Product Description
Isle of Canes is the epic account of a multi-racial family in Louisiana that, over four generations and more than 150 years, rose from the chains of slavery to rule the Isle of Canes. Historically accurate and genealogically significant, this first novel by eminent genealogist Elizabeth Shown Mills is a gripping tale of racial conflict, economic ruin, and family pride told against the backdrop of colonial and antebellum Louisiana. This novel is the result of more than thirty years of research. To fuel the story, as well as to maintain historical accuracy, the author found and referenced actual family history documents such as baptism records, manumission papers, probate records, land records, book extracts, and more to reconstruct the lives and times of Francois, Fanny, Coincoin, Augustin, and countless other unforgettable characters. But it takes more than documents on paper and microfilm to bring such an epic story to life. Mills s engaging prose puts flesh on the bones and pulls you into the lives and lifestyle of long-ago Louisiana.
Customer Reviews:
A compelling and important story.......2004-12-26
A magnificent work. Mills, America's preeminent genealogist, has evolved into a passionate and successful writer of historical fiction. The Isle of Canes deals with the little told story of the Creoles of Louisiana. Mills shares the story of a family, the Metoyers, people of color, as successive generations live and prosper in the unique environment of Spanish and French Louisiana. We see and feel the changes in their lives as the impact of the Civil War comes to the Isle. The story richly weaves the tensions of slavery, multiracial families, and economic upheaval in the antebellum South. This novel is of enduring importance, and will come to be part of the classic literature describing Southern history. If you enjoy a compelling, and entertaining story, based on real families and events, and if you like to be more than entertained i.e. learn something about our history, you will thoroughly enjoy this novel.
Outstanding Reading!.......2004-11-09
I highly recommend this book to those who have any interest in genealogy, history or just enjoy reading the saga of a family. Excellent reading. Very enjoyable. Difficult to put down.
Phenomenal characters!.......2004-08-13
What an incredible story! The four generations in Isle of Canes have touched me in a way I can't forget. Mills has a true gift for creating characters whose skin you can crawl right into and feel their pain and joy.
Held me spellbound.............2004-08-09
Isle of Canes has been called a cross between Gone with the Wind and
Roots. It's a grand epic to rival both, but it goes far beyond GWTW's
moonlight-and-magnolia image of the South and it explores complexities of
slave life that Roots' ignored. The sexual tension of Isle is more akin to
Monticello's Thomas and Sally than to Tara's Scarlett and Rhett, and the
masters who occupy the "big house" were once slaves themselves. Mills
explores raw and painful sides of America's past, but she has done it with
a grace and style and rhythm and emotion that held me spellbound.
Culture, Race, and Sex.......2004-07-29
Behind its idyllic façade, Isle of Canes is a frank and gripping look at issues America has preferred not to deal with-particularly the world of slaveownership by those who once were slaves themselves, its motivation (some would say, necessity), and the conflicts of conscience that lifestyle created. A major underlying theme is the world of sexual servitude, which Isle explores in multiple ways, some of which turn stereotypes on its head. Both issues are presented on a stage history has ignored: the cultural conflict of Creole (French and Spanish Catholic) America versus Anglo-Protestant America in the colonial and antebellum South. Mills brilliantly shows the consequences of the white Creole vs. Anglo conflict upon America's racial history.

Just so-so........2007-09-26
I liked other books in this series much better than this one. It was just ok.
JUST A BIT MORE FORWARD THAN I LIKE.......2006-04-29
The plot was good, the characters were excellent - just a bit too forward for me.
I thought this would be a bit more of what Zack Grange's job would entail. But you had to love the guy.
His little daughter, Dani set an excellent back ground for her daddy.
Zack's friendship with Mick and Josh bound the story together even better.
And Wynn Lane? Well she was intrigueing, fascinating and just too forward for 28 and who hasn't been around much?
Did Conan get a story? What of the other muscle bound guys? Bo, Clint and Marc.
