Book Description

"Almost too hot. It had cracked 100 the day before, and the old weatherman on channel four, the guy who Joyce had said was the most accurate but heard was a pervert, had said today would be hotter by a few degrees."The summer heat in Tucson makes some people dry up and some people boil over. In the dusty, gated desert community of Rancho Sin Vacas (Ranch Without Cattle), a handful of residents are finding that neighborhood life is becoming increasingly bizarre among the crumbling swimming pools, overwatered lawns, and disaffected children.Sixteen-year-old Kendra obsessively hones her body into a perfectly muscled machine, even as she struggles to master a mounting violent streak. Thomas, her increasingly misanthropic brother, rarely leaves the house, all the while cultivating a disturbing little obsession of his own under the front porch. Down the street, Merv is stuck in a rut, thirty years old and still living at home. Lonely and looking for a way out, he's reaching his breaking point over his insomniac mother, whose oddly compulsive behavior with household appliances threatens to wreak havoc on his life. When a strung-out, magic marker sniffing teenager disappears from the neighborhood and rumors of murder surface, these malcontents find themselves in an unlikely alliance that will alter the course of one long, sun-baked summer#151;and perhaps their lives.Funny and disturbing, Modern Ranch Living probes the emptiness of modern American culture, the strange things people do to satisfy their twin hungers for pleasure and oblivion, and the unexpected small acts of kindness they can sometimes perform to ease one another's pain. This delicately deadpan comedy makes brilliantly clear why Mark Jude Poirier was named "the young American writer to watch" by the Times Literary Supplement.

5 out of 5 stars Plussing as which this book was great........2007-02-15

I couldn't put this book down. The characters are hilarious and well thought out. Kendra's grammar had me laughing out loud constantly. Every character has their own original quirkyness that tends to tie them all together perfectly. I after reading the description of this book, I didn't think I'd enjoy the book as much as I did. This was my first Poirier and certainly not my last.

4 out of 5 stars Which way is west . . ........2006-06-28

(Rated 3.5 stars rounded up to 4) Modern ranch living, as portrayed in this novel, takes place in an ageing gated community on the outskirts of Tucson, where the Code of the West has been replaced by a carping, adolescent irritability. Empty and desolate lives in the air conditioned, pool-in-the-backyard suburbs is not exactly a new theme to literature, and Poirier's effort to give them a postmodern twist labors manfully to rise above the conventions of the genre. Larry McMurtry's endorsement on the back cover notwithstanding, the dark humor of the book is not especially original or funny. The day-per-chapter structure slows down the narrative to a pace that often seems plodding, while the exchange of insults among characters who are quick to find fault with each other becomes repetitive and occasionally tiresome.

The central characters, a sixteen-year-old teenager obsessed with body image, health foods, and a punishing exercise regimen, and a thirty-year-old college drop out living at home with his emotionally unstable mother while managing a water park, remain sympathetic and exhibit an embattled kind of integrity in a world of "losers" and "jerks," and they are eventually rewarded for their uncompromised truth to themselves. The single plot strand that holds the narrative together (the disappearance of a boy from the neighborhood) yields not a very plausible resolution, and for the novel's leisurely pace, it raises questions that it never answers - like, what is the meaning of the purloined collection of athletic gear under the porch?

Recommended for readers whose youthful memories of the suburbs are similarly jaundiced. Just about everybody gets their licks from high school counselors to rude drivers, college creative writers, junkies of all kinds (fast food, meth, magic markers), high achievers who end up in corporate cubicles, and people who don't know which way is west.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly entertaining but..........2005-03-15

I wish the entire book was as captivating as the last chapter, which I thought was by far the best and most satisfying. I found myself, as one other reviewer here put it, feeling "close" to the two main characters. I laughed out loud several times reading this book, maybe the first time I've actually done that while reading. I felt strange because I used to see my father do that when he read and thought, how wierd. But now I understand.

This book reminded me somewhat of a Coen Brothers movie, the way it sort of weaves through a broad range of topics, none too bizarre for Poirier to delve head-first into, and it leaves you shocked and wide-eyed at parts.

