Book Description
It's summer in Atlanta and black children are disappearing. By the time the heinous killing spree is over, 29 will be dead. This haunting menace provides the backdrop to the exquisitely evocative stories of three children fighting the everyday battles of adolescence: Tasha, who is coping with her parents' separation and the sweet pain of a first crush on a tender boy; Rodney, who struggles to make friends and wants only to please his abusive father; and Octavia, who faces down the popular crowd at school and must straddle the line between protected and protective daughter. Ultimately, these individual stories reveal the loss of innocence that accompanies the passage from childhood to adulthood.

A Beautiful, Character-Driven Novel.......2007-02-20
I grew especially attached to the character Octavia while reading this lovely book, even before the final section, which focuses on her particular childhood trials and reveals the reason for the title. For me, Leaving Atalant was one of those reads that built up steam and interest, and edged its way into my heart until I was fully invested in what would happen to these kids. I was very sorry to reach the last page, but fortunately I can move on to The Untelling next. :-)
Intriguing.......2007-01-20
I knew when I ordered this from my book rental club that the story revolved around the Atlanta Child Murders. Having been a preteen when all that was going on, I was hesitant to revisit the subject.
However, I was pleasantly surprised. The story was nothing what I thought. Rather than focusing on the horrors of the Child Murders, Ms. Jones brings out some necessary social issues that need to be addressed in today's society--all of these from the perspective of children.
If you are parent, get this book. I am not a parent, but should I become a parent one day, I will know to take heed and treat my child as the gift that he/she will be.
Also, hats off to Griot Audio for a stellar performance on the audio CD.
Interesting and Pleasant.......2006-07-01
Nice book, can be boring at times. May be more enjoyable as a movie.
Way Before My Time [5 stars].......2006-06-09
I usually don't read books that much, but I had to read "Leaving Atlanta" for an assignment for school. It's a real nice book, written by Tayari Jones, who I had the pleasure of meeting last year when she came to my college. The story is set on the west side of Atlanta, Georgia in the year 1979 and is split into 3 parts, first being told in third person, the main character being Tasha. Then in second person, being Rodney. And last, being told in first person with the main character being Octavia. My favorite is when it is told through Octavia, because it goes into more detail on how one of the characters felt in the story. The entire book revolves around the "Atlanta Child Murders" that occured between 1979 and 1982, a huge contrevesy that is questioned even to this day about it's suspect. The book isn't that long, it took me about 4 days to read it, and its one of those book you don't want to put down, because as a reader, you are anxious to see what is going to happen next. This is one of those books that is going to make you think you were there, when all of this was going on.
Recommended for anybody who wants to get to know something about the Atlanta Child Murders, and anyone who wants to enjoy a good book.
WOW, I THOUGHT I WAS THERE..........2006-01-03
I TRULY DID. AT THE TIME OF THESE EVENTS I WAS A BABY/TODDLER SO THIS GAVE ME VERY GREAT DESCRIPTION OF WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO BE A CHILD IN ATLANTA DURING THOSE TIMES. THIS BOOK LEFT ME TO ASK "WILL THERE BE CONTINUATION OF THIS TO FIND HOW THIS IMPACTED SOME OF THE CHARACTER'S LIVES IN THE FUTURE". IT WAS SO REAL I REALLY WANTED TO KNOW. KUDOS ON A JOB WELL DONE!!!

Book Description
Arriving on a lush Pacific island, Eulalie Grace LaRue was soon to be reunited with the father she hadn't seen since childhood. Yet before Lollie's dreamed-of meeting could take place, the lovely Southern belle was caught in the crossfire of a violent revolution -- and thrown into the rugged arms of Sam Forester.
On the run in the jungle, the battle-scarred soldier of fortune didn't know what to do with the pampered blonde placed in his care. Survival was his top priority, but he could not resist Lollie's seductive charm...or deny the growing attraction between them. Though Sam thrived on chance and risk, falling in love was the one chance he wasn't willing to take.
Powerless against the desire that consumed them both, Lollie surrendered to his passionate embrace. But when he dismissed her affections, she was determined to fight for him...to prove that in the steamy heat of paradise, two hearts would find the love of a lifetime....