READ? it is a good passage of time.
Great book, loved it!!!!!!.......2004-08-16
Zach & Wynn are great & Danni is adorable. Just loved the the new characters as well as seeing old one's as well, all those muscle bound men & Wynn is no small petite shrinking violet. I wonder if Lori's new book "Just a hint Clint" due out soon is about the Clint in this story, I hope so. There is one very funny part where Mich, Zach & Josh are oggling Wynn through the the kitchen window & Danni shouts to Wynn that they're peeping tomming her. It had me in stitches especially when they dropped down behind the kitchen sink & then had to stand up & face her. This series just gets better with every new book.
Treat Her Right is a Great Little Read!.......2003-02-03
A fun, funny, greatly entertaining short book. I didn't buy the Harlequins because I was a literary snob and didn't want to be seen reading something that looked like a kid's book. However, it's the perfect length for a wait in the Dr's office, sure helping with the stress of sitting around when you have tons of other things you need to be doing. They are not unsophisticated or simplistic ... just a perfect little length. Buying authors on the net has been a great way to broaden my reading. This series was a real winner! It got me hooked on Lori Foster.
What a fun book!.......2002-05-23
This book had me hooked from the minute i read the first page. we met Zack Grange in Caught in the act, which was also a fab. book, but this is his story, he meets Wynn with her outragous personality and is instantly actracted to her, even though she is a less than idealized woman, which i think is awsome, someone who isnt described as being little miss dainty and willowy, but sexy with her less than little figure. the whole book is like a cat and mouse game. The dialoge cracked me up. I love knowing what the characters are thinking and Zack had some pretty funny thoughts. The book was fun, and meets the standards of a good romance, heat mixed with fun, the best combination.

The individual members of the Stormwatch team take their turns in the spotlight in this new, hard-hitting collection. Among the stories are: Jack Hawksmoors encounter with a grisly murder; Battalions fight against a racist militia group; Jenny Sparks battles against evil across the generations through which she has lived. Each is drawn in a style reminiscent of comics from that period.
Customer Reviews:
sf, graphic sf reader, g .......2007-09-25
This trade is something a little different. There are one and done recountings of stories starring individual members of Stormwatch. One does have more than a few though, when some members go out for drinks at a bar that is exclusive to the super powered type of clientele.
A couple of dark issues here with Jack Hawksmoor investigating murder, and Jenny Sparks looking back at an incident with a previous superteam and a psychotic mother.
Stormwatch Goes Solo with Mixed Results.......2007-04-23
The majority of this collection features solo stories for individual Stormwatch characters, and the result is less impressive than you might think. While I thought it would be a sincere treat to spend an entire issue in the heads of characters like Jack Hawksmoore or Jackson King, Ellis doesn't do much with this narrative approach. Each character confronts an obstacle/enemy on his or her own without much emotional "umph," nor particularly energetic storytelling. It was, perhaps, too early in Ellis' tenure to give this treatment to characters that he was only beginning to understand.
I would ignore this volume entirely if it weren't for two relatively noteworthy stories:
The Jenny Sparks solo story features her partial origin, which closely mirrors Western European culture's struggle between idealistic hope and realistic pessimism amidst World Wars, technological breakthroughs, counter-culture movements, and self-realizations. The artwork pays close attention to the time periods, as well, mimicking comic book styles of each decade. The writing still pulls some punches, but this is an ambitious installment.
The second to last story in this collection features the team's first real attempt to bond off-duty. Characterization comes to the forefront for the first time, and does so in a highly endearing way. This installment also foreshadows issues regarding Rose Tattoo and The High, both of which will become pertinent in the "Change or Die" volume.
So I do recommend this volume for the two stories mentioned above, though the rest is quite uninspiring.