The characters are highly-likeable, though I didn't find Kendra too likeable up until the last few chapters of the book; I guess when she "matures" somewhat. To me her character is, in some ways, a stark contrast to the other characters in the book: unrealistic. Perhaps if Poirier had made her a bit older than 16, it would be more plausable to hear about the way she seems to dominate her mother and brother, supposedly has a super-defined, fitness-america-muscle-woman body, and seems to be mentally more strong and capable than any young person in the real world. Not to mention the fact this girl supposedly used to have sex with a gangster kid behind a bagel shop in the bushes. She also has no problem killing a wounded bird by smashing it's head with her foot. I found these things to be VERY outside of the character I was picturing in my head...very different from the character that I thought I was getting to know as I read the book, and it really threw me off.

But after all, it is a novel, and a superbly well-written one at that. I'm going to pick up Goats next, and then Naked Pueblo. Modern Ranch Living is one of the best fiction books that I've read in awhile. All in all it is a gripping and entertaining portrayal of American life and I couldn't seem to put it down.

5 out of 5 stars A book that finally made me laugh.......2004-12-30

I have not laughed at anything written by a contemporary writer since George Saunders's story WINKY. Luckily, my sister gifted Modern Ranch Living to me, and I spent the last weekend with Mr. Poirier's book, laughing over and over. Even the most cynical taste out there will appreciate the humor here. Better than anything in McSweeney's, by the way.

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing .......2004-12-16

This books possesses a wonderful cumulative effect, the kind accomplished by a level of subtlety that perhaps might baffle the less erudite reader. Well worth every penny I spent at the airport.

2 out of 5 stars Tallie's Knightmare!!!.......2006-08-29

I am half way through this book and I alerady know that I hate it. They say that fiction is folks. If that is the case then this is the worst sort of fiction because these folks stink. I see a few people dislike Magnus and I can see why. He is written as a cardboard character with no depth or growth. But Tallie is my enemy. I hate her!!! She is a classic too stupid to live female!!! When you find yourself wishing all sorts of horrible things to befall the heroine of a story then you know it's a bad story.
Don't get me wrong, I sort of want to know how the story ends but only because when you put time and money into a book you want to at least read it. But the people in this story are just too annoying for words. I wanted Tallie to be put in her place, and of course the writer kept making her seem all right while the hero is all wrong. Of course she's perfect and he is always wrong.
I have a brain and I at least want my characters to have one too. So this story is more like a racy childrens book rather than a romance novel written for adults. I outgrew this sort of novel a while ago. I suppose romance newbies might find it interesting but once you've read actually good writing you wont.

4 out of 5 stars very good for a harlequin.......2005-03-11

most of the other reviews summed up the book pretty well. I just want to add that this book exceeded my expectactions on several accounts

First-for a relatively short (250 pages) Harlequin type book I felt the story much more involved.

Second-this was a surprising series regency, IMO, in the fact that there are a fair amount of involved "love" scenes here-ie-sex. All done tastefully, but sensually. I also thought the heroine's affection for her husband, including wanting to be near him by being intimate, refreshing and realistic.

I liked both characters and I would recommend this book for those who want a regency that's a bit out of the norm. 4 stars

3 out of 5 stars Too much of the same thing.......2004-09-15

I read the first half of this book fairly fast. I love her writing style, it's very witty and readable.

But 3/4 of the way through I found myself becoming irritated. First of all, NOTHING happened. That would be OK if there were dynamics between the H/H where I could see some progression. But Lord D'Arenville (I can't even recall his first name, though I just read this, because he never melted far enough to become on familiar terms with Tallie) was just a nasty, anger-riddled bastard.

I got fed up of him being "furious" all the time. I couldn't see him redeeming himself. Now, I can read about a tortured nasty bastard *if* by the halfway mark he's begun to melt and show some humanity. But this guy never did. I am sure if I stuck with it that he probably got a personality transplant miraculously and showed some (angry, strident) humanity toward her at the end. But as he was depicted, I really couldn't see why she made bizarre proclamations of love to him.

Yecch.

