Book Description

Set in the 1960 in Paris' Jewish Quarter, Monsieur Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Koran is about a troubled Jewish boy, Moses, or Momo, who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a solitary Muslim shopkeeper named Monsieur Ibrahim. Momo's hilarious yet heart-wrenching story begins when loses his virginity in a bordello at the age of 11. Ibrahim offers Momo his ear and advice, and gradually the precocious boy that there is more to life than whores and stealing groceries. When Momo's father, a passive-aggressive lawyer who neglects his son who neglects his son's well being, disappears and is found dead, Ibrahim adopts the newly orphaned boy. Eventually the two decide to make a trip across Europe to the birthplace of Monsieur Ibrahim that brings them to the most important crossroads of their lives. As this deeply funny and exquisitely crafted plot unravels, it reveals how we learn the most essential aspects of life and death when we expect them the least. Oscar and the Lady in Pink gives us an entirely different tale of love and courage. Oscar is ten years old and dying of leukemia. He knows that his bone marrow transplant has failed, but the only person who will talk to him about dying is his beloved Mamie-Rose, an elderly volunteer who visits the sick children. When it becomes clear that Oscar's time is growing short, Mamie-Rose gives him an idea: he should pretend that every day he lives represents the passage of ten years, and at the end of each day he should write down his experiences as a letter to God so that he might feel less alone. With Mamie-Rose as his guide, Oscar begins an uplifting journey through days made fuller by the richness of his imagination and spirit. Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt has given us two illuminating tales about suffering, love, compassion, and faith both in God and humanity. These stories invite readers to laugh, cry, and stop to reflect on the grace and wonder that can be found in every heart.

5 out of 5 stars Two sweet stories.......2007-07-20

I can't imagine anyone not being moved by these short, thoughtful, enjoyable works. Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt is a superb storyteller.

5 out of 5 stars a highly recommended pair of stories.......2007-05-27

The dynamics of bestsellers is something I will never
really understand. I believe this pair of stories has
all the required qualities: they are an easy read, and
yet there is a lot more to them than meets the eye.
They both have an immediate impact, but also stay with
you for a while. I will definitely be looking for more
by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt.

5 out of 5 stars simple and touching.......2006-06-20

Oscar and the Lady in Pink is a story of a boy that is preparing to die. It is very well written - simple and beautiful. The story is sad but at the same time amusing, makes one to stop and think about the life.

5 out of 5 stars Two grace notes on laughter and loss.......2004-02-25

Yesterday - a day filled with joy and with disappointment - my last act before returning home was to stop in at a snug bookstore where I knew I would be welcomed and my soul would find comfort. I came to buy "The Secret Life of Bees," but when I went to purchase it, the owner (a muse of music and literature) offered me the book containing Schmidts two small novellas and said "just read them and call me when you've finished them - or just bring the book back." She will not be getting her book back. I spent the whole of last evening, sans TV, sans music, digesting the beautiful, simple stories. "Monsieur Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Koran" seemed at first a simple uninterrupted line, but gradually the small pathways took me on a journey that brought tears, shouts of laughter, and more than the occasional re-read of a sentence or paragraph. "Oscar and the Lady in Pink" again pulled me in with its simplicity. Too easy a tale, I thought. But while the tale was simple, the getting there was not. The use of a particular word, a gesture, an inward thought of the young dying narrator made this a journey of insight and deep understanding. I turned off the light, held the book to my chest, and let tears flow and thoughts roam for well over an hour. I literally didn't want to put the book down. It stayed next to me during the night. My day was touched by grace and generosity, from the bookseller and from the author. Read the book. Hold it close to you. And give a copy to someone you love.

3 out of 5 stars I expected better from an MJP novel.......2006-06-03

I know I'm in the minority here, but I didn't get what I expected from ANGEL ROGUE, and not in a good way. Up until recently MJP was an auto-buy author, but no more. Though I may read more of her books in the future, I'm going to borrow, not buy. There were no big glaring problems with this book, just a bunch of little complaints that added up to a big negative by the end of the book.

