Book Description

Kim McLarin's debut novel, Taming It Down, was called "pitch perfect" (Publishers Weekly), "spirited" (New York Times Book Review), and "engrossing" (USA Today). Now McLarin has written a second provocative and emotionally complex novel that further explores the complexities of love and race.

Porter Stockman, a determined white reporter, is covering the riots in the streets of South Central Los Angeles for the Philadelphia Record on the day that four Los Angeles police officers are acquitted of assaulting Rodney King. Lenora Page, a black woman, risks her own safety to come to his aid when the hostile mob turns on Porter, holding off his assailants and guiding him off the block. When she disappears into the chaos, Porter fears he'll never see his heroine again. But weeks later their paths intersect once more in the Record's newsroom. Lenora, a prominent reporter for the Baltimore Sun, has been extended an offer from the Philadelphia paper, a position she chooses to accept -- to Porter's secret delight.

For Porter it was love at first sight, or so he thinks. During the course of the next year, he fights to win the trust and love of a suspicious and deeply conflicted Lenora. Porter and Lee are both smart, skeptical journalists, both grown up and certain they know how much of a role race plays -- or does not play -- in their thoughts, feelings, and lives. But as they fall in love, they are forced to reexamine their assumptions about race: Lee must decide how much of her life she should dedicate to her people and how much she can save for herself, and Porter must decide whether his liberal political views and belief in equality really run deep in his heart. Ultimately, however, it is not societal disapproval or skepticism about Porter and Lee's relationship that threatens to keep them apart, but their own insecurities, assumptions, and deeply hidden -- but nevertheless powerful -- fears about their union.

Crafted with elegance and power, Meeting of the Waters is both a love story and a meditation on how the intricate mating dance between men and women is further complicated by the issue of race. Probing divided allegiances, split loyalties, and the pain of confronting one's own prejudice, this poignant novel presents an impassioned and bittersweet look at interracial love in America today.

4 out of 5 stars A Romance with Substance.......2007-09-08

For those who enjoy the fluffy romance novel, this book isn't for you. McLarin's Lee and Porter are real people. This story is so believable. It takes you back to that turbulent time during the riots and you have to admire the characters for even attempting a relationship then. Their story was touching and for a while there I thought they wouldn't make it, but they did. I highly recommend this book for fans of interracial romance novels.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-03-16

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Oddly enough, I read it while dealing with issues regarding interracial dating with a woman whom I've known for almost a decade and considered one of my best friends. She finds it disagreeable, I say, love is where you find it.

At any rate, this novel forced me to recognize aspects of what it truly means for some people to date outside of their race. It forced me to realize the truth about it, but also the absurdity: not the absurdity of loving someone who may not share the same heritage, but the lunacy of having to contend with it, and how it can make one insane with doubt. I know that it is a work of fiction, but I'm glad that Lee and Porter made it through. It confirms what James Baldwin and I believe: "Love is where you find it". Indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-03-01

This is one the best interracial romance novels I've ever read. It has a more literary tone, for those who wish not to indulge in fluff. It really captures the mind/persona/thought processes/experience of how a Anglo-American male goes through when they choose to be in a relationship witha woman of Afric descent. I definitely encourage men who would like to become involved with women of Afric descent as opposed to other novels because this novel is mostly from the male character's aspect and he thinks things that most novels don't say.

3 out of 5 stars Worth a read and added to your collection..........2007-02-05

I found this book after seeing it in another person's list of favorites. I am an AVID IR reader and like the stories that deal more with romance. This book was a lot deeper. I was not sure if I would like it after seeing some of the reviews but was excited to get started. It was a slow start but the story took time to build the characters. I liked Lee most of the time. I enjoyed her strength but after a while I wanted to tell her to relax. Porter was interesting to read about. He seemed to have some growth in the novel but I would have liked to seen them grow together more. The ending needed a little more about them coming to terms. It ended too quick for my taste. Overall I liked the book and would tell anyone to give it a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Great Novel for a Book Club.......2006-12-30

This is the perfect book to spark heated intellectual discussion. I loved the storyline and the setting in which it takes place. Character development was superb and the conflict was weaved smoothly into the storyline. Put this on the top of your book club list!

Book Description

She'd Never Marry Him!
The last man Arabella Hadley ever wishes to see again is Lucien Deveraux, the handsome, dissolute Duke of Wexford -- who broke her innocent heart years ago and disappeared to London. So when she finds an unconscious man on her deserted country road and sees that it's Lucien, she's tempted to leave him there. But even more appalling than his presence is the brazen kiss he plants on her shocked lips and her response! So it would be totally insane to take him home to recover -- wouldn't it?

Except For One Small Thing...
Lucien dares not reveal why he's returned to his country estate -- or why he abandoned the strong-willed beauty years ago. Especially since Arabella clearly has secrets of her own. But when her scheming, marriage-minded aunts successfully compromise them, the two are forced to become man and wife. Which makes it ever harder for both to battle the passion that never disappeared...