A worthy Warren Ellis book.......2006-11-05
This volume covers the history of the characters Jenny Sparks as well as some solo adventures by members of the stormwatch black team. It's a worthy addition to any Warren Ellis collection, but it does not hold up to the quality of the Authority titles. Much of the story in this volume is also covered in "The Secret History of The Authority : Jenny Sparks", albeit differently and with a different tact. Some story reveals in this volume give you insight into the way Sparks behaves as an authority member.
If you read Planetary or the Authority, this book is a must.
Althought I would buy the entire Authority/Planetary collections first.
Solo Stories Shine.......2005-12-19
The first three stories out of the five comics reprinted here (Stormwatch #43-47) spotlight characters in solo stories. Jack Hawksmoor, Jenny Sparks, and Battalion all get chances to step out of the team and just be themselves. Both Hawksmoor and Battalion's stories are entertaining, but Jenny Spark's is bloody brilliant, and worth the price of the graphic novel on its own merits. It recounts her life (briefly) but the real treat is the art style Raney employs. He changes his style to match the comics of the decade being spoken of. The result is a visual feast.
Next, we have a combination story. Part of it is a solo Rose Tattoo, but contrasted with this is a team party subplot. Again, entertaining if not spectacular.
Lastly is a story by Ellis penciled by Jim Lee himself. It's always nice to see Wildstorm's founder taking a stab at penciling one of his books, and this is no exception. It's very pleasant to look at, though not Ellis' finest moment.
This book is overall, pretty good, and I would recommend it to fans of the Authority, Stormwatch, or Warren Ellis. As a side note, if you're interested in Jenny, please check out a more complete telling of her back story in Jenny Sparks: The Secret History of the Authority ISBN: 1563897695.
words vs. pictures.......2001-07-29
The title of the second volume of collected StormWatch issues, StormWatch: Lightning Strikes, is a reference to the electrical powers of Jenny Sparks, one of the members that Warren Ellis created upon his assumption of the writing chores on this book. It's a good reference to make, because although this collection spotlights several StormWatch members in turn, the issue devoted to her back story is your reason to buy this volume.
These StormWatch collections chronicle Ellis's dismantling of a superhero team that, prior to his arrival, could arguably be viewed as an example of how bad things got in mainstream comics in the Nineties. While the first volume was sort of Ellis's short sharp shock to the StormWatch status quo, this volume is his meditation on how screwed up both the world and its heroes really are.
One story details Jack Hawksmoor's hunt for a federally protected madman is disturbing and absurdist to the nth degree. Another tells how Battalion's single-handed defeat of an anti-government militia group in Jacksonville, Alabama still can't earn respect or safety for the black man in a racist society. In a different story, the very logic of the dangerous presence of superhumans amongst 'normals' is challenged while the members of StormWatch Black, Red and Prime discover on an awkward night of bar-hopping that they can barely stand to be around each other outside of a crisis.
But while these stories are interesting, the real meat is in Jenny's recounting of her previously unknown history. Turns out she's as old as the twentieth century (these stories originally appeared in 1996-97) and her 'adventures' as a superhero through the years drove her to alcoholism and retirement by the Eighties. If that sounds a bit histrionic, just wait until you find out what she witnessed along the way -- it's surprising that she stuck around at all.
All of this is calculated to lay the final groundwork in the reader's mind for the need to further alter the group's dynamic, while strengthening StormWatch's global jurisdiction. As Weatherman, the group's Machiavellian altruist says, "Our world holds too many secrets, and too many of those secrets are lethal to us". As upcoming volumes are sure to tell, uncovering the world's secrets makes you very unpopular with the wrong people.
I've been avoiding discussing the artwork in this volume because frankly, it's god-awful. Rather than rising to the challenge of Ellis's mature scripts, Tom Raney's work is visibly worse than before. A fill-in/return by series creator Jim Lee for the last installment of this volume is all full-page illustrations with Weatherman's after-the-fact report to the U.N. Special Security Council as the only narrative. The report's dry sarcasm and contempt for its audience reads like a reflection of Ellis's own contempt of the superheroic shtick he's deconstructing. I wonder if his boss knew he was being made fun of at the time? Or ever?