Funniest romance ever!.......2006-05-06
I am in a readers group and was lucky enough to meet Jill Barnett when she lived near the Bookstore that we meet at when this came out. This is her funniest book, (steamy too!) although I love all her stories. She is funnier and sweeter in person. I love Sam and Lollie and the epilogue is the best part. I wish Jill would write a sequel for Sam's friend. It is a very fast read and lots of laughter. Very original setting and somewhat violent but not over the top. I loved the cover of the original edition. Thanks Jill for all the laughs!
This book will make you laugh tell you cry..........2004-05-22
This is the most funny crazy matched couple in the book I have ever read.I laugh tell I cryed and read this in 2 days.It was so hard to put down.I never read anything by this author but if any of her other books are as good as this one I am in.This was one crazy read.Have fun and enjoy I did.
Jungle romance.......2004-04-25
Set in 1896 in the jungles of the Philippines, Lollie La Rue has arrived in Manila to meet her father who has been absent most of her life. She gets kidnapped by a group of guerillas who think that she is associated to Sam Forester, a mercenary who fights for a different faction of guerillas. They travel together through the jungles of the Philippines to flee their captors and to avoid the shots of Spanish soldiers. Sam is a hardened mercenary from the wrong side of town whilst Lollie is a pampered socialite. She finds it difficult to rough it out in the jungle but finds herself attracted to the rugged and handsome Sam. Sam finds Lollie an annoyance and it's no wonder. She screams and shouts loud enough to make anyone run a mile and is so maladroite.
I love the humour in Jill Barnett's books and this book is no exception but I didn't really feel that there was much chemistry between the two main leads. Lollie is just too annoying to be endearing. However, the book is fast paced with lots of adventure and humour so I still give it 4 stars.
Lealing
Great Book!.......2002-12-22
I loved this book! I can understand why some people didn't like the book and after reading the reviews I was thinking about not reading the book, but I glad I didn't listen. I enjoyed the character Lollie. She wasn't perfect, but she had a lot of heart and was just what Sam needed. Yes, he did say some things that I didn't like, but I feel that it just added to who he was and his individuality. Both characters saved each other and helped each other grow. I laughed while reading this book because of all the things Lollie got into. I love the characters that Jill Barnett makes up. She is one of my favorite authors and I have yet to read a book by her that I didn't like. I read all of her books, but two and can't wait for her to write more. Jill Barnett has the writer's gift!
A brute and a ditz - they deserve each other.......2002-02-26
I didn't think this book was very funny at all and I like the author's work. I would have given this book less of a rating except for the fact that I did finish it. Lollie is so inept it was painful and Sam is so mean and verbally abusive to her, calling her stupid all the time, even when he is supposed to be falling in love with her. Except for the fact that he is always there to save her from her ineptitude, this man is a brute and has very little redeeming features. Poor Lollie never seems to improve and her accidents are not very funny. Why these two people wind up together is a mystery. Don't like dumb women, don't like mean-spirited men.

Not the greatest.......2006-06-21
I'm guesing the other two reviewers are die hard judge dredd fans which is fine of course, to each his own - for someone like me who is brand new to dredd however I wouldn't recommend this book.... while it seems like there's a lot of potential for good stories here, each story in this book is way, way too short - the action's practically over before it starts, very little in the way of in depth character development... I guess I compare any graphic novel I read to the all time greats in that genre (Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke, Sandman, Preacher, Kingdom Come, et cetera ) - in comparison this particular book falls waaaayyyyy short.
A Perfect Sampler of Judge Dredd's World; Bolland is GOD.......2005-04-12
I'm a little confused as to why DC hasn't simply done a series of comprehensive reprints of Judge Dredd, as they have with the other 2000 AD properties. Oh well, you take what you can get.
I'm not an expert on Dredd, but I do have a little experience with the character (outside the terrible Stallone movie), and this volume is a perfect intro to Dredd and his world. The violence, the snarky humor, the break-neck plots, it's all here, as Dredd battles the vile Judge Death, who has decided all living things break the law, and so must be punished by Death. Dredd also gets to police "The First Lunar Olympics", a particularly amusing bit of satire, as atheletes are scanned for drugs AND bionic enhancements beyond the permitted 20%. The image of a boarder falling off the ramp and onto the pavement at 200+ mph is amusing in its gore. Another brilliant satire is "The Oxygen Board", as a group of crooks look like they've gotten away with the perfect robbery on the moon, until one is informed his oxygen bill is late. It's refreshing to read stories that pack a wallop in about 10 pages or so, particularly in this day of "decompressed" plots running multiple issues so common in comics.
While John Wagner and Alan Grant's stories are a hoot, the real attraction of this particular collection is the artwork of Brian Bolland (maybe it should have been called "Judge Dredd: The Bolland Collection"). His pencils are some of the most detailed and realistic around. Every grostesque fight, bizarre alien, and elaborate spaceship is a joy to behold. Because Bolland has become almost exclusively a cover artist, this collection is that much more of a gem.
While I understand the more patchwork approach to Dredd DC has taken (there's a lot of material, some of it more in demand than others), I hope DC does get around to being more comprehensive. But if not, great collections like this will do nicely.
AKA: The Best of Dredd!.......2005-04-09
I'm very thankful for DC/2000AD's reprint series, as it's about time these 2000AD classics were made newly available here in the States. JUDGE DREDD: DREDD VS. DEATH collects material written by Alan Grant & John Wagner, and illustrated by the incomparable Brian Bolland. About half of this collection consists of stories featuring Judge Death, perhaps the greatest Dredd villain of all time. He's an other-dimensional Judge who has determind that life is a crime - so everyone must die! The stories begin with his arrival in Mega-City 1 and proceed to his resurrection by the remaining 3 Dark Judges. The remainder of the book consists of one-shot stories that are much more light-hearted in tone; some, in fact, are quite funny. Grant and Wagner get a thumbs-up for the writing. As for Bolland, these issues of 2000AD established his reputation as one of the greatest illustrators in comics. For someone who works in fine-line, his style is very photo-realistic, giving Dredd's universe more depth and shadow. In fact, I first read these stories when I was 12 or so, and some of the images from the Judge Death tales still creep me out to this day. These Dredd stories are the best ever, so even if you're not a fan, I say to check them out.