4 out of 5 stars Secrets abound! and a great regency........2007-08-08

We first met Lucien Devereaux, Duke of Wexford, in The Abduction Of Julia, as a cynical, amused, droll and somewhat dissolute widower. Unbeknown to just about everybody, Lucien has a dangerous secret life, involved with - actually, if I told you I'd have to kill you... He's pursuing these, ah, secret activities when he gets thrown by his horse. Knocked unconscious, he's rescued by none other than the disgruntled woman he seduced and abandoned years ago. Arabella Hadley is risking everything to keep her family solvent. Having a suspicious Duke - an amorous ex-lover at that - suddenly ensconced in her guest bedroom is really complicating her secret life! Secrets abound in this book. It makes for great reading, as Lucien and Arabella guess and second-guess and try to outsmart each other. Arabella's dotty aunties delight, and the secondary love story with Arabella's brother and Lucien's sister is fast, fiery, and entirely delicious. And, quite frankly, Lucien can charm the birds out of the trees, let alone Arabella out of her clothes when he sets his mind to it. Ooh.

5 out of 5 stars This book ties for 1st place with her book "An Affair to Remember".......2006-01-15

I LOVED this book. I thought it was just wonderful. I loved everything about it. I love regency/ton books set in the country.
I loved the main characters & the secondary characters. The plots
were great! Yes, plots! There was the main plot, about her being a smuggler & him being the man sent to break up the smuggling ring,
but there were also many other plots within this book -- Her brother & his sister's romance, the romance between her aunt & a knight, the family treasure, and so much more! Perfect!

On the 1-10 scale, for me, this is a solid 10, maybe even an 11.
On the star scale, 5 stars plus!
If you're only going to read one or two Hawkins books to start with, read them out of order, read this one and "An Affair to
Remember", another 5 star winner.

My next book will be "One Lucky Lord" by Kim Bennet, which is a
pseydom for Karen Hawkins. After I've read it, then I will have
read all the Karen Hawkins/Kim Bennet books there are, minus the
book for teens called "Catherine & The Pirate". Since I'm not a teen, I think I'll pass on that one, though I'm sure it's great!

2 out of 5 stars Boring & Disappointing.......2005-04-27

It's a good thing I've read other of Karen Hawkins books and enjoyed them. Otherwise, after reading this book, I would never buy her again.

I realize that this is one of her first books. Her writing is good here and has only improved through time. However, she needed to have done a bit more homework or been edited better. If Lucien's father was dead when Lucien was 20, he was already duke then. But he was NEVER a viscount. The son of a living duke is a marquess/marquis.

Frankly, the big fly in my reading ointment here is Arabella. She is way beyond annoying. I really get tired of heroines who are listed on the back cover as "independent and prideful". Or words to that effect. It's pretty much a red flag to me that she is just stubborn and arrogant. A big for instance is her trying to open the stove damper and not wanting help. Or the stable mucking scene. IMO, she's just not very likeable. If she hasn't gotten over being hurt at 16 by the time she's 26, there is no hope for her. She's one who loves to wallow in past misery. Yuck.

I could never get a handle on Lucien. He just was so blah to me. Not much of a hero. I know that writers sometimes have trouble getting the h/h to be under the same roof, but Lucien's injury just doesn't fly. He was supposed to be a gentleman. If so, he should have taken himself off at the first opportunity. At least to the nearby inn.

The smuggling thing was boring. There just didn't seem to be much a plot to this book. It rambles on endlessly. The bad guy was just comical, not scary.

I read to page 160 before I threw the book at the wall. I just couldn't waste any more time on it. As I said, I'm glad that I've read others of Ms. Hawkins books. I loved the St. John brothers series. I have yet to read "The Abduction of Julia" but will remedy that when my amazon.com order arrives next week. The reason I gave this book 2 stars was because Ms. Hawkins writing is lovely.

5 out of 5 stars I just loved this book!.......2004-06-25

After reading the Abduction of Julia I found myself wanting to read once again about Lucien in a Belated Bride. There is just something about this man that I found so totally captivating. It is one thing for a woman to not get over a man but I find it even more compelling when such a handsome rogue after ten years has not gotten over his Bella. I was reminded in the Abduction of Julia what a lost sole Lucien continued to be and just had to reread how he finally finds the love of his life. Lucien is one of Karen Hawkins best male heroes!! Excellent read - the second time every bit as good as the first!

5 out of 5 stars 4 & 1/2 stars; would have been 5 with an epilogue.......2004-05-11

Not quite as good as The Adbuction of Julia, in my opinion, but still a wonderful story. Unlike tAoJ, A Belated Bride drags just a little in spots and needed a resolution to Robert & Liza's situation.