In short, don't buy this collection for the art, and don't read it if you like your superheroes simple and pure. Buy it if you want to witness Warren Ellis dance on the graves of your adolescent fantasies. Sound disturbing? Ask Jenny Sparks about 'disturbing'.

Good checklists, some outdated info & too many scare tactics.......1999-09-18
I was pleased with about the first five chapters of this book containing lists on how to put together a 72 hour kit, and how to stock a pantry, a system that prepares you for more than just Y2K, (eg. being out of work for a period of time). When it came to looking up some of the resources listed however, particularly readiness books available, I was disappointed. Of 32 books that I was interested in buying, 16 were out of print, three were not available anywhere that I could find, and others had outdated and obsolete information. I feel "Pantry" also employs far too many scare tactics, and was disconcerted to see canning and gardening books listed alongside books demonstrating the how-to's of using the black market, looting, ambushing, poaching, and searching through dumpsters for food! I think by far the problem facing us in 2000 is no longer the millenium bug so much as the increasing panic generated from reading books such as "pantry" that employ scare tactic methods (undoubtably for the purpose of persuading you to buy the products advertised throughout the book). I bought "Pantry" in search of pantry and canning resources and information. My advice: If you want information and have access to the internet, do a search for Y2K, Pantry, Canning, etc and find plenty of resources and info, some of which, if you are still inclined to prepare, carry supplies and pantry kits at far lower prices than those advertised in this book.
Best Resource Guide EVER!.......1999-04-03
James Stevens has done a fantastic job of providing information on how to FIND preparedness products and companies. Some people can buy storage food and equipment at stores appearing on every street corner, but most of us have to scratch our heads and fret and stew, wondering where to even BEGIN looking for the things we need to learn to be more self-sufficient. Thanks, James, for a wonderful resource book that makes it EASY to get prepared. Rita Bingham
Another Y2K fear mongerer. I'm sending it back........1999-03-11
Family preparedness has always been important, no more so today. However with the purported "Y2K" scare, "survivalists", and other fear mongers have a new tool to push their agenda. Having read "Making the Best of Basics" I was surprised and saddened that this book uses the same scare tactics so prevalent on the internet and employed by those who stand to profit from "Y2K". I was disgusted by the chapter on buying precious metals. I cannot think of a less wise investment for those who truly wish to be prepared
This book covers everything!.......1999-01-27
Bravo Mr. Stevens! This book has helped my wife and I decide not only what to put in our food storage, but how much of it to store. We found a local retailer in the comprehensive directory that was just a few blocks from our house, the shop owner himself was suprised that he was in it. This book outlines ways to be prepared for any emergency including the Y2K bug. Whether something drastic happens at the turn of the century or not, there are other things to be prepared for such as unemployment or financial hardships. Our family has gathered important documents such as life insurance, brokerage accounts and retirement info in the event that one of us dies. We feel more prepared to face the world, be it personal tragedy or widespread disaster because of the valuable info in this book.
Your decoder ring to the Preparedness Industry.......1998-11-25
This is the most comprehensive book of Preparedness Industry resources available. Each week this book becomes more valuable. This industry is growing rapidly and many major suppliers are experiencing unprecedented backorders. Before you place your first order for a preparedness product, read this book!! You have options and this book will help you make educated buying decisions.

Collecting Printed Ephemera
ASIN: 0415926483 |
Book Description
The joy of finding an old box in the attic filled with postcards, invitations, theater programs, laundry lists, and pay stubs is discovering the stories hidden within them. The paper trails of our lives -- or ephemera -- may hold sentimental value, reminding us of great grandparents. They chronicle social history. They can be valuable as collectibles or antiques. But the greatest pleasure is that these ordinary documents can reconstruct with uncanny immediacy the drama of day-to-day life.