Super Reader.......2007-08-04
Supposedly this is based on a game story, so either that is really good, or Rennie, being a Dredd expert, has just done a fine job.
Dredd, Anderson and Giant are all here.
So is EverPet, a pet revivification company. This is very nasty. Not quite as nasty as the Dark Judges, though.
Death has found a weakness in one of the Psi-Judges on guard rotation, and is exploiting it.
This leads to a rise in the Church of Death, and an outbreak of vampirism via retrovirus. As such, Chief Judge Hershey is inclined to believe Anderson's precog warning.
Now, the senior Judges have to try and stop this before the bodycount gets to sixty million like in a previous encounter.
Clooney Memorial is struggling enough as it is.
A very well done Dredd book.
THE DARK JUDGES RETURN!.......2006-01-13
Back in the mid-1980's when I was a regular reader of the Fleetway/Quality Judge Dredd comics, my favorite stories were always those that involved Dredd and Psi-Judge Anderson's arch-nemesis the ghoulish Judge Death. Death and his four Dark Judged brethren Fear, Fire, and Mortis take the center stage in this Judge Dredd adventure which is based on the video game of the same name and available for multiple video gaming platforms. I admit that I never played the game but I don't think it makes a difference.
A one chapter prolog introduces readers to a literal hell on earth as the Dark Judges have brought their version of Necropolis to Megacity One, killing millions. The Dark Judges conclude that life itself is the crime so the sentence is death. Cut ahead ten years later and although it's not really explained, the Dark Judges were eventually defeated, due in part to the usual heroics of Dredd and Anderson and the four malevolent entities are now imprisoned within the Tomb, the ultra maximum security prison with the most high tech security systems as well as psi-judges on duty to constantly monitor for any psychic activity coming from the cells of the dark judges.
Trouble is looming in the city, however. A new gang is making their name known, the Death Cult, dedicated to Judge Death. At first they are merely dismissed as the new flavor of the month gang, but their activities grow more and more troubling as they recruit and seemingly brainwash young people into the cult. Then, Dredd and another judge have a near fatal encounter with what seems to be vampires who were trying to rob a blood supply warehouse. An examination by tek-judges confirms that the creatures are bio-engineered vampires. Super strength, resistance to injury and infected with a retrovirus that causes them to hunger for blood.
Meanwhile Judge Death is slowly and meticulously using his influence ever so subtly on a weak psi-judge until he can completely control him to free the Dark Judges. As this is going on, Anderson is returning to the Grand Hall of Justice to warn them but comes under attack by a group of the vampires, nearly killing her. Dredd and Anderson again find themselves having to thwart the dark judges.
Rennie's story is a bit slow in getting started. The action doesn't start in earnest until well over a third of the way through the 256 page book and Dredd himself is barely seen through the first 80 pages or so. But once it does take off it's a fun ride. The prologue is amongst the most stark and terrifying that I've ever read in a sci-fi story. The Dark Judges are the epitome of evil, hating all life and making for the ultimate in foes for Dredd and Anderson. The vampires add an additional element of danger and horror.