4 out of 5 stars Bravo!!!.......2002-02-07

Wow - finally a marriage of convenience regency/historical romance done right. I don't know why so many regency authors write the M of C plot with no sex! I applaud the author in recognizing that hello - nobles who marry are not necessarily looking for great love, just an heir which means....sex! Brides of the regency era, or any era, know that the marital relations is expected. The author handles it nicely. Tallie' is scared, not very informed about what to expect and her mean cousin, Letitia, gives her pointedly bad advice. I liked Tallie's discovery about sex, how to be a wife, joy of motherhood. I liked that Magnus, the Earl, appreciated her great qualities. I was not offended by the sex between the two as that is an honest part of a relationship. This by no stretch was a Susan Johnson erotic novel. I found, however, Tallie's daydreaming silly after a while. The first one - when she shook herself to stop daydreaming as for her there would be no knight - was okay, but it went on to long. Also, the Earl was so cold! His transition from cold noble to warm one was okay, but maybe he should not have been quite so cold to begin with. Also, he leaves Tallie pregnant at his home and with one a brief note to say good-bye and goes off for months. Gee - think she will be made, unsure, upset? To think she would not was a stretch. Sure, it was for her that he left to find Richard and that was nice, but at least say good-bye in person! I look forward to more from this author!

4 out of 5 stars Very strong book, although somewhat cloying.......2001-12-07

This is a book that provokes mixed reactions in me (unlike the tremendously powerful GALLANT WAIF which I endorse whole-heartedly). For one, I have mixed feelings about "sweet" stories. I cannot even read Elizabeth Mansfields one after another, since I need to take a break from all that sweetness.

First the good things. This book is a keeper for me for a couple of reasons. For one, we see a remarkable Grand Tour taken through Europe during the Peace of Amiens. The book is worth reading if only for the travel sections (and the descriptions of Tallie's reaction to the new French fashions and to the scenery). Secondly, while the story can be sentimental in parts, this is a powerful story about a man seeking children desperately (if not quite for the right reasons), and a young woman who has remarkable abilities to focus on what she believes she must do, despite her bitter recent past.

Other reviewers have commented in detail on the plot. I will confine my comments to what works and what doesn't. Magnus's unbelievably callous parents are mirrored by the parents of Tallie's pupil. The father is absent; the mother is mostly absent, and remarkably careless and vindictive when present.

Magnus, an earl, looks to his cousin Letitia (Tallie's employer and the callous mother described earlier) to find him a suitable bride. He believes that he desperately wants children, after years of confirmed bachelorhood. Letty's house party goes awry when Magnus decides that the most suitable candidate is not any of the aristocrats so carefully invited by his cousin, but - the governess. Tallie rejects Magnus's initial offer, and she is dismissed by her employer (who is smarting over Magnus's choice). Tallie then has no choice but to accept Magnus's renewed offer. She makes a couple of conditions, among which is a startling one - she must be taken on a Grand Tour for her honeymoon. Here begins the main part of the book, with the characters of the hero and heroine clearly set out for us. Magnus is cold, having had little familial warmth in his life. He is interested in children, not for the sake of continuing the title, but because he has suddenly found that he likes children. Tallie, who is wonderful with children, but is the penniless daughter of a late diplomat, has practically no wardrobe to speak off. Her dreams are very romantic (with a knight featuring prominently, hence the title), but rather naive. But her dreams are all she had, until her unexpected marriage.

I have to agree that this book is miscast as a "traditional Regency". Harlequin Regencies - in the current version - are *not* the same as Signet Regencies, nor the same as Zebra Regencies. Not all Signet Regencies are PG or even PG-13 (a few of Balogh's works are quite explicit). TALLIE'S KNIGHT would be rated R for explicit sex scenes, although there is nothing tasteless. (There is R, and then there is R). Actually, the bedroom scenes are rather important, given that Letty (the cousin) has been particularly malicious, leaving both hero and heroine frustrated upto the middle.

Tallie has been concealing a major secret from her new husband, well, actually two secrets. Both are revealed by the time they arrive in Italy. One is more delightful to the earl than the other. But the other is what makes the story slightly unbelievable for me. It is not so much that I doubt the facts that brought the secret into being, but the transformation of the Earl from a mere man (well, a mere peer) into a "very parfait knight" (to paraphrase Chaucer) is what is a bit unbelievable. The transformation is too quick, too pat.