While MJP does create well-rounded characters, I didn't really feel like I connected with them by the end of the book. I knew what drove them, what their inner fears and desires were...and yet for some reason, I didn't really care. I felt like I was far removed from the story, as if I was only catching glimpses of their lives, rather than an inside look. This might have something to do with the fact that ANGEL ROGUE used to be a shorter Regency romance, entitled THE ROGUE AND THE RUNAWAY. Regardless of the author, revamped books usually do not work as well as books that were never in a short from to begin with. (An exception to this is of course MJP's very excellent THE RAKE, which used to be THE RAKE AND THE REFORMER.)

I just didn't feel the romance between the two characters, especially on Robin's part. I just couldn't really see why he should fall in love with Maxie. I kind of wondered if he only thought he was in love with her because they spent so much time together, not for compelling reasons. It felt like more of a rebound thing, since when the book started he was still pinning for his lost love Maggie from PETALS IN THE STORM. And since I'd felt in that book that Maggie should have chosen Robin instead of Rafe, it was hard to cheer for Robin to be with Maxie.

There was a secondary romance, involving Maxie's aunt, Desdemona, and Robin's older brother, Giles. It was not very well developed, either. It felt very tacked-on. While I never read the book in its original form, it left me to wonder if this secondary romance was one of the things that had been added to expand the book.

After the first half, the story really dragged, and I started skimming and skipping as much as I could. I finally gave up 50 pages from the end. Both romances were boring, and the mystery just wasn't compelling enough to keep me reading.

If you must complete the Fallen Angels series, borrow this book rather than buy it. It's not MJP's best effort. For something truly excellent by Putney, I recommend THE WILD CHILD, SILK AND SHADOWS, or THE RAKE. Those were all five-star books. Sadly, ANGEL ROGUE is not.

5 out of 5 stars Really, all the "Fallen Angels" books are excellent........2004-08-15

I don't know how I had not discovered this author sooner. I have been reading romance novels for about 3 years now and never before had I read a book by Mary Jo Putney. The first one I read "Dearly Beloved", was so beautiful that I went back for more, and after reading "One Perfect Rose" which is part of the Fallen Angels series, I was hooked. I knew I had to read the whole series, and so far none of the books I have read have dissapointed me.

In the case of this book, I have not yet read "Petals in the Storm", so I did not have any background knowledge about Lord Robert Andreville, but he is a fascinating character. His dazzling personality was so well portrayed that it leaps from the pages and you feel like you know him. I loved his sense of humor, his charm, his varied and amusing talents, the fact that under all that fancy facade there was a core of steel. Maxima was an exceptional heroine too, even though I can't really say that I feel a strong conection with her (I would never even dream of embarking on a trip of over 200 miles on foot, on a strange land and with almost no money) But that is what makes her extraordinary besides, she is also very kind, courageous and intelligent and those are qualities I admire.

The only thing that I found that was a little unbelievable and incomprehensible is the fact that Robin would embark on this trip with her with no money, and no provisions whatsoever. That he felt the need to accompany her, I can understand, but why didn't he make a small detour to the house first to fetch money, and two horses or a carriage to make the trip more confortable? I know he is an adventurer and an excentric, but my practical and comfort-liking mind just rebelled at the thought that someone would deliberately choose the hard path when there was an easier and more efficient way to accomplish things. I guess I'm not very adventuresome.

I connected more with Robert's brother Giles (which doesn't mean that I liked him better than Robin, just that I find his personality easier to relate to) He and Maxima's aunt Desdemona are great secondary characters. I wish they had gotten their own novel instead of just being a sub plot of this one. But their story definitely enriched this book.

All in all, I think this book is excellent. I would recommend this and all the books in this series to anyone who likes a well written story, with strong lovable characters and a mix of passion and adventure to make it all more interesting.