Brilliant telling of the game story!.......2003-10-06
A wonderful action-packed reworking of the story from the game Judge Dredd:Dredd vs. Death. Mr Rennie captures the crazy atmosphere of Mega City One and Judge Dredd with skill and enthusiasm. A rollercoaster of an action book with enough crazy moments to make it stand out from the crowd. A great tie-in to a great game.

A Journaling Aid.......2005-09-18
"A Spiritual Formation Journal" is just that--a journal in book form. It is divided in sections according to the author's (and Renovare's) categories of classic spiritual formation. Each section includes a quote from that category, and then copious room for journaling.
To the extent that the book encourages journaling and to the extent that it summarizes historical threads in spiritual formation, this is a very helpful book. However, for those used to journaling already, a yellow legal pad or a computer keyboard may be just as helpful. In other words, this is a fine place for a new "journalist" to begin, but not necessarily necessary for the student advanced in the art of journaling.
Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and the forthcoming, "Beyond the Suffering: The Story of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."
be prepared.......2000-10-27
This is a journal. It is full of pages for you to write. If you are not used to journaling, this will be new for you. This book will assist you in your spiritual growth by letting you reflect. Made to be work with the Spiritual Formation Workbook, this book is helpful in reflecting the activities in that book. Get ready to write and reflect. I have not used mine personally. I do journal , but not in the format this requires.

What's to eat?.......2007-05-01
What's to eat? I wish I could have found it in this book! I had to put this book aside, and cool-off, before writing a review. I was disappointed, but I'll keep it for my Oz collection, if nothing else.
It's 2007, and we don't eat like we used to eat in 1937. I mean, who smothers a sandwich with gravy these days? And it's a big, cheesy, greasy, meaty, sandwich that you bake into a LOAF to begin with! Who makes those crazy-looking jello desserts, that no one eats? When was the last time you decided to break-out and make a batch of JELLY? You will have to dig-through these recipes, and alter them in order to make a quick, healthy meal. (No wonder Judy Garland struggled with her weight!!) Many of the recipes for sauces and snacks can be found at the local deli or grocery store already, now. I recommend, if you collect Oz, that you purchase this book used and at the cheapest cost you can find. (The photos are okay!)
I was appalled and thought this book is poorly edited. Anyone and everyone who had anything to do with the word "Oz" managed to contribute a recipe. That means: you also have recipes from the cast of the Wiz, and actors, etc. from every Oz cartoon or movie done in the '80's. Is it because some of these people might be semi-famous? By virtue of being married to one of the authors, you even get recipes from Steve Cox's wife. (IE, recipes from stage managers who've done an Oz play in 1999?) I think the authors should have stayed with the original cast (but, the newer contributions might actually be edible). Regardless, it is off-putting. Now I think I was looking at the book more for nostalgic reasons than anything? (I certainly won't be "cooking" with it!) The presentation is very nice. But I found myself feeling more frustrated by the content, than interested. In fact, every time I pick up this book, I feel prompted to want to write my own Oz recipe book. I could send them to this publisher! (Obviously, they will publish anything.)
Fun book - Great recipes!.......2006-08-27
This book is great fun! Movie-themed cookbooks often fail, as usually the recipes are simply a collection of cleverly named dishes with no other relation to the film. This book, however, succeeds wonderfully as the recipes are all from people associated with The Wizard of Oz in one way or another. Filled with rare photographs of all phases of Oz-mania (from the books, to the films, to the various theatre productions), the recipes are surprisingly good. My favorite is Barry Van Dyke's (co-host of the CBS Oz broadcast in '61-62) Shrimp Salad - perfect on a hot summer day, this dish gets rave reviews every time I serve it! A must-have for all Oz fans, Judy Garland fans, or anyone who loves to cook!
We're off to see the Wizard, the one that cooks that is!.......2006-05-28
Who doesn't love the Wizard of Oz... and who wouldn't adore a cookbook in its honor!! This is such a treat. Lots of simple, fun and crazy tasty recipes will be found in this gem of a cookbook. PERFECT for when your child is into Oz and wants an Oz-themed birthday party! There's even a Toto inspired treat for your doggie too!
Lots of behind the scene info, pictures, history of the cast and favorite cast recipes. Enjoy!
This book cooks!.......2005-07-20
I loved this book so much that I almost want to learn how to cook (well, not really!)!! Once again, Stephen Cox mixes humor and trivia with painstaking research, rare photographs and fascinating tid-bits. I've always said that this author's books are like comfort food for the mind. Now he feeds your body too!
Unique Collectors Item.......2003-08-02
The entire book is great fun. The recipes are genuinely tasty and even have hilarious names! Plus, the book is chock full of photographs and trivia. Even if you don't cook, any fan of Oz will find plenty to love. And if you're a kitchen wizard who isn't into Oz so much, you'll pick up lots of delicious new ideas. Makes a great gift. A treasure written by two wonderful people!