For most of the story, I would award this book 5 stars, but I found Tallie's day-dreaming somewhat irritating (she could have had more imagination, at least!). I also found Magnus's transformation by the end too quick. Finally, there were elements about the dark secret held by Tallie that I found a little hard to believe. Those are what keeps this book from perfection. But as an early novel by Anne Gracie, this is certainly a great start.

Book Description

KHAN'S LAST STAND!

Jacqueline Bundy

The Trekker Newsletter

Lightning can indeed strike twice in the same place, as THE EUGENICS WARS: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume Two proves to be every bit as exciting, entertaining, and humorous as the first volume of this saga. The second portion of this engrossing story takes the reader from the beginnings of Khan's consolidation of his power, through the events that lead to his flight from Earth on the DY-100-class sleeper ship S.S. Botany Bay. From beginning to end, this novel is eminently satisfying....

Kilian Melloy

wigglefish.com

An ingenious blend of actual history and Trek mythology...Volume Two is an audacious, fast-moving conclusion to the Eugenics Wars duology, one-upping the considerable dramatic intensity and inventive accomplishment of the first volume, and bringing the story to a remarkably smooth, coherent conclusion....Cox's electric, fun-loving style of storytelling is the perfect medium to take the reader into the twenty-first century and beyond.

Michelle Erica Green

Trek Nation

Just as much fun as its predecessor, weaving Trek history in and out of recent headlines, mostly through the point of view of one of history's more entertaining secret agents, Teri Garr look-alike Roberta Lincoln....Cox's obvious affection for Trek comes through as strongly as his knowledge.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not what one thinks.......2007-06-06

Let me start by saying I am a fan of Star Trek. I've seen the moives and most of the shows (all series). I have not read any of the Star Trek books, before now at least.

"Wrath of Khan" is one of my all-time favorite movies and "Space Seed" is one of the better Star Trek TV episodes. So when I saw there were some books about the Eugenics Wars and Khan I was intrigued. And, after reading them, rather disappointed.

The books were written well enough. They are fast paced and easy to read. The back story with Kirk and the Enterprise are actually enjoyable and my favorite part of these books. Greg Cox shows time and time again, and again, and again, and again, he knows his Star Trek. And that is part of the problem.

It seems in every chapter there is some reference to something Star Trek but not directly related to Khan. And, in every other chapter, he seems to connect the current event in the book to some event in either one of the TV series or movies. It gets old, fast. It is like he has to keep reminding us he knows his Star Trek. Whenever I pondered Khan in the past, I never once thought of zombies, the Borg, or immortals. Here, I seem to encounter these odd ball things more then Khan.

This leads to another thing that bothers me - the focus of the book. It is not Khan, as one might expect. But it is really Ms Kennedy and Seven (and the cat) that the books focus on. Khan is there, of course, and the plot does deal with him and his schemes. But he is relegated to a single dimension character - a villain only worthy of one of the Brosnan James Bond films.

And that is what these books are like - bad spy novels with space death rays, micro spy gadgets, and teleporters. And it is more like the Eugenics COLD War. I understand that Space Seed had set the Eugenics Wars in the 1990s and that poses a problem. But I would rather have read an alternate history or somehow explained that the dating of the Eugenics was incorrect. Granted, Cox does a good job of mixing in real world events, but the story still ends up flat.

Going into this, I was hoping for story that could develop Khan's character instead of turning him into a shallow one. I had hoped Cox could do what Lucus couldn't do with Darth Vadar and that is come up with a compelling story for one of the archetypical villains of post modern sci-fi. But he didn't.

And though I dislike the books, there seems to be a good number of positive reviews of the books. I found them to be misleading. It is possible these reviewers did actually like the novels. And after reading the books, I think I can present a little test for other people to see if they would like the books. Here it is: If you liked the Star Trek episode with Seven and this *cat* and you think that style of episode fits well with Khan, you will like this book. If you used a laser etcher to remove the Seven episode from the DVD that contains it, you will not like this book.