The Encyclopedia of Ephemera is the first work of its kind, providing an unparalleled sourcebook with over 400 entries that cover all aspects of everyday documents and artifacts, from bookmarks to birth certificates to lighthouse dues papers. Continuing a tradition that started in the Victorian era, when disposable paper items such as trade cards, die-cuts and greeting cards were accumulated to paste into scrap books, expert Maurice Rickards has compiled an enormous range of paper collectibles from the obscureto the commonplace. His artifacts come from around the world and include such throw-away items as cigarette packs and crate labels as well as the ubiquitous faxes, parking tickets, and phone cards of daily life.
As this major new reference shows, simple slips of paper can speak volumes about status, taste, customs, and taboos, revealing the very roots of popular culture.

What a thrill this book should be for those who have yet to fall in love with sculptor Alexander Calder, who died in 1976. And it will deepen the affection the rest of us already hold for him and his fabulous creations. The author, photographer Pedro Guerrero, first took his camera to Calder's Connecticut studio in 1963, on a routine assignment with an editor from House and Garden magazine. As soon as they arrived at Calder's shambly, magical, jam-packed home, Guerrero could sense that the editor was less than enthralled. "If I had known you were going to photograph that room," she later sniffed, "I would have straightened the slipcovers."
"What a thing to notice!" writes Guerrero, who was, as he put it, "plotting my next move." Over the next 13 years, he photographed Calder, often with his beautiful wife, Louisa, in different houses and studios, all of them mesmerizingly overflowing with wire sculptures, homemade toys for their grandchildren, stabiles, mobiles, piles of mail, chairlike contraptions, and sculptural kitchen paraphernalia. "Be careful where you step," Calder warned Guerrero in the studio, "everything here is important."
Calder at Home is as playful and entertaining as the artist's famous Circus acrobats and animals installed (alas, behind glass) in the lobby of the Whitney Museum of American Art. From the foreword by Calder's grandson to Guerrero's final, pensive photograph of the master alchemist, this is a book to dream on. --Peggy Moorman
Customer Reviews:
A CALDER LOVER'S JOY!.......2001-06-01
In combination, the photography and text tell an intimate story about Calder, his wife, their life together and what mattered most to them, which you readers find anywhere else. One comes away with the sense that both of them would have enjoyed and appreciated this book as much as I do. I think this is one of the best "art books" published in years.
A very good introduction to Calder's art.......1998-05-27
I bought this book after my visit to the Calder exhibition in the National Gallery of Art in Washington in May '98. It is really a very nice book. You will discover in the book that some of the masterpieces (Spring or Romulus and Remus) seen in the exhibition were found left in Calder's studio and rearranged by the artist. You will love and enjoy this book !

Book Description
One of the movies' greatest actors and most colorful characters, a real-life tough guy with the prison record to prove it, Robert Mitchum was a movie icon for an almost unprecedented half-century, the cool, sleepy-eyed star of such classics as The Night of the Hunter; Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison; Cape Fear; The Longest Day; Farewell, My Lovely; and The Winds of War. Mitchum's powerful presence and simmering violence combined with hard-boiled humor and existential detachment to create a new style in movie acting: the screen's first hipster antihero-before Brando, James Dean, Elvis, or Eastwood-the inventor of big-screen cool.Robert Mitchum: "Baby, I Don't Care" is the first complete biography of Mitchum, and a book as big, colorful, and controversial as the star himself. Exhaustively researched, it makes use of thousands of rare documents from around the world and nearly two hundred in-depth interviews with Mitchum's family, friends, and associates (many going on record for the first time ever) ranging over his seventy-nine years of hard living. Written with great style, and vividly detailed, this is an intimate, comprehensive portrait of an amazing life, comic, tragic, daring, and outrageous.
