5 out of 5 stars This is the book we've been waiting for........2006-08-07

This is the one. This is THE book for the baby boom generation, 1946-1963. A must-read. This one picks up where Catcher in the Rye left off, after a half-century's break. This is Holden Caulfield in mid-life, at the precipice of old age, one foot in the tank. This book, Houseboating in the Ozarks, has the manic energy of the gospel of Mark, the kids' perspective of To Kill A Mockingbird, the whimsical "What's happening to me?" of Catcher in the Rye. And it provides no answers to anything, it just asks the usual questions. Like Saul Bellow's best stuff, this book might be summarized: "A guy wanders around." And the epilogue might be: "And then he stops." But along the way the main character, Christian Leonard Hooker, touches base with practically everything that happened in the sixties and seventies, before the Great Forgetting of the eighties & nineties. And his guiding angels are nine-year olds who know a lot more than he does. If you were born between 1946 and 1963, YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK. If you were born after 1963, you may want to read it just to see how screwed-up the baby boomers got to be. Those who don't understand history are condemned to repeat it. But a better quote is from Eric Hoffer: "In times of change, learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists."

5 out of 5 stars Midwest Coming of Age.......2006-07-22

Houseboating in The Ozarks is a really good, fun read! Chris Hooker is a middle-aged man who has traveled the world and gotten in trouble in most places he's lived, and is now vacationing with his 9-yr-old twins. They've decided to rent a houseboat on Table Rock Lake in Southeastern Missouri. Their travels to and from this location fill the book with reminiscences of Hooker's childhood, his parents and grandparents, baseball and all those things that 9-year-olds are so quickly bored with, unless they can see right there where they are what Dad's talking about. But the twins teach Hooker way more than he teaches them and his love for them grows with each minute, it seems. Chris Hooker himself is still in the process of growing up -- this book chronicles a summer of coming-of-age and confronting some of the demons he's courted and fought throughout his life. Their adventures and misadventures add up to a really good read that I highly recommend.
I grew up in the same small town as the author and currently live in Missouri, which stars in the book as location and one of the very interesting characters that populate the novel. I felt that Gary Forrester had written this book just for me, but I know that anyone who takes the time to explore Houseboating will enjoy it immensely.

4 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-05-07

I love this author. I enjoyed this book, as I enjoy all her works.

1 out of 5 stars Convoluted.......2007-02-06

This is the worst Medeiros book I've ever read. The basic premise of the story is not so bad. I wish she would re-write it. Neither of the main characters seem to know what they really want, especially the hero. They constantly go back and forth, hot and cold. The plot is convoluted with too many sub-plots. Then, it is not quite clear if Prudence is good looking or not. Everyone except Sebastian thought her unattractive. He is obviously gorgeous. The book does not convey well enough what makes Prudence special to Sebastian and why others don't see it. It says her aunt convinced her she was unattractive and then it also says that Prudence made herself unattractive by wearing glasses and tightly pulled hair. And whay is that, huh? What is the worst for me: Medeiros seems to be unsure if she is writing a romance, a burlesque, a thriller or a mystery. If the author ridicules her own love story, how can she expect it to be convicing? Furthermore, people pop up in different places and the action jumps from one place to another without any sequence or logic. For example, suddenly we are in a divorce court for the annullment of Prudence's marriage to Sebastian, which her aunt wants. So, to my mind, this book is a hodge-podge of bits and pieces and in the end is ridiculous, unengaging and not worth reading.

This book was boring and I had to skip pages just to finsh it I have read some of her other books and they were much better so if you want to read Teresa Medeiros Then I hope you don't start with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2006-05-30

Over the past 15 years, I've developed a low tolerance for bad romance novels. I toss aside (with disgust) more books than I finish. This book, however, was a keeper. Granted, there were quite a few misunderstandings, and any other author may not have been able to pull off the plot, but Teresa Medeiros managed it beautifully. Prudence and Sebastian were believable and enjoyable characters. I can't wait to read more from this author.

3 out of 5 stars A love-hate relationship.......2004-05-16

I never really liked the hero much -- that's a very bad thing in any romance. Sebastian did have his good moments, but he was too often a jerk and rarely noble or honorable enough. Prudence was more likeable, but she didn't capture my heart as Medeiros' characters usually do. Secondary character Jamie is a hoot, though.

I'm having trouble determining exactly what is lacking in this novel; perhaps it is that Medeiros is one of my favorites and this book isn't up to her usual excellence. Granted, it is an early work, and most writers improve over time, so I perhaps I am being too harsh. If it were another author, I might be more generous, but this is nowhere near Medeiros' best.

Approach it as an early, less-than-stellar Medeiros work, and you'll probably enjoy it. Expect something like her more recent books, and you'll be disappointed.

Stephen King started writing Storm of the Century as a novel, but it evolved into the teleplay of an ABC TV miniseries. Set in Maine's remote Little Tall Island, the tale is all about vivid small-town characters, feuds, infidelities, sordid secrets, kids in peril, and gory portents in scrambled letters. The calamitous snowstorm is nothing compared to the mysterious mind-reading stranger Linoge, who uses magic powers to turn people's guilt against them--when he's not simply braining them with his wolf-head-handled cane. Don't even glance at that cane--it can bring out the devil in you. Just as The Shining was concerned with marriage and alcoholism as much as it was with bad weather and worse spirits, Storm of the Century is more than a horror story. It's creepy because it's realistic.