5 out of 5 stars AN AWESOME BOOK!!!!.......2007-05-25

Sorry... but... I'm lying. This book is PATHETIC! REALLY! I know I put 5 stars, but this is to warn thoes who only look at the 5 star ratings. For anyone who wishes to read about the exciting exploits of Khan... look elsewhere.

Essentially, 1/2 of this book is devoted to Khan and the other half to almost completely unrelated plots surrounding two lame characters re-hashed from previous novels: Agent Gary Sevan and Roberta. Much like the previous book, most of the action revolves around these two cardboard-quality "super spys" with the actions of Khan serving as a kind of supporting "character" in a supporting story line. Much like the previous "novel" (and I do use that term loosely!), Kahn is just the "super villian" who Seven and Roberta are charged to depose.

More or less... this book reads like a cheapened (and unimaginative) James Bond book where Seven and Roberta are Bond-like and Khan is the super villian. Given that Seven and Roberta could not be added and rehashed in this novel if it were written (even closely) according to Trek-cannon, the novel was forced to take on a spy-vs.-spy approach. For thoes of you wishing to see Khan's great rise and fall (as suggested in the reviews, cover page, etc.), FORGET IT!!! This story is RARELY even told from the perspective of KHAN!!!... the supposed main character! Mostly, it is drivel!!!

please Please PLEASE DO **NOT** BUY THIS BOOK!!!

You will only be dispointed at the flimsly "plot", the cheesey and campy wording, the over-abundance of past Trekie refernces (no doubt to remind you that you are suppose to reading a "Trek" base "novel"), the over use of non-related "supporting" characters, and the near absence of the "main" character Khan. This book is almost pure rehash and pure rubbish!

4 out of 5 stars Cox is great, but the story doesn't live up to expectations!.......2006-05-31

First of all, Gregg Cox's creativity in building this story is excellent. In my opinion, he is one of the best writers in the Star Wars/ Star Trek genre. This is a great story, but Cox tries too hard to make the Eugenics Wars look like a "covert" war that happened concurrently with things that REALLY happened in our non-scifi history. This critically kills the whole scifi imagination of the reader - other than genetic engineering, there's no REAL sci-fi science happening. Gene Roddenberry and the original writers of Star Trek back in the 60's envisioned that by 1997 (the year of Khan's exile), we would be technologically advanced to the point of at least ALREADY traveling the solar system. Even though they missed the mark, the entire Star Trek genre is predicated on the idea that by 1997, we were well on our way to becoming a space-faring race. Cox's "historically correct" depiction of earth in the 1990s (Windows 95 and all) gravely injures what Roddenberry's Star Trek Timeline tried to create, thus rendering Khan's existence and reign unbelievable. Without high-technology, none of Cox's story is very belieavable. Think about it! How could Khan's mother create hundreds of genetically engineered babies in the 70's before PC's were invented, then by 1997 with more powerful PC's nobody else could re-create her technology (not even Khan himself according to Cox)?? Again, excellent writing, but Cox should have stuck to the advanced civilization concept that Roddenberry's bunch started out with. Though the read was worth the money, I'm dissappointed because I learned nothing about Star Trek history from this story.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting read..........2005-11-20

I liked this book, because it found a way to fit the Eugenics Wars into our timeline. It also provided several links to other instalations of Star Trek. The phaser Chekov left behind in Star Trek IV and the Ferengi shuttle at Roswell from the DS9 episode "Little Green Men" are all mentioned, as well as the protagonists being Gary Seven, Isis, and Roberta Lincoln from the original series episode, "Assignment: Earth". Plus, of course, references to "Space Seed" and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Reccomended to Star Trek fans.

2 out of 5 stars It's still not much of a war.......2005-04-11

I was expecting nation upon nation against Kahn in a horrible war. The book was nothing like that. I don't know if you can even call it a war. There really wasn't that big exciting story that it was made out to be. I was really looking foward to these books however they were disappointing.

      Book Description

For the first time in print, here are early lectures and private lessons from celebrated spiritual teacher Ernest Holmes, illustrating the key concepts behind his influential ideas.