Customer Reviews:
Out of the Past: Build My Gallows High, Baby.......2007-10-09
Lee Server has done a commendable job capturing the essence of an enigmatic and iconic Hollywood star. His task was not an easy one: Mitchum's wife and immediate family did not cooperate with Server and made themselves inaccessible. Nonetheless, Server soldiered on and managed to write a creditable biography of a mercurial and oftentimes inexplicable performer.
Mitchum was a living contradiction in terms. Having lived a vagabond life as a hobo during the Great Depression, which included a conviction for vagrancy and a stretch on a Southern chain gang, Mitchum rode the rails to Los Angeles. After marrying his high school sweetheart, Dorothy, who defined the role of a long suffering and supportive spouse, and working in a defense plant, Mitchum broke into acting as a bit player in inexpensive Westerns. Gradually his roles were expanded until he scored successes in films such as "The Story of G. I. Joe" and the low budget film noir thriller "When Strangers Marry." A long term contract with RKO Studios helped establish Mitchum as one of the leading actors in the film noir genre in pictures such as "Crossfire," "The Racket," "The Big Steal" and the definitive noir "Out of the Past."
In the latter film, Mitchum narrated the picture and delivered some excellent lines such as the following response to a statement concerning the femme fatale, Kathy Moffat (Jane Greer): "She can't be all bad. No one is." To which Mitchum replied: "Well, she comes the closest." In several exchanges with Moffat, Jeff Bailey (Mitchum) scores again: "You can never help anything, can you? You're like a leaf that the wind blows from one gutter to another" or "Just get out, will you? I have to sleep in this room."
Late in his career, Mitchum was given the opportunity to revisit noirland in a visually stunning adaptation of Raymond Chandler's "Farewell, My Lovely." Mitchum treated the acting profession with contempt and disdain, preferring to spend his idle hours reading, womanizing, drinking and smoking. From his youth, Mitchum had smoked marijuana and eventually he ended up serving a prison term for doing so while in Hollywood. Mitchum survived this scandal and continued to prosper.
Server's book recounts some wonderful anecdotes about Mitchum's encounters with the reclusive studio chief Howard Hughes, the penniless bon vivant Orson Welles, John Wayne and many others. The film contains an extensive filmography and summarizes all of Mitchum's important film roles. This book is an excellent read that will be enjoyed by any serious film enthusiast and noir aficionado.
Baby I Don't Care, But You Will About This Bio.......2007-08-25
If Robert Mitchum was a favorite actor, if you're interested in Hollywood history, or larger, funnier than life true stories, or if you just like well written and superbly researched biographies, then this book is for you.
My only criticism is Lee Server leaves you wanting for more, for revealing the tantalizing crazy tales shared to him in interviews, but for concerns of privacy and libel suits, he could not disclose.
I look forward to reading his new book on Ava Gardner, even though I don't care much for Hollywood.
You'll Learn Alot About This Interesting Person.......2007-08-10
Robert Mitchum was NOT one of my favorite actors before reading this book. I didn't appreciate his films very much nor his acting ability. But, after reading the book, I learned that I was wrong. He was a great actor and he was in SOME wonderful films! Plus, the guy was a "maverick" which makes him even more interesting as a personality. This book is worth your time. You'll go back and rent some of the movies in which Mr. Mitchum appeared and enjoy them more than you would have before reading this book. Recommended.
What a Man!.......2007-05-22
They don't make them like him anymore. This was a very well researched book and I enjoyed it very much. One of the things that I thought about while reading it was that Mr. Mitchum remained at RKO in spite of inferior movies and roles because he remained loyal to Howard Hughes who stuck by him after his arrest for using marijuana. What might he have done if he had been at a different studio? Then again if he was with another studio his career might have been over then and there.
One other thing. His wife stayed with him through countless affairs and public humilations. Ava Gardner even called her and asked her to let him go! That was some kind of love. Mr. Mitchum should have been more impressed with her.
baby, I don't care..........2007-04-03
they don't make them like this anymore..a man unto himself..answering to no one but himself..entering LA on a train as a hobo..smoking the wild weed along the route..and leaving Hollywood as an icon of the American screen...Lee Server writes a memorable book..no sugar coating here..a man who could see through the bs of the business and who was never enamored with being a star only with doing the work with integrity..he'll never be canonized but to truly appreciate him, read this wonderful book and then watch one of his films..God, we need more like him today...