But it's also unusually visual. Linoge's eyes ominously change color, wind and sea wreak havoc, a basketball leaves blood circles with each bounce. The 100-year storm no doubt hits harder onscreen than on the page, but the snow is a symbol of the more disturbing emotional maelstrom that words evoke perfectly. And the murders of folks we've gotten to know is entirely terrifying in print. The crisp discipline of the screenplay format makes this book better than lots of King's more sprawling novels--the end doesn't wander and the dialogue crackles. Here's the real test: It's impossible to read parts 1 and 2 and not read part 3, "The Reckoning." --Tim Appelo

        Book Description

For the first time in Stephen King's remarkable publishing history, the master storyteller presents an all-new, original tale written expressly for the television screen.

They're calling it the Storm of the Century, and it's coming hard. The residents of Little Tall Island have seen their share of nasty Maine Nor'easters, but this one is different. Not only is it packing hurricane-force winds and up to five feet of snow, it's bringing something worse. Something even the islanders have never seen before. Something no one wants to see.

Just as the first flakes begin to fall, Martha Clarendon, one of Little Tall Island's oldest residents, suffers an unspeakably violent death. While her blood dries, Andre Linoge, the man responsible sits calmly in Martha's easy chair holding his cane topped with a silver wolf's head...waiting.

Linoge knows the townsfolk will come to arrest him. He will let them. For he has come to the island for one reason. And when he meets Constable Mike Anderson, his beautiful wife and child, and the rest of Little Tall's tight-knit community, this stranger will make one simple proposition to them all:

"If you give me what I want, I'll go away."

            Book Description

The words of Sai Baba, "God equals man minus ego," are echoed by Dr. Joshua David Stone in his seminal work, Soul Psychology. A veteran transpersonal psychologist and family counselor, Dr. Stone teaches us how our entire understanding of ourselves and others is completely changed when we integrate our soul into the way we live our lives. Based on eighteen years of Dr. Stone's practice, this book is not a psychological approach to spirituality. It is rather a spiritual approach to the psychology of everyday living.

At the heart of Soul Psychology is emotional healing through the dismantling of the "negative ego," a psychological cancer that prevents us from acting in accordance with our soul's true nature and purpose. This negative energy drives us to find our security outside of ourselves; whereas the only true security is one that is grounded in having a right relationship with self and a right relationship with the Divine. To guide us onto this path of spiritual ascension, Soul Psychology offers a stimulating new viewpoint that expands the boundaries of traditional spiritual practice, providing a wealth of accessible and powerful meditations and exercises, including

            - The six-step process for healing and spiritualizing emotions
            - The spiritual science of the seven rays and the twenty-two chakras
            - Methods for clearing negative psychic energies that inhibit soul growth
            - The one hundred most common pitfalls and traps on the spiritual path

5 out of 5 stars Bound to be a Classic!.......2002-10-12

I never thought I would gain so much insight, understanding and practical guidance from a single book. Dr. Stone has put together a modern compilation of techniques and psychospiritual systems in an easy to understand format. I definitely recommend this book!

            5 out of 5 stars A truly life-enhancing book.......2000-11-13

I hate to dispute the opinion of another, but I wonder if our friend below has actually read any of this book other than the blurb? Judging by his comments, I have to say I very much doubt it. 'Soul Psychology' is an extraordinary book that takes a look at psychology within the context of the mind and soul as opposed to just the mind and personality. The result is an inspiring, life-enhancing book, packed with various tools and techniques that are easy to use and extremely effective in dealing with negative emotions and mindsets and reprogramming the subconscious mind (I can vouch for their effectiveness!). Words cannot describe how empowering and invaluable this book has been. Simply put, it's a classic, visionary and pioneering work - I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Negative ego NOT ego, read the book!.......2000-02-11

Having fully read and explored this book, the reader understands that the author is speaking of the 'negative ego' which needs to be cleared so that perceptual filters are no longer distorting one's perception of reality. The author does not negate the fact that the part of ego necessary for daily activity is important. This is the same part of ego that Sai Baba comments on by saying: 'God equals man minus ego'. Please read this book before you make a review on it!

1 out of 5 stars Conflict Based view of the Ego.......2000-01-04

This presents a rather outmoded view of the ego as the enemy; rather than as a "mechanism"whereby consciousness is able to focus on the external senses and external reality (i.e the world). Accordingly, where consciousness also focuses on the internal senses and reality, and with the awareness of the multidimensional nature of reality and of the self - the ego is perceived as one (quite useful) aspect of consciousness. Damning the ego feeds the illusion of conflict at the very core of one's self. This illusion may feel true due to information primarily perceived and cognized via the external senses - but this is not the "fault" of the ego. For non-conflict based explorations of the psyche read Jane Roberts, J Krishnamurti, Ken Wilber, or search "multidimensionality". Regarding Sai Baba, the reader is referred to the Neural Surfer where Sai Baba, and other spiritual leaders, teachings and lives are explored and scrutinized.

