imagined.

In short, it's an excellent text for anyone interested in the Hermetica who does not read Greek or Latin. It is a very good text for students and scholars who will find much in Copenhaver's insightful editing, translation, and commentary, but may feel disappointment over the missing original texts and will only be able to use it within its obvious limitations. If he ever puts out a fuller edition with the Greek and Latin, I'll be first in line to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A Western Spiritual Classic.......2007-09-08

Modern "occult" and "channeled" works pale before the spiritual sublimity of this all-time Greco-Egyptian classic. In my opinion the Corpus Hermeticum is one of the most galvanizing expressions of spirituality to emerge from the Western tradition (along with Plotinus' Enneads). This is a superb translation of an amazing ancient text.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent scholarly collection of the Hermetic Corpus.......2006-11-18

The Hermetica is a corpus of mystical-theological-philosophical literature on diverse themes which was originally believed to have been supernatural wisdom passed down to man by the mysterious Egyptian deity Thoth. It was initially thought these works pre-dated the Bible and also the works of Plato and Aristotle, though it is now accepted they were written in about the 3rd century CE.

The Hermetica contain thirteen diverse discourses between divine figures or teachers and various initiates. They cover several themes, including God and his relationship to humans, the relationship between the world and the divine, practices of mystery religions, the nature of true reality, mystical Gnosis and ethics. At times the literature can rise to beautiful heights, but at many others it is deeply incoherent and overall, the Corpus is not self-consistent and often contains contradictory notions about the world and the divine.

Nevertheless it is an important document from the ancient world and worth studying by anyone interested in this time.

5 out of 5 stars better than Scott's.......2005-07-02

Although I enjoy the poetic spirit of Walter Scott's translation, this is undeniably a superior translation and is important for reasons aptly mentioned by other reviewers. I think this is the definitive translation. Superb.

5 out of 5 stars Worth a lifetime of study.......2004-01-20

This is a fantastic translation of the Pymander or Corpus Hermeticum and Asclepius. Since it's the only one I've read, I don't know how to compare it to others. This text was apparently rediscovered by the court of Cosimo di Medici in the 1400's, probably obtained from some source in Harran. Texts such as this were at the forefront of the syncretic mysticism and platonic/classical revival of the Italian Renaissance. This text might be something like a pagan hellenistic answer to scriptures or very obscure mystical and gnostic texts which describe very esoteric ideas that can only be understood through some kind of experience. On many levels it is very compatible with Christianity, Judaism or Islam because it may represent a kind of philosophical precursor of these religions from late antiquity. Even many of the early patriarchs of the orthodox christian tradition understood this compatibility and considered this text to represent a kind of sanctified pagan tradition or philosophy of sorts, which they actually used as proof of the validity of christianity. They did this by arguing that since pagans could come up with ideas so close to christianity, that this supported a belief in the new faith. For this reason, on the level of mundane theological and philosophical history, this text is very important for an understanding of how early christians and other monotheists viewed their relationship to paganism in a world that was still very pagan. The notes in this book are also extremely helpful and worthwhile.

3 out of 5 stars Emphasis on detail.......2003-05-17

The Secret Clan: Hidden Heiress is masterfully put together by author Amanda Scott. Weaving faeries, falconry, and mortal romance this story is a slow-paced but satisfying read.
Acting as a spy Patrick finds himself searching for the missing heiress Bessie, who everyone assumes is dead. His chance meeting of Elspeth while hiding from pursuers brings him to Farnsworth Tower, where he takes up the post of falconer. Ms. Scot's meticulous attention to detail on the training of the falcon is thorough and complete. It is one of many ways the authenticity of the times comes to life on the pages of this book.

Elspeth is a maidservant and mistreated by her "step-sisters", much like Cinderella, with even one sister named Drusilla, a great name choice for this very annoying character. She has no memory of her well-born status prior to life at Farnsworth.

This book moves two mortals' paths by a magic they are unaware of. The Faerie element is entertaining and lends comic relief to an otherwise serious toned story.

The sequel to ABDUCTED HEIRESS, this book stands alone as a good read. It's slow-moving pace, with an emphasis on detail rather than on conflict makes it a sleeper hit for those looking for a quiet read.