Book Description
"Mitchum's tales include beatings, hanging producers by their shoelaces, killings in Mexican bars and slapping Teutonic helmer Otto Preminger. And there are classic observations, such as his quip to Variety that 'the best producer is an absent one.' Mitchum editor Jerry Roberts...conducted one of the interviews, and has done a terrific job piecing together vintage conversations with David Frost, Dick Lochte, Richard Schickel and Charles Champlin, as well as collecting a wonderful array of prize quotes by and about Mitchum." -Steven Gaydos, Variety
Customer Reviews:
Nice job of xeroxing some old articles.......2001-07-17
This book about a major movie star was put together with a minimum of effort. If it took more than two days to xerox or get a transcript of these old interviews I would be surprised. The book is short and padded at the end with random quotes by or about Mitchum. You can digest this book in about thirty minutes. Mitchum is amusing as an interview subject but the interviews are mostly question and answer and have no context and the questioners often don't know much about Mitchum's career or at least don't know when he's got his facts right or wrong. Most of the interviews were done during publicity jaunts so you get a superficial, one-sided view of the actor's experiences. If that's all you want to know about Mitchum and his movies okay but otherwise this is a waste of money.
PJ Peake's Personal opinion.......2001-07-14
Having read another book written by Mitch's brother John(which I might add was VERY good) this is next to that. This was previously taped interviews and various stories told by Mitch himself. His wife, son Chris and Rodger Ebert also were involved. It is a real must for any Mitchum fan!! For those who are not familiar with his style, it will be up to them to figure out what many of the hosts had to discover about the star much to their delight. This book has many parts, such as quotes, documentaries etc. Truly a delight to read with many surprises. PJ Peake

A very interesting and at times humorous book.......1999-02-12
This is one of the most interesting books that I have read in a long while. While OOP I was still able to obtain it here. It was hard to put it down once you started reading it, and at times made you laugh out loud. An honest and sincere story about two brothers growing up during hard times, their childhood pranks to their achievements as adults. Well worth the search to find it!
This is a great book! Funny, sincere, and good reading!.......1999-02-11
This is the best book that I've read in a long time!! It has humor, makes you laugh out loud, and basically a great book to read!! It is based on the true stories about two brothers growing up. It is honest, sincere, and truthful with no fluff added. It is hard to put it down once you have started reading it. The pictures are an added joy. I would rate it higher than 5 stars. Too bad it's out of print, though I got it here.

Book Description
Robert Mitchum's "bad boy" reputation that colors his public profile has been both earned and undeserved. Jerry Roberts discusses the actor's career, his cult status, his under-appreciated talent, his forgotten films, and his nonchalance. This book catalogues previously published information on Mitchum, taking a full measure of the actor and describing the events that occasionally brought him more notoriety than his movies. The book's biographical essay and annotated filmography scrutinize his performing style. Many yarns about Mitchum have been repeated and modified into legend. But much of "the Mitchum myth" has been just that: myth. The final word here on various rumors and stories comes from the confirmations, clarifications and corrections made by Robert Mitchum during an interview with the author and in correspondence with several members of the Mitchum family. As with the other Bio-Bibliographies in the Performing Arts, this biographical essay is followed by a chronology, annotated filmography, television, stage, recording and writing credits, list of awards, annotated bibliography listing 1,300 entries and a comprehensive index.

Book Description
Follows one of cinema's great actors from his early days in Westerns to the end of his life. Along the way, this illustrated biography reflects on how his real life echoed the nefarious characters he played. Readers will especially enjoy the "chronoMitchology" timeline, and a "Mitchabet," the A-to-Z of the actor.