5 out of 5 stars The Indian and the Spy.......2003-03-26

This is a great story, Maxie and Robert are two of the best characters Ms. Putney has ever created! A story of east meets west and the differences that make each other fall in love with the other. This is also a very humorous story, a chase a crossed the length of England and two lovers who don't want to be found. This story has all the makings of a good merry romp! Curl up in you favorite blanket, and let Ms. Putney sweep you away!! Definately worth the reading time!

4 out of 5 stars Must add to your collection.......2002-08-06

The third in the Fallen Angel Series, we finally see Robin enjoy happiness. Robin was such a sweetheart to Margot in Petals on the Wind, you really did feel bad that Rafe ended up with her. However, while Maxima is strong like Margot, she has the determination needed to help Robin deal with his demons over what he has done in the name of loyalty for his country. Together as the two of them travel by foot to London while avoiding hitmen and their own families, they become more passionate and the healing of both their wounded hearts enhanced by their growing love for one another. This book again is not as good as the first in the series, but has an emotional quality that the others don't have in that we see many character reuniting and healing over past hurts than we saw in others. This books is the turning point in which Lucien (one of the actual Fallen Angels) begin to understand the torture his soul has endured by his part in the spy ring. Robin while not part of the Fallen Angels (Nick, Rafe, Lucien and Michael), is a worthy character and one that I liked immensely. It's really his character that pulls this book into the level of romance reading that I enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars mjp at her best.......2002-06-20

I have never read a MJP book that wasn't simply wonderful. Even her contemporaries (which I don't really care for) deserve five stars. Angel Rogue is no exception, it is an unusual, beautiful love story that will leave you sighing long after you turned the last page.

Lord Robert Andreville (Robin) has returned to England after a dozen years of spying for the British crown in the fight agaisnt Napoleon. He is weary in mind and spirit and tortured by memories of the past when he meets Maxima Collins. Maxie is an American with an unique heritage: she's half Mohawk and half English and she has come to England with her father who died shortly afterward. Maxie feels all alone in the world, she feels like an alien among her aristocratic English family. She also has reason to suspect foul play in her father's sudden death. So she decides to leave the country manor where she was staying with her uncle and travel to London masquerading as a boy to learn what she can about her father's last hours. She meets Robin on the way by literally falling over him. He is immediately taken by her exotic looks and unconventional ways. He decides to appoint himself her guardian and together they embark on a perilous journey during which Maxie teaches Robin to trust and let go of the past while falling irrevocably in love with him.

Maxie is a delightful heroine, she is strong, intelligent and independent. No chin lifting, blushing, simpering heroines for MJP. She creates characters that are real, with credible issues and feelings that the reader can relate to. Robin is adorable and
even though he's extremely drool-worthy I found it interesting that he's of average height. I had never before read about a hero in a romance novel that was less than a six footer so this was a refreshing change and made him seem more real to me.

In short, this a great book and certainly another winner in MJP's long list of excellent romances. :)

                            5 out of 5 stars Perfect gift!.......2007-01-18

I bought this book for my neighbor and when it came I wanted to keep it! She had recently visited Williamsburg and came back with stories of how she loved the Christmas decorating and wanted to emulate things for her own home.
I've never been to Williamsburg myself, but this book was beautiful! The pictures were professional (I've seen books where they were not) and there were instructions on how to make the decor yourself. Well worth it! I will probaly get one for myself for next season!

                            5 out of 5 stars I love boxwood.......2006-10-14

Since I love boxwood growing in the yard and using the beautiful greens at Christmas, I found this book to be one of the most informative books I own about Christmas greens. The instructions on how to create many decorations for the inside and outside the home are very clear. The pictures are gorgeous. I have learned to make garlands, wreaths, centerpieces, swags, boxwood trees, and other lovely items. The book features many different types of greens to use for creating holiday decorations. I have taught many others how to make holiday decorations that are featured in this book.

