Book Description

“SOPHISTICATED AND SUSPENSEFUL . . . TAUTLY WRITTEN . . . Wilentz knows the world she writes about very well, and her descriptions have a solid specificity that lends authority to her fiction.”
–The New York Times Book Review

“At a closed Israeli checkpoint, Marina, a Palestinian mother, clutches her ailing boy, desperate for access to Jerusalem and its doctors. When a young Israeli soldier waits too long before deciding to disobey orders, a martyr is born. Thus begins a graceful, painful, illuminating novel of the Middle East. . . . [Wilentz’s] prose tugs at the reader. . . . The characters are magnetic. . . . [This] is a very human tale of regrets, revenge, and the elusive nature of absolution.”
–Entertainment Weekly

“SO PRECISE, SO STARTLING, SO UNFORGETTABLE. . . . These characters are all pawns of history and politics, but Wilentz makes them live.”
–Los Angeles Times

“MAGNIFICENT . . . Wilentz writes with a prose style reminiscent of The New Yorker’s highest ambitions: crystalline, pure, faultlessly communicative. . . . Like the best documentaries, Martyrs’ Crossing allows us unprecedented access to a little-understood and often misrepresented part of the world.”
–Chicago Tribune

“A BRILLIANTLY RESEARCHED MEDIDATION ON THE CRISIS IN THE MIDDLE EAST . . . Martyr’s Crossing matches Damascus Gate in the quality of research and the mass of intriguing characters–and yet it remains a lean thriller.”
–The New York Observer

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.......2005-11-03

At first the title and cover intrigued me, but soon I was drawn into the plot, which will continue to connect to current events for years to come. The story takes place in West Bank and is told from two sides. The book revolves around the death of a Palestinian two-year-old, Ibrahim, whose mother was delayed by Israeli guards, as she tried to take her son across the border to an Israeli hospital. Some parts are told from the point of view of Maria, the Palestinian woman, who is the daughter of a famous Palestinian intellectual living in America, and also the wife of Hassan Hajimi, an imprisoned Hamas member. Other parts are told from the eyes of Ari Dolton, the soldier who was ordered to keep Maria from crossing the border. Controversy ensues over the death; some Palestinians proclaim Ibrahim a martyr and this a new cause to fight against Israel. The Israeli papers portray Ibrahim as simply a future terrorist. But for Maria, her father, and Hassan, this is not a news event, not a new cause, but simply the tragic death of a child. Wilentz manages to show both sides fairly; there is no good and evil. Instead, she paints a picture of a conflict that affects life, survival, and skips over no one. The book, using engaging dialogue, language, and a variety of fascinating characters, is hard to put down. I would recommend anyone interested in history or current events read it to get a more personal, yet not one-sided, view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

4 out of 5 stars We are all at different levels of understanding.......2005-04-14

I read this book several years ago, and continue to recommend it to my friends and book clubs. As I read the various reviews, many who were dissappointed with this book seem to be emotionally charged about the situation in the middle east. Unfortunately, there are many in the populous who are not quite as educated, nor as emotionally charged by this particular situation. This book does a wonderful job of reaching out to those who want to begin to understand the human aspect involved in this, and many other conflicts. As a mother, and one who has lived in Africa amidst severe and tragic conflict, I found this book to be both timely and engaging. Wilentz does a good job of character development without political judgement. Not an easy thing to do when conveying such charged subject.

5 out of 5 stars Passion and Politics: What Is Worth Killing and Dying For?.......2001-11-01

What novel could be more timely and inviting than an intelligent, literate, readable, suspenseful, emotionally compelling, and thoughtful story treating the question: What--among the varied human experiences of family, friendship, history, culture, religion, tradition, heritage, territory, nationhood, ideals, values, competing loyalties, and the notion of truth itself--is worth living for, working for--and especially--killing and/or dying for?