Ernest Holmes was a beloved teacher and philosopher with a disarmingly simple message: Change your thinking, and you will change your life. There is a creative law in the universe, Holmes reasoned, and it is available to each of us right now through our thought patterns. We can quite literally think our way to happiness and contentment.

The author of the landmark work The Science of Mind and the founder of the worldwide Religious Science movement, Holmes was a uniquely gifted scholar with a vast command of the world's spiritual philosophies. To read him is to experience the deft workings of one of the shrewdest spiritual minds of the past century-yet to marvel at the simplicity of his message.

Love and Law is a collection of carefully selected lectures and private lessons that have never before been in print. It is an easy-to-read and concise volume, welcoming in both message and appearance.

1 out of 5 stars "Everything Old is New Again".......2007-05-12

With the movie "The Secret" and The Law of Attraction, being so popular at the moment, even though this book was written in the early 1900's, it is still quite pertinent. Very helpful in teaching ways to manifest good in one's life.

5 out of 5 stars Answers to Celestine Prophecy.......2006-02-28

Ernest Holmes was truly a man inspired by God. He succintly and methodically informs, teaches and demonstrates his teachings. The Mind of God is truly our mind. Awareness is everything. Ernest Holmes has turned religion into methodical science and law. Love is law. A must read for inquisitive minds seeking more of God and a clearer spiritual walk.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Ernest Holmes' beliefs and wisdom!.......2004-07-13

This book is of immense value! It is not a religious book, but rather a philosophy and psychology and more of a positive thinking New Thought book. It has become my favourite Ernest Holmes book in my collection. If you don't have time to read Science Of Mind, which is a very thick book, then read this first for a concise version where he talks about the principles of Science of Mind in an informal way. Some chapters are taken from his lectures, and I think he expresses his ideas very well in this book. It covers beliefs, attitudes and wisdom that you may have never read from his other more formal books like Science Of Mind, "This Thing Called You" or "Creative Mind and Success".

There is a questions and answers part in each chapter where he answers questions. This is the part which I like the most. He talks about things which he never revealed in other books, more personal issues and how he overcame his own beliefs of poverty etc. Then each chapter ends with him affirming - I learn from this part how he actually takes up an affirmation, how he neutralizes all doubts and fears and opposing thought, and how he makes the affirmation undeniable and undoubtable.

The first time I read this book, I followed his method of affirming for my health, and I kept repeating it, and in 10 minutes I can see and feel improvement! I was filled with joy and energy. Then I took up a thought for someone and affirming goodness and happiness into her life, and she calls immediately after that in a joyful voice from another country! Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The most Important Book for the New Millennium!.......2001-02-16

This book is filled with the unpublished teachings of Dr. Ernest Holmes, author of the Science of Mind and Founder of the Religious Science movement. As you read this book you feel a sense of sitting in the classroom with Dr. Holmes. His inspiration, enthusiasm and dedication to Truth is infectious! This is a brilliantly edited masterpiece. This book truly illustrates why the Science of Mind is the Philosophy for the New Millennium. No one has given us the Truth of Being as clearly and easily understood as Dr. Holmes since Jesus. Thank you and bless you, Marilyn Leo!!!

5 out of 5 stars Eat Well from Eating Well.......2002-02-17

This is one of the best cookbooks I've ever used. I never realized before that you could cook gourmet food that was low in calories and actually tasted good. I can't believe this book is out of print. I have cooked nearly everything in it and was anxious to give it to some of my friends. I keep hoping there is a chance that they will have a new printing.

      5 out of 5 stars Delicious Low-Fat Recipes.......2001-04-07

Eating Well Magazine was a one-of-a-kind: Full of delicious recipes and nutritional articles that were up-to-date and valuable. Now that the magazine is no longer in existence, the Eating Well cookbooks are essential volumes of the collected recipes. Having been a subscriber for seven years, I can honestly say that I have never cooked something from Eating Well that wasn't delicious and low-fat. The recipes vary in their ease (this is not a cooking made simple book) but not in their quality. This book presents dishes from all categories of cooking, from salads and soups to meat and poulty, pasta, sauces, desserts, etc. When I am looking for a new recipe, this book (and the New Eating Well book that is the companion volume) is the first off of the shelf and I often don't have to look further. I highly recommend it.