This book has lovely ideas for decoarting using natural materials. I found many of the ideas could be done very inexpensively.

This is an essential tool for anyone interested in historic European (incl. England) interiors. From a discussion of spatial relationships, to room arrangement, to the minutiae of room decor - ceiling to floor- Thornton describes interiors from 1620 to 1900 with fluidity and wit. The book reads like a good novel, but the information is rock-solid.

Authentic Decor: The Domestic Interior 1620-1920, is far more than a history of the evolution of the domestic interior. Written by Peter Thorton, of the Victoria and Albert Museum, it shows first and foremost that an interior is a reflection of its owner. Everyone is well represented in its 408 richly illustrated pages, from the poor, to the middle classes, to the rich & the grand. Much valuable insight is to be gained from reading this book. I have kept it on my coffee table for years and have guarded it with my life, because people are so engrossed by it. I hope that somebody will use all of their powers of persuasion to convince Viking Penguin, Inc. to re- issue this stunning & informative book!

I think it is possible that some people do not like the truth about their favourite stars hence the comments so far.
Personally, I think the book is to the point and S.Morley does not mince his words and in my estimation: that is being honest.
This book is extremely good (for those who are quite willing to accept human fraility in the star).

One can only imagine the author Sheridan Morley obtained his employment at The SPectator and on the BBC due to who his father was and NOT because of any talent or insight he has about actors and acting. This is clearly revealed in the petty, pointless attack on Ginger Rogers in his sorry excuse for a review of her career.

1 out of 5 stars Shall We "Crap On Miss Rogers".......2005-09-24

I should have listened to all the negative feedback in this forum on this item. Mr. Morley hasn't got a kind, or even fair, thing to say about his subject if he can't substitute something rotten for it. The entire "biography" is marred by mean-spiritedness (and isn't even entertaining on that dubious level). I say give it a wide berth.

1 out of 5 stars A really unfair and nasty book.......2005-02-27

I bought this book shortly after Miss Rogers passed away.
I had enjoyed watching her films with my Grandmother, who adored Ginger! I simply wanted to learn more about the ladies life, work and add shine to my memories of "Nan".
While I was not looking for cheesy and sickly sentimental representations of Miss Roger's life, I did not expect to find the book to be so scathing, critical and frankly, bitchy.
It was nasty to the point of horribly dismissive and cruel. The photography is lovely, it could not fail to be, she was a beautiful woman. The written word here is just mean and spiteful and it assumes all her achievements to be accidental folly or ruthlessly aquired.
Morley has such an axe to grind, but why he does is best known to himself since he never discloses the source of his disdain. I hope no author is as cruel to the memory of his Father, the British actor Robert Morley, as he is to Miss Rogers. The only postive thing about this book is that you won't want to buy a Morley book again, and he has produced many on other stars.
Biographers can be hard to take at best, making a living by picking over the lives of others so disrespectfully, when they do so nastily it just smacks of the worse kind of envious resentment and inadequacy. As a boigrapher, Morley is as awful as Andrew Morton, the awful man who picked over Princess Diana's life both before and after her death. These people are like verbose vultures.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst biographies I have ever read.......2003-09-10

I could not believe how bad this was. I have been a fan of Ginger's for a long time & saw her recieve her award at the Night of 100 Stars in London just a few months befroe she died. I was shocked at how mean & unpleasant this book was. It skirted through much of her career & life, & was a incredibly dismissive of all that she had done-ironic considering she was a highly skilled actor, dancer, artist, comedienne & athlete with a warm & affecting singing ability & a feisty & fun personality & real professionalism. Whilst i do not need hagiography, this biography seemed to simply want to demlosh her completely. The photos were a treat though, but i reccomned reading her own autobiography or Homer Dickens' Films of...If you are already a fan, you will be angered & disappointed by this book, & if not you will not get any true idea of her talents from it. Ultimately, a totally pointless exercise in vitriol.