To be sure, Wilentz never comes right out and asks these questions--instead, her beautifully plotted story subtly raises, explores, and offers insight into all of them, by offering a wide range of intelligent characters from varying ages, backgrounds, and experiences, who are arriving at a multiplexity of conclusions and viewpoints while facing intricately intertwined human dilemmas.

I know this book will provoke animated and thoughtful discussion in my book club.

I was first attracted to the book (when browsing in the "New Book Section" of our library) by Wilentz's beautiful writing style, as well as her very evident intellectual depth. She has clearly spent much time living in and reporting on Israel/The West Bank, but more importantly, she has thought long and respectfully about disparate approaches to politics, patriotism, and violence.

This is not a heavy, depressing book, it's a love story--in fact a compilation of moving and convincing love stories about the varieties of passionate human relationships. It's gripping--at times seeming to move inexorably toward a Greekly tragic conclusion (although I found the end surprisingly heartening.) I felt I understood each character's struggle to find integrity and meaning; Wilentz works hard to give each viewpoint a human face and a convincing history and testimony.

Wilentz has a talent for character and for realistic thoughts/dialogue. She makes all her characters appealing and believable (sometimes grotesquely so), all worthy of respect and understanding, in their individual struggles to make sense of the most difficult human challenges.

Although I'm fascinated with the political and spiritual questions Wilentz raises, and although I've read urgently in the areas of war, peace, politics, religion and philosophy, I have never been to Israel and know no Palestinians. I felt that Wilentz's pen was painfully sharp, cynical, and for the most part balanced, when aimed at the hypocrisies of both "sides," and also strongly empathetic and sympathetic, when focused on the pain and grievances of both sides.

But ultimately, this is not a book about Jews and Palestinians. It's a book about home, and integrity, and about the personal qualities, values, and actions that make a person deserve to call a building and a child and a spouse and a friend and a city and a land, "his/her own."

And although Wilentz never directly mentions the word "nationalism," I believe this is also a book about whether the concept of nationalism is ultimately helpful or hurtful to human life.

I couldn't put this book down. I loved the story, the style, the characters, the author, and learned a great deal about important issues I care deeply about. This is great writing from a great writer. I hope someday to read many more of her books....

1 out of 5 stars Read Amira Hass Instead!.......2001-07-15

Agree with many reviewers here. There is something profoundly false in this book. Disagree that editing is what was needed. A deeper understanding of the Palestinian people is sorely lacking and ditto: I found the Israeli soldier's musings purely farsical. If you want to know what the Palestinians endure, read Amira Hass' beautiful "Drinking the Sea at Gaza", though it isn't fiction, it might as well be. Read Rubber Bullets by Yarom Ezrahi, or Coming Home to Jerusalem, or Avi Shlaim.. This book is using and abusing a terrible situation, not adding to its emotional truth with imagination, but detracting from that, as the non-fiction books mentioned do not. Now, this is a leap: but why a twenty year old photo? And why such a totally dismal cover, one that is discordant with text. Everything about this book, including that I bought it, bothers me. I just take the Middle East too seriously to bear this tripe. Seriously, Read AMIRA HASS; she's the Giant in this pond of writers.

2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2001-07-09

As a great fan of books dealing with the Israeli/ Palestinian conflict, I opened this book with high hopes. But I was terribly disappointed. This book needed a great deal of editing it did not get, and a few re-writes too. It doesn't get to the depth of a situation that so badly needs elucidating. This book doesn't succeed on any count: not as a good read, not as an elucidating read.

Viscount Leo Kierston is sent to escort Cordelia Brandenburg on the journey to her new husband, Prince Michael von Sachsen. Cordelia is fully aware of her duty to her family and prepared to do as she is told, but she cannot help losing her heart to Leo long before she meets Michael. Upon their arrival in Versailles, Cordelia reluctantly bids farewell to Leo. She soon discovers that her husband is a vile and dangerous man. Cordelia confides in Leo, and together they plot her escape, determining she must take Michael's twin daughters--Leo's nieces--along. But secrets surface that threaten to destroy more than their plan, and in the end only their love can save them.