2 out of 5 stars Trite, traditional, turgid and tame.......2003-03-25

I could not agree more with the Publishers Weekly review listed above. This book never really takes off at all on a number of really glaring levels if this is supposed to be a 'romance.'

It is clear from the start that Elspeth and Patrick are destined to fall in love, so since it is all magic, there is little suspense or romantic tension. I would have loved to see some sizzle!

The only sizzle are the copulating supernatural characters sucking each other's toes, and the eagerly swiving King James fondling every wench in sight when his lairds are all rebelling. Not too thrilling.

Even worse is to come, however! I can see that the author is setting up for the next book in the series by introducing Patrick's sister Bab and her would-be suitor Alex, (no suspense there, eh?) but it kills the romance to have Patrick treating Elspeth the same as his sister, and constantly threatening to spank her like a two-year old.

Likewise his seemingly unrequited passion for his best friend Fin's wife Molly detracts from his romance for Elspeth. Sorry, but it makes it much more gripping to have only one couple in a romance, with some real spark, not three of four with none.

On a practical level, the fact that Elspeth is known as Beth, Bethie, Bessie, and Elizabeth as well makes for confusion. The reams of information on how to train a hawk are interesting but really not romantic at all.

There is no believable affection or heat between Patrick and Elspeth, and his accent shifts from the King's English right the way to Gaelic so often it is a wonder she could ever posibly trust him to get close to him, let alone understand half of what he is going on about.

All of the characters are one-dimensional-the equivalent of the evil step mother and two step sisters, the decent guardian who is completely ineffectual against them. Out of the whole vast cast of characters, no one jumps out at us.

It is a totally unsexy version of Cinderella. Any of the suspenseful bits, for example the supposedly exceedingly nasty Earl of Angus who completely drops out of the picture once Elspeth's mother Nell escapes, and the whole danger of Elspeth being killed, are badly mishandled and thus not effective.

Even the supernatural elements become, not magical or romantic, but silly and absurd.

This author has some very good ideas, but gets so bogged down in details and plot she forgets we are supposed to have some characters that we really want to care about and root for to the happy ever after ending.

As a light read, it could be fine, but tipping the scale at four hundred pages or so, you really need to have stamina, a huge tolerance for boredom and saccharine 'romance', and nothing else to do with your time.

    5 out of 5 stars My favorite!.......2003-02-11

This is the first book I ever read by Amanda Scott. While I have read many since and loved each of them -this remains my favorite. It has such a neat feel to it - Amanda Scott is such a gifted story teller. What I love about Ms. Scott's heroines is that they aren't pouty, as romantic novel heroines can often be. They don't throw tantrums and run off and make the guy chase after them, nor do show their "strength" and argue every trifle little detail with their guy (I read one called Golden Lasso or something like that where the girl just wouldn't stop shouting: a must-miss that just made women look bad). Her girls are just strong women who know what they want and go about it in a great way and you really wind up rooting for them. I don't read romance novels that often, but I admit I'm hooked on Amanda Scott's books. As I said, this one is my favorite! (But all of her books are fantastic. Read them - you'll be so happy you did!)

5 out of 5 stars exciting sixteenth century romantic suspense.......2002-08-18

In 1540 Scotland, following the King taking hostage his liege, Patrick MacRae risks his life for what he feels is the good of his country. He spies for Cardinal Beaton while searching for the missing heiress Bessie, assumed dead by most people. Lord Angus abducted Bessie and her sister years ago with the sibling Molly having just surfaced.

In the woods with dogs at his heels, Patrick meets Elspeth. She helps him escape the hounds and the owners chasing after him and gives him a tip on how he can hide in plain sight. He obtains a job as a falconer at the same estate where Elspeth lives. As Patrick and Elspeth work together, though both remain wary of the other, they fall in love. Now if he can uncover her deepest secret, hidden even from herself, he might stop a nasty plot that will affect the well being of Scotland.