Sew until your heart is content. This is the first book I pick up if I am about to give a room a quick face lift. When I cannot bear to look at that old sofa for one more minute, I can find a way to make a cover for it in just hours. I have used it to cover dining room chairs for unexpected dinner parties and whipped up a bed duvet for the guestroom in just one day. I will not let anyone borrow this book from my library. Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Still Using This Beautiful book a decade later.......2005-09-10

Having seen that Katrin Cargill will be making an appearance nearby my home, I visited Amazon.com to learn of her latest publications. She has done much since I learned of her talents over a decade ago! So why do I write my fellow Amazon'ites a review? Because this is one book that even after a decade's time I return to every time I've a window or even a room to dress. Her studied and effected ideas are tasteful, graceful, and yet sophisticatedly creative. Some earlier reviews online here (e.g., early 1990s) caution new sewers about the limited instructions/projects for beginner-level sewing. While this is true, this book was indispensible to me in the 1990s when I was a beginner at sewing because it's ideas and style can be adapted by anyone. That being said, this lovely photo-book belongs on your shelf whether you are a do-it-yourself, a bed-reader-dreamer, or a designer using someone as for your labor. What's more, this remains the case even after a decade's time of styles changing.

2 out of 5 stars Really nice photos and inspirational, but not easy to follow.......2000-10-25

This book is really a beautiful book. The pictures of fabric being used in various rooms in houses are all very nicely done and the use of fabric is really stunning. Unfortunately, while pictures are nice when it comes to projects with fabric, instructions go a lot further than pictures of the finished product. There are approximately 10-15 projects that actually have instructions in this book. Everything else is just pictures of really nice applications of fabric.

How are the projects with instructions? Of the projects that actually have instructions, the majority of them look really neat. Unfortunately, I think many of them would be difficult to complete because the instructions are fairly weak. Little to no assistance is provided on how to customize the project.

Who is the audience of this book? This book does not seem to be a good fit for beginning sewers or even those with a moderate level of experience. I think expert sewers might be able to use this book more readily because they would be able to transform the pictures into action. To me, this book is actually more of a coffee table book than a real project book and not really practical. Good inspiration value, low ability to apply your inspiration value.

Also, the part that I disliked the most about this book was the section devoted to curtains. Yes, this is a major area that people want to work on for home decoration BUT there are so many books out there dedicated to just curtains (including a really wonderful one by the same author) that the section in this book on curtains seemed really pointless.

If you are a really experienced sewer and need inspiration OR if you are having someone else decorate your house for you and want ideas for an expert to implement, this would be a really good book for you. If you are a beginning sewer, this book will probably overwhelm you by giving you lots of really great ideas that will be too hard for you to implement or figure out how to implement.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny........1999-08-09

Not only is this book beautifully done, but also, the fabric projects are well-presented and easy to undertake. Projects range from storage solutions to elegant interior decorating projects one can do with fabric. I would recommend this book to interior decorators (amateur or professional), seamstresses and upholsterers, and to those with an interest in textiles and their various uses in the home.

4 out of 5 stars Great to spark the imagination!.......1998-08-01

Great ideas to spark the thought processes, I refer to it often to get my mind to think in a different way to solve decorating issues. The projects do run the spectrum in difficulty but I do believe that sewing skills should be intermediate for most.

Case studies are great, but we need hard facts and tips about what goes into good identity and what a designer should look for. I expected to see a few case studies with an analysis detailing why the choices were effective, but it's just a pretty book that gives you nothing but samples of successful identity designs. (I suppose, I wouldn't know...)

Not to mention that the page layout makes it incredibly hard to read! I was very surprised that this came from a graphic designer. The text is written in a tiny font (I don't wear glasses and I had trouble) in the margins of the pages over a background with some thin blue lines. The lines aren't such a big deal, but they do really distract from reading, and it's hard enough to read the book as it is. The design samples weren't easy to see in every case either. They weren't just laid out as is, the author chose to make the layout "design-ey". I know, I know, you can't be great at everything (meaning he's a fine designer, but I don't think textbooks are his thing,) so cut the guy some slack. But don't waste my time and money and describe this book as something it's not.

As a reference book, big thumbs down. As a coffee table book, hmm, I've seen plenty better. If you want this book, borrow it from a friend first.

Wonderful. If you design or like logos, and you would like to learn from analytical case studies, then buy this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but barely a mention of online identity.......1998-09-21

Perhaps my review is a bit jaded because I went into this book looking speficially for online identity issues like "how does a designer begin to keep a user on a website with thousands of other options available?" This is the best, hardest identity issue to hit in a long time. As the book was printed in 1998, I expected SOMETHING about online isues. But there was nothing. I'd also like to speak to whomever designed the layout about the superfluous, messy grids and lines that cover each page. It's very, very stylized and already outdated.

This little book about Justin was really short but it had, at least, a picture on every page and there was little-known stuff about Justin. All of the pix were very cute and some of them I haven't seen anywhere else. I think it was worth the money, especially since you can put it in your pocket!