      Book Description

      Dear Reader,

What comes to mind when you think of a diamond slipper? Cinderella, perhaps? That's what Cordelia Brandenburg imagines when her godparents arrange a
marriage for her with a man she's never met--a marriage that will take her to Versailles, far from the rigid confines of her childhood home. The betrothal
gift is a charm bracelet with a tiny, glittering diamond slipper attached...as befits a journey into a fairy-tale future.

But Cordelia--young, headstrong, and completely adorable--runs into trouble right away. Her escort to the wedding is the golden-eyed, sensual, teasing Viscount Leo Kierston. For Cordelia, it's love at first sight. Yet Leo seems to see only a spoiled child--perhaps it's the way she cheats at chess--and Cordelia is determined to show him the woman beneath.

There is, however, no escaping her arranged marriage. She's devastated to discover that her new husband is an utterly loathsome tyrant who will stop at nothing to satisfy his twisted desires.

My heart went out to Cordelia as she struggles courageously against a man determined to break her spirit.  But her husband has a secret, one that will bring down the vengeance of Viscount Kierston and all who have reason to hate him.

I hope you'll enjoy this love story of two of my very favorite characters.

      Warmest wishes,

      Jane Feather

P.S. The charm bracelet makes its next appearance in The Silver Rose.
      Look for it next summer.

      2 out of 5 stars Annoying.......2004-11-08

This book annoyed the crap out of me. I read probably one romance title a week and this I acutally put aside until I finished another that I hoped would be more interesting. It starrted off OK but Cordelia was really immature and far too young for Leo. I understand women and young girls were married at an early age and expected to consumate these marriages - I guess it irritated me more that she 'fell in love' so quickly and Leo encouraged it. The spousal abuse was tastefully done - if that is possible due to subject matter, but I still didn't enjoy it and didn't particulary enjoy the 'happy ending' epilogue. I've tried a few of Jane Feather's book's and I think something is missing in most of them. The 'Bride' series was Ok but I have read alot better by other authors.

      4 out of 5 stars great read.......2004-03-05

i found Cordelia absolutely charming. How can you not love a character that can look great, even while cheating. The scene while they're playing dice in the carriage was great!
And plus, how could you not want to have a dashing, hunky hero like Leo come to your rescue? Man, he can rescue me anytime! LOL.

I enjoyed the detail that Jane did to describe the palaces and the real characters. I'm sure she gave some twists to the personalities of Marie-Antoinette and the King; but they were definitely helpful in the describing the scene of palace life and how they were supposed to act.

      4 out of 5 stars Good Suspense.......2002-11-16

I have been a fan of Jane Feathers for a while and although this is not one of my favorites I enjoyed the darkness of it. Cordelia is married by proxy to Prince Michael. Vicount Leo Kierston, brother-in-law of the Prince, escorts her from the Austrian courts to France in order to meet her husband and also attend her friend Marie Antoinette's own wedding. Cordelia falls in love with Leo at first sight and tells him so. He tries to avoid her advancements and remain honorable even though he can't get her out of his mind and is falling for her too. He tries to answer her questions about her unknown husband as honestly as possible without revealing his unease and dislike of the man. He has suspisions of his twin sister's sudden death 4 years earlier but has no proof. After Cordelia meets Michael she realizes he rules his home and servants with an iron hand and expects her to yield to him and obey his every command. When she shows defiance, Michael punishes her in the bedroom by raping her repeatedly. He's a control freak and she his prisoner. He keeps a journal describing all his evil thinking and Cordelia discovers these jounals and learns that he is a sick monster that poisoned his first wife when he suspected she was cheating on him. I know most women find rape offensive but Jane doesn't go into the gross details and leaves most of it up to your own imaginations. It was very suspensefull knowing that there was evil lurking in her husband Prince Michael and wondering when and how he was going to strike. I would have liked it if Cordelia was the one to deal the final blow instead of her lover Leo.