The sequel to the ABDUCTED HEIRESS, THE SECRET CLAN: HIDDEN HEIRESS is an exciting sixteenth century work of romantic suspense. The story line provides readers with a feel for the intrigue of the era as well as furnishing a strong romance between two cautious individuals. Amanda Scott's latest Scottish historical tale is a wonderful novel that fans will take much pleasure in and expect more return trips to the same time and place.

    5 out of 5 stars A captivating read -- Very highly recommended.......2002-07-21

In 1540, citizens on the borders of England and Scotland find their alliances sorely questioned. To assure his position, King James takes Patrick MacRae's liege Mackenzie of Kintail hostage. In exchange for Kin's eventual release, Patrick risks his life to spy for Cardinal Beaton while quietly searching for the missing heiress Bessie, whom most assume to be dead.

At every opportunity, Elspeth escapes the drudgery of Farnsworth Tower to enjoy the solitude of the woods. She has no memory of her well-born status or the life she might have led. Instead, she spends her days in service to the family that raised her. Then an unexpected encounter with a stranger fleeing the baying of dogs transforms her life. She leads him to safety, and provides information that opens the opportunity for Patrick to become the falconer for Farnsworth Tower.

Through most of their adventure, Elspeth and Patrick are unaware of the well-intentioned magical help they receive. Nor does Elspeth recall the secret sign from her mother that provides a link to her true birth and her link to the Secret Clan. This marvelous supernatural element provides both comic relief and zest to bring this romance charmingly alive.

The sequel to ABDUCTED HEIRESS, Amanda Scott's HIDDEN HEIRESS will delight fans of the Highlands and all things fae. Scott's characterizations are richly developed and endearing, her prose so natural that it seems to as if you are witnessing the story rather than reading about it. Both Elspeth and Patrick struggle with misplaced loyalties, lending both fascinating conflict and opportunity for character growth. In addition, Elspeth's story echoes the traditional Cinderella tale with unusual twists that lend it striking originality. Patrick's gift for falconry, with unwitting assistance of a magical nature, also provides an unusual yet fascinating element. Indeed, Scott's seamless blending of historical detail, stunning characterizations and intervention of a magical nature, for both good and ill, all combine in a memorable tale that earns its place on the keeper shelf. Very highly recommended.

A Ken MacLeod book is like a crowded college coffeehouse: noisy, bustling, a little rowdy, and packed with enough wild ideas and competing ideologies to leave you reeling. Star Fraction, MacLeod's 1995 debut, is no exception. As the first installment in the Fall Revolution sequence (followed by The Stone Canal and The Cassini Division), Star Fraction established this Scottish author's formidable talent for mixing complex politics and cyberpunk action into smart, funny stories.

MacLeod avoids heady political theorizing by always personifying his ideas in believable, often articulately passionate characters. (Or as one character puts it, "In my experience politics is guys with guns ripping me off at roadblocks.") Star Fraction's putative protagonists--a Trotskyite mercenary, a fugitive university researcher, and a fundamentalist-turned-atheist programmer--are on the run after a chance combination of marijuana, experimental memory drugs, and a self-aware firearm threatens to awaken a powerful AI on the nets, much to the dismay of the Men In Black and the orbital-laser-wielding U.S./UN. (As with all MacLeod plots, don't bother asking--it's a long story.)

With its ultrabalkanized UK and convoluted cast of neo-Stalinists, AI-Abolitionists, Christianarchists, femininists, et al., Star Fraction is MacLeod at his best--even at his first. --Paul Hughes

In this fragmented and fractured world artificial intelligence research is no-no, at least mostly, as far as the everyday people go.

A mercenary and a couple of others from one of these micro-organisations get involved in a plot involving some fancy financial software and other problems, not least of which is their own gear.

MacLeod's element of taking the piss is certainly in evidence here.

4 out of 5 stars Very imaginative and thought-provoking.......2003-06-21

First of all, I do recommend this book to everybody that enjoys some near-future what-if books that mixes politics, artificial intelligence possibilities, and loads of technology.

The good things about it would first be the ability to really shape a very interesting reality, very well built characters, many thought-provoking discussions, in the political, social and technological fields. In a way the story is very believable (maybe not in 40 years), and very fast paced.