Book Description
The Silk Route was an ancient caravan route that began at the Golden Horn in present-day Istanbul and extended through the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asia to China and its seaports. It was through this caravan route, perhaps as long ago as the fourth century a.d. that goods of European manufacturers were introduced to remote villages and settlements. Here they were traded for indigenous exotic items such as silk, spices, and the subject of this luxurious and authoritative volume-oriental rugs.
Oriental Rugs of the Silk Route, by John B. Gregorian, president of one of the oldest and largest oriental rug institutions in North America, provides an illustrated tour of the modern-day oriental rug-making centers of the Silk Route. A compelling text and stunning color photography complemented by vintage black-and-white images transport you to Middle Eastern villages and cities, revealing the rug-making culture and process there. From colorfully dressed peasants tending sheep, carding wool, and boiling natural dyes in Turkey and India's remote rug-weaving villages and trading centers to the sophisticated showrooms and the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul, as well as mosques, temples, restaurants, and homes where beautiful rugs are on display, this visually rich and authoritative volume travels behind the scenes of the mysterious, exotic cultures famous for this centuries-old art form.
Chapters cover the history and lore of the Silk Route and the famous weaving centers of India and Turkey, relating stories of the weavers, dyers, and merchants; superstitions; religious symbolism, and Middle Eastern aesthetics. Also included is a wealth of rug examples and information on the rugs themselves, such as rug types, dyes, symbology, weaving techniques, and knots. There is also professional advice for rug buyers: an assessment of the rug-making industry today; a complete guide to evaluating and purchasing a rug; a discussion of buying and trading customs; and helpful tips on negotiating abroad as well as on decorating with oriental rugs throughout the home. A glossary provides definitions of oriental rug terminology, while an appendix rounds out the book with a complete discussion of cleaning and repair.
At once a unique journey to the world's finest oriental rug-making centers and an authoritative reference, Oriental Rugs of the Silk Route is captivating, informative reading for beginning and knowledgeable rug enthusiasts and travelers alike.

An Alternative perspective........2003-07-25
I recently purchased John Gregorian's book with the anticipation that it would resemble his father's earlier book that is among my favourite "rug books".(I have been a collector for over 30 years.) I was disappointed and must add it to other texts of recent years that do not offer a balanced view of present day rug production.
Iran still produces many beautiful and exquisite pieces that until recently were embargoed by the USA. Fortunately for those of us that reside outside the USA we can obtain these pieces but they no longer appear in many recent books. While rugs from Pakistan, India, China, etc may copy Iranian originals, they rarely use the same dye colors and lack the mastery of the originals.
To all budding authors out there, "can we please have a truly representative modern rug book free of political prejudice and exclusion?"
The Ultimate Guide to buying oriental rugs.......2001-06-15
We are avid rug collectors and found this book to be a valuable resource. Even though we are fairly knowledgeable about rugs, we still learned from this book. It's the kind of book we wish we had when we were first starting our collection. The author reveals so much in a truly delightful way -- it's kind of like having a close friend or family member with many years of experience guide you through the whole world of oriental rugs. It's hard to say what we like best about this book because it is such a quality piece of work -- from the thoughtful and interesting writing, to the stunning color and black and white photographs, to the fine typesetting, layout and binding. This book is a work of art in and of itself, much like a fine oriental rug. We especially like the colorful stories about the rug weavers, their culture, and way of life. Art is often a great window on another culture, and the author gets this across in a beautiful way.
Informative fascinating reading for oriental rug enthusiasts.......2000-09-04
In Oriental Rugs Of The Silk Route, John Gregorian draws upon his years of expertise to provide an illustrated tour of modern day oriental rug-making centers. The informative, often fascinating text is beautifully and profusely illustrated with superb color photography, complemented by vintage bland-and-white images of Middle-Easter villages and cities, the rug-making culture and process. The reader will find a wealth of expert advice for buying an oriental rug, how to evaluate quality and price, buying and trading customs (with tips on negotiating a purchase), and invaluable ideas respecting interior decoration with original rugs. Oriental Rugs Of The Silk Route is enhanced further with a glossary of oriental rug terminology and a helpful appendix on oriental rug cleaning and repair. Oriental Rugs Of The Silk Route is rewarding reading for the oriental rug enthusiast, and a highly recommended introduction for the novice.
Not Just Another Coffee-table Book.......2000-07-25
Finally, a niche book with character that focuses on the highest quality carpets. Beyond the pictures it chronicles the Gregorian family experience with this genre and brings us back to the days when the original treasures were more readily available - not that long ago! A must for the serious collector or the simple enthusiast.
Reveals The Fascinating Art Form Of Bargaining.......2000-06-29
Gregorian's book is compelling stuff and speaks about a part of the world where bargaining is as much an artform as the rugs themselves. Gregorian is an expert on buying, using extremely sophisticated, yet seemingly simple, methods developed over generations. It reminds me of what the owner of the most expensive men's clothing store in America once told me, "I make more money buying the fabrics than I do selling the suits."
Being an author myself ("Why People Don't Buy Things"...the new science of selling products, services and ideas based on over 50,000 interviews), I'm fascinated by the time-proven methods employed by Gregorian. Obviously, they've been passed down by his family and work as well today as they did years ago.
This book is well worth the read even if you're not into rugs. It could help you save money the next time you're buying an oriental rug, an expensive painting or a luxury automobile.