      1 out of 5 stars Sadly Disappointed........2002-07-19

Jane Feather is a very good author, but The Diamond Slipper is not a favorite. Leo was wrong for not telling her what kind of man she was marrying. He was foul for that, because he just wanted a woman there to look after his nieces. Cordelia had to put up with all the pain, heartache and humiliation because of Leo. The thing that pissed me off was that sex with him was supposed to make the suffering worth while. I won't buy that! Then they had to leave town after it was all over, like they did something wrong. Leo is a punk, and there is no way any sane woman would've put up with that for "love" of the man who sold you out. If this man cared so much about her, he would never have done that to her and then took forever to rescue her. I still love Jane Feather's books, but these two were a match made in hell.

5 out of 5 stars First in the Charm Bracelet series.......2001-08-17

I loved this book! Cordelia was absolutely adorable. My heart went out to her for all the hardships she had to endure from her husband. But I thought that it made it that more enjoyable when she discovers love in Leo Kierston's arms. This story was full of humor, adventure, hardships and love. To me, that's what makes a beautiful, well-written love story. I recommend this story to everyone and I can't wait to read the other two in the series.

I could not put this book down. The first story, "Cindy and the Fella" is a very charming story. It flows smoothly and has very likable characters. There are quite a few laugh-out-loud scenes in the story. I enjoyed it so much, I'll probably read it again soon. The second story, "Calling All Glass Slippers" did not pull me in the way "Cindy and the Fella" did, but it still was a great story also. I like how the two stories are related.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for students.......2004-02-20

Being a swiss chef who went to school with the old Pauli I was surprised to see this new Edition based on North American Laws and guide lines. Not only does it cover Nutrition, kitchen Managment and basic history of cooking - it also contains a great Lexicon of most commenly used ingredients. There are also many basic recepies included and a great chapter on sauces, soups and basic cooking techniques - a must buy for all seriously interested cooking students. Just alone because it is soo much easier to read than the proffessional chef...

2 out of 5 stars the mundane half of a great culinary reference.......1999-05-24

Classical Cooking ("Der Lehrbuch der Küche", "Technologie culinaire") is easily recognized by most hotel/F&B professionals trained in Western Europe and often just called the "Pauli".

Unfortunately, the American publisher of the 3rd edition (John Wiley) has choosen to split the book into two volumes. The recipes are actually the second half of Classical Cooking and while they are consistently good, the really amazing part of the original version happens to be the theory section that professional ethics, sanitation, and safety, kitchen management, food descriptions and purchasing, nutrition, menu planning, accounting, before going to cooking theory.

Apparently, John Wiley intends on publishing this content at some point, but it is a real shame that they chose to A.) break up the book in two, and B.) publish the recipes first. It is the missing theory and methods section that teaches the fundamentals of running a restaurant, hotel, or institutional kitchen.

One excellent solution is to seek out the out-of-print 2nd edition (Van Nostrand Reinhold) in used bookstores. The complete 2nd edition (which has both theory and recipes, just like the German and French editions used in Swiss hotel management schools) merits its reputation as possibly the most important book for an F&B manager to own.

Before dust jackets wrapped every hardcover behind a shield of paper, a book's binding was its only advertisement, and the shelves of bibliophiles were lined with staid leather-bound tomes. Then came the Art Deco designs of Pierre Legrain and Rose Adler, who transformed bookbinding into a medium of playful and dazzling experimentation and craftsmanship. Their colorful, imaginative works, often made in exotic materials, are found only in a few prized collections and have rarely been available to the general public. now, this selection of more than sixty designs, colored-paper maquettes, and realized bindings are collected in one exquisite volume, with insightful texts introducing the work and discuss its revolutionary effect on modern design.
Among the brilliant array of bindings are ones made especially for works by Colette, Paul Verlaine, Andre Gide, Guillaume Apollinaire, Stephane Mallarme, Michel Leiris, and Jean Giraudoux.
Art Deco Bookbinding accompanies the exhibition of the same name at the New York Public Library's Humanities and Social Science Library beginning in February 2004.