Now the reason why I didn't rate it a 5 stars is that sometimes it becomes too "thick". Too many things happen without much explanation, and the author seems to be looking for that. I remember finishing the first chapter of the book and just thinking to myself "What? What is going on here?". Little by little you start to get used to the acronyms, the political system, and the pace of the book and then it becomes really interesting. Just be ready for this "shock" if you plan on reading it.

For now I'll move into a new book and then go back and read another of his Fall Revolution series books. Now that I know what he is talking about maybe it will be easier to finish the next one.

4 out of 5 stars The Star Fraction - A somewhat lackluster beginning!.......2003-02-02

I believe that I originally found Ken MaCleod's "Cosmonaut Keep" on the bookshelf at a store and found the description for it to be extraordinarily interesting. That being said, I decided to research and find out what the authors first book was. Upon discovering the Fall Revolution Sequence did not have to be read in any particular order, I decided to order and read the Star Fraction before the others, just to put my own sense of order to it.

Upon beginning this book, I found that a sense of order to the book itself was to some extent difficult to discern. Bear in mind that in several sequences I found the author's style to actually be very exciting and captivating, which lends to the idea that his later books will be very exciting. For a huge portion of the book though, I found his writing style to be somewhat cryptic, plodding and convoluted in the set up of the action sequences. This book is replete with varying political and social views that at times will leave your head spinning as to which direction the book is taking you.

Overall, this novel for me was a worthwhile read, just not overly compelling. At some point in time, after some further reflection, I will pick up the next book, "The Stone Canal" and read it. The conclusion to this one just doesn't compel me to do so at this time.

        The premise: MINOR SPOILERS

This tome is about a dismal future of the early 2040's after a brief third world war, the US/UN has taken hegemony over a balkanized world. The Fall Revolution Sequence itself is an attempt to put an end to this new world order and reunify fragmented nations.

        A key player in the Fall Revolution is an extremely interesting character by the name of Moh Kohn. His father Josh Kohn was the one who wrote many of the revolutionary programs that runs the computers of this society, which play a key part in the society. Moh Kohn himself is a security mercenary, living in a commune who believes in many of the communist ideas. Through chance, he meets with Janis Taine, who is a scientist working on memory enhancing drugs. This meeting is what basically begins the Fall Revolution. {ssintrepid}

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good cyberpunk.......2002-11-10

Fast-paced and a fun read. All of the usual cyberpunk elements are there, with the addition of some complicated socialist politics. Long on action, short on characterization. Several different cultures that aren't explored in depth. Major historic events, any one of which would probably be a book in itself, that seem more like backdrop than real things happening to large numbers of people. (A major change in America happens just like that.) Like a lot of cyberpunk, the treatment of computers and AI is a bit too magical for my taste. But certainly good enough for an action movie - err, book.

3 out of 5 stars Average at best.......2002-06-27

I bought this book partly on the strength of the reviews on this site and the UK sister site (hmmmmmm), and the fact it kept appearing on my recommended list. However it did not live up to my (generally easily satisfied) expectations.
Let's be fair about this, some of the ideas and thought that evidently went into the creation of Star Fraction were impressive. It's the implementation that I've a problem with, and that made this book just another "also-ran".

The plot and character development felt rushed and erratic at times. At a few points I found myself wondering what was going to happen next, and asking myself if I really cared or not. It all felt a bit thin and two dimensional. Perhaps it was me, but I made an assumption that the length and detail at which the politics were explored would have some impact in the end-game. They didn't, unless I missed something blindingly obvious. Or perhaps that was the point - that the politics were irrelevant to the outcome (in which case, why bother with them at all).
I also thought that he failed to capture the 'feel' of north London, even allowing for the fact that it had become something of a splintered entity.

There were parts which reminded me of William Gibson, and a lot of the style was more than a little reminiscent of the great Iain M. Banks. I think that Ken would be better trying to concentrate on a style of his own and attempt to leave behind the large influence of other (and IMO, better) sci-fi authors.
I honestly believe this guy does have some talent, and this will flourish with a little more focus, but then ... what do I know.