Not for the serious collector. Not bad for a real beginner. Explains some of the terms associated with watch movement styles.

Too many pages devoted to Swatch, I was hoping for more in depth of older models.

But is is cheap and would make a nice gift.

3 out of 5 stars Ok for the price.......1997-09-22

This small book on watches contains a little information on specific collectable watches, and some very general terms. The pictures are well done, and make the book worth the few dollars it cost. Section on Swatch is informative. Not essential

3 out of 5 stars Great idea book.......2005-11-11

This book was a purchase I dont regret, but it could be better. While it has wonderful ideas and great pictures, the project instructions it gives could be more detailed with pictures that illustrate every step. There are a few projects in there, that are mostly detailed with text, and if you cant picture what they are saying, then the project becomes very difficult to accomplish. Like I said, I dont regret my purchase of this book, but it could have been done better.

        Book Description

Jaroslav Andel's Avant-Garde Page Design 1900-1950 demonstrates the indebtedness of today's visual aesthetic to the experimental page design of the historical avant-garde. The book presents a richly illustrated survey of groundbreaking work created by avant-garde artists and page designers during the early part of the 20th century. It shows how page design emerged as highly sophisticated form of art in its own right, and directly or indirectly, prefigured the communication revolution we are undergoing today.

With images by more 250 individual artists, the book chronicles the history of modern page design and presents vivid examples drawn from the major movements of the era: Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, Constructivism, and Surrealism. Illustrations include designs by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, Alekandr Rodchenko, Lázló Moholy-Nagy, El Lissitzky, Jan Tschichold—as well as the lesser-known figures whose efforts shaped the printed page as we know it today.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview.......2004-03-16

I was a little skeptical when I purchased it, partly because I was unfamiliar with the author, but also because the price was so cheap. Something good can't be this cheap! However, doubts and concerns were immediately dispelled when I received it. Written in English, French and German means it is quite a heavy book, not one you want to casually take into the office to read on lunch break. It is a nice overview and explains historical events within the context of design and its influences. Because it is an overview, nothing goes into too much detail and sometimes skims the surface. However, what it misses in written content it more than makes up in wonderful colour illustrations and examples. For those interested in Avant Garde graphic design and art generally, this is a very recommended book on the subject. It drops lots of names into the pages, giving their contributions to the particular movements - futurism, constructivism, dada, photomechanical and cinematic contributions, etc. and can act as a springboard for further discovery into the area. Several exciting artist's work were shown which I was unfamiliar with and it has caused me to want to do further research. I understand a paperback issue is waiting release, but for the price difference a hardback is definitely the way to go. If you get bored browsing the pages, you can always combine it with a workout. The book is heavy!

It is really a good book. When I first read it, I couldn't put it down. You will really learn to love 'em more because you can experience their hardships before and during Boyzone through this book. You will learn that they are not a typical boyband who just likes fame and fortune, they are Boyzone because they choose to be Boyzone, having a good laugh and making their fans really happy at the expense of an opportunity to win a gold medal in the Olympics, finishing college with honors, free time to car race, and others. You will also learn to appreciate their effort of giving color to our lives. Did you know that Steve used to live in a not so friendly place? And Ronan, with that confidence in his charming personality, used to be bullied in his school and was called an "outsider". Shane and Keith had a near-death experince. And did you know that they were six before, excluding Mikey? All these and more in one of their best-selling books, Boyzone: the true story.

5 out of 5 stars The really true boyzone story.......1998-09-18

This book tells the true story of boyzone, from the early chilhood of the boys untill last year. It includes information about their families and their hobbies (did you know that Ronan Keating was a runner champion? and he's not the only one that could made it to the olimpics!!!). It also includes information about the two original Boyzone members that dropped out (If you want to know why read the book!)and the story of Boyzone from the right begining (you really would be surprised who thought about the idea...). Comperetly to other Boyzone Books it doesn't have many pictures, but it has pics with original members. The book makes you think about the changes in their lives and how far they have come. So, This is defently THE TRUE STORY!