Nevertheless, Hawkins delights with a story of second chances. Arabella is a strong heroine in the highly capable and responsible, but still heartbroken mold. Lucien is the hero who loved and left, thinking he was doing the right thing, but never able to really face up to his decisions...until he ends up back in her life. Arabella and Lucien's passion sizzles at every encounter, and the reader so wants them to get it right this time.

A stable of interesting secondary characters helps keep the momentum and humor going. And there's plenty of humor with Arabella's aunts around. The plotting may not be quite as tight as tAoJ and the main charcters just slightly less heartfelt, but not enough to seriously diminish the book's appeal. As I said, I'd drop it only 1/2 a star. Therefore, since it certainly deserves better than 4 stars, I've stuck with the 5-star rating. It's a good follow-up to tAoJ, in which Lucien was introduced (and in which he is very appealing as well).

As the bloody tide of war spread over Gor, Tarl Cabot, outcast by the Priest-Kings, became deeply enmeshed in the military combat between the empire of Ar and the invaders from Cos. His fate would depend upon which proved victorious in the coming confrontation at Ar's besieged river port. And it looked like Tarl himself might prove the deciding factor that would tip the scales of destiny for one side or the other... With Renegades of Gor, all the complexity and intrigue of John Norman's saga comes together to create an adventure replete with danger, excitement, and romance in the unforgettable realm of Gor---where courage remains meaningful, and pride and honor have never been forgotten.

In the midst of some wordy Norman novels comes "Rengades of Gor". Action from start to satisfying finish. Our hero very much himself and doing things the way he does them because he IS Tarl Cabot. All of this set amidst the seige of Ars Station, with Norman providing the the well researched details his books have been known for. Personally, I rank this one right up there with Nomads, Raiders, and Explorers. Set among a long winded series ... Renegades is a return to the glory days.

                          2 out of 5 stars unsatisfied.......2007-05-27

while i find this book a good read, i was left very unsatisfied. i felt there was much left out of this book that could have been touched on. also i found myself bored to death through the authors commentary on what little translation of the sumerian texts there were. while i was led to believe that this book would discuss much of their religious customs, myths, and beliefs, it touches on very little of any. while this is not a terrible read i am sure there is much better than this.

4 out of 5 stars Really great; really short........2006-03-26

I found this book to be a very refreshing introduction to Sumerian mythology.

However, like the author states some of the translations are not that accurate. Also, I wish this book was longer.

Besides those two things, this book is awesome and I recommend it to anyone just beginning to study Sumerian mythology.

4 out of 5 stars Out of date but still worth reading.......2002-02-26

Any piece of scholarship that has a preface that baldly states that quite a bit of the following translations are wrong immediately throws out warning signals.
However, this is quite a useful handbook, even if the author pointedly tells the reader that "History begins at Sumer" is more accurate. It has that touch that encompasses all ancient historical secondary sources written in the early part of the twentieth century - a narrative style, whereby it is just as important to provide both a description of actions and a background of the people and methods that got the several thousand clay tablets translated.
Given today's somewhat dry "facts, facts, facts" attitude of most ancient historians, it is most refreshing because understanding those who compiled the work gives a better understanding of the translation.
The book excellently gives a rundown of the pantheon of Sumerian Gods, the acculturation of Sumerian mythology into Semitic and translates a goodly portion (sometimes inaccurately as the preface warns!) of the tablets.
Whilst any serious Sumerian scholar must move on to latter translations and works, this is a good starting point, particularly for those wanting to see a 'decipherment' in progress.

Soffritto is a homey, meandering cookbook that makes you feel as if you're standing at author Benedetta Vitali's side as she sautés the minced red onion, celery, and carrot mixture for which the book is named. "Good cooking is an act of creativity," she says. "Use the recipes as indications, and trust your instincts to fill in the blanks." A simple Pomarola (Tomato Sauce with Garlic and Basil) can be prepared in just 10 minutes--the variations are as endless as your imagination. Try Fagioli (White Beans with Prosciutto, Tomato, and Sage) as a main dish or pair it with Poached Sea Bass. Finish your meal with Bonnet (Amaretto Custard). Each recipe is a story and therefore is as enjoyable to read as it is to follow. Depending on your palate, some recipes may be better off as stories than as dinners, as evidenced by Ragu con Colli Repieni (Meat Sauce with Stuffed Chicken Necks). --Dana Van Nest

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful book with errors in the recipes.......2002-12-01

We purchased "Soffritto" as soon as we learned that Benedetta Vitali had published her own book. We also signed up for her one-week course at Zibbibo in Florence at the same time.