New and Improved?.......2002-02-25
The work in this book reaffirms a thought (or if it is too vague, call it a notion) I've had about design since my student days. --Which is this: there is nothing easier than taking someone else's work and playing with it. (Call it "improving" it, if you still believe in such things.) In my experience, I think it is hard NOT to better your predecessors' work (or not to SEEM to do so, anyway) by virtue of the fact that anything you do after someone else is going to be informed, by default, with a more current, more fashionable tweak than he/she could possibly have had in hand or mind back when, and will therefore look a little fresher. But it isn't only that. Redesign is by its very nature a reaction to something concrete; re-designers are afforded the luxury of a springboard, as it were, whereas first-time, original design is facing a white, staring-back page without direct precedent, with nothing but attitude, experience and habit as your guide. (For many designers, just seeing a staid and conservative design will be enough to unlock a battery of inspired, near-satirical reactions that can be channeled productively onto a page.) So another difference between the Befores and Afters here is that the Afters had an advantage in place when they began their work for a given client that the Befores often lacked. Are they not therefore accountable to a tougher, higher standard? It seems to me, in a book of this kind, they would be. And I am not sure I have detected that the author has kept up her part of the bargain here.
The Befores in this book look fairly servicable. Some are downright good. Most of the redesigned "breakthroughs" are not a lot more than cosmetic touchups that add the luster of newer, friskier style to "dated" designs. --Designs some of which are indeed stolid, printshop-flavored affairs, but which more often were built on the trends of THEIR day, and so dated as quickly as many of these After solutions probably will. That is probably the real danger in books like this. The author keeps it lite, WAY lite (think of Dynamic Graphics magazine) and perepuates the notion that design is primarily about fashionable styling, this decades coat of new paint.
WONDERFUL for the self-taught designer!.......2001-03-14
i've always had a natural talent for composition and design, but lack the formal training in that dicipline. this book is wonderful because it allows you to grow as a designer by taking you on voyage inside the creative process of some of the country's leading firms. why was one logo chosen over another? how did the design firm successfully interpret and execute the needs of the client? why was a certain symbol chosen for a logo? and most important how to make a good design an awesome design. wonderful, large full-color photographs of before and after the makeover really bring the point home and help you see for yourself. you can't help but come away with ideas on how to improve the designs you work with everyday. great price too!

Book Description
After the death of Marion Morrison, known as John Wayne, in 1979, President Jimmy Carter said that Wayne "was bigger than life. In an age of few heroes, he was the genuine article. But he was more than a hero; he was a symbol of many of the qualities that made America great." The first section of this study concentrates on Wayne's style of work and sphere of action as an actor: The man who works for a living and is concerned with his audience and the constraints of his immediate environment. The second section examines the artist: the man who lives in his art, who disappears into his character as an archetype of human fears and desires. Analyses of films that have made Wayne a hero are presented in the third section. A comprehensive filmography is included. Numerous photographs.