5 out of 5 stars Go-To Cookbook for Texas Spectacular Food.......2001-02-03

This is just an outstanding cookbook, filled with info, unique recipes and sources for ingredients, and spectacular shots of finished dishes.

I keep making one new recipe after another for guests and compliments are on the high side of all fare I prepare and serve. Tried such creative dishes as: Cajun Sweet Potato and Sausage Casserole (becoming demanded regular at Thanksgiving);Honey-Glazed Apple-stuffed pork chops on black-eyed pea-sweet potato hash; Vine-Ripened Tomato Salad (served in a unique tower fashion) Grilled Snapper with black bean - roast banan mash, coconut serrano broth and mango-tortilla salad; Stacked Banana-Creme' Brulee Tostada.

But a few of the marvelous stuff in this volume. Listed a few to show how tempting they sound and their accompaniments. Not exactly quick or easy to make (most of them in this category) but for the medium to experienced home gourmet, these will give you that extraordinary zip to your dining experience.

Make these and you'll return to this one over and over as I continue to do.

5 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT book!.......1999-03-08

I finally received my copy of this book and immediately made some home made chili powder and had friends over for dinner the next weekend. Although some have made statments on how complex the recipes are, he is famous for a reason. AND, he has chosen to share some of his recipes that have made him and his restaurant famous.

                5 out of 5 stars I can't wait to try-out Stephan's wonderful recipes !.......1998-12-28

I got this book for Christmas, I have wanted it for months. Watching Stephan's cooking shows have inspired me to create some SouthWestern magic of my own. There are great recipes, pictures & very interesting background information...well rounded. I bet the dinner party I'm having in a few weeks will go off without a hitch, thanks to Stephan.

5 out of 5 stars Suddenly, My Favorite Cookbook.......1998-12-19

As a fairly serious cook who moved to Texas from the Midwest a couple of years ago, I've been intrigued by the "New Tastes" experienced in the better Texas or Tex-Mex restauarants I've visited. Trying to figure out how to prepare and blend ingredients I wasn't very familiar with has been complicated and time consuming. Stephen Pyles "New Tastes From Texas" has done more for my grasp of New Texas Cuisine than any other cookbook or resource I've read. In this book, Chef Pyles provides not only the basic preparations (pure chili powder, chili pastes, etc.) but also some of his very best recipes. Having recipes for Star Canyon's "Cowboy Ribeye", "Rock Shrimp Taquitos" and "Heaven and Hell Cake" are alone worthe price of the book. Buy it . . . you'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars Captures the flavors of Texas.......1998-11-24

I have enjoyed watching the PBS series and this companion cookbook really helps. The diverse recipes allow me to prepare the dishes for friends and family --- all with a real Texas taste. Chef Pyles provides all the detailed instructions needed for each recipe. The pictures are fabulous.

                        5 out of 5 stars Beginner's Guide by Experts.......2003-08-14

This is an awesome book; showing basic stitches in a clear, concise manner that is easy to follow and providing instructions for some terrific projects. The photos, which are very clear, of the stitches are step by step and the spiral binding lays flat (very important when trying to follow along). Great to start you off and to keep as a future reference. And, once you get the basics down, check at countrybumpkin.com for the magazine Inspirations which gives further projects building on the info in this book.

5 out of 5 stars An Ozzie gem.......2003-08-13

This small book out of Australia is a real gem. The front is full of embroidery stitches detailed in execution. The patterns follow. The key to many of these books is whether the book has nice, usable patterns that are adaptable, thorough in instruction & reproducible. I would say that this book fits all of these cases. While everything is geared to embroidery, crossing over to needlepoint (evenweave) would not be difficult though the book doesn't encourage it because there is another book aimed for that audience.

Typical patterns are: birds, a koala:-) and flowers. The use of colour is quite nice. The only downside, is unlike the Cross Stitch Bible by Jane Greenoff, this book does not help you in designing your own patterns. Still for the price you get allot of patterns and a good overall grounding in embroidery as it discusses the various wools and needles and transferring the patterns.

Good for beginners and those looking for some nice patterns with some atypical stitches.