Before we left for Florence, we made the arista at home following her recipe in "Soffritto." We had terrible results; the meat was not cooked and gray, not at all like the beautiful photograph of a browned, crusty arista in the book. We decided to take the book with us to Florence and ask her about it. When we showed Benedetta the book, she told us that the recipe was wrong. Subsequently, we looked through other recipes, comparing the instructions in the book to the methods we used in her kitchen, and once again, she informed us that the instructions in the book or quantities were wrong. We now have a copy of "Soffritto" that has been marked-up by us with corrections.

I'm afraid that Ten Speed Press, otherwise a reputable publisher, has not been fair to Benedetta. The emphasis on the production of the book was on the fabulous photography and layout, and not on testing and copyediting the recipes.

I hope that Benedetta has better fortune in the future; she deserves it.

I blame it on my husband, Walter. ...

He made me buy another Italian cookbook. But, is it fair to call "Soffritto" just another Italian cookbook?

"Soffritto: Tradition & Innovation in Tuscan Cooking" ... authored by Tuscan restaurateur Benedetta Vitali, is like a respite in Tuscany between two beautifully illustrated covers. The artwork by Antonio Andreucci, in fact, initially attracted Walter, but the contemporary, yet authentic recipes and cooking suggestions won my admiration. Cary Wollinsky's color photographs of Tuscan vistas, Florentine street scenes, food artisans, and restaurant dishes complete the appetizing volume.

Vitali, a lifelong Florentine, is the co-founder and former partner at the famed trattoria Cibreo. Now, she cooks at her own country restaurant Zibibbo, emphasizing fresh produce from the area's small farms and gardens. Guess where I'm dining on my next trip to Florence?

By the way, soffritto translates as "under fried." A sautéed medley of aromatic vegetables, soffritto is the flavoring cornerstone of many Italian dishes.

You would have to be a pure Tuscan to really appreciate this book to the fullest. Some of the parts of the recipes could be confusing....or there are instances where you have to use ingredients that she does not define what they are or where to find them. I would not purchase this book unless you are really serious about spending time, money, and confusion for this product....

I recently purchased both Soffritto and A Tuscan Seduction. They couldn't be more different books. Soffritto is full of beautiful photographs and is well laid out; it's a very well produced book, and the recipes are fantastic! If you're going to buy one Tuscan cookbook I highly recommend this one.

Benedetta Vitali begins her book by asking, "Who gives a damn about cooking?" Her book will leave you no doubt about the fact that she not only adores cooking but considers it essential to the sensuous lifestyle of rural Tuscany. Benedetta teaches us how the love of eating good food can bring out the best cook in each of us.

For a book that has color in its title, it sure does not show it in its pages. There is only a meek use of color, and what use of color there is in the book, is in a limited range. The design style is outdated or poorly done traditional and country. I recommend you skip this book.

                                        Book Description

This lavish, oversized, full-color book features 150 years of paintings, photographs, tourist and advertising art, and maps that depict California's Great Central Valley. Through text and images, Picturing California's Other Landscape examines the portrayal of the Central Valley over the last 150 years: as promised land, exploitable resource, paradise lost, a source of unexpected life and beauty.

Picturing California's Other Landscape is filled with works by world-renowned artists including Albert Bierstadt, William Hahn, William Keith, Maynard Dixon, Frank LaPena, Wayne Thiebaud, Ansel Adams, Robert Dawson, Dorothea Lange, Carleton Watkins, and others--however, it is far more than a beautiful art book. Using the region as a backdrop, essays by Central Valley scholars explore more general questions about art: whether photography depicts "real" landscapes or invents them; who creates art and for what purpose; how does artistic enterprise--or lack of it--shape the way in which people see their own environment.

Picturing California's Other Landscape will supplement a groundbreaking show of these paintings and other graphics at the Haggin Museum in Stockton, California (OctoberDecember 1999).

I bought I Will Survive, the book, with sincere enthusiasm. I wanted to know everything about how this legend started the entire disco scene, afterall she was/is the very first disco queen. And whilst the book provides the reader with a good insight into Gloria's religious convictions and all the many challenges that success and plain old life has sent her way, the book doesn't seem to capture the excitement that the great lady caused around the world with her pioneering disco beat. Frankly, I was left feeling a little let down by the time I reached the end of the book. If anyone is best placed to write the definitive book about the 70's disco scene, it is Gloria Gaynor. I hope she will have another go, because whilst disco was condemned by many in its day (they were jealous), the music has since become highly respected and sought after over the years. I love you Gloria Gaynor, you are my idol, but please 'dish the dirt' on disco in your next book (now there's some encouragement)and tell us a lot more about what went on behind the scenes. I Will Survive, thanks to you. Love always, Vernal Scott, London, UK. 6.10.99

Having met Gloria and her husband, Linwood, the book pieced the entire puzzle together. A surprising love story that truly sustained thick and thin.

I have realized a new found respect for this couple. Not in their sucess and the legendary status of Gloria Gaynor, but in how very "normal" they are as people, just like us.