I was very disappointed with this wreath book. It was nothing but an old book with a new cover. False advertising as I thought the wreath designs would resemble the cover. Not so. Just goes to show the old saying "Never judge a book by its cover is true!"

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Creative, Inspiring Book!!!!!.......2006-11-10

I ordered this book looking for some new ideas for making different and exciting wreaths and this book gave me exactly what I was looking for in every aspect. Plus it gave me ideas to build on and my imagination ran wild with creativity. I love it when that happens. It is an excellent book and I'm very glad I purchased it. The author did an excellent job of presenting the material and the photography is beautiful. Thanks for a great book Kudos to you.

5 out of 5 stars Learn to make your own wreaths from what you grow and find........2001-07-26

As the subtitle implies, this is an idea book. The wreaths are beautiful and the instructions simple. The focus is not only on giving guidelines for preparing the flowers and making the wreaths, but on sharing the elements of design necessary for striking out on your own.

Mr. Kollath steers you through preparing your work space and choosing your tools as only someone who has made many wreaths could do. Instructions are given for air drying and silica preservation of flowers. There are also some wreaths made with fresh flowers.

This is a book for those who want to use what they grow and find. There are even instructions on making your own grapevine wreaths, which Mr. Kollath admits is one of his favorite things to do.

There are some pretty unusual ideas in this book, like making a baby's wreath with building blocks, and using small wreaths for package toppers.

Whatever your color scheme or design theme, there is sure to be a gorgeous full color photo of one of Mr. Kollath's wreaths to spur you on.

Richard Kollath's book has been an inspiration and only added to my own creative pieces of work.

Using principles outlined in her previous book on interior home design, Pure Style, Jane Cumberbatch now moves the party outside to the patio and garden, a space that is often underutilized in today's over-air-conditioned, remote-controlled world. Her concepts are simple: lots of supersaturated color, interesting textures, plenty of plants, comfortable sturdy furniture, and tough fabrics make the porch and yard a fun place to be. Heck, why not eat out there too? Cumberbatch suggests morning espresso, lunch alfresco, afternoon tea, and casual birthday parties. It's not earth-shatteringly original, but Cumberbatch has a true flair for the simple and attractive, and the pictures are lovely. It would be nice to see someone sitting in those pretty, sunny chairs eating the summery food, but perhaps their very emptiness makes them seem that much more available. --Barrie Trinkle

I loved this book. Mostly the simple food ideas Jane has. Her writing style makes me want to go outside and eat a simple meal and enjoy the world around me. I wish she would write a Pure Style cookbook with the way she prepares every day food she and her family enjoys. I'd love to go to Jane's some summer afternoon and have a great meal or a winter evening by the roaring fire.

I really liked the simplicity of Jane Cumberbatch's book, Pure Style, and I was equally impressed with Pure Style Outdoors. She presents numerous images of serene and unassuming design concepts that can recreated or imitated easily. The book demonstrates that beauty can be found and created by displaying simple, everyday objects. Pure Style Outdoors offers inspiration for those of us who have up till now avoided decorating or updating their outdoor spaces.

Elegant and playful this great new title takes an aesthetic approach to web graphics, focusing on the impulse of the web designer to create something that transcends the purely commercial dimension of site design.

Now Loading looks at the influence the web has had on design and how web designers achieve a balance of information, composition, symbols, color and audience satisfaction despite the restrictions of cyberspace. 5 out of 5 stars I was very Pleased.......2007-01-18

With the book and was not disappointed. The book is divided into sections that range from iconography, products, services, animation, and a few others...It also has a section "private sector" where the average joe expresses their thoughts on the subject. Somewhat refreshing. I purchased it for my daughter's book report on her uncle who is a featured artist in the book, and was not let down. I found it imformative, insightful, and well designed for a person who is not familiar within the world of Web Graphics.
